Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.74\00:00:02.82 We are studying in the book of Acts and, Jim, we just finished 00:00:02.85\00:00:06.10 up Acts chapter 25 and we had King Agrippa and Festus the 00:00:06.13\00:00:11.11 Roman governor as they're looking at the life of Paul 00:00:11.15\00:00:16.06 there on trial, Paul's on trial here. Actually it's more of an 00:00:16.10\00:00:20.79 informal. King Agrippa wanted to hear his situation. And Festus 00:00:20.83\00:00:24.63 explains to him some of his conundrum. Paul had asked to be 00:00:24.66\00:00:28.45 sent to Caesar, only Festus knows Paul hasn't done anything 00:00:28.49\00:00:31.71 wrong so he's not quite sure what to write to Caesar about 00:00:31.74\00:00:34.89 why he's taking up his time with this prisoner. Now we're going 00:00:34.93\00:00:39.90 to begin in chapter 26 there where Agrippa now allows Paul 00:00:39.93\00:00:44.04 to give his defense and explain his case. It says, Then Agrippa 00:00:44.08\00:00:47.57 said to Paul, You are permitted to speak for yourself. So Paul 00:00:47.60\00:00:51.06 stretched out his hand and answered for himself. I think 00:00:51.09\00:00:54.48 myself happy, King Agrippa, because today I shall answer for 00:00:54.52\00:00:57.84 myself before you concerning all the things of which I am accused 00:00:57.88\00:01:01.55 by the Jews, especially because you are expert in all customs 00:01:01.58\00:01:05.06 and questions which have to do with the Jews. Therefore, I beg 00:01:05.09\00:01:08.41 you to hear me patiently. So for Paul, he's been talking with all 00:01:08.44\00:01:11.77 these Romans and the Jews have made accusations and the Roman 00:01:11.81\00:01:15.10 governors haven't had the knowledge and the Roman 00:01:15.14\00:01:17.48 commander, Claudius Lysius, didn't have the knowledge that 00:01:17.51\00:01:20.71 apparently Agrippa has of the Jewish customs. So Paul is eager 00:01:20.74\00:01:23.67 to tell Agrippa because he knows Agrippa will see that there is 00:01:23.71\00:01:27.10 no foundation for the charges. Now he begins with his early 00:01:27.13\00:01:30.61 life. He says in verse 4, My manner of life from my youth 00:01:30.64\00:01:34.85 which was spent from the beginning among my own nation 00:01:34.89\00:01:39.03 at Jerusalem. All the Jews know. They knew me from the first if 00:01:39.07\00:01:43.61 they were willing to testify that according to the strictest 00:01:43.65\00:01:47.83 sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee and now I stand and am 00:01:47.86\00:01:52.01 judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our 00:01:52.05\00:01:55.47 fathers. To this promise the 12 tribes earnestly serving God 00:01:55.51\00:01:59.39 night and day hoped to attain. And he goes on here, and we've 00:01:59.42\00:02:02.87 looked at this before, about the resurrection of the dead. What's 00:02:02.91\00:02:06.32 interesting, Jim, is that he says that all the Jews know if 00:02:06.35\00:02:09.74 what does he say, if they would be willing to testify. In other 00:02:09.78\00:02:13.58 words, if they were honest, he said, they would testify that 00:02:13.62\00:02:17.39 they've known the kind of person I am. He was the great 00:02:17.42\00:02:20.86 persecutor, Saul. They act like here's this guy and he's this 00:02:20.89\00:02:25.45 insurrectionist, etc., etc., and what he's saying here if that if 00:02:25.48\00:02:28.80 they would testify of my early life, you would know full well 00:02:28.83\00:02:32.96 that I'm not just some renegade and that they have other reasons 00:02:33.00\00:02:38.23 for being angry with me. Then he says in verse 8 in connection 00:02:38.26\00:02:42.41 with the hope of Israel as he appeals to King Agrippa, Why 00:02:42.44\00:02:46.52 should it be thought incredible by you that God raises the dead? 00:02:46.55\00:02:50.18 Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the 00:02:50.22\00:02:53.64 name of Jesus of Nazareth and he goes on to talk about how he 00:02:53.68\00:02:56.99 had carted people off to prison and he had even seen to it that 00:02:57.02\00:03:01.01 they were put to death under his persecuting power. And he's just 00:03:01.04\00:03:05.47 saying basically I understand what it's like to be opposed to 00:03:05.51\00:03:10.18 Jesus Christ. But then he's going to