Welcome to Books of the Book. I'm Pastor Mark Howard. I'm here 00:00:22.34\00:00:25.67 with my co-host, my brother, Pastor Jim Howard. I'm glad you 00:00:25.71\00:00:29.00 have joined us for our study in the book of Acts. This has been 00:00:29.04\00:00:33.11 an exciting study and it will continue as we're going to see 00:00:33.14\00:00:36.47 as we go through today's study. We're going to start in Acts 00:00:36.51\00:00:40.08 chapter 27. Before we do that we're going to ask the Lord to 00:00:40.12\00:00:43.40 bless our time as we study his word. I'd invite our viewers to 00:00:43.43\00:00:46.68 bow their heads with us as we pray. 00:00:46.71\00:00:47.86 Father in heaven, we thank you so much for the Holy Spirit to 00:00:47.90\00:00:51.86 guide us into truth and to change our hearts and transform 00:00:51.90\00:00:55.79 our hearts. We thank you, Lord, for the testimony we see in the 00:00:55.83\00:00:59.44 book of Acts of the power that you have worked in your church 00:00:59.48\00:01:03.06 in times past and that same power that's available for us 00:01:03.09\00:01:07.57 today as we seek to spread the gospel, the good news of Jesus 00:01:07.60\00:01:11.47 Christ. Father bless our time now in study, we ask in Jesus' 00:01:11.51\00:01:15.35 name, Amen. Now, Jim, we finished up last 00:01:15.38\00:01:19.22 time in chapter 26. Paul was there appearing before Festus 00:01:19.26\00:01:24.93 and Agrippa, King Agrippa, and now he's heading on to Rome. 00:01:24.97\00:01:29.50 Of course, this has been in process for a little bit of time 00:01:29.53\00:01:34.09 as he's appealed to Caesar. So we're picking up in chapter 27 00:01:34.13\00:01:38.21 of Acts, verse 1. The Bible tells us here that when it was 00:01:38.25\00:01:42.26 decided that they should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and 00:01:42.30\00:01:45.84 some other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of the 00:01:45.88\00:01:50.07 Augustan regiment. It tells us in verse 3 that Julius treated 00:01:50.11\00:01:54.53 Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to his friends and receive 00:01:54.56\00:01:58.95 care. So Paul had a little bit of liberty there under Julius 00:01:58.98\00:02:02.11 and the next few verses just tell us how they went from one 00:02:02.14\00:02:05.45 place to another getting ready to get on the right ship to take 00:02:05.49\00:02:08.77 them to Rome. That's right. You know, this is 00:02:08.80\00:02:11.64 amazing that it's even gotten to this point; just thinking 00:02:11.68\00:02:17.02 back to where we've come from. First the apostle comes into 00:02:17.06\00:02:20.87 Jerusalem and thinks he has an opportunity to witness to the 00:02:20.90\00:02:24.71 Jews and from the very start he goes into the temple and they 00:02:24.75\00:02:28.53 begin to accuse him of things, pull him out, beat him. 00:02:28.56\00:02:32.86 Then immediately he's brought before the commander there and 00:02:32.90\00:02:38.11 after the commander he is passed along to Felix and then Felix 00:02:38.15\00:02:42.49 holds onto him for a couple of years and then he's passed along 00:02:42.53\00:02:46.75 to his successor Festus. Then Agrippa comes to visit Festus 00:02:46.79\00:02:50.54 and he has to stand before Agrippa. It's just amazing to me 00:02:50.58\00:02:54.99 that so much time has gone on and it seems like such an easy 00:02:55.02\00:02:59.40 case. You know, Jim, it reminds me of 00:02:59.43\00:03:00.98 what Paul writes in II Corinthians chapter 11 00:03:01.02\00:03:03.77 talking about some of his experience. He says in verse 23 00:03:03.81\00:03:08.61 Are they ministers of Christ. I speak as a fool. I am more. In 00:03:08.65\00:03:12.44 labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, (that is being 00:03:12.47\00:03:16.23 