¤¤¤ 00:00:00.46\00:00:03.00 male announcer: It is the best-selling book in history. 00:00:03.03\00:00:05.57 No volume ever written has been more loved and quoted, 00:00:05.60\00:00:09.67 and its words, sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious, 00:00:09.70\00:00:13.51 should always be studied carefully. 00:00:13.54\00:00:16.38 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.41\00:00:19.75 Welcome 00:00:38.83\00:00:44.07 Now here's your host from Amazing Facts International, 00:00:44.11\00:00:47.74 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:47.78\00:00:49.41 Doug Batchelor: Hello, friends. 00:00:50.21\00:00:51.71 Would you like to hear an amazing fact? 00:00:51.75\00:00:54.42 One of the greatest proofs for the supernatural nature of the 00:00:54.45\00:00:57.25 Bible is the Jewish people and the nation of Israel. 00:00:57.29\00:01:01.36 Consider, no other people in history have been driven from 00:01:01.39\00:01:04.63 their native land three times over a period of 2,600 years, 00:01:04.66\00:01:09.13 maintained their unique language, religion, 00:01:09.16\00:01:12.03 and identity, and then repossessed their homeland. 00:01:12.07\00:01:15.84 In 1660 BC, Jacob and his tribe were driven from Canaan to Egypt 00:01:15.87\00:01:20.54 by a famine. 00:01:20.58\00:01:22.11 Then, 250 years later, Joshua led them back 00:01:22.14\00:01:25.38 into their inheritance. 00:01:25.41\00:01:27.42 Afterward, in 586 BC, the Jews were conquered 00:01:27.45\00:01:30.75 by the Babylonians. 00:01:30.79\00:01:32.29 The city of Jerusalem, the temple, were burnt, and then 00:01:32.32\00:01:34.79 they were carried off to Babylon for 70 years. 00:01:34.82\00:01:38.13 But then, under the Persian Empire, they returned to Israel 00:01:38.16\00:01:41.70 and rebuilt the temple in the city. 00:01:41.73\00:01:44.13 In 30 AD, Jesus foretold that the temple would again be 00:01:44.17\00:01:47.84 destroyed and Jerusalem burned in 40 years, and it happened 00:01:47.87\00:01:51.57 right on schedule. 00:01:51.61\00:01:52.97 In 70 AD, the Romans burned and destroyed the city 00:01:53.01\00:01:55.98 and the temple. 00:01:56.01\00:01:57.31 For the next 1,900 years, the Jewish people were scattered 00:01:57.35\00:02:00.65 around Europe and the world until 1948, when Israel became 00:02:00.68\00:02:05.09 an independent state in its native land. 00:02:05.12\00:02:08.39 This is just an amazing example of how God has had His hand over 00:02:08.42\00:02:12.16 this unique people through history. 00:02:12.19\00:02:14.66 And you might be surprised to learn, Pastor Ross, even though 00:02:14.73\00:02:17.57 Israel has their own country, 30% of the Jews in the world, 00:02:17.60\00:02:21.20 16 million Jews, are in Israel, but over 51% are in the United 00:02:21.24\00:02:26.37 States of America. 00:02:26.41\00:02:28.14 Jëan Ross: That's right, Pastor Doug. 00:02:28.18\00:02:29.64 We were talking before we went on the air, and you 00:02:29.68\00:02:31.31 mentioned that there's really two strongholds where Jews find 00:02:31.35\00:02:33.88 themselves today--of course, Israel and the United 00:02:33.92\00:02:36.05 States--and the United States has more Jews, and then just 00:02:36.08\00:02:39.12 sort of a smattering here and there in other countries, Europe 00:02:39.15\00:02:42.16 and some other places, but it really seems that the Jewish 00:02:42.19\00:02:45.43 people being dispersed through these different nations for 00:02:45.46\00:02:48.90 almost, whatever, almost 2,000 years, less than that, 1,900 00:02:48.93\00:02:53.00 years, and yet being able to come back to their same land, 00:02:53.03\00:02:56.54 having the same capital city after such a long period of time 00:02:56.57\00:02:59.74 is rather remarkable. 00:02:59.77\00:03:01.51 Doug: It's amazing they survived because not just during 00:03:01.54\00:03:04.28 the Nazi regime, but through history, there have been a lot 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.88 of efforts to just annihilate them, and yet they've remained a 00:03:06.92\00:03:11.32 distinct people, and probably the central reason for that was 00:03:11.35\00:03:15.29 the Scriptures. 00:03:15.32\00:03:17.39 The Scriptures are one reason they continue to thrive, because 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.93 they would always teach the young people to read, so they 00:03:19.96\00:03:23.20 did well in education, and high offices, and finances, as well, 00:03:23.23\00:03:28.57 and it helped to maintain their identity, because their whole 00:03:28.60\00:03:31.47 culture was based on the Scriptures. 00:03:31.51\00:03:33.78 And so, and even for us as Christians, we are in 00:03:33.81\00:03:36.81 a sense spiritual Israel. 00:03:36.85\00:03:38.95 It's what gives us our freedom and our identity where we are. 00:03:38.98\00:03:43.55 Christianity has thrived and become a world religion, 00:03:43.59\00:03:46.55 and it's again because of the Scriptures. 00:03:46.59\00:03:48.49 And we have a book that talks about this and some of these 00:03:48.52\00:03:51.09 other amazing facts that we'll offer any 00:03:51.13\00:03:53.90 of our viewers tonight. 00:03:53.93\00:03:55.30 And, oh, you know, I should probably read something. 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.50 I think we had a Scripture all queued up, and I wanted to make 00:03:57.53\00:04:00.24 sure and share this with people. 00:04:00.27\00:04:01.87 I mentioned a prophecy of Jesus where he talked about predicting 00:04:01.90\00:04:06.41 the fall of Jerusalem. 00:04:06.44\00:04:08.08 If you look in the book of Luke chapter 21, verse 20, Jesus 00:04:08.11\00:04:11.98 said, "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, 00:04:12.01\00:04:16.08 then know that its desolation is near. 00:04:16.12\00:04:19.05 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those 00:04:19.09\00:04:22.19 who are in the midst of her depart, and let those who are in 00:04:22.22\00:04:24.99 the country enter her. 00:04:25.03\00:04:27.50 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things that 00:04:27.56\00:04:30.27 are written may be fulfilled, and woe to those that are 00:04:30.30\00:04:33.30 pregnant and those that are nursing babies in those days! 00:04:33.34\00:04:36.20 For there will be great distress in the land and wrath 00:04:36.24\00:04:38.51 upon the people. 00:04:38.54\00:04:40.14 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away 00:04:40.18\00:04:42.98 captive into all nations. 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.55 And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the 00:04:45.58\00:04:49.12 times of the Gentiles are fulfilled." 00:04:49.15\00:04:52.12 And all of this vividly came to pass that Christ had foretold. 00:04:52.15\00:04:56.52 And then God again brought them back to their land. 00:04:56.56\00:05:00.13 So it's just an amazing, I think, evidence of the 00:05:00.16\00:05:03.40 dependability of prophecy. 00:05:03.43\00:05:05.70 And if you wonder about the truth of the Bible, just look at 00:05:05.73\00:05:07.97 the history of the Jewish nation. 00:05:08.00\00:05:10.24 It's only supernatural that they've survived. 00:05:10.27\00:05:13.71 Any other country, when it's been conquered, dispersed, 00:05:13.74\00:05:16.81 they're absorbed, they lose their identity, they intermarry, 00:05:16.85\00:05:19.45 and they disappear. 00:05:19.48\00:05:21.25 But the Jews have just continued to persevere through history. 00:05:21.28\00:05:25.45 It's incredible. 00:05:25.49\00:05:26.89 And we have a book. 00:05:26.92\00:05:28.22 Jëan: We do. 00:05:28.26\00:05:29.56 The book is called "Spiritual Israel." 00:05:29.59\00:05:30.99 What does the Bible say about Israel, both literal Israel? 00:05:31.03\00:05:33.53 Of course, the Bible has a lot to say about that, but what 00:05:33.56\00:05:35.23 about spiritual Israel that you read about in the New Testament? 00:05:35.26\00:05:38.07 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:05:38.10\00:05:40.10 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:05:40.14\00:05:43.57 That is our resource phone line. 00:05:43.61\00:05:45.61 You can also dial #250 on your smartphone, say "Bible Answers 00:05:45.64\00:05:49.38 Live," and then ask for the book by name. 00:05:49.41\00:05:51.65 It's called "Spiritual Israel." 00:05:51.68\00:05:53.35 We'll be happy to send it to anyone here in the U.S. 00:05:53.38\00:05:55.78 and in Canada. 00:05:55.82\00:05:57.22 If you're outside of North America, you can just go to our 00:05:57.25\00:05:59.12 website, just AmazingFacts.org, and you'll be able to read the 00:05:59.15\00:06:02.72 book there. 00:06:02.76\00:06:04.06 Again, it's called "Spiritual Israel." 00:06:04.09\00:06:05.39 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:06:05.43\00:06:08.56 That is the resource phone line. 00:06:08.60\00:06:10.50 And one more number we'll give you. 00:06:10.53\00:06:12.23 This is the phone line to our studio. 00:06:12.27\00:06:14.77 It's 800-463-7297. 00:06:14.80\00:06:18.17 If you have a Bible question, you can call and ask. 00:06:18.21\00:06:20.34 Again, it's 800-463-7297. 00:06:20.38\00:06:24.68 All right, I think we're ready to go to the phones. 00:06:24.71\00:06:26.61 But, Pastor Doug, before we go, let's start with prayer. 00:06:26.65\00:06:29.65 Dear Father, once again, we are grateful for the opportunity to 00:06:29.68\00:06:31.79 be able to open up your Word and study. 00:06:31.82\00:06:34.06 And, Lord, as we always do, we want to invite the Holy Spirit 00:06:34.09\00:06:36.12 to be with us, to guide us here in the studio, and be with those 00:06:36.16\00:06:38.93 who are listening, wherever they might be, and lead us to a 00:06:38.96\00:06:41.53 clearer understanding of what the Bible says and teaches. 00:06:41.56\00:06:44.17 In Jesus' name, amen. 00:06:44.20\00:06:46.57 Doug: Amen. 00:06:46.60\00:06:47.87 Jëan: First caller this evening is Gary, listening in Illinois. 00:06:47.90\00:06:50.44 Gary, welcome to the program. 00:06:50.47\00:06:53.14 Gary: Thank you. 00:06:53.17\00:06:54.48 It seems that Malachi 4 is a good chapter for these times. 00:06:54.51\00:06:58.85 It starts out with, "For behold, the day is coming. 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.75 It shall burn like an oven." 00:07:01.78\00:07:03.75 They're talking about planet Earth. 