Welcome back to Books Of The Book. 00:00:01.47\00:00:02.84 Before the break, Mark, we were looking at Acts chapter 12 where 00:00:02.95\00:00:07.02 it said that Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass 00:00:07.05\00:00:09.61 some from the church, even going so far as killing James the 00:00:09.64\00:00:14.09 brother of John with the sword. 00:00:14.12\00:00:16.04 This was the first one of the apostles now who has met with 00:00:16.08\00:00:18.07 death in the new church. That's right. And in verse 3 00:00:18.10\00:00:22.00 something very interesting is brought out. It says, Because he 00:00:22.04\00:00:25.17 saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to cease Peter 00:00:25.21\00:00:30.43 also. So clearly the reason for this was not because of Peter 00:00:30.46\00:00:34.49 doing something wrong but for political reasons. He saw that 00:00:34.52\00:00:37.99 there was favor he was gaining with the Jews and wow if they 00:00:38.02\00:00:41.02 were happy about that well what will they do when we get the 00:00:41.05\00:00:44.58 great apostle Peter. So you continue and it says, Now it 00:00:44.62\00:00:47.81 was during the days of unleavened bread so there would 00:00:47.84\00:00:50.96 be many people around and it said in verse 4, So when he had 00:00:51.00\00:00:55.62 arrested him he put him in prison and delivered him to 00:00:55.65\00:00:58.80 four squads of soldiers to keep him intending to bring him 00:00:58.84\00:01:02.42 before the people after Passover Now four squads of soldiers 00:01:02.45\00:01:08.05 sounds like a lot of soldiers and so I believe that first of 00:01:08.09\00:01:12.69 God allowed it and secondly the Bible points it out because it's 00:01:12.73\00:01:16.68 going to show just how miraculous what is 00:01:16.72\00:01:19.39 about to happen is really going 00:01:19.43\00:01:20.65 to be. Now we get to verse 5 it says, Peter... 00:01:20.69\00:01:24.69 Why would they put four squads of soldiers on Peter anyway? 00:01:24.73\00:01:28.06 That's a very good question. You know we recognize that first of 00:01:28.10\00:01:32.65 all, remember when they put squads of soldiers around Jesus' 00:01:32.68\00:01:36.84 tomb that that didn't work out all that well for them, right? 00:01:36.87\00:01:40.85 We recognize that there are always supernatural experiences 00:01:40.88\00:01:44.28 that are going on in the book of Acts and I believe that they 00:01:44.31\00:01:47.84 knew that they needed to be especially careful and make sure 00:01:47.88\00:01:50.81 that Peter was kept bound. Well his last imprisonment... 00:01:50.84\00:01:53.70 It doesn't tell us what happened to the guards there. It's going 00:01:53.74\00:01:57.13 tell what happens to them here. But he had guards. It doesn't 00:01:57.17\00:02:00.49 tell us how many, but evidently they felt they needed to beef up 00:02:00.52\00:02:03.81 security. Because he showed up in the 00:02:03.84\00:02:05.42 temple that time. Yeah, and the guards had no idea 00:02:05.46\00:02:08.28 They opened the door and he was gone. 00:02:08.31\00:02:09.53 That's exactly right. So as we read verse 5 it says, Peter was 00:02:09.57\00:02:13.33 therefore kept in prison but constant prayer was offered to 00:02:13.36\00:02:17.71 God for him by the church. Now this is a valid and important 00:02:17.75\00:02:21.59 point that we need to stop and pause at. You know, oftentimes 00:02:21.63\00:02:25.76 we hear about things going on that are important and we know 00:02:25.79\00:02:29.66 they're important, but we fail to pray. We fail to take them 00:02:29.70\00:02:34.25 before the Lord. I believe that there are times when we fail 00:02:34.29\00:02:38.10 to bring something before the Lord and as a result the Lord 00:02:38.13\00:02:42.37 does not respond. If we don't have in our hearts the desire 00:02:42.41\00:02:46.58 for the will of the Lord and the outcome that would be glorifying 00:02:46.62\00:02:51.72 to God, then he may not bring it about. He's looking for us to 00:02:51.76\00:02:56.83 show a deep and abiding interest. I think about when we 00:02:56.86\00:02:59.23 do outreach projects for the church and yet we don't stop and 00:02:59.27\00:03:02.89 take time to pray. You know, if we're not going to plead with 00:03:02.92\00:03:06.51 the Lord, if we're not interested enough then he's not 00:03:06.54\00:03:10.28 going to be able to open the door of blessing to us and we're 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.90 not going to be able to recognize it. So this is a 00:03:13.93\00:03:17.40 pattern