¤¤¤ 00:00:00.73\00:00:03.13 male announcer: It is the best-selling book in history. 00:00:03.26\00:00:05.63 No volume ever written has been more loved and quoted, and its 00:00:05.67\00:00:10.07 words sometimes simple and sometimes mysterious, should 00:00:10.11\00:00:14.11 always be studied carefully. 00:00:14.14\00:00:16.34 It is the Bible, the Word of God. 00:00:16.38\00:00:19.65 Welcome to "Bible Answers Live," providing accurate and practical 00:00:19.68\00:00:24.52 answers to all your Bible questions. 00:00:24.55\00:00:28.12 This broadcast is a previously recorded episode. 00:00:28.39\00:00:31.26 To receive any of the Bible resources mentioned in this 00:00:31.29\00:00:34.03 broadcast, call 800-835-6747. 00:00:34.10\00:00:38.90 Once again, that's 800-835-6747. 00:00:38.93\00:00:43.51 Now here's your host, from Amazing Facts International, 00:00:44.04\00:00:48.11 Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:00:48.14\00:00:50.18 Doug Batchelor: Hello, friends. 00:00:50.21\00:00:51.51 Would you like to hear an amazing fact? 00:00:51.55\00:00:54.35 The holy grail of global energy is the heat beneath our feet, 00:00:54.38\00:00:59.39 geothermal energy. 00:00:59.42\00:01:01.69 All over the planet, between 5 and 20 miles below our feet, 00:01:01.72\00:01:05.49 there is molten rock, well over 1,000 degrees. 00:01:05.53\00:01:09.26 That heat can produce enough steam-generated electricity 00:01:09.30\00:01:12.93 to power the planet. 00:01:12.97\00:01:14.90 The problem has been the drilling technology 00:01:14.94\00:01:17.44 to get down there. 00:01:17.47\00:01:18.94 The deepest hole ever bored into the earth was 00:01:18.97\00:01:21.81 the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia. 00:01:21.84\00:01:24.88 In 1992, it reached over 40,000 feet--that's 7 1/2 miles--before 00:01:24.91\00:01:30.72 it had to stop because the heat was melting the drill bits. 00:01:30.75\00:01:33.79 Now there's a company with new technology that does not rely on 00:01:33.82\00:01:37.86 traditional drilling methods. 00:01:37.89\00:01:39.79 Quaise Energy, working with MIT, has developed new drill bits 00:01:39.83\00:01:44.10 with a millimeter wave energy that are designed to melt and 00:01:44.13\00:01:47.34 vaporize rock to create deeper holes to reach and harness the 00:01:47.37\00:01:51.61 heat in the earth's core. 00:01:51.64\00:01:54.01 Quaise Energy says there's enough energy in the earth's 00:01:54.04\00:01:57.31 magma to power every city on earth for thousands of years. 00:01:57.35\00:02:02.12 Clearly, Pastor Ross, it's a question of going deeper. 00:02:02.15\00:02:05.49 Jean Ross: That's right. 00:02:05.52\00:02:06.89 The deeper you go, the more energy you get. 00:02:06.92\00:02:08.39 Doug: Get power. 00:02:08.42\00:02:09.72 Jean: I think there's a spiritual application there, 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.09 Pastor Doug. 00:02:11.13\00:02:12.46 If we want to have the power of the Holy Spirit, we need to seek 00:02:12.49\00:02:14.56 for a deeper experience in the things of God, a deeper 00:02:14.60\00:02:17.73 understanding of His Word, a deeper commitment 00:02:17.77\00:02:20.80 of our lives to Him. 00:02:20.84\00:02:22.60 There is power in the Spirit. 00:02:22.64\00:02:23.94 Doug: That's right. 00:02:23.97\00:02:25.27 Makes me think of the passage where Jesus says, in Luke 00:02:25.31\00:02:27.34 chapter 6, verse 48, "A wise man is like a man building a house, 00:02:27.38\00:02:32.28 who dug deep, and he laid the foundation on the rock. 00:02:32.31\00:02:36.42 And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against 00:02:36.45\00:02:39.39 that house, and it could not shake it, 00:02:39.42\00:02:41.89 for it was founded on the rock." 00:02:41.92\00:02:43.96 And, of course, Jesus said to the woman at the well that He 00:02:43.99\00:02:46.96 was offering her this artesian water, and she said, 00:02:47.00\00:02:50.73 "But the well is deep." 00:02:50.77\00:02:52.40 And, well, of course, that Jacob's well was deep, but you 00:02:52.43\00:02:56.17 also have to go deep if you want the living water, and going 00:02:56.20\00:02:59.27 deeper into our relationship with the Lord in our prayers, in 00:02:59.31\00:03:03.28 our study, you get more by going deeper, and we try to go a 00:03:03.31\00:03:08.55 little deeper sometimes on this program, but if you'd like to 00:03:08.58\00:03:11.32 know how you can have a deeper relationship with God in His 00:03:11.35\00:03:14.09 Spirit, how do we do that? 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.42 Jean: We've got a book, and it's free. 00:03:16.46\00:03:18.16 We'll send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:03:18.19\00:03:19.93 The book is called "Life in the Spirit," 00:03:19.96\00:03:21.93 and it's all about the Holy Spirit. 00:03:21.96\00:03:23.43 That is our free offer today, and if you'd like to call for 00:03:23.47\00:03:26.03 it, the number is 800-835-6747, and you can ask for Offer Number 00:03:26.07\00:03:31.54 155, or just call, ask for it by name, "Life in the Spirit," or 00:03:31.57\00:03:36.68 there's another way you can get the book. 00:03:36.71\00:03:38.18 Just simply dial "#250" on your smartphone and say, 00:03:38.21\00:03:42.62 "Bible Answers Live!" 00:03:42.65\00:03:43.95 and then ask for the book "Life in the Spirit," and we'll be 00:03:43.99\00:03:46.42 happy to send that to anyone who gives us a call 00:03:46.45\00:03:48.72 or gets in touch with us. 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.06 If you're outside of North America, outside of the U.S. 00:03:50.09\00:03:52.89 and Canada, you can access this by just going to our website, 00:03:52.93\00:03:56.30 just, AmazingFacts.org. 00:03:56.33\00:03:58.93 You'll be able to read the book for free there. 00:03:58.97\00:04:00.87 And, Pastor Doug, we want to greet 00:04:00.90\00:04:02.67 all of those who are joining us. 00:04:02.70\00:04:04.27 I know we have people who are watching on AFTV and, of course, 00:04:04.31\00:04:06.21 listening on the radio across the country, but we also have 00:04:06.24\00:04:08.41 others who are participating in this program online, outside of 00:04:08.44\00:04:11.21 the U.S., folks all around the world and Europe and down in 00:04:11.25\00:04:15.42 Australia and likewise. 00:04:15.45\00:04:16.75 We want to welcome all of you to this special, kin-depth Bible 00:04:16.79\00:04:20.16 study where we try to go a little deeper in the Word. 00:04:20.19\00:04:23.16 Doug: Amen, and so, yeah, we're also streaming on, 00:04:23.19\00:04:28.16 as you mentioned, Facebook. 00:04:28.20\00:04:29.50 It's the Amazing Facts Facebook page, the Doug Batchelor 00:04:29.53\00:04:32.37 Facebook page, and you can text your friends right now and say, 00:04:32.40\00:04:36.00 "Bible Answers Live" is live. 00:04:36.04\00:04:38.47 So call in with your questions. 00:04:38.51\00:04:39.81 We're on TV, we're on radio, and we're going to go before the 00:04:39.84\00:04:43.08 Lord and then go on to the phones. 00:04:43.11\00:04:45.15 Jean: Let's start with a word of prayer. 00:04:45.18\00:04:46.68 Dear Father, we thank You, once again, that we have this 00:04:46.72\00:04:48.48 opportunity to open up Your Word and study. 00:04:48.52\00:04:51.22 Lord, we know there's power in the Word. 00:04:51.25\00:04:53.89 Jesus said, "You shall know the truth, and the truth will set 00:04:53.92\00:04:56.49 you free," so we pray, Lord, that our minds will be clear to 00:04:56.52\00:04:59.36 receive the Word of truth. 00:04:59.39\00:05:01.00 So bless those who are listening and those who call in. 00:05:01.03\00:05:03.33 And we pray for guidance, Lord, as we search here, in the 00:05:03.37\00:05:06.13 studio, the Scriptures. 00:05:06.17\00:05:07.47 We ask this in Jesus's name, amen. 00:05:07.50\00:05:09.34 Doug: Amen. 00:05:09.37\00:05:10.67 Jean: Well, we're ready to go to 00:05:10.71\00:05:12.04 our first caller this evening. 00:05:12.07\00:05:13.38 We've got a caller from London, England. 00:05:13.41\00:05:15.01 Dawn, welcome to the program. 00:05:15.04\00:05:16.34 You are on the air. 00:05:16.38\00:05:19.45 Dawn: Good morning, Pastor Doug and Pastor Jean Ross. 00:05:19.48\00:05:22.85 My question is God commands us to worship 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.65 on the seventh day, Sabbath. 00:05:26.69\00:05:28.79 Of all the calendar and timeline changes over the years, how do 00:05:28.82\00:05:32.96 we know with great certainty that the Saturday that we 00:05:32.99\00:05:36.97 observe today is still the Sabbath? 00:05:37.00\00:05:40.57 Doug: You know, when I get that question, I would--I always 00:05:40.60\00:05:43.27 am tempted to say to those that worship on the first day of the 00:05:43.30\00:05:47.01 week, "How do you know that's the day that it is?" 00:05:47.04\00:05:50.55 People usually have no trouble remembering what the days of the 00:05:50.58\00:05:54.52 week are until they learn the Sabbath truth and say, 00:05:54.55\00:05:56.69 "Well, we really don't know." 00:05:56.72\00:05:58.42 But, first of all, you can just look at--there's a whole nation 00:05:58.45\00:06:01.56 of Jews all over the world, and they have been keeping the 00:06:01.59\00:06:05.73 seventh day Sabbath in continuity from long 00:06:05.76\00:06:10.00 before the Christian era. 00:06:10.03\00:06:11.93 Somebody wrote a letter, Pastor Ross, to the U.S. 00:06:11.97\00:06:13.97 Naval Observatory, where they're, you know, they're very 00:06:14.00\00:06:16.34 particular about keeping time down to the millionth of a 00:06:16.37\00:06:20.08 second, and I'm not exaggerating. 00:06:20.11\00:06:22.94 They really do keep it to a millionth of a second. 00:06:22.98\00:06:25.78 And they said, "Has there been any change, any change in the 00:06:25.81\00:06:29.68 calendar that has affected the days of the week?" 00:06:29.72\00:06:34.22 And they said there have been, you know, several changes in the 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.06 calendar, but that never affects the days of the week. 00:06:36.09\00:06:39.29 You know, we had the Julian calendar, named for Julius 00:06:39.33\00:06:42.00 Caesar, and then we went to the Gregorian calendar, named after 00:06:42.03\00:06:45.23 Pope Gregory, and it was a change they needed to make to 00:06:45.27\00:06:47.80 adjust the seasons where because, you know, we've got 365 00:06:47.84\00:06:52.37 one-quarter days to the year, and they needed 00:06:52.41\00:06:55.11 to make that adjustment. 