¤¤¤ 00:00:01.10\00:00:02.96 male announcer: It is the best-selling book in history. 00:00:03.10\00:00:05.47 No volume ever written has been more loved and quoted; 00:00:05.60\00:00:09.70 and its words, sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious, 00:00:09.74\00:00:13.41 should always be studied carefully. 00:00:13.44\00:00:16.34 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.38\00:00:19.68 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live," providing accurate 00:00:19.71\00:00:23.85 and practical answer to all your Bible questions. 00:00:23.89\00:00:28.36 This broadcast is a previously-recorded episode. 00:00:28.39\00:00:31.19 To receive any of the Bible resources mentioned in this 00:00:31.23\00:00:33.80 broadcast, call 800-835-6747. 00:00:33.83\00:00:38.37 Once again, that's 800-835-6747. 00:00:38.40\00:00:43.71 Now here's your host from Amazing Facts International, 00:00:43.74\00:00:47.88 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:47.91\00:00:49.84 Doug Batchelor: Hello, listening friends. 00:00:50.41\00:00:51.61 Would you like to hear an amazing fact? 00:00:51.65\00:00:54.22 In 1954, a little 4-year-old girl, Marina Chapman, was 00:00:54.25\00:00:59.32 abducted from her home in a remote mountain village 00:00:59.35\00:01:02.59 in South America. 00:01:02.62\00:01:03.99 Evidently, something went wrong with the kidnapping plans 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.70 and her captors abandoned her deep in the Colombian jungle. 00:01:06.73\00:01:11.03 Though often tormented by insects and loneliness, 00:01:11.07\00:01:14.00 Marina miraculously survived 5 years with the help 00:01:14.04\00:01:18.17 of a troop of capuchin monkeys. 00:01:18.21\00:01:20.84 There was plenty of water in the jungle, and the monkeys would 00:01:20.88\00:01:23.58 often leave her scraps of fruit and seeds until she learned 00:01:23.61\00:01:26.38 to find it for herself. 00:01:26.41\00:01:27.92 She eventually learned to climb trees and even catch small birds 00:01:27.95\00:01:31.55 with her bare hands. 00:01:31.59\00:01:32.95 When two hunters found her 5 years later, she'd forgotten 00:01:32.99\00:01:36.02 any human language and lost all inhibition. 00:01:36.06\00:01:38.19 Not remembering her birth name, she never found her family. 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.96 Marina was later adopted and became re-civilized, 00:01:42.00\00:01:45.10 moved to the UK where she married and had a family. 00:01:45.13\00:01:48.27 A few years ago, her story was produced in a book called 00:01:48.30\00:01:51.04 "The Girl with No Name." 00:01:51.07\00:01:53.31 Can you imagine that, Pastor Ross, living out there in the 00:01:53.34\00:01:57.05 jungle thinking you're an animal and then discovering you're 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.78 a human and it's like you find out you're a different creature? 00:01:59.81\00:02:03.72 Jean Ross: That's right. 00:02:03.75\00:02:05.52 Yeah, just sort of being raised by the monkeys, at least 00:02:05.55\00:02:08.12 following their example and finding what food you could and 00:02:08.16\00:02:10.73 then, "Wow, there's people like me out there." 00:02:10.76\00:02:13.76 Doug: Yeah, there's not enough time to tell the whole story, 00:02:13.80\00:02:15.96 but she said she spent enough time where she understood 00:02:16.00\00:02:19.73 the simple language of the monkeys. 00:02:19.77\00:02:22.04 I mean, you know, they didn't speak, but they had different 00:02:22.07\00:02:23.74 signals for different things and she could recognize them. 00:02:23.77\00:02:26.71 And when people doubted her story, some of the zoologists 00:02:26.74\00:02:30.35 who listened to her descriptions of the capuchin monkeys 00:02:30.38\00:02:32.95 and how they communicate they said she sounds like 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.38 she lived with monkeys. 00:02:35.42\00:02:37.15 She knew a lot about them, and-- anyway, she's still alive today. 00:02:37.19\00:02:40.79 But it's a fascinating story, and it makes me think 00:02:40.82\00:02:44.86 about--finding out you're a different creature reminds me of 00:02:44.89\00:02:48.46 that verse--now, King James says it a little differently there 00:02:48.50\00:02:50.93 in 2 Corinthians 5:17. 00:02:50.97\00:02:53.17 "If any man is in Christ, he is a new creature." 00:02:53.20\00:02:55.97 I think other versions say a new creation. 00:02:56.00\00:02:58.97 "Old things are passed away; behold, 00:02:59.01\00:03:01.38 all things are become new." 00:03:01.41\00:03:03.61 And, boy, she had a whole new life when she went from 00:03:03.65\00:03:08.12 the jungle to being adopted by a family and going from 00:03:08.15\00:03:11.12 the jungle to living in England. 00:03:11.15\00:03:14.36 I mean, talk about a radical transformation. 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.79 Jean: And of course, you know, the point you bring up 00:03:16.83\00:03:19.43 there, if we want to go from living on this earth filled with 00:03:19.46\00:03:22.93 sin and sorrow and suffering and death to the new earth where 00:03:22.96\00:03:26.23 there is peace and joy and eternal life it requires 00:03:26.27\00:03:28.90 a radical change. 00:03:28.94\00:03:30.57 Jesus said to Nicodemus, "You must be born again or you cannot 00:03:30.61\00:03:33.81 even see the kingdom of heaven." 00:03:33.84\00:03:35.68 So our free gift talks about that experience 00:03:35.71\00:03:37.95 of being born again. 00:03:37.98\00:03:39.41 It's called "Life in the Spirit," and this is free. 00:03:39.45\00:03:41.72 We'll send it to those who are listening. 00:03:41.75\00:03:43.25 If you're in North America, just call our number. 00:03:43.28\00:03:46.42 It's 800-835-6747. 00:03:46.45\00:03:49.79 You can ask for the free gift. 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.46 It's called "Life in the Spirit." 00:03:51.49\00:03:53.56 You can also dial #250 on your smartphone, say "Bible Answers 00:03:53.60\00:03:57.27 Live," and then also ask for the book "Life in the Spirit." 00:03:57.30\00:04:00.87 If you're outside of North America, and of course, 00:04:00.90\00:04:03.30 Pastor Doug, we have many people who are listening around the 00:04:03.34\00:04:05.64 world, just go to the website. 00:04:05.67\00:04:06.88 Just AmazingFacts.org. 00:04:06.91\00:04:08.71 We have a free library, and you'll be able to read the book 00:04:08.74\00:04:12.25 there as well. 00:04:12.28\00:04:13.65 Well, before we go to the phone lines, as we always 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.35 do we like to start the program with prayer. 00:04:15.38\00:04:17.39 So let's do that now. 00:04:17.42\00:04:18.99 Dear Father, we thank You for this time that we have to be 00:04:19.02\00:04:21.49 able to open up Your Word and study and, Father, it is 00:04:21.52\00:04:24.23 our desire that because of the program that's happening 00:04:24.26\00:04:26.29 this evening that lives will be transformed, 00:04:26.33\00:04:28.26 that people might be born again. 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.57 And so, Lord, we ask for Your Spirit to guide in these-- 00:04:30.60\00:04:33.17 in the time together, in the questions, and in the answers; 00:04:33.20\00:04:36.37 and we ask this in Jesus's name. 00:04:36.40\00:04:37.94 Amen. Doug: Amen. 00:04:37.97\00:04:40.34 Jean: Our first caller this evening is Dan 00:04:40.38\00:04:41.71 listening in Colorado. 00:04:41.74\00:04:43.11 Dan, you're on "Bible Answers Live." 00:04:43.14\00:04:45.08 Welcome. 00:04:45.11\00:04:46.61 Dan: Hey, pastors. Good evening to you. 00:04:46.65\00:04:49.02 Doug: Evening. 00:04:49.05\00:04:50.49 Dan: At such stances where maybe driving a car and we're 00:04:50.52\00:04:54.46 tempted to drive over this motorcycle officer or if we're 00:04:54.49\00:04:58.73 going to run our car off of a bridge or so, does this come 00:04:58.76\00:05:03.80 from a evil heart or the wicked one? 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.57 I get these thoughts all the time. 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.34 Of course, I do not act on them. 00:05:09.37\00:05:11.74 Do they show my evil heart? 00:05:11.77\00:05:15.21 Doug: Well, I do think that-- you know, all of us are fallen. 00:05:15.24\00:05:18.88 Also keep in mind our minds are kind of creative computers, and 00:05:18.91\00:05:23.35 I'd be embarrassed for anybody to see all the crazy thoughts 00:05:23.39\00:05:26.86 that goes through my mind. 00:05:26.89\00:05:28.59 You know, most of them we know how to subdue and we put them 00:05:28.62\00:05:31.59 out of our minds. 00:05:31.63\00:05:33.26 But because God gave us curiosity and He gave us 00:05:33.29\00:05:35.13 imagination, there's all kind of things that will swirl around 00:05:35.16\00:05:37.70 in your brain. 00:05:37.73\00:05:39.20 If there's any kind of thought that is evil or you're going to, 00:05:39.23\00:05:42.64 you know, harm somebody or it's sinful or impure; when we 00:05:42.67\00:05:45.64 recognize those thoughts are coming, 00:05:45.67\00:05:47.51 then we need to put them out. 00:05:47.54\00:05:49.21 Some of it is the temptation of the devil. 00:05:49.24\00:05:52.48 Some of it--James says we're drawn away by our own evil lust. 00:05:52.51\00:05:57.02 And so in the same way the devil was a free moral agent that was 00:05:57.05\00:06:00.72 able to choose to do something wrong, we also have that choice. 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.86 Not every wicked thing we do there's a devil behind it. 00:06:03.89\00:06:06.56 I think sometimes people just make those choices. 00:06:06.59\00:06:09.13 And of course the devil is there and his fallen angels to tempt 00:06:09.16\00:06:12.97 us, but through the power of Christ and the Spirit, you know, 00:06:13.00\00:06:16.60 we can put out those thoughts. 00:06:16.64\00:06:18.84 We can reject or resist those thoughts. 00:06:18.87\00:06:20.81 It's not a sin every time you're tempted with a crazy thought. 00:06:20.84\00:06:25.65 Even Jesus was tempted, the Bible says. 00:06:25.68\00:06:28.22 He was tempted to throw himself down from the temple. 00:06:28.25\00:06:31.09 Of course it was the devil tempting him, 00:06:31.12\00:06:32.99 but he rejected that. 00:06:33.02\00:06:34.36 And whenever he was tempted to do anything wrong, 00:06:34.39\00:06:36.32 he rejected it. 