Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.47\00:00:02.51 Just before the break we were looking here at Paul before the 00:00:02.55\00:00:08.00 Sanhedrin in Acts chapter 23 and Mark, we were talking about this 00:00:08.04\00:00:13.46 response of Paul when he had made a very plain statement to 00:00:13.49\00:00:18.89 the high priest calling him you whitewashed wall or a hypocrite 00:00:18.93\00:00:24.30 because he was charging Paul according to law but he was 00:00:24.33\00:00:27.20 actually going to contrary to Jewish law by having him struck 00:00:27.24\00:00:31.14 without a trial. Then he says, once he finds out he's the high 00:00:31.18\00:00:34.94 priest, well you shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people. 00:00:34.98\00:00:38.89 I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that. But you know as I look at 00:00:38.93\00:00:43.07 this, we need to also recognize that this high priest was about 00:00:43.10\00:00:47.21 seven or eight years later we understand assassinated. 00:00:47.24\00:00:50.48 So what the Apostle Paul said here in one sense could be 00:00:50.51\00:00:54.07 perceived to be a prophetic utterance of sorts because he 00:00:54.10\00:00:57.59 was very clear, God will strike you and exactly seven or eight 00:00:57.63\00:01:02.66 years later he did find himself in a death that he didn't plan. 00:01:02.69\00:01:07.93 That's right. Another thing that strikes me about that is, and I 00:01:07.96\00:01:12.29 think back for whatever reason to the book of Daniel where the 00:01:12.32\00:01:17.07 Lord told Daniel in a dream in Daniel 2 that it's God who sets 00:01:17.10\00:01:22.21 up kings and takes down kings. God has control over things that 00:01:22.25\00:01:27.08 go on in this world. Everybody has their day of opportunity 00:01:27.12\00:01:30.87 and God is long suffering and we've seen that in the history 00:01:30.91\00:01:36.06 of Israel and other places. The Lord says vengeance is mine, I 00:01:36.10\00:01:41.89 will repay. I don't think Paul is feigning his respect here. 00:01:41.93\00:01:46.62 He's not saying oh wink, wink, if I would have known you were 00:01:46.65\00:01:50.03 the high priest I wouldn't have said it and I think some people 00:01:50.06\00:01:53.00 get that from Paul. He was so bold and so they say well yeah 00:01:53.03\00:01:57.08 well Paul really... They read into him some of this heroism 00:01:57.11\00:02:01.13 that we have. I think Paul really meant he really didn't 00:02:01.16\00:02:05.26 realize it was the high priest. The reason I say that is you 00:02:05.30\00:02:09.37 know the same apostle... it actually makes me think of 00:02:09.40\00:02:13.38 Romans chapter 13 and the Apostle Paul tells us in 00:02:13.41\00:02:17.32 Romans 13 and I'm looking at verse 1: He says, And let every 00:02:17.36\00:02:20.87 soul be subject to the governing authorities for there is no 00:02:20.91\00:02:24.19 authority except from God and the authorities that exist are 00:02:24.22\00:02:27.90 appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority 00:02:27.94\00:02:31.57 resists the ordinance of God and those who resist will bring 00:02:31.61\00:02:35.18 judgment on themselves, for rulers are not a terror to good 00:02:35.22\00:02:39.21 works but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? 00:02:39.24\00:02:43.20 Do what is good and you will have praise from the same. 00:02:43.23\00:02:45.85 Now it's interesting. In other words Paul's saying God sets up 00:02:45.89\00:02:48.79 these authorities for our protection and he says if you 00:02:48.82\00:02:51.73 don't want trouble from the authorities do what's right. 