Welcome back. We have been studying in the book of Acts and 00:00:01.86\00:00:05.09 right before our break we were looking at how Paul, on his way 00:00:05.12\00:00:08.50 to Rome, has been in a shipwreck with the rest of the prisoners 00:00:08.54\00:00:12.55 there and they actually came near land. They're in a storm, 00:00:12.59\00:00:15.61 they've been in a storm for 14 days. They haven't eaten 00:00:15.65\00:00:18.60 anything and they're looking for an opportunity to land the ship. 00:00:18.64\00:00:21.24 They realize they're probably going to lose the ship. But now 00:00:21.28\00:00:24.10 they're concerned about the ship breaking up on the rocks, so 00:00:24.14\00:00:26.86 they're waiting for daylight. Now the Bible says in verse 39 00:00:26.89\00:00:30.73 of Acts 27, When it was day they did not recognize the land, but 00:00:30.77\00:00:34.36 they observed a bay with a beach onto which they planned to run 00:00:34.40\00:00:37.63 the ship if possible. So it goes on to tell us they dropped 00:00:37.67\00:00:40.54 anchors. They ended up running the ship aground and it tells 00:00:40.57\00:00:44.42 us in verse 42, the soldiers plan was to kill the prisoners 00:00:44.46\00:00:47.84 lest any of them should swim away and escape. And you recall 00:00:47.88\00:00:51.30 from earlier in our study in the book of Acts that if the Roman 00:00:51.33\00:00:54.58 soldiers allowed the prisoners to escape it was at the peril of 00:00:54.62\00:00:57.42 their own life. So they were just going to go ahead and kill 00:00:57.45\00:01:00.22 the prisoners because they didn't know how they could 00:01:00.25\00:01:02.46 retain them. But it says here, verse 43, that the centurion 00:01:02.50\00:01:06.39 wanting to save Paul kept them from their purpose and commanded 00:01:06.42\00:01:09.89 that those who could swim should jump overboard first and get to 00:01:09.93\00:01:13.05 land. Others took pieces of the boat and what have you and the 00:01:13.08\00:01:17.11 Bible says they all escaped safely to land on the island of 00:01:17.14\00:01:21.14 Malta. Powerful. So I wonder if the 00:01:21.17\00:01:22.81 reason that they stopped was in part they were thankful to Paul 00:01:22.85\00:01:27.14 for the fact that his God had ultimately delivered them. 00:01:27.17\00:01:32.32 Well we go to chapter 28. We pick up there. It says, Now when 00:01:32.36\00:01:35.78 they had escaped they then found out that the island was called 00:01:35.82\00:01:39.21 Malta and the natives showed us unusual kindness for they 00:01:39.24\00:01:43.38 kindled a fire and made us all welcome because of the rain that 00:01:43.42\00:01:46.35 was falling and because of the cold. But when Paul had gathered 00:01:46.39\00:01:49.98 a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire a viper came out 00:01:50.01\00:01:53.56 because of the head and fastened on his hand. Now this is 00:01:53.60\00:01:57.08 fascinating. A viper comes out and bites him on the hand but he 00:01:57.12\00:01:59.73 doesn't just bite him. In verse 4 it says, So when the natives 00:01:59.76\00:02:02.87 saw the creature hanging from his hand (so now it's holding on 00:02:02.90\00:02:06.38 to him) they said to one another Oh no doubt this man is a 00:02:06.42\00:02:09.43 murderer whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice 00:02:09.47\00:02:12.41 does not allow to live. They're thinking this is like bad karma 00:02:12.45\00:02:16.02 right? He's now going to receive his just due. 00:02:16.05\00:02:18.35 They're counting the steps to see when he's going to drop. 00:02:18.39\00:02:21.01 That's right. And in verse 5 it says, But he shook of the 00:02:21.05\00:02:24.07 creature into the fire and suffered no harm. However, they 00:02:24.11\00:02:26.84 were expecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down 00:02:26.87\00:02:30.17 dead. But after they had looked for a long time (so they're 00:02:30.20\00:02:33.45 watching intently and nothing's happening) and saw no harm 00:02:33.49\00:02:36.37 come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a 00:02:36.40\00:02:39.15 god. So that's interesting. They went from thinking that he was 00:02:39.18\00:02:41.90 the worst of criminals to a god because they simply didn't 00:02:41.93\00:02:45.62 understand the power of the true God. 00:02:45.65\00:02:47.30 You know, I kind of think, Jim, about the hand being in the 00:02:47.34\00:02:50.42 Bible often times as what we do things with and it's almost a 00:02:50.46\00:02:53.46 picture story here where the serpent, the old devil, bites 00:02:53.49\00:02:57.03 the hand of the church and tries to hinder the working of the 