Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.24\00:00:23.27 I'm Pastor Mark Howard and I'm here with my cohost, Jim Howard, 00:00:23.30\00:00:26.43 who just happens to be my brother and a pastor as well. 00:00:26.46\00:00:28.89 We are pastoring in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day 00:00:28.92\00:00:31.55 Adventists. Jim is on the east side of the state near Detroit 00:00:31.58\00:00:34.44 in Detroit and I am on the west side of the state in a little 00:00:34.47\00:00:37.68 place called Gobels as well as directing a school of evangelism 00:00:37.72\00:00:40.78 for the Michigan Conference called the Immanuel Institute of 00:00:40.82\00:00:44.52 Evangelism and that has been a lot of the reason that I've been 00:00:44.56\00:00:47.93 interested in studying the book of Acts, because we see in the 00:00:47.96\00:00:51.67 book of Acts this is the book of evangelism, this is the book 00:00:51.70\00:00:55.30 where we see the mission of the church being carried out in 00:00:55.34\00:00:59.11 practical terms. And it's been exciting to watch in spite of 00:00:59.14\00:01:02.87 all the odds, Jim, that keep coming upon the church, it 00:01:02.91\00:01:06.79 continues to grow. Sometimes today when we talk about the 00:01:06.82\00:01:10.44 church and the growth of the church we lament over all the 00:01:10.47\00:01:13.76 difficulties that we have in forwarding the gospel and 00:01:13.80\00:01:17.02 opposition that we meet but, I don't know, so far it's nothing 00:01:17.05\00:01:22.02 compared to what we're seeing here. For example now, we 00:01:22.06\00:01:24.77 finished last time in chapter 13 of Acts and I want to recap the 00:01:24.81\00:01:29.33 last few verses of chapter 13 but as our custom has been here 00:01:29.36\00:01:33.91 we have asked the Lord to guide our understanding as we turn our 00:01:33.95\00:01:37.18 attention to the word. So I'm going to ask if you would pray 00:01:37.22\00:01:41.52 with us now. Heaven Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would 00:01:41.56\00:01:45.59 again be present to guide our study of your word and Father 00:01:45.63\00:01:49.63 we ask it in the name of Jesus and for his sake, Amen. 00:01:49.66\00:01:52.44 Acts chapter 13. I hope you have your Bibles with you and we're 00:01:52.47\00:01:58.58 going to go to verse 48. Now what happened in chapter 13 is 00:01:58.61\00:02:06.03 Paul preached a powerful sermon in Acts chapter 13 where when 00:02:06.07\00:02:11.77 he finished preaching and giving proofs from scripture that Jesus 00:02:11.80\00:02:17.47 was indeed the Messiah that was to come, both the Jew and 00:02:17.51\00:02:21.13 Gentile listeners begged him that he would preach the same 00:02:21.17\00:02:24.56 words to them the next Sabbath and the Bible tells us the next 00:02:24.60\00:02:28.51 Sabbath nearly the whole city came together. As is typical, 00:02:28.54\00:02:32.21 when Paul was done preaching, some were praising God, but some 00:02:32.25\00:02:36.09 were very upset. In fact, verse 46 says that Paul told his 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.93 audience, his Jewish audience, and when I say this we 00:02:39.96\00:02:44.93 understand that Paul was Jew, Barnabas was a Jew. It's not 00:02:44.97\00:02:48.63 that all the Jews were enemies but the Jewish nation, the 00:02:48.67\00:02:52.57 Jewish leaders in this locale for example unfortunately 00:02:52.60\00:02:56.43 rejected this testimony. And Paul says that, verse 46, Since 00:02:56.47\00:03:02.88 you reject this message you judge yourselves unworthy of 00:03:02.91\00:03:08.33 everlasting life. Behold, we turn to the Gentiles. Now that 00:03:08.37\00:03:13.86 phrase, you judge yourselves unworthy, God didn't judge them 00:03:13.90\00:03:18.65 unworthy. God was offering salvation, but they refused it. 00:03:18.68\00:03:22.92 It's important to understand that I've heard some Christians 00:03:22.96\00:03:26.88 who have this mindset that God has predetermined the people 00:03:26.91\00:03:30.26 who are going to be saved and lost and you know you just might 00:03:30.29\00:03:33.14 be without luck. He might have chosen that he's not going to 00:03:33.17\00:03:35.91 give you the opportunity. But that is not found anywhere in 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.39 scripture. In fact, the most famous text in scripture, 00:03:38.42\00:03:41.40 John 3:16 says, Whosoever believes in him should not 