Welcome to Books of the Book. I hope you have been joining us 00:00:22.82\00:00:25.83 in our study of the book of Acts here as we've been studying 00:00:25.86\00:00:28.57 along. My name is Pastor Mark Howard and I'm here with my 00:00:28.60\00:00:31.24 co-host, my brother, Jim Howard, who is also a pastor by the way. 00:00:31.28\00:00:35.60 We have been going through the book of Acts. In our last time 00:00:35.64\00:00:40.23 together we were studying the book of Acts chapter 16 and the 00:00:40.26\00:00:45.39 Macedonian call and how the Holy Spirit had actually said no. 00:00:45.42\00:00:49.54 I think that was the title that we used in When the Holy Spirit 00:00:49.58\00:00:53.73 Says No. Because the Holy Spirit said no to Paul when he wanted 00:00:53.77\00:00:57.89 to go in certain other places and we found out why because 00:00:57.92\00:01:01.96 there was a need in Macedonia. When Paul took the call to 00:01:02.00\00:01:05.83 Macedonia, he and his team, the Lord really blessed them by 00:01:05.86\00:01:09.96 establishing a Christian church at Philippi. So we're coming 00:01:09.99\00:01:14.01 through that into Acts. In fact, we're going to start in verse 40 00:01:14.05\00:01:18.06 of chapter 16 and we're going to carry right through to chapter 00:01:18.09\00:01:21.44 17. But before we do we're going to ask God to bless our time in 00:01:21.47\00:01:24.78 his word. So I'd invite you to bow your heads with me. 00:01:24.81\00:01:28.18 Father in heaven, we thank you for the privilege we have of 00:01:28.21\00:01:31.50 studying your word. We thank you for the Spirit of Truth that you 00:01:31.54\00:01:35.12 have given us to lead us into all truth and, Lord, to bring 00:01:35.15\00:01:38.51 conviction and to bring power into our lives to follow through 00:01:38.54\00:01:42.73 in our Christian endeavors. Now we ask, Lord, as we study that 00:01:42.77\00:01:46.77 you would continue to guide us today. In Jesus' name we pray. 00:01:46.80\00:01:50.77 Amen. Now in Acts, as I said, 16 and 00:01:50.80\00:01:54.66 verse 40, we're finishing up with the previous chapter. 00:01:54.69\00:01:58.33 It says, They went out of the prison and entered the house of 00:01:58.37\00:02:01.57 Lydia, who was this convert there. Her whole household 00:02:01.60\00:02:04.97 in Philippi, and when they had seen the brethren, they 00:02:05.00\00:02:08.60 encouraged them and they departed. Now they came on to 00:02:08.64\00:02:12.17 Thessalonica. We find in chapter 17, They passed through, verse 1 00:02:12.20\00:02:17.40 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they 00:02:17.44\00:02:22.60 came to Thessalonica where there was a synagogue of the 00:02:22.64\00:02:26.42 Jews. Then Paul, as his custom was, went into them and for 00:02:26.46\00:02:29.67 three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the scriptures 00:02:29.71\00:02:32.86 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer 00:02:32.89\00:02:36.46 and rise again from the dead and saying this Jesus whom I preach 00:02:36.50\00:02:41.19 to you is the Christ. And some of them were persuaded and a 00:02:41.23\00:02:44.82 great multitude of the devout Greeks and not a few of the 00:02:44.85\00:02:48.60 leading women joined Paul and Silas. Now there are a few 00:02:48.64\00:02:52.55 things, Jim, here that really are important to us. First of 00:02:52.59\00:02:56.31 all, we've touched on this before, Paul, as his custom was, 00:02:56.34\00:03:00.71 went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and reasoned with 00:03:00.74\00:03:04.55 them out of the scriptures. The first thing that grabs my 00:03:04.59\00:03:08.85 attention again is that we find that it was Paul's custom to 00:03:08.89\00:03:12.35 worship on the Sabbath, whether in the synagogue, whether by the 00:03:12.38\00:03:15.81 riverside, this was a custom that he followed. Secondly, it 00:03:15.85\00:03:20.96 was a custom of his to reason out of the scriptures about 00:03:21.00\00:03:26.32 Christ. This may come as a surprise to some of our viewers 00:03:26.36\00:03:31.61 who maybe haven't given thought to this yet, but there are many 00:03:31.65\00:03:35.84 people who look at Christ and the gospel as a New Testament 00:03:35.87\00:03:39.88 thing and don't realize that the only scripture the apostle had 00:03:39.91\00:03:43.58 here was the Old Testament. It was not the New Testament that 00:03:43.61\00:03:46.86 he was preaching Christ from. But it was the Old Testament 00:03:46.90\00:03:50.53 scriptures that he customarily, on a regular basis, preached 00:03:50.57\00:03:54.51 Christ from. We need to remember and realize and recognize that 00:03:54.54\00:03:58.70 the Old Testament scriptures are full of gospel imagery. But we 00:03:58.74\00:04:02.73 need to have the Holy Spirit open our understanding so that 00:04:02.76\00:04:06.72 we can see that gospel imagery. 