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.83 So we have that same privilege through the same power. 00:06:37.86\00:06:40.36 Jean: And, you know, I think the book that we're offering 00:06:40.40\00:06:42.60 for free called "Life in the Spirit" will talk about that, 00:06:42.63\00:06:44.47 how we can live that victorious Christian life. 00:06:44.50\00:06:46.53 And I think as Pastor Doug mentioned, 00:06:46.57\00:06:48.34 it's important to recognize not every crazy thought is sin 00:06:48.37\00:06:52.07 unless we dwell upon it. 00:06:52.11\00:06:53.64 Those times you just push that out of your mind and 00:06:53.68\00:06:55.94 say--redirect your thoughts to something wholesome. 00:06:55.98\00:06:58.81 If you'd like to receive the book, the number to call again 00:06:58.85\00:07:01.35 is 800-835-6747. 00:07:01.38\00:07:04.02 You can ask for the book. 00:07:04.05\00:07:05.25 It's called "Life in the Spirit." 00:07:05.29\00:07:06.42 Or dial #250 on your cell phone, say "Bible answers live," 00:07:06.45\00:07:10.83 and say "Life in the Spirit." 00:07:10.86\00:07:12.83 Thank you, Dan. 00:07:12.86\00:07:14.36 We've got Debbie listening in Canada. 00:07:14.40\00:07:16.16 Debbie, you're on the air. 00:07:16.20\00:07:17.83 Debbie: Hi, Pastor Ross and Pastor Doug. 00:07:17.87\00:07:19.80 How are you doing? 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.17 Doug: Great. Thank you for calling. 00:07:21.20\00:07:22.90 Debbie: Okay, I have a question. 00:07:22.94\00:07:24.24 First of all I have to say that I'm in the YouTube chat, and 00:07:24.27\00:07:27.64 last week there was a bunch of us chatting about abortion and 00:07:27.68\00:07:31.51 there was somebody in there that doesn't think she'll ever be 00:07:31.55\00:07:34.72 forgiven even when she asks for forgiveness for having 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.72 an abortion before she knew Jesus and I was just wondering 00:07:37.75\00:07:41.32 if you could give us some insight on that, please. 00:07:41.36\00:07:44.53 Doug: Yeah, the Bible is pretty clear that the only sin that 00:07:44.56\00:07:48.00 cannot be forgiven is what you call the unpardonable sin. 00:07:48.03\00:07:50.97 Some have thought; well, that must be abortion or infanticide, 00:07:51.00\00:07:54.17 but that's not true. 00:07:54.20\00:07:56.04 God will even forgive that. 00:07:56.07\00:07:57.71 You know, because of the sin of David his baby was lost, 00:07:57.74\00:08:01.31 and Manasseh offered his children. 00:08:01.34\00:08:04.15 They passed through the fire he was--and God forgave him. 00:08:04.18\00:08:07.58 And so of course if--any sin that we're willing to repent of 00:08:07.62\00:08:14.52 and forsake we will be forgiven. 00:08:14.56\00:08:17.06 The Bible says all manner of sin and blasphemy 00:08:17.09\00:08:20.53 will be forgiven unto man. 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.50 And so God is extremely merciful, and we're--if we're 00:08:22.53\00:08:25.90 genuinely sorry and we repent He will forgive. 00:08:25.93\00:08:28.94 And I pray that that young lady, if she's listening now, 00:08:28.97\00:08:32.37 will just believe that Jesus is a better Savior than she is 00:08:32.41\00:08:36.44 a sinner and He can save to the uttermost the promises. 00:08:36.48\00:08:40.68 Jean: And of course 1 John chapter 1, verse 9 says, 00:08:40.72\00:08:42.75 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us, 00:08:42.78\00:08:45.89 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 00:08:45.92\00:08:48.52 There is no condition associated with that but that we're willing 00:08:48.56\00:08:51.66 to confess and forsake and God is able to forgive. 00:08:51.69\00:08:55.10 So we take courage from those promises. 00:08:55.13\00:08:57.43 Thank you, Debbie. 00:08:57.47\00:08:59.33 We've got Gary listening in Illinois. 00:08:59.37\00:09:00.87 Gary, welcome to the program. 00:09:00.90\00:09:02.74 Gary: Thank you. 00:09:02.77\00:09:04.24 In Luke 22, verse 20 it says, "This cup is the New Covenant 00:09:04.27\00:09:08.78 in My blood, which was shed for you." 00:09:08.81\00:09:12.08 Now, again, shedding of blood is talked about in Romans 3:25. 00:09:12.11\00:09:18.09 "Whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood." 00:09:18.12\00:09:23.53 Okay, so I looked up that word and it means gift offering 00:09:23.56\00:09:27.46 to remove wrath of God. 00:09:27.50\00:09:29.76 So is the New Covenant the removal of wrath of God? 00:09:29.80\00:09:34.94 Doug: No--well, the word covenant 00:09:34.97\00:09:37.71 very simply means agreement. 00:09:37.74\00:09:40.24 Every time you buy a house or a car or even get married, 00:09:40.28\00:09:44.25 it's a covenant. 00:09:44.28\00:09:45.75 And so the old covenant was ratified by the blood. 00:09:45.78\00:09:51.69 It was symbolic. 00:09:51.72\00:09:53.15 It was ratified by the blood of goats and lambs. 00:09:53.19\00:09:56.66 It was the law of God written in the stone tablets where 00:09:56.69\00:10:01.50 the people made a promise. 00:10:01.53\00:10:03.00 They said, "All the Lord has said we will do." 00:10:03.03\00:10:04.60 It was an agreement. 00:10:04.63\00:10:06.20 God said, "Keep these commandments. 00:10:06.23\00:10:07.60 I'll bless and protect you." 00:10:07.64\00:10:08.87 They said, "All the Lord has said we'll do." 00:10:08.90\00:10:10.31 That was the agreement. 00:10:10.34\00:10:11.84 It was ratified with a sacrifice. 00:10:11.87\00:10:13.61 The New Covenant is the same law written now in our hearts 00:10:13.64\00:10:16.21 instead of stone ratified by the blood of Christ. 00:10:16.24\00:10:19.18 And so the propitiation, the intercession for our sins is 00:10:19.21\00:10:24.45 made by the blood of Jesus, but the covenant itself is the 00:10:24.49\00:10:28.32 agreement that God will save us because of the blood of Christ. 00:10:28.36\00:10:32.69 And He puts a new heart in us that causes us to walk 00:10:32.73\00:10:35.93 in His ways and keep His laws. 00:10:35.96\00:10:37.37 Gary: Thank you. Doug: All right. 00:10:37.40\00:10:39.27 And we--you know, we've got that great study guide talking about 00:10:39.30\00:10:42.40 the law where it talks about--well, 00:10:42.44\00:10:45.04 it's about grace and the law. 00:10:45.07\00:10:47.58 I can't remember the name of it right now, but-- 00:10:47.61\00:10:49.98 Jean: "Does God's Grace Blot out the Law?" 00:10:50.01\00:10:52.08 Doug: That's it. Yeah. 00:10:52.11\00:10:53.55 That talks about the covenants right there. 00:10:53.58\00:10:54.85 That's the one. Thank you. 00:10:54.88\00:10:56.52 Jean: That's right, the number to call is 800-835-6747. 00:10:56.55\00:10:58.32 You can ask for the book. 00:10:58.35\00:10:59.95 It's called "Does God's Grace Blot out the Law?" 00:11:00.06\00:11:01.79 And we'll send it to you, Gary, or anyone listening 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.69 in the US or in Canada. 00:11:03.73\00:11:05.39 Dial #250 on your cell phone and say "Bible answers live" 00:11:05.43\00:11:09.33 and ask for it. 00:11:09.36\00:11:10.73 We'll get in the mail. 00:11:10.77\00:11:12.43 Junith is listening right across the border in Nevada. 00:11:12.47\00:11:14.54 Junith, welcome to the program. 00:11:14.57\00:11:17.47 Junith: Blessed evening to both of you. 00:11:17.51\00:11:20.24 My question is about the tree of life. 00:11:20.28\00:11:24.38 As we all know, we're going to worship the Lord of the Sabbath 00:11:24.41\00:11:29.92 Jesus on the Sabbath in Isaiah 66:22 to 23. 00:11:29.95\00:11:38.39 My focus is the tree of life. 00:11:38.43\00:11:41.80 Shall we have potluck in the tree of life or can we access 00:11:41.83\00:11:45.10 the tree of life any time we want to because it's right 00:11:45.13\00:11:49.07 nearby the throne of God? 00:11:49.10\00:11:51.27 So maybe we cannot access because we need some reverence 00:11:51.31\00:11:55.41 around the throne of God, 00:11:55.44\00:11:58.18 that all the time that we can't access it? 00:11:58.21\00:12:00.72 Doug: Yes, well, 00:12:00.75\00:12:01.88 keep in mind the tree of life is going to be replaced. 00:12:01.92\00:12:05.59 The Garden of Eden that God planted as near as we can tell, 00:12:05.62\00:12:10.13 in the same way that New Jerusalem is coming down from 00:12:10.16\00:12:13.09 heaven, before the flood it seems that God caught the garden 00:12:13.13\00:12:16.43 up and--'cause that garden is going to be in the new earth. 00:12:16.46\00:12:20.87 Adam had free--as far as we can tell he had free unlimited 00:12:20.90\00:12:24.07 access to the tree, and that is going to be restored. 00:12:24.11\00:12:27.38 Everything is going to be restored not just the same 00:12:27.41\00:12:30.28 but even better. 00:12:30.31\00:12:31.78 So I doubt that God is going to ration how often you can eat 00:12:31.81\00:12:34.12 from the tree. 00:12:34.15\00:12:35.35 But in the same way in this life, you know, you don't want 00:12:35.38\00:12:37.75 to eat ice cream six times a day, I think people are going to 00:12:37.79\00:12:40.59 have self-control and they're not going to eat it more than 00:12:40.62\00:12:42.72 they need to. 00:12:42.76\00:12:44.06 Jean: And, of course, the Bible tells us that the fruit of 00:12:44.09\00:12:46.43 the tree is somewhat unique, a different kind of fruit every 00:12:46.46\00:12:49.96 month on the tree of life. 00:12:50.00\00:12:51.70 So you can get your fill of June's fruit, whatever they 00:12:51.73\00:12:55.14 might be, but then July; well, there's a different kind of 00:12:55.17\00:12:57.67 fruit on the tree, yeah. 00:12:57.71\00:12:59.64 Maybe you got your favorite type of fruit that comes around 00:12:59.67\00:13:02.24 once a year. 00:13:02.28\00:13:03.41 Who knows? But of course; yes, 00:13:03.45\00:13:05.45 it's a symbol of eternal life that we have. 00:13:05.48\00:13:07.35 So something special. 00:13:07.38\00:13:09.02 Mark is listening in Michigan. Mark, welcome to the program. 00:13:09.05\00:13:11.69 Mark: Good evening, pastors. 00:13:11.72\00:13:14.76 In Joshua 6, it tells the story 00:13:14.79\00:13:18.13 of Israel's victory over Jericho. 00:13:18.16\00:13:20.03 We recently heard an evangelist say that the walls came down 00:13:20.06\00:13:23.80 on the Sabbath. 