Welcome to Books of the Book. My name is Mark Howard and I'm 00:00:23.02\00:00:26.54 a pastor in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day 00:00:26.57\00:00:28.21 Adventists as well as my brother Jim here who is my co-host. He's 00:00:28.25\00:00:31.52 also a pastor. He's on one side of the state of Michigan and I'm 00:00:31.55\00:00:34.65 on the other and occasionally we see each other when we go to 00:00:34.68\00:00:38.99 places like this and study the book of Acts. We are here. We've 00:00:39.03\00:00:42.73 been going through the book of Acts chapter by chapter pretty 00:00:42.76\00:00:46.04 much and in our last time together, Jim, we were studying 00:00:46.08\00:00:49.94 about Paul in Athens and how when Paul was in Athens his 00:00:49.98\00:00:53.77 heart was burdened with the fact that the city was overtaken with 00:00:53.81\00:00:58.76 idolatry and that those individuals hadn't had the 00:00:58.79\00:01:02.41 opportunity to hear the gospel message. We see Paul laboring 00:01:02.45\00:01:06.31 there in Athens and he worked very diligently to try to 00:01:06.34\00:01:10.66 present the gospel in terms to meet the minds of the 00:01:10.70\00:01:14.95 philosophers of Athens. But we find at the end of his time with 00:01:14.99\00:01:19.81 them that his results were not what they had typically been. 00:01:19.84\00:01:24.50 We find a shift in his ministry as he comes into chapter 18. 00:01:24.54\00:01:28.42 The Bible says... In fact before we go into reading the Bible 00:01:28.46\00:01:32.67 our custom has been to ask the Lord to bless our time. So I'd 00:01:32.71\00:01:35.76 invite our viewers to bow their heads and we're going to ask 00:01:35.79\00:01:39.26 God to bless our study of his word. Father in heaven, as we 00:01:39.30\00:01:42.70 turn our attention to your word now we just pray that the Spirit 00:01:42.74\00:01:45.66 of Truth would lead us into truth, not just intellectual 00:01:45.69\00:01:48.95 truth, Lord, but truth in our hearts and in our lives and we 00:01:48.98\00:01:52.21 ask and pray in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:01:52.24\00:01:53.60 In Acts chapter 18 verse 1, the Bible says, After these things 00:01:53.64\00:01:58.28 Paul departed from Athens and went to Corinth and he found 00:01:58.32\00:02:02.89 a certain Jew named Aquila. Now before we comment on that, I was 00:02:02.93\00:02:06.35 just going to say we ended our last program with I believe it 00:02:06.39\00:02:10.77 was I Corinthians chapter 2 and verse 2 where Paul says, and 00:02:10.80\00:02:14.25 it's coming right into this ministry in Corinth from Athens. 00:02:14.28\00:02:17.70 I determined to know nothing but Jesus Christ and him 00:02:17.73\00:02:20.78 crucified. In other words, the apostle realized that the most 00:02:20.82\00:02:24.30 power he ever had when he preached was not trying to be 00:02:24.33\00:02:27.50 eloquent, but preaching the simplicity of the gospel of 00:02:27.54\00:02:30.64 Christ. So he comes into Corinth with that mindset. The Bible 00:02:30.68\00:02:35.79 says, He found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus 00:02:35.82\00:02:40.05 who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla 00:02:40.09\00:02:44.25 because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome 00:02:44.29\00:02:47.93 and he came to them. So because he was of the same trade 00:02:47.96\00:02:52.56 he stayed with them and worked for by occupation they were tent 00:02:52.60\00:02:57.64 makers and he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath and 00:02:57.67\00:03:00.89 persuaded both Jews and Greeks. A couple of things grab my 00:03:00.92\00:03:03.85 attention here. First of all Aquila and Priscilla, these 00:03:03.88\00:03:07.66 tent makers. Paul joins with them. In all the work that Paul 00:03:07.69\00:03:11.64 was doing Paul supported himself by manual labor and helped to 00:03:11.68\00:03:15.11 support those of his ministry like Luke and Timothy and others 00:03:15.15\00:03:18.84 that he took with him. Manual labor was not something that was 00:03:18.88\00:03:23.22 beneath the Apostle Paul. It's interesting that if you go back 00:03:23.25\00:03:27.56 into the Old Testament scriptures you understand and 00:03:27.59\00:03:30.10 and you look at the culture of Judaism itself it was required 00:03:30.14\00:03:33.52 that every Jewish boy learn a trade that he could use 00:03:33.55\00:03:39.91 throughout his life no matter what else he happened to do. 00:03:39.95\00:03:43.08 Paul had learned the trade of tent making and he puts it into 