00:04:06.75\00:04:08.36 And we know that Jesus opened the understanding of the early 00:04:08.40\00:04:12.37 apostles and that was a big part of... Of course, Paul was 00:04:12.41\00:04:16.53 trained and he understood those Old Testament scriptures, but 00:04:16.56\00:04:20.12 when he connected with the early church there was also the 00:04:20.15\00:04:23.59 blessing of getting all that benefit from when Jesus, in Luke 00:04:23.63\00:04:27.03 24, opened to their understanding all the things 00:04:27.07\00:04:29.34 about him in Law and in the prophets and in the Psalms. 00:04:29.37\00:04:32.42 That's right. We would do well to continue to study the 00:04:32.45\00:04:35.46 scripture, Old and New Testaments, and continually ask 00:04:35.49\00:04:39.10 God for new revelations of Christ in the word. Now it's 00:04:39.14\00:04:42.43 interesting. Again in verse 4 it says, Some of them were 00:04:42.46\00:04:45.72 persuaded, that is in the synagogue, but the great 00:04:45.76\00:04:48.52 multitude of devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women 00:04:48.56\00:04:52.52 joined Paul and Silas. So we see that he preaches Christ from the 00:04:52.55\00:04:56.47 word and the church grows. 00:04:56.51\00:04:58.18 That's right. Now if you look at verse 5 it picks up with a 00:04:58.22\00:05:02.68 common theme that we've seen before. It says, But the Jews, 00:05:02.72\00:05:07.25 but the Jews, who were not persuaded, in another place it 00:05:07.29\00:05:11.79 says the unbelieving Jews, becoming envious... 00:05:11.82\00:05:15.20 So it's important for us to note again for our viewers a lot of 00:05:15.23\00:05:18.40 times the New Testament uses this language about the Jews and 00:05:18.43\00:05:21.70 their anger. But we know that it wasn't all the Jews. Paul was a 00:05:21.73\00:05:24.49 Jew, many of his colleagues were Jews and many of the Jews did 00:05:24.52\00:05:28.59 believe. Of course, Jesus is a Jew in his humanity. So it's not 00:05:28.62\00:05:33.48 (we're not disparaging the Jews) but it's commenting here that 00:05:33.52\00:05:37.91 because of their preconceived ideas as a people, as a nation, 00:05:37.95\00:05:42.31 we find them fighting against the gospel of Christ. 00:05:42.35\00:05:45.84 That's right. And not accepting him as their Messiah. So these 00:05:45.87\00:05:49.57 Jews were ones who were not persuaded that Jesus was the 00:05:49.61\00:05:52.55 Messiah. And it says, Becoming envious, took some of the evil 00:05:52.58\00:05:57.09 men from the market place and gathering a mob set all the city 00:05:57.13\00:06:00.84 in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason and sought to 00:06:00.88\00:06:04.67 bring them out to the people. Now I'm going to stop there for 00:06:04.71\00:06:08.38 just a moment. Fascinating, a couple of things. First of all 00:06:08.42\00:06:11.60 it says, Took some of the evil men from the market place. 00:06:11.63\00:06:15.09 Well I suppose that that's from the perspective of Luke, the 00:06:15.13\00:06:18.55 divinely inspired author. If they were to say they would 00:06:18.59\00:06:21.57 probably say they were well- esteemed men. But these were 00:06:21.60\00:06:25.05 evil men if the truth be known and we also see into the heart 00:06:25.08\00:06:28.52 of these Jews who were not persuaded where he reveals once 00:06:28.56\00:06:31.92 again, we've seen this before as well, that they were envious. 00:06:31.96\00:06:34.93 That was really at the heart of what they were doing. They 00:06:34.96\00:06:39.18 were seeing these people listening and giving heed and 00:06:39.21\00:06:43.35 accepting the words of Paul and his team. So we see that there 00:06:43.39\00:06:48.63 was a sense of reputation that was in the way here for these 00:06:48.66\00:06:53.86 Jews who didn't believe. They were upset about what was 00:06:53.90\00:06:56.67 happening. But you'll notice that that's not how they 00:06:56.71\00:06:59.95 portray it as we continue. But I want to point out too... 00:06:59.99\00:07:02.63 Yeah, we don't find them saying hey we're mad because he's 00:07:02.67\00:07:05.28 getting more attention than we are. 00:07:05.31\00:07:06.53 They're not going to say that. We'll find out what they say. 00:07:06.56\00:07:10.39 But it's notable too that they again gather these