00:13:23.83\00:13:25.27 It's challenging to think God scheduled the actual slaughter 00:13:25.30\00:13:28.64 on the Sabbath. 00:13:28.67\00:13:29.80 So is there any evidence that the 7-day march began on 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.71 a Sunday the first day or on a different day of the week? 00:13:32.74\00:13:36.31 Doug: Yeah, well, 00:13:36.34\00:13:37.81 we don't know what day it began, but I'm quite certain 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.38 that God did not orchestrate the walls of Jericho so that on 00:13:40.42\00:13:44.22 the Sabbath day they did the most work. 00:13:44.25\00:13:47.06 When it talks about they march around the city one time 00:13:47.09\00:13:50.36 for 6 days, that means sequence. 00:13:50.39\00:13:53.26 It doesn't mean day of the week. 00:13:53.29\00:13:55.06 The first day of marching, you know, they blew the trumpets and 00:13:55.10\00:13:57.50 they marched around the city. 00:13:57.53\00:13:58.87 Second day, third day--one of those days may have been the 00:13:58.90\00:14:01.17 Sabbath, but He didn't ask them to do anything other than--you 00:14:01.20\00:14:05.21 know, I tease folks and say they were just taking a nature walk 00:14:05.24\00:14:08.84 and special music with the trumpets. 00:14:08.88\00:14:10.28 That's all that happened. 00:14:10.31\00:14:11.65 So that may have happened on the Sabbath day, but I think the day 00:14:11.68\00:14:14.08 that they actually attacked the city it may have been 00:14:14.12\00:14:16.69 a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. 00:14:16.72\00:14:17.89 We don't know. 00:14:17.92\00:14:19.12 But I doubt it was the Sabbath day. 00:14:19.15\00:14:20.72 It's, you know, no more than Israel today would launch 00:14:20.76\00:14:23.53 a battle on the Sabbath day. 00:14:23.56\00:14:25.03 Jean: And, you know, one of the verse that comes to mind 00:14:25.06\00:14:26.63 Jesus said--talking about the destruction of Jerusalem that 00:14:26.66\00:14:29.53 occurred in 70 AD, Christ talking to his followers said, 00:14:29.56\00:14:32.87 "Pray that your flight be not in winter 00:14:32.90\00:14:34.40 neither on the Sabbath day." 00:14:34.44\00:14:36.17 Well, if he's talking about them fleeing for their life and he 00:14:36.20\00:14:39.07 says pray that you don't have to do it on the Sabbath; 00:14:39.11\00:14:41.01 well, it only makes sense then that the conquering of Jericho 00:14:41.04\00:14:45.88 with all the distraction won't be on the Sabbath. 00:14:45.91\00:14:48.22 Doug: Why would God command that if He would tell them to 00:14:48.25\00:14:50.15 pray in Matthew 24? 00:14:50.19\00:14:51.89 That's right. 00:14:51.92\00:14:53.46 Jean: All right, well, thank you, Mark, appreciate that. 00:14:53.49\00:14:54.92 We have Liam listening from Ohio. 00:14:54.96\00:14:58.76 Liam, welcome to the program. 00:14:58.79\00:15:01.00 Liam: All right. Thanks for taking my call. 00:15:01.03\00:15:03.67 My question is regarding John 6. 00:15:03.70\00:15:06.97 The way that I read it, it seems like Jesus is claiming that his 00:15:07.00\00:15:13.81 body blood, soul, and divinity are part of the bread 00:15:13.84\00:15:20.82 and wine of communion. 00:15:20.85\00:15:22.52 And I'm really having a hard time seeing it any other way, 00:15:22.55\00:15:26.25 but I know that plenty of Christians see it as just a 00:15:26.29\00:15:28.96 symbol or--our Lutheran friends see it as consubstantiation, 00:15:28.99\00:15:34.10 and I was hoping you could walk me through the way 00:15:34.13\00:15:36.03 that you see it-- 00:15:36.06\00:15:37.30 Doug: Now, which verses are you looking at? 00:15:37.33\00:15:38.90 Liam: I mean, kind of the whole thing. 00:15:38.93\00:15:40.47 He feeds the 5,000 and the Psalm 23 enactment. 00:15:40.50\00:15:43.67 Doug: Says, "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, 00:15:43.71\00:15:46.07 you have no life in you." 00:15:46.11\00:15:48.11 Yeah, well, now keep in mind at the Last Supper--so the big 00:15:48.14\00:15:51.51 question, and this was a big debate between Protestants 00:15:51.55\00:15:54.55 and Catholics during the reformation, is that is the 00:15:54.58\00:15:58.52 priest actually converting the emblems of the bread and the 00:15:58.55\00:16:03.26 grape juice into the literal body and blood of Jesus. 00:16:03.29\00:16:07.56 And Luther, who at one time was a Catholic priest, and 00:16:07.60\00:16:12.00 Calvin--both Catholic priests, they said, "No, it's a symbol." 00:16:12.03\00:16:14.30 And their argument was when Jesus had the last supper and 00:16:14.34\00:16:17.71 he's sitting there with his disciples and he's all intact 00:16:17.74\00:16:20.94 and he points to the bread and he says, "This is my body and 00:16:20.98\00:16:24.28 this is my blood," he wasn't asking them to participate in 00:16:24.31\00:16:29.48 some kind of cannibalism because for one thing that's forbidden 00:16:29.52\00:16:32.75 in the Bible. 00:16:32.79\00:16:34.49 You know, you're not supposed to eat unclean food or blood. 00:16:34.52\00:16:39.06 In fact, one of the first commandments in the Bible is do 00:16:39.09\00:16:41.16 not eat blood. 00:16:41.20\00:16:42.86 So yeah, I think it's clearly a symbol of the sacrifice that 00:16:42.90\00:16:48.37 Jesus was making. 00:16:48.40\00:16:49.97 And there's no need for the Lord to actually biologically 00:16:50.01\00:16:53.74 transfer, make that grape juice into blood. 00:16:53.78\00:16:57.35 You know, I think I've been to communion services and I used to 00:16:57.38\00:17:00.95 attend mass--Catholic mass at military school and the bread 00:17:00.98\00:17:05.72 was not human flesh. 00:17:05.75\00:17:07.46 It was a wafer. 00:17:07.49\00:17:09.16 And when the priest drinks the grape juice, it's not 00:17:09.19\00:17:11.39 blood--literal blood. 00:17:11.43\00:17:13.19 So I think it's a pretty strong argument that 00:17:13.23\00:17:15.10 it's a symbol for the life. 00:17:15.13\00:17:17.50 Now, you look in the Old Testament and you've got 00:17:17.53\00:17:19.97 the story of Melchizedek, who is a type of Christ, and he brings 00:17:20.00\00:17:24.54 out to Abraham bread and wine and--that nourish the army. 00:17:24.57\00:17:30.68 Well, Christ is like Melchizedek, tells us in 00:17:30.71\00:17:33.92 the Book of Hebrews, and he nourishes us with his life 00:17:33.95\00:17:37.32 and the gospel. 00:17:37.35\00:17:38.72 So yeah, I think it's a symbol. 00:17:38.75\00:17:40.89 Jean: Yeah, just to add to that a little bit more, you know, 00:17:40.92\00:17:43.29 if you look at the actual passage itself, 00:17:43.32\00:17:44.83 I think it gives us a clue. 00:17:44.86\00:17:46.26 Jesus said, "Most assuredly--" This is verse 53. 00:17:46.29\00:17:48.70 "Most assuredly, I say unto you, unless you eat the flesh of the 00:17:48.73\00:17:50.87 son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." 00:17:50.90\00:17:53.20 Well, even the disciples wondered about this. 00:17:53.23\00:17:55.90 And there were many that were in the crowd, it says, that they 00:17:55.94\00:17:58.01 were offended and they walked no longer with him, 00:17:58.04\00:18:00.58 and Jesus turned to his disciples and he said, 00:18:00.61\00:18:02.71 "Are you also going to forsake me?" 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.28 And they said, "Well, Lord, where are we going to go? 00:18:04.31\00:18:06.45 You have the words of life." 00:18:06.48\00:18:07.82 But then they respond in verse 60. 00:18:07.85\00:18:09.32 It says they said, "This is a hard saying. 00:18:09.35\00:18:12.05 Who can understand it?" 00:18:12.09\00:18:13.52 So even them were --they were puzzled. 00:18:13.56\00:18:15.09 "What do you mean, Jesus, eat your flesh 00:18:15.12\00:18:16.83 and drink your blood?" 00:18:16.86\00:18:18.06 Then Christ explains this. 00:18:18.09\00:18:19.79 Verse 63 he says, "It is the Spirit that gives life; 00:18:19.83\00:18:22.86 the flesh profits nothing. 00:18:22.90\00:18:25.00 The words that I speak unto you, 00:18:25.03\00:18:26.97 they are spirit and they are life." 00:18:27.00\00:18:28.80 To eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ 00:18:28.84\00:18:31.57 is to receive his Word. 00:18:31.61\00:18:33.41 That's what Jesus said. 00:18:33.44\00:18:34.94 So he's clearly talking about symbols. 00:18:34.98\00:18:36.98 And just as we need physical food to give us physical 00:18:37.01\00:18:39.41 strength, we need to receive His Word and His Spirit 00:18:39.45\00:18:42.68 in order for us to have spiritual strength. 00:18:42.72\00:18:44.62 Doug: Yeah. 00:18:44.65\00:18:46.72 And then when Jesus says in Matthew chapter 12 and-- 00:18:46.76\00:18:50.99 I think this still is verse 1. 00:18:51.03\00:18:54.76 He says, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees." 00:18:54.83\00:18:57.60 And the disciples thought, "Oh, we forgot to bring lunch." 00:18:57.63\00:19:00.27 And Jesus says, "No, no, not literal leaven." 00:19:00.30\00:19:02.97 He said, "I'm talking in spiritual terms. 00:19:03.00\00:19:04.67 This is talking about the teaching of the Pharisee." 00:19:04.71\00:19:07.08 So Jesus often spot--spoken symbols and the disciples 00:19:07.11\00:19:09.74 thought, "Drink your blood and eat your flesh?" 00:19:09.78\00:19:12.95 And he said, "No, no. It's a symbol." 00:19:12.98\00:19:14.75 Jean: Great question, though. Thank you, Liam. 00:19:14.78\00:19:16.95 We've got Joe listening in Arizona. 00:19:16.99\00:19:18.79 Joe, welcome to the program. 00:19:18.82\00:19:20.29 Joe: Hey, guys. How are you tonight? 00:19:20.32\00:19:22.76 Doug: Doing great. Joe: All right. 00:19:22.79\00:19:25.53 Well, I'm going to try to keep this really simple. 00:19:25.56\00:19:27.46 First off, is there an email that can be sent 'cause I have a 00:19:27.50\00:19:32.00 question but it's kind of a big question and has lots of parts 00:19:32.03\00:19:35.10 to it and I don't want to take up all the time on your show? 00:19:35.14\00:19:37.97 Doug: We do have an email. 00:19:38.01\00:19:39.54 Jean: Yeah, let me give it to you. 00:19:39.57\00:19:41.48 Yeah, it's simple. 