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.65 But my question specifically is verse 5: "Behold, I will send 00:07:05.69\00:07:11.63 you Elijah the prophet before the great and dreadful day 00:07:11.66\00:07:15.40 of the Lord." 00:07:15.43\00:07:16.83 So is the Elijah that they're talking about in Malachi the 00:07:16.87\00:07:19.40 same one who had the problem with the priests of Baal? 00:07:19.43\00:07:23.34 And how is he coming? 00:07:23.37\00:07:25.24 Is he coming like reincarnating, or how is he going to come, 00:07:25.27\00:07:30.55 and how are we going to know him? 00:07:30.58\00:07:32.68 Doug: Yeah, great question. 00:07:32.71\00:07:34.32 First of all, it's not a reincarnation. 00:07:34.35\00:07:37.19 If you read the story of Elijah before he went to heaven, 00:07:37.22\00:07:39.59 God brought him to heaven in a fiery chariot. 00:07:39.62\00:07:43.16 He had an apprentice named Elisha. 00:07:43.19\00:07:45.99 And the Bible says that Elisha prayed that the spirit of Elijah 00:07:46.03\00:07:49.93 in a double portion would fall on him, 00:07:49.96\00:07:52.23 meaning the Holy Spirit, the spirit of revival. 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.64 God doesn't, you know, transfer souls from one body to the next. 00:07:54.67\00:07:58.01 And when Elijah went to heaven, it says, "The spirit of Elijah 00:07:58.04\00:08:01.28 fell on Elisha." 00:08:01.31\00:08:03.04 Then you go to the New Testament, and you look in the 00:08:03.08\00:08:05.38 Gospel of Luke chapter 1: "When the angel appeared to the father 00:08:05.41\00:08:09.58 of John the Baptist," to let them know they're going to have 00:08:09.62\00:08:12.22 a baby, he said that the baby would go before the Messiah in 00:08:12.25\00:08:16.12 the spirit and power of Elijah. 00:08:16.16\00:08:19.73 So when it talks about I'll send you Elijah and an individual 00:08:19.76\00:08:22.60 would come that would have the same spiritual power of Elijah, 00:08:22.63\00:08:29.27 and that was in first part John the Baptist. 00:08:29.30\00:08:32.67 I think it's in Matthew 11. 00:08:32.71\00:08:34.21 Jesus said, "If you can receive it, John the Baptist is Elijah 00:08:34.24\00:08:37.58 that was to come." 00:08:37.61\00:08:38.91 But Jesus also said Elijah has come, and he will come, because 00:08:38.95\00:08:43.08 the prophecy in Malachi said, "I'll send you Elijah the 00:08:43.12\00:08:46.12 prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord." 00:08:46.15\00:08:49.56 So before the second coming, there is going to be either an 00:08:49.59\00:08:54.13 individual or a message again that will go in the spirit and 00:08:54.20\00:08:57.77 the power of Elijah and like John the Baptist. 00:08:57.80\00:09:01.64 So, hope that made sense. 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.74 You know, I think I have an article--if you look at the 00:09:04.77\00:09:08.81 Amazing Facts website, it talks about the spirit of Elijah. 00:09:08.84\00:09:13.98 And if you search Doug Batchelor and the spirit of Elijah, you'll 00:09:14.02\00:09:16.92 probably find that just looking through Google. 00:09:16.95\00:09:20.39 Thanks so much, Gary, appreciate your call. 00:09:20.42\00:09:22.62 Jëan: The next caller that we have is Stephen 00:09:22.66\00:09:23.96 listening in Florida. 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.29 Stephen, welcome to Bible Answers Live. 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.23 Stephen: Hello, how are you doing? 00:09:27.30\00:09:28.66 Doug: Doing great, thank you for calling. 00:09:28.70\00:09:32.00 Stephen: Yes I'm doing great, as well. 00:09:32.03\00:09:33.57 I have Christ above all powers. 00:09:33.60\00:09:35.10 Doug: Amen. 00:09:35.14\00:09:36.54 And your question tonight. 00:09:36.57\00:09:38.44 Stephen: Yes, my question today is what did they wash 00:09:38.47\00:09:41.11 their robes with in the book of Revelation, 00:09:41.14\00:09:43.41 and what is that all about? 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.01 Doug: Yeah, it talks about, "and they've washed their robes 00:09:45.05\00:09:47.22 and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." 00:09:47.25\00:09:50.45 Now, you and I would typically not use blood 00:09:50.49\00:09:52.02 to wash white clothes. 00:09:52.05\00:09:54.69 This is a symbol. 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.89 It's through the blood of Christ that we are washed from sin. 00:09:56.93\00:10:01.06 And Pastor Ross might have a comment on that. 00:10:01.10\00:10:03.40 Jëan: Yeah, Revelation chapter 7, verse 14. 00:10:03.43\00:10:05.90 It's really a description of God's people in the last days 00:10:05.93\00:10:07.94 here, and it talks about those who washed their robes, made 00:10:07.97\00:10:10.67 them white in the blood of the Lamb, meaning those who have 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.54 received and accepted Christ's sacrifice. 00:10:13.58\00:10:16.14 And, Pastor Doug, you know it's important to remember that 00:10:16.18\00:10:18.25 there's two parts to the sacrifice of Christ. 00:10:18.28\00:10:20.42 It's not only forgiveness, which is very important, but there is 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.99 also the power of Christ working in us through the Spirit 00:10:24.02\00:10:27.32 to bring deliverance, to give us victory over sin. 00:10:27.36\00:10:29.96 So, you have justification, sanctification. 00:10:29.99\00:10:32.69 So, when it talks about robes in the Bible, it's talking about 00:10:32.73\00:10:34.86 character, those who by faith have received Christ's 00:10:34.93\00:10:37.67 forgiveness and received Christ's righteousness, 00:10:37.70\00:10:40.47 His Spirit working within them. 00:10:40.50\00:10:42.34 They've washed their robes, made them white in 00:10:42.37\00:10:44.44 the blood of the Lamb. 00:10:44.47\00:10:45.77 Doug: Yeah, very good. 00:10:45.81\00:10:47.11 I hope that helps a little bit. 00:10:47.14\00:10:48.54 And, you know, we have a gift book that talks about the riches 00:10:48.58\00:10:53.28 of His grace, that talks about how everyone can experience 00:10:53.31\00:10:56.92 that cleansing from the blood of Christ. 00:10:56.95\00:10:59.85 Jëan: To receive the book, just call 800-835-6747. 00:10:59.89\00:11:03.43 That is our resource phone line. 00:11:03.46\00:11:04.99 You can ask for the book. 00:11:05.03\00:11:06.39 It's called "The Riches of His Grace." 00:11:06.43\00:11:07.86 There's another way you can get it. 00:11:07.86\00:11:09.16 You can get a digital copy right away. 00:11:09.20\00:11:11.17 Dial #250 on your smartphone, say "Bible Answers Live." 00:11:11.20\00:11:15.64 And then you can also ask for the book. 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.34 It's called "The Riches of His Grace." 00:11:17.37\00:11:18.94 And you can go to the Amazing Facts website, if you're outside 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.74 of North America, and you can read it there. 00:11:21.78\00:11:24.55 Doug: You know, I was looking for a verse, 00:11:24.58\00:11:25.95 also, while you were sharing. 00:11:25.98\00:11:27.42 And it's in Romans 5:9, where Paul says, "Much more then, 00:11:27.45\00:11:30.35 having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved 00:11:30.39\00:11:34.16 from wrath through Him." 00:11:34.19\00:11:36.19 So that was one of the many verses I think 00:11:36.22\00:11:38.36 that talks about that. 00:11:38.39\00:11:39.86 Thanks so much, Stephen. We appreciate it. 00:11:39.89\00:11:42.10 Jëan: We've got Jerry listening in Texas. 00:11:42.13\00:11:43.43 Jerry, welcome to the program. 00:11:43.47\00:11:46.13 Jerry: Hey guys, thank you. 00:11:46.17\00:11:47.87 I was reading my Bible this morning and listening, 00:11:47.90\00:11:50.84 where that Jesus had met the blind man, and He healed. 00:11:50.87\00:11:56.81 And Christ came later on to reassure him and show him 00:11:56.85\00:12:01.42 that it was Christ. 00:12:01.45\00:12:03.12 But in finishing the chapter, how many outer sanctuaries were 00:12:03.15\00:12:08.32 there to the God's temple, referred to as Solomon's Temple? 00:12:08.36\00:12:14.50 Because when the people came from the east, some of Jesus' 00:12:14.56\00:12:18.50 disciples had to go into the outer place where Jesus was, 00:12:18.53\00:12:25.47 and then Jesus went to meet the kings--wait, I guess refer 00:12:25.51\00:12:29.24 to them as kings of the east, but to meet the men 00:12:29.28\00:12:33.18 from the east that came to praise Him. 00:12:33.21\00:12:37.39 Doug: Yes, and you're not going to find this probably in 00:12:37.42\00:12:40.32 the Old Testament, I don't think so; but by the time of Christ, 00:12:40.36\00:12:43.86 they had always had what they called the courtyard of the 00:12:43.89\00:12:46.86 women, because the men and women would worship separately. 00:12:46.90\00:12:51.47 They had a courtyard that only the priests could go into, when 00:12:51.50\00:12:55.04 they were offering sacrifice, but there was an outer court 00:12:55.07\00:12:57.21 where the people could gather, by the time of Christ, 00:12:57.24\00:12:59.84 because they were occupied by the Romans. 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.58 They had developed what they called the court 00:13:01.61\00:13:03.38 of the Gentiles. 00:13:03.41\00:13:04.95 There was a place where Gentiles could come; and so when Jesus 00:13:04.98\00:13:06.92 went out to speak with the Greeks, that I think it was 00:13:06.95\00:13:10.29 Philip or Andrew said, "that we're looking for him, that He 00:13:10.32\00:13:14.12 went out probably to that court of the Gentiles." 00:13:14.16\00:13:17.13 Is that your understanding? 00:13:17.16\00:13:18.56 Jëan: Yes, absolutely. 00:13:18.59\00:13:20.10 You know, it's interesting, Pastor, you mentioned that 00:13:20.13\00:13:21.56 archaeological finds have actually discovered some stone 00:13:21.60\00:13:23.83 that was inscribed by the lettering, which sort of was the 00:13:23.87\00:13:28.20 marker between the court of the Gentiles and the court of the 00:13:28.24\00:13:30.74 Jews; and if you pass that stone that had a very clear 00:13:30.77\00:13:34.58 description of those on pains of death, if you passed that and 00:13:34.61\00:13:37.68 you were a Gentile into the court of the Jews, you were 00:13:37.71\00:13:39.81 taking your life in your hands. 00:13:39.85\00:13:41.72 So, at least the Greeks, they came right up to that particular 00:13:41.75\00:13:45.02 spot, they could go no further, and so they sent a message into 00:13:45.05\00:13:47.49 Jesus, who was inside, and He came out to meet them. 00:13:47.52\00:13:51.16 Doug: Yes, remember what happened to Paul when 00:13:51.19\00:13:53.16 they accused him of bringing Gentiles into the-- 00:13:53.19\00:13:55.70 Jëan: Right. 