00:02:57.07\00:03:00.58 gospel. But you know what? The Lord Jesus promised his 00:03:00.61\00:03:03.68 disciples in Mark 16 that they'd be bitten by serpents and the 00:03:03.72\00:03:07.26 serpents wouldn't have power over them. Here we see that 00:03:07.29\00:03:09.99 promise being fulfilled. Well we see Paul going on here to 00:03:10.03\00:03:12.50 minister a little bit to the people of Malta. There was a 00:03:12.53\00:03:14.93 leading citizen named Publius and his father was sick and Paul 00:03:14.97\00:03:19.46 the Bible says, went in to him, in verse 8, laid his hands on 00:03:19.49\00:03:23.18 him and healed him and you can imaging the island now starts to 00:03:23.21\00:03:26.83 bring all their sick people to Paul and Paul heals them all as 00:03:26.86\00:03:30.00 they come and of course that gained a lot of influence there 00:03:30.04\00:03:33.21 for the Apostle Paul and an opportunity for him to share 00:03:33.24\00:03:36.38 with them. That's right. Well you come down 00:03:36.41\00:03:38.85 to verse 11 and it says, after three months (so this is three 00:03:38.89\00:03:43.54 months after the ship wreck) we sailed on an Alexandrian ship 00:03:43.58\00:03:47.47 whose figurehead was the Twin Brothers which had wintered at 00:03:47.51\00:03:50.81 the island and landing at Syracuse we stayed three days. 00:03:50.84\00:03:54.28 From there we circled around and reached Rhegium and after 00:03:54.31\00:03:57.68 one day the south wind blew and the next day we came to Puteoli 00:03:57.72\00:04:02.12 where we found brethren and were invited to stay with them seven 00:04:02.15\00:04:05.26 days. So this is interesting. They come to this little island 00:04:05.30\00:04:09.88 near to Rome and there are brethren there. So you can only 00:04:09.92\00:04:14.40 imagine that perhaps from Pentecost and all the people 00:04:14.43\00:04:18.55 came from so many different places or somehow the word had 00:04:18.59\00:04:22.68 spread. That had to be encouraging. 00:04:22.71\00:04:24.26 Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. And they've got to be thinking 00:04:24.30\00:04:27.14 wow this word is spreading. It's going to places that Paul 00:04:27.17\00:04:30.34 himself has not been. And that's the way that the gospel moved 00:04:30.37\00:04:34.79 in the days of the early church. So it says in the next part, We 00:04:34.82\00:04:38.39 found brethren (and were invited to stay seven days) and so we 00:04:38.43\00:04:41.96 went toward Rome. Verse 15 says, And from there when the brethren 00:04:42.00\00:04:45.59 heard about us they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and 00:04:45.63\00:04:49.16 Three Inns. When Paul saw them he thanked God and took courage. 00:04:49.19\00:04:52.56 So now the brethren from Rome have come to meet Paul so now 00:04:52.59\00:04:55.93 he's getting close. He's there speaking to some of the 00:04:55.96\00:04:58.90 believers in Christ from Rome. And in verse 16 it says, they 00:04:58.94\00:05:02.12 came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the 00:05:02.16\00:05:05.27 captain of the guard. Paul was permitted to dwell there. Now in 00:05:05.31\00:05:08.82 verse 17 it begins to talk about Paul ministering to some of the 00:05:08.86\00:05:12.34 Jews in Rome. It says, And it came to pass after three days 00:05:12.37\00:05:15.27 that Paul called the leaders of the Jews together. This is 00:05:15.31\00:05:19.23 fascinating. Paul didn't just talk to those believers there, 00:05:19.26\00:05:23.08 those who believed in Christ, but he had an opportunity here 00:05:23.11\00:05:26.51 and wanted to meet with the Jews so that he could have a chance 00:05:26.55\00:05:30.02 to share Christ with them even though he was still in one sense 00:05:30.05\00:05:33.85 or another bound or a prisoner. It says, Paul called the leaders 00:05:33.89\00:05:37.66 of the Jews together and so when they had come together he 00:05:37.69\00:05:40.60 said to them. Men and brethren, though I have done nothing 00:05:40.63\00:05:43.60 against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I 00:05:43.64\00:05:46.54 was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the 00:05:46.58\00:05:49.23 Romans who, when they had examined me, wanted to let me go 00:05:49.26\00:05:52.23 because there was no cause for putting me to death. But when 00:05:52.26\00:05:55.19 the Jews spoke against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, 00:05:55.22\00:05:58.26 not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation. For this 00:05:58.30\00:06:01.37 reason, therefore, I have called for you to see you and speak 00:06:01.40\00:06:04.60 