00:19:41.51\00:19:42.71 It's just BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:19:42.74\00:19:45.51 That's BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:19:45.55\00:19:49.95 Joe: All right. Thank you. 00:19:49.98\00:19:52.02 So my question is I was raised the same way that you guys, I 00:19:52.05\00:19:57.73 guess, preach; but I've recently been listening to somebody I 00:19:57.76\00:20:03.47 found on YouTube and his whole ministry is that we're the 00:20:03.50\00:20:09.40 angels from heaven, and it's kind of ironic that you said in 00:20:09.44\00:20:15.44 your opening about we're fallen because that's what he says. 00:20:15.48\00:20:18.78 And so my question is like there's--the only problem I'm 00:20:18.81\00:20:24.99 finding with it is--with the fallen angels, the demons that 00:20:25.02\00:20:29.46 are talked about in the Bible, like when there was a demoniac 00:20:29.49\00:20:32.63 and he threw the demons out of the body into the pigs. 00:20:32.66\00:20:36.73 So you have all of these demons running around. 00:20:36.77\00:20:39.23 So I'm assuming that they had bodies to begin with. 00:20:39.27\00:20:43.10 And just like Lucifer goes in and out of, you know, people, 00:20:43.14\00:20:46.88 where are their bodies and--I mean, who are they? 00:20:46.91\00:20:51.31 Is it just all the fallen angels and all--they can go on 00:20:51.35\00:20:53.52 anybody's bodies at any time? 00:20:53.55\00:20:55.85 Doug: Yeah, well, first of all, for our friends listening, the 00:20:55.88\00:20:58.85 Bible tells us that, you know, sin began with Lucifer, 00:20:58.89\00:21:01.99 a great angel of God who rebelled. 00:21:02.02\00:21:04.63 He was cast out of heaven. 00:21:04.66\00:21:06.33 He persuaded one-third of the other angels, his former 00:21:06.36\00:21:10.50 partners you might say, to follow him and they've come 00:21:10.53\00:21:15.34 to the earth. 00:21:15.37\00:21:17.01 Now, the Bible says angels are spiritual beings. 00:21:17.04\00:21:18.64 They don't have bodies like we do. 00:21:18.67\00:21:20.64 Paul said we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. 00:21:20.68\00:21:23.58 So angels are not flesh and blood. 00:21:23.61\00:21:25.58 They've got some kind of a spiritual body. 00:21:25.61\00:21:27.38 It's different and sort of a mystery for us, but they-- 00:21:27.42\00:21:30.02 you know, they can appear. 00:21:30.05\00:21:32.12 Can the fallen angels possess whoever they want? 00:21:32.15\00:21:34.66 No. 00:21:34.69\00:21:36.62 That's the devil's complaint to God. 00:21:36.66\00:21:38.59 He said, "You set a hedge about Job." 00:21:38.63\00:21:40.43 And so the Lord limits what the devil can do to harm us, but 00:21:40.46\00:21:43.83 some people open themselves up to the devil and--you know, they 00:21:43.87\00:21:48.54 can actually get to the point where they're demon-possessed, 00:21:48.57\00:21:50.87 and it's why Jesus cast out devils and he sent the disciples 00:21:50.91\00:21:54.04 forward saying, "You can cast them out." 00:21:54.08\00:21:55.68 Now, on the other question you mentioned, the Bible is pretty 00:21:55.71\00:21:58.71 clear people are not angels. 00:21:58.75\00:22:01.55 They were separate creatures. 00:22:01.58\00:22:03.35 People are not fallen angels. 00:22:03.39\00:22:04.92 I think that's what our Mormons friends teaches, that we come 00:22:04.95\00:22:08.89 down to earth and get bodies. 00:22:08.92\00:22:10.13 It's almost like a form of reincarnation. 00:22:10.16\00:22:12.23 The Bible doesn't teach that. 00:22:12.26\00:22:13.80 Our lives began when we first became--when we're born 00:22:13.83\00:22:17.57 and we became conscious of our existence, and our eternity 00:22:17.60\00:22:20.47 depends on what we do with the gospel and this life. 00:22:20.50\00:22:24.41 So do you want to add anything to that? 00:22:24.44\00:22:27.78 Jean: Yeah, I thought 00:22:27.81\00:22:29.31 maybe just the--we do have a study guide called 00:22:29.34\00:22:30.88 "Did God Create the Devil?" 00:22:30.91\00:22:32.61 It talks about the fall of Lucifer. 00:22:32.65\00:22:34.22 The Bible says, speaking of the good angels, 00:22:34.25\00:22:35.72 they're our ministering spirits. 00:22:35.75\00:22:37.22 And as Doug said, we don't wrestle against flesh and blood. 00:22:37.25\00:22:39.82 So there is a dimension of this that we don't fully understand, 00:22:39.85\00:22:42.46 but they are very real. 00:22:42.49\00:22:44.99 If you'd like to receive the study guide called 00:22:45.03\00:22:47.76 "Did God Create the Devil?" 00:22:47.76\00:22:49.06 we'll be happy to send that to anyone who calls and ask. 00:22:49.10\00:22:51.17 The number for that is 800-835-6747 or just dial #250 00:22:51.20\00:22:55.60 on your cell phone, say "Did God create a devil?" 00:22:55.64\00:22:59.44 And that's the name of the study guide. 00:22:59.47\00:23:01.14 We'll send it to you. 00:23:01.18\00:23:02.64 Eron is listening from New York. Eron, you're on the air. 00:23:02.68\00:23:05.35 Eron: Hi. Good evening. 00:23:05.38\00:23:07.58 Multiple places in the Bible says we must confess our sins to 00:23:07.62\00:23:12.42 God because only He can cleanse us from our sins as He forgives 00:23:12.45\00:23:16.29 us, but it says in James chapter 5, verse 16 that we should 00:23:16.32\00:23:21.16 confess our faults or trespasses to one another. 00:23:21.20\00:23:24.53 Can you tell me the meaning behind that verse? 00:23:24.57\00:23:28.30 Doug: Sure, and he says part of the reason for doing that is 00:23:28.34\00:23:32.07 that we might pray for one another that we can be healed. 00:23:32.11\00:23:34.04 Can--and if you look in like the New King James Version it 00:23:34.08\00:23:38.41 doesn't say confess your sins, it says confess your trespasses. 00:23:38.45\00:23:41.52 There are different words for sin and iniquity. 00:23:41.55\00:23:44.95 And I think that it's appropriate for believers to 00:23:44.99\00:23:48.49 share with their friends, you know, where I'm struggling 00:23:48.52\00:23:52.99 and in confidence you can tell a person, you know, 00:23:53.03\00:23:56.03 "Please pray for me. 00:23:56.06\00:23:57.23 I struggle with gossip," or whatever it is. 00:23:57.27\00:23:59.37 You're not required to do that for forgiveness, you 00:23:59.40\00:24:02.00 just--sometimes we'll share with friends that we can trust areas 00:24:02.04\00:24:05.34 in our lives where we need prayer, and we invite them 00:24:05.37\00:24:07.98 to intercede and pray for us. 00:24:08.01\00:24:09.84 But this is not an admonition to confess sin. 00:24:09.88\00:24:14.32 You're not required to confess sin to other people. 00:24:14.35\00:24:16.38 Jean: You know, one preacher put it this way. 00:24:16.42\00:24:17.79 He said public sins need to be confessed publicly, private sins 00:24:17.82\00:24:21.19 you need to confess privately, and then individual-- 00:24:21.22\00:24:24.39 if you sinned against an individual you need to go 00:24:24.43\00:24:26.93 to them first and you need to try and make things right. 00:24:26.96\00:24:29.06 So you've got to pray for wisdom. 00:24:29.10\00:24:30.67 You know, sometimes things happen in people's lives 00:24:30.70\00:24:33.47 and it's not for everyone else to know about. 00:24:33.50\00:24:36.44 They need to reconcile with their friend or work things out 00:24:36.47\00:24:39.67 and not make a big public scene of it, but there are times where 00:24:39.71\00:24:43.71 if people are aware of something that was done publicly you need 00:24:43.75\00:24:47.32 to confess that. 00:24:47.35\00:24:48.92 All right, hopefully that helps, Eron, thank you. 00:24:48.95\00:24:51.25 We do have a book talking about forgiveness. 00:24:51.29\00:24:53.42 And I'm trying to think of the name, Pastor Doug. 00:24:53.46\00:24:55.69 I think you wrote the book. 00:24:55.72\00:24:57.19 Doug: Yeah, it's--yeah, it's a new-- 00:24:57.23\00:24:58.66 "The Gift of Forgiveness." 00:24:58.69\00:25:00.16 Jean: "The Gift of Forgiveness," yes. 00:25:00.20\00:25:01.73 The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:25:01.76\00:25:04.90 We'll be happy to send that to anyone who calls and ask. 00:25:04.93\00:25:06.67 Just dial #250. 00:25:06.70\00:25:08.94 And, Pastor Doug, you've got a sermon, I always enjoy this one, 00:25:08.97\00:25:12.14 on forgiveness, and I think it's available on-- 00:25:12.17\00:25:14.51 Doug: Seventy times seven. 00:25:14.54\00:25:15.98 Jean: That's what it's called, "Seventy Times Seven." 00:25:16.01\00:25:17.41 So anyone wanting to learn more about that, just take a look 00:25:17.45\00:25:20.38 at that sermon and you will be blessed. 00:25:20.42\00:25:22.72 We're going to Eron in--I think we were just with Eron, 00:25:22.75\00:25:26.62 weren't we? 00:25:26.65\00:25:28.16 Christopher in California. 00:25:28.19\00:25:29.66 Christopher, welcome to the program. 00:25:29.69\00:25:31.03 Christopher: Hello. 00:25:31.06\00:25:32.46 Jean: We have about 1 1/2 minute before the break. 00:25:32.49\00:25:34.46 Christopher: Okay, my question is, would it be a sin for me to 00:25:34.50\00:25:38.70 buy from Apple and Microsoft or any company that supports 00:25:38.73\00:25:42.17 abortion and LGBTQ rights? 00:25:42.20\00:25:45.94 Doug: All right. Well, that's a great question. 00:25:45.97\00:25:50.15 Too bad we only have 30 seconds to answer it, 00:25:50.18\00:25:52.95 but let me just explain it this way. 00:25:52.98\00:25:55.05 You know, there are--some companies are so big and there 00:25:55.08\00:26:01.79 are banks that--like when you put your money in a bank, 00:26:01.82\00:26:04.63 probably most major banks probably have investments and 00:26:04.66\00:26:09.53 support some of these companies. 00:26:09.56\00:26:11.70 And you're going to go crazy trying to buy food in 00:26:11.73\00:26:15.14 a supermarket that doesn't also sell alcohol and cigarettes. 00:26:15.17\00:26:18.91 So are you supporting the alcohol and cigarettes when you 00:26:18.94\00:26:21.08 buy your avocados at a certain market? 00:26:21.11\00:26:23.24 At some point you just got to say, "Look, 00:26:23.28\00:26:25.81 if I don't have peace about it," you don't do it. 00:26:25.85\00:26:28.08 And--but, you know, some of these are big conglomerates. 00:26:28.12\00:26:31.55 And you could actually say, "I'm not going to do or buy anything 00:26:31.59\00:26:35.16 that's used by Apple or Google and it's going 00:26:35.19\00:26:39.76 to sort of eliminate everything." 00:26:39.79\00:26:41.43 So, you know, you have to be careful and wise in how you make 00:26:41.46\00:26:47.14 those decisions or you could actually be--end up on an island 00:26:47.17\00:26:49.70 or in a cave somewhere. 