Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.65\00:00:23.69 We are studying the Book of Acts. My name is Pastor Mark 00:00:23.73\00:00:26.95 Howard. I'm here with my cohost and brother Pastor Jim Howard. 00:00:26.98\00:00:31.70 Jim, the last time we were in the book of Acts we were 00:00:31.73\00:00:34.85 studying in chapter 19 about... Well several things in chapter 00:00:34.89\00:00:40.34 19 but actually we were in 18 and 19. When we came into 00:00:40.38\00:00:44.25 chapter 19 and we were looking at a rebaptism. Before we look 00:00:44.29\00:00:47.92 at that again, we're going to just revisit that as we begin 00:00:47.96\00:00:51.91 chapter 19, we're going to ask God to bless our time in the 00:00:51.94\00:00:55.54 study of his word. I'm going to invite our viewers to bow their 00:00:55.58\00:00:59.51 heads and pray with us now. Father in heaven, we do ask for 00:00:59.54\00:01:03.03 the promised Holy Spirit to guide us into truth, to give us 00:01:03.06\00:01:06.98 understanding in your word, and we ask it in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:01:07.02\00:01:11.94 We had seen in Acts chapter 19 that there were some believers 00:01:11.97\00:01:16.51 in Ephesus that had never heard of the Holy Spirit. They had 00:01:16.54\00:01:21.05 been baptized and when questioned by the Apostle Paul 00:01:21.08\00:01:24.20 into what they were baptized they said they were baptized 00:01:24.24\00:01:27.31 into John's baptism, that is John the Baptist, a baptism of 00:01:27.35\00:01:30.69 repentance. In other words, to all the knowledge that they had 00:01:30.73\00:01:34.03 they knew they needed to repent of their sins and to live 00:01:34.07\00:01:37.18 according to the will of God, but they hadn't come to an 00:01:37.22\00:01:40.50 understanding of the knowledge of Jesus Christ as the way of 00:01:40.53\00:01:44.75 salvation. So Paul preached the gospel to them and they felt a 00:01:44.78\00:01:49.71 need for rebaptism. Rebaptism is something that maybe some of 00:01:49.75\00:01:53.59 our viewers are unfamiliar with or maybe are familiar with but 00:01:53.63\00:01:57.44 didn't realize there was a biblical precedent for that. 00:01:57.48\00:02:00.40 Rebaptism is one of those things where the Bible commands 00:02:00.44\00:02:03.30 baptism. But the Bible doesn't command rebaptism. Rebaptism is 00:02:03.33\00:02:07.77 something that the Holy Spirit may lay on the heart of an 00:02:07.81\00:02:09.66 individual that in this particular case for example 00:02:09.69\00:02:13.85 feels that they have come into a fuller understanding that they 00:02:13.88\00:02:18.47 want to commit to through rebaptism. Now when Paul 00:02:18.51\00:02:22.87 rebaptized them the Bible says here in Acts chapter 19 and I'll 00:02:22.90\00:02:27.08 start with verse 5. When they heard this they were baptized 00:02:27.12\00:02:31.45 in the name of the Lord Jesus and when Paul had laid hands on 00:02:31.49\00:02:35.79 them the Holy Spirit came upon them and they spoke with 00:02:35.83\00:02:38.92 tongues and prophesied. Now it says the men were about 12 in 00:02:38.95\00:02:44.04 all. We've seen this before this idea of when the Holy 00:02:44.07\00:02:48.70 Spirit comes upon them we've seen different ways that this 00:02:48.74\00:02:53.05 has taken place. In this particular case Paul lays hands 00:02:53.09\00:02:56.66 on them and they receive the Holy Spirit. But that's not how 00:02:56.69\00:03:00.01 it has happened in every case in the book of Acts. In this case, 00:03:00.04\00:03:02.96 Paul lays hands on them and they prophesy and speak with tongues. 00:03:03.00\00:03:05.89 That's not how it happens in every baptism situation or in 00:03:05.92\00:03:08.96 every situation when the Holy Spirit comes upon individuals. 00:03:09.00\00:03:13.39 So we see that as we have said before some of these accounts in 00:03:13.42\00:03:17.40 the book of Acts are descriptive rather than being prescriptive. 00:03:17.44\00:03:20.93 In other words, they're not telling us how it has to happen, 00:03:20.97\00:03:24.85 but how it did happen and in this particular case it tells us 00:03:24.89\00:03:28.39 very little about what this looked like and if we want to 00:03:28.42\00:03:31.85 get a better picture we would be better off going to different 00:03:31.89\00:03:35.11 places in the book of Acts where it actually fleshes out what it 00:03:35.14\00:03:38.33 looked like when, for example, they received the gift of 00:03:38.36\00:03:41.96 tongues. So in this case, Paul lays hands on them, but that 00:03:42.00\00:03:45.56 didn't happen every time. 00:03:45.60\00:03:46.63 Yeah. In Acts chapter 2, for instance, we saw a very clear 00:03:46.66\00:03:49.80 picture of the gift of tongues in which they came from every 00:03:49.83\00:03:52.94 nation under heaven and the apostles preached with the gift 00:03:52.97\00:03:55.85 of tongues and they heard them speaking in their own language. 