Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.74 We are in the book of Acts chapter 13 and we had just 00:00:02.77\00:00:05.19 studied right before the break, Jim, we were talking about 00:00:05.23\00:00:08.96 Elymas the sorcerer and how the Lord through the Apostle Paul 00:00:09.00\00:00:14.06 had shown Sergius Paulus that he was with Paul and his power 00:00:14.10\00:00:18.74 was with Paul and kind of confounded, more than confounded 00:00:18.77\00:00:23.10 Elymas the sorcerer as Paul pronounced a blindness on him. 00:00:23.13\00:00:27.73 Of course, it says the proconsul believed as a result of that. 00:00:27.77\00:00:32.16 Now we're moving on into verse 13 and verses 13-15 are kind of 00:00:32.19\00:00:36.11 transitional here. It tells us in verse 13 that Paul and his 00:00:36.14\00:00:40.29 party set sail from Paphos and then they came to Perga and 00:00:40.32\00:00:44.05 Pamphylia and John, this is John Mark, departing from them 00:00:44.09\00:00:47.19 returned to Jerusalem. Now we're going to see that later on I 00:00:47.23\00:00:50.50 believe this caused a little contention with the departure 00:00:50.53\00:00:53.64 of John. Now in verse 14 it says They departed from Perga and 00:00:53.68\00:00:56.59 came to Antioch in Pisidia. This is not the Antioch where they 00:00:56.62\00:01:00.02 moved headquarters to, but this is another Antioch, Pisidian 00:01:00.05\00:01:03.42 Antioch, where they went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day 00:01:03.45\00:01:06.78 and sat down. And after the reading of the law and the 00:01:06.82\00:01:09.46 prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent to them saying, 00:01:09.49\00:01:12.26 Men and brethren if you have any word of exhortation for the 00:01:12.30\00:01:15.04 people say on. Now it was customary in those times that 00:01:15.07\00:01:18.51 the ruler of the synagogue or the leader could appoint whoever 00:01:18.55\00:01:22.81 he wanted to for the service and it seems here that there perhaps 00:01:22.84\00:01:27.07 was knowledge of Paul's rabbinical and not knowledge of 00:01:27.10\00:01:30.55 Paul's defense of Christianity. So, hey, here's a guy who has 00:01:30.59\00:01:34.47 rabbinical training. Maybe he has something to say today and 00:01:34.50\00:01:38.35 could lead out and so they invited him to speak and you 00:01:38.38\00:01:41.59 might want to pick up in verse 16 there and tell us what 00:01:41.62\00:01:44.80 happened when Paul was invited to speak. 00:01:44.83\00:01:47.33 Right. When we get to verse 16, Paul stands up. It says he 00:01:47.36\00:01:52.76 motions with his hand and he begins to recount similarly to 00:01:52.79\00:01:56.91 how Stephen recounted the history of Israel. He begins to 00:01:56.95\00:02:01.00 recount similarly and he talks about how God chose the fathers 00:02:01.03\00:02:06.29 and they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt and they were 00:02:06.32\00:02:11.07 in slavery there, but ultimately he rescued them out and they 00:02:11.11\00:02:14.73 were in the wilderness for a period and then he ultimately 00:02:14.77\00:02:18.24 gave them the land of Canaan. He goes on to talk about how 00:02:18.28\00:02:21.69 they had judges that ruled them and then finally the king, Saul 00:02:21.72\00:02:25.67 the king, and then after Saul he raised up David. And he's 00:02:25.70\00:02:29.81 trying to get to this point of David because from David comes 00:02:29.85\00:02:33.90 the lineage of the Messiah. He's trying to get to show the 00:02:33.93\00:02:38.55 progression to Christ. So he says in verse 22, And when he 00:02:38.58\00:02:42.56 had removed him he raised up for them David as king to whom 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.97 also he gave testimony and said I have found David the son of 00:02:46.01\00:02:49.67 Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will. Verse 00:02:49.70\00:02:53.33 23, From this man's seed according to the promise God 00:02:53.36\00:02:56.54 raised up for Israel a Savior, Jesus, after John has first 00:02:56.57\00:02:59.98 preached. He talks about John