00:06:55.14\00:06:56.48 So they made the appropriate adjustment, and what happened 00:06:56.51\00:06:59.15 was--I think it was 1582, Thursday, 1582, October 5 was 00:06:59.18\00:07:06.09 followed by Friday, October 15. 00:07:06.12\00:07:08.89 They added ten days, but Friday followed Thursday 00:07:08.92\00:07:12.69 as it always does. 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.00 So the days of the week have not been affected by any calendar 00:07:14.03\00:07:16.13 change, and so, yeah, the U.S. 00:07:16.16\00:07:20.00 Naval Observatory said there has been no change in the calendar, 00:07:20.04\00:07:22.60 to their knowledge, that has ever affected 00:07:22.64\00:07:24.77 the continuity of the weekly cycle. 00:07:24.81\00:07:27.08 Jean: You know, Pastor Doug, you already addressed the Jewish 00:07:27.11\00:07:29.21 nation as a whole. 00:07:29.24\00:07:30.55 If you think back 2,000 years ago, Jesus was on the earth. 00:07:30.58\00:07:33.31 He knew which day was the Sabbath. 00:07:33.35\00:07:35.08 He kept the Sabbath the same day that the Jews kept as the 00:07:35.12\00:07:38.32 Sabbath, and then for 2,000 years for an entire nation to 00:07:38.35\00:07:42.72 get mixed up within the period of seven days as to which day of 00:07:42.76\00:07:46.73 the week they're on is impossible. 00:07:46.76\00:07:48.56 Doug: Yeah, it's their holy day. 00:07:48.60\00:07:50.10 And then, furthermore, in the Bible, it tells us very 00:07:50.13\00:07:52.30 specifically Jesus died on what we would call the preparation 00:07:52.33\00:07:55.64 day or Friday, the sixth day of the week. 00:07:55.67\00:07:57.77 That's why many call it Good Friday. 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.51 And then He rested in the tomb on the Sabbath. 00:08:00.54\00:08:03.51 He even kept the Sabbath in His death. 00:08:03.55\00:08:05.51 And then He rose the first day of the week, which people all 00:08:05.55\00:08:09.15 agree is Sunday morning. 00:08:09.18\00:08:11.35 So the Bible is clear. 00:08:11.39\00:08:13.29 Calendar is clear. History is clear. 00:08:13.32\00:08:15.32 You get the, you know, the Jewish nation. 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.29 There's really no question about that. 00:08:17.33\00:08:18.76 Jean: You know, we have a study guide. 00:08:18.79\00:08:20.26 It's called "The Lost Day of History." 00:08:20.30\00:08:21.66 That talks about the Sabbath. 00:08:21.70\00:08:23.10 Is it binding on Christians today? 00:08:23.13\00:08:24.43 What is its significance? 00:08:24.47\00:08:25.77 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls and asks. 00:08:25.80\00:08:27.87 Again, the study guide is called "The Lost Day of History," and 00:08:27.90\00:08:30.84 the phone number to call is 800-835-6747, or dial "#250" 00:08:30.87\00:08:36.51 on your phone. 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.85 Ask for the study guide. 00:08:37.88\00:08:39.18 It's called "The Lost Day of History." 00:08:39.21\00:08:40.75 Doug: Thank you, Dawn. Good question. 00:08:40.78\00:08:42.42 Jean: We've got Gary listening in Illinois. 00:08:42.45\00:08:43.85 Gary, welcome to the program. 00:08:43.89\00:08:45.49 Gary: Thank you. 00:08:45.52\00:08:46.82 I was hoping you can help me understand 00:08:46.86\00:08:48.29 a biblical contradiction. 00:08:48.32\00:08:50.13 In Ephesians 2:8-9, it says, "We're saved by grace through 00:08:50.16\00:08:54.63 faith, and not of ourselves. 00:08:54.66\00:08:56.16 It is a gift from God, and not of works." 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.00 But now I found a--and everybody seems to quote that one, but in 00:08:59.03\00:09:03.07 Philippians 2:12, it says, "Work out your salvation 00:09:03.10\00:09:06.91 with fear and trembling." 00:09:06.94\00:09:08.78 And so that contradicts it, and same with Revelation 22, "I come 00:09:08.81\00:09:12.78 quickly, and My reward is with Me for what you have done." 00:09:12.81\00:09:17.32 So there seems to be a contradiction. 00:09:17.35\00:09:19.35 I was hoping you could clarify that for me. 00:09:19.39\00:09:22.32 Doug: Oh, I'm so glad you asked that question because it's 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.43 a common misunderstanding, and it is very important. 00:09:24.46\00:09:27.96 Let's go back to what you read to begin with in Ephesians 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.67 chapter 2: "For by grace--" this is verse 8. 00:09:30.70\00:09:33.97 "For by grace you've been saved through faith, 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.20 that not of yourselves. 00:09:36.24\00:09:37.54 It is a gift of God, not of works, 00:09:37.57\00:09:39.74 lest anyone should boast." 00:09:39.77\00:09:41.28 And then many people stop. 00:09:41.31\00:09:42.64 Read the next verse: "For we are His workmanship, created in 00:09:42.68\00:09:47.88 Christ Jesus for good works." 00:09:47.92\00:09:50.52 So, when we are born again, we're re-created. 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.75 We are re-created for good works. 00:09:52.79\00:09:55.39 So, a Christian definitely does works, but we're not doing the 00:09:55.42\00:09:58.73 works to be saved. 00:09:58.76\00:10:00.46 We're doing the works, because we are saved. 00:10:00.50\00:10:03.53 And that is, I think, a fundamental difference. 00:10:03.57\00:10:06.30 It's so important to understand that. 00:10:06.33\00:10:08.90 God saves us by His grace. 00:10:08.94\00:10:11.11 We're not saved because we earn it by doing good works. 00:10:11.14\00:10:15.24 When we accept His salvation, which is free, then we want to 00:10:15.28\00:10:19.48 do good works because we love Him. 00:10:19.51\00:10:21.65 Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep my commandments." 00:10:21.68\00:10:23.99 Now, an example would be the thief on the cross who--well, 00:10:24.02\00:10:27.22 there are two thieves, but one turned to Jesus. 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.79 He asked for mercy, said, "Lord, remember me." 00:10:29.82\00:10:33.36 Jesus said, "You will be with Me in Paradise." 00:10:33.40\00:10:36.10 He didn't do any good works. 00:10:36.13\00:10:37.73 All he did, shortly after that, was die. 00:10:37.77\00:10:40.07 So he would--definitely was not saved by his works. 00:10:40.10\00:10:42.40 He was saved by grace. 00:10:42.44\00:10:43.74 Now, if he had come down from the cross somehow and survived, 00:10:43.77\00:10:46.07 he would have lived differently out of love 00:10:46.11\00:10:49.24 for the Lord and gratitude. 00:10:49.28\00:10:51.15 So there are definitely works in the Christian life. 00:10:51.18\00:10:53.35 Even Martin Luther said that, you know, we are not saved by 00:10:53.38\00:10:56.62 works, but we will not be saved without them. 00:10:56.65\00:11:00.26 So the saved will have works in their life. 00:11:00.29\00:11:03.19 So, hopefully, that helps. 00:11:03.22\00:11:04.56 It's a great question, Gary, and we do have a book called "Does 00:11:04.59\00:11:08.10 God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:11:08.13\00:11:10.83 Jean: And we'll be happy to send that to you, Gary, or 00:11:10.87\00:11:13.44 anyone wanting to learn more about the subject. 00:11:13.47\00:11:15.07 The book is called "Does God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:11:15.10\00:11:18.14 The number is 800-835-6747. 00:11:18.17\00:11:20.68 That is our resource phone line. 00:11:20.71\00:11:22.34 You can also just dial "#250" on your smartphone and ask for 00:11:22.38\00:11:26.01 "Does God's Grace Blot Out the Law?" 00:11:26.05\00:11:28.22 You know, Pastor Doug, James, in the book of James, says, 00:11:28.25\00:11:31.12 "Someone says, 'I have faith,'" and then he goes on to say, 00:11:31.15\00:11:36.06 "Show me your faith by your works." 00:11:36.09\00:11:38.63 So the kind of faith that saves is a working faith, a faith that 00:11:38.66\00:11:41.76 is demonstrated in the life. 00:11:41.80\00:11:43.90 We've got Jerry listening in Texas. 00:11:43.93\00:11:45.23 Jerry, welcome to the program. 00:11:45.27\00:11:47.47 Jerry: Hey, pastors. 00:11:47.50\00:11:48.80 I just wanted to get your take on this. 00:11:48.84\00:11:50.84 I had a discussion with a good friend of mine, and I told her 00:11:50.87\00:11:54.98 that there was no marriage in heaven, and she was disappointed 00:11:55.01\00:11:58.31 by it, you know? 00:11:58.35\00:11:59.65 She loves children. 00:11:59.68\00:12:00.98 Of course, in Zechariah 8:5, it says the children, the boys and 00:12:01.02\00:12:05.19 girls, will play in heaven, but what about after 1,000 years 00:12:05.22\00:12:09.02 or 1,500 years? 00:12:09.06\00:12:11.36 Doug: That's a good question. 00:12:11.39\00:12:12.69 Well, you know, God told Adam and Eve to be fruitful, and the 00:12:12.73\00:12:15.93 word He used is "to fill the earth." 00:12:15.96\00:12:17.80 I think some versions say "replenish" it. 00:12:17.83\00:12:19.67 Just, it really means "to fill the earth." 00:12:19.70\00:12:21.57 God intended to populate the world with the redeemed. 00:12:21.60\00:12:25.51 I don't think God intended for people to continue to multiply 00:12:25.54\00:12:30.05 so that the resources of the planet would be crowded out, and 00:12:30.08\00:12:33.18 everybody'd be falling' off the planet into empty space. 00:12:33.21\00:12:36.85 You know, at some point, God was going to think, "Okay, we've got 00:12:36.89\00:12:40.19 the optimum number of people to enjoy this paradise I've made, 00:12:40.22\00:12:43.76 and there'd be no more procreation," 00:12:43.79\00:12:45.63 unless He kept making new worlds. 00:12:45.66\00:12:47.83 So, we understand now that the new earth, through the plan of 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.30 salvation, will be repopulated with the redeemed, and Jesus 00:12:50.33\00:12:55.17 said the saved do not marry nor are they given in marriage, 00:12:55.20\00:12:59.74 meaning that, you know, we don't procreate. 00:12:59.77\00:13:02.31 Will there be children in heaven? 00:13:02.34\00:13:04.01 The children of all those who were saved will be resurrected 00:13:04.05\00:13:06.88 or caught up into the air as children, but they will 00:13:06.92\00:13:11.22 eventually grow up, and you read about that in Malachi chapter 4. 00:13:11.25\00:13:14.72 It says: "They will go forth and grow up as calves of the stall." 00:13:14.76\00:13:18.89 So, and I think there's that passage in Isaiah, Pastor Ross, 00:13:18.93\00:13:23.33 where it says, "And the child will die 100 years old," and 00:13:23.37\00:13:26.47 that simply means they don't even cease to be a child until 00:13:26.50\00:13:29.47 they're 100 years old, so they grow more slowly. 