Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:21.41\00:00:23.04 I'm Pastor Mark Howard and I'm here with my co-host, my brother 00:00:23.07\00:00:27.69 Jim. We're studying in the book of Acts. And wow! The book of 00:00:27.72\00:00:32.14 Acts has so many powerful acts in it, doesn't it? Yes it does. 00:00:32.18\00:00:37.25 It doesn't slow down yet. We are going to be in chapter 10 today. 00:00:37.29\00:00:42.33 In fact, I want to recap a little bit of chapter 9 right 00:00:42.37\00:00:46.77 after we pause for a word of prayer and ask God to bless 00:00:46.81\00:00:51.18 our time in study. Father in heaven, we thank you 00:00:51.22\00:00:56.09 for the privilege we have of studying your word and coming to 00:00:56.13\00:00:59.04 know you and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. We pray the Holy 00:00:59.07\00:01:01.95 Spirit would guide our study right now and we ask it in 00:01:01.98\00:01:05.21 Jesus' name. Amen. In our last episode we read 00:01:05.25\00:01:12.06 about the conversion of Saul or Paul in the New Testament church 00:01:12.10\00:01:16.52 and that was the bulk of our discussion, but right toward the 00:01:16.55\00:01:20.72 of chapter 9 the Bible went on to tell us some of the things 00:01:20.76\00:01:25.32 that were happening in the ministry of Peter. It gives a 00:01:25.36\00:01:29.85 brief report of the healing of a man named Aeneas which seems 00:01:29.89\00:01:34.04 to be kind of a segue into the healing of a worker in the early 00:01:34.07\00:01:39.07 church named Tabitha or Dorcas, one is Greek and one is Aramaic. 00:01:39.10\00:01:44.06 Both names actually mean a gazelle and it's likely that it 00:01:44.10\00:01:49.62 referred to Tabitha's energy in helping the early church. 00:01:49.65\00:01:55.11 But she got sick and passed away and they had prepared her for 00:01:55.14\00:01:59.39 burial but they heard that Peter was in the area and they sent 00:01:59.42\00:02:04.57 for him. So Peter came to Joppa where Tabitha lived and he 00:02:04.61\00:02:08.90 actually, by the power of the Holy Spirit, raised her from the 00:02:08.93\00:02:12.45 dead. This is the first event that we've seen like this in the 00:02:12.48\00:02:16.03 New Testament church since the ascension of Jesus. So again, we 00:02:16.06\00:02:20.20 have a powerful miracle and the Bible tells us in Acts chapter 9 00:02:20.24\00:02:24.34 verse 42, It became known throughout all Joppa, and I'm 00:02:24.38\00:02:28.69 sure, Jim, that it spread beyond Joppa and the message went out 00:02:28.73\00:02:32.99 again that Jesus is alive and well in his church in the person 00:02:33.02\00:02:37.74 of his saints. Now we carry on into chapter 10. In fact, the 00:02:37.77\00:02:42.11 last verse of chapter 9 tells us that Peter remained in Joppa 00:02:42.14\00:02:46.82 with Simon a tanner and this leads us into chapter 10 verse 1 00:02:46.86\00:02:51.01 And the Bible tells us, There was a certain man in Caesarea 00:02:51.04\00:02:55.49 called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian 00:02:55.52\00:02:59.56 regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his 00:02:59.60\00:03:03.19 household and obviously as he was of the Italian regiment he 00:03:03.22\00:03:06.77 was a gentile man, but he feared God with all his household and 00:03:06.81\00:03:10.50 gave alms generously to the people and prayed to God always. 00:03:10.53\00:03:14.08 Verse 3 says, About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly 00:03:14.12\00:03:17.59 in vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, Cornelius. 