and how John said that he wasn't 00:03:00.01\00:03:04.07 the Savior. Then in verse 26 he says, Men and brethren, sons of 00:03:04.10\00:03:08.13 the family of Abraham, he emphasizes that they were sons 00:03:08.16\00:03:12.44 of this whole lineage that they just described, and those among 00:03:12.48\00:03:17.20 you who fear God to you the word of this salvation has been sent. 00:03:17.23\00:03:21.92 So notice he's telling an account but then he makes it 00:03:21.95\00:03:26.02 very personal and he's now saying this is a personal appeal 00:03:26.05\00:03:29.63 a personal invitation; to you the word of this salvation has 00:03:29.66\00:03:33.77 been sent. Verse 27, For those who dwell in Jerusalem and their 00:03:33.81\00:03:38.38 rulers because they did not know him, that's know Jesus, and he's 00:03:38.42\00:03:42.96 talking about those who dwell in Jerusalem and their rulers, 00:03:42.99\00:03:46.28 those who were involved in the crucifixion, because they didn't 00:03:46.31\00:03:49.91 know Jesus nor even the voices of the prophets. Of course, the 00:03:49.94\00:03:53.52 prophets had pointed to Jesus as the Messiah. Then it makes 00:03:53.56\00:03:56.53 this interesting statement, nor even the voices of the prophets 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.50 which are read every Sabbath have fulfilled them in 00:03:59.53\00:04:03.84 condemning him. Here's what he's saying, ultimately because they 00:04:03.87\00:04:07.68 did not know Jesus, they did not know what the prophets had 00:04:07.72\00:04:13.51 written about Jesus and because of that they brought about the 00:04:13.55\00:04:17.49 crucifixion. Well the prophets had pointed forward to that 00:04:17.52\00:04:20.86 crucifixion, so by ignoring the prophets they fulfilled that 00:04:20.90\00:04:24.20 prophecy. Well yeah and did not know isn't 00:04:24.23\00:04:26.30 weren't acquainted with. In other words, he's not saying 00:04:26.33\00:04:28.65 you did not know because you never heard. They heard every 00:04:28.68\00:04:30.97 Sabbath. Exactly right. And that's one of 00:04:31.00\00:04:32.86 the biggest points of this particular passage is that this 00:04:32.89\00:04:36.56 is something that they should have known. They were acquainted 00:04:36.60\00:04:40.31 with it. It had been read every Sabbath. You know I think about 00:04:40.34\00:04:44.46 how... it takes me back to the story of Peter when Peter denied 00:04:44.49\00:04:48.49 Christ. Remember that Christ told him beforehand that he was 00:04:48.52\00:04:52.31 going to do that. He said, I tell you Peter, you're going to 00:04:52.35\00:04:56.59 deny me three times and Peter said, Oh, I'll never deny you. 00:04:56.63\00:05:01.97 Even though Jesus told him that and Jesus was in the judgment 00:05:02.00\00:05:06.44 hall and Peter followed at a distance and there Peter was and 00:05:06.48\00:05:10.81 he was being asked, Are you with the Galilean. Oh no, oh no. You 00:05:10.85\00:05:15.15 would think maybe after the second time that Peter said no 00:05:15.18\00:05:18.14 that he would have gone, Oh I better not do this again, right. 00:05:18.17\00:05:21.13 He said three times. It just totally leaves his mind. 00:05:21.16\00:05:24.58 The pressures of his reputation and potential persecution are 00:05:24.61\00:05:28.64 too great and he goes right through and does exactly what 00:05:28.68\00:05:31.97 he was told he was going to do. It was a character issue. 00:05:32.00\00:05:35.64 It was a character issue and ultimately he denied Jesus that 00:05:35.67\00:05:39.86 third time. You know, there are some people who read prophecies 00:05:39.90\00:05:44.06 of Revelation and they see what's going to happen at the 00:05:44.09\00:05:46.42 end. We just looked previously at Revelation 13 how there will 00:05:46.46\00:05:51.02 be persecution. There will be it appears a compelling of people 00:05:51.05\00:05:55.77 to follow civil legislation or civil laws that are contrary to 00:05:55.81\00:05:59.61 the law of God. And so they say, Oh I see that that's going to 00:05:59.65\00:06:03.57 happen, I just won't do it. But just we know