00:03:41.43\00:03:44.34 perish. God so loved the world. So you have this universal 00:03:44.37\00:03:48.41 invitation that's given but if we refuse it we judge ourselves 00:03:48.44\00:03:52.34 unworthy. So it says in verse 48 When the Gentiles heard this 00:03:52.37\00:03:56.23 they were glad and they glorified the word of the Lord 00:03:56.27\00:04:00.85 and the word of the Lord, verse 49, was being spread throughout 00:04:00.88\00:04:04.09 all the region. Verse 50 says, But the Jews stirred up the 00:04:04.13\00:04:07.58 devout and prominent women and chief men of the city raised up 00:04:07.61\00:04:10.54 persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from 00:04:10.57\00:04:14.44 the region but they shook the dust from off their feet against 00:04:14.47\00:04:18.03 them and came to Iconium and the disciples were filled with 00:04:18.06\00:04:22.35 joy and with the Holy Spirit. So as you capped it in our last 00:04:22.39\00:04:27.71 presentation of our last study, the Gentiles were glad and the 00:04:27.74\00:04:33.05 Jews were mad. That's where we move into chapter 14. As they 00:04:33.08\00:04:38.59 come into Iconium, chapter 14, verse 1, the Bible says, Now it 00:04:38.62\00:04:43.52 happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue 00:04:43.55\00:04:48.53 of the Jews and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews 00:04:48.57\00:04:54.03 and the Greeks believed. But the unbelieving Jews, and this is 00:04:54.06\00:04:58.60 starting to be a recurring theme The unbelieving Jews stirred up 00:04:58.64\00:05:03.14 the multitudes, or stirred up in this case the Gentiles and 00:05:03.17\00:05:07.12 poisoned their minds against their brethren. Now I want to 00:05:07.16\00:05:11.04 come back to that in a minute. Now it goes on to say, Therefore 00:05:11.07\00:05:15.22 they stayed there a long time speaking boldly in the Lord who 00:05:15.25\00:05:19.37 who was bearing witness to the word of his grace and granting 00:05:19.40\00:05:22.52 signs and wonders to be done by their hands. But the multitude 00:05:22.56\00:05:25.63 of the city was divided, part sided with the Jews and part 00:05:25.67\00:05:29.47 with the apostles and when a violent attempt was made by 00:05:29.50\00:05:32.90 both the Gentles and the Jews with the rulers to abuse and 00:05:32.94\00:05:36.27 stone them... That's what we were just talking about, right? 00:05:36.30\00:05:39.60 I mean we talk about what opposition we have today, but 00:05:39.63\00:05:43.39 I'm not saying that these things don't happen today in parts of 00:05:43.43\00:05:46.85 the world, but in a lot of parts of the world we have freedoms 00:05:46.88\00:05:50.27 still to be able to study and follow the word of God that 00:05:50.31\00:05:53.54 not everybody has and they didn't have here. They became 00:05:53.57\00:05:56.74 aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia 00:05:56.77\00:06:02.14 and to the surrounding region, and they were preaching the 00:06:02.17\00:06:06.77 gospel there. Now a couple things here, Jim. I want to 00:06:06.80\00:06:10.78 pause for a minute and discuss this stirring up. We keep 00:06:10.81\00:06:14.03 talking about it. They stirred up the people. What does that 00:06:14.07\00:06:17.78 mean? What does it look like to stir up the people? Why? 00:06:17.82\00:06:22.14 They certainly weren't uniting them with joy. They were 00:06:22.18\00:06:25.62 stirring up with them with bitterness or somehow trying 00:06:25.66\00:06:29.03 to give false accusations or in some way stirring them up to 00:06:29.07\00:06:32.87 bring them against and to intimidate the preaching of the 00:06:32.90\00:06:36.67 apostles. That's right and it says here 00:06:36.71\00:06:38.47 they stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds, and I have 00:06:38.51\00:06:42.71 a marginal reading that says embittered. But the reason I'm 00:06:42.75\00:06:48.07 asking this is this kind of thing... You know that the 00:06:48.11\00:06:51.29 Apostle Paul tells us that we are not ignorant of the enemy's 00:06:51.33\00:06:54.10 devices. In other words, the devil still uses the same 00:06:54.14\00:06:57.37 methodology and if this is how he responded to the truth in the 00:06:57.41\00:07:03.36 book of Acts, he will respond the same way today. We've 00:07:03.39\00:07:06.74 touched on this before how we don't see the Jews meeting the 00:07:06.78\00:07:11.26 arguments of Paul and the other apostles with scripture. 