00:13:29.50\00:13:32.24 But you're right, after 1,000 years, you probably won't see 00:13:32.27\00:13:35.11 any new children in the kingdom. 00:13:35.14\00:13:37.78 Kind of sad to think about, but I promise, 00:13:37.81\00:13:39.88 nobody's going to ask for a refund. 00:13:39.91\00:13:41.78 I promise. 00:13:41.82\00:13:43.12 Everyone will be happy in heaven. 00:13:43.15\00:13:45.12 Thanks so much, Jerry. 00:13:45.15\00:13:46.45 Appreciate that. 00:13:46.49\00:13:47.79 Jean: Okay, very good. Thanks, Jerry. 00:13:47.82\00:13:49.59 We've got Brittany listening in California. 00:13:49.62\00:13:51.39 Brittany, welcome to the program. 00:13:51.43\00:13:54.00 Brittany: Hey--hah-hah-hah. 00:13:54.03\00:13:56.33 Doug: Hi, thanks for calling. 00:13:56.36\00:13:57.80 Brittany: Well, my question is why does Matthew 22:16, Mark 00:13:57.83\00:14:03.64 12:14, and Luke 20:21, say the exact same thing in the 00:14:03.67\00:14:09.61 beginning but different wording at the end? 00:14:09.64\00:14:14.32 Doug: In Matthew 22, verse 16--I can 00:14:14.35\00:14:18.49 only go there real quick. 00:14:18.52\00:14:19.92 I'm starting with--you've given me several verses here. 00:14:19.95\00:14:22.32 I want to start with them, one by one. 00:14:22.36\00:14:24.13 Says, "And they sent to Him their disciples with the 00:14:24.16\00:14:26.46 Herodians, saying, 'Teacher, we know that You're true, and teach 00:14:26.49\00:14:29.20 the way of God, and You don't care about anyone. 00:14:29.23\00:14:31.93 You regard no person of men. 00:14:31.97\00:14:33.64 Tell us, therefore, what do You think? 00:14:33.67\00:14:35.07 Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar?" 00:14:35.10\00:14:36.77 Is that the one you're talking about? 00:14:36.81\00:14:39.01 Brittany: Yeah, that's-- 00:14:39.04\00:14:40.51 Doug: Yeah, keep in mind that Jesus had a number of--and you 00:14:40.54\00:14:44.88 might find the wording a little different in other gospels. 00:14:44.91\00:14:47.35 Is that what you're saying? 00:14:47.38\00:14:50.42 Brittany: Yeah, I'm doing a topic study on the Christian 00:14:50.45\00:14:56.69 truth, and then I found these passages, 00:14:56.73\00:14:59.79 and it's saying the same thing. 00:14:59.83\00:15:01.16 I'm like, "What on earth is that about?" 00:15:01.20\00:15:03.10 So-- 00:15:03.13\00:15:04.60 Doug: Yeah, well, keep in mind that, first of all, Jesus 00:15:04.63\00:15:08.34 had a number of encounters with the scribes and the Pharisees 00:15:08.37\00:15:12.24 and the Herodians, and this, to me, I think, is evidence that 00:15:12.27\00:15:16.04 the wording is slightly different, then Matthew, Mark, 00:15:16.08\00:15:19.05 and Luke are not just copying each other. 00:15:19.08\00:15:21.35 They're telling the story the way the remember it, and they're 00:15:21.38\00:15:24.45 really all telling the same story, aren't they, about Him 00:15:24.49\00:15:27.42 holding up the coin and saying, "Render to Caesar the things 00:15:27.46\00:15:29.92 that are Caesar's," right? 00:15:29.96\00:15:32.76 Brittany: Yeah. 00:15:32.79\00:15:34.10 Doug: So the essence of the story and the answer and the 00:15:34.10\00:15:36.30 teaching of Christ is the same in all the stories. 00:15:36.33\00:15:39.37 The wording leading up to it may be a little different. 00:15:39.40\00:15:43.10 Another thing to keep in mind is that, as Jesus went from town to 00:15:43.14\00:15:46.68 town, some of His experiences had been repeated by others, and 00:15:46.71\00:15:54.25 so His confrontation with the scribes and the Pharisees and 00:15:54.28\00:15:58.15 Herodians may have been retold by the apostles to others, and 00:15:58.19\00:16:01.76 so you're getting them telling it from their perspectives, 00:16:01.79\00:16:05.56 and that's normal. 00:16:05.59\00:16:06.90 They're putting in their own words what happened. 00:16:06.93\00:16:08.43 They may have been very long conversations, but they're 00:16:08.46\00:16:11.33 making it very succinct. 00:16:11.37\00:16:13.77 Jean: And, again, as you mentioned, Pastor Doug, if you 00:16:13.80\00:16:15.94 look at what's actually being said, the content is the same. 00:16:15.97\00:16:19.67 The wording might be a little different, but the principle or 00:16:19.71\00:16:22.28 the point that Christ is making is clear 00:16:22.31\00:16:24.18 in all three gospel accounts. 00:16:24.21\00:16:26.28 Doug: Yeah, one more thing to remember is--and it was brought 00:16:26.31\00:16:29.18 to my attention that Jesus, He taught in Aramaic. 00:16:29.22\00:16:35.02 The scribes spoke, you know, Aramaic and pure Hebrew, and 00:16:35.06\00:16:39.86 they lived in a country that had been occupied by Greece, so many 00:16:39.89\00:16:43.53 of them understood Greek, and they were occupied by the 00:16:43.57\00:16:46.30 Romans, who spoke Latin, and so as these stories are told and 00:16:46.33\00:16:49.94 retold, the gospels are written in Greek, but Jesus didn't say 00:16:49.97\00:16:52.84 these things in Greek. 00:16:52.87\00:16:54.11 So they're translating what was said in Aramaic into Greek, and 00:16:54.14\00:16:58.58 you can choose a few different words to translate. 00:16:58.61\00:17:00.68 So that's one more reason sometimes 00:17:00.72\00:17:02.78 you'll see a little difference. 00:17:02.82\00:17:04.22 Jean: All right, that's a good point. 00:17:04.25\00:17:05.62 Next caller that we have is Tim listening in Wisconsin. 00:17:05.65\00:17:08.06 Tim, welcome to the program. 00:17:08.09\00:17:10.63 Tim: Good evening, pastors. How are you? 00:17:10.66\00:17:12.43 Doug: I'm doing great. Thank you for calling. 00:17:12.46\00:17:14.10 Tim: Excellent. 00:17:14.13\00:17:15.43 No, thank you for taking my call. 00:17:15.46\00:17:16.80 My question--I don't want it to be confusing. 00:17:16.83\00:17:21.30 In prophecy, we believe that the 70-week prophecy, the 490-year 00:17:21.34\00:17:26.84 prophecy, that was all in order from 457 B.C. 00:17:26.88\00:17:31.95 to 34 A.D., when the stoning of Stephen happened, and there's no 00:17:31.98\00:17:36.82 breaks in there, and some people believe that the last week of 00:17:36.85\00:17:39.65 the 60--or the 70-week prophecy is going to be in the future, 00:17:39.69\00:17:45.36 and we already know it's not because it's-- 00:17:45.39\00:17:47.10 it ended in 34 A.D. 00:17:47.13\00:17:49.16 Doug: Mm-hmm. 00:17:49.20\00:17:50.50 Tim: Now, my question has to do--and don't want to be 00:17:50.53\00:17:52.80 confusing, but my question has to do with Revelation chapter 00:17:52.83\00:17:57.04 16, verse 12, when the angel pours out the sixth bowl, I 00:17:57.07\00:18:02.58 believe, and the river Euphrates dries up, now, in prophecy, I'm 00:18:02.61\00:18:08.35 just having a little trouble because I want to go in order. 00:18:08.38\00:18:11.35 My mind works in order, one, two, three, four, five. 00:18:11.39\00:18:14.49 Doug: Sequentially, yeah. Tim: Thank you. 00:18:14.52\00:18:17.13 Kind of nervous. I apologize. 00:18:17.16\00:18:19.49 Doug: No, you're doing fine. 00:18:19.53\00:18:21.10 Tim: When the river Euphrates dried up when the Medo-Persians 00:18:21.13\00:18:25.23 attacked and conquered Babylon, is the river Euphrates still 00:18:25.27\00:18:30.17 going to dry up again in prophecy, according to 00:18:30.21\00:18:32.57 Revelation, or has that already happened? 00:18:32.61\00:18:35.08 And why, if we believe things, you know, in order, why would we 00:18:35.11\00:18:39.91 go back to believe that one? 00:18:39.95\00:18:41.58 I'm trying not to be confusing. 00:18:41.62\00:18:43.35 I'm just trying to figure it out. 00:18:43.39\00:18:44.92 Doug: Yeah, well, for one thing, Revelation has several 00:18:44.95\00:18:46.79 examples of history repeating itself. 00:18:46.82\00:18:48.56 You've got the plagues in the Old Testament that were literal 00:18:48.59\00:18:51.79 plagues, the blood and the frogs and the sun going dark, 00:18:51.83\00:18:56.06 so forth, the hail. 00:18:56.10\00:18:57.60 You see some of those same plagues repeated in Revelation, 00:18:57.63\00:19:00.97 so you do have history repeating itself. 00:19:01.00\00:19:03.24 The sequence isn't always the same, and the prophecies in 00:19:03.27\00:19:06.47 Revelation--I'm going to let Pastor Ross also address this 00:19:06.51\00:19:09.08 because it's, sort of, his special study. 00:19:09.11\00:19:11.28 The prophecies in Revelation are not all taking place 00:19:11.31\00:19:14.78 in sequential order. 00:19:14.82\00:19:16.65 The prophecies of Daniel and Revelation and Isaiah and 00:19:16.69\00:19:19.79 Ezekiel, they basically give a picture, then they come back, 00:19:19.82\00:19:23.39 and they show the same picture from a different angle, using 00:19:23.43\00:19:26.03 different symbols, and the time lapse may overlap a little bit 00:19:26.06\00:19:29.66 and then progress, but sometimes they back up to re-cover 00:19:29.70\00:19:32.97 something, and when it talks about the Euphrates drying up, 00:19:33.00\00:19:37.77 well, I think there's a spiritual application to that. 00:19:37.81\00:19:41.71 The Euphrates was the principal source for the water of Babylon, 00:19:41.74\00:19:46.48 and Ancient Babylon, we know, has a spiritual meaning too, and 00:19:46.51\00:19:50.82 it's going to dry up, but it is interesting the literal 00:19:50.85\00:19:53.36 Euphrates seems to be drying up also. 00:19:53.39\00:19:56.46 Jean: That's right, of course, if you look at the 00:19:56.49\00:19:58.69 context, Revelation 16, verse 12, we're talking about one of 00:19:58.73\00:20:02.50 the plagues, actually, talking about the sixth plague, and the 00:20:02.53\00:20:04.83 sixth plague sort of leads into the seventh, 00:20:04.87\00:20:07.97 which is the Second Coming of Christ. 00:20:08.00\00:20:09.90 There's some other things connected with it, but the sixth 00:20:09.94\00:20:12.11 plague prepares the way for the Second Coming of Christ. 00:20:12.14\00:20:16.24 So it's got a literal application, as you mentioned, 00:20:16.28\00:20:18.25 Pastor Doug, but there's also definitely a spiritual 00:20:18.28\00:20:20.58 application in that you have the water Euphrates. 00:20:20.62\00:20:23.59 In -- Bible prophecy, it represents people, multitudes 00:20:23.62\00:20:25.92 and nations and kins and tongues, and giving their 00:20:25.95\00:20:28.49 support to this spiritual power, called Babylon, but during the 00:20:28.52\00:20:32.49 plagues, they realized they've been deceived, and they withdraw 00:20:32.53\00:20:35.56 that support, and the drying up the river Euphrates is a 00:20:35.60\00:20:39.30 withdrawal of the support that the people gave or give to this 00:20:39.33\00:20:43.41 religious, political power at the end, and that is preparing 00:20:43.44\00:20:46.74 the way for the Second Coming of Christ. 