Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.30\00:00:03.04 When we went to our break, Mark, we were talking about this 00:00:03.08\00:00:07.56 exhortation given by the Apostle Paul to the elders in Ephesus. 00:00:07.60\00:00:12.45 And he had just spoken in verse 20 about how he had proclaimed 00:00:12.49\00:00:17.14 publicly and from house to house the gospel and held nothing back 00:00:17.18\00:00:22.36 We pick up in verse 22 and it says, And see now I go bound in 00:00:22.40\00:00:26.67 the Spirit to Jerusalem. So something, whether it was the 00:00:26.71\00:00:30.82 Spirit of God or just his own fervent desire, he felt bound, 00:00:30.85\00:00:34.51 he needed to go to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will 00:00:34.54\00:00:38.02 happen to me there except that the Holy Spirit testifies in 00:00:38.05\00:00:41.71 every city saying that chains and tribulations await me. 00:00:41.75\00:00:45.47 So we see this interesting statement that the Holy Spirit 00:00:45.50\00:00:49.74 is testifying wherever he goes either through some special 00:00:49.78\00:00:53.95 revelation to himself or to one of the believers. And we'll see 00:00:53.99\00:00:57.00 that in the future too as he continues to travel that the 00:00:57.03\00:01:00.53 believers are telling him it looks like something bad is 00:01:00.57\00:01:03.64 going to happen when he goes to Jerusalem. So he knows that 00:01:03.67\00:01:06.82 there's going to be, as he says here, chains and tribulations 00:01:06.85\00:01:10.42 when he gets there. But he's still going. He's fervent to go. 00:01:10.46\00:01:14.52 In verse 24 it says, But none of these things move me nor do I 00:01:14.56\00:01:18.89 count my life dear to myself so that I may finish my race with 00:01:18.93\00:01:22.36 joy and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus to 00:01:22.39\00:01:25.55 testify to the gospel of the grace of God. You can almost 00:01:25.59\00:01:28.68 tell that he's saying, You know, I've gone through so much, I'm 00:01:28.72\00:01:32.54 not going to be a coward now. I'm going to keep going because 00:01:32.58\00:01:36.37 I want to finish my race with joy. 00:01:36.40\00:01:38.38 That's right and he says it's the ministry I received from 00:01:38.42\00:01:41.73 Jesus. He takes that seriously. He wants to finish that race. 00:01:41.76\00:01:45.45 And picking up in verse 25, he says, And indeed now I know that 00:01:45.48\00:01:49.28 you all among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God 00:01:49.32\00:01:53.87 will see my face no more. Of course, this is a parting and 00:01:53.91\00:01:57.67 he believes because of what the Spirit has told him that he's 00:01:57.70\00:02:01.59 going to perish in Jerusalem. He doesn't know. And verse 26 00:02:01.63\00:02:05.29 says, Therefore I testify to you... These are his parting 00:02:05.32\00:02:08.91 words to them. I testify to you this day that I am innocent of 00:02:08.95\00:02:12.95 the blood of all men, for I have not shunned to declare to you 00:02:12.98\00:02:16.95 the whole council of God. Jim, this just really grabs my 00:02:16.98\00:02:22.13 attention as a minister of the gospel. He says, I testify that 00:02:22.17\00:02:28.07 I'm innocent for or because I have not shunned. In other words 00:02:28.11\00:02:33.23 if I had played a political angle and not wanted to ruffle 00:02:33.26\00:02:37.93 feathers and held back on some things and not told the saints 00:02:37.96\00:02:41.75 there certain things, not preached certain things because 00:02:41.78\00:02:44.89 it would create opposition or people would get mad at me or 00:02:44.93\00:02:48.98 even in his case worse, he says I wouldn't be innocent. I'd be 00:02:49.01\00:02:52.77 guilty of the blood of others. So he really takes his charge 00:02:52.80\00:02:56.53 seriously and so should any minister of the gospel, so 00:02:56.56\00:03:01.18 should every Christian. If we're going to be free from the blood 00:03:01.22\00:03:04.43 of men and women, if we're going to be free from the blood of 00:03:04.46\00:03:08.81 others and the guilt of their sins, if we know the truth, we 00:03:08.84\00:03:12.63 are debtors, as Paul says in the book of Romans, to share that 00:03:12.67\00:03:16.43 truth with others. You know maybe we may feel like we 00:03:16.46\00:03:18.80 know a lot and we may feel like we know a little, but what we 00:03:18.84\00:03:23.14 know we are bound to share. So he goes on to say, Take heed 00:03:23.18\00:03:27.98 to yourselves and to the flock, verse 28, among which the Holy 00:03:28.01\00:03:31.78 Spirit has made you overseers. Now he gives that charge to them 00:03:31.82\00:03:35.56 and reminds them, you are disciples of Christ and that you 00:03:35.59\00:03:38.93 have a responsibility now. And we could speak to that for each 00:03:38.96\00:03:42.27 one of us having that responsibility in the faith. 