00:02:51.76\00:02:54.78 Well that didn't always work even for Paul but it doesn't 00:02:54.81\00:02:57.76 deter him from being respectful to authority. He goes on to talk 00:02:57.80\00:03:02.64 about how the authority is God's minister for our good, but if 00:03:02.67\00:03:06.49 you do evil, be afraid. He says he's God's minister and avenger 00:03:06.53\00:03:10.32 to execute wrath on him who practices evil. He says he 00:03:10.35\00:03:13.58 doesn't bear the sword in vain. He talks about rendering taxes 00:03:13.62\00:03:17.18 to whom taxes are due, rendering honor to whom honor is due and 00:03:17.22\00:03:20.64 customs to whom customs are due and this kind of thing. So we 00:03:20.68\00:03:24.25 know that when he speaks this phrase to the high priest, I 00:03:24.28\00:03:27.52 didn't realize it, he meant it and it should speak something 00:03:27.56\00:03:31.23 to us about the need for being respectful of authority whether 00:03:31.26\00:03:34.88 it be in the church or whether it be in community. Vengeance 00:03:34.91\00:03:38.59 is mine, I will repay. God took care of matters with that high 00:03:38.63\00:03:42.71 priest and he also will help Paul through this situation as 00:03:42.75\00:03:46.76 we're going to find out. But the Lord is in charge of all things. 00:03:46.80\00:03:50.90 Now in verse 7 it says when he had said this, I'm sorry verse 00:03:50.93\00:03:55.00 6. It says that when Paul perceived that one part were 00:03:55.03\00:03:58.75 Sadducees and the other part Pharisees, he cried out in the 00:03:58.79\00:04:02.42 council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a 00:04:02.46\00:04:06.15 Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I 00:04:06.18\00:04:09.90 am being judged. And when he had said this a dissension arose 00:04:09.94\00:04:13.31 between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and 00:04:13.35\00:04:15.48 the assembly was divided. 00:04:15.52\00:04:16.65 Of course, the Sadducees say there is no resurrection and 00:04:16.69\00:04:20.23 it's interesting here that Paul took his knowledge first of all 00:04:20.27\00:04:23.78 of the fact that these guys weren't here for truth and 00:04:23.81\00:04:26.42 justice. They were here to further their own means. 00:04:26.46\00:04:29.00 So he picks an issue that is an issue that is a personal 00:04:29.04\00:04:34.46 contention between them. Knowing that because they're only there 00:04:34.50\00:04:38.20 for contention's sake it may take the heat off of him and 00:04:38.23\00:04:41.78 certainly what we find happening is it does. They get into a 00:04:41.81\00:04:45.45 fight with each other and it says in verse 10, Now when there 00:04:45.48\00:04:48.50 arose a great dissension, the commander fearing lest Paul 00:04:48.54\00:04:51.36 might be pulled in pieces by them, not because they are going 00:04:51.39\00:04:54.14 at Paul necessarily, well the Sadducees were but the Pharisees 00:04:54.18\00:04:56.90 defend him. They say well we don't find a fault in him 00:04:56.93\00:04:58.79 because now he's on our side in this issue. But this tumult 00:04:58.83\00:05:03.47 arises and they command the soldiers to go down and take him 00:05:03.50\00:05:07.16 by force from among them and bring him back to the barracks 00:05:07.19\00:05:10.82 again for his safety. So it's interesting that this is 00:05:10.85\00:05:14.84 happening among this religious group. You're almost thinking 00:05:14.88\00:05:18.45 you're in a mob somewhere of totally irreligious people. But 00:05:18.48\00:05:22.02 these are the leaders of the Jewish church. 00:05:22.05\00:05:23.75 When you just read in Romans that the Apostle Paul said that 00:05:23.79\00:05:27.81 the authorities are there to be our protection. They were 00:05:27.84\00:05:31.79 certainly the protection for the Apostle Paul here protecting him 00:05:31.83\00:05:34.81 from his own people. You'll notice in verse 11 something 00:05:34.84\00:05:39.02 happens here that I think is very important. Because you can 00:05:39.06\00:05:42.52 imagine the Apostle Paul, yeah he had high hopes for when he 00:05:42.56\00:05:45.99 went to Jerusalem and the leading brethren they were 00:05:46.02\00:05:50.22 trying to do what was right. We believe that James and the 00:05:50.26\00:05:54.57 counsel given there was not the best and it caused Paul to 00:05:54.61\00:05:58.48 perhaps be bound a little bit earlier than he would have been 00:05:58.51\00:06:02.35 so that didn't work out as planned and now we see that 00:06:02.38\00:06:06.59 he's not getting very much traction here either and the 00:06:06.63\00:06:10.24 Apostle Paul has got to be starting to become discouraged. 