00:20:46.78\00:20:48.74 There's also a counterfeit that takes place around that time. 00:20:48.78\00:20:52.21 It talks about three unclean spirits, like frogs, coming out 00:20:52.25\00:20:54.78 of the mouth of the dragon, out of the beast, 00:20:54.82\00:20:56.28 out of the false prophet. 00:20:56.32\00:20:57.69 This is the devil that is performing miracles just before 00:20:57.72\00:21:01.39 the Second Coming of Christ. 00:21:01.42\00:21:03.02 So there's a lot happening in this verse. 00:21:03.06\00:21:05.09 Doug: Yeah, and you actually see the drying up of the 00:21:05.13\00:21:07.10 Euphrates happening in Revelation 18, where it talks 00:21:07.13\00:21:11.20 about Babylon, and it says, "I sit as a queen, and 'No more 00:21:11.23\00:21:15.10 I'll see no sorrow,' she said. 00:21:15.14\00:21:16.91 Therefore her plagues will come in one day-- 00:21:16.94\00:21:18.67 death and mourning and famine. 00:21:18.71\00:21:20.28 And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the 00:21:20.31\00:21:23.28 Lord who judges her." 00:21:23.31\00:21:24.71 And it goes through that whole chapter and talks about how she 00:21:24.75\00:21:27.65 is drying up with--economically and socially and politically, 00:21:27.68\00:21:32.19 and, just, it shows the--basically, the decimation 00:21:32.22\00:21:35.82 of Babylon happening there. 00:21:35.86\00:21:38.26 Jean: All right, very good. Thank you, Tim. 00:21:38.29\00:21:40.13 We've got Angela listening in Illinois. 00:21:40.16\00:21:41.86 Angela, welcome to the program. 00:21:41.90\00:21:44.43 Angela: Oh, hi, Pastor Ross, and hi, Pastor Doug. 00:21:44.47\00:21:47.14 Doug: Hi. 00:21:47.17\00:21:48.47 Angela: I have a question in regards to 2 Chronicles 33. 00:21:48.50\00:21:53.24 I was reading about Manasseh, and I was just wondering, you 00:21:53.27\00:21:58.55 know, although Manasseh humbled himself, basically, reading all 00:21:58.58\00:22:02.48 of the despicable things that he did, you know, when Assyria took 00:22:02.52\00:22:08.82 him and he humbled himself and the Lord restored him, do you 00:22:08.86\00:22:13.50 think that Manasseh would be saved? 00:22:13.53\00:22:17.30 Doug: You know, it says he turned back to the Lord God, and 00:22:17.33\00:22:20.37 so assuming that that's the Holy Spirit working in his life, that 00:22:20.40\00:22:25.84 "since he repaired the altar of the Lord, he sacrificed peace 00:22:25.87\00:22:28.81 offerings and thank offerings on it," so he's claiming the mercy 00:22:28.84\00:22:31.98 of God and the blood of the lamb, "and he commanded Judah to 00:22:32.01\00:22:36.82 serve the Lord God of Israel," and this is 00:22:36.85\00:22:39.22 in 2 Chronicles 33:16. 00:22:39.25\00:22:42.29 So, and it talks about his prayer that he prayed. 00:22:42.32\00:22:44.49 There's a record of it that we don't have in the Bible, but it 00:22:44.53\00:22:46.80 mentions his prayer of repentance. 00:22:46.83\00:22:48.60 I think Hezekiah, his father, who is a good king, he's praying 00:22:48.63\00:22:53.27 for his son, before he dies, and I think God ultimately is 00:22:53.30\00:22:56.57 answering Hezekiah's prayer that Manasseh would be saved. 00:22:56.60\00:23:00.28 So I know it's despicable what he did, but God's mercy is so 00:23:00.31\00:23:05.58 great, I think He even forgave Manasseh. 00:23:05.61\00:23:09.75 Angela: Okay, thank you. 00:23:09.78\00:23:11.09 Doug: You're welcome. 00:23:11.12\00:23:12.42 Thanks so much. 00:23:12.45\00:23:13.76 Jean: Next caller that we have is Lee listening in Texas. 00:23:13.79\00:23:16.93 Lee, welcome to the program. 00:23:16.96\00:23:19.03 Lee: Yes, sir, Pastor, thank you. 00:23:19.06\00:23:20.46 Can you hear me? 00:23:20.50\00:23:21.76 Doug: Yes. 00:23:21.80\00:23:23.10 Lee: Okay, my question is "Can a person still repent 00:23:23.13\00:23:26.94 during the enforcement of the mark of the beast?" 00:23:26.97\00:23:30.74 Doug: Okay, possibly. 00:23:30.77\00:23:33.21 Now, when you say, "enforcement," once a person 00:23:33.24\00:23:35.71 receives the mark of the beast, I believe that they've grieved 00:23:35.74\00:23:38.88 away the Holy Spirit because it says that the wrath of God 00:23:38.91\00:23:42.62 abides upon them, those who receive the mark of the beast, 00:23:42.65\00:23:45.99 and you read that in Revelation 14, and, I think, a couple of 00:23:46.02\00:23:48.86 other places, but there'll be a time when the mark of the beast 00:23:48.89\00:23:53.19 is being issued, and people can still make choices, but, at some 00:23:53.23\00:23:58.50 point, the sealed are sealed, and the lost are lost, and 00:23:58.53\00:24:01.87 there's no forgiveness or repentance. 00:24:01.90\00:24:03.87 Is that your understanding? 00:24:03.91\00:24:05.21 Jean: Yeah, absolutely. 00:24:05.24\00:24:06.54 Of course, the mark of the beast issue is going to bring--it's 00:24:06.57\00:24:09.28 going to be brought before everyone, so everyone gets to 00:24:09.31\00:24:11.48 make a choice: Are they going to go along with man-made 00:24:11.51\00:24:13.35 traditions, or are they going to be obedient to the Word of God? 00:24:13.38\00:24:15.65 It's at that point, that critical point, where people are 00:24:15.68\00:24:19.25 either sealed with the seal, or they receive 00:24:19.29\00:24:21.46 the mark of the beast. 00:24:21.49\00:24:22.79 And then the Bible says probation closes, and Jesus 00:24:22.82\00:24:25.03 says, "He that is holy, let him be holy still. 00:24:25.06\00:24:27.50 He that is filthy, let him be filthy still." 00:24:27.56\00:24:29.93 Probation closes, the seven last plagues fall, and then Jesus 00:24:29.96\00:24:32.97 comes, so it's a pretty important time. 00:24:33.00\00:24:35.80 Doug: Says in Revelation 14:11, "They have no rest day or 00:24:35.84\00:24:39.11 night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives 00:24:39.14\00:24:43.18 the mark of his name." 00:24:43.21\00:24:44.78 So once they receive the mark, it seems like they settled their 00:24:44.81\00:24:48.35 decision, and they're lost for eternity. 00:24:48.38\00:24:51.39 Can we squeeze in one more before the break? 00:24:51.42\00:24:53.15 Jean: Yeah, let's try Edna in Canada. 00:24:53.19\00:24:55.02 Edna, welcome to the program. 00:24:55.06\00:24:57.46 Edna: Good evening, gentlemen. 00:24:57.49\00:24:59.13 I have a question in regards to Daniel 12:11 and 12, about the 00:24:59.16\00:25:05.07 1,290 days and the 1,335. 00:25:05.10\00:25:08.57 Where do they fit in, in this--in the prophecy? 00:25:08.60\00:25:13.81 Doug: Okay, good question. 00:25:13.84\00:25:15.14 You're asking one of the big questions on--you get more time 00:25:15.18\00:25:19.18 prophecies in Daniel 12, than anywhere else in the Bible, and 00:25:19.21\00:25:23.25 so it talks about 1,260 days, 1,335, and 1,290, 00:25:23.28\00:25:28.26 not in that order. 00:25:28.29\00:25:30.56 Daniel is dealing with a great apostasy that happens in the 00:25:30.59\00:25:34.00 church and a great persecution of God's people in a time of 00:25:34.03\00:25:37.33 trouble, and he, sort of, is summarizing what he has said 00:25:37.37\00:25:41.30 regarding these times, earlier in the book. 00:25:41.34\00:25:44.94 And do we have a study written? 00:25:44.97\00:25:48.54 I'm just wondering if we have something we can send because 00:25:48.58\00:25:51.91 it's sometimes a challenge to go through Clovis, the king of the 00:25:51.95\00:25:54.45 Franks, and the 1,335, and I don't know 00:25:54.48\00:25:57.22 if you want to take a stab at it? 00:25:57.25\00:25:58.62 Jean: Yeah, I'm just wondering, Pastor Doug, you 00:25:58.65\00:26:00.09 bring up a good point. 00:26:00.12\00:26:01.46 Maybe we do need to get a little book together because we do get 00:26:01.49\00:26:03.36 this question -- time. 00:26:03.39\00:26:04.69 Doug: We get that question a lot. 00:26:04.73\00:26:06.06 Jean: You know, historically, the conservative Bible 00:26:06.09\00:26:07.40 theologians, many of the early reformers, understood the 00:26:07.40\00:26:10.27 principle for a day equals a year, understood that these time 00:26:10.30\00:26:13.44 periods represent 1,290 years, or 1,335 years, and they've 00:26:13.47\00:26:19.94 identified a rather important date for the starting of that 00:26:19.97\00:26:22.81 has been 508, 508 A.D., when France or the Franks at the 00:26:22.84\00:26:28.25 time, the King of which was Clovis, when he converted to 00:26:28.28\00:26:30.99 Christianity and accepted Papal authority, that really opened up 00:26:31.02\00:26:36.32 for the establishment of the Papal power-- 00:26:36.36\00:26:39.16 Doug: The religious, political power. 00:26:39.19\00:26:40.73 Jean: --but throughout western Europe. 00:26:40.76\00:26:43.00 So using that as the starting date, you end up in 1798. 00:26:43.03\00:26:46.37 If you use the 1,290, and if you use the 1,335, it goes from 508 00:26:46.40\00:26:51.37 all the way up to 1843, which, if you study church history, you 00:26:51.41\00:26:56.68 realize that was a very significant time, a time of 00:26:56.71\00:26:58.85 revival, especially North America, and that was preparing 00:26:58.88\00:27:02.65 for entering into the time of judgment at the end of the -- 00:27:02.68\00:27:06.02 Doug: Church of Laodicea, which were 00:27:06.05\00:27:07.52 entered into during that time. 00:27:07.56\00:27:09.42 Well, and there's more to that. 00:27:09.46\00:27:10.69 We really need to do a study on Daniel 12, so, when people ask, 00:27:10.73\00:27:15.90 we can map it out for them because it's one of the deepest 00:27:15.93\00:27:19.10 Bible-study prophecies that's there. 00:27:19.13\00:27:22.14 Hey, friends, you hear the music. 00:27:22.17\00:27:23.47 This is halftime. 00:30:11.34\00:30:13.04 I'm glad you took my call, and my question is--I've been doing 00:30:13.07\00:30:16.81 some studying, and I've heard some pastors on some other 00:30:16.85\00:30:19.28 satellite stations that made it sound like Jesus would've come 00:30:19.31\00:30:24.62 the second time already if we would've, as His people, had our 00:30:24.65\00:30:29.46 act together and gotten a good word out, and I'm wondering if 00:30:29.49\00:30:34.76 there's any Scripture that backs that up? 00:30:34.83\00:30:37.73 Doug: Yeah, actually, I think there is. 00:30:37.77\00:30:40.40 I think you'll agree, Bradley, that the children of Israel, God 00:30:40.44\00:30:44.21 wanted to bring them into the Promised Land sooner than He 00:30:44.24\00:30:47.94 did, but because of their lack of faith, 00:30:47.98\00:30:50.55 they wandered for 40 years. 