00:13:55.73\00:13:57.03 Doug: They nearly killed him. 00:13:57.07\00:13:58.37 Jëan: Right. 00:13:58.40\00:13:59.80 Doug: Thanks, appreciate your question, Jerry. 00:13:59.83\00:14:01.34 Jëan: Marion is listening in Canada. 00:14:01.37\00:14:03.20 Marion, welcome to the program. 00:14:03.24\00:14:05.04 Marion: Thank you, Pastors. 00:14:05.07\00:14:06.47 I have a Scripture, 1 Corinthians 15:29. 00:14:06.51\00:14:12.21 "Now, if there was no resurrection, what will those do 00:14:12.25\00:14:16.45 who are baptized for the dead, if the dead 00:14:16.48\00:14:19.75 are not raised at all? 00:14:19.79\00:14:21.69 Why are people baptized for them?" 00:14:21.72\00:14:25.33 Does this mean we're supposed to be being baptized for dead 00:14:25.36\00:14:29.76 relatives or other people? 00:14:29.80\00:14:33.07 Doug: Yes, I'll do my best to explain that. 00:14:33.10\00:14:35.07 This is a difficult verse, and the reason is because while the 00:14:35.10\00:14:39.84 Scriptures are perfectly inspired, translators had to 00:14:39.87\00:14:43.55 decide sometimes where to put the punctuation. 00:14:43.58\00:14:47.12 And if you punctuate this verse in the wrong way, 00:14:47.15\00:14:50.19 it gives a very wrong impression. 00:14:50.22\00:14:53.39 Nothing else in the Bible says that we could get baptized on 00:14:53.42\00:14:56.83 behalf of people that are dead, and then maybe they'll be saved. 00:14:56.86\00:15:00.16 People are not saved by the baptism of somebody else. 00:15:00.20\00:15:03.63 The Bible says it's appointed unto man once to die. 00:15:03.67\00:15:06.50 That's in Hebrews, I forget the verse. 00:15:06.53\00:15:08.37 Appointed unto man once to die and after this, the judgment. 00:15:08.40\00:15:10.71 So, after you die, your destiny is locked, as in the parable of 00:15:10.74\00:15:16.48 the rich man and Lazarus. 00:15:16.51\00:15:18.18 There's a great gulf fixed. 00:15:18.21\00:15:19.95 There's no changing teams once you die. 00:15:19.98\00:15:22.22 Jëan: That verse, Hebrews 9:27, the one you quoted. 00:15:22.25\00:15:25.32 Doug: Yes, so let me read this verse the way it should be 00:15:25.35\00:15:27.66 read if it's punctuated clearly. 00:15:27.69\00:15:30.86 Paul is discussing the resurrection with the people in 00:15:30.89\00:15:32.89 Corinth, and in chapter 15 he spends a lot of time talking 00:15:32.93\00:15:35.56 about it. 00:15:35.60\00:15:37.23 And he says, "Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized," 00:15:37.27\00:15:40.90 comma "for the dead," comma, "if the dead do not rise at all," 00:15:40.94\00:15:45.01 comma, "why then are they baptized?" 00:15:45.04\00:15:47.48 Question mark. 00:15:47.51\00:15:48.84 "For the dead?" Question mark. 00:15:48.88\00:15:51.45 He's saying if the dead don't rise, why do the believers even 00:15:51.48\00:15:53.11 get baptized? 00:15:53.15\00:15:54.48 Are they getting baptized for the dead? 00:15:54.52\00:15:55.92 And Paul's asking it as a rhetorical question. 00:15:55.95\00:15:57.99 He's not asking them to be baptized for the dead, 00:15:58.02\00:16:01.16 and we don't believe that the Corinthians were being 00:16:01.19\00:16:03.49 baptized for the dead. 00:16:03.53\00:16:05.33 He's just saying if there's no resurrection, then why do people 00:16:05.36\00:16:07.30 get baptized? 00:16:07.30\00:16:08.70 They doing it for the dead? 00:16:08.73\00:16:10.17 He's sort of saying it with a tongue in cheek, 'cause they 00:16:10.20\00:16:12.73 think everybody, some of the Corinthians were thinking 00:16:12.77\00:16:14.70 everybody died and it was over with. 00:16:14.74\00:16:17.01 And he's saying, what good is baptism? 00:16:17.04\00:16:19.54 So, yes, nobody should be baptized on behalf of someone 00:16:19.57\00:16:22.91 else that's dead. 00:16:22.94\00:16:24.25 I know they do that in the Latter-day Saint Church, but I 00:16:24.28\00:16:27.65 think they misinterpret this verse. 00:16:27.68\00:16:29.55 Jëan: You know, we've got a book talking about baptism. 00:16:29.58\00:16:31.12 It's called, "Baptism: Is It Really Necessary?" 00:16:31.15\00:16:33.59 We'll be happy to send this to anyone who calls and asks. 00:16:33.62\00:16:35.52 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:16:35.56\00:16:38.79 You can ask for the book. 00:16:38.83\00:16:40.36 It's called, "Baptism: Is It Really Necessary?" 00:16:40.40\00:16:42.56 You can dial #250 on your smartphone. 00:16:42.60\00:16:45.37 Say, "Bible Answers Live," and ask for the book 00:16:45.40\00:16:48.10 "Baptism: Is It Really Necessary?" 00:16:48.14\00:16:50.01 We'll be happy to send it to you if you're in Canada or the US; 00:16:50.04\00:16:52.81 otherwise, go to our website if you're outside of North America, 00:16:52.84\00:16:55.81 and you can read it right there at the Amazing Facts website. 00:16:55.84\00:16:59.25 We've got Brittany listening in California. 00:16:59.28\00:17:01.08 Brittany, welcome to the program. 00:17:01.12\00:17:03.22 Brittany: Hey, yes, my question is was Joseph of 00:17:03.25\00:17:07.49 Arimathea a Christian before the death and resurrection 00:17:07.52\00:17:12.19 of Christ or after? 00:17:12.23\00:17:15.30 Doug: All right, great. 00:17:15.33\00:17:16.73 Well, I think that when Joseph--he was sort of like a 00:17:16.77\00:17:19.57 secret follower up until the time of the crucifixion, and you 00:17:19.60\00:17:23.00 might say at that point he pretty much came out of the 00:17:23.04\00:17:25.24 closet when he went and talked to Pontius Pilate and said, 00:17:25.27\00:17:29.44 "I want the body of Jesus," and then he gave Jesus his own tomb, 00:17:29.48\00:17:34.08 and he professed Christ. 00:17:34.12\00:17:35.92 He not only did that, I think that he and Nicodemus paid for 00:17:35.95\00:17:38.55 the burial materials or most of it. 00:17:38.59\00:17:40.92 The women went to get some and came back Sunday morning. 00:17:40.96\00:17:43.76 So, I'd say that even before the resurrection, right about the 00:17:43.79\00:17:48.06 time of the crucifixion, he kind of came out. 00:17:48.10\00:17:50.97 But he had been, along with Nicodemus and maybe some others, 00:17:51.00\00:17:55.27 they had been believing and feeling sympathy for the 00:17:55.30\00:17:58.44 teachings of Christ and that he might be the Messiah. 00:17:58.47\00:18:01.54 And I think at the time that he died, Joseph was converted. 00:18:01.58\00:18:06.45 What do you think, Pastor Ross? 00:18:06.48\00:18:07.82 That makes sense? 00:18:07.85\00:18:09.15 Jëan: Yes, absolutely. 00:18:09.18\00:18:10.49 I'm just looking for the verse where it talks in Acts that 00:18:10.52\00:18:12.09 after the resurrection, in the early church it says that there 00:18:12.12\00:18:14.79 were even some priests that were converted. 00:18:14.82\00:18:17.39 Doug: Yes, I think in chapter 5. 00:18:17.43\00:18:18.76 Jëan: Yes, in chapter 5 of Acts. 00:18:18.79\00:18:20.10 So, there were quite a few, even those in high positions, that 00:18:20.13\00:18:22.56 recognized Christ as being the Messiah and accepted Him. 00:18:22.60\00:18:25.47 And here we have an example with Joseph of Arimathea, and you 00:18:25.50\00:18:27.90 mentioned Nicodemus, which we read about right in John chapter 00:18:27.94\00:18:30.47 3, at the very beginning of his ministry. 00:18:30.51\00:18:33.41 All right, thank you, Brittany. 00:18:33.44\00:18:34.78 We've got James in Tennessee. 00:18:34.81\00:18:36.34 James, welcome to the program. 00:18:36.38\00:18:38.91 James: Hey, good evening, Pastors. 00:18:38.95\00:18:40.32 Love all that you all do. 00:18:40.35\00:18:41.78 How are you all today? 00:18:41.82\00:18:43.12 Doug: Doing great. Thank you, James. 00:18:43.15\00:18:45.15 James: Doing great. 00:18:45.19\00:18:46.49 I was just saying, I've always went by the Bible and the Bible 00:18:46.52\00:18:48.69 only, and I read your name of God, but always trying to keep 00:18:48.72\00:18:52.49 the Ten Commandments like the first and second. 00:18:52.53\00:18:54.86 Does the Sefer got any biblical values to it? 00:18:54.93\00:18:58.37 Because I know it's got the book of Maccabees in it, and it had 00:18:58.40\00:19:00.47 the Old and New Testament in it. 00:19:00.50\00:19:02.80 Is the Sefer of any like biblical values today? 00:19:02.84\00:19:05.87 And in it, it says the Father and Son's name was Yahua, 00:19:05.91\00:19:10.21 and the Son's name was Yahusha, if I'm not mistaken. 00:19:10.25\00:19:13.82 Is there any reference to that, the Sefer to the Bible? 00:19:13.85\00:19:17.79 Is it holy? 00:19:17.82\00:19:19.32 Any holy meaning? 00:19:19.35\00:19:20.89 Doug: Yes, well, the Bible says--first of all, I think 00:19:20.92\00:19:22.86 you're quoting from one of what they call an apocryphal book. 00:19:22.89\00:19:25.73 These are some books that they may be in some of the Orthodox 00:19:25.76\00:19:28.53 Bibles, but most Protestants do not have them in their Bibles, 00:19:28.56\00:19:33.44 because they don't recognize them as authoritative 00:19:33.47\00:19:37.44 and part of the canon. 00:19:37.47\00:19:39.07 But to the bigger question, you know, God's name 00:19:39.11\00:19:41.78 is certainly holy. 00:19:41.81\00:19:43.61 There's been quite a bit of debate in recent years. 00:19:43.65\00:19:46.45 How do you say the sacred name of God? 00:19:46.48\00:19:49.18 When God told Moses, you know, "I'll be known by this name of 00:19:49.22\00:19:52.62 Jehovah," or the I AM THAT I AM, and then some have translated 00:19:52.65\00:19:57.73 the sacred name of God as Yahweh. 00:19:57.76\00:20:03.26 There were no vowels. 00:20:03.30\00:20:06.90 It was just consonants. 00:20:06.94\00:20:09.00 And wait, am I getting that right? 00:20:09.04\00:20:10.91 Yes. 00:20:10.94\00:20:12.31 And they didn't know exactly how to pronounce it, because the 00:20:12.34\00:20:16.61 Jews would sort of use a secret code name for the Lord. 00:20:16.64\00:20:20.22 They'd make it generic whenever that name came up, 00:20:20.25\00:20:22.78 because they thought it was too sacred to utter it. 00:20:22.82\00:20:25.32 And the correct pronunciation is a mystery now because, you know, 00:20:25.35\00:20:29.49 there's no recordings of how it was said. 00:20:29.52\00:20:31.63 But people shouldn't fixate on that, because God actually uses 00:20:31.66\00:20:35.10 many names in the Bible. 00:20:35.13\00:20:37.40 It wasn't just Jehovah. 