00:03:42.30\00:03:47.08 We don't just need to minister but we ourselves have roles to 00:03:47.12\00:03:48.94 play. Of course, he's speaking to the elders of the church in 00:03:48.98\00:03:52.43 Ephesus and he says in verse 29, For I know this, that after my 00:03:52.47\00:03:55.89 departure savage wolves, not might but will, come in among 00:03:55.92\00:04:00.52 you not sparing the flock. These are people from the outside that 00:04:00.56\00:04:04.07 are going to come in and try to cause trouble in the church. 00:04:04.10\00:04:08.32 But then verse 29 says, verse 30 rather, Also from among 00:04:08.36\00:04:12.51 yourselves men will rise up. Not men might rise up, men will rise 00:04:12.55\00:04:16.37 up, speaking perverse things to draw away the disciples after 00:04:16.41\00:04:19.78 themselves. Therefore, he says watch and remember that for 00:04:19.81\00:04:23.11 three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with 00:04:23.15\00:04:26.35 tears. You now need to warn them with tears. He says, you need to 00:04:26.38\00:04:29.34 watch. Keep a lookout not only for those who are going to come 00:04:29.37\00:04:32.53 from the outside and bring trouble but even those from the 00:04:32.57\00:04:35.66 inside that are going to come up with strange teachings and try 00:04:35.70\00:04:37.85 to lead people away from the simplicity of the gospel. 00:04:37.88\00:04:40.48 That's right. And these were not just believers, they were elders 00:04:40.52\00:04:42.50 They were overseers and he was giving them a charge of 00:04:42.53\00:04:44.92 responsibility. In verse 32 he says, So now brethren I commend 00:04:44.96\00:04:48.53 you to God and to the word of his grace which is able to build 00:04:48.57\00:04:52.10 you up and give you an inheritance among all those who 00:04:52.14\00:04:55.47 are sanctified. I have coveted no one's silver or gold or 00:04:55.50\00:04:58.76 apparel. Yes you yourselves know that these hands have provided 00:04:58.80\00:05:01.95 for my necessities and for those who were with me. I have shown 00:05:01.98\00:05:05.00 you in every way by laboring like this that you must support 00:05:05.03\00:05:08.31 the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he said 00:05:08.35\00:05:11.67 It is more blessed to give than to receive. What a powerful 00:05:11.70\00:05:14.97 statement. The Apostle Paul is here saying that you know... 00:05:15.01\00:05:18.24 In another place in I Corinthians he says 00:05:18.28\00:05:20.57 that as ministers he had a right as a minister to partake of the 00:05:20.60\00:05:25.69 physical necessities that he needed because he was providing 00:05:25.72\00:05:29.95 spiritual necessities to the people and yet he didn't take 00:05:29.99\00:05:34.15 those because he didn't want to run the risk of someone accusing 00:05:34.19\00:05:37.85 him of being in this for material gain. So even the 00:05:37.88\00:05:43.05 things he had a right to the Apostle Paul didn't necessarily 00:05:43.09\00:05:46.15 take. Not only did he provide for himself, he even provided 00:05:46.19\00:05:49.37 for those who were with him to set an example of unselfish 00:05:49.41\00:05:52.86 service. Powerful example, the Apostle Paul. In verse 36 it 00:05:52.89\00:05:56.27 says, And when he had said these things he knelt down and prayed 00:05:56.31\00:05:59.18 and it says they all wept and fell on his neck and kissed him 00:05:59.22\00:06:02.64 sorrowing most for the words which he spoke that they would 00:06:02.68\00:06:06.52 see his face no more. What an incredible departure but the 00:06:06.56\00:06:09.87 Apostle Paul was loved wherever he went by the church. 