Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.25\00:00:02.76 We're studying here in Acts chapter 18 and, Mark, before the 00:00:02.80\00:00:08.12 break we were taking a look at yet another example of Paul 00:00:08.15\00:00:13.09 being brought to a little trial and once more there's a 00:00:13.12\00:00:17.99 deliverance given and we left off right at the end of verse 17 00:00:18.02\00:00:23.18 as we were coming in to Paul returning to Antioch and we'll 00:00:23.22\00:00:28.19 begin reading in verse 18. It says, So Paul still remained a 00:00:28.23\00:00:32.78 good while then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for 00:00:32.82\00:00:37.53 Syria and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. Now we were 00:00:37.57\00:00:42.25 introduced to Priscilla and Aquila earlier in the chapter 00:00:42.29\00:00:46.91 and they seemed to be a couple who have great promise in terms 00:00:46.94\00:00:53.83 of their fervency and their active part in the church. The 00:00:53.87\00:00:58.65 Apostle Paul seems to be taking a special interest in them 00:00:58.68\00:01:03.39 wanting to develop them and grow them and so we see, I believe, 00:01:03.43\00:01:07.65 in this particular passage is an example of what we talked about 00:01:07.68\00:01:11.35 right before the break and that is that the Apostle Paul was 00:01:11.39\00:01:15.28 focusing on discipling these two, Priscilla and Aquila. 00:01:15.31\00:01:19.15 He kept them with him. You know you look at Jesus and the 00:01:19.18\00:01:23.45 disciples. What made him so effective. Well he took them 00:01:23.48\00:01:27.71 with him wherever he went and he let them see what 00:01:27.75\00:01:33.09 Christianity was about, what it meant to live a righteous life 00:01:33.13\00:01:36.43 by going with him. And they were able to see how to minister to 00:01:36.47\00:01:39.74 others by watching Jesus minister to others. They were 00:01:39.77\00:01:43.33 able to see how he related to people and know how to relate to 00:01:43.37\00:01:46.82 people. Sometimes we think discipleship is sitting people 00:01:46.85\00:01:51.68 in a classroom and teaching them doctrinal matters and there's 00:01:51.72\00:01:55.58 a portion of that that's true, but that's not all that you see 00:01:55.61\00:01:59.98 here. There's a very real living training that goes on that is 00:02:00.02\00:02:04.35 from modeling for someone. 00:02:04.39\00:02:05.68 Yeah. That makes me think of what you were saying there on 00:02:05.71\00:02:07.90 Jesus' discipleship. Mark chapter 3 and verse 14, in 00:02:07.94\00:02:12.41 Mark 3:14 he tells us, Then he, speaking of Jesus, appointed 12 00:02:12.44\00:02:16.88 that they might be with him and that he might send them out to 00:02:16.92\00:02:20.90 preach. So that's interesting that he wasn't just sending them 00:02:20.94\00:02:24.50 out to preach but he wanted to be with them and we see that in 00:02:24.54\00:02:27.64 the practice of Jesus and the life of Jesus that he spent that 00:02:27.67\00:02:32.25 time and modeled that ministry to them and we see it being 00:02:32.29\00:02:36.10 repeated in the lives of the disciples that they picked up 00:02:36.13\00:02:39.99 much of their ministry queues from being with Jesus in those 00:02:40.02\00:02:43.84 real experiences. That's right. Real training. 00:02:43.88\00:02:47.49 Hands on training. So he took Priscilla and Aquila with him 00:02:47.52\00:02:51.46 and it says he had his hair cut off at Cenchrea for he had 00:02:51.49\00:02:55.24 taken a vow. Now it's not real specific about what this vow 00:02:55.28\00:03:00.23 was. It could be that in an effort to have sympathy with the 00:03:00.27\00:03:05.35 Jews or maintain favor that he took a Nazarite vow, a private 00:03:05.39\00:03:09.56 Nazarite vow, or something of that nature. Often times they 00:03:09.60\00:03:13.82 would take a private vow in response to a great deliverance 00:03:13.86\00:03:18.05 or almost as a means of gratitude and rededicating the 00:03:18.08\00:03:21.54 life because of some great thing and of course we see him here 00:03:21.57\00:03:25.29 in Corinth experience this deliverance and so it could be 00:03:25.32\00:03:28.95 that he took a vow in relation to that. But ultimately we know 00:03:28.99\00:03:32.27 that he made this commitment and that's why he had his hair 00:03:32.30\00:03:35.67 cut off and so we can imagine Paul walking around without 00:03:35.70\00:03:39.00 hair. I guess that's why Luke put that in there. Then verse 19 00:03:39.03\00:03:42.88 says he came to Ephesus and he left them, and you would 00:03:42.92\00:03:48.99 understand that to be Priscilla and Aquila, he left them there. 