Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.72\00:00:23.75 I'm Pastor Mark Howard and I'm here with my co-host, Jim, and 00:00:23.78\00:00:27.58 he is my brother by the way. We are studying the book of 00:00:27.62\00:00:31.58 Acts. It's been an exciting book with a lot of powerful growth in 00:00:31.61\00:00:37.74 the early church. So much so, Jim, that sometimes we're 00:00:37.78\00:00:41.29 tempted to look at it as some kind of enigma like this is a 00:00:41.32\00:00:44.72 puzzle how they grew and it's something that we can't have. 00:00:44.75\00:00:47.82 But I think one of the things we've discussed here is that the 00:00:47.86\00:00:50.71 book of Acts is the model for what God wants to see in the 00:00:50.74\00:00:53.56 church today and we have every opportunity and every 00:00:53.60\00:00:56.53 availability of God's power through the Holy Spirit to be 00:00:56.56\00:01:00.04 what the church of Acts was. So we're trying to gain and gather 00:01:00.07\00:01:04.39 lessons from this history of the early church that would help us 00:01:04.43\00:01:08.72 to be more effective as God's church in these last days. 00:01:08.75\00:01:13.60 Now our last time together we looked at Chapter 12 and how 00:01:13.63\00:01:18.05 Peter was miraculously freed from prison and the surrounding 00:01:18.09\00:01:22.47 events of that. We're moving into Chapter 13 now and 00:01:22.51\00:01:26.13 transitioning to the ministry of Paul and Barnabas or Saul and 00:01:26.16\00:01:29.66 Barnabas as it says here in the text. Before we go into the 00:01:29.70\00:01:33.13 scripture I want to begin with a word of prayer and so I'd invite 00:01:33.17\00:01:36.76 you to bow your heads with me. Father in heaven, I thank you 00:01:36.80\00:01:40.63 today for your mercies toward us. I thank you for this history 00:01:40.67\00:01:44.46 of how the Christian church began and I pray Lord that you 00:01:44.49\00:01:48.94 would move upon our hearts with a sense of responsibility that 00:01:48.98\00:01:53.54 we are to carry forward the work that was begun in such sacrifice 00:01:53.57\00:01:57.62 and commitment as we look back and see the early church. They 00:01:57.66\00:02:00.95 began a work that now has been entrusted to each one of us 00:02:00.99\00:02:04.25 including our viewers. Father I just pray that you would bless 00:02:04.28\00:02:07.93 us as we study and help us to know how better to apply these 00:02:07.97\00:02:12.08 things in our lives, personally and corporately as a church in 00:02:12.12\00:02:15.60 these last days. We ask and pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:02:15.64\00:02:19.05 Now we're going to turn to Acts Chapter 12, the very end of Acts 00:02:19.09\00:02:25.56 Chapter 12, verse 25. We're moving into Chapter 13. I hope 00:02:25.59\00:02:28.42 you have your Bibles with you. If not, you might want to grab 00:02:28.46\00:02:31.46 your Bible and follow along with us. We're going to Acts Chapter 00:02:31.49\00:02:35.00 12 verse 25. The Bible says here And Barnabas and Saul returned 00:02:35.04\00:02:38.51 from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their ministry and 00:02:38.55\00:02:42.70 they also took with them John whose surname was Mark. Now in 00:02:42.74\00:02:45.95 the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets. 00:02:45.99\00:02:49.23 I'm going to pause here and say that back in Acts Chapter 11, 00:02:49.26\00:02:53.51 Jim, we looked at the building up of the church of Antioch and 00:02:53.54\00:02:57.97 we saw that Barnabas was called to come to Antioch because he 00:02:58.01\00:03:01.78 he had heard what was going on there and he was so amazed at 00:03:01.82\00:03:05.57 what the lay people were doing in Antioch and he saw the need 00:03:05.61\00:03:09.26 for the apostolic leadership as well but he went and got Saul 00:03:09.30\00:03:12.67 and called him over and then they stayed for quite awhile 00:03:12.71\00:03:16.13 working with the church at Antioch and really establishing 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.63 it. What we see here is a transition taking place where 00:03:19.67\00:03:23.07 Antioch is becoming home base, headquarters, for the apostles. 