00:26:49.74\00:26:51.04 Hey, friends, don't go away. 00:26:51.07\00:26:52.21 We're coming back with more Bible questions 00:26:52.24\00:26:53.68 in just a minute, and the best is yet to come. 00:26:53.71\00:26:55.88 Tell your friends to tune in. 00:26:55.91\00:26:57.11 We'll be right back. 00:26:57.15\00:26:59.21 announcer: Stay tuned. 00:27:01.68\00:27:03.08 "Bible Answers Live will return shortly. 00:27:03.12\00:27:05.72 Doug: Hi, friends. Doug: Evening. 00:31:16.40\00:31:18.77 Anna: So I don't have the verses like I usually do, 00:31:18.81\00:31:24.08 but in the beginning God said that it was good for man 00:31:24.11\00:31:30.82 to not be alone. 00:31:30.85\00:31:34.32 But then I think in Matthew Jesus says that if you can 00:31:34.36\00:31:39.76 keep from it, then do that. 00:31:39.79\00:31:44.23 So that's my question. 00:31:44.27\00:31:46.27 Doug: Yeah, good question. 00:31:46.30\00:31:48.17 So, you know, God originally He said--when He made man 00:31:48.20\00:31:52.14 He says it's not good for man to be alone. 00:31:52.17\00:31:53.84 Now, that was just a--I think that's an umbrella truth that 00:31:53.88\00:31:58.58 God made man to be a social creature. 00:31:58.61\00:32:01.18 Man is made for relationship. 00:32:01.22\00:32:03.22 And of course, He made woman 'cause the ultimate in 00:32:03.25\00:32:06.12 that relationship is a man and a woman and a family. 00:32:06.15\00:32:09.46 But I think it's good that people aren't alone, just 00:32:09.49\00:32:12.43 even--He wants us to have friends and be social, 00:32:12.46\00:32:14.36 have accountability. 00:32:14.36\00:32:15.96 Jesus sent people out two by two and it was, you know, two men. 00:32:16.00\00:32:19.20 So it was important for them to have relationship as well. 00:32:19.23\00:32:22.37 But Paul--now, Jesus never said it's wrong to marry. 00:32:22.40\00:32:25.31 Jesus said that in the last days woe to those that are with child 00:32:25.34\00:32:28.91 and nursing during the great time of trouble, 00:32:28.94\00:32:32.05 and Paul alludes to that. 00:32:32.08\00:32:33.95 There was a great time of persecution during Paul's time, 00:32:33.98\00:32:36.62 and he says in those cases it might be better not to marry. 00:32:36.65\00:32:39.72 Do you have that, Pastor Ross? 00:32:39.75\00:32:41.29 Jean: Yeah, you'll find in 1 Corinthians chapter 7, verse 6 00:32:41.32\00:32:43.53 where, again, the context there is this persecution coming 00:32:43.56\00:32:46.70 upon the Christ--on the church. 00:32:46.73\00:32:48.93 He says, "For I wish that all men even--were even as myself, 00:32:48.96\00:32:52.37 but each one has his own gift from God, 00:32:52.40\00:32:54.64 one in this manner and another in that. 00:32:54.67\00:32:56.54 But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: it is good for 00:32:56.57\00:32:59.41 them if they remain even as I am; but if they cannot exercise 00:32:59.44\00:33:03.08 self-control, let them marry. 00:33:03.11\00:33:05.21 For it is better to marry than to burn with passion." 00:33:05.25\00:33:07.75 So, you know, at a time of severe persecution, of course 00:33:07.78\00:33:11.12 this wasn't just in the time of Jesus or, you know, 70 AD 00:33:11.15\00:33:14.69 when Jerusalem was destroyed in 1st century. 00:33:14.72\00:33:17.79 But there were times of persecution even during the dark 00:33:17.83\00:33:20.06 ages where it was difficult to support a family. 00:33:20.10\00:33:22.86 People were running or moving from place to place. 00:33:22.90\00:33:24.90 When it came to mission activity, sometimes it was 00:33:24.93\00:33:27.50 easier for missionaries to enter into difficult areas 00:33:27.54\00:33:30.97 and to go maybe unmarried. 00:33:31.01\00:33:34.08 But this is not a general statement 'cause it's pretty 00:33:34.11\00:33:37.68 clear that God created them male and female in the beginning 00:33:37.71\00:33:40.28 and He performed the first wedding, and it is a type of 00:33:40.32\00:33:43.82 the relationship that God wants to have with His church. 00:33:43.85\00:33:46.99 So there's nothing wrong with marriage. 00:33:47.02\00:33:48.72 Doug: Yeah, of course Paul, 00:33:48.76\00:33:50.56 he says husbands love your wives, wives love your 00:33:50.59\00:33:52.49 husbands; and he talks a lot about marriage and the marriage 00:33:52.53\00:33:55.40 relationship and he says the marriage bed is undefiled. 00:33:55.43\00:33:58.03 And so, you know, Paul made this one statement and it was during 00:33:58.07\00:34:01.14 a time of persecution. 00:34:01.17\00:34:02.44 He's also talking to people who are involved itinerant 00:34:02.47\00:34:06.11 preaching, and he said it's a little easier to get around and 00:34:06.14\00:34:09.81 preach the gospel if you don't have a family and kids. 00:34:09.84\00:34:12.65 So does that make sense hopefully, Anna? 00:34:12.68\00:34:16.15 Anna: Yeah. Yeah, it does. 00:34:16.18\00:34:18.39 But I mean, didn't Jesus say in Matthew that if you can 00:34:18.42\00:34:26.13 keep from it then do that? 00:34:26.16\00:34:30.10 Doug: Well, Jesus--yeah, Jesus said some people are 00:34:30.13\00:34:34.20 born eunuchs, some people are made eunuchs of man, 00:34:34.24\00:34:36.54 but each one has his own gift. 00:34:36.57\00:34:38.67 I don't know that Jesus was ever advocating, that he did warn 00:34:38.71\00:34:43.14 during the time of trouble that, you know, it could be hard for 00:34:43.18\00:34:47.08 those that are with children. 00:34:47.12\00:34:48.62 But I don't think Jesus had a-- 00:34:48.65\00:34:50.05 Jean: None of the apostles were married. 00:34:50.09\00:34:51.69 You know, Peter was married 'cause he speaks about Jesus 00:34:51.72\00:34:53.42 performing a miracle of healing his mother-in-law and there were 00:34:53.46\00:34:55.62 a woman that traveled with Christ and the disciples and 00:34:55.66\00:34:57.73 helped provide. 00:34:57.76\00:34:59.63 So yeah, he was not against marriage. 00:34:59.66\00:35:01.26 Doug: Yep. Thanks, Anna. 00:35:01.30\00:35:02.80 Jean: Okay, Robert listening in Washington. 00:35:02.83\00:35:04.20 Robert, welcome to the program. 00:35:04.23\00:35:05.93 Robert: Hello, Pastor Ross, Pastor Doug. 00:35:05.97\00:35:07.77 Doug: Hi, Robert. Thanks for calling. 00:35:07.80\00:35:10.04 Robert: No problemo. 00:35:10.07\00:35:12.37 I have three Bible verses here 00:35:12.41\00:35:15.41 and they all sort of contradict each other. 00:35:15.44\00:35:19.31 I guess you've got a couple of them. 00:35:19.35\00:35:22.52 Galatians 5:4 where we're estranged from Christ by 00:35:22.55\00:35:25.79 attempting to be justified by keeping the law. 00:35:25.82\00:35:28.96 And then there's Romans 3:20, 00:35:28.99\00:35:31.33 "By the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified." 00:35:31.36\00:35:34.30 But then there's the opposite the one on ad verse where it 00:35:34.36\00:35:39.27 says in Romans 2:13, "The doers of the law 00:35:39.30\00:35:43.20 will be justified by keeping the law." 00:35:43.24\00:35:48.11 Doug: Yeah, well, I don't think there's a contradiction because 00:35:48.14\00:35:51.65 the word law--and you have to read the context. 00:35:51.68\00:35:54.32 The word law could mean one of several things. 00:35:54.35\00:35:56.25 You have the moral law of the Ten Commandments. 00:35:56.28\00:35:59.09 And by the way, in the Old Testament God actually 00:35:59.12\00:36:01.66 makes the distinction between the different laws. 00:36:01.69\00:36:04.06 And so Paul writing to these people they understood. 00:36:04.09\00:36:06.86 When he's talking to the Galatians, the Ten Commandments 00:36:06.90\00:36:09.93 are never mentioned in Galatians. 00:36:09.96\00:36:11.90 It's really--well, I shouldn't say they're never mentioned. 00:36:11.93\00:36:13.94 The big--the particular commandment that is mentioned 00:36:13.97\00:36:17.14 in Galatians is talking about circumcision. 00:36:17.17\00:36:19.54 They were believing that they were going to become righteous 00:36:19.57\00:36:23.35 through obeying some of these ceremonial laws. 00:36:23.38\00:36:26.92 You know, Paul would never say it's now okay to kill or lie 00:36:26.95\00:36:30.82 or steal or break the Ten Commandments. 00:36:30.85\00:36:32.72 So I think most people, that's what you would call 00:36:32.75\00:36:34.76 a self-evident truth that God is never saying it's okay 00:36:34.79\00:36:38.43 to break those laws. 00:36:38.46\00:36:40.00 Now, we're not justified by keeping any law. 00:36:40.03\00:36:42.10 We're all justified by faith. 00:36:42.13\00:36:44.00 But then when we are saved by faith, 00:36:44.03\00:36:46.60 we want to obey God's law. 00:36:46.63\00:36:48.77 And so that's what he's talking about there in Romans chapter 00:36:48.80\00:36:51.41 2:13, that there's--we're justified by obedience. 00:36:51.44\00:36:57.31 And so--I don't know, hopefully that made sense. 00:36:57.35\00:37:01.55 You know, the--we're judged by our works, and you read this 00:37:01.58\00:37:06.76 in Revelation chapter 1. 00:37:06.79\00:37:08.22 We're judged by our works because our works demonstrate 00:37:08.26\00:37:10.76 if we've been saved by faith. 00:37:10.79\00:37:12.76 Now, that's the key if you understand that. 00:37:12.79\00:37:14.30 If you are saved by faith, your works and obedience 00:37:14.36\00:37:17.60 will be different. 00:37:17.63\00:37:19.00 So, you know, Solomon in the end of his book he 00:37:19.03\00:37:22.74 said, "Here's the whole duty of man. 00:37:22.77\00:37:24.64 Fear God and keep His commandments, for God will bring 00:37:24.67\00:37:27.48 every work into judgment with every secret thing." 00:37:27.51\00:37:29.61 Any thoughts? 00:37:29.64\00:37:31.25 Jean: Yeah. Well, we've got a book. 00:37:31.28\00:37:32.88 It's called, "Does God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:37:32.91\00:37:34.65 And it deals with these very passages. 00:37:34.68\00:37:36.35 The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:37:36.38\00:37:39.85 You can ask for the book "Does God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:37:39.89\00:37:42.69 You can also just dial #250 on your cell phone, 00:37:42.72\00:37:46.39 say "Bible Answers Live," and then ask for the book 00:37:46.43\00:37:49.13 "Does God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:37:49.16\00:37:51.10 And once again, if you're outside of North America just go 00:37:51.13\00:37:53.57 to the website AmazingFacts.org and you can read the book there 00:37:53.60\00:37:56.81 in the free library. 