beaten), in prison more frequently, in deaths often, 00:03:16.26\00:03:20.15 from the Jews five time I received 40 stripes minus one 00:03:20.19\00:03:24.01 (which was the most beating they could give a person, the most 00:03:24.05\00:03:27.38 stripes). Verse 25 it says, Three times I was beaten with 00:03:27.41\00:03:32.71 rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night 00:03:32.75\00:03:36.12 and a day I have been in the deep, in journeys often, in 00:03:36.15\00:03:38.45 perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own 00:03:38.49\00:03:40.80 countrymen and perils of the Gentiles and perils of the city 00:03:40.84\00:03:43.28 and perils of the wilderness and perils of the sea and perils 00:03:43.31\00:03:45.72 among false brethren and weariness and toil and 00:03:45.75\00:03:47.92 sleeplessness often and hunger and thirst and fastings... 00:03:47.96\00:03:51.59 Seems like it will never end. That's what it's been like as 00:03:51.63\00:03:54.84 we've gone from trial to trial, from city to city, uprising 00:03:54.87\00:03:57.86 after uprising. It's amazing he's still alive. And here we 00:03:57.89\00:04:00.59 are coming to the end of the book of Acts and he's on his 00:04:00.62\00:04:03.85 journey to Rome and here's one of these shipwrecks that he 00:04:03.89\00:04:06.93 refers to that we're getting ready to dive into. So in verse 00:04:06.96\00:04:09.97 9 it says, Now when much time had been spent and sailing was 00:04:10.00\00:04:13.13 now dangerous because the fast was already over (this was 00:04:13.16\00:04:15.86 speaking about the day of atonement, which would happen in 00:04:15.90\00:04:18.82 the fall so it was probably around October time when the 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.70 waters would begin to get rough. There were potential storms that 00:04:21.74\00:04:24.96 would come through) Paul advised them saying Men I perceive that 00:04:24.99\00:04:28.18 this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only 00:04:28.21\00:04:32.07 of the cargo and ship but also our lives. So Paul is here 00:04:32.11\00:04:36.68 saying I don't think it's a good idea for us to go now. As we 00:04:36.71\00:04:41.25 look at this, he says, I perceive. We need to recognize 00:04:41.28\00:04:43.97 that Paul is not here prophesying per se because 00:04:44.00\00:04:46.95 ultimately we'll find out that no lives are lost, but he is 00:04:46.99\00:04:51.51 a very well-traveled man and he's got a pretty good idea of 00:04:51.54\00:04:55.46 what is about to come. Unfortunately he wasn't listened 00:04:55.50\00:04:59.35 to. Why are they going to listen to this Jewish sect rabbi here. 00:04:59.39\00:05:04.26 Instead the centurion was persuaded, says in verse 11, by 00:05:04.29\00:05:07.08 the helmsman and the owner of the ship more than the things 00:05:07.11\00:05:09.87 spoken by Paul. Because the harbor was not suitable to 00:05:09.90\00:05:13.22 winter in, the majority also advised them to set sail. 00:05:13.26\00:05:16.51 So they decided we're going to go ahead and go. And in verse 13 00:05:16.55\00:05:20.74 it says, When the south wind blew softly supposing that they 00:05:20.78\00:05:25.25 had obtained their desire, they put out to sea. And back earlier 00:05:25.29\00:05:29.73 it said something about the winds and that slowed them down 00:05:29.76\00:05:35.98 so now they're saying they've found their desire. They are now 00:05:36.01\00:05:41.63 ready. The winds are favorable. But unfortunately not long after 00:05:41.66\00:05:46.79 that it says but not long after, verse 14, a tempestuous head 00:05:46.82\00:05:52.44 wind arose called Euroclydon. So apparently they're naming 00:05:52.48\00:05:56.72 these storms similar, I suppose, to how we name hurricanes and 