00:03:23.10\00:03:27.12 So when they finished their ministries, it says here in 00:03:27.16\00:03:29.42 Jerusalem, they came back now not to Jerusalem, they came back 00:03:29.45\00:03:32.89 to Antioch. And it says that in the church in Antioch there were 00:03:32.93\00:03:36.61 certain prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called 00:03:36.64\00:03:40.39 Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought with Herod 00:03:40.43\00:03:44.14 the Tetrarch and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord and 00:03:44.18\00:03:47.93 fasted the Holy Spirit said, Now separate to me Barnabas and Saul 00:03:47.96\00:03:52.63 for the work to which I have called them. Then having fasted 00:03:52.66\00:03:56.55 and prayed and laid hands on them they sent them away. 00:03:56.58\00:04:00.44 So being sent out by the Holy Spirit they went down to 00:04:00.48\00:04:04.21 Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cypress. Now I want 00:04:04.24\00:04:07.36 to comment on a couple things here. One of the things that we 00:04:07.39\00:04:10.47 have looked at just briefly before is that when we study 00:04:10.51\00:04:13.54 in the Bible we come down to the end of the Bible to the book of 00:04:13.58\00:04:15.85 Revelation. Revelation shows us a picture of the history of 00:04:15.88\00:04:19.19 God's church in Revelation Chapter 12 and it brings us down 00:04:19.22\00:04:22.73 to the end of time and it points out some characteristics of 00:04:22.76\00:04:26.00 God's church at the end of time. It refers to them, at least in 00:04:26.03\00:04:29.23 the authorized version by the word remnant, in the newer 00:04:29.26\00:04:33.09 translations the rest. In other words, those who remained 00:04:33.12\00:04:36.87 faithful like the early church. It makes me think of the passage 00:04:36.91\00:04:40.45 where Jude tells us in the book right before Revelation that we 00:04:40.49\00:04:43.86 are to contend earnestly for the faith which was once delivered 00:04:43.90\00:04:46.86 to the saints. In other words, there is a pure faith and we are 00:04:46.89\00:04:49.60 always to contend for that pure faith. God says at the end of 00:04:49.64\00:04:52.03 time he's going to have a church with a pure faith. They're going 00:04:52.07\00:04:54.43 be the remnant, the rest, those who remain faithful. They're 00:04:54.46\00:04:57.71 going to be like the early church. Two of the 00:04:57.74\00:05:00.12 characteristics that are brought out, Jim, are that they keep 00:05:00.16\00:05:03.26 the commandments of God and that they have the testimony of Jesus 00:05:03.29\00:05:06.36 which a brief study will show is referring to the gift of 00:05:06.39\00:05:10.29 prophecy. You can look at Revelation 19:10 and 22:8,9 00:05:10.33\00:05:14.16 kind of gives that understanding Well, if we're going to find the 00:05:14.20\00:05:18.12 gift of prophecy active at the end of time you would expect 00:05:18.15\00:05:20.34 that it would have been active in the early church and what do 00:05:20.38\00:05:24.18 we see here but prophets and teachers. Sometimes, like for 00:05:24.21\00:05:27.94 example in verse 2 where it says the Holy Spirit said. We like to 00:05:27.97\00:05:31.69 get this idea that the Holy Spirit was directly speaking to 00:05:31.72\00:05:35.71 each individual and I think you mentioned this is a previous 00:05:35.74\00:05:39.45 episode that we really like the idea of God coming and talking 00:05:39.48\00:05:43.33 directly to us. We don't like as much the fact that God may talk 00:05:43.36\00:05:47.17 to us through some church leader. You know, who's he to 00:05:47.21\00:05:50.11 talk to me. I'll get my information from God myself. 