00:37:56.84\00:37:58.17 Next caller that we have is Lisa in California. 00:37:58.21\00:38:00.51 Lisa, you're on "Bible Answers Live." 00:38:00.54\00:38:02.61 Lisa: Hi, hi. Good evening, pastors. 00:38:02.64\00:38:05.28 Doug: Evening. Lisa: Hi. 00:38:05.31\00:38:07.68 So my daughter was baptized a Christian. 00:38:07.72\00:38:11.75 She has been in the Christian colleges. 00:38:11.79\00:38:14.16 She was raised a Christian. 00:38:14.19\00:38:15.69 To cut the story short, last month she came and told me 00:38:15.72\00:38:19.59 and my family that she was a trans man. 00:38:19.63\00:38:23.16 So my question is, is in the Bible I know it mentions things 00:38:23.20\00:38:28.67 that if you surround yourself with certain types of 00:38:28.70\00:38:32.81 people--like I think it's Proverbs 13:20, the wise that 00:38:32.84\00:38:35.48 the wise, just surrounding yourself with wholesome people 00:38:35.51\00:38:38.48 so that you won't be influenced. 00:38:38.51\00:38:40.25 So I have four minor children and they all look up to her. 00:38:40.28\00:38:43.99 And so my concern and my question is, what if that person 00:38:44.02\00:38:47.99 is your daughter? 00:38:48.02\00:38:49.79 She's an adult, she's in college, but I'm concerned about 00:38:49.82\00:38:52.59 my little ones 'cause I've been trying to keep this away from 00:38:52.63\00:38:55.03 them--not away, but try to teach them how it's not acceptable. 00:38:55.06\00:38:58.53 How we love people but it's just not acceptable, but at the same 00:38:58.57\00:39:01.47 time now it's in the family. 00:39:01.50\00:39:03.17 So what does the Bible say when it's your family? 00:39:03.20\00:39:05.81 Doug: Yeah, that is very difficult. 00:39:05.84\00:39:08.04 And it's just--you know, it's sort of indicative of the 00:39:08.08\00:39:10.68 culture we're in right now. 00:39:10.71\00:39:12.38 The devil is going after all the young people, 00:39:12.41\00:39:14.82 and he's getting them all mixed up about their gender identity. 00:39:14.85\00:39:18.65 They're never--the scope of the problem was never like 00:39:18.69\00:39:21.82 it is now because it's almost been subsidized. 00:39:21.86\00:39:24.93 But what do you do in your family? 00:39:24.96\00:39:27.40 You know, you love your daughter and you want to show 00:39:27.46\00:39:30.87 unconditional love and acceptance, but you certainly 00:39:30.90\00:39:32.60 don't approve of the lifestyle. 00:39:32.63\00:39:34.44 And how do you protect the children from an unwholesome 00:39:34.47\00:39:38.07 influence or the wrong messaging coming to them? 00:39:38.11\00:39:41.81 Well, that takes the wisdom of Solomon 00:39:41.84\00:39:44.61 and the courage of Elijah. 00:39:44.65\00:39:46.72 I think that what you have to do is--you know, you want your 00:39:46.75\00:39:52.25 older daughter to feel that she can come to you and that there's 00:39:52.29\00:39:55.76 love there, but you probably need to have a conversation 00:39:55.79\00:39:58.09 where you say, "You know, you know we don't approve of this, 00:39:58.13\00:40:00.60 and we sure don't want that influence on the kids. 00:40:00.63\00:40:03.50 You know, we'd ask that you respect that." 00:40:03.53\00:40:06.17 And just monitor their interaction. 00:40:06.20\00:40:09.94 If there's no respect for that decision, then you might say, 00:40:09.97\00:40:14.81 "You know, we don't want you around the little kids 00:40:14.84\00:40:18.31 unless we're around," or--I don't know. 00:40:18.35\00:40:20.45 You'd have to have some boundaries or something. 00:40:20.48\00:40:22.78 But that is a tough situation. 00:40:22.82\00:40:25.59 Jean: It is. It is a tough one. 00:40:25.62\00:40:26.76 As you said, Pastor Doug, it seems like it's becoming 00:40:26.79\00:40:28.29 an epidemic in our society. 00:40:28.32\00:40:30.03 It's almost being promoted, it seems like. 00:40:30.06\00:40:32.06 Social media and all the rest of it. 00:40:32.09\00:40:34.46 But I think as a parent, you know, your first priority is to 00:40:34.50\00:40:38.53 try and protect your children, especially the younger ones, 00:40:38.57\00:40:42.47 and still be kind to the older ones that might be 00:40:42.50\00:40:46.98 making decisions contrary to us. 00:40:47.01\00:40:48.68 But setting those boundaries I think is important. 00:40:48.71\00:40:51.68 All right. Thank you, Lisa. 00:40:51.71\00:40:54.02 We've got Sam listening in Arizona. 00:40:54.05\00:40:55.45 Sam, welcome to the program. 00:40:55.48\00:40:58.39 Sam: My question is I know that we're not supposed to buy 00:40:58.42\00:41:02.39 or sell on the Sabbath, and I wanted to know if you guys have 00:41:02.42\00:41:07.23 ever had a challenge with that. 00:41:07.23\00:41:10.30 I mean, I know you guys travel and such. 00:41:10.33\00:41:12.70 Doug: Sure, well, I--you know, Pastor Ross can speak for 00:41:12.73\00:41:16.40 himself, but--and by the way, this is not like a church law. 00:41:16.44\00:41:19.87 It tells us in the Book of Nehemiah that the people were 00:41:19.91\00:41:24.28 not supposed to be getting involved in business and buying 00:41:24.31\00:41:27.68 and selling on the Sabbath. 00:41:27.72\00:41:29.35 It was a holy day. 00:41:29.38\00:41:30.75 It's not a day for doing our work. 00:41:30.79\00:41:32.55 In our family, most Sabbath keepers, whether you're 00:41:32.59\00:41:34.36 Christians or Jews, you know, if you've got to buy things, 00:41:34.39\00:41:37.36 you do your shopping, you don't do that on Sabbath. 00:41:37.39\00:41:39.79 That's just sort of--and that's why you've even got blue laws 00:41:39.83\00:41:43.43 in the country. 00:41:43.47\00:41:45.30 It's because the early Christians realize you're not 00:41:45.33\00:41:47.57 supposed to be shopping on Sunday 00:41:47.60\00:41:49.50 and they actually outlawed it. 00:41:49.54\00:41:50.91 Now, I'm not saying that that should happen, 00:41:50.94\00:41:52.34 but I'm just saying that's why those laws came from. 00:41:52.37\00:41:54.34 They knew that that was not a day for shopping. 00:41:54.38\00:41:56.31 So--but in every now and then, and Pastor Ross and I we travel 00:41:56.34\00:42:00.38 internationally, and I'll be taking another international 00:42:00.42\00:42:03.62 trip next week, sometimes when the time change and airports are 00:42:03.65\00:42:09.42 delayed you find yourself even in spite of your best planning 00:42:09.46\00:42:14.23 things go wrong and all of a sudden you've-- 00:42:14.30\00:42:16.20 you're in some foreign country and the Sabbath is coming. 00:42:16.23\00:42:19.00 You'll be caught in emergencies. 00:42:19.03\00:42:20.97 And Jesus said, you know, sometimes the ox is in the ditch 00:42:21.00\00:42:23.27 and you do your best to prepare to avoid that, 00:42:23.30\00:42:26.14 but I think God is a loving and understanding God. 00:42:26.17\00:42:29.74 And there's a place in the Bible where Hezekiah 00:42:29.78\00:42:32.15 he prayed one time. 00:42:32.18\00:42:34.08 The priests were trying to keep up with the demands of 00:42:34.12\00:42:37.32 the people for offering sacrifice and Hezekiah said, 00:42:37.35\00:42:40.36 "They haven't had a chance 00:42:40.39\00:42:41.89 to cleanse themselves the way they should. 00:42:41.92\00:42:43.32 Lord, have mercy on them." 00:42:43.36\00:42:44.53 And God heard his prayer and forgave the priests so they 00:42:44.56\00:42:46.53 could just keep up with the demand for sacrifice. 00:42:46.56\00:42:49.60 So I think God is a practical God, but we should do everything 00:42:49.63\00:42:53.54 we can to avoid those occasions. 00:42:53.57\00:42:55.87 Jean: Yes, interesting. 00:42:55.90\00:42:57.64 Even back in the time of Christ, the day before the Sabbath, our 00:42:57.67\00:43:00.88 Friday, was referred to as the preparation day. 00:43:00.91\00:43:03.68 And so they--knowing the Sabbath was coming, they would buy 00:43:03.71\00:43:06.45 what they have to buy. 00:43:06.48\00:43:07.78 They would cook with that so that on the Sabbath 00:43:07.82\00:43:09.72 they could rest. 00:43:09.75\00:43:11.39 And so I think even today we want to do as much of the 00:43:11.42\00:43:13.39 shopping and the preparation as possible the day before the 00:43:13.42\00:43:17.19 Sabbath so we can rest. 00:43:17.23\00:43:19.29 However, as Pastor Doug says, there are times where somebody 00:43:19.33\00:43:22.43 in the family might get sick and you need to take a trip to the 00:43:22.46\00:43:25.13 pharmacy to get some medicine. 00:43:25.17\00:43:27.07 That's perfectly okay. 00:43:27.10\00:43:28.94 That is an emergency type of situation, but we want to 00:43:28.97\00:43:31.91 prepare as much as possible beforehand. 00:43:31.94\00:43:34.04 Doug: Yeah. And I found one of the verses. 00:43:34.08\00:43:35.74 It's in Nehemiah chapter 13, verse 17, and Nehemiah says, 00:43:35.78\00:43:40.08 "Then I contended with the nobles of Judah." 00:43:40.12\00:43:42.38 This is when they were having the people of Tyre. 00:43:42.42\00:43:44.55 They were coming and buying and selling in the city. 00:43:44.59\00:43:46.52 "I contended with them and said, 'What evil thing is this you do 00:43:46.55\00:43:48.46 and you profaning the Sabbath? 00:43:48.49\00:43:51.06 Did not your fathers do this? 00:43:51.09\00:43:52.63 Did not our God bring all this disaster on this city? 00:43:52.66\00:43:55.60 Yet you bring out a wrath on Israel 00:43:55.63\00:43:57.67 by profaning the Sabbath.' 00:43:57.70\00:43:58.83 So it was at the gates of Jerusalem as it began to be dark 00:43:58.87\00:44:01.97 before the Sabbath, I commanded the gates to be shut.'" 00:44:02.00\00:44:04.37 'Cause all the pagans were coming in to sell things, 00:44:04.41\00:44:06.34 people couldn't resist the temptation. 00:44:06.37\00:44:08.01 It was on sale, you know. 00:44:08.04\00:44:09.68 So they understood that even going way back then. 00:44:09.71\00:44:12.18 Jean: All right. Thank you. 00:44:12.21\00:44:14.18 Next caller that we have is Jim listening in Texas. 00:44:14.22\00:44:16.18 Jim, welcome to the program. 00:44:16.22\00:44:17.72 Jim: Thank you, gentlemen. Doug: Sure. 00:44:17.75\00:44:20.42 Jim: My question is pertaining to Jesus being 00:44:20.46\00:44:24.99 in the tomb three days and three nights. 