00:05:56.76\00:06:01.48 such today and this is bad news. From here things start to go 00:06:01.51\00:06:06.53 downhill. The next thing that we see happen is there's the need 00:06:06.56\00:06:11.09 to pull the lifeboat that's been trailing behind and hoist it 00:06:11.12\00:06:15.49 onto the ship. Then after that they have to take cables of 00:06:15.52\00:06:19.74 ropes and they end up tightening up or wrapping up around the 00:06:19.77\00:06:23.69 hull of the ship, around the outer shell of the ship. Then 00:06:23.72\00:06:27.57 they find that they still are in trouble so they start throwing 00:06:27.61\00:06:30.31 cargo overboard the ship. And when that isn't enough, 00:06:30.34\00:06:35.38 lightening the load that way, it says in verse 19, On the third 00:06:35.42\00:06:39.92 day we threw the ship's tackle overboard. So things are not 00:06:39.96\00:06:44.25 going well on this trip, one thing after the other, and it 00:06:44.29\00:06:48.55 looks like they're headed for disaster. 00:06:48.58\00:06:50.54 Yeah, absolutely. In fact, it continues on. It's not getting 00:06:50.58\00:06:54.22 any better. If we come to verse 20 Luke writes now when 00:06:54.25\00:06:57.86 neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and no small 00:06:57.89\00:07:01.50 tempest beat on us (that's Luke's way of saying it was a 00:07:01.53\00:07:05.39 big storm, no break in the clouds, no break in the storm) 00:07:05.42\00:07:09.21 he says, All hope that we would be saved was finally given up. 00:07:09.25\00:07:14.16 And this is Luke writing now. It's not just the people in the 00:07:14.19\00:07:16.78 ship but it just didn't look like we were going to make it. 00:07:16.82\00:07:21.75 It's interesting that at this time period Paul addresses those 00:07:21.78\00:07:26.04 on the ship. Verse 22, he says, Now I urge you to take heart 00:07:26.08\00:07:30.44 for there will be no loss of life among you but only of the 00:07:30.48\00:07:34.53 ship. For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to 00:07:34.57\00:07:38.73 whom I belong and whom I serve. I love the way Paul brings that 00:07:38.77\00:07:43.17 out, the God to whom I belong. Let me ask you viewer. Do you 00:07:43.21\00:07:47.98 belong to the Lord Jesus. You know he has purchased us and he 00:07:48.01\00:07:52.52 has purchased us with an infinite price, the price of his 00:07:52.56\00:07:57.00 own precious blood and we are a blood-bought possession. We need 00:07:57.04\00:08:00.92 to acknowledge that. Paul acknowledged that. The God to 00:08:00.95\00:08:04.47 whom I belong and whom I serve. 00:08:04.50\00:08:07.30 You get the sense when he says to whom I belong that he has a 00:08:07.34\00:08:12.67 debt that he owes. He doesn't belong to himself. He is totally 00:08:12.71\00:08:18.01 at the service of his master. 00:08:18.04\00:08:20.60 That's right. Another thing it makes me think of is the Lord 00:08:20.64\00:08:24.60 God is the King of heaven and earth, right? And to be a 00:08:24.63\00:08:29.86 belonging of somebody of such influence means that I must be 00:08:29.90\00:08:35.75 something precious as well. There's a value there. So I 00:08:35.78\00:08:38.73 think Paul sees a value in being the belonging of God. 00:08:38.76\00:08:41.64 Peter writes that we are God's own peculiar people it says in 00:08:41.68\00:08:45.79 the King James Version, but in other translations it tells us 00:08:45.82\00:08:49.06 the real meaning of that; his own special people, talking 00:08:49.10\00:08:52.14 about possession, being a possession of God and a special 00:08:52.17\00:08:55.06 possession. So I think of that when I read the words of Paul. 00:08:55.10\00:08:58.39 But he says to them that this angel of God stood by. The God 00:08:58.43\00:09:02.07 to whom I belong and whom I serve, verse 24, saying do not 00:09:02.10\00:09:05.90 be afraid Paul. You must be brought before Caesar and indeed 00:09:05.93\00:09:10.01 God has granted you all those who sail with you. Therefore, 00:09:10.05\00:09:14.10 take heart men for I believe God that it will be just as it was 00:09:14.14\00:09:18.16 told me. However, we must run aground on a certain island. 