00:30:50.58\00:30:53.21 You know, Jesus says in Matthew 24:14, he said, "The Gospel of 00:30:53.25\00:30:57.22 the kingdom will go into all the world." 00:30:57.25\00:30:58.95 I think, if Christians had been more inspired and diligent to 00:30:58.99\00:31:02.89 share their faith and get the gospel out, He would've come, 00:31:02.92\00:31:06.70 and there's a verse, if you look--and this is one of several 00:31:06.73\00:31:09.10 I could probably show you. 00:31:09.13\00:31:10.53 If you look in 2 Peter chapter 3, verse 12, it says, "Looking 00:31:10.57\00:31:15.40 for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which 00:31:15.44\00:31:20.28 the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements 00:31:20.31\00:31:23.14 will melt with fervent heat?" 00:31:23.18\00:31:25.11 And he says that we should be "looking for and hastening." 00:31:25.15\00:31:28.38 So how do we hasten? 00:31:28.42\00:31:29.65 Well, it said everyone needs to hear the gospel even though they 00:31:29.68\00:31:32.12 may not all believe. 00:31:32.15\00:31:33.62 It goes out as a witness to all nations. 00:31:33.66\00:31:35.56 So, I think--and there's a lot of other verses, I think, that 00:31:35.59\00:31:40.13 imply that--I mean, God knows--He knows everything. 00:31:40.16\00:31:42.93 He knows when He's going to come. 00:31:42.96\00:31:44.33 He knew the children of Israel were going to wander 00:31:44.37\00:31:46.17 longer than they needed to. 00:31:46.20\00:31:47.60 So it's not like God's been surprised, but as far as our 00:31:47.64\00:31:51.24 responsibility, things could've happened sooner 00:31:51.27\00:31:55.08 if we had been more diligent. 00:31:55.11\00:31:58.41 Jean: All right, very good. Well, thank you, Bradley. 00:31:58.45\00:32:00.15 Good question. 00:32:00.18\00:32:01.48 We've got Ann listening in Minnesota. 00:32:01.52\00:32:02.92 Ann, welcome to the program. 00:32:02.95\00:32:05.39 Ann: Hi, Pastor, thanks for taking my call. 00:32:05.42\00:32:07.42 Doug: Thank you. 00:32:07.46\00:32:08.76 Ann: My question today is "Can the Bible be an idol?" 00:32:08.79\00:32:12.89 Doug: Well, I think so. 00:32:12.93\00:32:14.20 You know, I think some people take a big family Bible, and 00:32:14.23\00:32:16.90 they put it on the coffee table in the living room, and they'll 00:32:16.93\00:32:19.00 put flowers in it, and they'll tell everyone to, you know, dust 00:32:19.03\00:32:22.14 it, and they don't ever read it. 00:32:22.17\00:32:25.31 So it's like they've got--they say, "We've got this Holy Book," 00:32:25.34\00:32:27.84 and they might kneel in front of it and pray to it, 00:32:27.88\00:32:29.88 and you could make a Bible an idol. 00:32:29.91\00:32:32.18 Not too many people do that, but, technically, 00:32:32.21\00:32:35.22 I suppose you could. 00:32:35.25\00:32:36.55 They're not reading it and following its teaching. 00:32:36.58\00:32:38.35 It's like they're revering just the book for being a Holy Book. 00:32:38.39\00:32:42.22 Jean: Now, there is something to treating 00:32:42.26\00:32:43.59 the Bible with reverence. 00:32:43.63\00:32:44.96 Doug: Yeah, we should. 00:32:44.99\00:32:46.29 Jean: You don't just treat it like any other book. 00:32:46.33\00:32:47.60 It is the Word of God. 00:32:47.66\00:32:48.93 Doug: But we don't pray to the Bible. 00:32:48.96\00:32:50.27 Jean: No, there's no--I mean, it's the words in the book 00:32:50.30\00:32:51.87 that have the power-- 00:32:51.90\00:32:53.23 --not the book, in and of itself. 00:32:53.27\00:32:54.64 Doug: True. 00:32:54.67\00:32:56.00 Jean: Does that help, Anna--or Ann? 00:32:56.04\00:32:57.34 Ann: Yes, it does. Thank you. 00:32:57.37\00:32:58.77 Jean: All right, you're welcome. 00:32:58.81\00:33:00.18 Thanks. 00:33:00.21\00:33:01.51 We've got Grace listening in California. 00:33:01.54\00:33:02.84 Grace, welcome to the program. 00:33:02.88\00:33:04.31 Grace: Hi, Pastor Doug and Pastor Ross. 00:33:04.35\00:33:06.18 Good evening. 00:33:06.21\00:33:07.52 Doug: Evening. 00:33:07.55\00:33:09.28 Grace: My question is about is it good for a Christian to 00:33:09.32\00:33:12.72 take a student loan? 00:33:12.75\00:33:16.09 Doug: Well, the principle in the Bible, as far as possible, 00:33:16.12\00:33:20.46 we should avoid debt. 00:33:20.50\00:33:22.83 You've got examples, where it says, you know, the borrow is 00:33:22.86\00:33:25.23 servant to the lender. 00:33:25.27\00:33:27.40 There's a story in the Bible in 2 Kings chapter 4, where this 00:33:27.44\00:33:32.34 wife, she was married to one of the sons of the prophets. 00:33:32.37\00:33:35.61 Her husband takes out a loan for some land or something, and he 00:33:35.64\00:33:38.91 dies, leaving the family in debt, and the children are about 00:33:38.95\00:33:41.85 to be sold off, and she's terribly anxious and suffering 00:33:41.88\00:33:46.29 because of this debt, so, but maybe he had no choice. 00:33:46.32\00:33:51.09 Some people will never get through school or buy a home 00:33:51.13\00:33:53.63 unless they take out loans, but you don't want to borrow more 00:33:53.66\00:33:57.03 than you can really handle. 00:33:57.07\00:33:59.10 I think we saw, a few years ago, this terrible home-loan crisis 00:33:59.13\00:34:03.20 in North America. 00:34:03.24\00:34:04.77 The banks were giving away loans to people that really weren't 00:34:04.81\00:34:07.84 qualified, and then, when the market imploded, thousands, 00:34:07.88\00:34:12.95 millions of people lost their homes because they took on too 00:34:12.98\00:34:16.08 much debt, and it was very tragic. 00:34:16.12\00:34:18.35 So, you know, sometimes the only way that you're going to get 00:34:18.39\00:34:21.36 through school or get a home is to make-- 00:34:21.39\00:34:25.76 take on a responsible debt. 00:34:25.79\00:34:27.20 Just make sure you don't get in over your head or what you can 00:34:27.23\00:34:29.63 reasonably pay. 00:34:29.66\00:34:31.80 And so you need to pray about that, but it's not a sin. 00:34:31.83\00:34:35.40 Jean: You know, Pastor Doug, we also have the book written 00:34:35.44\00:34:37.87 about what the Bible has to say about debt, and we actually 00:34:37.91\00:34:41.01 advertise that book during our break with the program here, and 00:34:41.04\00:34:44.15 we'll be happy to send that to-- 00:34:44.18\00:34:46.21 Doug: Yeah, "Freedom From Debt." 00:34:46.25\00:34:47.55 Jean: --yeah, we'll be happy to send it 00:34:47.58\00:34:48.88 to anyone who calls and asks. 00:34:48.92\00:34:50.22 The number is 800-835-6747, and the book, again, 00:34:50.25\00:34:52.45 Pastor Doug, I'm looking for-- 00:34:52.49\00:34:53.79 Doug: "Freedom from Debt." Jean: "Freedom from Debt." 00:34:53.82\00:34:55.19 Doug: It may not be in our list here. 00:34:55.22\00:34:56.56 Jean: It's a newer book. 00:34:56.59\00:34:57.89 We'll be happy to send it to anyone who calls. 00:34:57.93\00:34:59.26 In Canada and the U.S., just ask for the book by name, 00:34:59.29\00:35:01.43 "Freedom from Debt." 00:35:01.46\00:35:02.76 Also, you could get the book by pressing "#250," 00:35:02.80\00:35:07.14 on your smartphone. 00:35:07.17\00:35:08.47 Say, "Bible Answers Live," and ask for the book. 00:35:08.50\00:35:10.87 Next caller that we have is Dennis listening in Oregon. 00:35:10.91\00:35:13.21 Dennis, welcome to the program. 00:35:13.24\00:35:15.44 Dennis: Hello, pastors, good evening. 00:35:15.48\00:35:18.61 Yeah, my question is--go back to the beginning here, Genesis 1, 00:35:18.65\00:35:24.92 verse 28, talks about "Go forth and multiply." 00:35:24.95\00:35:29.92 Well, my understanding is Adam and Eve only had three sons. 00:35:29.96\00:35:35.16 I wonder how this is supposed to be possible? 00:35:35.20\00:35:38.27 Doug: Well, you have to go to chapter 5. 00:35:38.30\00:35:40.04 You got your Bible in front of you? 00:35:40.07\00:35:41.90 Dennis: Yes, I do. 00:35:41.94\00:35:43.24 Doug: Okay, go to chapter 5, and it tells about the first 00:35:43.27\00:35:45.71 three sons, but there were many others. 00:35:45.74\00:35:47.88 You look in verse 4, and it says, "After he begot Seth, the 00:35:47.91\00:35:51.55 days of Adam were 800 years, and he had sons and daughters." 00:35:51.58\00:35:56.35 So, Adam and Eve, living all those years--and I'm sure they 00:35:56.38\00:35:58.82 were fertile for many years. 00:35:58.85\00:36:00.62 God told them, "Be fruitful and multiply," and she may have had 00:36:00.66\00:36:04.83 several sets of twins. 00:36:04.86\00:36:06.33 I heard, I think, the record is one woman had 69 children. 00:36:06.36\00:36:11.50 That's the record as far as I know. 00:36:11.53\00:36:12.93 It's been years ago, but I think on Mother's Day, 00:36:12.97\00:36:14.77 years ago, I did that. 00:36:14.80\00:36:16.10 One woman had 69 children, several sets of twins, I think, 00:36:16.14\00:36:19.27 one or two sets of triplets. 00:36:19.31\00:36:22.14 And Eve was probably perfectly fertile, 00:36:22.18\00:36:26.58 and they had lots of children. 00:36:26.61\00:36:28.32 It says they had sons and daughters, so it just mentions 00:36:28.35\00:36:30.69 the first three because they were the oldest boys, and they 00:36:30.72\00:36:33.72 sort of played into the story. 00:36:33.76\00:36:36.06 Jean: All right, very good. Thank you. 00:36:36.09\00:36:37.99 Next caller that we have, let's see, Ruth from Missouri. 00:36:38.03\00:36:40.30 Ruth, welcome to the program. 00:36:40.33\00:36:42.83 Ruth: Hi, good evening, pastors. 00:36:42.86\00:36:44.20 Doug: Yeah. 00:36:44.23\00:36:46.03 Ruth: According to Revelation 1:7, there is special 00:36:46.07\00:36:50.14 resurrection for the wicked. 00:36:50.17\00:36:52.24 Is there a special resurrection of the righteous, and would it 00:36:52.27\00:36:55.88 be at the same time as the special resurrection 00:36:55.91\00:36:58.18 of the wicked? 00:36:58.21\00:36:59.81 Doug: Well, there have been some righteous that have already 00:36:59.85\00:37:02.62 been specially resurrected. 00:37:02.65\00:37:04.82 Of course, the Lord performed a special resurrection for Moses. 00:37:04.85\00:37:10.63 And Moses was buried, and it says 00:37:10.66\00:37:13.90 that he evidently is in heaven. 00:37:13.93\00:37:15.43 He appears in Mark chapter 9, with Elijah. 00:37:15.46\00:37:19.23 We know Elijah wasn't raised. 00:37:19.27\00:37:20.60 He was translated as was Enoch. 00:37:20.64\00:37:23.37 And then, at the death of Christ, in Matthew 27, says, 00:37:23.41\00:37:25.97 "Many graves were opened following the earthquake when 00:37:26.01\00:37:28.98 Jesus died, and those people came out of the grave, many of 00:37:29.01\00:37:31.78 the saved around Jerusalem. 