00:06:10.27\00:06:15.05 He's been so excited. He's got such a burden. We read in the 00:06:15.08\00:06:19.20 epistles about his burden for his countrymen and it's just 00:06:19.24\00:06:22.98 not working out. But in verse 11 it says, But the following 00:06:23.01\00:06:26.68 night the Lord stood by him and said, Be of good cheer Paul, for 00:06:26.72\00:06:31.26 as you have testified for me in Jerusalem so you must also bear 00:06:31.29\00:06:35.80 witness at Rome. You know, there are certain passages that 00:06:35.84\00:06:39.73 we have read where it talks about these warnings, the Spirit 00:06:39.77\00:06:43.37 warning different believers in different cities about what's 00:06:43.41\00:06:46.98 going to happen to him in Jerusalem. I can only imagine 00:06:47.01\00:06:49.76 he was starting to think, I wonder if I should not have come 00:06:49.79\00:06:53.42 if that wasn't the right thing to do? Here we find that the 00:06:53.46\00:06:57.91 Lord affirms what he did. He says, As you have testified for 00:06:57.94\00:07:01.58 me. He doesn't chastise him for coming in disobedience to him, 00:07:01.62\00:07:05.14 but this makes it clear that it was perfectly allowable in the 00:07:05.18\00:07:08.66 will of God to come to Jerusalem and he affirms him for 00:07:08.70\00:07:11.69 testifying for him. That's right. And as much as he 00:07:11.73\00:07:14.65 has been beaten and his life has been threatened, he will make it 00:07:14.69\00:07:18.96 to Rome. So I'm going to make it out of this place alive. 00:07:19.00\00:07:22.77 He's going to Rome and he knows that now. So this is an 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.57 opportunity for encouragement and the Apostle Paul is 00:07:25.60\00:07:28.30 encouraged but we find that the hatred of his opposition has not 00:07:28.34\00:07:32.68 gone away. In verse 12 it says, And when it was day, some of the 00:07:32.71\00:07:37.12 Jews banded together and bound themselves under an oath saying 00:07:37.15\00:07:41.44 that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. 00:07:41.47\00:07:45.72 Now there were more than 40 who had formed this conspiracy. 00:07:45.75\00:07:50.09 That's a lot of people. If you think about it, he's really in 00:07:50.13\00:07:54.43 danger now. They took a vow. 00:07:54.46\00:07:56.94 They took a vow, yeah, exactly. I'm going to talk about that in 00:07:56.98\00:08:00.53 a minute. It says, They came to the chief priests and elders and 00:08:00.56\00:08:04.32 said, We have bound ourselves under a great oath that we will 00:08:04.36\00:08:08.13 eat nothing until we have killed Paul. Now you, therefore, 00:08:08.16\00:08:12.17 together with the council suggest to the commander that 00:08:12.21\00:08:15.63 he be brought down to you tomorrow as though you were 00:08:15.66\00:08:19.01 going to make further inquiries concerning him. So use some 00:08:19.05\00:08:23.09 deception here. But we are ready to kill him before he comes near 00:08:23.12\00:08:27.80 So think about this for a moment Is this really happening. These 00:08:27.83\00:08:32.48 40 Jews, church members, religious. I mean they're 00:08:32.51\00:08:37.73 obviously religious because they are taking an oath, an oath 00:08:37.77\00:08:42.26 before God, right? Let the divine punishment come upon me 00:08:42.29\00:08:46.75 if I do not kill Paul. Okay, so they're taking an oath before 00:08:46.78\00:08:51.21 God and then they're encouraging the leaders to be deceptive and 00:08:51.25\00:08:55.61 lie so that they can kill the Apostle Paul and commit murder. 00:08:55.65\00:08:59.71 I mean, the blindness that is happening here in this passage 00:08:59.74\00:09:05.53 is absolutely amazing and you see now that it really is the 00:09:05.56\00:09:10.72 officers of Rome now who are the ones who are protecting Paul. 00:09:10.75\00:09:16.14 Paul is having to hide behind his own imprisonment to keep 00:09:16.18\00:09:21.53 from being hurt here by these Jews. 00:09:21.57\00:09:24.06 You know there's a lesson that could be learned that we won't 00:09:24.09\00:09:27.51 look at as much right now, but here... There's a lot of 00:09:27.54\00:09:31.16 discussion today in Christianity about church and state and the 00:09:31.20\00:09:34.46 state is generally the enemy. But here we don't see the state 00:09:34.49\00:09:37.21 that is doing the persecuting. We see the church doing the 00:09:37.24\00:09:39.93 persecuting. The state is defending, which is very 00:09:39.96\00:09:41.91 interesting. Now we pick up in... 