00:44:25.03\00:44:28.10 And I've heard Pastor Doug explain pushing back into 00:44:28.13\00:44:30.47 Thursday when he's beginning to--when he's arrested and all. 00:44:30.50\00:44:34.84 But that's still Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights. 00:44:34.87\00:44:38.04 I still don't get where the 2 days come-- 00:44:38.07\00:44:40.64 the third day comes in. 00:44:40.68\00:44:42.58 Doug: Yeah, well, that time period overlaps into 3 days. 00:44:42.61\00:44:48.62 So the sufferings of Christ--you know, sufferings of Jesus began 00:44:48.65\00:44:52.95 even before he was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:44:52.99\00:44:57.89 He's, you know, praying and sweating blood. 00:44:57.93\00:45:00.96 It's--he was in agony before anyone else laid a hand on him. 00:45:00.96\00:45:05.33 So--and Jesus, you know, he explained even 00:45:05.37\00:45:09.30 in the last supper that heaviness. 00:45:09.34\00:45:12.74 So I think that you can count Thursday as part of that. 00:45:12.77\00:45:16.58 So you got Thursday, Friday, Saturday. 00:45:16.61\00:45:18.91 He rises Sunday morning. 00:45:18.95\00:45:20.62 And in the Jewish calculation any part of a day could be 00:45:20.65\00:45:22.85 considered the day. 00:45:22.88\00:45:24.75 So if the experience bled over into a day, 00:45:24.79\00:45:28.26 you could count that day. 00:45:28.29\00:45:30.03 They didn't count it by the minutes and the hours. 00:45:30.06\00:45:31.96 Jean: You know, we have a book. 00:45:31.99\00:45:33.63 It's called "The Sign of Jonah," and it talks about three days, 00:45:33.66\00:45:36.43 three nights and that'll explain that even in more detail. 00:45:36.46\00:45:39.63 So to get that, just call 800-835-6747 or you dial #250 00:45:39.67\00:45:46.01 on your phone and say "Bible Answers Live" and ask for the 00:45:46.04\00:45:49.21 book "Three Days, Three Nights, The Sign of Jonah," 00:45:49.24\00:45:52.18 and we'll send that to you. 00:45:52.21\00:45:53.95 Next caller that we have is John listening in Nebraska. 00:45:53.98\00:45:56.65 John, welcome to the program. 00:45:56.69\00:45:58.75 John: Yeah. Good evening, pastors. 00:45:58.79\00:46:01.16 Doug: Hi. How are you doing? 00:46:01.19\00:46:03.49 John: Got a question from Revelation verse-- 00:46:03.53\00:46:07.60 chapter 2, verse 10. 00:46:07.60\00:46:10.53 It states in there, of course, we're not to fear our upcoming 00:46:10.57\00:46:14.60 problems that the devil is going to put on to us, but it says our 00:46:14.64\00:46:18.14 trials and tribulations will be 10 days. 00:46:18.17\00:46:20.58 Can you please explain the 10 days? 00:46:20.61\00:46:22.74 Doug: Yeah, this is the message--and Pastor Ross 00:46:22.78\00:46:25.78 may want to comment on this as well. 00:46:25.81\00:46:27.45 This is the message to the church of Smyrna. 00:46:27.48\00:46:30.12 This is one of the ages of the church. 00:46:30.15\00:46:31.95 I think it's the second age of the church after Ephesus. 00:46:31.99\00:46:34.62 There was a time of great persecution. 00:46:34.66\00:46:36.52 In prophecy, a day represents a year. 00:46:36.56\00:46:39.43 And this was a time of severe persecution, I believe under 00:46:39.46\00:46:42.73 the Emperor Diocletian. 00:46:42.76\00:46:44.57 Jean: Yeah, from the year 303 00:46:44.60\00:46:47.54 through 313, a total of 10 years. 00:46:47.57\00:46:50.01 And this--of course, there was persecution throughout 00:46:50.04\00:46:52.21 the period of Rome and the Christians, but this 10-year 00:46:52.24\00:46:55.48 period was Diocletian's attempt to completely 00:46:55.51\00:46:58.08 eradicate Christianity. 00:46:58.11\00:47:00.42 And, of course, Christianity was legalized by Constantine in 313. 00:47:00.45\00:47:05.02 So 10 years before that there were a terrible time of 00:47:05.05\00:47:08.42 persecution that took place in Rome and all of the Roman 00:47:08.46\00:47:11.03 provinces throughout Asia Minor. 00:47:11.06\00:47:12.89 Doug Yeah, they not only burnt Christians, they burned Bibles. 00:47:12.93\00:47:15.56 He was trying to, like you said, eliminate the Christian faith. 00:47:15.60\00:47:19.37 So it's not talking about 10 days in the future. 00:47:19.40\00:47:22.57 That message to the church of Smyrna is describing 10 days 00:47:22.60\00:47:26.71 during that second age of church history. 00:47:26.74\00:47:30.28 Okay, thanks so much. 00:47:30.31\00:47:32.31 Jean: Steven in California. Steven, welcome to the program. 00:47:32.35\00:47:35.28 Steven: I was wondering seven men married the same woman. 00:47:35.32\00:47:40.46 They were all brothers. 00:47:40.49\00:47:42.36 One died after the other, and they asked whose wife she would 00:47:42.39\00:47:44.93 be in heaven and Jesus said for when they arrived they need 00:47:44.96\00:47:50.47 to marry or given in marriage--or as the angels. 00:47:50.50\00:47:55.07 So is there a Scripture that actually says we will be 00:47:55.10\00:47:58.31 reunited with our loved ones? 00:47:58.34\00:48:00.74 Doug: Well, we'll be reunited with saved loved ones. 00:48:00.78\00:48:04.35 And you could look at 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, 00:48:04.38\00:48:07.05 verse 16. 00:48:07.08\00:48:08.85 "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with 00:48:08.88\00:48:11.42 a shout, with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet 00:48:11.45\00:48:14.19 of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 00:48:14.22\00:48:17.23 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up 00:48:17.26\00:48:20.60 together with them." 00:48:20.63\00:48:22.36 So there you have it. We are together with them. 00:48:22.40\00:48:24.90 "In the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. 00:48:24.93\00:48:26.37 Thus we will always be with the Lord. 00:48:26.40\00:48:28.87 Comfort one another with these words." 00:48:28.90\00:48:31.04 He's--Paul's saying--he was actually writing 00:48:31.07\00:48:33.34 to the Thessalonians. 00:48:33.38\00:48:34.58 He says, "You don't need to sorrow about--as others 'cause 00:48:34.61\00:48:36.78 you've lost your loved ones. 00:48:36.81\00:48:38.15 You'll be reunited." 00:48:38.18\00:48:39.65 And the understanding is with those who have died in faith, 00:48:39.68\00:48:42.35 the dead in Christ. 00:48:42.38\00:48:43.75 Jean: And one more verse, 1 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 12 00:48:43.79\00:48:46.19 Paul writes, "For now we see as in a mirror, dimly, 00:48:46.22\00:48:49.26 but then face to face. 00:48:49.29\00:48:51.63 Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I am known." 00:48:51.66\00:48:55.96 So we get to know each other. 00:48:56.00\00:48:57.73 We're going to interact. 00:48:57.77\00:48:59.40 We're going to be able to worship God. 00:48:59.43\00:49:00.80 We'll see our loved ones, our friends. 00:49:00.84\00:49:02.40 It will be a day of reunion when Jesus comes. 00:49:02.44\00:49:04.27 All right. Thank you, Steven. 00:49:04.31\00:49:05.84 We do have a study guide that talks about 00:49:05.87\00:49:07.28 the second coming of Christ. 00:49:07.31\00:49:09.31 It's called "Rescue From Above," and we'll be happy to send that 00:49:09.34\00:49:11.98 to anyone who calls and asks. 00:49:12.01\00:49:13.85 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:49:13.88\00:49:16.79 Ask for the study guide "Rescue From Above" or dial #250 00:49:16.82\00:49:20.99 on your smartphone and ask for that study guide. 00:49:21.02\00:49:23.46 Dave is listening in Florida. 00:49:23.49\00:49:25.79 Dave, welcome to "Bible Answers Live." 00:49:25.83\00:49:27.86 Dave: Hey, pastors. How are you doing? 00:49:27.93\00:49:30.93 Doug: Doing well, thank you. And you? 00:49:30.97\00:49:32.77 Dave: I'm quite fine. 00:49:32.80\00:49:35.47 I was having a Bible study yesterday. 00:49:35.50\00:49:39.37 I stumbled upon Matthew 10, verse 28 where it says that fear 00:49:39.41\00:49:45.98 him not which killed the body but cannot kill the soul, 00:49:46.01\00:49:50.22 but rather fear him who can can destroy both body 00:49:50.25\00:49:52.95 and soul in hell. 00:49:52.99\00:49:55.62 Could you clarify that for me a little bit 'cause 00:49:55.66\00:49:58.23 I'm a little bit confused in that part? 00:49:58.26\00:50:01.10 Doug: Yeah, well, I think that all of us know 00:50:01.13\00:50:03.50 that we've got a physical body. 00:50:03.53\00:50:05.43 And so the Lord is talking about that there. 00:50:05.47\00:50:07.87 And a person could have a physical body without any 00:50:07.90\00:50:10.41 personality in it. 00:50:10.44\00:50:11.94 You know, if a person is brain dead, their body might keep 00:50:11.97\00:50:15.24 functioning but--it's like the, you know, 00:50:15.28\00:50:17.25 lights are on but no one's home. 00:50:17.28\00:50:19.11 So you've got your character, which is the combination of 00:50:19.15\00:50:23.22 your spirit of life and the body, your personality. 00:50:23.25\00:50:27.16 Jesus said don't be afraid of those who might torture your 00:50:27.19\00:50:30.79 body and they can't really touch your soul, soul meaning 00:50:30.83\00:50:33.66 the part of you that will be your personality 00:50:33.70\00:50:36.73 in a new body in heaven. 00:50:36.77\00:50:39.27 Said, "But fear him who can destroy both the body 00:50:39.30\00:50:42.44 and the soul in the lake of fire." 00:50:42.47\00:50:45.91 So--I don't know. 00:50:45.94\00:50:48.54 Does that answer what you're asking? 00:50:48.58\00:50:50.75 Dave: Kind of. 00:50:50.78\00:50:52.68 'Cause what I want to get clarification because I 00:50:52.71\00:50:54.78 know--other person will read this and say--use this to 00:50:54.82\00:50:57.49 justify to say; yes, since we have body and we have a soul, 00:50:57.52\00:51:02.96 which, you know, the world believes in, you know, 00:51:02.99\00:51:05.66 when you die your, you know, spirit as they say. 00:51:05.69\00:51:08.13 So I just want--as I said, you know, like when I was doing 00:51:08.16\00:51:14.14 the study that the Spirit said to me that--you know, I think 00:51:14.17\00:51:16.81 the same thing that you said is speaking your mind, fear you can 00:51:16.84\00:51:21.34 who can kill both body and mind. 00:51:21.38\00:51:24.31 That's what I get. 00:51:24.35\00:51:25.75 But I just want to confirm that what I get from that is actually 00:51:25.78\00:51:28.82 so forth because I know a person will read this and make 00:51:28.85\00:51:32.15 a whole entire doctrine from this. 00:51:32.19\00:51:34.36 Doug: Yeah, they got the soul as like a separate ghost that 00:51:34.39\00:51:37.06 floats around outside of your body, but the Bible is pretty 00:51:37.09\00:51:40.00 clear that--and you'll look at other verses, that the soul is 00:51:40.03\00:51:44.77 the combination of the breath of life and the body together, 00:51:44.80\00:51:49.47 and that we don't come back from the grave. 