00:20:37.43\00:20:38.83 He's called Elohim, the El Shaddai. 00:20:38.87\00:20:41.90 And you look in Revelation, and I think there's like 00:20:41.94\00:20:44.41 25 different names for Jesus, everything from the Alpha 00:20:44.44\00:20:49.28 and Omega to the Beginning, the I AM. 00:20:49.31\00:20:52.61 He's called the Living Water, the Bread of Life, the Good 00:20:52.65\00:20:56.95 Shepherd, the Door, the Son of Righteousness that arises 00:20:56.99\00:21:02.32 with healing in His wings. 00:21:02.36\00:21:03.69 You go through the Bible and the different names that God gives 00:21:03.73\00:21:05.59 himself, I don't think that the Lord cuts us off from praying if 00:21:05.63\00:21:11.17 we do not pronounce a particular name in the original tongue. 00:21:11.20\00:21:15.94 Jëan: You know, it's interesting. 00:21:15.97\00:21:17.21 When Jesus gave the example to the disciples, and they asked 00:21:17.24\00:21:19.34 Him, "Teach us how to pray," and Jesus said, "When you pray, 00:21:19.37\00:21:22.08 say 'Our Father in heaven.'" 00:21:22.11\00:21:24.08 He didn't say you need to mention a specific name of God. 00:21:24.11\00:21:26.72 But you understand that God is our Father, and we pray to Him. 00:21:26.75\00:21:30.39 We have a book that's called, "The Names of God," and we'll be 00:21:30.42\00:21:33.25 happy to send this to anyone who calls and asks. 00:21:33.29\00:21:35.22 The number for that is 800-835-6747. 00:21:35.26\00:21:39.19 And the book is called "The Names of God." 00:21:39.23\00:21:41.70 You can also dial #250. 00:21:41.73\00:21:44.00 Say "Bible Answers Live," and ask for the book, and we'll be 00:21:44.03\00:21:46.13 happy to send it to you if you're in North America. 00:21:46.17\00:21:48.70 Thanks, James. 00:21:48.74\00:21:50.24 We've got Anna in Oregon. 00:21:50.27\00:21:51.57 Anna, welcome to the program. 00:21:51.61\00:21:53.91 Anna: Evening, Pastors. 00:21:53.94\00:21:55.31 Doug: Evening. 00:21:55.34\00:21:56.91 Anna: My question is about the last words 00:21:56.95\00:22:00.18 of Jesus on the cross. 00:22:00.22\00:22:03.28 So, from Matthew 27:46, and Mark 15:34, they're the same. 00:22:03.32\00:22:11.59 But John 19:30, they're different. 00:22:11.63\00:22:14.36 I was wondering why they're different. 00:22:14.40\00:22:17.33 Doug: That's a good question. 00:22:17.37\00:22:18.67 And, you know, it is something of a mystery. 00:22:18.70\00:22:22.00 I did a message several years ago on the last words of a dying 00:22:22.04\00:22:25.84 man, and I went through the seven statements that Jesus 00:22:25.87\00:22:28.88 makes from the cross. 00:22:28.91\00:22:31.28 And when I went back and forth between Matthew, Mark, and John, 00:22:31.31\00:22:35.32 and even Luke, I came to the conclusion of many others that 00:22:35.35\00:22:41.92 Jesus' final words were, "It is finished. 00:22:41.96\00:22:45.06 Father, into your hands I commit My spirit." 00:22:45.09\00:22:48.56 It says, "Saying this, He breathed His last." 00:22:48.60\00:22:52.27 So, you know, earlier, He said, "I thirst." 00:22:52.30\00:22:56.84 Earlier, he said, you know, "Eloa, Eloa, lama sabachthani. 00:22:56.87\00:23:00.34 My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" 00:23:00.38\00:23:02.88 But I think the final words were, "It is finished. 00:23:02.91\00:23:06.65 Father, into Your hands, I commit My spirit." 00:23:06.68\00:23:08.68 Because then it says, "In saying this, He breathed his last." 00:23:08.72\00:23:12.05 But several of those words happened in quick succession. 00:23:12.09\00:23:14.56 When He said, "I thirst," they gave Him the vinegar, 00:23:14.59\00:23:16.89 He tasted it, and then He made this statement. 00:23:16.93\00:23:20.50 It's like that was the last thing He did. 00:23:20.53\00:23:22.96 So, does that make sense, Anna? 00:23:23.00\00:23:26.90 Anna: Yes, yes, absolutely, thank you. 00:23:26.94\00:23:29.07 Doug: All right. 00:23:29.10\00:23:30.41 Hey, thanks so much, appreciate your call. 00:23:30.44\00:23:31.84 Jëan: You know, Pastor Doug, I think one of the reasons we 00:23:31.87\00:23:33.44 have four Gospels is each of them, they obviously read the 00:23:33.48\00:23:36.41 other Gospels, they knew; and it's as if some of them, 00:23:36.44\00:23:39.21 John, one of the oldest of the Gospels, you know what, 00:23:39.25\00:23:42.12 there's one thing he said as well. 00:23:42.15\00:23:43.69 "I was there, I heard it. 00:23:43.72\00:23:45.09 I was standing at the foot of the cross." 00:23:45.12\00:23:46.89 Doug: He was right at the foot of the cross, 00:23:46.92\00:23:48.22 put that in there, "it is finished." 00:23:48.26\00:23:49.62 So, it's kind of a fuller, broader explanation. 00:23:49.66\00:23:51.16 So, it covers everything that Jesus said. 00:23:51.19\00:23:52.73 Doug: And John was standing there by Mary when Jesus said, 00:23:52.76\00:23:55.26 "Woman, behold thy son; son, behold thy mother." 00:23:55.30\00:23:58.27 And He kind of committed the care of His mother 00:23:58.30\00:23:59.67 to the apostle John. 00:23:59.70\00:24:01.07 So, He wanted to make sure and include that. 00:24:01.10\00:24:02.77 Jëan: Yes, it's in there. 00:24:02.80\00:24:04.11 All right, great. 00:24:04.14\00:24:05.47 Next caller that we have is Anthony, listening in New York. 00:24:05.51\00:24:07.94 Anthony, welcome to the program. 00:24:07.98\00:24:10.95 Anthony: Hello, Pastor Doug and Pastor Ross. 00:24:10.98\00:24:12.78 Doug: Hi. 00:24:12.81\00:24:14.55 Anthony: My question is based on Hebrews chapter 8, verse 5, 00:24:14.58\00:24:21.76 where it says that--where God told Moses to make the temple 00:24:21.79\00:24:27.66 according to the pattern that was shown him on the mountain. 00:24:27.73\00:24:30.80 And I've always wondered, well, what is that? 00:24:30.83\00:24:33.20 What does the pattern look like in the heavens 00:24:33.23\00:24:34.94 and the sanctuary? 00:24:34.97\00:24:36.40 But then I read in John chapter 2, verse 19 and through 21, 00:24:36.44\00:24:41.41 and Jesus said, "Destroy this temple, and in three days, 00:24:41.44\00:24:44.18 I will raise it up." 00:24:44.21\00:24:45.45 And in verse 21, it says that it was talking about His body. 00:24:45.48\00:24:48.52 And then in Revelation chapter 21, verse 20--I'm sorry, 21 and 00:24:48.55\00:24:53.19 verse 22, it says--and it's talking about the holy city--it 00:24:53.22\00:24:57.96 says, "I saw a temple therein, for the Lord God Almighty and 00:24:57.99\00:25:01.63 the Lamb are the temple of it." 00:25:01.66\00:25:04.20 So I just wanted to know your thoughts on, is there anything 00:25:04.23\00:25:08.34 we could take away from this to understand what the pattern 00:25:08.37\00:25:12.01 of the temple--excuse me--looked like in heaven? 00:25:12.04\00:25:16.01 Doug: Well, you know, there is a temple in heaven now 00:25:17.01\00:25:19.21 because Jesus is there interceding as our High Priest. 00:25:19.25\00:25:22.32 As far as the exact dimensions of it, you know, I think that 00:25:22.35\00:25:26.32 the earthly temple was a miniature 00:25:26.35\00:25:28.79 of the dwelling place of God. 00:25:28.82\00:25:30.39 I'm sure the dwelling place of God in heaven is infinitely 00:25:30.43\00:25:32.63 greater than the, you know, 70 or 75 or 100 feet that 00:25:32.66\00:25:37.13 the earthly temple was. 00:25:37.17\00:25:39.80 Solomon's Temple was bigger than the one that they had 00:25:39.83\00:25:41.74 in the wilderness. 00:25:41.77\00:25:43.64 And then the third temple that was built by Ezra and Nehemiah, 00:25:43.67\00:25:47.78 it was a little smaller in dimensions than Solomon's, 00:25:47.81\00:25:50.78 but I think it had a bigger porch, or bigger acreage. 00:25:50.81\00:25:54.45 So, but when it says there's no temple in it, there is a 00:25:54.48\00:25:58.72 dwelling place of God in heaven, talks about His throne. 00:25:58.75\00:26:02.86 There is no temple that is built around a sacrificial system, 00:26:02.89\00:26:07.50 because Christ is our sacrifice. 00:26:07.50\00:26:09.76 Sin is forever done away with, and there's no need for that. 00:26:09.80\00:26:12.90 Thoughts on that? 00:26:12.93\00:26:14.24 Jëan: Yes, absolutely. 00:26:14.27\00:26:15.57 You know, it's interesting during the 1,000 years, where 00:26:15.60\00:26:16.84 the redeemed are in heaven, you have a reference to the temple, 00:26:16.87\00:26:19.61 144,000, talks about there being a temple. 00:26:19.64\00:26:21.94 But when sin and sin is no more, at the end of the 1,000 years 00:26:21.98\00:26:25.05 and the earth is recreated, then it is that you get a reference 00:26:25.08\00:26:27.58 to there was no temple therein, for the Lamb is the temple. 00:26:27.62\00:26:31.19 Well, the purpose of the sanctuary or purpose of the 00:26:31.22\00:26:33.46 temple had met its fulfillment. 00:26:33.49\00:26:35.09 Sin and sinners were no more, all things were reconciled 00:26:35.12\00:26:38.06 and made complete. 00:26:38.09\00:26:39.43 So the heavenly sanctuary exists in that fashion as a sanctuary 00:26:39.46\00:26:43.80 until the plan of redemption has met its fulfillment. 00:26:43.83\00:26:46.50 Then there's no need for that phase of the sanctuary. 00:26:46.53\00:26:49.14 So, that's why John says, "I saw no temple therein." 00:26:49.17\00:26:52.31 Doug: Very good. 00:26:52.34\00:26:53.74 I hope that helps a little bit. 00:26:53.78\00:26:55.08 That's a great question, Anthony. 00:26:55.11\00:26:56.71 And we have a book that talks about, "God Drew the Plans." 00:26:56.75\00:26:58.78 Jëan: That's right. 00:26:58.81\00:27:00.18 It's one of our Amazing Facts study guides. 00:27:00.22\00:27:01.52 We'll be happy to send it to anyone wanting to learn 00:27:01.55\00:27:03.02 more about the sanctuary. 00:27:03.05\00:27:04.62 The number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:27:04.65\00:27:08.22 You can ask for the study guide. 00:27:08.26\00:27:09.66 It's called, "God Drew the Plans," or dial #250 on your 00:27:09.69\00:27:13.53 smartphone and say, "Bible Answers Live," 00:27:13.56\00:27:15.83 and say, "God Drew the Plans." 00:27:15.86\00:27:17.97 That's the name of the study guide, 00:27:18.00\00:27:19.30 and we will send it to you. 00:27:19.33\00:27:21.10 Doug: Yes, you'll be blessed. 00:27:21.14\00:27:22.70 Friends, we're going to take a brief break. 00:27:22.74\00:27:24.11 We're just at the halfway point. 00:27:24.14\00:27:25.84 There's more to come. 00:27:25.87\00:27:27.18 Call in with your Bible questions, and we'll get back 00:27:27.21\00:27:28.51 and do our best to answer them from the Word 00:27:28.54\00:27:31.71 in just a few moments. 