Welcome back to Books of the Book 00:00:22.39\00:00:23.42 I'm Pastor Mark Howard and I am here with my co-host, my brother 00:00:23.45\00:00:26.78 Jim. We have just been having a great time going through the 00:00:26.81\00:00:31.11 book of Acts. Today we are in the 11th chapter of the book of 00:00:31.15\00:00:34.77 Acts where we were studying a little bit last time and we'll 00:00:34.80\00:00:39.05 recap a little bit of that after a word of prayer. Let's ask God 00:00:39.08\00:00:43.29 to bless our time in study. Heavenly Father, we thank you 00:00:43.33\00:00:47.13 for your word and we ask now that the Holy Spirit would guide 00:00:47.17\00:00:50.61 our minds and our understanding as well as our hearts Father. 00:00:50.65\00:00:53.69 Help us to be willing to receive what it is you have for us today 00:00:53.72\00:00:56.73 in your word. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:00:56.77\00:00:59.01 Now, Jim, last time you recall we were talking about the 00:00:59.05\00:01:03.59 conversion of the household of Cornelius, which in and of 00:01:03.63\00:01:08.10 itself is a miraculous thing. It wasn't just Cornelius, but his 00:01:08.13\00:01:12.12 household. That tells us the kind of person he was that just 00:01:12.15\00:01:15.70 like Abraham led his household after himself, here Cornelius 00:01:15.74\00:01:19.44 is a man who has that impact over his home, that influence, 00:01:19.47\00:01:23.06 and uses his influence for the Lord and so should we in every 00:01:23.09\00:01:26.01 one of our homes. Our homes should be reflective of the will 00:01:26.05\00:01:30.21 of God. Now toward the end of that story we find that Peter, 00:01:30.24\00:01:34.37 after Cornelius and his household are baptized and you 00:01:34.40\00:01:36.69 would expect that the people would be excited, when Peter 00:01:36.73\00:01:40.65 tells the other brethren they are upset with him that he has 00:01:40.69\00:01:44.57 gone to the gentiles until Peter recounts the whole story of how 00:01:44.61\00:01:48.56 God led that experience and he says and we read this last time, 00:01:48.60\00:01:53.31 and we're going to read it again in chapter 11 verse 15. Peter 00:01:53.34\00:01:57.82 says, As I began to speak the Holy Spirit fell upon them as 00:01:57.86\00:02:03.24 upon us at the beginning. And then he says in verse 18, verse 00:02:03.28\00:02:08.25 17 rather, If therefore God gave them the same gift as he gave us 00:02:08.28\00:02:13.22 when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I 00:02:13.25\00:02:17.15 could withstand God? Now this was a powerful evidence to the 00:02:17.19\00:02:21.05 church there and to Peter himself. If we saw the same 00:02:21.09\00:02:25.19 experience with the Holy Spirit come upon them as came upon us 00:02:25.22\00:02:30.35 then who am I to forbid it. Now the danger here, Jim, is that 00:02:30.38\00:02:34.45 sometimes we can look at these things and some people will come 00:02:34.48\00:02:38.13 away with the idea that well it really doesn't matter what the 00:02:38.17\00:02:41.78 Bible teaches. If I have something in my experience that 00:02:41.82\00:02:44.52 seems to say different and we use a verse like this sometimes 00:02:44.55\00:02:48.41 and we'll say will that's what Peter is saying. He had an 00:02:48.44\00:02:51.60 experience that went contrary to the way he thought and 00:02:51.64\00:02:54.73 because of that experience he said, Hey, who I am to disagree? 00:02:54.77\00:03:00.05 It was more than just an experience. 00:03:00.08\00:03:02.10 That's right. I can think of people that I've studied with 00:03:02.13\00:03:05.40 who have been part of a body of believers who come to an 00:03:05.44\00:03:09.15 understanding, don't really believe everything truthfully 00:03:09.18\00:03:13.24 as the Bible teaches it, but because of the experiences that 00:03:13.27\00:03:17.29 happen there, and there could be all sorts of different 00:03:17.33\00:03:20.97 experiences. It could just be attendance, there's so many 00:03:21.00\00:03:24.93 people coming and worshiping God and from our appearance in a 00:03:24.96\00:03:28.85 subjective sense it looks like the Spirit is blessing. 00:03:28.89\00:03:31.54 Yeah, so many people are doing this. How could it be wrong? 