go on and tell us what 00:03:10.21\00:03:14.85 changed. When we get to verse 12 it's 00:03:14.88\00:03:16.71 time for him to once again share his conversion. And I find it 00:03:16.75\00:03:20.16 interesting that this is not the only time where the Apostle Paul 00:03:20.20\00:03:23.95 is sharing his testimony here in the book of Acts and he never 00:03:23.98\00:03:27.51 shies away from it. And I think that we need to remember that 00:03:27.55\00:03:30.67 even though we may have told our testimony before, it may seem 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.64 like it's no big deal to us... It seems redundant. Like I've 00:03:33.68\00:03:36.58 done this before. Right. And it gets old. But it 00:03:36.62\00:03:39.64 doesn't get old to people who have never heard it before. 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.92 It's the same thing that I would say about the preaching of the 00:03:41.96\00:03:45.56 gospel. Sometimes we think, oh you know, are we going to hold 00:03:45.60\00:03:49.32 another seminar where we talk about all the same stuff that 00:03:49.35\00:03:52.73 we've always talked about. But remember the seminar that we're 00:03:52.77\00:03:56.02 holding as a general rule is not for us who have heard it but for 00:03:56.05\00:03:59.59 those who haven't and they need to hear that. Even though Paul 00:03:59.62\00:04:03.46 has reiterated this, he didn't try to totally change it or give 00:04:03.50\00:04:07.30 it a totally different perspective. He pretty much 00:04:07.34\00:04:09.22 gives the account because it's powerful enough in and of 00:04:09.25\00:04:11.72 itself and Agrippa needed to hear it. 00:04:11.75\00:04:13.76 That's right and let me interject just briefly that the 00:04:13.80\00:04:17.40 other benefit of the testimony is... There are a lot of 00:04:17.43\00:04:21.07 theories out there but the testimony is what basically 00:04:21.11\00:04:24.67 tells you that the theory is real. And so when Paul is giving 00:04:24.71\00:04:28.70 his testimony, he's helping Agrippa see the religion of 00:04:28.74\00:04:33.13 Christianity actually fleshed out and what Jesus can really do 00:04:33.16\00:04:36.27 and has done in a person's life. 00:04:36.31\00:04:37.87 That's right. When we think back to Acts chapter 9 when Jesus 00:04:37.90\00:04:43.78 told Paul, well actually he told Ananias about Paul, he said, Go 00:04:43.81\00:04:49.65 for he is a chosen vessel of mine to bear my name before 00:04:49.69\00:04:53.12 Gentiles, kings and the children of Israel. We mentioned that 00:04:53.15\00:04:56.92 before the break. This was a purpose that God had for him. 00:04:56.96\00:05:00.56 Paul was not here sharing with Agrippa, oh here I go again and 00:05:00.60\00:05:04.01 let's try to figure out if I can get free. No, this was an 00:05:04.05\00:05:07.54 opportunity. God had placed him for the very purpose of being 00:05:07.58\00:05:11.31 able to appeal directly to these leaders. And so he's looking 00:05:11.35\00:05:15.32 not at this as a way to get out of legal trouble but in order to 00:05:15.36\00:05:19.30 save souls. He's appealing to Festus and Agrippa here. 00:05:19.33\00:05:22.58 That's right. So we hear his conversion beginning in verse 12 00:05:22.62\00:05:25.37 and he begins to tell the same conversion story that we're 00:05:25.41\00:05:28.96 familiar with about how he was on his way to Damascus and the 00:05:28.99\00:05:33.44 bright light shone from heaven, Jesus appeared to him and said 00:05:33.48\00:05:37.18 Saul why are you persecuting me? It's hard to kick against the 00:05:37.22\00:05:40.79 goads and he begins to describe the things that Jesus said. 00:05:40.83\00:05:44.83 In this description, I would like to pick up where he enters 00:05:44.87\00:05:49.10 in verse 17 to some things that Jesus says that are not in 00:05:49.13\00:05:52.50 any of the other accounts of his conversion. So this is a 00:05:52.54\00:05:56.44 very helpful account here in chapter 26. Verse 17 he says, 00:05:56.47\00:06:00.20 and this is Jesus speaking to Paul, I will deliver you from 00:06:00.24\00:06:04.27 the Jewish people as well as from the Gentiles to whom I now 00:06:04.30\00:06:07.70 send you. So he tells him, I'm sending you to the Gentiles. 