00:03:49.02\00:03:53.89 That adds another dimension to discipleship. Here he says, Okay 00:03:53.92\00:03:59.17 I've spent time with you, you have learned from me. Now it's 00:03:59.21\00:04:04.39 times for you to leave the nest and to begin to use your own 00:04:04.43\00:04:09.06 faculties and begin to exercise your own faith and certainly 00:04:09.09\00:04:12.90 they were doing that already but in a very real way and a 00:04:12.94\00:04:16.08 greater way than when Paul was with them when he was the most 00:04:16.12\00:04:19.30 prominent figure. They now were able to witness to others 00:04:19.34\00:04:22.81 and we see that later when they with a very prominent man, 00:04:22.84\00:04:26.56 Apollos, they have opportunity to explain the way of God more 00:04:26.59\00:04:30.85 clearly to him. So this is a good example that I think we 00:04:30.89\00:04:34.92 need to take note of because sometimes in our churches we 00:04:34.95\00:04:39.97 we have those who feel I can't possibly go and minister to 00:04:40.01\00:04:44.42 others from the Bible because I don't feel qualified and what 00:04:44.46\00:04:48.83 have you, and sometimes the people who are making that 00:04:48.87\00:04:52.97 statement have been in the church for 20, 30 years and the 00:04:53.01\00:04:56.89 hope is that during that period they're watching, they're 00:04:56.92\00:05:00.73 learning. All their learning is for the purpose of then turning 00:05:00.77\00:05:04.47 around and using what they've learned to minister to others. 00:05:04.51\00:05:08.14 The only way sometimes to really get that type of education is to 00:05:08.18\00:05:14.70 break free from the training and go and do it. And you know I've 00:05:14.74\00:05:21.43 heard it said that men learn to swim in the water and not on the 00:05:21.46\00:05:27.35 land. So we've got to get at it and that's really the training. 00:05:27.38\00:05:33.23 So we see that kind of discipleship going on here. 00:05:33.27\00:05:35.51 Then it says in verse 20, When they asked him to stay a longer 00:05:35.54\00:05:40.09 time... Oh I don't think I read the last part of verse 19. 00:05:40.12\00:05:43.61 But he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the 00:05:43.65\00:05:46.69 Jews. So the Apostle Paul again reasoning with the Jews. When 00:05:46.73\00:05:49.69 they asked him to stay a longer time with them, he did not 00:05:49.72\00:05:53.61 consent, but took leave of them saying, I must by all means 00:05:53.64\00:05:57.02 keep this coming feast in Jerusalem, but I will return 00:05:57.05\00:06:00.36 again to you, God willing. And he sailed from Ephesus. So we 00:06:00.39\00:06:04.55 see here he promises to come back to Ephesus and we find that 00:06:04.59\00:06:08.41 he does keep that promise. When he leaves them he says I'll come 00:06:08.45\00:06:12.24 back to you, God willing. You know, we hear people say that 00:06:12.27\00:06:16.11 sometimes. I'll see you at church, Lord willing, and it's a 00:06:16.14\00:06:19.84 saying of sorts. But in the Apostle Paul's life it was a 00:06:19.87\00:06:23.49 very real experience. Just back in chapter 16, you remember when 00:06:23.53\00:06:28.96 we were talking about the Macedonian call and before the 00:06:29.00\00:06:33.65 apostle went to Macedonia, he had wanted to go to Asia, but it 00:06:33.69\00:06:37.92 said in chapter 16 and verse 6, They were forbidden by the Holy 00:06:37.95\00:06:42.10 Spirit to preach the word in Asia. Then later they were going 00:06:42.14\00:06:46.26 to go into Bithynia but the Spirit did not permit them. 00:06:46.29\00:06:50.53 So there were cases where the Apostle Paul wanted to go 00:06:50.56\00:06:54.73 somewhere but the Lord was not willing. So he's being very