00:03:31.58\00:03:33.89 Right. But I think it's important that we recognize 00:03:33.93\00:03:36.33 and we tried to do this at the end of last time but we need 00:03:36.37\00:03:40.37 to take a little bit more time this episode. You know when 00:03:40.40\00:03:45.46 Peter here is saying these things about what happened in 00:03:45.49\00:03:50.48 his experience, it's more than just the experience that gave 00:03:50.51\00:03:53.94 them the evidence that the gentiles would now be recipients 00:03:53.97\00:03:57.56 of the gospel. It was more than just a subjective wow we see 00:03:57.59\00:04:01.57 what the Spirit has done and now we know. Peter also received a 00:04:01.60\00:04:05.61 vision from God, prophetic inspiration, which is equivalent 00:04:05.65\00:04:09.60 to you and I seeing something in the word. So it's not just 00:04:09.63\00:04:13.55 experience, which can be subjective, but it's also 00:04:13.58\00:04:16.94 experience that is compatible with or affirms what we know 00:04:16.98\00:04:21.77 from inspired writings, inspiration through the prophets 00:04:21.80\00:04:26.52 Right and the gospel going to the gentiles was not foreign to 00:04:26.55\00:04:29.72 scripture. The Old Testament scriptures taught in many places 00:04:29.76\00:04:33.15 that the gospel would go to the gentile nations, Isaiah 56 is 00:04:33.18\00:04:36.55 one that comes to my mind but there are others. So there was 00:04:36.58\00:04:40.16 more than just that experience. I think to myself, Jim, of a 00:04:40.19\00:04:44.87 passage in Revelation chapter 13 where the Bible says something 00:04:44.91\00:04:48.99 that really ought to grab our attention and I'm actually going 00:04:49.03\00:04:53.81 to turn there to Revelation 13 and verse 13. The Bible tells us 00:04:53.85\00:04:58.57 about a collaboration between some powers at the end of time 00:04:58.60\00:05:02.96 that are working to deceive and it tells in Revelation 13:13, He 00:05:02.99\00:05:07.41 performs great signs so that he even makes fire come down from 00:05:07.45\00:05:11.84 heaven on earth in the sight of men. Now what's really 00:05:11.87\00:05:16.31 interesting and important about that is the fire coming down 00:05:16.34\00:05:19.25 from heaven was something we find in the Old Testament in the 00:05:19.28\00:05:23.62 book of I Kings chapter 18 that God used as an evidence of his 00:05:23.65\00:05:27.09 power in the ministry of the prophet Elijah. So God used it 00:05:27.13\00:05:31.17 as a sign of his power. But what the Bible tells is that the 00:05:31.20\00:05:34.61 enemy of righteousness is going to use it as a sign of his power 00:05:34.64\00:05:37.40 at the end of time. So people are going to see the fire come 00:05:37.43\00:05:40.15 down and say well wow we saw this elsewhere and this is the 00:05:40.18\00:05:43.57 evidence that this is from God. So those signs or miracles are 00:05:43.61\00:05:46.97 not... we can't base our confidence in that alone. 00:05:47.00\00:05:51.37 We have to have the scripture and inspired testimony to 00:05:51.40\00:05:55.50 accompany those miracles and those signs. 00:05:55.54\00:05:57.39 That's right and we see that here in the early church in a 00:05:57.42\00:05:59.77 number of places. Now we're in Acts chapter 11 and we're 00:05:59.80\00:06:02.08 picking up in verse 19. In fact, verse 19 picks up something we 00:06:02.11\00:06:06.21 have seen earlier. It tells us in verse 19, Now those who were 00:06:06.24\00:06:10.44 scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled 00:06:10.47\00:06:14.53 as far as Phoenicia, Cypress and Antioch, preaching the word to 00:06:14.56\00:06:18.17 none but the Jews only. Now there's a couple of things here 00:06:18.21\00:06:21.61 to note. First of all, we've talked in our last episode for 00:06:21.64\00:06:24.82 example, how the gospel had shifted its emphasis toward the 00:06:24.86\00:06:28.30 gentiles. But here it says they are preaching to the Jews only. 00:06:28.33\00:06:31.45 Now we've got to keep in mind that this group, and it spells 00:06:31.48\00:06:34.67 them out; they are those who are scattered after the stoning 00:06:34.70\00:06:37.85 of Stephen. Well that was in Acts chapter 8 verses 1-8, 00:06:37.89\00:06:42.07 rather verses 1-4, those were the ones that were everyone 00:06:42.10\00:06:45.87 except the apostles. These were the lay people, the church 00:06:45.91\00:06:49.45 members, who were scattered abroad and they were preaching 00:06:49.49\00:06:52.97 the word. Why are they preaching to the Jews only? Because we've 00:06:53.00\00:06:57.17 seen where several events have happened that have communicated 00:06:57.21\00:07:00.67 to the church the gospel to the gentiles, but that message has 00:07:00.70\00:07:04.12 not spread everywhere yet including this group here. 00:07:04.16\00:07:07.33 Now it goes on to tell us in verse 20 that some of them were 00:07:07.36\00:07:11.57 