00:09:18.19\00:09:21.40 Now a couple things here. The Lord told him and he tells the 00:09:21.43\00:09:25.61 people that God has granted him all who sail. That tells us that 00:09:25.65\00:09:29.46 Paul has asked for the lives of all who sail with him. It just 00:09:29.50\00:09:33.57 shows us the passion he had for souls. And as he prayed, God 00:09:33.60\00:09:37.05 gave him that promise, but he also told him you're going to 00:09:37.08\00:09:40.31 run aground. In other words, I'm going to deliver you and God 00:09:40.35\00:09:43.62 could have delivered the ship had he deemed to do so, but he 00:09:43.66\00:09:47.61 allows the ship to come to destruction. The ship's going to 00:09:47.65\00:09:51.57 run aground, but, he says, not one life will be lost. 00:09:51.60\00:09:54.75 That's right, that's right. When we get to verse 27 we find that 00:09:54.79\00:09:59.15 this was not any ordinary storm. It says, Now when the 14th night 00:09:59.18\00:10:03.51 had come as we were driven up and down in the Adriatic sea 00:10:03.54\00:10:06.89 about midnight the sailors sensed that they were drawing 00:10:06.93\00:10:12.93 near some land. You know, I think about bad storms on land. 00:10:12.96\00:10:18.93 Just the other night there was a bad storm and the electricity 00:10:18.97\00:10:25.11 went out. It was a question of how many hours is this going to 00:10:25.14\00:10:33.23 last. Here they are, this is the 14th night, just cast about as 00:10:33.27\00:10:41.33 if there's no way for them to control their own ship. 00:10:41.37\00:10:44.28 And you have to imagine the amount of sea sickness going on 00:10:44.32\00:10:47.46 there and everything else. Oh my goodness, the despair too. 00:10:47.49\00:10:51.83 All of a sudden seemingly out of nowhere at midnight they sense 00:10:51.87\00:10:55.24 they are drawing near some land. It doesn't give us a clue as to 00:10:55.28\00:10:58.61 what they saw or what it was, but they sensed they were 00:10:58.65\00:11:01.27 drawing near some land, so they took soundings. They let down a 00:11:01.31\00:11:05.28 rope with lead at the bottom to kind of measure how deep the 00:11:05.31\00:11:09.19 water was and they found it to be 20 fathoms and when they had 00:11:09.23\00:11:12.40 gone a little farther they took soundings again and found it to 00:11:12.43\00:11:15.57 be 15 fathoms. So it's getting shallower. They're getting 00:11:15.61\00:11:18.12 closer to land. And it's interesting. It says, Then 00:11:18.16\00:11:20.45 fearing lest we should run aground on the rocks... Now 00:11:20.48\00:11:23.25 they're thinking wow we may come in too fast on the rocks and 00:11:23.28\00:11:27.21 this is going to break up the ship and the waves will take us 00:11:27.24\00:11:30.32 out to sea. Exactly, exactly. So it says, They dropped four 00:11:30.36\00:11:33.41 anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come. 00:11:33.44\00:11:36.87 That's interesting. Essentially they're praying for daylight 00:11:36.90\00:11:40.14 so they can see how to navigate the ship to get on a beach and 00:11:40.17\00:11:44.29 avoid the rocks. They are in great despair here. And as the 00:11:44.32\00:11:47.63 sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, when they had let 00:11:47.67\00:11:51.42 down the skiff or the life boat into the sea under pretense of 00:11:51.46\00:11:55.18 putting out anchors from the prow. So here there are some 