real 00:06:54.77\00:06:58.71 here when he says, I'll come back to you, God willing, but if 00:06:58.75\00:07:02.45 the Lord doesn't will then I'll be going somewhere else and we 00:07:02.48\00:07:06.14 need to have that same flexibility in our own life to 00:07:06.18\00:07:10.50 be able to go where the Lord leads us. 00:07:10.53\00:07:12.05 That's right. It's also interesting, Jim, that he has a 00:07:12.08\00:07:14.72 clear spiritual plan and we may say well that's because he's the 00:07:14.76\00:07:17.94 Apostle Paul. But I think that we really need to take to heart 00:07:17.97\00:07:21.46 that some of us make big plans for our lives, we make plans for 00:07:21.49\00:07:24.41 our families, we make plans for vacations, we make plans for a 00:07:24.44\00:07:27.32 job to try to get a promotion what have you, and yet when it 00:07:27.36\00:07:30.21 comes to our spiritual lives and for our own personal 00:07:30.24\00:07:33.75 spiritual growth many of us make no real plans at all. We just 00:07:33.78\00:07:37.82 say well I'll be in church next week and that's not a spiritual 00:07:37.86\00:07:41.86 plan. Paul had plans. He had plans for witnessing and what 00:07:41.89\00:07:45.94 have you and in this case he mentions a plan to go to the 00:07:45.97\00:07:49.49 feast in Jerusalem. I think there's an important point to be 00:07:49.53\00:07:53.41 made there, too. I know I've been asked by certain Christians 00:07:53.45\00:07:56.84 if we are to be keeping these feasts and I'll point to the 00:07:56.88\00:08:00.09 Apostle Paul and say well Paul kept the feasts. Well we really 00:08:00.12\00:08:03.07 haven't found that. We're all the way up to chapter 18 in the 00:08:03.10\00:08:06.17 book of Acts and we don't have one occurrence of Paul desiring 00:08:06.21\00:08:10.42 to keep the feasts. Here he obviously does but we don't see 00:08:10.46\00:08:14.41 him keeping all the feasts of Passover and of unleavened 00:08:14.45\00:08:19.35 bread and of Pentecost and of the day of Atonement and the 00:08:19.39\00:08:23.23 feast of booths and all these. We don't see that. He had a 00:08:23.27\00:08:26.85 desire to go but we don't see this as a customary practice 00:08:26.88\00:08:30.17 like for example his observance of the Sabbath. I think that 00:08:30.21\00:08:33.46 needs to be noted here. Now we actually move on here to 00:08:33.50\00:08:38.45 in verse 24 the Bible says, Now a certain Jew named Apollos, 00:08:38.49\00:08:41.88 born in Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the scriptures 00:08:41.92\00:08:45.28 came to Ephesus. This man had been instructed in the way of 00:08:45.32\00:08:48.69 the Lord and being fervent in spirit he spoke and taught 00:08:48.72\00:08:52.55 accurately the things of the Lord though he knew only the 00:08:52.58\00:08:56.33 baptism of John. So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. 00:08:56.37\00:09:00.44 When Aquila and Priscilla heard him they took him aside and 00:09:00.48\00:09:04.70 explained to him the way of God more accurately. And the Bible 00:09:04.73\00:09:08.91 says in verse 27, When he desired to cross to Achaia the 00:09:08.95\00:09:12.56 brethren wrote exhorting the disciples to receive him and 00:09:12.59\00:09:15.73 when he arrived he greatly helped those who had believed 00:09:15.76\00:09:19.41 through grace for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly 00:09:19.45\00:09:23.03 showing from the scriptures that Jesus is Christ. Now he didn't 00:09:23.07\00:09:26.55 have this understanding before but here we see the discipleship 00:09:26.59\00:09:30.04 again, this time Priscilla and Aquila meet this man who is 00:09:30.07\00:09:35.10 promising and they see the abilities and they undertake... 00:09:35.14\00:09:38.87 It's interesting also, he was eloquent, he was mighty in the 00:09:38.91\00:09:42.43 scriptures, he was educated. Priscilla and Aquila could have 00:09:42.46\00:09:45.71 said, Who are we? But they saw that they had a part that they 00:09:45.74\00:09:48.96 could play in discipling him and giving him this more 00:09:48.99\00:09:52.13 accurate knowledge. So they disciple Apollos and now Apollos 00:09:52.16\00:09:56.56 becomes a mighty worker in the church as well. 