men from Cypress and Cyrene who when they had come to Antioch 00:07:11.60\00:07:15.77 spoke to the Hellenists preaching the Lord Jesus and 00:07:15.81\00:07:18.62 the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number believed 00:07:18.66\00:07:22.46 and turned to the Lord. Then the news of these things came to the 00:07:22.50\00:07:26.06 ears of the church in Jerusalem and they sent out Barnabas to go 00:07:26.10\00:07:30.10 as far as Antioch. Now we've seen this before too. The church 00:07:30.13\00:07:33.37 members are the ones who are doing this work. The church is 00:07:33.41\00:07:36.58 moving and growing powerfully under the work of the church 00:07:36.61\00:07:40.23 members so much so that news travels back to headquarters and 00:07:40.27\00:07:44.20 they send somebody to come and check out what's going on in the 00:07:44.24\00:07:48.14 church. That's right. And if we look 00:07:48.17\00:07:50.22 here in verse 22 after it says they sent out Barnabas, it says 00:07:50.25\00:07:54.16 a little bit about what happens. Verse 23: When he came and had 00:07:54.19\00:07:58.06 seen the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all 00:07:58.09\00:08:01.61 that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. 00:08:01.65\00:08:05.14 You know, we should be excited when we see the success of 00:08:05.17\00:08:09.04 others, rather than being jealous or competitive. I'm so 00:08:09.08\00:08:12.78 thankful for the large- heartedness of Barnabas to see 00:08:12.82\00:08:16.38 that I may not have been the one who did all this but I'm 00:08:16.41\00:08:19.94 encouraged, I'm excited about this. 00:08:19.97\00:08:22.00 Not only that, I'm going to roll up my sleeves and get in there 00:08:22.04\00:08:24.22 and work with them. You want to help them. That's 00:08:24.26\00:08:26.63 right. It says in verse 24, For he was a good man, full of the 00:08:26.67\00:08:30.39 Holy Spirit and of faith and a great many people were added 00:08:30.42\00:08:33.96 to the Lord. Then it says, Barnabas departed for Tarsus 00:08:33.99\00:08:37.58 to seek Saul, and when he had found him, he brought him to 00:08:37.62\00:08:40.99 Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with 00:08:41.02\00:08:44.14 the church and taught a great many people and the disciples 00:08:44.17\00:08:48.21 were first called Christians in Antioch. Now you know a couple 00:08:48.25\00:08:52.25 things stand out to me here. He's encouraging these lay 00:08:52.29\00:08:56.95 people but just because the members at large, as we were 00:08:56.99\00:09:01.02 called back in Acts chapter 8 this group that was scattered 00:09:01.06\00:09:04.87 was all of those who were in the church except the apostles. 00:09:04.91\00:09:08.74 So all of these church members who were not in leadership are 00:09:08.77\00:09:12.57 the ones who are spreading the word. They are here now 00:09:12.60\00:09:14.29 spreading the word in Antioch, but the leaders still have a 00:09:14.33\00:09:18.71 role to play and they are to cooperate with these lay people 00:09:18.74\00:09:22.34 but their role is a little bit different than what we often 00:09:22.37\00:09:27.19 see today. It appears that their role is almost like that of a 00:09:27.22\00:09:31.41 foreman who ensures that the work is being accomplished and 00:09:31.44\00:09:36.41 that help is being given and work is being provided but not 00:09:36.44\00:09:40.86 necessarily doing all the work themselves. So Barnabas and Paul 00:09:40.90\00:09:45.28 they didn't do all the work themselves but they were 00:09:45.32\00:09:47.77 orchestrating the work, they were helping to manage the work, 00:09:47.80\00:09:50.67 they were encouraging the work, they were resourcing the work, 00:09:50.71\00:09:54.48 all those types of things. But then there came a time when 00:09:54.51\00:09:57.99 their teaching abilities and qualities were going to be 00:09:58.02\00:10:01.43 needed too. So they're pulled into the mix and spend a whole 00:10:01.47\00:10:06.47 year teaching the people. So these lay people brought them 00:10:06.51\00:10:10.43 to an understanding of Christ and conversion and the church 00:10:10.46\00:10:13.99 was growing but then to get a little more depth these leaders 00:10:14.02\00:10:18.45 came in and added some teaching. It's amazing that in this 00:10:18.48\00:10:22.87 passage it says that the disciples were first called 00:10:22.90\00:10:25.86 Christians in Antioch. You know it takes me back up to verse 20 00:10:25.90\00:10:30.84 where it says that some of them were from Cypress and Cyrene, 