00:05:50.15\00:05:52.98 You know, he'll speak to me directly if he's going to speak 00:05:53.02\00:05:55.51 to me. That's sometimes the attitude we have. 00:05:55.55\00:05:56.58 Because the church leaders have weaknesses and their own views 00:05:56.61\00:05:59.10 and it's harder to take counsel from them. 00:05:59.13\00:06:00.98 Absolutely. You know we're human beings and as much as a church 00:06:01.02\00:06:06.60 leader deserves respect there's still the human element. So we 00:06:06.63\00:06:12.18 read in the book of Acts and some people will say, Hey it 00:06:12.21\00:06:14.35 says the Holy Spirit said to them and that's how God worked 00:06:14.38\00:06:17.33 in the early church. But keep in mind the context. How did the 00:06:17.37\00:06:21.15 Holy Spirit say and who did the Holy Spirit say it to separate 00:06:21.18\00:06:25.17 to me Barnabas and Saul but the prophets. That's how God speaks 00:06:25.21\00:06:28.57 to prophets, directly through the Holy Spirit. But he doesn't 00:06:28.60\00:06:32.29 speak to everybody in the same way. Now sure his Spirit speaks 00:06:32.32\00:06:35.07 and guides us but let's remember that the Bible tells us that 00:06:35.11\00:06:38.54 the Bible tells us that there are gifts of the Spirit and the 00:06:38.57\00:06:41.53 Holy Spirit works through the gifts of the Spirit including 00:06:41.56\00:06:44.48 the gift of prophecy and the gift of pastors and teachers. 00:06:44.52\00:06:47.48 So the Holy Spirit chooses different avenues and we need 00:06:47.51\00:06:51.37 to be willing to work in the context of those avenues and so 00:06:51.40\00:06:54.85 the Holy Spirit said through these prophets, separate to me 00:06:54.88\00:06:59.16 Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them and 00:06:59.19\00:07:02.80 then having fasted and prayed and laid hands on them they 00:07:02.83\00:07:06.37 sent them away. This fasting and praying, we see this in another 00:07:06.40\00:07:12.52 place in the book of Acts. This is something that they did when 00:07:12.55\00:07:18.63 they were very focused and serious about what they were 00:07:18.67\00:07:20.53 about to do. And they sent them as missionaries. It really grabs 00:07:20.56\00:07:25.51 my attention that we don't read much more before this of... we 00:07:25.55\00:07:30.47 see Barnabas but Niger and Manean and these others, we 00:07:30.50\00:07:35.10 don't read a lot about them prior to this. In other words, 00:07:35.13\00:07:38.88 they don't seem to be people very prominent, but Saul is very 00:07:38.92\00:07:42.73 prominent. Who are they to tell Saul what to do. But we don't 00:07:42.76\00:07:46.54 see Saul saying anything like that. These leaders in the 00:07:46.57\00:07:49.85 church were spoken to by the Holy Spirit who said set them 00:07:49.88\00:07:53.08 apart and send them thus and so and Saul and Barnabas submitted 00:07:53.12\00:07:56.59 to that leadership. Once again we see a picture of organization 00:07:56.63\00:08:00.07 in the early church and how God is working through that 00:08:00.11\00:08:02.73 organization. That's right. So we have Saul 00:08:02.76\00:08:05.42 and Barnabas here being sent out on their first missionary 00:08:05.45\00:08:08.29 journey. I'd like to pick up in verse 5 after being sent out. 00:08:08.32\00:08:12.60 In verse 5 it says and when they arrived in Salamis they preached 00:08:12.63\00:08:16.88 the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. 00:08:16.91\00:08:19.11 They also had John as their assistant. This is John Mark 00:08:19.15\00:08:22.79 that you mentioned earlier. Verse 6 says now when they had 00:08:22.83\00:08:26.30 gone through the island to Paphos they found a certain 00:08:26.34\00:08:29.74 sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-jesus who was 00:08:29.77\00:08:34.57 with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.91 This man called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word 00:08:37.95\00:08:41.70 of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated), 00:08:41.74\00:08:45.47 Elymas would be the sorcerer that was spoken of earlier here, 00:08:45.51\00:08:49.35 withstood them seeking to turn the proconsul away from the 00:08:49.39\00:08:53.48 faith. Then Saul who is also called Paul, so now we're going 00:08:53.52\00:08:56.93 to see a transition. We're going to start seeing Saul frequently 00:08:56.97\00:09:00.35 called Paul here in the book of Acts. 00:09:00.38\00:09:01.97 So wait a minute. So you said Elymas is Bar-Jesus so we're 00:09:02.01\00:09:04.29 talking about the same character here. 00:09:04.32\00:09:05.50 That's right, that right. But Saul who is also called Paul, 00:09:05.53\00:09:09.33 filled with the Holy Spirit looked intently at him and said, 00:09:09.37\00:09:13.18 