00:37:31.81\00:37:33.65 They appeared to people in the city, and they ascended to 00:37:33.68\00:37:35.62 heaven when Jesus ascended. 00:37:35.65\00:37:37.79 So that was a special resurrection for the righteous. 00:37:37.82\00:37:40.62 The rest of the righteous rise when the Lord comes. 00:37:40.66\00:37:43.12 I don't believe there's any special resurrection prior to 00:37:43.16\00:37:45.49 the Second Coming. 00:37:45.53\00:37:46.76 Some may get out of the graves a little bit prior so they can see 00:37:46.80\00:37:50.07 Him coming, but it's basically the day of His coming. 00:37:50.10\00:37:53.00 Jean: Mm-hmm. 00:37:53.03\00:37:54.57 Doug: So, and then, there's a special resurrection for the 00:37:54.60\00:37:57.14 wicked who were involved in condemning and torturing and 00:37:57.17\00:38:04.01 persecuting Jesus around the scenes of the cross. 00:38:04.05\00:38:07.08 That's what you referred to there in Revelation 1:7. 00:38:07.12\00:38:11.32 So, yeah, good question. 00:38:11.35\00:38:13.69 But the general resurrection, the dead in 00:38:13.72\00:38:15.62 the Christ rise first. 00:38:15.66\00:38:17.29 Thousand years later, all the rest of the dead, 00:38:17.33\00:38:20.20 the wicked are raised. 00:38:20.23\00:38:21.66 Jean: All right, next caller that we have, I believe, 00:38:21.70\00:38:23.00 is Giselle from Michigan. 00:38:23.03\00:38:26.40 Giselle: Thank you for taking my call. 00:38:26.43\00:38:27.77 I'm a little sick, so I hope I'm clear, but I have a question 00:38:27.80\00:38:31.57 regarding the Sabbath. 00:38:31.61\00:38:33.98 So is the Fourth Commandment, in Exodus chapter 20, regarding a 00:38:34.01\00:38:39.28 literal seven-day week, or is the Sabbath to be kept as a 00:38:39.31\00:38:42.75 Lunar Sabbath, like, on a lunar cycle, like it would--like 00:38:42.78\00:38:46.96 described in, like, Leviticus 23? 00:38:46.99\00:38:50.06 Doug: Yes, okay, a good question, and there's, you know, 00:38:50.09\00:38:54.03 there's some Sabbatarians out there that are convinced that 00:38:54.10\00:38:57.33 the Sabbath is just to be governed by the moon, but 00:38:57.37\00:39:01.44 historically, the Sabbath, it began at Creation on the seventh 00:39:01.47\00:39:05.47 day of the week, and there's a seven-day cycle that's totally 00:39:05.51\00:39:08.78 independent from the lunar cycle. 00:39:08.81\00:39:10.71 One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, the days of the 00:39:10.75\00:39:12.68 week, we still follow now, today. 00:39:12.71\00:39:15.58 It's interesting that the whole world follows the seven-day 00:39:15.62\00:39:17.69 week, and there's nothing in astronomy that would give us 00:39:17.72\00:39:20.79 that, that's, you know, reason the world has a moon was about 00:39:20.82\00:39:24.29 30 days is--a month with about 30 days is because of the moon, 00:39:24.33\00:39:28.03 and we all have a year with 365 days because of the earth's 00:39:28.06\00:39:31.47 orbit around the sun and a day with 24 hours because it rotates 00:39:31.50\00:39:35.20 in that time on its axis. 00:39:35.24\00:39:37.67 There's nothing in the sun, moon, earth, stars, that gives 00:39:37.71\00:39:39.97 us a seven-day week. 00:39:40.01\00:39:41.31 That purely comes from Creation, and the seventh-day Sabbath is 00:39:41.34\00:39:45.78 governed by just the weekly cycle 00:39:45.81\00:39:48.35 of a sequence of seven days. 00:39:48.38\00:39:50.59 Jean: And, I think, the Fourth Commandment itself makes 00:39:50.62\00:39:52.49 it very clear. 00:39:52.52\00:39:53.76 Says, "For in six days, the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the 00:39:53.79\00:39:56.73 sea, and He rested on the seventh day." 00:39:56.76\00:39:58.06 This is not talking about a monthly Sabbath, but it's 00:39:58.09\00:39:59.69 talking about a weekly Sabbath. 00:39:59.73\00:40:01.20 Doug: Yeah, and that seventh day was followed 00:40:01.23\00:40:02.76 by another first day. 00:40:02.80\00:40:04.10 Jean: That's right. 00:40:04.13\00:40:05.47 Doug: And it just kept going like that. 00:40:05.50\00:40:06.84 And you've got the Jewish nation that's kept it 00:40:06.87\00:40:08.20 that way for 3,000 years. 00:40:08.24\00:40:09.87 Jean: All right, we've got Gerald listening in Montana. 00:40:09.90\00:40:11.81 Gerald, welcome to the program. 00:40:11.84\00:40:14.54 Gerald: Good evening, Pastor. 00:40:14.58\00:40:16.18 Doug: Evening. 00:40:16.21\00:40:17.51 Gerald: I got a question. 00:40:17.55\00:40:19.51 You know, the Bible says we can eat the clean meats. 00:40:19.55\00:40:23.75 And you get into, I think, it's the 14th chapter of Samuel, and 00:40:23.79\00:40:27.99 it goes-- said that eating the blood is a sin. 00:40:28.02\00:40:33.03 Doug: Yes. 00:40:33.06\00:40:34.63 Gerald: Now, my question is this: If we consider the clean 00:40:34.66\00:40:38.53 meats today, most of it, I, myself, I grew up in a logging 00:40:38.57\00:40:45.24 camp for years, and the blood's still in the meat. 00:40:45.27\00:40:50.91 Doug: Right. 00:40:50.95\00:40:52.58 Gerald: How do we reconcile the two thoughts? 00:40:52.61\00:40:55.35 Doug: Well, you know, I can't account for what people may do. 00:40:55.38\00:40:59.55 All I can do is tell you what the Bible says, and the Bible 00:40:59.59\00:41:02.52 says, all the way from the beginning-- 00:41:02.56\00:41:04.06 this is not a Jewish law. 00:41:04.09\00:41:05.39 God even gave it to Noah. 00:41:05.43\00:41:06.73 And, everyone listening, if you didn't know this, we are all 00:41:06.76\00:41:09.66 brothers and sisters because we are all related to Noah. 00:41:09.70\00:41:12.80 And He said we're not to eat blood. 00:41:12.83\00:41:15.30 It's not only in the Old Testament. 00:41:15.34\00:41:16.77 If you look in Acts chapter 15, it says they were not, even the 00:41:16.81\00:41:20.01 Gentiles, not to eat blood. 00:41:20.04\00:41:22.18 And God clearly told people that, even when they eat the 00:41:22.21\00:41:26.35 clean animals, they were to butcher them, so they typically 00:41:26.38\00:41:29.25 cut the throat, and they would drain the blood out. 00:41:29.28\00:41:31.75 Now, that doesn't mean there would be no blood cells left in 00:41:31.79\00:41:34.39 the body because that's, you know, hard to do that, but they 00:41:34.42\00:41:37.13 were to principally drain out the blood. 00:41:37.16\00:41:39.93 Most of them, meat you buy, clean meats you buy in the 00:41:39.96\00:41:42.13 market, when they're butchered, they drain the blood out. 00:41:42.16\00:41:46.50 I don't know what happened in your logging camp, and I know 00:41:46.53\00:41:49.34 some people eat blood sausage where they don't drain the blood 00:41:49.37\00:41:52.07 out because they want it juicy but--yeah. 00:41:52.11\00:41:56.64 Disease can be transferred from animal to animal, and some 00:41:56.68\00:42:00.95 animals have disease in their blood, and by consuming that, we 00:42:00.98\00:42:04.39 can actually pick up disease from animals, 00:42:04.42\00:42:07.82 and God knew what He was saying. 00:42:07.86\00:42:09.16 He not only said that. 00:42:09.19\00:42:10.49 He said, "Don't eat the fat." 00:42:10.53\00:42:11.96 So, you know, so, I remember, as a kid, I ate a lot of steak, 00:42:11.99\00:42:14.83 and I liked that. 00:42:14.83\00:42:16.67 When people were done, I'd say, "Can I have your fat?" 00:42:16.70\00:42:19.63 I mean, it kind of grosses me out to even think about it now 00:42:19.67\00:42:22.00 but--because that's where all the toxins are stored, and God 00:42:22.04\00:42:26.14 said you shouldn't eat that. 00:42:26.17\00:42:27.48 Now people are pretty wise. 00:42:27.51\00:42:28.81 They understand cholesterol, and they say, "You know, God knew 00:42:28.84\00:42:30.55 what he was talking about. 00:42:30.58\00:42:31.88 We shouldn't be eating animal fat." 00:42:31.91\00:42:33.21 That's almost pure cholesterol. 00:42:33.25\00:42:34.62 Anyway, I hope that helps a little bit, but, yeah, try it. 00:42:34.65\00:42:38.52 You can buy meat that doesn't have the blood in it. 00:42:38.55\00:42:41.16 Clean meats, I mean. 00:42:41.19\00:42:42.56 Jean: You know, we have a study guide. 00:42:42.59\00:42:43.89 It's called "God's Free Health Plan." 00:42:43.93\00:42:45.23 Talks about what the Bible says about food 00:42:45.26\00:42:46.76 and clean and unclean meats. 00:42:46.80\00:42:48.33 The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:42:48.36\00:42:52.13 And, again, just ask for the study guide. 00:42:52.17\00:42:53.67 It's called "God's Free Health Plan." 00:42:53.70\00:42:55.14 You can also dial "#250." 00:42:55.17\00:42:57.41 Say, "Bible Answers Live," and say, "I'd like the study guide 00:42:57.44\00:43:00.84 called "God's Free Health Plan," and we'll send it to you. 00:43:00.88\00:43:04.61 We've got Israel listening in California. 00:43:04.65\00:43:06.98 Israel, welcome to the program. 00:43:07.02\00:43:10.22 Israel: Hi, thanks for taking my call. 00:43:10.25\00:43:11.99 Doug: Yeah. 00:43:12.02\00:43:13.46 Israel: My question is--it's concerning June 7 and, in 00:43:13.49\00:43:18.59 particular, the very end of it where it talks about the 00:43:18.63\00:43:21.90 punishment of eternal fire. 00:43:21.93\00:43:24.50 I was raised to, you know, believe in a literal hell, and 00:43:24.53\00:43:28.57 I'm trying to get over that, and I, just, I wondered if maybe you 00:43:28.60\00:43:31.81 could explain the, you know, the translation here in Jude 7. 00:43:31.84\00:43:37.55 Doug: Yeah, let me read the whole verse. 00:43:37.58\00:43:39.38 And Jude is calling people to repentance, and in Jude, there's 00:43:39.41\00:43:42.48 only one chapter, so it's Jude, verse 7, and it says, "As Sodom 00:43:42.52\00:43:46.89 and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in similar manner to 00:43:46.92\00:43:49.89 those, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and 00:43:49.92\00:43:53.93 going after strange flesh--" so he's--first, he puts Sodom and 00:43:53.96\00:43:58.33 Gomorrah as an example, and he says, "are an example, suffering 00:43:58.37\00:44:03.30 the vengeance of eternal fire." 00:44:03.34\00:44:05.27 Well, if you read similar verse here in Peter, it says that 00:44:05.31\00:44:08.78 Sodom and Gomorrah were turned to ashes. 00:44:08.81\00:44:11.31 They're not still burning. 00:44:11.35\00:44:12.65 So eternal fire doesn't mean it burns eternally. 00:44:12.68\00:44:15.05 Eternal fire means that what the fire did lasts forever. 00:44:15.08\00:44:19.79 Sodom and Gomorrah were never rebuilt. 00:44:19.82\00:44:22.02 The results of the fire are forever. 00:44:22.06\00:44:23.66 The wicked are consumed with eternal fire. 00:44:23.69\00:44:26.90 The result of that fire is eternal. 