00:06:07.73\00:06:11.09 And you need to be delivered from them. 00:06:11.13\00:06:13.11 That's right. That's exactly right. To open their eyes, okay 00:06:13.15\00:06:17.95 so their understanding in order to turn them from darkness to 00:06:17.99\00:06:22.38 light. I think as he continues here he's speaking primarily 00:06:22.41\00:06:25.93 about the Gentiles because the Apostle Paul is the apostle to 00:06:25.97\00:06:29.61 the Gentiles and they had not received light. They had not had 00:06:29.65\00:06:33.26 the same privileges and opportunities that the Jewish 00:06:33.29\00:06:36.04 nation had had. And so he's saying, look I'm sending you so 00:06:36.07\00:06:39.56 that you can give the light that the nation of Israel failed to 00:06:39.59\00:06:43.05 give even though that was my purpose and plan for them. 00:06:43.08\00:06:44.99 So any time that God calls on us to do something, if we don't do 00:06:45.02\00:06:49.78 it God will find another way and he is now sending Paul to share 00:06:49.81\00:06:53.85 with the Gentiles what we could only have wished they had heard 00:06:53.88\00:06:57.88 before. But he wants them to turn from darkness to light, 00:06:57.92\00:07:01.69 from the power of Satan to God. You know, when you read the 00:07:01.73\00:07:06.51 Apostle Paul talk about the Gentile or pagan worship and 00:07:06.55\00:07:10.34 sacrifices and that sort of thing, he says when the Gentiles 00:07:10.37\00:07:14.13 sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God. 00:07:14.16\00:07:17.67 So Jesus is here saying, I want you, Paul, to turn them from the 00:07:17.70\00:07:21.99 power of Satan to the power of God and then he says that they 00:07:22.03\00:07:27.10 may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance. See the Jews 00:07:27.13\00:07:32.17 always treasured the fact that they were heirs, they would 00:07:32.20\00:07:36.97 receive of the inheritance. But here Jesus is saying help the 00:07:37.00\00:07:41.39 Gentiles to see that they are joint heirs. They are going to 00:07:41.43\00:07:45.96 receive the inheritance among those who are sanctified and it 00:07:45.99\00:07:51.08 says by faith in me. This is an interesting portion of this 00:07:51.11\00:07:55.90 passage because first of all it highlights the fact that it's 00:07:55.94\00:08:00.17 not through any ceremonial rites not through circumcision, 00:08:00.21\00:08:04.44 nothing like that that a person advances and becomes more pious 00:08:04.48\00:08:08.85 like the Jews may have thought. And it's also a lesson for 00:08:08.89\00:08:12.51 Christians who believe that we're justified, we're made 00:08:12.55\00:08:16.11 righteous, we find forgiveness from God by faith in Christ, but 00:08:16.14\00:08:21.03 when it comes to our growth, well our sanctification, that's 00:08:21.06\00:08:25.27 something that we've got to do. But this says that we're 00:08:25.31\00:08:28.88 sanctified the same way that we're justified, by faith in 00:08:28.91\00:08:32.80 Christ. When you think about sanctification, it's growth, 00:08:32.84\00:08:36.69 it's becoming like Christ. It makes me think of 00:08:36.73\00:08:41.21 II Corinthians 3:18 where the Bible says that we are changed 00:08:41.25\00:08:46.84 from glory to glory by beholding the glory of the Lord. 00:08:46.87\00:08:51.83 By beholding Jesus we're changed So faith in Jesus is what 00:08:51.86\00:08:56.57 changes us or sanctifies us, any of us, Jew or Gentile can 00:08:56.61\00:09:01.25 only be changed through Christ and this is the message that the 00:09:01.29\00:09:04.14 Apostle Paul is to share with the Gentiles. 00:09:04.17\00:09:06.13 That's right. So in verse 19 he continues there with his 00:09:06.17\00:09:14.52 experience here. Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient 00:09:14.56\00:09:18.64 to the heavenly vision but declared first to those in 00:09:18.67\00:09:21.72 Damascus and in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of 00:09:21.75\00:09:25.53 Judea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent, turn to 00:09:25.56\00:09:30.22 God and do works befitting repentance. So he says look 00:09:30.25\00:09:34.09 after this happened I could only be obedient and that's what I 00:09:34.12\00:09:38.19 did. Then he went on to describe the things that he did and in 00:09:38.23\00:09:41.80 verse 22 I want to point out what he says. Therefore, having 