evil men from 00:07:10.42\00:07:14.78 the market place to create this uproar. I mean, envy will lead 00:07:14.81\00:07:19.13 you to do a lot of awful things. And they may have been 00:07:19.17\00:07:22.02 justifying themselves, rationalizing that it wasn't 00:07:22.05\00:07:24.83 envy, but at the end of the day they were joining forces with 00:07:24.86\00:07:28.78 people that they knew very well were not in harmony with the 00:07:28.81\00:07:32.07 will of God as expressed to them and as they knew it from the 00:07:32.10\00:07:35.52 oracles of God. Anyway, in verse 6 it says, But when they did not 00:07:35.56\00:07:38.76 find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers 00:07:38.80\00:07:41.97 of the city crying out, These who have turned the world 00:07:42.00\00:07:45.94 upside down have come here too. Jason has harbored them and 00:07:45.98\00:07:49.69 these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar saying 00:07:49.72\00:07:53.73 there is another king, Jesus, and it troubled the crowd and 00:07:53.77\00:07:57.71 the rulers of the city when they heard these things. So when they 00:07:57.74\00:08:00.57 had taken security from Jason and the rest they let them go. 00:08:00.61\00:08:04.48 So here's the picture. They say these men who have turned the 00:08:04.51\00:08:08.35 world upside down. Can you think of a better compliment 00:08:08.39\00:08:12.12 than that they turned the world upside down. Praise the Lord. 00:08:12.15\00:08:15.96 That shows the effectiveness that was happening and the way 00:08:16.00\00:08:19.14 the word was spreading from city to city even in these 00:08:19.18\00:08:22.25 Gentile cities. And then it says they are acting contrary to the 00:08:22.29\00:08:27.08 decrees of Caesar. Now comes out their facade. That's right. 00:08:27.12\00:08:31.06 Their concern for Caesar and the fact that there was not enough 00:08:31.10\00:08:35.23 respect. Nothing about envy. Only their lack of respect for 00:08:35.26\00:08:38.51 Caesar was their reason, but the Bible reveals that it was 00:08:38.54\00:08:42.60 actually envy. So then they can't really do much more so 00:08:42.63\00:08:46.65 take... That's not the first time we've 00:08:46.69\00:08:48.18 heard about concern for Caesar. 00:08:48.21\00:08:49.46 That's right. You go back to the trial of Jesus and they said we 00:08:49.50\00:08:54.83 have no king but Caesar and certainly made it appear that 00:08:54.87\00:09:00.18 Jesus was an enemy of Caesar. 00:09:00.21\00:09:01.69 Yeah. Pilate, if you go through with this you're not Caesar's 00:09:01.72\00:09:03.68 friend. Exactly. So we recognize that 00:09:03.72\00:09:07.19 when really someone who's driven by envy and greed wants to 00:09:07.22\00:09:12.74 accomplish something they will often times resort to things 00:09:12.77\00:09:18.41 that lower their dignity and their honesty and maybe they 00:09:18.44\00:09:24.01 rationalized that what they were doing was really true but the 00:09:24.04\00:09:27.41 truth is there was envy lurking in the heart and that can 00:09:27.45\00:09:29.84 produce some pretty wicked things and that's what we see 00:09:29.87\00:09:32.23 here. Well we go on in verse 10 to 00:09:32.26\00:09:34.58 find out of course they found Jason but they couldn't find 00:09:34.62\00:09:36.76 the apostles. Verse 10 says, The brethren immediately sent Paul 00:09:36.79\00:09:40.19 and Silas away by night to Berea so they're trying to whisk them 00:09:40.22\00:09:43.53 away and protect them. When they arrived they went into the 00:09:43.56\00:09:46.59 synagogue of the Jews. Now in verse 11 there's something 00:09:46.62\00:09:49.48 interesting. These were more fair-minded than those of 00:09:49.52\00:09:52.72 Thessalonica in that they received the word with all 00:09:52.76\00:09:56.42 readiness and searched the scriptures daily to find out 00:09:56.46\00:10:00.05 whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed 00:10:00.09\00:10:04.24 and also not a few of the Greeks prominent women as well as men. 00:10:04.28\00:10:08.02 Now a couple of things here that are important. First of all, 00:10:08.05\00:10:11.75 it says that they were more fair-minded in that they 00:10:11.79\00:10:16.01 received the word and searched the scriptures. These were the 00:10:16.04\00:10:19.37 people of Berea and even today in Christianity, in fact I think 00:10:19.40\00:10:22.70 there's a whole chain of Christian book stores called 00:10:22.73\00:10:24.53 Berean book stores. There's a publisher called Berean Books. 