00:03:43.11\00:03:47.49 practice with this couple. Furthermore, it says in verse 4 00:03:47.53\00:03:51.88 that he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath and 00:03:51.91\00:03:53.71 persuaded both Jews and Greeks. It's interesting, Jim, to me 00:03:53.75\00:03:57.01 that everywhere the Apostle Paul goes he starts working. We don't 00:03:57.05\00:04:00.68 see that Paul went to Corinth and he'd had a hard time in 00:04:00.71\00:04:03.49 Athens and so he took a couple weeks off, he went fishing, he 00:04:03.52\00:04:07.08 went sightseeing, he went and tried to get a tan on the beach 00:04:07.12\00:04:11.33 He's right back at work and every place he goes we find this 00:04:11.37\00:04:15.55 phrase, He reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath and 00:04:15.58\00:04:20.34 persuaded both Jews and Greeks. He had a fixed purpose of 00:04:20.38\00:04:24.44 preaching the gospel of Christ and seeing souls converted. 00:04:24.47\00:04:28.46 That's right. Well let's pick up in verse 5 where it says, When 00:04:28.50\00:04:33.20 Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by 00:04:33.24\00:04:37.60 the Spirit and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. 00:04:37.64\00:04:41.97 Here's a little bit of that emphasis on Christ and him 00:04:42.00\00:04:46.45 crucified. We see that in Corinth as we are about to see 00:04:46.49\00:04:50.04 the results were very good because of this. It makes me 00:04:50.08\00:04:54.32 think about that attempt he made in Athens to appeal to the 00:04:54.35\00:04:58.52 intellectual philosophy of those in Athens and how sometimes in 00:04:58.56\00:05:03.88 our day we find that we want to meet the minds of people in 00:05:03.92\00:05:08.66 their particular generation or their particular status of 00:05:08.70\00:05:13.41 situation and certainly we need to be sensitive to those things, 00:05:13.44\00:05:17.50 but when it comes right down to it, sometimes we put our 00:05:17.54\00:05:21.81 emphasis on trying to be relevant to people above the 00:05:21.84\00:05:25.78 fact that the Bible itself is relevant and the gospel is 00:05:25.81\00:05:29.82 always relevant, transcendent across all cultures and generations and we should 00:05:29.86\00:05:33.84 recognize what Paul recognized that you know what 00:05:33.87\00:05:37.43 happened there in Athens, while it was a good attempt, really 00:05:37.47\00:05:39.96 didn't bear a lot of fruit. And what he did here in the 00:05:39.99\00:05:43.64 simplicity of the gospel just speaking to the heart of the men 00:05:43.68\00:05:48.90 and women in Corinth and really appealing to the gospel of 00:05:48.94\00:05:53.47 repentance and forgiveness in Christ, simply by giving that 00:05:53.50\00:05:57.59 gospel we see a very different result here in Corinth. Now if 00:05:57.63\00:06:01.15 we keep reading, it says in verse 6, But when they opposed 00:06:01.19\00:06:04.64 him and blasphemed, he shook his garments. Now first of all our 00:06:04.68\00:06:08.88 viewers need to understand when he shook his garments that was a 00:06:08.91\00:06:13.08 symbolic representation of shaking, similar to when they 00:06:13.11\00:06:19.00 shook the dust off their feet against them. It was to say, We 00:06:19.04\00:06:22.78 made you the offer, the invitation and you have 00:06:22.81\00:06:25.92 rejected it and therefore our hands are clean of the matter. 00:06:25.96\00:06:30.84 That's pretty much described as he continues and it says in the 00:06:30.87\00:06:35.11 next part of the verse, he says to them, Your blood be upon your 00:06:35.14\00:06:39.60 own heads, I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles. 00:06:39.63\00:06:43.18 Now when we read this particular passage, it says, From now on 00:06:43.21\00:06:47.52 I will go to the Gentiles, we need to recognize that he's only 00:06:47.56\00:06:51.56 talking about here in Corinth. He's been preaching to Jews and 00:06:51.60\00:06:54.75 Gentiles and he will continue to teach Jews. In fact, later 00:06:54.79\00:07:00.05 when he gets to Ephesus in chapter 18 and verse 19, it says 00:07:00.09\00:07:04.03 that he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the 00:07:04.07\00:07:07.94 Jews. So he's just talking about these particular Jews that have 00:07:07.98\00:07:11.37 rejected him. He's not going to continue ministering to them in 00:07:11.41\00:07:15.15 Corinth. In verse 7 it says, And he departed from there and 00:07:15.18\00:07:18.58 entered the house of a certain man named Justus, one who 00:07:18.62\00:07:21.95 worshipped God whose