Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:02.00\00:00:03.03 Before the break we were looking here in Acts chapter 14 at a 00:00:03.06\00:00:08.53 miraculous story of healing by the Apostle Paul in the city of 00:00:08.57\00:00:13.72 Lystra. You know, Mark, we read through this story but there are 00:00:13.75\00:00:18.87 a couple points that are very important to take a look at. 00:00:18.90\00:00:23.24 In verse 9, it says that when this lame man, this cripple who 00:00:23.28\00:00:27.43 was crippled from his mother's womb heard Paul speaking, Paul 00:00:27.47\00:00:32.80 observed him intently. Now first of all, this kind of speaks to 00:00:32.83\00:00:38.13 the fact that Paul is always watching and looking for the 00:00:38.16\00:00:41.41 heart of his hearers, looking for the response of those, 00:00:41.45\00:00:44.63 that's right, looking for signs of conviction, looking for those 00:00:44.67\00:00:48.04 who may be open to the truth that he's sharing. And he looks, 00:00:48.07\00:00:52.56 and he's observing this crippled man intently and it says that 00:00:52.59\00:00:56.70 from an observation, it says, And seeing that he had faith to 00:00:56.73\00:01:01.58 be healed said with a loud voice Isn't that fascinating. He's 00:01:01.62\00:01:06.43 speaking and the Bible says... 00:01:06.47\00:01:08.81 Sometimes you get the impression in the New Testament that it's 00:01:08.85\00:01:11.56 up to the apostles who they heal. I'm going to pick this guy 00:01:11.60\00:01:14.28 I'll pick this guy and I'll just heal them but... 00:01:14.32\00:01:16.80 That's right. But it didn't seem that way. He was intently 00:01:16.83\00:01:18.98 looking and he saw probably from the words that he was speaking 00:01:19.02\00:01:23.63 and the openness that he could see, perhaps the longing eyes of 00:01:23.66\00:01:28.24 wanting something better and he was looking at this man... 00:01:28.27\00:01:31.68 Perhaps tears in his eyes as he heard about Christ and his 00:01:31.72\00:01:35.09 crucifixion... And it says he saw that he had 00:01:35.13\00:01:39.03 faith to be healed. It makes me think of a story in the gospels. 00:01:39.07\00:01:42.99 I want to look at a story in the gospel of Luke and chapter 5 00:01:43.02\00:01:47.32 where it says the same thing about Jesus. If you look in Luke 00:01:47.36\00:01:53.22 chapter 5 and verse 17. It says, Now it happened on a certain day 00:01:53.25\00:01:59.08 as he was teaching that there were Pharisees and teachers of 00:01:59.11\00:02:02.54 the law sitting by who had come out of every town of Galilee, 00:02:02.57\00:02:06.30 Judea and Jerusalem and the power of the Lord was present 00:02:06.34\00:02:10.25 to heal them. Then behold men brought on a bed a man who was 00:02:10.29\00:02:14.20 paralyzed whom they sought to bring in and lay before him. 00:02:14.24\00:02:17.91 And when they could not find out how they might bring him in 00:02:17.95\00:02:21.42 because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him 00:02:21.46\00:02:25.25 down with his bed through the tiling in the midst before Jesus 00:02:25.28\00:02:29.61 So here you see this paralytic and he's got four friends who 00:02:29.64\00:02:33.90 see that Jesus is an opportunity for him to be healed and so they 00:02:33.94\00:02:38.00 come to the home and there's no room for them. There's too big 00:02:38.03\00:02:41.59 of a crowd and you would think that they would walk away, that 00:02:41.63\00:02:44.69 that would be it. We can't get in, there's no way to get in. 00:02:44.73\00:02:49.20 But they had such confidence that Jesus could heal and they 00:02:49.23\00:02:53.25 had such desperation in a sense that the only hope for this 00:02:53.28\00:02:57.41 paralytic was Jesus that they climbed up on the roof and they 00:02:57.45\00:03:01.47 removed some of the tiles and they lowered the man down and 00:03:01.51\00:03:05.53 the Bible says in the next verse in verse 20, When he (that is 00:03:05.57\00:03:10.20 Jesus) saw their faith... You know we think of faith as an 00:03:10.24\00:03:16.04 internal belief, but it is visible when acted out in our 00:03:16.08\00:03:21.81 life and Jesus could tell by the fact that these men went to such 00:03:21.84\00:03:27.00 pains to bring this man in. He knew that they must believe that 00:03:27.03\00:03:31.73 he was able to heal. And faith, if it is real and genuine, will 00:03:31.77\00:03:36.00 