Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.08\00:00:02.91 We are in Acts chapter 16 and we are looking at the Macedonian 00:00:02.95\00:00:07.69 call that has just come to Paul and his team and now they've 00:00:07.72\00:00:11.70 responded to the call and they are heading to the area of 00:00:11.73\00:00:15.58 Macedonia. We're picking up in verse 11 of Acts 16. The Bible 00:00:15.61\00:00:19.25 says, Therefore sailing from Troas we ran a straight course 00:00:19.28\00:00:23.80 to Samothrace and the next day came to Neapolis and from there 00:00:23.83\00:00:28.32 to Philippi which is the foremost city of that part of 00:00:28.35\00:00:31.87 Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some 00:00:31.91\00:00:35.46 days and on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the 00:00:35.50\00:00:39.07 riverside where prayer was customarily made. And we sat 00:00:39.11\00:00:42.61 down and spoke to the women who met there. Now a certain woman 00:00:42.65\00:00:46.12 named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city 00:00:46.15\00:00:50.00 of Thyatira who worshiped God. God opened her heart to heed 00:00:50.04\00:00:53.80 the things spoken by Paul and when she and her household were 00:00:53.83\00:00:57.74 baptized she begged us saying, if you have judged me to be 00:00:57.78\00:01:01.62 faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay and so she 00:01:01.66\00:01:06.50 persuaded us. Now this is the first real convert that we find 00:01:06.54\00:01:11.35 here or the experience we find in this area of Philippi. 00:01:11.38\00:01:14.34 So already heeding the Macedonian call brings fruit 00:01:14.37\00:01:18.09 for the New Testament church. Now there are a couple of things 00:01:18.13\00:01:21.67 here that are interesting for us to note. First of all it says 00:01:21.71\00:01:25.22 that on the Sabbath day they went out by the riverside. 00:01:25.25\00:01:29.67 It's important for us to note that we see this consistently 00:01:29.71\00:01:33.84 in the New Testament church that the practice of the apostles, 00:01:33.87\00:01:37.85 including the Apostle Paul here, is to worship on the Sabbath 00:01:37.88\00:01:41.49 day. Now sometimes people say well Paul worshipped on the 00:01:41.53\00:01:44.56 Sabbath in the New Testament because that's when the Jews 00:01:44.60\00:01:47.56 worshipped. That's the time the synagogues were open. Well first 00:01:47.60\00:01:50.01 of all, we find throughout the book of Acts that the synagogues 00:01:50.04\00:01:52.42 were open every day. And furthermore, we find here that 00:01:52.45\00:01:56.53 there isn't a synagogue and so what do Paul and his team do? 00:01:56.57\00:02:00.98 They go down by the riverside where prayer was customarily 00:02:01.01\00:02:04.53 made. In other words, it's not a one-time thing. It's a custom 00:02:04.57\00:02:08.06 on the Sabbath day. It was Paul's practice, his custom, to 00:02:08.09\00:02:13.70 worship on the Sabbath day and I don't know if we had talked 00:02:13.73\00:02:19.31 about the idea of going to prayer. 00:02:19.34\00:02:22.98 Yeah, in verse 16 it speaks of that. 00:02:23.02\00:02:26.59 Okay. So you'll touch on that in a moment. One other thing here 00:02:26.63\00:02:30.49 about this woman Lydia now. They went down. They met with the 00:02:30.53\00:02:34.29 people there. There was a woman named Lydia. A couple of things 00:02:34.32\00:02:38.13 about Lydia. Sometimes I've heard talk of the Bible being a 00:02:38.16\00:02:43.39 very patriarchal, man-centered book where women were demeaned 00:02:43.43\00:02:48.70 and looked down upon. While that I'm sure was the case in some 00:02:48.74\00:02:53.02 places of the world, and it even is today in some places of the 00:02:53.06\00:02:57.17 world, it doesn't seem to have been the case in Philippi. This 