00:44:26.93\00:44:29.83 Jean: "Wages of Sin," the Bible says, "is death," so the 00:44:29.86\00:44:32.63 fire destroys them, and they are dead forever. 00:44:32.67\00:44:35.74 Doug: All you have to do is go to the south end of the Dead 00:44:35.77\00:44:38.24 Sea, and you can see where Sodom and Gomorrah were, 00:44:38.27\00:44:40.84 and they are not there anymore. 00:44:40.88\00:44:42.21 They're burnt up. They're gone. 00:44:42.24\00:44:44.21 Hey, thank you. Appreciate your call. 00:44:44.25\00:44:46.31 Jean: We've got Shauna listening in Washington. 00:44:46.35\00:44:47.65 Shauna, welcome to the program. 00:44:47.68\00:44:49.22 Shauna: Good evening, pastors. 00:44:49.25\00:44:50.59 Thank you. 00:44:50.62\00:44:51.95 Doug: Evening. 00:44:51.99\00:44:53.29 Shauna: My question is in Joshua chapter 7, and 00:44:53.32\00:44:55.89 specifically verses 24 and 25. 00:44:55.92\00:44:59.76 Doug: Aren't you--would you like me to read that for folks? 00:44:59.79\00:45:02.96 Shauna: Sure. 00:45:03.00\00:45:04.47 Doug: Okay, Joshua 7:24, "And Joshua, and all Israel with him, 00:45:04.50\00:45:08.47 took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the garment and 00:45:08.50\00:45:12.07 the wedge of gold, his sons and his daughters, his oxen, his 00:45:12.11\00:45:15.08 donkey, his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had, and brought 00:45:15.11\00:45:18.35 them to the valley of Achor. 00:45:18.38\00:45:20.45 And Joshua said, 'Why have you troubled us? 00:45:20.48\00:45:22.62 The Lord will trouble you this day.' So all Israel stoned him 00:45:22.65\00:45:26.35 with stones and burned them with fire after 00:45:26.39\00:45:28.96 they had stoned him with stones." 00:45:28.99\00:45:30.83 And they raise a great heap of stones on them. 00:45:30.86\00:45:32.79 So are you wondering why did the whole family die 00:45:32.83\00:45:35.13 for the sin of Achan? 00:45:35.16\00:45:37.53 Shauna: Yes, I am. 00:45:37.57\00:45:39.00 Doug: Okay, now, yeah, that's a good question. 00:45:39.03\00:45:40.60 That's why I kind of preempted it. 00:45:40.64\00:45:42.74 Well, it's understood that he hid--it says in the text he hid 00:45:42.77\00:45:47.58 the stolen objects from Jericho in the tent 00:45:47.61\00:45:50.58 under a carpet, presumably. 00:45:50.61\00:45:52.71 Everybody in the family knew. 00:45:52.75\00:45:55.15 God gave them all a chance to repent and confess 00:45:55.18\00:45:57.75 what had happened. 00:45:57.79\00:45:59.09 They had been strictly told don't take any bounty or booty 00:45:59.12\00:46:02.59 from the city of Jericho when it was destroyed. 00:46:02.62\00:46:04.93 It was all to be consecrated to the Lord. 00:46:04.96\00:46:07.23 Well, they stole, and the family conspired with him, and so not 00:46:07.23\00:46:11.77 only was the family destroyed but all their possessions, yes, 00:46:11.80\00:46:14.84 including their livestock was destroyed. 00:46:14.87\00:46:17.61 It was sort of complete annihilation of the family, and 00:46:17.64\00:46:20.91 it is--it's kind of set forth as an example of what happens in 00:46:20.94\00:46:23.85 the last days to those that turn against the Lord 00:46:23.88\00:46:28.18 and with a covetous heart. 00:46:28.22\00:46:30.19 We are lost, and we take people with us. 00:46:30.22\00:46:33.05 Achan's sin affected his family. 00:46:33.09\00:46:36.12 So I know it sounds pretty severe, but because of the sin 00:46:36.16\00:46:39.79 of Achan, several soldiers died in battle when they went against 00:46:39.83\00:46:43.23 Ai, and so he and his family had the blood of many of the other 00:46:43.26\00:46:47.97 Israelites on their hands. 00:46:48.00\00:46:50.27 Jean: All right, thank you, Shauna. 00:46:50.31\00:46:51.67 We've got Bob listening in Washington. 00:46:51.71\00:46:53.21 Bob, welcome to the program. 00:46:53.24\00:46:55.68 Bob: Hey, brothers, thank you very much. 00:46:55.71\00:46:57.68 Doug: Thanks for calling. 00:46:57.71\00:46:59.95 Bob: My question is "How should a Christian think about 00:47:00.05\00:47:03.12 UFOs and these things people see in the sky? 00:47:03.15\00:47:07.56 Could there be a connection between those UFOs and Satan?" 00:47:07.59\00:47:13.83 Doug: Could be. 00:47:13.86\00:47:15.60 I've got a good friend--he's passed away now--named Joe 00:47:15.63\00:47:18.33 Maniscalco, who actually wrote a book, an illustrated book, on 00:47:18.37\00:47:22.74 he thought a lot of the UFO sightings were satanic to get 00:47:22.77\00:47:26.94 people distracted from God and angels, and they were sort of 00:47:26.98\00:47:30.88 creating a different worldview by this. 00:47:30.91\00:47:34.62 And I don't know that. 00:47:34.65\00:47:35.95 I know that, as a pilot, I've seen a few UFOs. 00:47:35.98\00:47:39.22 Now, UFO, keep in mind, just means an "unidentified flying 00:47:39.25\00:47:42.49 object," and my wife and I tracked down a UFO once, and we 00:47:42.52\00:47:45.93 found out that it was a large metallic red balloon. 00:47:45.96\00:47:50.03 I said, "Dear, what is that? 00:47:50.07\00:47:51.37 It's a UFO." 00:47:51.40\00:47:52.70 We flew towards it, which probably isn't wise 00:47:52.73\00:47:54.04 if you think it's an alien. 00:47:54.07\00:47:56.00 And we felt so silly. 00:47:56.04\00:47:58.57 We got over there, and it was just one of these balloons. 00:47:58.61\00:48:00.51 Someone had let a big balloon go from a party, and it was just 00:48:00.54\00:48:02.91 hovering in space. 00:48:02.94\00:48:04.45 Our government shot down a balloon not long ago. 00:48:04.48\00:48:06.98 One was dangerous, and one was not, heh, so a lot of the UFOs, 00:48:07.02\00:48:11.75 I'd say, 99% of the UFOs that you hear about, if they're not 00:48:11.79\00:48:16.29 manufactured in people's imaginations, I think a lot of 00:48:16.32\00:48:18.96 them can be explained with astronomy or with 00:48:18.99\00:48:22.36 just the reflections of light. 00:48:22.40\00:48:25.17 I've seen some strange things out there, flying. 00:48:25.20\00:48:28.24 I've seen clouds, and the sun hit them, and there was one 00:48:28.27\00:48:30.27 little cloud all by itself, and I thought, for sure, 00:48:30.31\00:48:32.94 it was a UFO. 00:48:32.97\00:48:34.51 One quick story of one of my UFO stories, real quick. 00:48:34.54\00:48:37.45 I lived on a sailboat in the Mediterranean. 00:48:37.48\00:48:39.38 I was on night watch with three friends--two friends. 00:48:39.41\00:48:42.15 Three of us. 00:48:42.18\00:48:44.02 And, one night, we saw--we looked out. 00:48:44.05\00:48:45.95 While we're keeping watch, we saw a UFO coming towards us. 00:48:45.99\00:48:49.86 This UFO was shining in the night sky, and it was coming 00:48:49.89\00:48:53.46 towards our boat, and I called them over. 00:48:53.50\00:48:55.30 They looked at it. 00:48:55.33\00:48:56.63 We wondered whether we should go wake up the captain. 00:48:56.67\00:48:58.50 And then, pretty soon, we realized it was the sun rising, 00:48:58.53\00:49:01.97 and just the way that it was coming up, it looked like 00:49:02.00\00:49:04.37 a flying saucer. 00:49:04.41\00:49:05.74 There was a little spot in the clouds, but it looked like it, 00:49:05.77\00:49:08.08 and it kept getting bigger and bigger. 00:49:08.11\00:49:09.51 We thought it was coming. 00:49:09.54\00:49:11.21 So, yeah, I feel really stupid now, but you've probably 00:49:11.25\00:49:13.55 all got a laugh. 00:49:13.58\00:49:15.22 Anyway, so, yeah, you know, there are some things--the devil 00:49:15.25\00:49:19.22 could create illusions. 00:49:19.25\00:49:21.26 It's hard to know which are which. 00:49:21.29\00:49:22.92 Jean: Right, absolutely. 00:49:22.96\00:49:24.26 All right, well, thank you. 00:49:24.29\00:49:25.59 Lauren, listening in Maryland. 00:49:25.63\00:49:27.36 Lauren, welcome to the program. 00:49:27.40\00:49:29.73 Lauren: Hey, good afternoon, Pastor. 00:49:29.76\00:49:31.83 Thanks for taking my call tonight. 00:49:31.87\00:49:33.23 Doug: Yeah. 00:49:33.27\00:49:34.70 Lauren: I've learned so much from you guys. 00:49:34.74\00:49:36.81 Doug: Thank you. 00:49:36.84\00:49:38.14 Lauren: But the question I have here is, like, Genesis 1, 00:49:38.17\00:49:44.78 of 1:1-2, "In the beginning God created the heaven and earth," 00:49:44.81\00:49:50.72 and, 2, "And the earth was without form," and I was 00:49:50.75\00:49:54.72 wondering, I read Isaiah 45:18, I think, and it said that God 00:49:54.76\00:50:02.30 creates everything to be good and everything that God creates 00:50:02.33\00:50:06.17 is good, and I was wondering how the earth became void and 00:50:06.20\00:50:13.07 formless and dark, if something happened between Genesis 1 and 00:50:13.11\00:50:18.28 2, and if that had to do with the fall of Lucifer 00:50:18.31\00:50:23.08 that caused that to happen? 00:50:23.12\00:50:25.55 Doug: Okay, I think I understand your question. 00:50:25.59\00:50:28.06 Well, you may be assuming that, because the earth was without 00:50:28.09\00:50:32.26 form and void, that it was bad. 00:50:32.29\00:50:35.93 Everything God does is good. 00:50:35.96\00:50:37.40 So, when God created the material for the earth, it 00:50:37.43\00:50:42.44 doesn't mean it was bad. 00:50:42.47\00:50:43.77 It's no worse than a lump of un-shapen clay before the artist 00:50:43.81\00:50:46.94 gets ahold of it. 00:50:46.98\00:50:48.28 It's nothing bad about the clay. 00:50:48.31\00:50:49.61 It's just not been modeled yet. 00:50:49.64\00:50:52.08 And so, the world, when God made it, it didn't have the waters 00:50:52.11\00:50:55.92 separated from the waters, and it didn't--it was kind of 00:50:55.95\00:50:58.69 shapeless, and God, you know, He rolled up His sleeves and said, 00:50:58.72\00:51:02.36 "Oh, I can't wait to get to work with my material." 00:51:02.39\00:51:04.03 So it was just saying that there is this raw material He was 00:51:04.06\00:51:07.03 going to create from was there. 00:51:07.03\00:51:09.06 It wasn't bad. 00:51:09.10\00:51:10.40 Everything God does is good and even the void, earth, 00:51:10.43\00:51:13.47 was good at that point. 00:51:13.50\00:51:14.97 Jean: There was no life on the earth, just to clarify, so 00:51:15.00\00:51:17.64 it's not like God created the earth and then somehow it was 00:51:17.67\00:51:20.78 destroyed, and then He had to re-create the earth. 00:51:20.81\00:51:23.11 That was all part of the process. 00:51:23.14\00:51:24.75 Doug: Yeah, it was a great big lump of clay, so to speak, 00:51:24.78\00:51:27.32 something for Him to work with, and He took those elements and 00:51:27.35\00:51:31.72 shaped them, and that's what He did with man. 00:51:31.75\00:51:33.66 Says He took the dust, made a man out of it. 00:51:33.69\00:51:35.96 The dust wasn't bad, and He created a human from the clay. 00:51:35.99\00:51:40.90 Jean: Okay, next caller that we have, Valerie in California. 