always lead someone to action and we see that all throughout 00:03:36.04\00:03:40.17 the Bible. And here we see it in this story where Paul observes 00:03:40.20\00:03:44.52 that this man had faith to be healed. We don't know exactly 00:03:44.55\00:03:48.07 what it looked like but we know that it can be seen, it can be 00:03:48.11\00:03:51.48 visible because we saw that in the story of Jesus. But after he 00:03:51.51\00:03:54.64 heals him and he's walking and leaping just like the man did 00:03:54.67\00:03:57.76 in Acts chapter 3, it's fascinating to me that these 00:03:57.79\00:04:02.47 Gentiles in Lystra say the gods have come down to us in the 00:04:02.51\00:04:07.41 likeness of men. The gods have come down to us in the likeness 00:04:07.45\00:04:12.32 of men. It's the gospel even though they didn't understand 00:04:12.35\00:04:17.90 it. In fact, Jesus is God and Jesus did come in the likeness 00:04:17.94\00:04:23.86 of men. They almost say it in a disbelieving way and yet we know 00:04:23.89\00:04:29.77 that it's true that Jesus did come in the likeness of men. 00:04:29.81\00:04:33.65 But unfortunately the record says... 00:04:33.69\00:04:35.86 Well you know, Jim, it makes me think of Daniel chapter 2 when 00:04:35.89\00:04:41.38 the magicians of Nebuchadnezzar when Nebuchadnezzar had a dream 00:04:41.41\00:04:45.71 and he wanted to know the dream they said the only one who 00:04:45.75\00:04:49.69 knows the dream are the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh 00:04:49.72\00:04:53.63 In other words, for them the gods don't have anything... 00:04:53.66\00:04:56.91 You know we are not worthy of their notice. 00:04:56.94\00:04:59.26 That's right, that's right. And we recognize that even for those 00:04:59.29\00:05:03.88 who were understanding of the true God that the Bible says in 00:05:03.92\00:05:08.41 John chapter 1 and verse 11 that he came to his own but his own 00:05:08.45\00:05:12.91 received him not. So God did come to his own and this is a 00:05:12.95\00:05:18.21 primary distinction between true Christianity and all false 00:05:18.25\00:05:23.44 religions and these were pagans. They had understanding of false 00:05:23.47\00:05:27.81 religion which gives you a sense that if you want to be accepted 00:05:27.84\00:05:32.14 by the gods you need to go to them. You need to somehow 00:05:32.18\00:05:38.24 improve your behavior to be brought into their favor or, as 00:05:38.27\00:05:44.30 you remember when the prophets of Baal danced around the altar 00:05:44.34\00:05:49.61 on that day when Elijah stood on Mt. Carmel, that they were 00:05:49.64\00:05:53.90 crying out to the gods and cutting themselves thinking that 00:05:53.94\00:05:57.74 they had to do something that would show their dedication and 00:05:57.77\00:06:01.59 sacrifice in order to cause the gods to look favorably upon 00:06:01.62\00:06:05.07 them. And you look at the different religions of the world 00:06:05.11\00:06:10.10 Islam and the eastern religions Hinduism and the like. The 00:06:10.14\00:06:15.06 deities involved all are seeking for humanity to do something to 00:06:15.10\00:06:21.87 gain favor, whereas in Christianity God did come, God 00:06:21.91\00:06:26.02 did come in the likeness of a man. He came after us instead of 00:06:26.05\00:06:30.07 us having to reach after him. 00:06:30.10\00:06:31.40 And we see that actually picked up as in the response of the 00:06:31.44\00:06:35.52 apostles. In verse 14 it says, When the apostles, Barnabas and 00:06:35.56\00:06:39.32 Paul, heard this they tore their clothes and ran in among the 00:06:39.36\00:06:42.48 multitude. Now this was a Jewish custom of tearing the clothes 00:06:42.52\00:06:46.32 which was expressing rending the heart, deep, intense anguish and 00:06:46.36\00:06:51.10 in this part it says, They ran among the multitude crying out 00:06:51.13\00:06:56.45 saying, Men why are you doing these things. We also are men 00:06:56.49\00:07:02.20 with the same nature as you and preached to you that you should 00:07:02.24\00:07:07.05 turn from these useless things to the living God who made the 00:07:07.08\00:07:11.97 heaven, the earth, the sea and all things that are in them. 00:07:12.00\00:07:17.16 Now first of all, I think back just a few chapters where Peter 00:07:17.20\00:07:21.18 was delivered from prison and the angel touched him and woke 00:07:21.21\00:07:24.63 