00:10:24.57\00:10:27.82 Berean is a word that's used in Christianity today as people 00:10:27.85\00:10:31.78 who study. They don't just take what they hear. They were good 00:10:31.81\00:10:35.70 Bereans, they searched the scriptures. But what's 00:10:35.74\00:10:38.97 interesting to me is this, Jim. I've run into a number of people 00:10:39.00\00:10:42.43 that think they're good Bereans because they're skeptics. When 00:10:42.47\00:10:45.86 you try to share something ah it's like well I don't know 00:10:45.90\00:10:48.52 about that and they question and they're skeptical about 00:10:48.55\00:10:52.14 everything. That's not how these people were because they 00:10:52.17\00:10:55.69 received the word with readiness of mind. In other words, they 00:10:55.73\00:10:59.81 were open to it. They weren't hesitant and skeptical. Now they 00:10:59.84\00:11:03.71 were still going to go and search the scriptures to confirm 00:11:03.74\00:11:07.36 it, but they had an openness about them. Sometimes I've 00:11:07.40\00:11:12.20 seen people who cover their skepticism in this air of I'm 00:11:12.24\00:11:16.63 just going to study it out and be faithful to God but often 00:11:16.66\00:11:20.39 times it's not an attempt or desire to be faithful to God but 00:11:20.43\00:11:23.40 to hold onto their own views and so they're going to be skeptical 00:11:23.43\00:11:26.37 of anything that they don't think. 00:11:26.40\00:11:27.79 That's not being a good Berean. 00:11:27.82\00:11:29.13 That's not being a good Berean. That is not what we're finding 00:11:29.17\00:11:31.33 here. Because they were fair- minded and open-minded and 00:11:31.36\00:11:34.56 received the word with readiness. They still searched 00:11:34.59\00:11:37.72 searched the scriptures to find out whether these things were 00:11:37.76\00:11:39.77 so. I get the sense when they say 00:11:39.80\00:11:41.97 readiness that it's like giving somebody the benefit of the 00:11:42.01\00:11:45.98 benefit of the doubt. Instead of starting from the premise that 00:11:46.02\00:11:50.35 I'm going to critically examine this and point out what's wrong 00:11:50.38\00:11:54.01 you give someone the benefit of the doubt and listen with an 00:11:54.04\00:11:57.63 open mind and then after receiving then you can go back 00:11:57.67\00:12:01.42 and confirm or deny. But I agree with you. There are many people 00:12:01.46\00:12:05.64 who take that approach where they have a critical view of 00:12:05.67\00:12:07.69 things and then pride themselves in that because they don't take 00:12:07.73\00:12:11.53 any man's say so and they only take the word but the reality is 00:12:11.56\00:12:15.33 that they're not really being like the Bereans. 00:12:15.37\00:12:16.96 No they're not taking the word. So it's interesting that you 00:12:16.99\00:12:20.61 bring that up about being, how did you say that? Giving the 00:12:20.64\00:12:23.90 benefit of the doubt. Because where mine says in the New King 00:12:23.94\00:12:27.01 James, these were more fair- minded, my marginal reading, 00:12:27.04\00:12:29.91 and some translations word it this way, They were more noble. 00:12:29.95\00:12:32.75 You think of that, being noble, being fair to people and that's 00:12:32.79\00:12:35.93 where the fair-minded... giving people the benefit of the doubt. 00:12:35.96\00:12:39.07 So we go on here, There were many who believe but, verse 13 00:12:39.10\00:12:43.59 gives us a picture we've seen before, But when the Jews from 00:12:43.62\00:12:47.36 Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul 00:12:47.40\00:12:51.11 at Berea, they came there also and refuted him from the 00:12:51.14\00:12:54.57 scriptures. Nope, never. They stirred up the crowd. You know, 00:12:54.61\00:12:58.20 they never go to scripture. They stirred up the crowds and then 00:12:58.23\00:13:01.58 immediately the brethren sent Paul away to go to the sea, but 00:13:01.62\00:13:04.96 both Silas and Timothy remained there. So those who conducted 00:13:05.00\00:13:08.50 Paul brought him to Athens and received a command for Silas and 00:13:08.53\00:13:11.83 Timothy to come to him with all speed, and they departed. So he 00:13:11.87\00:13:14.97 moves on again to another place. Why? Because they stirred up the 00:13:15.01\00:13:18.08 crowds against him. So we're going to move on to Athens but 00:13:18.12\00:13:21.39 first we need to take a break. So we're going to break and I 00:13:21.42\00:13:24.34 hope you stick with us and come back in just a few moments as 00:13:24.38\00:13:27.02 we see Paul as he goes on to Athens and what mighty things 00:13:27.06\00:13:29.67 God does there. 00:13:29.70\00:13:30.73