00:27:31.75\00:27:33.48 ¤¤¤ 00:27:33.52\00:27:36.62 announcer: Stay tuned. 00:27:36.65\00:27:37.95 Bible Answers Live will return shortly. 00:27:37.99\00:27:39.99 ¤¤¤ 00:27:40.02\00:27:43.73 announcer: Are you looking for a simple way 00:27:45.26\00:27:46.59 to share your faith? 00:28:58.30\00:29:01.97 Is Jesus also eternal God? 00:29:02.00\00:29:04.34 Because Jesus is the Son of God, does that mean there was a time 00:29:04.37\00:29:07.28 when He did not exist or He was brought into existence? 00:29:07.31\00:29:10.75 Is the Holy Spirit a person, or is He just the force and the 00:29:10.78\00:29:14.62 energy that God uses to communicate? 00:29:14.65\00:29:17.25 You know, I thought this was so important I really felt led of 00:29:17.29\00:29:19.75 the Lord to write a book on the subject called "Exploring the 00:29:19.79\00:29:23.12 Trinity," one God or three. 00:29:23.16\00:29:25.36 In this book, we answer those very important questions. 00:29:25.39\00:29:27.96 We talk about the history of the Holy Spirit in the Old 00:29:27.96\00:29:30.37 Testament, as well as the history of the Holy Spirit in 00:29:30.40\00:29:32.80 the church and how it has been much debated. 00:29:32.83\00:29:35.47 This is something we really need to understand, 00:29:35.50\00:29:37.64 because Jesus said eternal life comes from knowing God. 00:29:37.67\00:29:42.08 ¤¤¤ 00:29:43.85\00:29:47.05 announcer: You're listening to Bible Answers Live, where 00:29:47.08\00:29:49.72 every question answered provides a clearer picture of God 00:29:49.75\00:29:53.25 and His plan to save you. 00:29:53.29\00:29:55.36 So, what are you waiting for? Hello, Pastors. 00:31:29.42\00:31:31.35 Please, my question comes from Revelation 2:17. 00:31:31.39\00:31:34.76 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says 00:31:34.79\00:31:37.59 to the churches. 00:31:37.63\00:31:39.29 To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. 00:31:39.33\00:31:42.86 And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new 00:31:42.90\00:31:45.73 name written which no one knows except him who receives it." 00:31:45.77\00:31:49.70 Please, I've heard that the new name will be based 00:31:49.74\00:31:52.44 on our personality. 00:31:52.47\00:31:54.01 But please, how come we will be the only one 00:31:54.04\00:31:56.88 that knows the new name? 00:31:56.91\00:31:59.58 Doug: Well, Pastor Ross may want to add to this, but I think 00:31:59.61\00:32:02.98 that we have a personal experience with the Lord 00:32:03.02\00:32:06.45 that is unique. 00:32:06.49\00:32:08.49 And so there'll be some name that, you know, we only 00:32:08.52\00:32:11.96 understand when it says we're the only ones who really knows. 00:32:11.99\00:32:14.93 It means we really are the only ones who know the depth 00:32:14.93\00:32:17.57 of what that means. 00:32:17.60\00:32:19.83 You know, Jesus gave a new name to Peter. 00:32:19.87\00:32:23.37 He was Simon; he called him Peter. 00:32:23.41\00:32:24.97 What are your thoughts? 00:32:25.01\00:32:26.41 Jëan: Yes, absolutely. 00:32:26.44\00:32:27.84 Well, let me first say something about the white stone and 00:32:27.88\00:32:29.38 the black stone, because it's kind of neat. 00:32:29.41\00:32:30.91 There was an ancient custom familiar back in the Roman times 00:32:30.95\00:32:34.32 where if a jury found somebody innocent of some crime, or, you 00:32:34.35\00:32:39.99 know, they were accused of a crime, but they were acquitted, 00:32:40.02\00:32:42.86 they were given a white stone. 00:32:42.89\00:32:44.59 If somebody was found guilty, they were given a black stone. 00:32:44.63\00:32:47.23 Well, here you have Jesus saying, "I'll give him a white 00:32:47.23\00:32:49.00 stone," meaning their sins are forgiven, they are acquitted. 00:32:49.03\00:32:52.30 And, of course, the name is a reference to character. 00:32:52.33\00:32:54.97 And it says, "Nobody knows their name, but the one 00:32:55.00\00:32:56.57 who receives it." 00:32:56.60\00:32:57.94 So there is a relationship that we each have 00:32:57.97\00:32:59.71 individually with God. 00:32:59.74\00:33:01.38 God knows our heart, He knows our characters. 00:33:01.41\00:33:03.85 And when He gives us that new name, 00:33:03.88\00:33:05.85 it's going to remind us of some deliverance 00:33:05.88\00:33:07.32 that He has provided for us individually. 00:33:07.35\00:33:09.42 Doug: Amen. 00:33:09.45\00:33:10.92 Jëan: And that's the significance of the white stone 00:33:10.95\00:33:12.39 with the name. 00:33:12.42\00:33:14.12 Doug: All right, well, thank you very much. 00:33:14.16\00:33:15.46 Hope that helps a little bit, Gina. 00:33:15.49\00:33:17.33 Jëan: Next caller that we have is Junith, 00:33:17.36\00:33:18.86 listening in Nevada. 00:33:18.89\00:33:20.20 Junith, welcome to the program. 00:33:20.23\00:33:22.90 Junith: Hello, good evening, Pastor Doug and Pastor Jëan. 00:33:22.93\00:33:27.37 My question is, what does God say in the Bible about the one 00:33:27.40\00:33:32.81 saved is not always saved? 00:33:32.84\00:33:36.08 Thank you. 00:33:36.11\00:33:37.78 Doug: Yes, I appreciate your call, Junith. 00:33:37.81\00:33:39.95 There are a lot of dear Christians, mostly from the 00:33:39.98\00:33:43.35 Protestant faith that believe in, it's really based 00:33:43.39\00:33:46.99 on John Calvin. 00:33:47.02\00:33:48.86 Now, John Calvin was a great Protestant reformer, but he, 00:33:48.89\00:33:52.66 I think, misunderstood some of the teachings of Paul 00:33:52.69\00:33:55.50 on predestination. 00:33:55.53\00:33:57.33 Peter said, there are some things that Paul says that are 00:33:57.37\00:33:59.63 hard to be understood, and I think that was one of the 00:33:59.67\00:34:02.60 things, and the idea being that God had pre-selected 00:34:02.64\00:34:06.41 who was going to be saved. 00:34:06.44\00:34:07.98 And once you are saved, you can't be lost. 00:34:08.01\00:34:10.61 Well, the Bible has a number of statements, including right here 00:34:10.65\00:34:13.45 in Revelation, where Jesus said, "Unless you repent, 00:34:13.48\00:34:16.12 I'll take its candlestick out of its place." 00:34:16.15\00:34:18.75 Peter talks about those who were once washed, but they turn back 00:34:18.79\00:34:23.22 to wallowing in the mire, like a dog that turns 00:34:23.26\00:34:26.13 to its vomit again. 00:34:26.16\00:34:27.66 He talks about people that were saved. 00:34:27.73\00:34:29.36 Hebrews chapter--is it chapter 6, where he said, "For it's 00:34:29.40\00:34:33.60 impossible once a person has tasted the heavenly, 00:34:33.64\00:34:36.34 gift if they be turned away, to renew them again." 00:34:36.37\00:34:40.74 Now, what that verse means, it requires some explanation, 00:34:40.78\00:34:44.05 but one thing is very clear. 00:34:44.08\00:34:45.55 There are people who were in a knowing relationship 00:34:45.58\00:34:48.68 with the Lord, and they turned away from it. 00:34:48.72\00:34:50.99 And then you have examples like a Judas, who was an apostle, 00:34:51.02\00:34:54.96 casting out devils, and following Jesus, and grieved 00:34:54.99\00:34:59.49 away the Holy Spirit, until Satan entered him. 00:34:59.53\00:35:01.96 King Saul was chosen by the Lord, filled with the Spirit. 00:35:02.00\00:35:05.20 Even says he was a prophet at one point. 00:35:05.23\00:35:07.34 But he began to rebel over the years, became proud, grieved 00:35:07.37\00:35:10.44 away the Holy Spirit, killed the priest, went to a witch, 00:35:10.47\00:35:13.54 and he died lost. 00:35:13.58\00:35:15.08 So, the idea that once you're saved, you lose your freedom to 00:35:15.11\00:35:17.81 choose is not taught anywhere in the Bible. 00:35:17.85\00:35:21.08 God doesn't take away our freedom to choose to turn away. 00:35:21.12\00:35:25.49 Jëan: We've got a book that's called, "Can a Saved Man 00:35:25.52\00:35:27.22 Choose to be Lost?" 00:35:27.26\00:35:28.96 It talks about this. 00:35:28.99\00:35:30.49 Doug: A lot of Scripture in there, that's good. 00:35:30.53\00:35:31.83 Jëan: And we'll be happy to send it again 00:35:31.86\00:35:33.16 to anyone who calls and asks. 00:35:33.19\00:35:34.56 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:35:34.56\00:35:36.83 Ask for the book, "Can a Saved Man Choose to be Lost?" 00:35:36.87\00:35:39.73 You can also get it, by dialing #250 on your smartphone, say, 00:35:39.77\00:35:43.34 "Bible Answers Live," and then ask for the book, 00:35:43.37\00:35:45.74 "Can a Saved Man Choose to be Lost?" 00:35:45.77\00:35:48.41 Doug: And, you know, Pastor Ross, I really recommend 00:35:48.44\00:35:50.45 that if there's anyone out there that is a little bit fuzzy 00:35:50.48\00:35:53.72 on that subject, you should ask for that book, 00:35:53.75\00:35:56.42 because the book is really powerful. 00:35:56.45\00:35:58.15 It's written by Joe Cruz, very easy to read, full of Scripture, 00:35:58.19\00:36:01.52 because it's dangerous for a person to think they're saved 00:36:01.56\00:36:05.59 if they're not. 00:36:05.63\00:36:07.13 That's where Jesus said, "Many will come to him in the judgment 00:36:07.13\00:36:09.50 and say, 'Lord, Lord, we cast out devils, did wonderful works, 00:36:09.53\00:36:13.10 taught in your name.' 00:36:13.13\00:36:14.44 He'll say, 'I don't know you.'" 00:36:14.47\00:36:15.80 So if you're thinking, "Well, I came to the altar when 00:36:15.84\00:36:18.31 I was 10 years old, and I was saved, but I'm not really 00:36:18.34\00:36:20.54 living for Jesus now; but once I'm saved, I can't be lost," 00:36:20.58\00:36:24.11 that's a dangerous belief. 00:36:24.15\00:36:25.68 Jëan: And maybe on the other side it's true, too. 00:36:25.71\00:36:27.65 People who feel like, "I'm so bad, there's no way 00:36:27.68\00:36:29.72 I can be saved. 00:36:29.75\00:36:31.15 I must be predestined to be lost." 00:36:31.19\00:36:32.72 Doug: That's right, it'll also give them hope. 00:36:32.75\00:36:34.19 Jëan: Yes, absolutely. 00:36:34.22\00:36:35.59 Next caller that we have is Lori, listening in Michigan. 00:36:35.62\00:36:37.39 Lori, welcome to the program. 00:36:37.43\00:36:39.89 Lori: Hi, Pastor Doug and Pastor Ross. 00:36:39.93\00:36:43.26 I was reading in Isaiah 6 this morning, and I come across 00:36:43.30\00:36:49.34 between the 9th chapter and the 13th chapter, and I was wanting 00:36:49.37\00:36:55.44 to find out when was this supposed to take place? 