for us. These early believers were in constant 00:03:17.43\00:03:20.83 prayer and they were offering it to God for Peter because of 00:03:20.87\00:03:25.46 his imprisonment. That's right and you know, Jim, 00:03:25.49\00:03:27.71 it reminds me of a statement in a book you had made reference 00:03:27.75\00:03:30.50 to before called the Great Controversy that talks about the 00:03:30.53\00:03:33.75 history of the church and the author of that book makes a 00:03:33.78\00:03:37.04 statement that says, and I believe it's on page 525 of that 00:03:37.08\00:03:41.05 book, that says that it is part of God's plan to grant us in 00:03:41.09\00:03:45.41 answer to the prayer of faith, that which he would not bestow 00:03:45.44\00:03:49.72 if we did not thus ask. And we see that in different places in 00:03:49.76\00:03:55.40 scripture where when the church prays we find a response. It's 00:03:55.44\00:04:00.13 Jesus who said, Ask and it shall be given unto you. It's James 00:04:00.16\00:04:04.90 who tells us later on, you have not because you ask not. So we 00:04:04.93\00:04:09.64 go on here. The church is praying and the Bible tells us 00:04:09.67\00:04:13.04 in verse 6, When Herod was about to bring him out that night 00:04:13.07\00:04:16.92 Peter was sleeping bound with two chains between two soldiers 00:04:16.96\00:04:20.83 and the guards before the door were keeping the prison. Now I'm 00:04:20.86\00:04:24.40 just blown away by this for a couple reasons. First of all, 00:04:24.44\00:04:28.76 James was just killed, so that tells Peter that there are no 00:04:28.79\00:04:32.71 idle threats here. This is a real and genuine threat. He is 00:04:32.74\00:04:37.22 in the prison very likely to be killed in his own mind and what 00:04:37.26\00:04:41.84 is he doing? He's sleeping and he's not just sleeping lightly 00:04:41.87\00:04:46.42 as we're going to see in a moment. Furthermore he's got 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.95 four squads of soldiers. A squad it says in my marginal reading 00:04:49.99\00:04:53.61 says tetraz, there's four, so there are 16 soldiers. I don't 00:04:53.64\00:04:56.94 know if that includes the guards he's chained between. So before 00:04:56.98\00:05:00.25 there were guards at the door but now he's got a guard and 00:05:00.28\00:05:03.62 he's chained on either side so he can't move without somebody 00:05:04.06\00:05:07.74 knowing it. He's asleep. I have a hard time sleeping when 00:05:07.78\00:05:10.93 I'm away from home in a hotel bed let alone chained to a 00:05:10.96\00:05:14.08 couple of guys. Exactly. Here we have, it says 00:05:14.11\00:05:19.35 in verse 7, Now behold an angel of the Lord stood by him and a 00:05:19.39\00:05:24.19 light shown in the prison and he struck Peter on the side and 00:05:24.23\00:05:28.11 raised him up saying, Arise quickly. And his chains fell off 00:05:28.14\00:05:31.79 his hands. Then the angle said to him, Gird yourself and tie on 00:05:31.83\00:05:35.45 your sandals and so he did. And he said to him put on your 00:05:35.48\00:05:38.27 garment and follow me. Now he struck Peter so it wasn't like 00:05:38.31\00:05:41.31 tap, tap, tap like Peter was lightly sleeping, he couldn't 00:05:41.34\00:05:44.27 sleep well. He was sound asleep. That's how much trust he had in 00:05:44.31\00:05:48.40 the Lord. Hey, if death is where I've got to go now I'm trusting 00:05:48.43\00:05:51.93 everything in the hand of my Savior. Now it's just powerful. 00:05:51.96\00:05:55.83 But the angel strikes him on the side and tells him to get 00:05:55.87\00:06:00.84 dressed and then the Bible says, verse 9, Peter went out and 00:06:00.87\00:06:06.34 followed him and did not know that what was done by the angel 00:06:06.37\00:06:11.14 was real but thought he was seeing a vision. It says, When 00:06:11.18\00:06:17.20 they were past the first and the second guard posts, they 00:06:17.23\00:06:23.18 came to the iron gate that leads to the city which opened to them 00:06:23.22\00:06:27.43 of its own accord and they went out and went down one street, 00:06:27.46\00:06:31.39 and immediately the angel departed from him. Now the whole 00:06:31.42\00:06:35.39 account, I don't know if it happened noiselessly for Peter, 00:06:35.42\00:06:38.79 if he heard clanging or whatever but the bottom line is nobody 00:06:38.82\00:06:42.13 woke up. The squads of soldiers didn't wake up, they went by the 00:06:42.17\00:06:45.44 guard posts and nobody's at attention and the angel escorts 00:06:45.47\00:06:47.84 him out and the Bible says