00:03:55.89\00:03:58.73 It was very specific about the gift of tongues. Here it's 00:03:58.77\00:04:01.75 really not. It just says they spoke with tongues and we can 00:04:01.79\00:04:06.34 only assume that the clearer passage is the way it actually 00:04:06.37\00:04:10.28 appeared here, so we let the clear passage inform the unclear 00:04:10.32\00:04:14.19 when we're studying the Bible. 00:04:14.23\00:04:15.71 That's exactly right and that's an important point we've made 00:04:15.75\00:04:18.71 before here that some people will take passages of scripture 00:04:18.74\00:04:23.16 that perhaps say things in a way that they want them to be or 00:04:23.19\00:04:27.10 that goes along with a certain way of thinking, but that may 00:04:27.13\00:04:31.94 not be consistent throughout scripture. Furthermore it may 00:04:31.97\00:04:36.00 be a little sketchy and if we have a passage that really isn't 00:04:36.04\00:04:40.03 very descriptive and we have another passage that is more 00:04:40.06\00:04:44.07 descriptive, we should always interpret the unclear passage 00:04:44.10\00:04:48.04 by the clear passage and not the other way around. So as we carry 00:04:48.08\00:04:53.75 on here in the book of Acts Paul moves past the rebaptism here in 00:04:53.79\00:04:59.43 verse 8 and it says, He went into the synagogue and spoke 00:04:59.46\00:05:03.19 boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading 00:05:03.23\00:05:05.77 concerning the things of the kingdom of God. But when some 00:05:05.80\00:05:09.17 were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the 00:05:09.21\00:05:12.11 way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew 00:05:12.15\00:05:16.17 the disciples reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus and this 00:05:16.21\00:05:20.27 continued for two years so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the 00:05:20.31\00:05:24.10 word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. Now one thing 00:05:24.14\00:05:27.83 we see here, Jim, is what we looked at last time. The Apostle 00:05:27.87\00:05:31.53 Paul isn't just spending a couple weeks teaching. 00:05:31.57\00:05:34.55 He's three months in the synagogue and when he finds that 00:05:34.59\00:05:38.20 he's not got a receptive audience... This is very 00:05:38.24\00:05:41.00 interesting to me because I've seen this as a minister. 00:05:41.04\00:05:44.51 When you have an audience and part of your audience is just 00:05:44.55\00:05:48.50 not really open, and resistant and sometimes they even resort 00:05:48.53\00:05:52.24 to making comments. They detract from the ones who really want to 00:05:52.27\00:05:55.99 learn. Well Paul sees the need to withdraw after three months 00:05:56.03\00:06:00.32 and then he spends an additional two years or it says this 00:06:00.35\00:06:04.58 continued for two years, it may have included that three months, 00:06:04.61\00:06:07.95 but the point is that he is here for this period of time. I think 00:06:07.99\00:06:11.30 in fact if we look at this he was here for longer than two 00:06:11.33\00:06:14.29 years, the three months were in addition and there was some 00:06:14.32\00:06:18.99 other time in reckoning that and he taught during that whole 00:06:19.03\00:06:23.66 period of time discipling these new believers. 00:06:23.70\00:06:26.23 That's right. Well we pick up in verse 11. There's some exciting 00:06:26.26\00:06:31.63 things that begin to happen here in Ephesus. It says in verse 11, 00:06:31.67\00:06:37.01 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul so that 00:06:37.04\00:06:40.68 even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to 00:06:40.72\00:06:44.57 the sick and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went 00:06:44.61\00:06:49.56 out of them. Now the closest we can probably see something like 00:06:49.59\00:06:53.85 this in the life of Jesus was when the woman with the flow of 00:06:53.89\00:06:58.19 blood, she needed to be healed and she couldn't get to Jesus 00:06:58.23\00:07:01.88 because of the crowd and so she just reached out and touched the 00:07:01.91\00:07:05.53 hem of his garment. And just from the hem of his garment 00:07:05.56\00:07:09.37 virtue came out from Jesus and brought healing to her. There's 00:07:09.40\00:07:13.86 danger in looking at this and seeing aprons and handkerchiefs 00:07:13.90\00:07:18.40 and thinking that there's some power in a relic or something 00:07:18.43\00:07:23.72 like that. Exactly. Any time there was healing regardless 00:07:23.75\00:07:28.51 of how it came, whether it was through things like this or 00:07:28.54\00:07:32.57 without there were always a couple clear characteristics: 00:07:32.61\00:07:36.03 There was always Divine power and there was always faith by 00:07:36.07\00:07:39.43 the one who was being healed or the ones, at a minimum, who were 00:07:39.46\00:07:44.12 bringing the person to be healed. 