00:36:55.48\00:36:59.51 Doug: Well, chapter 6 begins with him explaining his 00:36:59.55\00:37:03.05 conversion experience, saying, "In the year that King Uzziah 00:37:03.08\00:37:06.15 died, I saw the Lord." 00:37:06.19\00:37:08.36 And then, you know, he feels he's not worthy. 00:37:08.39\00:37:11.99 He says, "Now woe is me," and God forgives him, 00:37:12.03\00:37:13.96 and says, "Who will I send?" 00:37:14.00\00:37:15.63 And he kind of accepts the role of prophet, and then God says, 00:37:15.66\00:37:18.60 "Go tell this people." 00:37:18.63\00:37:20.47 And then as you read in the following chapters, he's got 00:37:20.50\00:37:23.87 several chapters with a message for Israel, and this is during 00:37:23.91\00:37:27.44 the time of Ahaz and Hezekiah, and I think even, is it Amos? 00:37:27.48\00:37:37.49 Anyway, Manasseh, ultimately the son of Hezekiah, killed him. 00:37:37.95\00:37:41.22 So Isaiah prophesied during the time of three kings. 00:37:41.26\00:37:45.33 Actually, I think it tells us that, yes, in the first verse, 00:37:45.36\00:37:48.63 during the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, 00:37:48.66\00:37:51.13 four kings. 00:37:51.17\00:37:52.77 Jëan: And, of course, he prophesied shortly before 00:37:52.80\00:37:55.04 Jerusalem was conquered by the Babylonians. 00:37:55.07\00:37:57.74 Doug: Right, but that was still about 60 years away 00:37:57.77\00:38:00.54 from that time. 00:38:00.58\00:38:02.28 But so the message is you're reading those chapters, 00:38:02.31\00:38:06.41 He's kind of calling them out for their disobedience. 00:38:06.45\00:38:10.52 So is that answering what you're asking? 00:38:10.55\00:38:14.26 Lori: No, actually, what I was asking is from verse 9 00:38:14.29\00:38:18.19 to verse 13. 00:38:18.23\00:38:19.73 Doug: Of chapter 6. 00:38:19.76\00:38:21.06 Lori: Of chapter 6, yes. 00:38:21.10\00:38:23.37 Doug: I see. 00:38:23.40\00:38:25.03 I thought you were going from chapter 9, okay. 00:38:25.07\00:38:26.74 Lori: I'm sorry. 00:38:26.77\00:38:28.44 Doug: So, he says, "Go tell this people: 'Keep on hearing, 00:38:28.47\00:38:29.90 but do not understand; keep seeing, but do not perceive.' 00:38:29.94\00:38:32.11 Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and 00:38:32.14\00:38:34.21 shut their eyes--" Is that the part that 00:38:34.24\00:38:36.11 you're wondering about? 00:38:36.14\00:38:37.71 Lori: Yes. 00:38:37.75\00:38:39.48 Doug: Yes, God does not want people to be lost. 00:38:39.51\00:38:46.15 I think the Lord is saying that you continue talking to them, 00:38:46.19\00:38:49.39 and they don't listen. 00:38:49.42\00:38:51.19 They ultimately grieve away the Spirit. 00:38:51.23\00:38:53.73 And through his preaching, as they continue to resist, 00:38:53.76\00:38:57.17 their hearts became hard. 00:38:57.20\00:38:59.03 So in that sense, you could say your preaching is just--as 00:38:59.07\00:39:02.84 they continue to refuse--and stop their ears. 00:39:02.87\00:39:05.11 They're hardening their hearts. 00:39:05.14\00:39:06.81 Jëan: And then, also, if you look in verse 11, I find it 00:39:06.84\00:39:09.18 interesting, he asks the question, he says, "How long?" 00:39:09.21\00:39:11.55 How long is he to prophesy? 00:39:11.58\00:39:13.62 And the answer comes back, "Until the cities are laid waste 00:39:13.65\00:39:16.35 without inhabitants, and the houses without a man, 00:39:16.38\00:39:18.25 and the land is utterly desolate." 00:39:18.29\00:39:20.39 Well, that was a prophecy that, as you mentioned, really met its 00:39:20.42\00:39:23.46 fulfillment just some 60, 70 years later with the destruction 00:39:23.49\00:39:26.93 of Jerusalem. 00:39:26.96\00:39:28.43 So, Isaiah was a prophet providing warning to the 00:39:28.46\00:39:31.27 inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the Jews 00:39:31.30\00:39:33.67 that judgment was coming. 00:39:33.70\00:39:35.14 So, it's all in that context. 00:39:35.17\00:39:36.54 And it talks about a tenth being--or a tenth will return. 00:39:36.57\00:39:39.71 It talks about those who's like a tree that's cut down 00:39:39.74\00:39:42.58 and the stump remains. 00:39:42.61\00:39:44.81 So, a remnant will return back to Jerusalem. 00:39:44.85\00:39:47.68 And, of course, that happened after the 70 years 00:39:47.72\00:39:49.12 of Babylonian captivity. 00:39:49.15\00:39:50.59 So, that's kind of the context, I think, that's being referred 00:39:50.62\00:39:52.39 to there in those verses. 00:39:52.42\00:39:53.89 Doug: Yes, and Jesus even quotes that very verse from 00:39:53.92\00:39:55.72 Isaiah when he said, "These people have ears, but they don't 00:39:55.76\00:39:59.73 hear; they have eyes, but they don't see, they don't 00:39:59.76\00:40:02.03 understand, lest I should heal them and forgive them." 00:40:02.06\00:40:04.90 So he wanted to have them listen. 00:40:04.93\00:40:07.60 Thank you, appreciate that, Lori. 00:40:07.64\00:40:09.50 Hope that helps a little bit. 00:40:09.54\00:40:11.07 Jëan: We've got Henry listening in New York. 00:40:11.11\00:40:12.54 Henry, welcome to the program. 00:40:12.57\00:40:14.81 Henry: Yes, good evening, Pastor Doug. 00:40:14.84\00:40:16.98 My question is, Noah, it took him 120 years to build that ark. 00:40:17.01\00:40:23.52 God took two of each animal. 00:40:23.55\00:40:28.02 Did he have room enough for the whales? 00:40:28.06\00:40:32.33 Doug: Yes, well, when it says that God took two of each 00:40:32.36\00:40:34.36 animal, it's talking about animals that were living 00:40:34.40\00:40:37.17 on the land. 00:40:37.20\00:40:38.90 He didn't need to put sea creatures in the ark because, 00:40:38.93\00:40:43.14 you know, they survived just fine in the water. 00:40:43.17\00:40:45.87 I'm just absolutely amazed every year. 00:40:45.91\00:40:49.24 We see the creeks around our place up in the mountains flood. 00:40:49.28\00:40:53.31 They're full of rocks and mud. 00:40:53.35\00:40:55.38 And I think there's fish in there. 00:40:55.42\00:40:56.85 How do the fish survive? 00:40:56.89\00:40:59.29 And when the water settles down, here are the fish. 00:40:59.32\00:41:02.69 I'm going, how'd they live through that? 00:41:02.72\00:41:04.36 All that mud, breathing that mud, and the rocks going, and 00:41:04.39\00:41:07.03 the torrents of water, and somehow they--I don't know 00:41:07.03\00:41:09.16 how they did it. 00:41:09.20\00:41:10.63 But I think some sea creatures probably did die out in the 00:41:10.67\00:41:13.20 flood, but most of them, whales in particular, they just go to 00:41:13.23\00:41:16.60 the surface and breathe. 00:41:16.64\00:41:18.21 So, the one that have to breathe through their gills, I would 00:41:18.24\00:41:20.01 think it'd be really tough on. 00:41:20.04\00:41:21.74 So, no sea creatures, He didn't have a little bowl with goldfish 00:41:21.78\00:41:24.88 inside the ark. 00:41:24.91\00:41:26.35 Jëan: That's right. All right, thank you, Henry. 00:41:26.38\00:41:28.22 We've got Eron listening in New York. 00:41:28.25\00:41:29.88 Eron, welcome to the program. 00:41:29.92\00:41:31.39 Eron: Good evening, Pastors. 00:41:31.42\00:41:32.79 Doug: Good evening. 00:41:32.82\00:41:34.29 Eron: I was reading the comments in the chat box on the 00:41:34.32\00:41:36.99 YouTube live stream of this very show, and I saw this question 00:41:37.03\00:41:41.43 that I would like you to respond on this very show. 00:41:41.46\00:41:44.97 The question is, did Jesus raise Himself from the grave 00:41:45.00\00:41:48.77 or did God the Father raise Him by calling Him? 00:41:48.80\00:41:53.21 Doug: Yes, that's a very important and it can be a 00:41:53.24\00:41:56.98 confusing question because Jesus does say in one place, "I have 00:41:57.01\00:41:59.81 power to lay My life down, and I have power to raise it up." 00:41:59.85\00:42:03.59 Jëan: That's John 10:17. 00:42:03.62\00:42:05.72 Doug: Thank you, yes. 00:42:05.75\00:42:07.29 So, how could someone that is dead raise themselves? 00:42:07.32\00:42:12.39 Because by virtue of being dead, it's hard to. 00:42:12.43\00:42:16.20 Jëan: You don't know anything. 00:42:16.23\00:42:17.67 Doug: Yes, it's like waking yourself up without an alarm. 00:42:17.70\00:42:19.43 And some people can do it. 00:42:19.47\00:42:20.84 But I think when Jesus said, "I have power to raise it up," 00:42:20.87\00:42:24.87 the word--you know, Jesus prophesied several times. 00:42:24.91\00:42:27.74 He said, "I will rise the third day." 00:42:27.78\00:42:29.41 The very word that He spoke, His prophecies never failed. 00:42:29.44\00:42:34.12 And so because Christ is one with the Father--it was, you 00:42:34.15\00:42:38.02 know, the Father that, of course, 00:42:38.05\00:42:39.82 I think called Him forth. 00:42:39.85\00:42:41.82 But that's something of a mystery. 00:42:41.86\00:42:43.69 I don't know. What are your thoughts? 00:42:43.73\00:42:45.06 Jëan: Yes, you know, I think you used an illustration that's 00:42:45.09\00:42:46.76 probably good of sleep. 00:42:46.80\00:42:49.03 You know, you can't wake yourself up per se. 00:42:49.06\00:42:52.37 But somebody can wake you up. 00:42:52.40\00:42:54.07 You still have to wake yourself up, but they call you, 00:42:54.10\00:42:56.47 and you wake up. 00:42:56.50\00:42:57.81 Doug: Yes. 00:42:57.84\00:42:59.21 Jëan: So, some have seen it or illustrated, as the 00:42:59.24\00:43:00.68 Father calls the Son, and the Son arises. 00:43:00.71\00:43:03.61 So, yes, Jesus had power to raise himself up, but the Father 00:43:03.65\00:43:07.92 called him, and the angel came down and rolled away the stone, 00:43:07.95\00:43:10.55 and called Christ, and He rose from the dead. 00:43:10.59\00:43:13.52 Doug: Yes, that's a good answer. 00:43:13.56\00:43:15.59 I hope that helps a little bit, Eron, and you can share 00:43:15.62\00:43:18.43 that with the friends on the chat there. 00:43:18.46\00:43:20.53 Jëan: All right, thank you, Eron. 00:43:20.56\00:43:21.96 Next caller that we have is Brad listening in Tennessee. 00:43:22.00\00:43:24.00 Brad, welcome to the program. 00:43:24.03\00:43:25.80 Brad: Hey, Pastor, thank you so much. 00:43:25.83\00:43:27.67 I appreciate your program. 00:43:27.70\00:43:29.24 Doug: Thanks, Brad. Appreciate your calling in. 00:43:29.27\00:43:31.64 Brad: This is my question for tonight. 00:43:31.67\00:43:33.78 With all the recent talk in the US government about seeing 00:43:33.81\00:43:37.31 lights in the sky, or experiencing military 00:43:37.35\00:43:40.55 silence--wait--what does the Bible say about that? 00:43:40.58\00:43:45.49 Also, I know, I was wondering if you'd ever seen something. 