00:51:40.93\00:51:43.63 Valeria, welcome to the program. 00:51:43.67\00:51:46.13 Valerie: Hi, how are you, pastors? 00:51:46.17\00:51:47.84 Doug: Doing good. 00:51:47.87\00:51:49.17 Thank you for calling. 00:51:49.20\00:51:50.51 Valerie: Oh, thank you for taking my call. 00:51:50.54\00:51:52.24 My question is, Pastor Doug, I've heard you preach before 00:51:52.27\00:51:55.38 regarding Jesus turning water to wine, and then, as I was doing 00:51:55.41\00:52:00.72 my daily devotional on Numbers, in the book of Numbers chapter 00:52:00.75\00:52:05.39 6, and I'm focusing on verse 3, because I've never really read 00:52:05.42\00:52:10.73 the word "grape juice" in the Bible before, and here, on this 00:52:10.76\00:52:14.56 Scripture 3, it talks about wine and other fermented drink, and 00:52:14.56\00:52:20.17 it also mentions grape juice. 00:52:20.20\00:52:22.77 So my question is why wouldn't the word "grape juice" be in the 00:52:22.80\00:52:28.58 other verse where he turns water into wine? 00:52:28.61\00:52:32.45 Because that's like one of the biggest conversations I have 00:52:32.48\00:52:35.65 with people who still drink. 00:52:35.68\00:52:37.49 They say, "Well, Jesus turned the water to wine." 00:52:37.52\00:52:40.52 So I was really surprised when I read that "grape juice" word. 00:52:40.56\00:52:43.56 Doug: Can I ask you, what version of the Bible 00:52:43.59\00:52:45.49 are you reading? 00:52:45.53\00:52:47.03 Valerie: I've read it in the New King James Version because 00:52:47.10\00:52:49.60 that's my main Bible, and also, I've seen the word "grape 00:52:49.63\00:52:51.93 juice" in the NIV. 00:52:51.97\00:52:53.57 Doug: I think you'll find, though, if you look at the 00:52:53.60\00:52:56.04 original word in both the King James, New King James, the Old 00:52:56.07\00:52:59.94 Testament word there is the word "wine." 00:53:00.04\00:53:03.01 The King James translators realized that it has definitely 00:53:03.04\00:53:06.72 got to be grape juice because it's anything from the grape at 00:53:06.75\00:53:09.88 any stage, and so it says you're not even 00:53:09.92\00:53:11.95 supposed to eat a raisin. 00:53:11.99\00:53:13.36 The Nazirite was not supposed to eat anything from the vine, and 00:53:13.39\00:53:16.66 so they put the word "grape juice" in there, 00:53:16.69\00:53:19.26 but it's not in the original. 00:53:19.29\00:53:21.00 It's the same word that you're going to find used for "wine," 00:53:21.03\00:53:23.67 and in the New Testament, there's only one word for wine. 00:53:23.70\00:53:25.87 I don't think you find the word "grape juice." 00:53:25.90\00:53:27.34 It's "oinos," "oinos," I think, if I'm pronouncing that right. 00:53:27.37\00:53:31.84 So, yeah, there's not a distinction made 00:53:31.87\00:53:34.38 in the original languages. 00:53:34.41\00:53:35.71 Some translators--and they did the right thing. 00:53:35.74\00:53:37.85 When they know it's grape juice, they put grape juice. 00:53:37.88\00:53:40.62 But, I think, if you get--is it Isaiah where it says, "As the 00:53:40.65\00:53:44.49 new wine is in the cluster"? 00:53:44.52\00:53:46.15 Valerie: Yeah, I remember that Scripture too. 00:53:46.19\00:53:48.16 Doug: Yeah, well, clearly, if it's still in the cluster, it's 00:53:48.19\00:53:50.43 not fermented yet so--but it uses the same word, "wine." 00:53:50.46\00:53:55.10 So that's why Jesus, when he said, "You don't put new wine--" 00:53:55.13\00:53:59.27 new wine is grape juice--in old wineskins," but it still uses 00:53:59.30\00:54:02.40 the same word for both. 00:54:02.44\00:54:04.47 So, hey, you know, I've got a book on alcohol. 00:54:04.51\00:54:06.94 We'll send you a free copy, and it's called 00:54:06.98\00:54:09.28 "The Christian and Alcohol." 00:54:09.31\00:54:10.71 Jean: The number to call for that is 800-835-6747. 00:54:10.75\00:54:13.88 You can ask for the book. 00:54:13.92\00:54:15.22 It's called "Alcohol and the Christian." 00:54:15.25\00:54:17.39 We'll be happy to send it to anyone in Canada or the U.S., or 00:54:17.42\00:54:20.09 you can just dial "#250," and say, "Bible Answers Live," and 00:54:20.12\00:54:24.09 ask for the book "Alcohol and the Christian." 00:54:24.13\00:54:27.60 We'll be happy to send that out to anyone who calls and asks. 00:54:27.66\00:54:30.40 You know, Pastor Doug, we might want to mention, and we probably 00:54:30.43\00:54:32.83 don't have enough time to take another call, but you can email 00:54:32.87\00:54:36.57 your Bible questions to Amazing Facts simply by just emailing 00:54:36.60\00:54:40.41 it to BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:54:40.44\00:54:47.68 It's BALquestions@amazingfacts.org. 00:54:47.72\00:54:50.62 Doug: You're doing pretty good. 00:54:50.65\00:54:51.95 Pastor Ross was in Brazil two days ago. 00:54:51.99\00:54:53.79 Jean: I'm having a little jet lag here, hah-hah. 00:54:53.82\00:54:56.86 Doug: But he came in, a real trooper. 00:54:56.89\00:54:58.73 Hey, friends, we sign off in two stages. 00:54:58.76\00:55:00.83 For those that are listening on land-based stations, everyone 00:55:00.86\00:55:03.83 other than satellite, we're going to stay on and answer 00:55:03.87\00:55:06.33 rapid-fire a few Bible questions. 00:55:06.37\00:55:08.57 Don't go away. 00:55:08.60\00:55:09.90 For the rest of you, God bless till next week. 00:55:09.94\00:55:11.37 ¤¤¤ 00:55:11.57\00:55:13.98 announcer: Thank you for listening to today's broadcast. 00:55:14.01\00:55:16.51 We hope you understand your Bible even better than before. 00:55:16.54\00:55:20.42 "Bible Answers Live" is produced by Amazing Facts International, 00:55:20.45\00:55:24.55 a faith-based ministry located in Granite Bay, California. 00:55:24.59\00:55:28.69 Jean: Hello, friends, welcome back to "Bible Answers Live." 00:55:29.92\00:55:32.29 We're going to take a few moments to take your email 00:55:32.33\00:55:34.20 questions that have come in. 00:55:34.23\00:55:35.66 Well, here we go. 00:55:35.70\00:55:37.00 First question, Pastor Doug, comes from Rapha, 00:55:37.03\00:55:39.67 ten years old, from Canada. 00:55:39.70\00:55:41.07 He says, "Why is the God of Genesis so mean? 00:55:41.10\00:55:45.01 And he's not the God that I hear about in church." 00:55:45.04\00:55:48.01 Doug: Heh-heh, well, it's the same God, and you're going to 00:55:48.04\00:55:51.65 see that there are times when He deals severely with sin, not 00:55:51.68\00:55:55.92 only in the Old Testament, like Genesis, but in the New 00:55:55.95\00:55:59.25 Testament were the seven last plagues. 00:55:59.29\00:56:02.52 God destroys the world during the flood in the Old Testament. 00:56:02.56\00:56:05.73 He destroys the world with a fire in the New Testament 00:56:05.76\00:56:08.60 at the Second Coming. 00:56:08.63\00:56:10.17 And God, in the Old Testament, is a God of love and mercy. 00:56:10.20\00:56:13.44 Says He loves us with an everlasting love, and in the New 00:56:13.47\00:56:16.67 Testament, Jesus tells us God is love. 00:56:16.71\00:56:18.64 So it's the same God. 00:56:18.67\00:56:20.51 You've got both sides. 00:56:20.54\00:56:22.38 Jean: Okay, we've got another question. 00:56:22.41\00:56:24.18 Manuel asks, "When somebody dies and the breath goes back to 00:56:24.21\00:56:27.65 God, is this the breath of everyone or just the ones that 00:56:27.68\00:56:30.95 are to be saved?" 00:56:30.99\00:56:32.92 Doug: Well, you find that in Ecclesiastes chapter 7. 00:56:32.95\00:56:36.89 It says the person dies, that the body goes back to the dust, 00:56:36.93\00:56:42.63 and the spirit to God, who gave it. 00:56:42.66\00:56:45.17 And it's not just for when people die, but it says whether 00:56:45.20\00:56:48.60 it's a man or whether it's a beast, that breath of life, that 00:56:48.64\00:56:52.61 spirit--and the word "spirit" there in Hebrew is "ruach." 00:56:52.64\00:56:55.61 It just means "the breath." 00:56:55.64\00:56:57.61 It returns to God. 00:56:57.65\00:56:58.88 And so every creature in which is the breath of life, when it 00:56:58.91\00:57:02.62 dies, that breath of life goes back to God. 00:57:02.65\00:57:06.15 It's not like a little ghost from all the butterflies and 00:57:06.19\00:57:08.69 dogs and fish goes back to God. 00:57:08.72\00:57:10.89 It's just the breath of life. 00:57:10.93\00:57:12.23 It's not a conscious being because it doesn't have a body 00:57:12.26\00:57:14.40 to think in anymore. 00:57:14.46\00:57:16.36 Jean: Okay, John asks, "In Revelation chapter 1, verse 7, 00:57:16.40\00:57:18.93 it says that every eye will see Jesus. 00:57:18.97\00:57:21.87 Is this talking about the Second Coming, or is this the end of 00:57:21.90\00:57:24.37 the 1,000 years?" 00:57:24.41\00:57:26.04 Doug: Well, at the end of the 1,000 years--I'm sorry. 00:57:26.07\00:57:29.68 At the Second Coming, everybody alive on the planet will see 00:57:29.71\00:57:32.58 Jesus when He comes. 00:57:32.61\00:57:34.58 All the wicked who are raised will also see Him come. 00:57:34.62\00:57:38.45 Some who died before the Second Coming, they're going to see Him 00:57:38.49\00:57:40.99 come at the end of the 1,000 years, at that Resurrection, 00:57:41.02\00:57:43.29 coming in the New Jerusalem. 00:57:43.32\00:57:45.33 So everybody who has ever lived will, at some point in their 00:57:45.36\00:57:48.13 life, with their eyes, see the Lord come, and if they were 00:57:48.16\00:57:51.33 blind, God will give them eyes to see Him coming. 00:57:51.37\00:57:54.67 Jean: So those who are alive see Jesus at the Second Coming, 00:57:54.70\00:57:57.34 and then the wicked, well, they're resurrected at the end 00:57:57.37\00:58:00.18 of the thousand years, and they'll see the New Jerusalem as 00:58:00.21\00:58:03.21 you find described in Revelation 20. 00:58:03.24\00:58:04.98 Doug: Yeah, Christ is coming in glory there 00:58:05.01\00:58:06.35 with the New Jerusalem. 00:58:06.38\00:58:07.88 Hey, friends, that's all we have time for now. 00:58:07.92\00:58:09.78 We thank you so much for your Bible questions. 00:58:09.82\00:58:11.85 We look forward to hearing from you again next week. 00:58:11.89\00:58:14.62 God bless, and send us your questions, or go to 00:58:14.66\00:58:16.52 AmazingFacts.org, to learn more about the ministry. 00:58:16.56\00:58:20.86 ¤¤¤ 00:58:21.06\00:58:22.63 announcer: "Bible Answers Live," honest and accurate answers 00:58:22.66\00:58:25.63 to your Bible questions. 00:58:25.67\00:58:28.17 ¤¤¤ 00:58:28.20\00:58:29.70