00:10:30.88\00:10:35.32 etc. And it finishes saying that they were preaching the Lord 00:10:35.36\00:10:40.09 Jesus. So everywhere that these church members went they were 00:10:40.12\00:10:44.81 proclaiming and as we've said before, preaching is not 00:10:44.85\00:10:47.23 standing behind a pulpit, but preaching is simply sharing the 00:10:47.27\00:10:51.09 word. Sharing what God has done for you in the word, how he has 00:10:51.12\00:10:55.50 convicted your heart. So here we find that these early believers 00:10:55.54\00:10:59.55 were sharing the word so much and they had Jesus on their lips 00:10:59.58\00:11:03.56 so much that they said, Ah these Christ-ians, these 00:11:03.59\00:11:07.02 Christians. It was a slur. 00:11:07.06\00:11:08.09 It was, it was. It was a negative because of how much... 00:11:08.12\00:11:11.68 how fanatical they seemed to be about Jesus. But they liked it. 00:11:11.72\00:11:16.36 And we still do. Call me a Christ-ian. 00:11:16.39\00:11:17.89 Praise the Lord for it. Verses 27-30 just kind of segue into 00:11:17.92\00:11:23.33 chapter 12 and it brings up a couple interesting point. 00:11:23.37\00:11:26.34 It says, In these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch 00:11:26.38\00:11:29.76 and it talks about one of them, Agabus, foretelling a famine. 00:11:29.79\00:11:32.94 And then verse 29 says, The disciples each according to his 00:11:32.97\00:11:35.85 ability determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.70 in Judea. So we see that spirit of sacrifice. It's important to 00:11:38.73\00:11:43.12 note as we have earlier that in the end of time the book of 00:11:43.16\00:11:47.16 Revelation speaks of a remnant, that God's church at the end of 00:11:47.20\00:11:51.13 time will be a portion that will be like what we found here in 00:11:51.17\00:11:55.22 the beginning. So Acts gives us a model. And we found prophets 00:11:55.25\00:11:59.48 in the early church right here and the Bible says that one of 00:11:59.51\00:12:03.01 the characteristics of God's last day church is the gift of 00:12:03.04\00:12:06.22 prophecy. We see the spirit of sacrifice. We ought to see that 00:12:06.25\00:12:09.39 today in the church, too. We ought to see that in our own 00:12:09.43\00:12:13.48 lives more often. That leads us then into chapter 12 where we 00:12:13.52\00:12:17.80 see that Herod is not happy with what is happening here among the 00:12:17.84\00:12:22.09 church. No, no, not at all. If you look 00:12:22.13\00:12:24.54 in chapter 12 beginning with verse 1, it says, Now about that 00:12:24.58\00:12:29.01 time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some 00:12:29.04\00:12:33.26 from the church. Then it goes on in verse 2 to say, then he 00:12:33.30\00:12:37.45 killed James the brother of John with the sword. Now this is some 00:12:37.48\00:12:42.60 major harassment but I think it's noteworthy here that when 00:12:42.63\00:12:46.90 it talks about harassing some from the church, you know, when 00:12:46.93\00:12:51.57 we become Christians there is no way that we can escape, if we're 00:12:51.61\00:12:56.21 going to be true to God, there is no way that we can escape 00:12:56.25\00:12:59.07 being harassed in one form or another. Ridicule, 00:12:59.10\00:13:03.79 misunderstanding. There are so many ways in which this 00:13:03.82\00:13:08.32 harassment happens to us even today. You know, the apostle 00:13:08.36\00:13:12.65 Paul says all who desire to live Godly in Christ Jesus will 00:13:12.68\00:13:16.54 suffer persecution. When we see all of this persecution in the 00:13:16.58\00:13:19.95 early church, there's a reason for that. It's because they were 00:13:19.98\00:13:23.31 faithful. It's because they spoke the word with boldness, 00:13:23.35\00:13:27.56 it's because they were actively pressing forward the work and 00:13:27.59\00:13:31.77 if we take hold of that work, if we see lay people and 00:13:31.80\00:13:36.26 ministers alike working together under the operation of the Holy 00:13:36.29\00:13:40.78 Spirit, if we see fidelity and faithfulness to God in standing 00:13:40.81\00:13:44.99 for biblical principle and biblical practices, we're going 00:13:45.03\00:13:48.62 see persecution again, we're going to see harassment again. 00:13:48.65\00:13:52.87 Well we need to talk about this especially this martyrdom of 00:13:52.90\00:13:56.93 James the brother of John but we are now at our time for our 00:13:56.97\00:14:00.61 break. So stay tuned and we'll be back with you in just a few 00:14:00.65\00:14:04.26 moments. 00:14:04.30\00:14:05.33