in verse 11, now when Peter had 00:06:47.87\00:06:50.46 come to himself he said, Now I know for certain that the Lord 00:06:50.49\00:06:53.05 has sent his angel and has delivered me from the hand of 00:06:53.08\00:06:56.18 Herod and from all the expectations of the Jewish 00:06:56.22\00:06:58.54 people. Oh what a powerful deliverance. A jail break, a 00:06:58.57\00:07:01.63 divine jail break. Right? That's exactly what it was. 00:07:01.66\00:07:04.65 You know, you look back at verse 11, it says, When Peter had come 00:07:04.69\00:07:08.76 to himself. I mean, this was so miraculous that he was having 00:07:08.79\00:07:12.83 a hard time believing it himself. I mean it says he 00:07:12.87\00:07:15.29 thought he was seeing a vision, this can't be happening and 00:07:15.32\00:07:17.73 finally he comes to himself and he's like no this is happening. 00:07:17.77\00:07:20.14 This is real. His surprise is shared by those that he now 00:07:20.18\00:07:27.88 comes to see. Because if you keep reading it says in verse 00:07:27.92\00:07:33.93 12, So when he had considered this he came to the house of 00:07:33.96\00:07:38.31 Mary the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many 00:07:38.34\00:07:42.62 were gathered together praying. There they are gathered together 00:07:42.65\00:07:46.34 praying. Which had a lot to do with his 00:07:46.38\00:07:48.26 deliverance. That's exactly right. And as 00:07:48.30\00:07:50.11 Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to 00:07:50.15\00:07:54.09 answer. When she recognized Peter's voice because of her 00:07:54.13\00:07:57.83 gladness she did not open the gate but ran in and announced 00:07:57.87\00:08:01.84 that Peter stood before the gate. This is a pretty funny 00:08:01.87\00:08:06.34 story. Rhoda comes to the gate and you know she hears Peter, 00:08:06.38\00:08:09.88 and hah it's Peter. Instead of opening to him, he's waiting 00:08:09.91\00:08:12.96 she flies back to talk and tell everybody else about it. But 00:08:13.00\00:08:15.85 he doesn't know what's going on. He's knocking, knocking, no 00:08:15.88\00:08:18.87 response. Makes me think of the woman at the well who left her 00:08:18.90\00:08:23.58 water pot and what grabs me here, Jim, is the joy that comes 00:08:23.61\00:08:28.25 through to God's blessings. God blessed them with this 00:08:28.28\00:08:31.23 deliverance of Peter and I don't think we do enough rejoicing 00:08:31.26\00:08:35.21 for the blessings of God. The woman at Jacob's well in John 4 00:08:35.25\00:08:38.58 left her water pot. She came there to draw water. She forgot 00:08:38.62\00:08:41.56 all about it and she went her way rejoicing and so we see here 00:08:41.60\00:08:44.50 with Rhoda. It reminds me of that song, Turn 00:08:44.54\00:08:46.76 your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face and the 00:08:46.79\00:08:50.00 things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.96 his glory and grace. The things of earth, whatever it is, 00:08:52.99\00:08:55.85 whatever common things they are when a revelation from God comes 00:08:55.88\00:08:59.86 everything else pales in significance. So we see here in 00:08:59.89\00:09:03.78 verse 14 it says that she recognized Peter's voice and she 00:09:03.82\00:09:07.06 ran in to announce that Peter stood before the gate and then 00:09:07.09\00:09:10.78 in verse 15, But they said to her, you are beside yourself 00:09:10.82\00:09:14.47 because they don't believe it either. 00:09:14.51\00:09:15.93 You're crazy. That's what they told the women who went to 00:09:15.97\00:09:19.69 find the body of Jesus and came back, He's risen? You guys are 00:09:19.72\00:09:22.22 crazy. No he isn't. That's right. 00:09:22.25\00:09:23.88 Exactly. We won't comment on what that 00:09:23.92\00:09:27.89 says about men and their faith sometimes. 00:09:27.92\00:09:31.82 Please don't. No, let's move on. It says, but they said to her, 00:09:31.86\00:09:35.40 You are beside yourself. Yet she kept insisting that it was so, 00:09:35.44\00:09:38.81 so they said, Well, it is his angel. So they're thinking well 00:09:38.85\00:09:42.57 it must be his angel. In verse 16, Now Peter continued knocking 00:09:42.60\00:09:46.52 like when are they going to open up? And when they opened the 00:09:46.55\00:09:50.44 door and saw him they were astonished, but motioning to 00:09:50.47\00:09:53.57 them with his hand to keep silent, he declared to them how 00:09:53.61\00:09:56.66 the Lord had brought him out of prison. So they're astonished 00:09:56.69\00:09:59.77 and they're