00:02:57.21\00:03:01.68 woman, Lydia, is listed as a seller of purple. In other words 00:03:01.71\00:03:06.15 she was a business woman, a prominent business woman and 00:03:06.18\00:03:10.81 scholars assume that this woman Lydia, from what we know about 00:03:10.85\00:03:14.88 her, was a woman of means and influence. So whereas there may 00:03:14.92\00:03:18.89 have been places in the Bible and cultures where women may 00:03:18.92\00:03:22.82 have been looked down upon that was not the case universally in 00:03:22.86\00:03:26.28 scripture and Lydia is an example of that. She's a woman 00:03:26.31\00:03:29.73 of influence which is also important when Paul is 00:03:29.76\00:03:32.99 witnessing because when she makes her decision and she has 00:03:33.03\00:03:36.31 influence there's an impact, a ripple effect that going to go 00:03:36.34\00:03:40.44 through this area. Now the Bible tells us further of Lydia that 00:03:40.48\00:03:44.16 the Lord, and I love the way it words this in verse 14, The Lord 00:03:44.19\00:03:48.79 opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. You know, 00:03:48.82\00:03:53.38 sometimes when the truth is presented we're all about 00:03:53.42\00:03:58.31 hearing and not heeding. The Lord opened her heart not just 00:03:58.35\00:04:02.98 to hear and cogitate and meditate on it and have some 00:04:03.02\00:04:08.52 mental assent to something, but to change her practices, her 00:04:08.56\00:04:13.16 life practices to heed the things spoken of by Paul that 00:04:13.19\00:04:17.72 would materially change her life and she was open to doing that 00:04:17.76\00:04:22.87 and that openness led to her baptism and, notice, her 00:04:22.91\00:04:26.27 household was baptized. So again speaking of her influence and 00:04:26.31\00:04:30.64 this became the beginnings of the church in Philippi. 00:04:30.68\00:04:33.96 That's right. And you know touching on your comment about 00:04:34.00\00:04:38.55 the prominence that Lydia had as a female in that society, as 00:04:38.58\00:04:41.93 we keep going through the book of Acts we'll find a couple of 00:04:41.97\00:04:46.49 different places where the writer of Acts, Luke, notes the 00:04:46.53\00:04:51.26 number of prominent Greeks and leading women who came to the 00:04:51.30\00:04:55.30 faith. So the Bible is very clear to give this sense of 00:04:55.33\00:05:00.42 equality in terms of everyone now being open to the door of 00:05:00.45\00:05:04.87 salvation and being seen as equals in value and worth in the 00:05:04.90\00:05:08.56 eyes of God and that's just a beautiful part that we see in 00:05:08.59\00:05:12.21 the book of Acts. That's right. Now in verse 16 it 00:05:12.25\00:05:14.92 says, Now it happened as we went to prayer, and this is what you 00:05:14.96\00:05:17.82 were mentioning a moment ago, this is a phrase that in the 00:05:17.85\00:05:21.98 common vernacular might just be we went to church. But still I 00:05:22.02\00:05:25.85 think it's worth mentioning that as evangelistic as Paul was and 00:05:25.88\00:05:29.68 as active as he was he took time for prayer. He didn't get 00:05:29.71\00:05:34.44 so busy that he didn't make sure that he kept his communion and 00:05:34.48\00:05:38.08 connection with God. Here we find that, As we went to prayer, 00:05:38.12\00:05:42.39 a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met 00:05:42.43\00:05:46.61 us. Now that's interesting, a spirit of divination. Now we can 00:05:46.65\00:05:50.78 get the idea here that more than likely this is going to be not a 00:05:50.81\00:05:54.91 good spirit. If you would pardon me to go 00:05:54.94\00:05:59.03 back just a little bit. That point you made on prayer. 