00:07:44.15\00:07:45.18 That's right and faith in the person of Jesus Christ and not 00:07:45.21\00:07:48.19 in an article of a magic charm. 00:07:48.23\00:07:51.02 That's right. Excellent. Yet when we talk about this we're 00:07:51.05\00:07:55.27 going to see that faith is the important element that some 00:07:55.30\00:07:59.04 people don't understand and those that we're about to read 00:07:59.08\00:08:02.15 about didn't seem to understand it. And you keep reading in 00:08:02.19\00:08:05.53 verse 13, it says, Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists 00:08:05.56\00:08:09.68 took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over 00:08:09.72\00:08:14.41 those who had evil spirits. So these were some who were going 00:08:14.45\00:08:19.13 around trying to mimic what the Apostle Paul was doing in 00:08:19.16\00:08:23.78 calling evil spirits out and so they speak and say, We exorcise 00:08:23.81\00:08:29.68 you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches. And it says, Also 00:08:29.72\00:08:34.46 there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did 00:08:34.49\00:08:38.18 so. Now you get a picture here that they're seeing this 00:08:38.22\00:08:41.94 incredible power and they're thinking, Hey, maybe we can 00:08:41.97\00:08:45.62 get the benefit of this power. They wanted to use this power. 00:08:45.65\00:08:49.65 It brings to memory a guy named Elymus. 00:08:49.69\00:08:53.37 Yes, exactly. We had a sorcerer who was doing that previously 00:08:53.41\00:08:57.92 and we have examples like Simon trying to buy the Holy Spirit. 00:08:57.96\00:09:01.43 That's right. We have Ananias and Sapphira who were wanting 00:09:01.47\00:09:05.61 the benefits of the common pool without having to sacrifice in 00:09:05.64\00:09:09.75 commitment of actually surrendering the full costs back 00:09:09.78\00:09:12.82 in chapter 5 when we studied that, of their land that they 00:09:12.86\00:09:16.35 had sold. So we recognize from this a couple of things. 00:09:16.39\00:09:21.04 First, they wanted the benefits of the church without the 00:09:21.07\00:09:24.92 commitment. You can't have the benefits of the gospel without 00:09:24.96\00:09:28.88 the commitment and the surrender to Christ. And secondly, they 00:09:28.91\00:09:32.82 wanted to use the Spirit instead of being used by the Spirit. 00:09:32.86\00:09:36.74 That's right. We've got to understand that the Spirit is 00:09:36.77\00:09:40.01 not a tool that we wield but the Holy Spirit is the power of God 00:09:40.05\00:09:46.09 who is God Himself who wants to use us and we need to go as the 00:09:46.13\00:09:50.68 Spirit directs and that's not exactly how this was. I'm sure 00:09:50.72\00:09:56.61 that the sons of Sceva who were here wanting to cast out this 00:09:56.65\00:10:01.59 spirit if the Spirit of God would actually have given them 00:10:01.63\00:10:05.39 the power to do that, I'm sure that they would have been happy 00:10:05.43\00:10:09.16 about that. But then if the Spirit of God would have told 00:10:09.19\00:10:12.03 them to go, as Paul did, into a town where they would be dragged 00:10:12.07\00:10:16.41 out and stoned, they probably wouldn't have done that. 00:10:16.44\00:10:19.38 And that's the difference. See we can't pick and choose where 00:10:19.41\00:10:22.88 God will use us. We need to be willing to go where God will 00:10:22.92\00:10:26.35 lead us. So as a result they didn't have much success. 