00:06:09.90\00:06:13.14 That's right, that's right. Well we're jumping ahead to chapter 00:06:13.18\00:06:16.54 21. I want to apologize to our viewers. Because of the size of 00:06:16.58\00:06:20.22 the book of Acts and the length of the narrative we can't be 00:06:20.25\00:06:23.93 exhaustive and there's so many things that we want to talk 00:06:23.96\00:06:27.51 about. We're going to try to hit the key points here. We just 00:06:27.54\00:06:30.90 encourage you to continue your study of the book of Acts and 00:06:30.93\00:06:34.26 drawing out these wonderful lessons here. In chapter 21 we 00:06:34.29\00:06:37.22 continue on the journey to Jerusalem. I want to key in on 00:06:37.25\00:06:40.62 verse 4. It says, And finding disciples we stayed there seven 00:06:40.65\00:06:44.41 days and they told Paul through the Spirit not to go up to 00:06:44.44\00:06:48.13 Jerusalem. No that may seem like a prohibition except for we saw 00:06:48.17\00:06:51.56 in other places we just read where he was bound in the Spirit 00:06:51.59\00:06:54.85 to go to Jerusalem. But the Spirit had warned him about what 00:06:54.88\00:06:58.53 would happen. What we see here is not a prohibition to Paul as 00:06:58.56\00:07:00.87 much, but more of a warning that he's going to befall some 00:07:00.90\00:07:05.61 difficulties there and the disciples don't want to see that 00:07:05.64\00:07:10.32 happening. Chains and tribulations. Yeah, chains and 00:07:10.35\00:07:12.68 tribulations. Now we jump on to verse 8 and he says, The next 00:07:12.71\00:07:15.76 day we who were Paul's companions departed and came to 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.92 Caesarea and entered the house of Philip the evangelist who was 00:07:18.95\00:07:22.00 one of the seven. They stayed with him. And it's interesting, 00:07:22.04\00:07:25.05 Jim, that he was one of the seven, he was one of the deacons 00:07:25.09\00:07:28.44 he was a lay person, but he was also an evangelist and I think 00:07:28.48\00:07:31.16 we need to remember. Maybe you're a deacon and often times 00:07:31.19\00:07:33.84 we think in the church of deacons as those who collect the 00:07:33.88\00:07:37.13 offering and clean up things, but we all have a responsibility 00:07:37.17\00:07:40.19 to share the gospel of Christ and I think we need to hold to 00:07:40.22\00:07:43.54 that. Now he goes on to say, Philip had four virgin daughters 00:07:43.57\00:07:46.86 who prophesied and also there was a man named Agabus who was 00:07:46.89\00:07:50.43 a prophet. We saw him in Acts chapter 11. He came down from 00:07:50.46\00:07:53.30 Jerusalem. Verse 11 says, When he had come to us, he took 00:07:53.34\00:07:56.10 Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet and said, Thus says the 00:07:56.14\00:08:00.31 Holy Spirit, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who 00:08:00.35\00:08:04.16 owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. 00:08:04.20\00:08:07.78 Again, not a prohibition but here the Spirit is telling him 00:08:07.81\00:08:11.37 that he's going to have to suffer at Jerusalem. And so then 00:08:11.40\00:08:15.03 they pleaded with him not to go and Paul says in verse 13, What 00:08:15.07\00:08:18.66 do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart. For I am 00:08:18.70\00:08:21.43 ready not only to be bound but to die at Jerusalem for the name 00:08:21.47\00:08:24.79 of the Lord Jesus. Makes me think of Jesus when Peter came 00:08:24.82\00:08:27.91 to Jesus and he said Oh Lord you won't suffer these things and 00:08:27.94\00:08:31.00 Jesus said, Get behind me Satan, you savor the things of man not 00:08:31.06\00:08:34.37 the things of God. Paul's saying Look it's hard enough for me 00:08:34.40\00:08:37.83 already. Don't make it harder. I have a mission to accomplish 00:08:37.86\00:08:41.05 and I can't be deterred from that mission. This is what I'm 00:08:41.09\00:08:44.25 called to do. Yeah, and they finally accepted 00:08:44.28\00:08:47.98 the Apostle Paul's desire. In verse 14 it says, So when he 00:08:48.02\00:08:51.57 would not be persuaded, we ceased saying, the will of the 00:08:51.60\00:08:55.08 Lord be done. Now as we continue through beginning in verse 15, 00:08:55.12\00:09:00.56 there's a section of chapter 21 that talks about what happens 00:09:00.60\00:09:05.65 when Paul comes to Jerusalem. Paul, when he arrives, he's 00:09:05.69\00:09:10.32 received by the brethren and there he meets with James and 00:09:10.35\00:09:14.46 of course James was the one who stood and spoke up at the 00:09:14.49\00:09:18.53 Jerusalem council of Acts 15. James has heard some reports and 00:09:18.57\00:09:23.77 he feels that the Apostle Paul needs to do something to offset 00:09:23.80\00:09:27.95 these reports that have come in. Basically the heart of the 00:09:27.99\00:09:33.13 report you can see in verse 20 here. It says, And when they 00:09:33.16\00:09:37.13 heard it they glorified the Lord and they said to him, You see 00:09:37.17\00:09:40.72 brother how many myriads of Jews there are who have believed 00:09:40.76\00:09:44.43 and they are all zealous of the law but they have been informed 00:09:44.47\00:09:48.29 about you that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles 00:09:48.32\00:09:52.11 to forsake Moses saying that they ought not to circumcise 00:09:52.14\00:09:55.14 their children nor to walk according to the customs. 