00:05:59.06\00:06:01.14 I've encountered people involved in ministry, and of course I'm 00:06:01.17\00:06:06.77 involved in ministry, can tend sometimes to 00:06:06.80\00:06:10.60 feel like that ministry exempts 00:06:10.63\00:06:12.06 them from things like prayer meeting and things like that 00:06:12.10\00:06:15.08 because I'm a part of ministry. Sometimes people will say well 00:06:15.11\00:06:19.71 Pastor I know you're a part of ministry too but you go to 00:06:19.75\00:06:22.98 prayer meeting because you have to, it's your job. But the 00:06:23.01\00:06:26.17 reality is I go because I need to and that's what you're seeing 00:06:26.21\00:06:29.40 in the life of the Apostle Paul. I mean, the man was always 00:06:29.43\00:06:32.56 ministering. But even when he wasn't leading out in something 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.83 he felt his own personal need to be at the house of prayer, be at 00:06:35.86\00:06:39.07 the prayer meeting, be at the worship services and investing 00:06:39.10\00:06:42.08 himself in the work of God and participating in the fellowship. 00:06:42.12\00:06:45.07 That's right. He had a commitment, a discipline, that 00:06:45.10\00:06:47.70 was really the anchor for his faith. Well now we come back to 00:06:47.73\00:06:51.55 this slave girl who is possessed with this spirit of divination 00:06:51.58\00:06:55.36 and it says, She brought her masters much profit by 00:06:55.40\00:06:58.41 fortune telling. So apparently someone found out about the 00:06:58.45\00:07:04.08 strange abilities of this woman and she has this spirit of 00:07:04.11\00:07:08.59 divination which we would assume would probably be an evil 00:07:08.63\00:07:13.04 spirit, but as we keep reading we'll find out. It says in verse 00:07:13.07\00:07:16.71 17, This girl followed Paul and us and cried out saying, these 00:07:16.74\00:07:20.29 men are the servants of the most high God who proclaim to us the 00:07:20.32\00:07:24.09 way of salvation, and this she did for many days. So you get 00:07:24.13\00:07:27.40 the sense that, well, this is a good thing to say, right? I mean 00:07:27.44\00:07:31.48 they are servants of the most high God. She's supporting them. 00:07:31.51\00:07:35.52 But isn't it the case that whenever the cause of truth is 00:07:35.56\00:07:39.34 going forward that fanaticism attends it. Whenever you're 00:07:39.37\00:07:43.12 trying to make a clear stand on something somebody else stands 00:07:43.15\00:07:47.96 with you who happens to have some crazy ideas. It removes the 00:07:48.00\00:07:51.74 credibility of the stand that you're trying to take and that's 00:07:51.77\00:07:55.07 what's happening here with Paul. This woman clearly is not of a 00:07:55.11\00:07:58.84 right spirit but she's on their side and he gets, the Bible 00:07:58.87\00:08:02.79 says, annoyed. Greatly annoyed. Yes he does. It says, But Paul, 00:08:02.83\00:08:06.92 greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in 00:08:06.95\00:08:11.03 the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out that 00:08:11.06\00:08:15.19 very hour. But when her masters saw that their hope of profit 00:08:15.23\00:08:18.84 was gone they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the 00:08:18.88\00:08:22.51 market place to the authorities. So this kind of reminds me of 00:08:22.54\00:08:26.14 when Jesus cast the legion of demons out of the demon 00:08:26.17\00:08:29.67 possessed man and they went into the swine. You know that story. 00:08:29.70\00:08:33.66 And the swine ran off the cliff. Then the owners of the swine 00:08:33.70\00:08:37.63 that was part of their possessions there. They wanted 00:08:37.66\00:08:40.89 Jesus out of town. They weren't so concerned with this spiritual 00:08:40.92\00:08:44.21 healing as much as their physical loss and that's what 00:08:44.25\00:08:48.05 you see here. They're upset only because this woman was bringing 00:08:48.08\00:08:51.19 them money and now she's ruined when really she was healed. 