all excited and he's like shh quiet because of course 00:09:59.80\00:10:03.78 there's still persecution going on here so he doesn't want to 00:10:03.81\00:10:07.75 broadcast the fact that he has been set free. So he gets 00:10:07.79\00:10:11.66 brought in and he begins to share with them the account of 00:10:11.70\00:10:15.54 what happened. Yeah, powerful. And then 00:10:15.58\00:10:18.40 apparently he gives them word to go on and tell the apostles 00:10:18.44\00:10:21.92 who aren't there, the leaders of the church, and he moves on 00:10:21.96\00:10:25.22 to another place. I mean, he doesn't to recoup somewhere 00:10:25.26\00:10:27.67 he doesn't say look I'm going to take a vacation after that. 00:10:27.70\00:10:30.78 My life was threatened, I don't know what to do. He's back out 00:10:30.82\00:10:33.86 preaching the word. That's exactly right. 00:10:33.90\00:10:35.69 It's powerful. He's moving from place to place, Lydia, Joppa and 00:10:35.72\00:10:39.94 just moving right along. Wherever God tells him to go. 00:10:39.98\00:10:42.41 Now we come to verse 19. It says When Herod had searched for him 00:10:42.44\00:10:46.29 and had not found him, he examined the guards and 00:10:46.32\00:10:48.84 commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down 00:10:48.87\00:10:52.80 from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. Now Herod had been 00:10:52.83\00:10:56.58 very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon but they came to 00:10:56.61\00:11:00.13 him with one accord and having made Blastus the king's personal 00:11:00.17\00:11:04.00 aide their friend the asked for peace because their country was 00:11:04.04\00:11:08.33 supplied with food by the King's country. So on a set day, Herod, 00:11:08.36\00:11:12.84 arrayed in royal apparel sat on his throne and gave an oration 00:11:12.88\00:11:16.57 to them and the people kept shouting the voice of a god and 00:11:16.61\00:11:20.36 not of a man. Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him 00:11:20.39\00:11:24.03 because he did not give glory to God and he was eaten by worms 00:11:24.07\00:11:28.96 and died. I don't know if this means that was a progressive 00:11:28.99\00:11:32.93 disease or what but here's the thing that really grabs me. 00:11:32.97\00:11:36.84 An angel of the Lord struck him. Well it was just earlier in the 00:11:36.88\00:11:40.94 chapter that an angel of the Lord struck Peter. But when he 00:11:40.98\00:11:44.20 struck Peter, Peter was awakened and delivered. When Herod is 00:11:44.24\00:11:47.89 struck by the angel he dies. It goes to show us if an angel 00:11:47.92\00:11:52.02 of the Lord, the angels of God, carry out God's will and God's 00:11:52.06\00:11:55.82 will is ultimately that all men would be saved, but men respond 00:11:55.86\00:11:59.48 to God in different ways. Herod has his day of opportunity but 00:11:59.51\00:12:03.10 Herod had turned his heart against God and he finally met 00:12:03.14\00:12:06.33 with judgment. That's right, that's right. Well 00:12:06.37\00:12:09.30 you keep reading. There's a couple more verses here but one 00:12:09.34\00:12:12.85 more specifically that we'd like to look at today and that's 00:12:12.88\00:12:17.05 verse 24. It says, but the word of God grew and multiplied. 00:12:17.08\00:12:21.21 You know, we've heard that before haven't we? 00:12:21.24\00:12:23.79 That's right. It seems to be a keynote here in Acts. 00:12:23.83\00:12:26.02 It's incredible as you read the book of Acts that you have so 00:12:26.05\00:12:30.60 much activity; it is hard to keep up with the book of Acts. 00:12:30.64\00:12:35.47 The thing is they trying to squelch this faith, to put it 00:12:35.50\00:12:40.04 out and they're multiplying. Yeah. They can't stop them. 00:12:40.07\00:12:44.54 You know, in the beginning it talked about how there were 3000 00:12:44.57\00:12:48.44 added in a day, then the number grew to 5000 and continually 00:12:48.47\00:12:52.31 the Lord multiplied them and the word was multiplied, etc. 00:12:52.35\00:12:56.60 Sometimes I look at what happens in our own experiences and I 00:12:56.63\00:13:01.19 think, you know what, we're too satisfied with small successes 00:13:01.23\00:13:05.31 when God wants to do so much more. We need to attempt bigger 00:13:05.34\00:13:09.56 things for God. How about you viewer. We're so thankful that 00:13:09.59\00:13:13.24 you've joined us today but we ask that you would consider 00:13:13.27\00:13:16.88 attempting better things for God. We'll see you next time. 00:13:16.91\00:13:20.48