something is going 00:06:03.60\00:06:07.49 to happen doesn't mean that we'll have the character to 00:06:07.53\00:06:11.32 actually respond to it. Just because they heard these 00:06:11.35\00:06:15.08 prophecies every Sabbath didn't mean that they knew and 00:06:15.11\00:06:18.76 understood them, it didn't mean that they had accepted them or 00:06:18.80\00:06:22.08 searched them or taken them to heart. So we need to be very 00:06:22.12\00:06:25.87 clear that, you know what, we may hear things every Sabbath 00:06:25.90\00:06:29.59 we may be learning all the time and think that well we know what 00:06:29.62\00:06:33.20 we need to know but the reality is we could find ourselves just 00:06:33.24\00:06:36.79 as void of true knowledge as they were here. 00:06:36.82\00:06:39.15 Absolutely. And he emphasizes that point as he goes on. If we 00:06:39.18\00:06:44.32 look at verse 28 it says, And though they found no cause for 00:06:44.36\00:06:48.35 death in him they asked Pilate that he should be put to death. 00:06:48.39\00:06:51.95 Now when they, that is the religious leaders and the Jews, 00:06:51.99\00:06:55.78 had fulfilled all that was written concerning him they took 00:06:55.81\00:06:59.54 him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. So all the things 00:06:59.57\00:07:04.25 concerned, Paul is drawing attention to the prophecies of 00:07:04.29\00:07:07.37 Christ. You know David had said, They're going to shoot out the 00:07:07.41\00:07:10.55 lip at me, they're going to mock me, they're going to give me 00:07:10.58\00:07:16.02 gall to drink, they're going to tell me if he is the Son of God 00:07:16.05\00:07:20.20 then let him come down and save himself, or if God is in favor 00:07:20.24\00:07:24.49 of him let God save him. All of those things were fulfilled by 00:07:24.52\00:07:29.32 the religious leaders of the day even though they heard them in 00:07:29.36\00:07:34.12 the synagogue every Sabbath, they fulfilled them. Paul is 00:07:34.16\00:07:37.82 making a point and I think it's important for us to note again 00:07:37.86\00:07:40.34 that he keeps going back to scripture. It's not just his 00:07:40.38\00:07:43.72 experience but he is bringing them back to what has been 00:07:43.75\00:07:47.02 written in scripture and he goes on to say, But God, verse 30, 00:07:47.05\00:07:53.17 has raised him up from the dead Then he goes on to share some 00:07:53.21\00:07:59.29 other prophecies of the psalms that have been fulfilled. 00:07:59.33\00:08:03.35 I'd love to go through them but sake of time we're going to jump 00:08:03.39\00:08:07.00 ahead to verse 35. We're going to see something else here. 00:08:07.03\00:08:09.03 It says in verse 35 he says, It also says in another Psalm, you 00:08:09.07\00:08:12.97 will not allow your Holy One to see corruption... 00:08:13.00\00:08:15.10 We've already seen that in Acts chapter 2. 00:08:15.13\00:08:17.44 for David after he had served his own generation by the will 00:08:17.47\00:08:20.40 of God fell asleep and was buried with his fathers and saw 00:08:20.43\00:08:23.32 corruption. But he whom God raised up saw no corruption. 00:08:23.35\00:08:26.73 So he gives the same argument we saw that Peter gave and 00:08:26.77\00:08:30.35 confirming that Jesus is the Christ. Then he goes on to say 00:08:30.38\00:08:33.34 in verse 38, Therefore let it be known to you brethren that 00:08:33.38\00:08:36.71 through this man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins 00:08:36.74\00:08:40.21 and by him everyone who believes is justified from all things 00:08:40.25\00:08:44.62 from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. 