00:11:55.21\00:12:00.39 sailors and they're giving the sense, pretending if you will, 00:12:00.42\00:12:05.57 that they're putting anchors down, but they're actually 00:12:05.60\00:12:07.93 putting a life boat out and they're going to get out and 00:12:07.97\00:12:12.38 they're going to escape. In verse 31 Paul says, Unless these 00:12:12.42\00:12:16.35 men stay in the ship you cannot be saved. He tells the centurion 00:12:16.38\00:12:20.28 and the soldiers. So the soldiers cut away the life boat 00:12:20.31\00:12:23.73 and off it goes. They had gained some confidence 00:12:23.76\00:12:27.88 in Paul. Well, of course, he's the one 00:12:27.92\00:12:30.25 who told them that they would arrive safely and they're still 00:12:30.29\00:12:33.53 kind of banking on that. In verse 33, it says, And as day 00:12:33.57\00:12:36.98 was about to dawn, Paul implored them all to take food 00:12:37.02\00:12:40.46 saying today is the 14th day you have waited and continued 00:12:40.49\00:12:43.99 without food and eaten nothing. Therefore I urge you... 00:12:44.03\00:12:47.49 can you imagine they're starving here. 00:12:47.52\00:12:49.58 Well it tells us there how fearful they were. They were 00:12:49.62\00:12:52.80 trying to conserve... And how busy they were, yeah. 00:12:52.83\00:12:55.95 Trying to prevent the ship from being broken up. Anyway verse 00:12:55.98\00:13:00.05 34 says he urged them to take nourishment for their survival 00:13:00.09\00:13:03.53 and in verse 35, it says, When he had said these things, he 00:13:03.56\00:13:06.75 took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all. 00:13:06.78\00:13:10.17 All of a sudden you get this sense that it's in the casual 00:13:10.21\00:13:15.01 setting. He stops, takes a moment, gives thanks to God. 00:13:15.05\00:13:18.87 You can see, it's almost like Jesus standing up and saying 00:13:18.91\00:13:23.10 peace be still to the storm. There's no fear here and he 00:13:23.14\00:13:27.45 gives thanks to God for the bread that they're about to eat 00:13:27.48\00:13:31.11 and then in verse 37 it says, In all there were 276 persons 00:13:31.14\00:13:34.74 on the ship. And when they had eaten enough they lightened the 00:13:34.78\00:13:37.73 ship and threw out the wheat into the sea. So here we see 00:13:37.77\00:13:40.61 this incredible fate at the end of this portion where the 00:13:40.65\00:13:43.43 Apostle Paul is sure that God is going to deliver them just as he 00:13:43.46\00:13:48.37 promised. One thing I want to point out here though that's 00:13:48.41\00:13:51.25 interesting to me. Back where you were reading in verse 22 00:13:51.28\00:13:54.48 where he first explained how God told him that he was going to 00:13:54.52\00:13:58.02 deliver them, they could have just kind of stopped there I 00:13:58.05\00:14:01.58 would think and said Oh good. But that's not what you see. 00:14:01.61\00:14:05.07 You see them going to work and putting forth their energies and 00:14:05.10\00:14:09.90 I think there's a lesson in that for us that when we pray and 00:14:09.93\00:14:13.87 we are claiming the promises of God, we don't just wait to see 00:14:13.91\00:14:17.62 it happen. When we pray that God will deliver us from some habit, 00:14:17.66\00:14:21.34 we don't just wait to see it taken away. We put all our 00:14:21.37\00:14:25.63 energies toward the answer to that prayer. 00:14:25.66\00:14:28.44 Because we believe it. If we believe it we'll go to 00:14:28.47\00:14:32.13 work and that's why the Bible says that faith always works. 00:14:32.17\00:14:35.60 Well we've got an exciting chapter coming in chapter 28, 00:14:35.63\00:14:38.99 but we have to take a break. So at this time let's take a few 00:14:39.03\00:14:42.52 moments and we'll see you back on Books of the Book. 00:14:42.56\00:14:45.00