00:09:41.83\00:09:45.62 obtained help from God to this day I stand witnessing both to 00:09:45.66\00:09:49.32 small and great saying no other things than those which the 00:09:49.36\00:09:53.14 prophets and Moses said would come, that the Christ would 00:09:53.17\00:09:56.73 suffer, that he would be the first to rise from the dead and 00:09:56.77\00:10:00.29 would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the 00:10:00.32\00:10:02.73 Gentiles. In other words, he's saying, the only things I'm 00:10:02.76\00:10:06.31 saying are what the Jewish nation should have accepted 00:10:06.35\00:10:09.47 themselves. These are all the things that are in their own 00:10:09.51\00:10:12.60 scriptures. Right, their own writings teach 00:10:12.64\00:10:14.41 these things. So in verse 24 he makes his defense and it says 00:10:14.44\00:10:18.89 that Festus, after he made this, said in a loud voice, Paul you 00:10:18.93\00:10:23.35 are beside yourself. Much learning is driving you mad. 00:10:23.38\00:10:26.03 In other words, Paul, you're crazy and he doesn't say it 00:10:26.06\00:10:28.64 quietly, he bursts out, that's ludicrous. And Paul answers him 00:10:28.67\00:10:32.91 and says I'm not mad most noble Festus but speak the words of 00:10:32.94\00:10:37.14 truth and reason. It's interesting the ideal of turning 00:10:37.17\00:10:39.56 from darkness to light again. You know, Paul says in 00:10:39.60\00:10:42.28 I Corinthians chapter 1 that the message of the cross is 00:10:42.31\00:10:44.90 foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those of us 00:10:44.93\00:10:47.68 who are being saved it is the power of God. And here it is. 00:10:47.71\00:10:51.12 He's saying no Festus you have it wrong. I'm speaking truth and 00:10:51.15\00:10:54.53 reason here. Now it's interesting, and then he turns 00:10:54.56\00:10:58.10 to King Agrippa. He says for the king, he talks of King Agrippa 00:10:58.14\00:11:01.90 right here in his presence before whom I also speak freely 00:11:01.94\00:11:04.99 knows these things and I am convinced that none of these 00:11:05.02\00:11:07.85 things escapes his attention since this thing was not done 00:11:07.89\00:11:10.77 in a corner. He knows about this history, what happened with 00:11:10.81\00:11:13.88 Jesus. King Agrippa, he says, do you believe in the prophets? 00:11:13.91\00:11:17.59 I know that you believe. Then King Agrippa said to Paul, you 00:11:17.62\00:11:21.34 almost persuade me to become a Christian. So you see that 00:11:21.37\00:11:25.01 Agrippa is moved here by what he is hearing from Paul and Paul 00:11:25.05\00:11:28.23 is appealing to his sense of reason, his understanding of 00:11:28.27\00:11:31.69 Jewish custom and the fact that he can't help but see the 00:11:31.72\00:11:35.11 fulfillment of prophecy in what he has shared about Christ. 00:11:35.14\00:11:38.89 He says you almost persuade me. And I like Paul's answer. Paul 00:11:38.92\00:11:43.86 says in verse 29, I would to God that not only you but all who 00:11:43.90\00:11:49.00 hear me today might become both almost and altogether such as I 00:11:49.03\00:11:53.32 am except for these chains. Not almost Christians but altogether 00:11:53.36\00:11:59.06 Christians and when the time here concludes it says in verse 00:11:59.09\00:12:03.06 32, Then Agrippa said to Festus, this man might have been set 00:12:03.10\00:12:07.03 free if he had not appealed to Caesar. 00:12:07.07\00:12:09.79 But we know that that's not actually true. The reality is 00:12:09.83\00:12:14.01 that if he had not appealed to Caesar then Festus would have 00:12:14.05\00:12:17.53 let him go back to Jerusalem and they would have killed him on 00:12:17.56\00:12:20.63 the way. But there's another reason why and that's because 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.67 God had a plan for him and that plan was to go to Rome. And you 00:12:23.70\00:12:27.44 know what? God has a plan for each one of us and God has a 00:12:27.48\00:12:31.15 plan for you. Our hope is that through the study of the book of 00:12:31.18\00:12:34.51 Acts you'll come to understand that and that you will be 00:12:34.54\00:12:38.02 submissive like Paul was to God's plan. We look forward to 00:12:38.06\00:12:41.50 seeing you next time on Books of the Book. 00:12:41.53\00:12:44.02