with you because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.82 chain. The hope of Israel, the hope of the Messiah. Then they 00:06:07.85\00:06:11.09 said to him, we neither received letters from Judea concerning 00:06:11.13\00:06:14.21 you nor have any of the brethren who came reported or spoken any 00:06:14.25\00:06:18.67 evil of you. So apparently you can imagine that as difficult 00:06:18.71\00:06:22.37 as it was for Paul to get to Rome that there was no other 00:06:22.41\00:06:25.55 report that had come to Rome yet and we don't really see any 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.64 evidence that there was a report that ever came to Rome warning 00:06:28.68\00:06:32.29 the Jews there and so they had a certain sense of openness. 00:06:32.33\00:06:35.91 It says in verse 22, But we desire to hear from you. 00:06:35.94\00:06:39.35 That's a wonderful thing when somebody says that when you want 00:06:39.38\00:06:42.39 to share the gospel with them. To hear from you what you think 00:06:42.42\00:06:45.75 for concerning this sect, we know that it is spoken against 00:06:45.79\00:06:49.09 everywhere. Now it's interesting. They had 00:06:49.12\00:06:51.00 not heard of Paul like you said but they certainly heard about 00:06:51.03\00:06:53.75 this sect, The Way. You know what it makes me think 00:06:53.79\00:06:57.71 is sometimes as a Seventh-day Adventist I recognize that you 00:06:57.74\00:07:03.60 can't totally remove people's prejudices when they hear 00:07:03.64\00:07:06.48 hear certain things that they don't understand about your 00:07:06.51\00:07:09.48 faith and your beliefs. And sometimes we get worried about 00:07:09.52\00:07:12.13 that, but you know what they had that in the Christian 00:07:12.17\00:07:14.92 church. Everywhere they went there was prejudice against 00:07:14.96\00:07:17.67 their message. So we need to understand... 00:07:17.71\00:07:20.03 You would expect there would be because the enemy hates the 00:07:20.07\00:07:23.27 truth. Exactly. We understand that 00:07:23.31\00:07:25.09 God's in charge and that God ultimately will use the power of 00:07:25.12\00:07:28.54 the truth to convict people's hearts even when he has to work 00:07:28.58\00:07:31.97 past prejudice. That's right. Well Paul had the 00:07:32.01\00:07:34.95 opportunity. Evidently he was able to entertain guests. 00:07:34.98\00:07:39.29 It says in verse 23, When they had appointed him a day many 00:07:39.33\00:07:43.39 came to him at his lodging to whom he explained and solemnly 00:07:43.42\00:07:46.93 testified of the kingdom of God persuading them concerning Jesus 00:07:46.97\00:07:50.44 from both the law of Moses and the prophets from 00:07:50.48\00:07:53.66 morning till evening (we've seen that before) reasoning from the 00:07:53.69\00:07:56.23 scriptures. And it says ultimately some were persuaded 00:07:56.27\00:07:59.54 and some disbelieved, in verse 24. And then Paul leaves these 00:07:59.58\00:08:03.59 words with the Jews. 00:08:03.62\00:08:04.65 He actually quotes from Isaiah and he says in verse 26, Go to 00:08:04.68\00:08:07.20 to this people and say, Hearing you will hear and shall not 00:08:07.23\00:08:10.57 understand, and seeing you will see and not perceive, for the 00:08:10.60\00:08:13.64 hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard 00:08:13.68\00:08:16.64 of hearing and their eyes they have closed lest they should see 00:08:16.68\00:08:20.76 with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should 00:08:20.79\00:08:24.49 understand with their hearts and turn so that I should heal them. 00:08:24.53\00:08:28.92 Wow! What a powerful testimony. And he says, Therefore, let it 00:08:28.95\00:08:33.31 be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent 00:08:33.35\00:08:36.59 to the Gentiles and they will hear it. And it goes on to tell 00:08:36.62\00:08:39.97 us there as the book closes, When he had said these words 00:08:40.00\00:08:43.16 the Jews departed and had a great dispute. Then Paul dwelt 00:08:43.20\00:08:45.96 two whole years in his own rented house and received all 00:08:46.00\00:08:48.69 who came to him preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the 00:08:48.72\00:08:51.69 things which concerned the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence 00:08:51.73\00:08:54.85 no one forbidding him. Now it's interesting here that we know 00:08:54.88\00:08:58.19 the Apostle Paul died as a martyr under Nero. So did Peter 00:08:58.23\00:09:01.55 but Luke doesn't see fit to record it. He leaves the ending 00:09:01.59\00:09:04.88 open. That's right. I mean I almost 00:09:04.91\00:09:06.17 fell like I need to turn the page and look at chapter 29 and 00:09:06.20\00:09:09.65 it's not there. There's nothing left after that. It seems to end 00:09:09.69\00:09:13.11 abruptly or not end. Yeah, or maybe it's an open ending. 