00:10:26.39\00:10:30.76 It says in verse 15, The evil spirit answered and said, Jesus 00:10:30.79\00:10:37.23 I know and Paul I know but who are you? The Greek in this says 00:10:37.27\00:10:43.67 Jesus I know meaning and the word for know is different 00:10:43.71\00:10:49.10 between Jesus I know and Paul I know. It's Jesus I know meaning 00:10:49.13\00:10:54.31 I know the authority, I acknowledge and recognize the 00:10:54.35\00:10:58.09 authority. Paul I know in a sort of acquaintance way, I'm 00:10:58.13\00:11:02.49 familiar with Paul and then literally it's but you who are 00:11:02.52\00:11:07.15 you? So you get this picture that if it were Paul who was 00:11:07.18\00:11:11.67 claiming the name of Jesus, the spirit would have responded 00:11:11.70\00:11:15.51 differently. But just like Jesus could tell the difference 00:11:15.55\00:11:19.44 between someone who had faith and someone who was without 00:11:19.47\00:11:23.30 faith but was just trying to use the gospel in some way for their 00:11:23.33\00:11:28.74 own benefit. In the same was this evil spirit here can 00:11:28.78\00:11:32.36 clearly see that there's a difference. There's no real 00:11:32.39\00:11:35.86 power here. The spirit knows that there is no power when 00:11:35.89\00:11:39.29 there's no faith. And I go back to that story of the woman with 00:11:39.32\00:11:43.04 the flow of blood and how all those people were pressing up 00:11:43.07\00:11:46.99 against Jesus when she reached and touched his garment and they 00:11:47.03\00:11:50.91 didn't receive the virtue and power that came from Jesus. 00:11:50.95\00:11:53.61 But her faith made it effective and she was able to receive the 00:11:53.65\00:11:57.51 power of Jesus because of that faith. The sons of Sceva didn't 00:11:57.55\00:12:01.37 have that faith. They thought that they could have the 00:12:01.41\00:12:04.15 benefits of the gospel without having that type of living 00:12:04.19\00:12:07.79 active faith and as a result they were very embarrassed 00:12:07.83\00:12:11.02 because in verse 16 it says, Then the man in whom the evil 00:12:11.06\00:12:14.76 spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them and prevailed 00:12:14.79\00:12:18.71 against them so that they fled out of that house naked and 00:12:18.74\00:12:22.62 wounded. And very embarrassed I'm sure. 00:12:22.65\00:12:24.17 Wow, amazing! There's a lot in this. In fact, the first thing 00:12:24.21\00:12:30.11 that grabs my attention is Jesus I know and Paul I know but who 00:12:30.15\00:12:35.83 are you? These are people who are not committed to the Lord. 00:12:35.86\00:12:40.24 And Jesus said there are only two masters, you're either 00:12:40.27\00:12:43.74 serving one or the other. If they're not serving the Lord 00:12:43.77\00:12:46.74 they're serving the other master and the other master doesn't 00:12:46.77\00:12:49.69 even know the names of his own servants but he sure knows the 00:12:49.73\00:12:52.72 name of the Lord's servants. That's interesting. And then 00:12:52.75\00:12:55.67 furthermore these guys are using the name of Jesus like a good 00:12:55.71\00:12:59.22 luck charm. They think they can just take the name of Jesus 00:12:59.26\00:13:02.50 whenever it suits them, as you've touched on a little bit 00:13:02.53\00:13:05.71 here and I wonder to myself how many Christians use the name of 00:13:05.74\00:13:11.07 Jesus as a good luck charm, something that gains us some 00:13:11.10\00:13:15.72 kind of benefit. I can't help but think about an experience 00:13:15.76\00:13:19.52 I had once where my wife and I were looking to have some 00:13:19.56\00:13:23.26 service done and we looked in the phone book and there was an 00:13:23.29\00:13:27.75 ad for a service contractor with a little fish symbol which is 00:13:27.78\00:13:31.68 something that Christians use on a fairly regular basis to 00:13:31.71\00:13:34.65 advertise that they were Christian. The idea is, I'm a 00:13:34.68\00:13:37.31 Christian so I'm going to be honest and what have you. 00:13:37.34\00:13:39.90 Well that just wasn't' the case when we ended up... You know 00:13:39.93\00:13:43.41 I had to think after the fact that this person wasn't much of 00:13:43.45\00:13:46.59 a Christian. Why are they having this symbol? Because they 00:13:46.62\00:13:49.09 figured if I put that in there I'm going to gain people's 00:13:49.12\00:13:51.52 confidence because they're going to think I'm an honest person. 00:13:51.55\00:13:55.28 This particular business was using the name of Jesus to suit 00:13:55.31\00:13:59.01 their own purposes. So were these itinerant exorcists. 00:13:59.04\00:14:04.10 We're going to see a little bit more about that but we need to 00:14:04.13\00:14:06.30 take a break and when we come back from the break, we're going 00:14:06.34\00:14:09.12 to come back to Acts chapter 19 and we're going to look at 00:14:09.15\00:14:13.01 what the Bible goes on to say about this work in Ephesus. 00:14:13.05\00:14:16.87 So stay with us. We'll be back in a moment. 00:14:16.90\00:14:18.78
