Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.58\00:00:02.85 Before our break, Mark, we were walking through this experience 00:00:02.89\00:00:07.71 of the Apostle Paul where he was ministering in Berea and as 00:00:07.75\00:00:12.38 we've seen in other places, there was a group that didn't 00:00:12.41\00:00:16.29 believe and stirred up the crowds and once again Paul was 00:00:16.33\00:00:21.15 kicked out of town. And so Paul was sent off to Athens and we 00:00:21.18\00:00:25.97 pick up in verse 16 of the story in Athens, which is an 00:00:26.01\00:00:29.57 incredible story. Let's begin there in verse 16 reading. 00:00:29.60\00:00:33.60 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens his spirit was 00:00:33.63\00:00:37.56 provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to 00:00:37.60\00:00:41.93 idols. Now just think about that for a moment. The Apostle Paul 00:00:41.96\00:00:46.65 was provoked, his spirit was provoked within him. Here he is, 00:00:46.68\00:00:51.18 he comes into this place where there's such little knowledge of 00:00:51.22\00:00:55.68 the true God and he looks on the crowds and his spirit is 00:00:55.72\00:00:59.87 provoked. You can sense the love for souls, the love for the 00:00:59.91\00:01:04.25 salvation of humanity that Paul had and it reminds me of Jesus. 00:01:04.29\00:01:08.37 I remember in the gospels it speaks about how Jesus when he 00:01:08.41\00:01:13.54 looked upon the multitudes that he was moved with compassion. 00:01:13.58\00:01:17.51 And it says that he saw that they were like sheep without a 00:01:17.55\00:01:22.74 shepherd. So here we have this group of people who should have 00:01:22.77\00:01:27.49 been given the knowledge of salvation by now if God's people 00:01:27.52\00:01:32.00 had done their work, but instead they're in this ignorance of 00:01:32.03\00:01:36.47 their salvation. They're not just idolatrous. 00:01:36.51\00:01:37.98 They're given over to idolatry. They are steeped so deeply where 00:01:38.01\00:01:41.92 Paul probably wonders, how am I going to preach to these people. 00:01:41.95\00:01:45.82 They're entrenched. So then in verse 17 it says, Therefore, 00:01:45.86\00:01:50.23 therefore because of his deep love and his spirit being 00:01:50.26\00:01:54.57 provoked he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with 00:01:54.60\00:01:58.62 the Gentile worshipers and in the market place daily with 00:01:58.66\00:02:02.09 those who happened to be there. That sounds like everybody 00:02:02.13\00:02:05.94 doesn't it. So there were the Jews, the Gentiles who were 00:02:05.98\00:02:09.57 going to the synagogue and who were worshippers and then 00:02:09.61\00:02:13.16 anybody really who breathed. 00:02:13.20\00:02:15.13 This wasn't a meeting in the market place. This was those who 00:02:15.17\00:02:19.09 happened to be there. There wasn't scheduled anything. 00:02:19.13\00:02:20.80 So you get this sense that the Apostle Paul was involved in 00:02:20.84\00:02:24.76 what we might call lifestyle evangelism. He wasn't just 00:02:24.79\00:02:29.17 somebody who only was on the clock during certain hours and 00:02:29.20\00:02:32.88 off the clock in others. Wherever he was he was preaching 00:02:32.91\00:02:36.52 the Lord Jesus and there he was in the market place and whoever 00:02:36.55\00:02:39.31 happened to be there he was sharing the word. So you get the 00:02:39.35\00:02:42.27 sense too that there's these worshipers, they're the ones 00:02:42.30\00:02:45.52 who have an understanding of God. They don't have a full 00:02:45.55\00:02:48.75 understanding of God and he needs to definitely communicate 00:02:48.78\00:02:51.95 to them and try to reach them, especially the Gentile 00:02:51.98\00:02:54.45 worshipers who have less of an understanding than the Jewish 00:02:54.49\00:02:57.30 ones. But then there's also this class that we might call 00:02:57.34\00:03:00.09 unchurched today. They've got no understanding and he meets with 00:03:00.12\00:03:04.26 them in the market place. He's spreading his message to 00:03:04.30\00:03:06.96 everyone. Then it says in verse 18, Then certain epicurean and 00:03:07.00\00:03:11.71 stoic philosophers encountered him and some said what does this 00:03:11.74\00:03:16.13 babbler want to say. Other's said he seems to be a proclaimer 00:03:16.17\00:03:20.09 of foreign gods because he preached to them Jesus and the 00:03:20.12\00:03:23.96 resurrection. This