00:09:13.15\00:09:18.61 It makes me think back to our beginning actually when we first 00:09:18.65\00:09:22.81 spoke about our introduction to the book of Acts and we talked 00:09:22.84\00:09:26.71 about at the end of Luke the commission that the Lord Jesus 00:09:26.74\00:09:30.56 gave, those motivating factors that he gave to the church. 00:09:30.60\00:09:34.35 He opened the scriptures to them and gave them the clear evidence 00:09:34.39\00:09:37.31 of faith in the scripture and then he gave them the great 00:09:37.35\00:09:40.86 commission. And he said, you need to take this scripture 00:09:40.90\00:09:44.35 this message that I've entrusted to you and you need to take it 00:09:44.38\00:09:48.83 to the whole world. As I think about that, I think WOW. What's 00:09:48.87\00:09:53.75 really happening here is this is a mission that doesn't end 00:09:53.78\00:09:57.87 because as long as life lasts the book of Acts is still being 00:09:57.90\00:10:01.41 written. I think back to that statement from the book The 00:10:01.45\00:10:04.88 Great Controversy that we were talking about in that very first 00:10:04.92\00:10:09.49 program that we had when it says that at the end of time before 00:10:09.53\00:10:13.39 the final judgments of God fall upon the earth, there will be 00:10:13.42\00:10:17.74 a revival of such primitive godliness as has not been seen 00:10:17.78\00:10:22.02 since apostolic times; that has not been seen since the book of 00:10:22.06\00:10:26.54 Acts. We understand that there will be another continuance of 00:10:26.57\00:10:31.02 the book of Acts in our day. 00:10:31.06\00:10:33.04 That's right and it makes me think, Jim, have you ever run a 00:10:33.08\00:10:36.49 relay race where you've got that baton and one person hands it 00:10:36.53\00:10:40.00 to the next person and hands it to the next person. And when 00:10:40.04\00:10:43.09 that person who runs to you hands you the baton, that baton 00:10:43.12\00:10:46.46 is in your hands, I can't help but think to myself of the 00:10:46.49\00:10:49.75 faithful men and women in the book of Acts. All the trial, all 00:10:49.79\00:10:53.40 the suffering, everything they risked for the gospel and then 00:10:53.43\00:10:56.82 we come to the end of the book and they hand that baton to you 00:10:56.85\00:11:00.92 and me. I wonder to myself, what would the Apostle Paul say today 00:11:00.95\00:11:04.51 if he were to look at the church who's received the baton and 00:11:04.55\00:11:08.09 what we're doing with it. I can't help but think at least 00:11:08.12\00:11:11.05 in part that we have not done everything that we could be 00:11:11.08\00:11:13.94 doing with the gospel message. That we need to be stirred with 00:11:13.97\00:11:17.55 that spirit of revival to carry the gospel forward. 00:11:17.58\00:11:20.90 You know, the book of Acts is entitled Acts, but in most of 00:11:20.94\00:11:25.52 our Bibles it says the Acts of the Apostles. But you know I 00:11:25.55\00:11:30.20 wonder as we look at that title if we shouldn't be renaming it. 00:11:30.23\00:11:34.46 Our viewers may want to put their name there. Maybe I should 00:11:34.50\00:11:39.06 be asking myself, What are the Acts of Jim Howard? What are the 00:11:39.09\00:11:43.92 Acts of Mark Howard. Really the Holy Spirit, while he was active 00:11:43.95\00:11:48.90 in the book of Acts the needful component that made the book 00:11:48.94\00:11:53.61 of Acts possible was willing hearts and willing messengers. 00:11:53.65\00:11:57.88 And we found that in the early apostles. They showed us what 00:11:57.92\00:12:01.78 it means to sacrifice. They showed us what it means to have 00:12:01.82\00:12:07.35 boldness. They were not in any way afraid of the opposition 00:12:07.38\00:12:11.89 they received in their day. Nothing whether it was beatings 00:12:11.92\00:12:15.71 or scourgings or anything would keep them from carrying out the 00:12:15.75\00:12:19.50 mission. But how do we feel about the mission that Christ 00:12:19.54\00:12:22.69 has given us? Are we as serious about carrying it to the world 00:12:22.72\00:12:26.63 as they were in the book of Acts? I want to invite you today 00:12:26.66\00:12:30.53 to accept the challenge of rewriting, or should I say, 00:12:30.56\00:12:34.22 writing the last chapter of the book of Acts. Thank you for 00:12:34.25\00:12:38.31 joining us on Books of the Book. 00:12:38.35\00:12:40.08