00:43:45.52\00:43:51.86 Doug: Okay, you're cutting, your voice is cutting out 00:43:51.89\00:43:53.53 a little bit. 00:43:53.56\00:43:54.93 But I think you're asking, you know, what do I--what does the 00:43:54.93\00:43:57.87 Bible say about the UFOs? 00:43:57.90\00:43:59.90 And have I ever seen as a pilot a UFO? 00:43:59.93\00:44:02.97 Second part of the question, of course, I'll answer first. 00:44:03.00\00:44:06.88 A UFO is an unidentified flying object. 00:44:06.91\00:44:10.25 And there's other words in terms of use. 00:44:10.28\00:44:11.98 But have I ever seen one? 00:44:12.01\00:44:13.31 Yes. 00:44:13.35\00:44:14.82 And I remember seeing one flying with Karen. 00:44:14.85\00:44:17.92 I said, "Look, there's a flying saucer. 00:44:17.95\00:44:19.95 There's this red flying saucer." 00:44:19.99\00:44:22.42 And I just couldn't resist getting closer to find out 00:44:22.46\00:44:24.43 what it was. 00:44:24.46\00:44:25.99 And someone had released a red mylar, you know, those mylar 00:44:26.03\00:44:29.06 balloons are kind of a, they look metallic, but it wasn't 00:44:29.10\00:44:32.47 a regular round balloon. 00:44:32.50\00:44:34.17 It was floating in the saucer's shape, and I started flying 00:44:34.20\00:44:38.91 over, and I said, "Oh, man, it's a balloon." 00:44:38.94\00:44:41.24 But in the sun, when the sun hit it, it looked much bigger, 00:44:41.28\00:44:44.55 and I thought it was a flying saucer. 00:44:44.58\00:44:48.08 But, yes, I was surprised that even during one of the recent 00:44:48.12\00:44:51.72 Republican debates, as someone fielded a question about UFOs, 00:44:51.75\00:44:56.39 he kind of resented that they gave him that question. 00:44:56.42\00:44:59.16 But it has been in the news lately. 00:44:59.19\00:45:02.73 You know, I don't think--I do believe there's intelligent life 00:45:02.76\00:45:05.30 on other planets. 00:45:05.33\00:45:06.87 I don't think there's any doubt about that. 00:45:06.90\00:45:08.97 You know, certainly we know God has angels, and there's fallen 00:45:09.00\00:45:11.17 angels, and Revelation talks about, you know, through Christ 00:45:11.21\00:45:14.31 God made the worlds; actually, that's Hebrews 00:45:14.34\00:45:17.31 chapter 1, verse 2. 00:45:17.35\00:45:19.45 But, and I think also in Colossians, it says that there 00:45:19.48\00:45:22.78 are other beings. 00:45:22.82\00:45:25.25 But I don't think that the unfallen worlds are being 00:45:25.29\00:45:27.52 allowed to interact with our world, because we've got 00:45:27.56\00:45:29.69 this disease of sin. 00:45:29.72\00:45:32.19 The only people involved in our planet are the hospital staff. 00:45:32.23\00:45:35.76 That would be God, the Father, Son, Spirit, and the angels. 00:45:35.80\00:45:39.00 And once we're redeemed from sin, I think we'll be able to 00:45:39.03\00:45:42.17 interact with unfallen beings again, or holy beings but-- 00:45:42.20\00:45:47.68 Jëan: And, of course, the devil has access to the earth. 00:45:47.71\00:45:50.48 And he might, you know, he's a deceiver from the beginning, it 00:45:50.51\00:45:52.88 might serve his ends to make it appear as though there's some 00:45:52.91\00:45:56.25 intelligent life, or flying saucer, or whatever it might be. 00:45:56.28\00:45:59.62 But, yes, as you mentioned-- 00:45:59.65\00:46:02.19 Doug: He's an angel of light, he can cause deception, 00:46:02.22\00:46:04.79 he can bring fire down from heaven. 00:46:04.83\00:46:06.46 Jëan: Right. 00:46:06.49\00:46:07.86 Doug: So, yes, I think a lot of these sightings, some of them 00:46:07.93\00:46:09.70 are just common misunderstandings. 00:46:09.73\00:46:11.93 Some of them may be spiritual deception. 00:46:11.97\00:46:14.57 Says in the last days, three unclean spirits like 00:46:14.60\00:46:17.57 frogs--where's that Revelation 16--come out of the mouth of the 00:46:17.61\00:46:20.58 beast, the dragon, the false prophet, and they go forth 00:46:20.61\00:46:23.38 and do miracles. 00:46:23.41\00:46:24.88 So I don't, I don't know if flying saucers are the miracles 00:46:24.91\00:46:27.18 they do or UFOs, but there is going to be deception. 00:46:27.22\00:46:30.89 Jëan: That's right. Okay, thank you, Brad. 00:46:30.92\00:46:32.75 We've got Cedric listening in Florida. 00:46:32.79\00:46:34.86 Cedric, welcome to the program. 00:46:34.89\00:46:36.86 Cedric: Thank you, Pastors. How are you doing tonight? 00:46:36.89\00:46:39.36 Doug: Much better than we deserve. 00:46:39.39\00:46:42.80 Cedric: I have a question for you, and it's based 00:46:42.83\00:46:44.67 on Revelation 22 and the second verse, 00:46:44.70\00:46:50.01 regarding the tree of life. 00:46:50.04\00:46:54.08 Doug: It says, "In the middle of its street, on either side 00:46:54.11\00:46:55.98 of the river, there was the tree of life." 00:46:56.01\00:46:58.81 Cedric: Yes. 00:46:58.85\00:47:01.48 Doug: So how can you have the tree of life, but it's on both 00:47:01.52\00:47:04.62 sides of the river? 00:47:04.65\00:47:06.92 Cedric: No, no, my question is that there is probably more 00:47:06.96\00:47:10.13 than one tree of life. 00:47:10.16\00:47:12.76 Doug: Well, you know, it's always referred to in the 00:47:12.79\00:47:15.23 singular in the Old Testament and the New Testament. 00:47:15.26\00:47:19.40 So, the way some scholars have understood that 00:47:19.43\00:47:22.07 is this is an enormous tree. 00:47:22.10\00:47:24.61 I mean, we live in California where we've got trees 00:47:24.64\00:47:26.54 that are almost 400 feet tall. 00:47:26.57\00:47:29.14 This is an enormous tree that has--it goes down on both sides 00:47:29.18\00:47:35.12 of the river, and its branches grow together above the river, 00:47:35.15\00:47:39.42 so it's almost like the river runs through it, 00:47:39.45\00:47:42.12 and it's got 12 different kinds of fruit. 00:47:42.16\00:47:44.26 So, this tree is an extraordinary tree. 00:47:44.29\00:47:47.03 And I know people are thinking, "Well, that's kind of hard 00:47:47.10\00:47:48.96 to imagine." 00:47:49.00\00:47:50.37 Well, that's good, because Paul said that you can't even imagine 00:47:50.40\00:47:52.77 the things that God has prepared. 00:47:52.80\00:47:54.90 But it's really clear, the word there is a singular tree. 00:47:54.94\00:47:58.21 It's not plural in Greek or in the Hebrew, but it's on both 00:47:58.24\00:48:01.24 sides of the river, and it's got 12 different kinds of fruit. 00:48:01.28\00:48:04.91 Cedric: In this verse, it says, "Each tree of life which 00:48:04.95\00:48:07.88 bore those fruits." 00:48:07.92\00:48:09.58 You know? 00:48:09.62\00:48:10.99 Jëan: Yes, maybe I can add to that. 00:48:11.02\00:48:12.49 If you look at the King James--I'm looking at the New 00:48:12.52\00:48:13.99 King James. 00:48:14.02\00:48:15.42 If you look at the word "tree," it is in italics. 00:48:15.46\00:48:17.39 So the italics, the words that you see in the Bible, 00:48:17.43\00:48:20.60 they were added by the translators for context. 00:48:20.63\00:48:23.60 So if you read it without that, it would say, 00:48:23.63\00:48:25.53 "Each yielding its fruit every month." 00:48:25.57\00:48:28.27 So it's talking about the tree of life that reaches on either 00:48:28.30\00:48:30.44 side of the river and each side is bearing 00:48:30.47\00:48:33.68 its fruit every month. 00:48:33.71\00:48:35.24 The word "tree" was added just for context. 00:48:35.28\00:48:38.58 Cedric: Okay. 00:48:38.61\00:48:39.98 Doug: Yes, so it's a singular tree. 00:48:40.02\00:48:43.35 Yes, the first word "tree" that you find there is singular. 00:48:43.39\00:48:48.12 Cedric: Yes, but let me ask a question. 00:48:48.16\00:48:51.03 In the new earth, you have in the new earth, where you have 00:48:51.06\00:48:54.30 millions of redeemed. 00:48:54.30\00:48:56.43 Will it be okay to have just one tree of life? 00:48:56.46\00:49:00.27 Doug: Yes, if the tree is big enough and if you don't have 00:49:00.30\00:49:02.07 to eat from it every day. 00:49:02.10\00:49:03.74 Adam ate from the tree of life, you know, Adam ate from the tree 00:49:03.77\00:49:06.44 of life a few times, and it kept him going for 900 years. 00:49:06.47\00:49:09.64 Jëan: That's right. 00:49:09.68\00:49:11.08 And, you know, it talks about 12 different kinds of fruit. 00:49:11.11\00:49:12.98 It talks about all the redeemed coming up and gathering in the 00:49:13.01\00:49:15.15 New Jerusalem every month and every Sabbath. 00:49:15.18\00:49:18.25 Well, every month you go and try out a different kind 00:49:18.29\00:49:20.22 of fruit on the tree. 00:49:20.26\00:49:21.89 So, it's a big tree. 00:49:21.92\00:49:23.36 It said, "Eye has not seen, ear hasn't heard, neither entered 00:49:23.39\00:49:26.63 into the heart of man the things that God is preparing 00:49:26.66\00:49:28.70 for those that love him." 00:49:28.73\00:49:30.27 All right, thank you, Cedric. 00:49:30.30\00:49:31.60 Good question. 00:49:31.63\00:49:33.07 We're ready with our next caller, Sean. 00:49:33.10\00:49:35.07 He's listening from Michigan. Sean, welcome to the program. 00:49:35.10\00:49:39.31 Sean: Thank you so much. 00:49:39.34\00:49:40.68 My question is from Deuteronomy 22:11, which says, 00:49:40.71\00:49:45.41 "Thou shall not wear a garment of divers sorts 00:49:45.45\00:49:48.35 as of woollen and linen together." 00:49:48.38\00:49:51.19 And I didn't know if that only applied at the time that it was 00:49:51.22\00:49:54.69 written unto Israel as a nation or if it still applies today 00:49:54.72\00:49:58.73 and how we could know. 00:49:58.76\00:50:01.33 Doug: Yes, you know, I think that he says 00:50:01.36\00:50:03.43 this also in context of several other commandments. 00:50:03.47\00:50:07.67 Well, for one thing, if you are wearing, you know, one is a 00:50:07.70\00:50:13.44 vegetable and one is an animal. 00:50:13.48\00:50:16.14 Wool comes from an animal, linen comes from a plant. 00:50:16.18\00:50:19.65 They do not wash and wear the same, they do not shrink and 00:50:19.68\00:50:23.72 warm the same, and then He goes on and He says, you're not to, 00:50:23.75\00:50:27.59 you know, you're not to hook a donkey and an oxen together. 00:50:27.62\00:50:31.83 They're two different animals, and they're going 00:50:31.86\00:50:33.43 to pull differently. 00:50:33.46\00:50:35.10 And then, you know, he also talks about that people should 00:50:35.13\00:50:37.80 not be having intimate relationships with animals. 00:50:37.83\00:50:41.30 But if you sew a patch of linen on a wool garment, 00:50:41.34\00:50:47.44 it's just going to tear it out. 00:50:47.48\00:50:49.14 They don't match, they don't mix. 00:50:49.18\00:50:51.01 And I think that's the point. 