him up. And at the same time the angel touched Herod and struck 00:07:24.67\00:07:29.04 him. Herod was vaunting himself and the people said, He is a god 00:07:29.07\00:07:33.40 and how men like that praise. What an honor. But Paul and 00:07:33.44\00:07:37.75 Barnabas are not looking for that. They're wanting to direct 00:07:37.79\00:07:42.07 the attention to the God of heaven and they bring a few 00:07:42.10\00:07:44.77 interesting things up about him. First of all, he is the living 00:07:44.81\00:07:48.32 God, not like these other gods. He made the heaven, the earth, 00:07:48.35\00:07:51.73 the sea and all things that are in them. That's characteristic. 00:07:51.77\00:07:54.94 He's the creator God. Then it's interesting in verse 16 he says, 00:07:54.97\00:07:58.10 Who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in 00:07:58.14\00:08:02.66 their own ways. Nevertheless, he did not leave himself without 00:08:02.70\00:08:07.10 witness in that he did good, gave us rain from heaven and 00:08:07.14\00:08:10.04 fruitful seasons filling our hearts with food and gladness 00:08:10.07\00:08:12.90 and with these things they could scarcely restrain the multitudes 00:08:12.94\00:08:16.73 from sacrificing to them. Now I just want to touch on that. 00:08:16.76\00:08:20.60 God allowed the nations to walk in their own ways. God never 00:08:20.64\00:08:24.80 forced anybody to serve him, but he always left a witness of 00:08:24.83\00:08:28.41 himself and notice what he says, He gave us rain, fruitful 00:08:28.45\00:08:32.00 seasons filling our hearts with food and gladness. 00:08:32.03\00:08:33.81 It's interesting that there are many people today who say well 00:08:33.84\00:08:36.40 I can't believe in God because of all the evil in the world. 00:08:36.43\00:08:39.64 Well what about the good in the world? What about the blessings? 00:08:39.67\00:08:44.06 You know, if we're going to tag God out because of the evil then 00:08:44.09\00:08:48.45 we've got to give him the same credit for the blessings and 00:08:48.48\00:08:50.88 what the Bible is saying here is... And the fact of the matter 00:08:50.92\00:08:53.70 is the Bible tells us that he's not the author of the evil, but 00:08:53.73\00:08:56.48 he is the author of the blessings, of every good and 00:08:56.52\00:08:58.61 perfect gift. The apostles say here that he did not leave 00:08:58.64\00:09:02.75 himself without witness. We've got the evidence of his 00:09:02.79\00:09:06.83 creatorship, we've got the evidence in the good that we see 00:09:06.86\00:09:09.61 in the rain, the providence we have, the food on our tables, 00:09:09.64\00:09:13.43 etc., that the Lord is seeking to bless and wanting to draw us 00:09:13.47\00:09:17.22 to himself. You know, I see in that verse 00:09:17.26\00:09:19.25 also, in verse 16, Who in bygone generations allowed all nations 00:09:19.29\00:09:22.89 to walk in their own ways, but you get the sense that he's 00:09:22.92\00:09:25.74 saying, But not anymore. I mean the gospel is going to the 00:09:25.77\00:09:29.90 Gentiles now and there's this clear sense that there's a 00:09:29.94\00:09:33.99 message coming that they need to now respond to. He's allowed 00:09:34.03\00:09:37.12 them in bygone generations, but now the times have changed. 00:09:37.15\00:09:40.80 That's right. And of course they are just not pleased with this 00:09:40.84\00:09:44.45 message. So much so, it says, that they take... Having 00:09:44.49\00:09:47.45 persuaded the multitudes, it says, the Jews from Antioch 00:09:47.48\00:09:50.18 and Iconium came there and persuaded the multitudes and 00:09:50.21\00:09:52.84 they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city supposing him to 00:09:52.87\00:09:56.55 be dead. Wow! That's incredible! You know 00:09:56.58\00:09:59.48 you look here in verse 18. It says that they could scarcely 00:09:59.51\00:10:03.15 restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them and yet 00:10:03.18\00:10:07.94 these Jews come down and stir up the crowd again. This is a 00:10:07.97\00:10:12.94 continual theme. And they persuade the multitudes, so much 00:10:12.98\00:10:17.15 so that they stoned Paul and dragged him supposing him to be 00:10:17.18\00:10:21.16 dead. I mean that's miraculous. In verse 20 it says, However 00:10:21.19\00:10:25.25 when the disciples gathered around him, as if to say, Oh our 00:10:25.29\00:10:29.27 