00:09:55.17\00:09:58.87 So James is saying, People are saying, Paul, that you're 00:09:58.90\00:10:02.27 telling the Jews not to circumcise their children, not 00:10:02.31\00:10:05.61 to follow the customs and so he says what we need to do, what 00:10:05.64\00:10:09.39 I'd like to counsel you to do, and then he shares with him in 00:10:09.42\00:10:13.66 verse 23, Do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken 00:10:13.69\00:10:17.89 a vow. Take them and be purified with them and pay their expenses 00:10:17.93\00:10:21.69 So he's having him go through this purification process in the 00:10:21.73\00:10:25.58 temple at Jerusalem, hoping that all these Jews will see Paul in 00:10:25.62\00:10:29.44 the temple going through a rite that can be found in the 00:10:29.47\00:10:33.63 writings of Moses and therefore see that he really is supportive 00:10:33.67\00:10:37.82 of the writings of Moses. The problem here is that the Apostle 00:10:37.85\00:10:41.97 Paul never really did tell the Jews that they shouldn't 00:10:42.00\00:10:45.71 circumcise their children. He confirmed and affirmed the 00:10:45.74\00:10:49.85 Jerusalem decision that the Gentiles should not be required 00:10:49.88\00:10:53.92 to circumcise, but he never told the Jews who believed that they 00:10:53.95\00:10:57.64 shouldn't circumcise their children. This was a false 00:10:57.68\00:10:59.33 report. In fact, back in Acts 16 verse 3 we see where Timothy 00:10:59.37\00:11:03.75 is circumcised by the Apostle Paul. So this is clearly a false 00:11:03.78\00:11:08.32 report, and yet you almost get the sense that the leaders in 00:11:08.36\00:11:12.83 Jerusalem felt that perhaps that Paul was partly to blame 00:11:12.87\00:11:16.89 for some of the prejudice that existed and that he needed to 00:11:16.92\00:11:20.87 sort of clear up matters. Rather than defending the Apostle Paul, 00:11:20.90\00:11:25.37 and simply telling these people no that's a false report and 00:11:25.40\00:11:29.32 enumerating why, he instead counsels Paul to try to fix the 00:11:29.36\00:11:33.40 matter by appeasing those false reports and I just can't help 00:11:33.43\00:11:37.81 but think that sometimes we do the same thing. We try to 00:11:37.85\00:11:42.67 accommodate something and try to prove something that really 00:11:42.71\00:11:46.95 there was never any support for or factual evidence for in the 00:11:46.99\00:11:50.83 first place. You know sometimes as a minister I've had false 00:11:50.87\00:11:54.96 reports spoken about me and I know that I'll talk to a member 00:11:54.99\00:11:58.57 and they'll share with me, Oh so and so said this about you 00:11:58.61\00:12:02.15 Pastor. I didn't believe it but... 00:12:02.19\00:12:05.48 I didn't believe it, that's right but you wonder why they 00:12:05.52\00:12:09.59 didn't speak up when that happened and explain. And James 00:12:09.62\00:12:12.94 seems to have not or the leaders in Jerusalem, instead of 00:12:12.98\00:12:16.70 defending Paul and settling it that was, they want Paul to do 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.79 something so that they do not have to put their reputation on 00:12:19.83\00:12:23.03 the line and be associated with these problems. Instead they 00:12:23.07\00:12:25.95 wanted Paul to do this and because of that I think their 00:12:25.98\00:12:31.74 counsel becomes marred. So the problem here is that we have 00:12:31.77\00:12:37.49 these leaders in Jerusalem giving Paul an option here 00:12:37.53\00:12:41.46 to try to fix matters but when we get to verse 26 and the rest 00:12:41.50\00:12:45.18 of the chapter we find that it doesn't turn out the way that 00:12:45.22\00:12:49.14 they had hoped. Unfortunately however, we don't have time to 00:12:49.18\00:12:52.89 go into that particular matter. Next time, we're going to study 00:12:52.92\00:12:57.36 in depth how the response of the Jews when Paul came into the 00:12:57.40\00:13:01.81 temple proved that this counsel was really not the best. 00:13:01.84\00:13:05.46 So until next time, God bless you and we'll look forward to 00:13:05.49\00:13:09.07 seeing you on Books of the Book. 00:13:09.10\00:13:10.95