00:07:11.29\00:07:15.70 In other words, saying, listen fellows, let's come together and 00:07:15.74\00:07:18.03 let's look at this. You're preaching scripture. Let me show 00:07:18.07\00:07:20.29 you where the scriptures you're preaching are wrong. The reality 00:07:20.33\00:07:23.65 is you don't see that anywhere. What happens is they stir up 00:07:23.69\00:07:26.99 the people, they get violently angry and in this case they're 00:07:27.03\00:07:30.50 trying to kill them. They rally the people together to get 00:07:30.53\00:07:34.96 support and they poison their minds against their brethren. 00:07:35.00\00:07:39.83 So they're evidently speaking things about the characters of 00:07:39.86\00:07:44.66 these individuals. It makes me think of the devil 00:07:44.70\00:07:46.54 himself. In Revelation chapter 12 it calls him the accuser of 00:07:46.58\00:07:51.78 the brethren. We know that we do not wrestle against flesh and 00:07:51.82\00:07:56.35 blood but against principalities and powers, against spiritual 00:07:56.39\00:08:00.88 powers of darkness. So we recognize that this is the... 00:08:00.92\00:08:04.84 We're seeing a lot in the book of Acts by the unbelieving Jews 00:08:04.87\00:08:08.47 and what have you, but ultimately the devil himself is 00:08:08.51\00:08:11.46 doing everything he can to stop the growth of this church 00:08:11.49\00:08:14.40 because right now it's growing fast. 00:08:14.44\00:08:16.19 That's right and we'll see some of these things coming up. You 00:08:16.23\00:08:19.19 know it comes to my mind for example that the rulers in 00:08:19.23\00:08:23.44 Jesus' day said that he cast out devils by the prince of devils. 00:08:23.48\00:08:27.96 and made accusations like that so that they were defaming the 00:08:27.99\00:08:31.90 character of Jesus because they couldn't refute the truth that 00:08:31.93\00:08:35.81 he was preaching. We'll find later on in the book of Acts 00:08:35.84\00:08:39.93 that in one place the Jews gathered together against Paul 00:08:39.96\00:08:43.98 and called him a ring leader of the cult of the Nazarenes and so 00:08:44.02\00:08:47.69 they called him a cult leader. Sometimes tactics like those are 00:08:47.72\00:08:51.92 used to defame the character of a person or a movement instead 00:08:51.96\00:08:56.12 of seeking to refute the truth that's being proclaimed. 00:08:56.16\00:08:58.87 That's right. When you don't have the truth on your side 00:08:58.91\00:09:01.58 you've got do something like that. 00:09:01.62\00:09:02.88 I should add that's not to say... I'm sure the Jews had 00:09:02.92\00:09:05.85 scripture that they taught and preached. They did in the 00:09:05.88\00:09:08.70 synagogue every Sabbath day. It's not that they never used 00:09:08.73\00:09:11.48 any scripture but they wouldn't directly come to the scripture. 00:09:11.51\00:09:15.75 Now I should say that in my own experience where I've studied 00:09:15.79\00:09:19.99 with certain individuals and they've disagreed with a 00:09:20.02\00:09:23.14 position that I take on something, perhaps on... 00:09:23.17\00:09:26.53 We've talked a little bit about the Sabbath. As Seventh-day 00:09:26.56\00:09:29.11 Adventists we believe that the seventh day Sabbath is still 00:09:29.14\00:09:32.52 sacred to God and I've had people that disagree with that. 00:09:32.56\00:09:36.34 You know what, a person has a right to disagree. But I would 00:09:36.38\00:09:40.13 encourage any of our viewers, any Christian, too, if you 00:09:40.16\00:09:45.80 disagree with something. Search the scriptures and see what it 00:09:45.83\00:09:49.99 is founded on. What happens is, it's not that when somebody 00:09:50.02\00:09:54.11 disagrees with me in some cases that they don't have scriptures, 00:09:54.14\00:09:58.04 but they won't talk about the particular scriptures that are 00:09:58.07\00:10:01.60 speaking to for example, And Jesus as his custom was went 00:10:01.63\00:10:04.37 into the synagogue on the Sabbath day for to preach. 00:10:04.41\00:10:07.07 It was his custom. Luke chapter 4. Well what about this text 00:10:07.11\00:10:10.14 over here, no not that text over there. What about the one here 00:10:10.18\00:10:15.31 that says thus and so. So there needs to be an honest desire on 00:10:15.35\00:10:20.65 the part of each one of us to know God's truth even at the 00:10:20.68\00:10:25.64 cost of perhaps having to learn something new or different. 