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.76 You know, Mark, before you do that, it just made me think when 00:09:44.80\00:09:48.43 I was looking back at this. This oath, you know, I'm not going to 00:09:48.47\00:09:52.48 eat or drink until I kill Paul. Well we keep reading and we find 00:09:52.51\00:09:56.49 out that Paul spent a couple years in prison. In fact, the 00:09:56.52\00:10:00.88 very last couple verses of the book tell us he was two years in 00:10:00.92\00:10:06.51 one place. Obviously they broke their oath or there were 40 dead 00:10:06.54\00:10:12.44 men. This is quite an amazing thing. As we're looking at this, 00:10:12.47\00:10:18.63 we just need to remember that God would not have us believe 00:10:18.66\00:10:24.15 that the end justifies the means and that's what we really see 00:10:24.19\00:10:29.64 happening here. Sometimes we think well if I'm not fully 00:10:29.67\00:10:34.10 honest it's okay if it's in order to make things work out 00:10:34.13\00:10:38.40 for this cause that I believe is right. There is a variety of 00:10:38.44\00:10:42.67 things that we could do. Slandering someone's character 00:10:42.71\00:10:46.50 in order to promote something that we think is right; tearing 00:10:46.54\00:10:49.82 them down. In reality what you are seeing here amongst the 00:10:49.86\00:10:53.11 church is politics. They're being political. They are 00:10:53.14\00:10:59.13 putting their goals above their integrity in how they go about 00:10:59.16\00:11:03.60 doing things. The Apostle Paul, he didn't know how things were 00:11:03.64\00:11:07.43 going to work out. He trusted that to God but he made sure 00:11:07.47\00:11:10.57 that he always maintained his integrity. That wasn't the case 00:11:10.60\00:11:13.67 for his opposition. Absolutely Jim. And as we go on 00:11:13.70\00:11:17.23 here in verse 16 we find an interesting intervention here. 00:11:17.27\00:11:21.77 It says, So when Paul's sister's son heard of their ambush, he 00:11:21.80\00:11:25.58 went and entered the barracks and told Paul and Paul called 00:11:25.62\00:11:29.33 one of the centurions to him and said, Take this young man to the 00:11:29.37\00:11:32.12 commander for he has something to tell him. And of course then 00:11:32.16\00:11:35.52 the young man was taken before Claudius Lysius and he hears 00:11:35.56\00:11:38.76 about this plot and prepares to thwart it. Now it's interesting 00:11:38.79\00:11:41.79 in mentions Paul's sister's son here and we don't hear a lot 00:11:41.82\00:11:44.62 about Paul's family members and there's a good likelihood that 00:11:44.65\00:11:47.41 they had not converted to Christianity but evidently the 00:11:47.45\00:11:50.99 young man had in his heart some affection for his uncle and he 00:11:51.02\00:11:54.70 heard about this plot and I believe the Lord was in that. 00:11:54.73\00:11:58.13 The Lord used that and Claudius Lysius to bring protection to 00:11:58.17\00:12:02.47 Paul and it says that Claudius, in verse 23, called for two 00:12:02.50\00:12:06.07 centurions saying, Prepare 200 soldiers, 70 horsemen, 200 spear 00:12:06.11\00:12:09.43 men and go to Caesarea the third hour of the night and take Paul 00:12:09.46\00:12:13.40 and they brought protection. So once again we see that the Lord 00:12:13.43\00:12:17.33 is able to thwart the plan of Paul's enemies and bring 00:12:17.36\00:12:21.50 deliverance. And it's important for us to know that the same 00:12:21.54\00:12:24.60 God seeks to preserve us and bring our deliverance. 00:12:24.63\00:12:28.76 Well that's all the time we have for Books of the Book. 00:12:28.79\00:12:32.89 See you next time. 00:12:32.92\00:12:33.95