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.20 That's right. That's powerful. I like the fact that Apollos 00:09:59.24\00:10:03.09 was it says an eloquent man, mighty in the scriptures. 00:10:03.12\00:10:07.22 You get the sense that he had influence. Sometimes we avoid 00:10:07.25\00:10:11.31 those who are of the higher classes. I've noticed that 00:10:11.35\00:10:16.22 sometimes we recognize that there's a more fertile openness 00:10:16.25\00:10:21.23 to the gospel amongst those who are not affluent or who sense 00:10:21.27\00:10:26.55 then need more and so we tend to focus on those areas because 00:10:26.58\00:10:30.76 we feel that the responses are greater, but just because that 00:10:30.80\00:10:34.94 may be true in many cases, we should not be avoiding and 00:10:34.98\00:10:39.27 anyways we should be focusing on some of these who have 00:10:39.30\00:10:43.53 allowed the things of this world to blind them to the power of 00:10:43.56\00:10:47.28 the gospel and to their need of salvation. We need to be 00:10:47.32\00:10:49.59 focusing on this same class of Apollos. Well, in chapter 19 we 00:10:49.62\00:10:53.68 we come into another story and I want to bring this in during 00:10:53.71\00:10:57.33 this episode and then next time we'll cover the rest of chapter 00:10:57.36\00:11:00.94 19. In verse 1, it says, It happened while Apollos was at 00:11:00.98\00:11:04.06 Corinth that Paul, having passed through the upper regions came 00:11:04.10\00:11:07.20 to Ephesus and finding some disciples he said, Did you 00:11:07.24\00:11:10.11 receive the Holy Spirit when you believed. So they said, we 00:11:10.15\00:11:12.37 have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit. 00:11:12.41\00:11:14.56 And they said, Into what then were you baptized. So they said, 00:11:14.59\00:11:19.73 Into John's baptism. Then Paul said, John indeed baptized with 00:11:19.76\00:11:24.87 the baptism of repentance saying to the people that they 00:11:24.90\00:11:27.63 should believe on him who would come after him, that is on 00:11:27.67\00:11:30.63 Christ Jesus. When they heard this they were baptized in the 00:11:30.66\00:11:33.73 name of the Lord Jesus and when Paul had laid hands on them the 00:11:33.77\00:11:36.80 Holy Spirit came upon them and they spoke with tongues and 00:11:36.84\00:11:39.91 prophesied and the men were about 12 in all. Now you read 00:11:39.94\00:11:42.94 the story and you recognize this is the one clear example we have 00:11:42.98\00:11:48.22 in the New Testament of a rebaptism, as it were. John the 00:11:48.25\00:11:53.36 Baptist was teaching a baptism of repentance. The Jewish nation 00:11:53.40\00:11:58.13 they understood the law of God and the will of God as given in 00:11:58.16\00:12:02.86 the Old Testament scriptures and they knew that there was 00:12:02.89\00:12:07.93 need to repent from sin, but it doesn't appear that these 00:12:07.97\00:12:12.28 individuals had an understanding of Christ as the Messiah. 00:12:12.32\00:12:16.19 At least they didn't have the evidence for Jesus as the 00:12:16.23\00:12:20.03 Messiah and so there was no real way that the Holy Spirit could 00:12:20.07\00:12:22.58 do the type of work that he wanted to do. So they were 00:12:22.62\00:12:26.40 rebaptized with this new greater understanding and that's why 00:12:26.44\00:12:29.84 even today some who come into a greater understanding of certain 00:12:29.87\00:12:33.24 biblical truths will be rebaptized. Then it concludes by 00:12:33.28\00:12:37.60 this miraculous once again the Holy Spirit coming upon them. 00:12:37.64\00:12:41.93 We've seen that in different places. It's different in 00:12:41.97\00:12:44.49 certain places. Here they laid hands, other places they didn't 00:12:44.52\00:12:47.75 but ultimately this power attended the early church and 00:12:47.78\00:12:50.96 it attended them here after this rebaptism. Well I want to 00:12:51.00\00:12:54.19 dive further into chapter 19, but we've run out of times once 00:12:54.23\00:12:57.88 more. So we look forward once again to studying with you on 00:12:57.91\00:13:01.53 Books of the Book. We'll see you next time. 00:13:01.56\00:13:03.42