house was next door to the synagogue. Then 00:07:21.99\00:07:25.82 Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord 00:07:25.85\00:07:29.51 with all his household and many of the Corinthians hearing 00:07:29.54\00:07:33.13 believed and were baptized. Now a couple of things we're noting 00:07:33.17\00:07:37.25 here. Number one, we have another example of not only 00:07:37.28\00:07:39.94 Crispus but all his household and you see the power of the 00:07:39.98\00:07:44.86 influence that someone can have on their family when they make a 00:07:44.90\00:07:50.75 right decision. We need to remember that we don't live in 00:07:50.78\00:07:54.11 a vacuum and when we make decisions for Christ we have a 00:07:54.15\00:07:57.94 sphere of influence. When we make a decision against Christ 00:07:57.97\00:08:02.97 we have a sphere of influence. I think about our youngest 00:08:03.01\00:08:07.94 brother, Ron. When I was growing up, I grew up in a very worldly 00:08:07.98\00:08:13.81 environment and without the Lord and he kind of patterned 00:08:13.84\00:08:18.08 his life in the same way. I remember thinking about after 00:08:18.12\00:08:23.94 my conversion how awful it was that he had had me as a model. 00:08:23.97\00:08:28.99 Fortunately I later had the privilege of baptizing him and 00:08:29.02\00:08:33.77 he's with the Lord and serving the Lord fervently. But we just 00:08:33.81\00:08:37.19 need to think about that. All through the book of Acts we see 00:08:37.22\00:08:40.50 the power of influence, not just of the apostles, but of everyone 00:08:40.53\00:08:43.78 in their own sphere. That's right and I would like to 00:08:43.81\00:08:46.43 appeal to our viewers, whether in your own experience or maybe 00:08:46.47\00:08:51.64 you are a person of influence in your family. For father's 00:08:51.67\00:08:56.00 especially I would appeal to you to be faithful to the Lord 00:08:56.04\00:09:00.34 because you carry a lot of influence. Perhaps you have 00:09:00.37\00:09:03.63 friends of yours that are leaders, and again, I would 00:09:03.66\00:09:06.85 speak to fathers. Fathers have an incredible influence in the 00:09:06.89\00:09:11.38 home and even statistically when a mother in a home becomes a 00:09:11.42\00:09:15.57 Christian there's a 17% chance that the rest of the household 00:09:15.61\00:09:19.33 will become Christian. When the father becomes a Christian, it's 00:09:19.37\00:09:23.78 over 90% chance. Sometimes we know people who are leaders in 00:09:23.82\00:09:27.95 their homes and we don't say things. We don't try to appeal 00:09:27.98\00:09:33.27 to them. Paul, he appealed to these people that he saw who 00:09:33.30\00:09:37.22 could be leaders in their homes and we see the results. 00:09:37.25\00:09:41.14 The whole household is converted 00:09:41.17\00:09:42.48 That's right and sometimes we shy away from believing 00:09:42.52\00:09:45.63 something because of opposition in our household, but we find 00:09:45.67\00:09:48.81 that when we're faithful and when we follow the Lord 00:09:48.84\00:09:50.97 regardless of what pressures we might have, it's the best thing 00:09:51.01\00:09:55.13 we can do for our household. And we see this wonderful 00:09:55.16\00:09:57.75 experience once again of the whole household being saved. 00:09:57.79\00:10:00.42 Now in verse 9 it says, Now and the Lord spoke to Paul in the 00:10:00.45\00:10:03.05 night by a vision. Do not be afraid but speak and do not 00:10:03.08\00:10:06.54 keep silent for I am with you and no one will attack you to 00:10:06.58\00:10:10.23 hurt you for I have many people in this city. Then in verse 11, 00:10:10.27\00:10:13.89 it says and he continued there, there in Corinth, a year and six 00:10:13.93\00:10:17.52 months teaching the word of God among them. This is 00:10:17.55\00:10:20.95 powerful. It's interesting. We read the book of Acts and 00:10:20.99\00:10:26.58 everything is happening in rapid succession but the book of Acts 00:10:26.62\00:10:29.83 covered a period of over 30 years and there was a lot of 00:10:29.86\00:10:34.05 work that we don't see that was going on in the book of Acts 00:10:34.09\00:10:37.21 by the different members in the churches, by the apostles 00:10:37.25\00:10:39.81 themselves. We see some of the highlights, some of the 00:10:39.84\00:10:42.33 supernatural things, certainly drew Luke's attention. But here 00:10:42.37\00:10:46.63 we see this pattern that the Apostle Paul builds of not just 00:10:46.66\00:10:50.91 going into an area, baptizing some people and running off to 00:10:50.95\00:10:55.18 the next area. He was there for a full year and six months. The 00:10:55.21\00:10:59.41 great commission was not go and baptize... 