00:51:49.50\00:51:54.18 We're not conscious, and we don't go off to heaven 00:51:54.21\00:51:56.04 until the resurrection and the judgment. 00:51:56.08\00:51:58.85 Jean: You know, Paul said, talking about the resurrection, 00:51:58.88\00:52:01.05 "I shall know even as I am known." 00:52:01.08\00:52:03.02 So that ability to still recognize who we are to know 00:52:03.05\00:52:06.55 who we are, to have our own thoughts, our own feelings, 00:52:06.59\00:52:09.29 the essence you might say of life. 00:52:09.32\00:52:11.79 So it's that part sometimes referred to as the soul 00:52:11.83\00:52:14.56 and then the body. 00:52:14.56\00:52:16.30 Whereas Jesus says he can destroy both body and soul in 00:52:16.33\00:52:19.67 hell, that almost contradict--or that does contradict the idea 00:52:19.70\00:52:23.47 that the wicked will have an eternal burning soul 00:52:23.51\00:52:26.47 in the lake of fire. 00:52:26.51\00:52:27.98 Jesus says he shall destroy it. 00:52:28.01\00:52:29.64 So there isn't some part of our being that lives on 00:52:29.68\00:52:32.95 independently from the body. 00:52:32.98\00:52:34.48 Doug: Right. Jean: All right. 00:52:34.52\00:52:36.32 Thank you, Dave. 00:52:36.35\00:52:37.95 We've got Caleb listening in New York. 00:52:37.99\00:52:39.42 Caleb, welcome to the program. 00:52:39.45\00:52:40.96 Caleb: Hello, Pastor Doug Batchelor, Pastor Ross. 00:52:40.99\00:52:43.22 Doug: Evening. 00:52:43.26\00:52:44.79 Caleb: How are you guys doing? 00:52:44.83\00:52:45.99 Doug: Doing great. 00:52:46.03\00:52:47.40 Caleb: So I have a question about kings when I know I should 00:52:47.40\00:52:49.90 be studying prophecy right now, but prophecy I'm going to let 00:52:49.93\00:52:53.23 that--you guys teach prophecy because you guys 00:52:53.27\00:52:56.47 are amazing at it. 00:52:56.50\00:52:58.27 But my question is from 1 Kings 2nd verse-- 00:52:58.31\00:53:02.74 1 Kings 2, verse 13 to 25. 00:53:02.78\00:53:08.35 I think it's--why did King Solomon kill 00:53:08.38\00:53:14.52 his brother Adonijah? 00:53:14.56\00:53:17.36 'Cause I started reading this and I'm confused like-- 00:53:17.39\00:53:20.13 'cause he asked for a wife. 00:53:20.16\00:53:22.10 Doug: Yeah, Adonijah wanted to have Abishag. 00:53:22.13\00:53:26.84 Abishag had been a concubine, you might say, of David's. 00:53:26.87\00:53:29.74 Adonijah tried to make himself king, and after David died 00:53:29.77\00:53:35.28 Adonijah--you know, he kept his head down for a little while, 00:53:35.31\00:53:38.01 but it really bothered him that his younger brother-- 00:53:38.05\00:53:40.22 Solomon was the youngest. 00:53:40.25\00:53:42.32 It bothered him that his younger brother, he felt like, 00:53:42.35\00:53:44.52 took the throne. 00:53:44.55\00:53:46.15 And so he began to conspire again, and one of the first 00:53:46.19\00:53:49.19 things he was going to do is he thought, "If I have 00:53:49.22\00:53:51.36 David's wife, that will show that I have his throne." 00:53:51.39\00:53:55.56 When Absalom wanted to overthrow David as king, 00:53:55.60\00:53:58.93 he took his concubines. 00:53:58.97\00:54:01.14 And so Solomon being very wise, he saw what his brother 00:54:01.17\00:54:04.57 was up to and that it was going to lead to a rebellion and 00:54:04.61\00:54:08.11 went--Adonijah, he actually got Bathsheba 00:54:08.14\00:54:10.51 to make the request for him. 00:54:10.55\00:54:12.18 Solomon's mother Bathsheba. 00:54:12.21\00:54:14.22 And he said, "You know, can I have that beautiful girl 00:54:14.25\00:54:16.75 Abishag as a wife? 00:54:16.79\00:54:18.32 After all, you know, David never knew her. 00:54:18.35\00:54:19.92 She was just sort of a hot water bottle to keep him warm when he 00:54:19.95\00:54:22.82 was getting old." 00:54:22.86\00:54:24.69 And Solomon saw through what he was up to and he said, 00:54:24.73\00:54:28.46 "All right, you stepped over the line now. 00:54:28.50\00:54:30.53 I'm not going to have--I'm not going to be living in the shadow 00:54:30.57\00:54:33.34 of fear that you're going to try to assassinate me 00:54:33.37\00:54:36.64 or take over the kingdom." 00:54:36.67\00:54:38.37 He had already tried it once. 00:54:38.41\00:54:40.14 So then Solomon killed Adonijah and he also killed Joab 00:54:40.18\00:54:43.14 who had conspired with Adonijah to overthrow Solomon. 00:54:43.18\00:54:47.92 So he was basically trying to just bring peace to the kingdom, 00:54:47.95\00:54:52.32 and it did. 00:54:52.35\00:54:53.86 It brought--he had to settle his leadership and bring peace. 00:54:53.89\00:54:55.69 Hey, friends. We are going to sign off. 00:54:55.72\00:54:58.03 As you've heard before, we sign off in two stages. 00:54:58.06\00:55:00.63 We're going to say farewell to those on satellite, 00:55:00.66\00:55:03.20 but the rest of you stay close by. 00:55:03.23\00:55:05.00 We're going to be doing some rapid fire Bible questions 00:55:05.03\00:55:07.67 in about 30 seconds. 00:55:07.70\00:55:09.50 announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:55:12.81\00:55:15.11 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. 00:55:15.14\00:55:18.48 "Bible Answers Live" is produced by Amazing Facts International, 00:55:18.51\00:55:22.25 a faith-based ministry located in Granite Bay, California. 00:55:22.28\00:55:26.65 Jean: Hello, friends, 00:55:28.46\00:55:29.76 and welcome back to "Bible Answers Live." 00:55:29.79\00:55:31.43 This is the part of the program where we get to answer some of 00:55:31.46\00:55:33.43 your email questions that you've sent. 00:55:33.46\00:55:36.16 If you'd like to email us your Bible question, just 00:55:36.20\00:55:38.43 BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:55:38.47\00:55:41.57 Pastor Doug, Daniel is asking, what is your take on reverence 00:55:41.60\00:55:45.24 in the sanctuary? 00:55:45.27\00:55:46.98 Doug: We should do it. 00:55:47.01\00:55:48.84 I could probably say more than that, but, you know, God is a 00:55:48.88\00:55:52.25 holy God and in particular--now, when we say sanctuary, you know, 00:55:52.28\00:55:56.48 a lot of churches today, they are using a multi-use facility. 00:55:56.52\00:56:00.49 They may be meeting in something that serves as a school during 00:56:00.52\00:56:04.53 the week or an auditorium and--but when we set a site 00:56:04.56\00:56:08.60 for religious purposes and we've invited God's presence, I think 00:56:08.63\00:56:12.93 there should be reverence there. 00:56:12.97\00:56:14.47 The Bible says the Lord is in His holy temple at all the earth 00:56:14.50\00:56:17.81 keeps silent, and we should bow in reverence before His name. 00:56:17.84\00:56:22.11 So if the angels are by the throne of God saying, "Holy, 00:56:22.14\00:56:25.78 holy, holy," then God's people when we come into the presence 00:56:25.81\00:56:29.55 of God should show respect. 00:56:29.58\00:56:31.92 Jean: Okay. 00:56:31.95\00:56:33.76 Warren is asking, "How can Satan and his angels still be alive 00:56:33.79\00:56:36.83 today if they cannot eat from the tree of life?" 00:56:36.86\00:56:39.53 Doug: Well, if the devil had a digestive system like a human 00:56:39.56\00:56:42.53 or like a physical creature, that would be--that 00:56:42.56\00:56:46.67 would make sense. 00:56:46.70\00:56:48.64 But the Bible tells us that angels are spirits, and I don't 00:56:48.67\00:56:52.77 know that the spirits are sustained by eating, you know, 00:56:52.81\00:56:56.41 bananas or fruit or--nothing in the Bible says that the devils 00:56:56.44\00:57:00.35 need to eat or drink. 00:57:00.38\00:57:03.15 There's some kind of--they're sustained in some other way. 00:57:03.18\00:57:06.35 We don't understand it's something of a mystery in that 00:57:06.39\00:57:08.72 world, but--yeah. 00:57:08.76\00:57:10.16 So I don't think that he's needed to eat 00:57:10.19\00:57:11.89 from the tree of life. 00:57:11.93\00:57:13.09 Jean: All right. 00:57:13.13\00:57:14.50 Then we have Kathy that's asking, "Where in the Bible does 00:57:14.56\00:57:15.96 it say that children who die before the age of accountability 00:57:16.00\00:57:18.13 will be saved if their parents are saved?" 00:57:18.17\00:57:21.20 Doug: Well, that is--that's a difficult subject because, you 00:57:21.24\00:57:25.14 know, on one hand you're asking every child that's ever lived 00:57:25.17\00:57:29.51 that dies before the age of accountability are they all in 00:57:29.54\00:57:32.45 heaven, and there's some question where that but then 00:57:32.48\00:57:37.85 is--certainly I don't believe children that die before the age 00:57:37.89\00:57:40.06 of accountability are going to be suffering in hell. 00:57:40.09\00:57:43.09 But then Paul says something--I think it's 1 Corinthians chapter 00:57:43.12\00:57:46.43 7 where he basically says that the children of the believing 00:57:46.46\00:57:51.33 parent are sanctified by their parents' faith. 00:57:51.37\00:57:56.30 And so the believing parents has had some sanctifying influence. 00:57:56.34\00:57:59.87 And many times the Bible when a person was saved it says they 00:57:59.91\00:58:02.74 and their house, meaning maybe their family, their children. 00:58:02.78\00:58:05.41 Hey, friends. I hope that helps a little bit. 00:58:05.45\00:58:07.92 We are so thankful that you've joined us for 00:58:07.95\00:58:09.15 "Bible Answers Live." 00:58:09.18\00:58:10.29 We are a faith-based ministry, meaning we're brought 00:58:10.32\00:58:12.82 to you by you. 00:58:12.85\00:58:14.52 If you've been blessed, keep us on the air. 00:58:14.56\00:58:16.42 We'll study next week. 00:58:16.46\00:58:18.29 announcer: "Bible Answers Live," 00:58:20.26\00:58:22.20 honest and accurate answers to your Bible questions. 00:58:22.23\00:58:25.80