00:08:51.23\00:08:54.87 It's also interesting to note that she was foretelling things. 00:08:54.91\00:08:58.16 That's right. But she was doing it from the wrong spirit and 00:08:58.20\00:09:01.12 once again just because there's some supernatural something 00:09:01.15\00:09:04.20 doesn't mean it comes from the Lord. Many times it can be 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.26 derailing us and deceiving us. 00:09:07.29\00:09:08.41 One of several times in the book of Acts where we see that. 00:09:08.45\00:09:10.93 In verse 20 it says, They brought them to the magistrates 00:09:10.97\00:09:13.65 and it says, These men being Jews exceedingly trouble our 00:09:13.68\00:09:16.43 city and they teach customs which are not lawful for us 00:09:16.46\00:09:19.44 being Romans to receive or observe. Then the multitude rose 00:09:19.48\00:09:22.17 up together against them. The magistrates tore off their 00:09:22.21\00:09:24.83 clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. Once again, 00:09:24.87\00:09:29.44 sufferings that the apostles experienced. And when they had 00:09:29.47\00:09:34.01 laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison 00:09:34.04\00:09:36.22 commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Having received 00:09:36.25\00:09:40.48 such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened 00:09:40.52\00:09:44.17 their feet in the stocks. I feel like I've seen this before. 00:09:44.20\00:09:47.84 That's right. The last time I think we saw this Peter was 00:09:47.87\00:09:51.48 guarded by the four squads of soldiers... 00:09:51.51\00:09:53.81 With two soldiers chained, one on each arm... 00:09:53.85\00:09:55.82 one on each side, that's right, that's right. 00:09:55.86\00:09:57.76 So he couldn't get away. There's no way the Lord can take him 00:09:57.80\00:10:01.81 from us or anybody could break him free. 00:10:01.85\00:10:03.94 But the Lord allowed them to have that type of strength of 00:10:03.98\00:10:07.61 security so that he could show his power. 00:10:07.64\00:10:10.64 That's right and so we see it again. Here they're taken, 00:10:10.68\00:10:12.93 they're put into the prison, as you said, the inner prison and 00:10:12.96\00:10:16.02 their feet are in the stocks. Now what's fascinating to me, 00:10:16.06\00:10:20.61 Jim, in this narrative is that they've just been beaten with 00:10:20.65\00:10:25.14 rods and the beating takes place on the back and they lay stripes 00:10:25.17\00:10:29.86 which is just a word for the fact that it's cut into your 00:10:29.90\00:10:33.24 flesh and left scars. Now there are fresh wounds on their backs, 00:10:33.28\00:10:37.68 they're in this jail cell and I'm sure it's not all that clean 00:10:37.72\00:10:42.76 hard dirt or concrete floors or stone floors and their feet are 00:10:42.79\00:10:47.35 in the stocks which means their feet are up somewhere. You know 00:10:47.39\00:10:50.93 sometimes the arms would be in the stocks, but in this case 00:10:50.96\00:10:55.11 their backs are left with their feet up in a position where 00:10:55.14\00:10:59.61 those fresh wounds are on that floor and you can imagine the 00:10:59.65\00:11:03.16 pain of that just having gone through the beating. So what are 00:11:03.19\00:11:06.74 they doing? Cursing or depressed and more. No. Look at what it 00:11:06.77\00:11:10.79 says in verse 25. At midnight Paul and Silas were praying and 00:11:10.83\00:11:14.81 singing hymns to God and the prisoners were listening to 00:11:14.85\00:11:18.40 them. They were amazed. What's going on here? And the Bible 00:11:18.43\00:11:22.17 goes on to say that suddenly there was a great earthquake 00:11:22.20\00:11:25.48 so the foundations of the prison were shaken. So you know the 00:11:25.52\00:11:28.31 Lord