00:10:59.44\00:11:02.82 And he was teaching the word among them and he was with them 00:11:02.86\00:11:06.47 day in and day out and teaching and I'm sure modeling. 00:11:06.50\00:11:10.85 That's right. You know the great commission doesn't just say we 00:11:10.89\00:11:12.20 are to go and baptize, but we're to go and make disciples 00:11:12.23\00:11:15.55 baptizing them and then teaching them to observe all things that 00:11:15.59\00:11:19.57 the Lord has commanded us. So sometimes we think our work is 00:11:19.60\00:11:23.02 completed when we've studied with someone, we've baptized 00:11:23.05\00:11:26.95 them and then we move on to the next. Often times we'll have 00:11:26.99\00:11:31.16 evangelistic efforts and we'll stir up a lot of interest and 00:11:31.19\00:11:35.33 then after that's over that list of people who showed 00:11:35.36\00:11:38.24 interest in the Bible... That's usually about a month's 00:11:38.27\00:11:41.12 worth of time. That's right. It takes about a 00:11:41.15\00:11:43.12 month to get through that series. Then that list of people 00:11:43.16\00:11:46.42 that came sits on a desk somewhere or maybe we follow up 00:11:46.46\00:11:49.87 with a couple but we just stir up the area but we don't bind 00:11:49.91\00:11:53.63 it up and we don't lead to what we're really to be leading to 00:11:53.67\00:11:57.92 which is to making disciples. Disciples are self-denying. 00:11:57.96\00:12:02.55 Disciples are faithful to be fishers of men and if we're 00:12:02.58\00:12:07.10 going to really be developing the work of God, we're going to 00:12:07.14\00:12:11.14 have to start going beyond just baptizing people and start 00:12:11.17\00:12:16.13 training people to be workers. Paul stayed with this group 00:12:16.16\00:12:20.72 until they were whole-hearted in their own ministry in their 00:12:20.75\00:12:25.17 own area, ministering to others and that was the effectiveness 00:12:25.20\00:12:29.59 of the early church was their focus on that discipleship. 00:12:29.62\00:12:32.63 Absolutely. We'll see that a little bit more in the chapter 00:12:32.67\00:12:37.96 as we go on. In verse 12, it tells us that, of course he's 00:12:37.99\00:12:43.21 here for this period of time, it says, When Gallio was proconsul 00:12:43.25\00:12:46.46 of Achaia the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and 00:12:46.49\00:12:50.61 brought him to the judgment seat. So once again the Jews are 00:12:50.64\00:12:54.11 stirred up and they bring Paul to the judgment seat, Saying 00:12:54.14\00:12:57.51 this fellow persuades men to worship God contrary to the law 00:12:57.54\00:13:01.06 and when Paul was about to open his month Gallio said to the 00:13:01.10\00:13:04.88 Jews, If it were a matter of wrong doing or wicked crimes O 00:13:04.91\00:13:08.18 Jews there would be reason why I should bear with you. But if 00:13:08.21\00:13:11.23 it is a question of words and names and of your own law, look 00:13:11.26\00:13:14.19 to yourselves for I do not want to be a judge of such matters 00:13:14.22\00:13:17.35 and he drove them from the judgment seat. The Bible says in 00:13:17.38\00:13:20.65 verse 17, Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the ruler of 00:13:20.68\00:13:23.89 the synagogue and beat him before the judgment seat but 00:13:23.93\00:13:27.07 Gallio took no notice of these things. Now once again the Jews 00:13:27.11\00:13:30.57 who don't believe are trying to stir up trouble for the apostle 00:13:30.61\00:13:34.04 and it's interesting that in this place the Lord has a 00:13:34.07\00:13:36.75 different way of rescuing Paul from the situation and those 00:13:36.79\00:13:42.25 who are opposing him now God is able to impress Gallio and he 00:13:42.28\00:13:46.72 says I'm not even going to hear this matter. You guys see to it. 00:13:46.75\00:13:51.25 And for whatever reason those who are nearby begin to beat the 00:13:51.29\00:13:55.76 ruler of the synagogue and Gallio looks the other way. 00:13:55.79\00:13:59.14 Probably they knew that their charges against Paul were not 00:13:59.18\00:14:02.98 fair and he felt they deserved it but one way or another the 00:14:03.02\00:14:07.02 Lord delivers the apostle from this situation and he goes on to 00:14:07.06\00:14:11.05 minister. And we'll look at that but we're going to take a break 00:14:11.08\00:14:15.04 here and then we're going to come back to see what happens 00:14:15.07\00:14:17.63 next as Paul returns to Antioch.