00:10:25.67\00:10:30.85 Yeah. You know any doctrine in the Bible has passages that 00:10:30.89\00:10:34.70 could be confusing and seem to be saying something different 00:10:34.73\00:10:38.50 from what the weight of scripture might be saying. 00:10:38.54\00:10:40.52 So it's possible to look at those passages that are a little 00:10:40.56\00:10:44.57 bit obscure and difficult and seem to be saying something a 00:10:44.60\00:10:48.14 little bit contrary and to use that as your support and not 00:10:48.18\00:10:51.65 feel the burden to have to go to those other passages that are so 00:10:51.69\00:10:55.01 clear in the weight of scripture and to try to explain those. 00:10:55.04\00:10:59.12 Instead you just continually point to the same scriptures 00:10:59.15\00:11:03.02 that support your view and that is an issue where we have to 00:11:03.05\00:11:06.88 look at the honesty of our own heart. 00:11:06.92\00:11:08.37 Yeah and when it comes down to it, when we find ourselves 00:11:08.40\00:11:12.40 wanting to stir up the people, we're getting angry and so we 00:11:12.44\00:11:15.71 want to get all the people that think like us and stir them up 00:11:15.75\00:11:18.47 instead of investigate, then we know that we've got the wrong 00:11:18.50\00:11:21.19 spirit. Because that's what we're seeing here. They want 00:11:21.23\00:11:24.91 to poison the people's minds against the apostles instead of 00:11:24.94\00:11:28.44 studying out the teachings that are being presented. So we see 00:11:28.47\00:11:32.30 this stirring up and it results in them actually planning to 00:11:32.33\00:11:35.96 abuse and stone them. So when they became aware of it they 00:11:35.99\00:11:39.67 fled to another location. And of course, despite the fact 00:11:39.70\00:11:43.31 that they just ran into this issue of a potential stoning 00:11:43.34\00:11:46.88 and there's this plot. In verse 7 it says, And they were 00:11:46.92\00:11:50.32 preaching the gospel there. The same thing that got them in 00:11:50.36\00:11:53.78 trouble, the same thing that this plot was created because of 00:11:53.82\00:11:57.78 it, they are not deterred at all. Then it says in verse 8, 00:11:57.81\00:12:01.63 And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was 00:12:01.66\00:12:05.75 sitting, a cripple from his mother's womb, who had never 00:12:05.78\00:12:10.02 walked. Now we have seen something like this before. Back 00:12:10.06\00:12:14.05 in Acts chapter 3 we will recall that Peter and John when they 00:12:14.09\00:12:17.66 went to the temple to pray they healed the lame man there at the 00:12:17.69\00:12:22.39 temple gate. That lame man was also lame since his mother's 00:12:22.42\00:12:26.92 womb. Now in verse 9 it says, This man heard Paul speaking and 00:12:26.95\00:12:31.35 Paul observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be 00:12:31.38\00:12:35.71 healed, said with a loud voice, Stand up straight on your feet, 00:12:35.74\00:12:39.52 and he leaped and walked, which sounds similar to Acts chapter 3 00:12:39.55\00:12:43.24 as well. Now when the people saw what Paul had done they raised 00:12:43.27\00:12:46.92 their voices saying in the Lycaonian language, The gods 00:12:46.95\00:12:50.60 have come down to us in the likeness of men! And Barnabas 00:12:50.64\00:12:54.21 they called Zeus and Paul Hermes because he was the chief speaker 00:12:54.25\00:12:59.19 Then the priest of Zeus whose temple was in front of their 00:12:59.22\00:13:02.76 city brought oxen and garlands to the gates intending to 00:13:02.80\00:13:06.08 sacrifice with the multitudes. This is an incredible story. 00:13:06.12\00:13:09.56 You know when the healing happened in Acts chapter 3 it 00:13:09.59\00:13:12.97 was primarily Jews, at least a lot more believing Jews in that 00:13:13.00\00:13:17.12 area. Here we're seeing healing that happens around those who 00:13:17.16\00:13:20.55 have a pagan background and the response is a lot different. 00:13:20.59\00:13:23.95 These must be gods. There's a lot in this story... 00:13:23.98\00:13:28.46 It's not the great power of God, it's the great power of the gods 00:13:28.50\00:13:30.17 Right exactly. So there's a lot in this story and we need to 00:13:30.20\00:13:33.86 dig a little bit deeper. But right now we need to go to our 00:13:33.89\00:13:37.22 break. So stay tuned and we'll be back with you in just a few 00:13:37.26\00:13:40.55 minutes on Books of the Book. 00:13:40.58\00:13:42.25