is where it gets interesting. Verse 19. Then 00:03:23.99\00:03:29.02 they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, may we 00:03:29.06\00:03:33.42 know what this new doctrine is of which you speak. For you are 00:03:33.46\00:03:37.43 bringing some strange thing to our ears. You would think that 00:03:37.46\00:03:41.06 would be a negative thing. You bring some strange thing. But 00:03:41.10\00:03:44.26 then it says, Therefore, we want to know what these things mean. 00:03:44.30\00:03:47.43 Just the fact that it was strange didn't deter them and we 00:03:47.47\00:03:51.35 find out why. It says in verse 21, For all the Athenians and 00:03:51.39\00:03:55.42 the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else 00:03:55.46\00:04:00.09 but to either tell or to hear some new thing. So the fact that 00:04:00.12\00:04:03.82 he was sharing some strange thing, that didn't upset them or 00:04:03.86\00:04:07.12 make them not want to hear. In fact, it made them want to hear. 00:04:07.16\00:04:10.64 And there they were sitting there doing what they always do, 00:04:10.68\00:04:14.67 wanting to hear some new thing. It fascinates me that... 00:04:14.71\00:04:18.67 I've known Christians like that. 00:04:18.70\00:04:20.22 Yeah. This is not altogether gone. This is certainly talking 00:04:20.26\00:04:24.55 about Athens but this idea of some new thing, you know. 00:04:24.58\00:04:27.66 Sensational ideas. So many come to an understanding of the truth 00:04:27.69\00:04:33.38 and they're growing in it but for whatever reason they begin 00:04:33.41\00:04:37.81 to get bored with it and they move on and they start coming up 00:04:37.85\00:04:42.21 with sensational, fanatical views and they move from one 00:04:42.25\00:04:45.48 view to another. Certainly that happened in this day with the 00:04:45.51\00:04:49.71 philosophies of the day here in Athens. But I can't help but 00:04:49.74\00:04:54.20 think also that it's possible that even the study of the Bible 00:04:54.24\00:04:59.25 and theology can lead someone down a wrong path if all they 00:04:59.29\00:05:03.67 do is spend their time researching and trying to study 00:05:03.70\00:05:08.01 some new thing. The study of the Bible should never be disparaged 00:05:08.05\00:05:12.52 but let's look at the Apostle Paul as an example. He was 00:05:12.56\00:05:16.59 someone, he spent time studying, he wrote letters that are full 00:05:16.63\00:05:21.06 of theology but when you look at his life he spent it focusing on 00:05:21.09\00:05:25.38 the purpose of that theology and the focus of that theology which 00:05:25.41\00:05:29.53 was the salvation of humanity through Jesus Christ. So he was 00:05:29.57\00:05:34.28 focused on the mission and the cause of God and that focus 00:05:34.32\00:05:38.85 helped him to understand the true meaning of the theology 00:05:38.88\00:05:43.38 in the scriptures that he was a student of. 00:05:43.42\00:05:45.93 That's right. There's a practical side of theology that 00:05:45.97\00:05:48.95 helps us to better understand the theology. I can't help but 00:05:48.98\00:05:52.06 think, and I'm sure our viewers will relate to this, at least 00:05:52.09\00:05:55.13 some of them, especially the fathers who have had to put 00:05:55.17\00:05:58.67 together toys for their children and you get that page of 00:05:58.70\00:06:02.00 instructions and you say to yourself when you're halfway 00:06:02.03\00:06:05.25 through it, I wish the guys who put these things together, these 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.85 instructions together, had to put one of these toys together 00:06:08.88\00:06:12.37 with their own instructions just once. You know there's a theory, 00:06:12.41\00:06:18.62 but the practical side of things really tempers the theory 00:06:18.65\00:06:22.61 sometimes. As you're mentioning in theology if all we're doing 00:06:22.64\00:06:26.56 is entertaining ideologies, grand themes of Christianity, 00:06:26.59\00:06:31.61 sometimes they will lose any practical significance for the 00:06:31.64\00:06:36.62 common people. And they actually become a 00:06:36.66\00:06:38.03 little bit distorted and you can't really truly understand 00:06:38.07\00:06:42.16 them until they're put into practical application and then 00:06:42.19\00:06:46.25 their full understanding comes to light. 