has one way or another to open them up. This time it's not 00:11:28.34\00:11:31.06 an angel, it's an earthquake. And immediately all the doors 00:11:31.10\00:11:33.88 were opened, everybody's chains were loosed and the keeper of 00:11:33.91\00:11:36.60 the prison awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open 00:11:36.63\00:11:39.55 supposing the prisoners had fled drew his sword to be about to 00:11:39.58\00:11:42.46 kill himself. Remember the guards were killed when Peter 00:11:42.50\00:11:46.29 was set free. So he figures he'll be killed, I may as well 00:11:46.32\00:11:50.04 kill myself. But Paul calls out, in verse 28, with a loud voice, 00:11:50.07\00:11:53.48 don't do yourself harm. We're all here. And of course the man 00:11:53.52\00:11:56.66 now is amazed. He sees there's a supernatural hand and he 00:11:56.69\00:12:00.37 trembles. Sirs, what must I do to be saved. And verse 30, And 00:12:00.40\00:12:03.94 they said to him believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will 00:12:03.98\00:12:07.92 be saved, you and your household and they spoke the word of the 00:12:07.95\00:12:11.70 Lord to him and all who were in his house and the Bible says 00:12:11.73\00:12:15.44 they all believed and were baptized. Once again the 00:12:15.48\00:12:19.70 Macedonian call results in now the salvation of another 00:12:19.74\00:12:23.44 household. These households, Lydia's household and the 00:12:23.48\00:12:26.60 household of the Philippian jailer became the beginnings 00:12:26.64\00:12:30.89 of the Macedonian church, the church of Philippi as a result 00:12:30.92\00:12:35.14 of them answering the Macedonian call. 00:12:35.18\00:12:38.32 Amen. Well we get into verse 35 and it says, When it was the day 00:12:38.35\00:12:42.54 the magistrates sent the officers saying let those men 00:12:42.58\00:12:45.65 go. So now they're going to let them go as if they couldn't have 00:12:45.68\00:12:49.49 gone on their own. And in verse 36 it says, So the keeper of the 00:12:49.53\00:12:52.75 prison reported these words to Paul saying the magistrates have 00:12:52.78\00:12:56.52 sent to let you go. Depart, go in peace. But Paul answers a 00:12:56.55\00:13:00.13 little bit surprisingly. He says They have beaten us openly 00:13:00.16\00:13:03.83 uncondemned Romans, and that's the key word here, and they have 00:13:03.86\00:13:07.49 thrown us into prison and now do they put us out secretly. 00:13:07.53\00:13:11.82 No indeed. Let them come themselves and get us out. 00:13:11.85\00:13:15.96 So you see while Paul was willing to surrender and be 00:13:16.00\00:13:20.04 submissive and you saw the great humility of the Apostle Paul, he 00:13:20.07\00:13:23.96 also, when the law demanded it, he would hold people to 00:13:24.00\00:13:28.03 accountability and he was holding them here to 00:13:28.07\00:13:30.15 accountability. It says in verse 38, The officers told these 00:13:30.18\00:13:33.51 words to the magistrates and they were afraid when they 00:13:33.54\00:13:36.79 heard that they were Romans because that was a great offense 00:13:36.83\00:13:41.05 to abuse a Roman citizen. So they had reason to be afraid. 00:13:41.08\00:13:44.20 But they came and pleaded with them, brought them out, asked 00:13:44.24\00:13:47.01 them to depart from the city. So they sent out of the prison, 00:13:47.05\00:13:49.87 they went back to Lydia's house, and when they had seen the 00:13:49.91\00:13:52.57 brethren they encouraged them and departed. And now the 00:13:52.61\00:13:55.23 Apostle Paul brushes off the dust and he's off to 00:13:55.27\00:13:58.56 Thessalonica. One encouraging visit after another, one answer 00:13:58.59\00:14:03.62 to the Spirit's call after another. May God bless you as 00:14:03.65\00:14:07.00 you answer the Spirit's call. 00:14:07.03\00:14:08.39