00:50:51.05\00:50:52.38 I don't--I can't think of anything we wear today 00:50:52.41\00:50:54.85 that's a combination of wool and linen. 00:50:54.88\00:50:57.22 We still don't mix them in together. 00:50:57.25\00:50:59.62 Jëan: Just from practical reasons. 00:50:59.65\00:51:01.19 And also I think, if you read the whole context of the 00:51:01.22\00:51:03.02 chapter, God is making a distinction between the dress 00:51:03.06\00:51:07.36 and the traditions of the Jews to the other nations 00:51:07.40\00:51:11.30 that were around them. 00:51:11.33\00:51:12.57 Now, I don't know if the other nations mixed these different 00:51:12.60\00:51:14.60 fabrics together, but it talks about not making cuttings 00:51:14.64\00:51:17.94 in your flesh for the dead. 00:51:17.97\00:51:19.54 It talks about not shaving their heads the way the pagans did, 00:51:19.57\00:51:23.65 the nations around them. 00:51:23.68\00:51:25.85 So, God wanted them to be modest in their dress 00:51:25.88\00:51:27.45 and also to have a distinction. 00:51:27.48\00:51:29.08 They were different. 00:51:29.12\00:51:30.42 They were his people, and they were different from the nations 00:51:30.45\00:51:32.49 there in Israel or surrounding Israel. 00:51:32.52\00:51:35.56 Glenn, Ohio, welcome to the program. 00:51:35.59\00:51:38.19 Glenn: Thank you for taking my call. 00:51:38.23\00:51:40.30 Doug: Yes. 00:51:40.33\00:51:41.63 Glenn: And my question concerns the Scripture that's 00:51:41.66\00:51:43.30 very popular, and that is 2nd Corinthians 5:8 where Paul says 00:51:43.33\00:51:49.10 that he would rather be absent from the body 00:51:49.14\00:51:51.77 and present with the Lord. 00:51:51.81\00:51:53.64 I know many Christian churches use that as verification that 00:51:53.68\00:51:55.74 when you die a Christian, you go to heaven. 00:51:55.78\00:51:58.05 But Paul did not say to be absent from the body is to be 00:51:58.08\00:52:02.02 present with the Lord. 00:52:02.05\00:52:03.62 The key word is rather. 00:52:03.65\00:52:05.29 He said I would rather be absent from the body and present 00:52:05.32\00:52:08.29 with the Lord, and that includes a whole bunch of us. 00:52:08.32\00:52:11.03 I was just wondering how you folks felt about that. 00:52:11.06\00:52:13.63 Doug: Well, I agree. 00:52:13.66\00:52:15.00 I think that Paul is making a comparison here. 00:52:15.03\00:52:19.00 But for a believer, if you die, you sleep until the 00:52:19.03\00:52:24.84 resurrection, but you have no consciousness of time. 00:52:24.87\00:52:28.34 So the next thought is the resurrection. 00:52:28.38\00:52:31.25 The Bible is pretty clear that the dead in Christ rise after 00:52:31.28\00:52:34.58 the return of the Lord, not before that. 00:52:34.62\00:52:37.19 And Jesus said to Mary and Martha--they said, "Oh, we know 00:52:37.22\00:52:42.72 he'll rise up the last day." 00:52:42.76\00:52:45.29 So they were all clear. 00:52:45.33\00:52:46.80 The resurrection was in the last day, the day of the Lord, 00:52:46.83\00:52:49.73 the Second Coming. 00:52:49.76\00:52:51.57 For a believer, when you die, and you're absent from the body, 00:52:51.60\00:52:54.57 your next conscious thought is the resurrection. 00:52:54.60\00:52:57.04 So, you know, I can comfort people when they say, 00:52:57.07\00:53:00.44 "Well, he's with the Lord now." 00:53:00.48\00:53:02.01 And I'll say, "Well, he's not yet." 00:53:02.04\00:53:03.55 But for him, if a person dies, yes, their next conscious 00:53:03.58\00:53:07.12 thought is the resurrection. 00:53:07.15\00:53:08.72 But it hasn't happened yet. 00:53:08.75\00:53:11.12 The Bible is pretty clear that those that are in the graves 00:53:11.15\00:53:13.99 will hear His voice and come forth when He returns. 00:53:14.02\00:53:17.46 And that has not happened yet. 00:53:17.49\00:53:19.23 So, what would the point be of a resurrection and a judgment if 00:53:19.26\00:53:22.60 people are already in heaven? 00:53:22.63\00:53:25.10 Jëan: And, of course, we have a study guide on the subject. 00:53:25.13\00:53:27.00 It's called, "Are the Dead Really Dead?" 00:53:27.04\00:53:28.80 And we'll be happy to send this to anyone who calls and asks. 00:53:28.84\00:53:31.17 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:53:31.21\00:53:34.91 You can ask for that study guide. been reading Revelation chapter 11. 00:53:53.50\00:53:58.53 Is it talking about the two witnesses? 00:53:58.57\00:54:01.10 And if so, is it Moses and Elijah? 00:54:01.14\00:54:04.84 Doug: Well, a lot of people--I'm sorry, go ahead. 00:54:04.87\00:54:07.74 Ruth: And are they going to be coming down to earth before 00:54:07.78\00:54:11.58 Jesus comes, as well? 00:54:11.61\00:54:13.98 Doug: Thank you. 00:54:14.02\00:54:15.42 No, the two witnesses are a symbol of Moses and Elijah. 00:54:15.45\00:54:18.72 Moses and Elijah are in heaven. 00:54:18.75\00:54:20.12 They've got their reward. 00:54:20.16\00:54:21.76 They're mentioned in Mark chapter 9. 00:54:21.79\00:54:23.89 They are not coming down to the earth and dying again. 00:54:23.93\00:54:26.70 Moses represents the law. 00:54:26.73\00:54:28.60 Elijah represents the prophets. 00:54:28.63\00:54:30.90 We've actually got a free book we'll send you. 00:54:30.93\00:54:32.63 It's called, "The Two Witnesses and the Glorious Mount." 00:54:32.67\00:54:35.50 If you call in, we'll send that to you. 00:54:35.54\00:54:37.57 But we're out of time for this segment of our Bible questions. 00:54:37.61\00:54:41.51 Now, let me explain. 00:54:41.54\00:54:43.24 If you've not heard this before, we have an unusual ending 00:54:43.28\00:54:46.31 for our program, because we have satellite listeners 00:54:46.35\00:54:48.55 around 00:55:32.69\00:55:34.20 your Bible question. 00:55:34.23\00:55:35.73 If you'd like to send us a Bible question via email, it's just 00:55:35.76\00:55:38.87 BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:55:38.90\00:55:42.67 That's BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:55:42.70\00:55:45.47 Pastor Doug, here's the first one. 00:55:45.51\00:55:47.08 It came from Capetown, South Africa. 00:55:47.11\00:55:48.88 I know that place quite well. 00:55:48.91\00:55:50.35 Doug: It's where you were born. Jëan: That's right. 00:55:50.38\00:55:51.91 The question is, is Satan the scapegoat described 00:55:51.95\00:55:54.82 in Leviticus chapter 16? 00:55:54.85\00:55:57.19 After all, it says both goats needed to be blemish-free. 00:55:57.22\00:56:01.66 Doug: Well, every creature that was brought to the 00:56:01.69\00:56:03.79 sanctuary needed to be blemish-free, 00:56:03.83\00:56:06.66 because it was a holy environment. 00:56:06.70\00:56:08.96 But the question is, what's the significance 00:56:09.00\00:56:10.83 on the day of atonement? 00:56:10.87\00:56:12.33 There was two goats. 00:56:12.37\00:56:13.67 One goat is called the Lord's goat. 00:56:13.70\00:56:15.67 It doesn't say both goats were called the Lord's goats. 00:56:15.70\00:56:17.67 So right away, that means the other goat 00:56:17.71\00:56:19.21 is not the Lord's goat. 00:56:19.24\00:56:21.51 And one dies for sin. 00:56:21.54\00:56:24.98 That's the Lord's goat, which is a symbol of Jesus. 00:56:25.01\00:56:26.95 The other one does not die. 00:56:26.98\00:56:28.28 It's not sacrificed. 00:56:28.32\00:56:29.72 The sins of the people for the year are placed on that goat. 00:56:29.75\00:56:33.02 It's taken away from the sanctuary, and it's released in 00:56:33.05\00:56:36.52 the wilderness by a fit man. 00:56:36.56\00:56:38.99 That's been understood by many, and I'm one of those, that this 00:56:39.03\00:56:42.26 is a symbol how ultimately the guilt 00:56:42.30\00:56:45.03 and responsibility of all sin. 00:56:45.07\00:56:46.63 Jesus does not bear sins forever. 00:56:46.67\00:56:48.74 He says he's coming without sin the second time. 00:56:48.77\00:56:52.27 The ultimate responsibility is going to fall on the devil, 00:56:52.31\00:56:56.18 and he's often pictured even as a goat. 00:56:56.21\00:56:59.51 So we think this other goat, the scapegoat, is the devil, 00:56:59.55\00:57:04.79 and the Lord's goat is the Lord. 00:57:04.82\00:57:06.55 They're not both the Lord's goats. 00:57:06.59\00:57:08.49 Jëan: Okay, great. 00:57:08.52\00:57:09.82 Next question that we have, Donnelly's asking, 00:57:09.86\00:57:11.73 is it wrong to gamble? 00:57:11.76\00:57:14.66 Doug: Yes, the Bible says do not make haste to be rich. 00:57:14.73\00:57:17.43 And the idea of getting rich quick, 00:57:17.47\00:57:20.20 is something wrong with that? 00:57:20.24\00:57:22.64 Anything that's addictive is not good. 00:57:22.67\00:57:24.84 Some people are addicted to gambling, 00:57:24.87\00:57:26.54 and their whole lives implode. 00:57:26.57\00:57:29.08 I would never recommend gambling for a Christian. 00:57:29.11\00:57:31.41 Jëan: Okay, next question. 00:57:31.45\00:57:32.98 Why does the New Jerusalem need walls and gates? 00:57:33.01\00:57:36.42 Is there anything bad outside? 00:57:36.45\00:57:38.75 Doug: Well, at first it says the wicked attack the city of 00:57:38.79\00:57:41.26 God in Revelation 20; but no, the walls are not only 00:57:41.29\00:57:44.46 to keep things out. 00:57:44.49\00:57:45.93 The walls are sometimes a border. 00:57:45.96\00:57:47.86 It just shows within these precincts is going to be the 00:57:47.93\00:57:50.83 dwelling place of the redeemed. 00:57:50.87\00:57:52.47 So, it just represents a border through eternity. 00:57:52.50\00:57:54.60 Nothing to fear. 00:57:54.64\00:57:55.97 We'll be able to fly over the walls. 00:57:56.00\00:57:57.54 Jëan: Okay, next question that we have, 00:57:57.57\00:57:59.31 this one's interesting. 00:57:59.34\00:58:00.71 It says, "I've received different answers every time 00:58:00.74\00:58:02.54 I ask some questions. 00:58:02.58\00:58:04.28 If everyone's going by the Bible, why does one pastor 00:58:04.31\00:58:07.22 answer differently from another?" 00:58:07.25\00:58:10.02 Doug: Because some are right and some are wrong. 00:58:10.05\00:58:11.99 Hey friends, we are out of time. 00:58:12.02\00:58:13.72 Good point to end on. 00:58:13.76\00:58:15.09 We hope we're telling you the truth. 00:58:15.12\00:58:16.46 It's based on the Bible. 00:58:16.49\00:58:17.79 We'll study again together next week. 00:58:17.83\00:58:20.00 ¤¤¤ 00:58:20.03\00:58:21.80 announcer: Bible Answers Live, honest and accurate 00:58:21.83\00:58:24.53 answers to your Bible questions. 00:58:24.57\00:58:26.74 ¤¤¤ 00:58:26.77\00:58:28.74