beloved Paul is gone It says, He rose up and went, where? Back to 00:10:29.31\00:10:34.22 the city. I can't even believe it. It says, And the next day he 00:10:34.26\00:10:38.26 departed with Barnabas to Derbe. Business as usual. I mean it's 00:10:38.30\00:10:43.05 incredible in verse 20. He is stoned, dragged out, and he goes 00:10:43.08\00:10:47.28 back in just for good measure before he leaves the next day. 00:10:47.32\00:10:50.74 Just say I wasn't intimidated by it. I'm moving on. I've got a 00:10:50.78\00:10:54.88 mission. So in verse 23 it takes us on to the fact that, it says, 00:10:54.91\00:10:58.58 They appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting 00:10:58.61\00:11:01.80 we saw that earlier in chapter 13 when he and Barnabas were 00:11:01.83\00:11:04.95 sent out with prayer and fasting They commended them to the Lord. 00:11:04.98\00:11:07.75 They moved on through Pisidia, Pamphylia, Perga, Italia and 00:11:07.79\00:11:11.52 then they come back to their home church in Antioch, report 00:11:11.56\00:11:14.67 what's happened and the Bible says there they stayed for a 00:11:14.70\00:11:17.73 long time with the disciples. And so they complete that first 00:11:17.77\00:11:20.77 missionary journey and what a powerful ministry. 00:11:20.80\00:11:24.17 Amen, amen. You know there's a couple verses that we passed 00:11:24.21\00:11:26.84 over there that we need to focus on there as we bring this to a 00:11:26.88\00:11:29.48 close. In verse 21 it says, And when they had preached the 00:11:29.52\00:11:33.87 gospel to that city, okay, Derbe and made many disciples, they 00:11:33.91\00:11:38.02 returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch strengthening the souls 00:11:38.05\00:11:42.76 of the disciples. Now at first reading that just sounds kind of 00:11:42.80\00:11:47.47 like a common verse. They returned to Lystra, Iconium and 00:11:47.51\00:11:51.13 Antioch. But look at where they actually returned. You look at 00:11:51.17\00:11:56.21 chapter 13, verse 50. That's Antioch. After Antioch it says 00:11:56.24\00:12:00.26 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and 00:12:00.29\00:12:03.46 the chief men of the city and raised up persecution against 00:12:03.49\00:12:06.97 Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their region. So they 00:12:07.01\00:12:10.52 are going back to Antioch where they were expelled from. Then 00:12:10.56\00:12:14.41 if you look at chapter 14 verse 5, it talks about what happened 00:12:14.44\00:12:18.23 at the end of Iconium. And when a violent attempt was made by 00:12:18.26\00:12:21.62 both the Gentiles and Jews with their rulers to abuse and stone 00:12:21.66\00:12:25.35 them they became aware of it. So back in Iconium there was a 00:12:25.39\00:12:29.11 plot to abuse and stone them. They went back there. And then 00:12:29.15\00:12:32.84 if you look at verse 19 of chapter 14, we just read it. 00:12:32.87\00:12:36.29 The Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there and having 00:12:36.33\00:12:39.68 persuaded them they stoned him. So these three places where they 00:12:39.72\00:12:43.80 were clearly kicked out or stoned or plotted against are 00:12:43.84\00:12:47.14 the exact placed that Paul went back to. And that's why it says 00:12:47.17\00:12:51.00 in verse 22, there, Strengthening the souls of the 00:12:51.04\00:12:54.64 disciples exhorting them to continue in the faith and saying 00:12:54.68\00:12:58.64 we must through many tribulations enter the kingdom 00:12:58.67\00:13:01.75 of God. Wow! You know, the thing I like about the Apostle Paul is 00:13:01.78\00:13:06.23 he practiced what he preached. He said, you know what? It's 00:13:06.26\00:13:09.77 through many tribulations that we must enter the kingdom of 00:13:09.80\00:13:14.43 God. And friends as we look at this passage in Acts chapter 14 00:13:14.46\00:13:19.06 and we think about the difficulties that we experience 00:13:19.09\00:13:22.27 and the challenges in our own Christian life, we have to 00:13:22.31\00:13:25.61 remember that they are all preparing us. That tribulation 00:13:25.65\00:13:28.96 is producing perseverance and character and hope and we can 00:13:29.00\00:13:32.46 be sure that God will see us through just like he did the 00:13:32.49\00:13:35.92 Apostle Paul. We'll see you next time on Books of the Book. 00:13:35.95\00:13:39.34