00:06:46.28\00:06:47.80 That's right. Well it's interesting as we go on here 00:06:47.84\00:06:51.79 then. Paul is meeting here in Athens, meeting in the market 00:06:51.82\00:06:56.14 place and what have you and he's got an appointment with these 00:06:56.17\00:07:00.46 epicurean philosophers and others to share with them. 00:07:00.49\00:07:04.29 We're going to verse 22. The Bible says, Then Paul stood in 00:07:04.32\00:07:08.55 the middle of the Areopagus. Now this was a place in Athens 00:07:08.58\00:07:13.37 that was the place for sharing what they understood to be 00:07:13.41\00:07:16.94 knowledge and truth and here Paul has this opportunity to 00:07:16.97\00:07:20.09 share with these men of Athens. And he says, Men of Athens, I 00:07:20.13\00:07:24.02 perceive that in all things you are very religious. For as I was 00:07:24.05\00:07:27.59 passing through and considering the objects of your worship I 00:07:27.62\00:07:31.52 even found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. 00:07:31.56\00:07:35.42 Therefore, the one whom you worship without knowing him I 00:07:35.46\00:07:39.72 proclaim to you. Now this is a really crafty idea by the 00:07:39.76\00:07:44.09 apostle. He's looking for an opportunity and he just happens 00:07:44.13\00:07:48.44 upon this monument or altar that says to the unknown god. He 00:07:48.48\00:07:53.05 already sees that the gods that they are worshipping in 00:07:53.09\00:07:57.59 character are totally different from the true God. So he takes 00:07:57.63\00:08:01.88 this opportunity to introduce them to the unknown God and he 00:08:01.91\00:08:06.13 says to them in verse 24, God who made the world and 00:08:06.16\00:08:10.38 everything in it since he is Lord of heaven and earth does 00:08:10.41\00:08:14.43 not dwell in temples made with hands nor is he worshipped with 00:08:14.46\00:08:18.25 with men's hands as though he needed anything since he gives 00:08:18.29\00:08:22.33 to all life, breath and all things. Now what's interesting 00:08:22.37\00:08:26.38 here, Jim, is the mindset of their religion, of pagan 00:08:26.41\00:08:30.20 religion and in reality, truth be told, all false religion, is 00:08:30.23\00:08:34.66 that man has to do something to come into good favor with God. 00:08:34.69\00:08:39.27 God needs something from us in order to act. And Paul makes the 00:08:39.30\00:08:43.84 point here that God made everything. He doesn't need 00:08:43.88\00:08:46.37 anything from us. He is the originator of everything and the 00:08:46.40\00:08:49.98 giver of every good gift. God who made all things is not 00:08:50.01\00:08:53.79 worshipped with men's hands. That was totally different from 00:08:53.82\00:08:57.93 the gods they knew. It truly was an unknown god. So he goes on 00:08:57.96\00:09:02.43 to say, God is not needing from us, he's the one who gives life 00:09:02.46\00:09:07.41 and breath and all things. Verse 26, And he has made from one 00:09:07.45\00:09:12.27 blood, speaking about going back to the origins now of Adam, from 00:09:12.31\00:09:16.42 one man every nation of men to dwell on the face of the earth 00:09:16.45\00:09:20.53 and has determined their preappointed times and the 00:09:20.57\00:09:23.37 boundaries of their dwellings. That would be the time periods 00:09:23.40\00:09:26.64 that men live in and the geographic locations they live 00:09:26.68\00:09:31.93 in. God has a plan for every one of us and he puts us in a place 00:09:31.97\00:09:37.05 and a time where we can make a difference. Not only where we 00:09:37.08\00:09:41.25 can make a difference but where he can reach us and we see this 00:09:41.28\00:09:46.35 in the next part. He determined the place where they were going 00:09:46.38\00:09:51.41 to be, determined their preappointed times and the 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.93 boundaries of their dwelling. Verse 27, So that they should 00:09:53.96\00:09:58.50 seek the Lord in the hope that they may find him though he is 00:09:58.53\00:10:02.71 not... that they may grope for him and find him though he is 00:10:02.74\00:10:06.30 not far from any one of us. It's interesting language there. 