00:08:44.65\00:08:48.40 Beware therefore lest what has come upon you in the prophets 00:08:48.44\00:08:51.80 or which has been spoken of in the prophets comes upon you. 00:08:51.84\00:08:55.17 And he quotes from Habakkuk where Habakkuk foretells 00:08:55.20\00:08:58.40 judgment. In essence he says that we have on every Sabbath 00:08:58.43\00:09:02.42 heard the prophecies pointing forward to what we have just 00:09:02.46\00:09:06.29 seen happen. Everything's been fulfilled just exactly as you 00:09:06.32\00:09:10.15 have learned it would be growing up if you just take a look at 00:09:10.19\00:09:13.99 these prophecies. And now here's this man Jesus who I'm 00:09:14.02\00:09:17.17 presenting to you. Salvation is through him, forgiveness of sins 00:09:18.17\00:09:21.41 is in him, he is able to justify us from the things that the law 00:09:21.44\00:09:24.64 could not justify us from, which is nothing. The law can't 00:09:24.68\00:09:27.61 justify, it was never given to justify. Justification was 00:09:27.65\00:09:30.91 always to be through the lamb that would come, Jesus Christ, 00:09:30.95\00:09:34.21 the Lamb of God. And Paul is urging them to accept the Son 00:09:34.24\00:09:37.94 of God as their salvation. Amen, amen. So now we're here 00:09:37.98\00:09:42.01 in verse 42 where we see the response that is given and it's 00:09:42.05\00:09:45.58 a fantastic response. It's the kind we like to get after a 00:09:45.62\00:09:49.00 sermon. It says in verse 42, So when the Jews went out of the 00:09:49.03\00:09:52.38 synagogue the gentiles begged that these words might be 00:09:52.42\00:09:55.15 preached to them the next Sabbath. They begged! That's 00:09:55.18\00:09:58.55 exactly right. And they took advantage of it. It says now 00:09:58.59\00:10:01.88 when the congregation had broken up many of the Jews and devout 00:10:01.92\00:10:04.93 proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, 00:10:04.97\00:10:08.37 persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. So they saw it 00:10:08.41\00:10:11.78 as their responsibility to persuade both Jews and Greeks. 00:10:11.81\00:10:15.66 You know, I think of the text where the Apostle Paul said 00:10:15.69\00:10:19.50 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord we persuade men. 00:10:19.53\00:10:23.27 There's a lot of people who feel well we'll just let the Holy 00:10:23.30\00:10:25.47 Spirit bring people to a decision. But they saw that 00:10:25.50\00:10:29.00 the Holy Spirit brings conviction but he uses us to... 00:10:29.04\00:10:32.50 When the Holy Spirit comes upon us we will be witnesses. 00:10:33.10\00:10:35.70 That's right. And in doing that he wants us to give clear reason 00:10:35.73\00:10:40.34 that will cause someone to be available for the Holy Spirit to 00:10:40.38\00:10:44.56 pierce their heart convince them of the truth. So then it says in 00:10:44.60\00:10:48.75 verse 44 something very interesting. On the next Sabbath 00:10:48.78\00:10:52.13 almost the whole city came together to hear the word of 00:10:52.17\00:10:54.78 God. Now we're going to pause here for just a moment and 00:10:54.81\00:10:58.37 notice that the Sabbath all through the book of Acts Paul 00:10:58.40\00:11:01.90 and the apostles are meeting on the Sabbath and it doesn't 00:11:01.94\00:11:05.79 matter if there are just Jews or if gentiles are involved and 00:11:05.83\00:11:09.39 they don't seem to try to meet on a different day. There's no 00:11:09.43\00:11:12.96 intimation of that. They just meet every Sabbath. 00:11:13.00\00:11:15.91 Yeah you figure that if people begged that they'd preach more 00:11:15.95\00:11:18.42 they'd say hey we've got meetings every day, we've got 00:11:18.46\00:11:20.53 meetings on the first day of the week, come over. But that 00:11:20.56\00:11:22.82 evidently wasn't the practice here. 00:11:22.86\00:11:24.31 Week after week they came on the Sabbath. So after this we see 00:11:24.34\00:11:27.78 the Jews saw the multitude and were filled with envy, which 00:11:27.82\00:11:31.83 we've seen before and ultimately the Apostle Paul said, Hey 00:11:31.87\00:11:35.97 because of what you've done and because of your rejection, I'm 00:11:36.00\00:11:40.20 taking this to the gentiles. As we might say the gentiles were 00:11:40.23\00:11:44.62 glad and the Jews were mad, and Paul and Barnabas shook the dust 00:11:44.65\00:11:49.00 off their feet. Wow! What a powerful story. Unfortunately 00:11:49.03\00:11:53.12 we're out of time for today but join us next time on 00:11:53.15\00:11:56.27 Books of the Book. 00:11:56.31\00:11:58.04