O full of all deceit and all fraud. You son of the devil, 00:09:13.22\00:09:16.65 you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting 00:09:16.69\00:09:19.86 the straight ways of the Lord and now indeed the hand of the 00:09:19.89\00:09:23.30 Lord is upon you and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for 00:09:23.33\00:09:26.80 a time. And immediately a dark mist fell on him and he went 00:09:26.83\00:09:30.09 around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. Then the 00:09:30.13\00:09:33.47 proconsul believed when he saw what had been done, being 00:09:33.50\00:09:36.74 astonished at the teaching of the Lord. This is a pretty 00:09:36.78\00:09:39.98 interesting story. Yeah. I've never addressed 00:09:40.01\00:09:42.74 anybody like that no matter how cantankerous they were. 00:09:42.78\00:09:45.64 That's right. The apostle Paul was pretty bold here and fitting 00:09:45.67\00:09:49.34 with the rest of the apostles here in the book of Acts. 00:09:49.37\00:09:52.05 But what's fascinating about this story is that we have this 00:09:52.09\00:09:55.68 sorcerer, Elymas, who has somehow become connected with 00:09:55.72\00:10:01.42 this proconsul or governor and so he is there as Saul and 00:10:01.46\00:10:07.09 Barnabas are sharing the word of God and he's trying to withstand 00:10:07.13\00:10:11.16 them. Now this could be pretty influential because seeing that 00:10:11.20\00:10:15.20 he was a sorcerer and was connected, that means that 00:10:15.24\00:10:18.22 somehow he had shown attributes of special supernatural ability 00:10:18.25\00:10:22.76 or he was able to accomplish things that were above what 00:10:22.79\00:10:27.23 would be humanly possible and so when he withstood that 00:10:27.26\00:10:31.62 probably caused the proconsul to question, wait a minute, is this 00:10:31.66\00:10:36.15 really of God. It makes sense what Saul and Barnabas are 00:10:36.19\00:10:38.88 saying but is this really true? 00:10:38.91\00:10:40.67 Because Elymas had had his confidence. 00:10:40.71\00:10:42.77 That exactly right, and he gained that confidence through 00:10:42.81\00:10:45.57 that supernatural ability. We need to be really careful about 00:10:45.61\00:10:48.82 that. Supernatural ability does not necessarily mean that 00:10:48.85\00:10:51.55 something is of God. We've mentioned that before. It's a 00:10:51.59\00:10:54.22 common theme here in the book of Acts. But it makes me think of a 00:10:54.25\00:10:57.36 couple passages of scripture that we really need to take heed 00:10:57.40\00:11:00.89 to. One is in Matthew 24 and I'd like to look at that one. This 00:11:00.92\00:11:05.63 is Jesus speaking in Matthew 24 about the end of time and the 00:11:05.67\00:11:10.05 types of things we should look out for and in verse 24 he says, 00:11:10.09\00:11:14.43 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show 00:11:14.47\00:11:18.59 great signs and wonders, supernatural things, to do what? 00:11:18.63\00:11:22.76 To deceive, if possible, even the elect. So he says, hey, at 00:11:22.80\00:11:26.56 the end of time what's going to be used to deceive people is 00:11:26.60\00:11:30.35 supernatural powers and miracles signs and wonders. Then if you 00:11:30.38\00:11:34.10 look in Revelation Chapter 13 it speaks of this power that 00:11:34.14\00:11:39.36 causes people to worship the beast and receive the mark of 00:11:39.40\00:11:45.37 the beast and it says in verse 14 of Revelation 13, And he 00:11:45.41\00:11:50.74 deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he 00:11:50.78\00:11:54.91 was granted to do in the sight of the beast. So the deception 00:11:54.94\00:11:59.04 at the end of time will happen by signs and supernatural 00:11:59.07\00:12:01.75 miracles. That's the first point But secondly, we're thankful 00:12:01.78\00:12:06.20 that God has a supernatural power that always exceeds that 00:12:06.24\00:12:10.29 of the devil and those that he instigates. There are certain 00:12:10.33\00:12:15.15 things that God allows, but he can always conquer or give more 00:12:15.19\00:12:19.98 than what we see here in Acts or in any situation of 00:12:20.02\00:12:23.82 supernatural powers. So in light of that I