00:10:06.33\00:10:10.76 To grope for something is as if you're blind, in darkness, and 00:10:10.79\00:10:14.28 you're groping for something that's hard to find, but then 00:10:14.31\00:10:17.73 he makes the point, he's not far from us. He's not hard to find. 00:10:17.77\00:10:21.83 The reason that we don't find him sometimes is because of the 00:10:21.87\00:10:24.96 way that we're searching or not searching for him. Maybe we're 00:10:25.00\00:10:27.96 looking for a different kind of god. So he presents this God 00:10:28.00\00:10:31.01 to them, the unknown god, For in him we live and move and have 00:10:31.05\00:10:33.92 our being as also some of your own poets have said for we are 00:10:33.96\00:10:37.23 also his offspring. Therefore since we are the offspring of 00:10:37.27\00:10:41.28 God we ought not to think of the divine nature like gold or 00:10:41.31\00:10:44.79 silver or stone, like these men's idols and what have you. 00:10:44.82\00:10:48.51 Then he says in verse 30, Truly these times of ignorance God 00:10:48.55\00:10:52.95 overlooked but now commands all men everywhere to repent because 00:10:52.98\00:10:57.35 he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in 00:10:57.38\00:11:00.44 righteousness by the man whom he has ordained, etc. So he says 00:11:00.48\00:11:03.51 you may have been in ignorance but God has given you the 00:11:03.54\00:11:08.40 opportunity and in the times of our ignorance God overlooks it 00:11:08.43\00:11:11.22 but we are in ignorance no more. I'm presenting something to you 00:11:11.25\00:11:14.82 he says and now you need to make a decision for the real true God 00:11:14.85\00:11:18.38 That's right. Amen. You know you look at verse 32 to see the 00:11:18.42\00:11:23.69 response and you find out... I think that somehow Paul was 00:11:23.72\00:11:28.74 I don't want to say cut off, but he was no longer going to be 00:11:28.78\00:11:33.18 heard by most of those who were listening because in verse 32 it 00:11:33.22\00:11:37.58 says, And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead some 00:11:37.62\00:11:41.94 mocked while others said, We will hear you again on this 00:11:41.98\00:11:45.34 matter. So some mocked, which certainly... They didn't believe 00:11:45.37\00:11:50.42 they were Greeks. Remember that the Apostle Paul says that 00:11:50.45\00:11:54.68 Christ crucified is to the Greeks foolishness. So the whole 00:11:54.72\00:11:58.34 idea of these supernatural experiences of the resurrection 00:11:58.38\00:12:01.94 were also foolishness. So they weren't going to hear that, they 00:12:01.97\00:12:04.72 were mocking. Others, because they were interested in any new 00:12:04.76\00:12:07.28 thing, said hey we'll hear you again, but we don't have record 00:12:07.31\00:12:09.80 of that happening. But then in verse 33 it says, So Paul 00:12:09.83\00:12:14.64 departed from among them, however, some men joined him and 00:12:14.68\00:12:20.11 believe, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named 00:12:20.14\00:12:24.72 Demaris and others with them. So you get this idea that there 00:12:24.75\00:12:28.94 some that responded. But I want you to notice what happened 00:12:28.98\00:12:32.67 in previous places like in Thessalonica. Go back to chapter 00:12:32.71\00:12:37.63 17, verse 4, in Thessalonica and it says, A great multitude of 00:12:37.67\00:12:43.35 the devout Greeks responded. In chapter 17 verse 12 it says, 00:12:43.39\00:12:49.00 Therefore, many of them believed in Berea but here in Athens just 00:12:49.04\00:12:54.29 some men joined him. You don't get the sense that this crafty 00:12:54.32\00:12:59.11 argument worked all that well in Athens. The Apostle Paul is 00:12:59.14\00:13:03.38 about to go to Corinth and he makes a decision at the end of 00:13:03.41\00:13:07.66 his ministry in Athens that has a deep effect on his ministry in 00:13:07.69\00:13:11.88 Corinth and we find that in the book of I Corinthians chapter 2. 00:13:11.91\00:13:16.06 He says in verse 1, And I, brethren, when I came to you did 00:13:16.10\00:13:19.66 not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to 00:13:19.69\00:13:23.76 you the testimony of God for I determined, I decided, not to 00:13:23.79\00:13:27.52 know anything among you, the Corinthians, except Jesus Christ 00:13:27.55\00:13:31.24 and him crucified. So here in Athens he used logic and 00:13:31.28\00:13:35.69 argumentation, but he discovered that that wasn't as effective 00:13:35.73\00:13:39.40 as simply speaking and appealing to the heart about Jesus Christ 00:13:39.44\00:13:43.13 and him crucified. How about you viewer? Are you ready to accept 00:13:43.16\00:13:46.81 Jesus Christ and him crucified. We hope you'll join us next time 00:13:46.85\00:13:50.46 as we dive in further on Books of the Book. 00:13:50.50\00:13:52.76