think we need to look 00:12:23.85\00:12:28.19 just briefly at the book of Exodus Chapter 7. In Exodus 00:12:28.22\00:12:31.85 Chapter 7 we have a fantastic story in which Moses is called 00:12:31.89\00:12:37.16 to go before Pharaoh to begin setting the people of Israel 00:12:37.19\00:12:41.98 free from slavery and bondage. So Aaron is instructed, Moses' 00:12:42.01\00:12:47.13 brother to cast his rod down in front of Pharaoh to show that 00:12:47.17\00:12:52.80 he's sent of God and it says in Exodus 7 and verse 8, Then the 00:12:52.83\00:12:57.22 Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron saying, When Pharaoh speaks to 00:12:57.26\00:13:01.34 you saying show a miracle for yourselves then you shall say to 00:13:01.37\00:13:05.45 Aaron, Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh and let it become 00:13:05.48\00:13:09.08 a serpent. So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and they did 00:13:09.11\00:13:12.68 so just as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod 00:13:12.71\00:13:15.86 before Pharaoh and before his servants and it became a serpent 00:13:15.90\00:13:19.75 but Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers, Okay so 00:13:19.78\00:13:22.98 this is exactly what Elymas was in the book of Acts, a sorcerer. 00:13:23.01\00:13:27.07 So the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with 00:13:27.11\00:13:30.42 their enchantments. So they were able to create a serpent out of 00:13:30.46\00:13:34.08 a pole too, or rod or whatever it was. Verse 12, For every man 00:13:34.12\00:13:37.85 threw down his rod and they became serpents, but Aaron's rod 00:13:37.89\00:13:41.70 swallowed up their rods. So even though there was supernatural 00:13:41.74\00:13:45.52 power, at the end of the day God's power was greater. And 00:13:45.56\00:13:48.75 then you see the same thing happen as they went through the 00:13:48.78\00:13:51.94 10 plagues of Egypt. The magicians were able to copy 00:13:51.97\00:13:55.26 certain plagues, but then when they got to the plague of lice 00:13:55.29\00:13:57.98 they couldn't copy it and then finally when they got to the 00:13:58.02\00:14:00.67 plague of the boils they couldn't even stand before 00:14:00.70\00:14:02.50 Pharaoh because they were covered with boils and couldn't 00:14:02.54\00:14:05.46 do anything to remove them. So we need to remember that what 00:14:05.50\00:14:08.64 we see here is fitting to what we will see at the end of time 00:14:08.68\00:14:12.45 and that is that the power of God, even when we see the power 00:14:12.49\00:14:16.22 of the supernatural in the enemy, the power of God is 00:14:16.26\00:14:20.82 always greater. And it was because of Paul and his faith 00:14:20.86\00:14:25.66 in this particular, I don't want to call it a curse, that's 00:14:25.70\00:14:29.91 probably too strong a word, but it was certainly a punishment 00:14:29.95\00:14:34.08 that came upon Elymas when he said, Now the hand of the Lord 00:14:34.12\00:14:37.94 is upon you. You shall be blind. And this sorcerer who had 00:14:37.98\00:14:41.40 supernatural power was all of a sudden made to look very weak 00:14:41.43\00:14:45.87 and powerless before Paul and Barnabas. So that is what really 00:14:45.91\00:14:49.75 the proconsul looked at and when he saw that he said these words 00:14:49.78\00:14:53.91 that make such sense are of God because clearly the power of God 00:14:53.94\00:14:58.03 is in charge here. Yeah, absolutely. Well you know 00:14:58.06\00:15:01.94 the main point here is that while we know God can work 00:15:01.98\00:15:05.79 miracles and will work miracles in our day, the enemy also is 00:15:05.82\00:15:08.84 going to work miracles. So our safety will not be found in 00:15:08.87\00:15:11.89 looking for the miracles but looking at the message behind 00:15:11.93\00:15:14.92 the miracles. But we also don't need to be 00:15:14.95\00:15:16.93 afraid of the enemy's supernatural power because 00:15:16.97\00:15:19.58 God's is much greater. Absolutely. Well we need to go 00:15:19.62\00:15:21.97 to a break and I hope you stay tuned. We'll be back in just a 00:15:22.01\00:15:24.56 minute and talking more about the book of Acts. 00:15:24.60\00:15:26.80