00:03:17.63\00:03:22.07 And when he observed him he was afraid. You know, it just grabs 00:03:22.11\00:03:25.86 my attention here, Jim, that when we were in our last chapter 00:03:25.89\00:03:29.99 God came to Ananias and he said Ananias and then Ananias said 00:03:30.03\00:03:34.20 here I am Lord. And here he says Cornelius and he waits for a 00:03:34.24\00:03:37.94 response. Much like we saw with Peter when he healed the lame 00:03:37.97\00:03:41.85 man and he said, Look at me. God wants to make sure he has our 00:03:41.89\00:03:45.60 full attention here. Cornelius, he says, in verse 4. When he 00:03:45.63\00:03:49.75 observed him he was afraid and said what is it Lord. So he said 00:03:49.79\00:03:53.88 to him your prayers and alms have come up for a memorial 00:03:53.91\00:03:58.15 before God. Now send men to Joppa and send for Simon whose 00:03:58.19\00:04:02.36 sir name is Peter. He is lodging with Simon a tanner whose house 00:04:02.39\00:04:06.82 is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do. And when the 00:04:06.86\00:04:11.25 angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two 00:04:11.29\00:04:14.33 of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those 00:04:14.36\00:04:18.02 who waited on him continually. So when he had explained all 00:04:18.05\00:04:22.12 these things to them, he sent them to Joppa. So there's our 00:04:22.16\00:04:26.20 introduction of quite an interesting account that you're 00:04:26.23\00:04:30.80 going to pick up on here. Yes. Now comes a very 00:04:30.84\00:04:34.14 interesting vision that God gave as a gift to Peter and it picks 00:04:34.18\00:04:37.94 up in verse 9. So it says the next day as they went on their 00:04:37.98\00:04:42.05 journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop 00:04:42.09\00:04:46.22 to pray about the sixth hour. And so Peter goes up about the 00:04:46.25\00:04:51.42 sixth hour and he's diligent to spend time in prayer and make 00:04:51.45\00:04:55.58 sure he maintains his connection with God. But in verse 10 it 00:04:55.62\00:04:59.94 says then he became very hungry and wanted to eat but while they 00:04:59.97\00:05:04.68 made ready he fell into a trance So you can only imagine, here he 00:05:04.72\00:05:09.39 is, it's suppertime, he's starting to get hungry, he falls 00:05:09.43\00:05:14.57 into a trance. You know if I drift off if I'm really hungry 00:05:14.60\00:05:20.12 I might dream of banana splits or a burrito, who knows what. 00:05:20.15\00:05:24.50 But anyway this is sort of what ends up happening because in 00:05:24.54\00:05:29.41 verse 11 it says, He saw heaven opened... he fell into a trance, 00:05:29.44\00:05:33.58 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound 00:05:33.62\00:05:37.47 at the four corners descending to him and let down to the 00:05:37.51\00:05:41.29 earth. In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth 00:05:41.33\00:05:45.88 wild beasts, creeping things and birds of the air. And a voice 00:05:45.92\00:05:50.46 came to him, Rise Peter, kill and eat. But Peter said, Not so 00:05:50.49\00:05:55.00 Lord, for I have never eaten anything common or unclean. 00:05:55.03\00:05:58.50 And a voice spoke to him again the second time. What God has 00:05:58.54\00:06:01.98 cleansed you must not call common. This was done three 00:06:02.01\00:06:05.22 times and the object was taken up into heaven again. Now for 00:06:05.26\00:06:10.83 our viewers we need to just give a little explanation here 00:06:10.86\00:06:16.37 that when the Bible is referring to in this particular trance, in 00:06:16.40\00:06:21.47 this vision that Peter had, these wild beasts and creeping 00:06:21.51\00:06:25.36 things and being common, we have to recognize that in the Bible 00:06:25.40\00:06:31.06 there were certain meats, certain foods that were 00:06:31.09\00:06:34.60 considered clean and certain ones were unclean. There was 00:06:34.63\00:06:38.13 both ceremonial cleanness and uncleanness. We saw in the 00:06:38.16\00:06:41.59 gospels where the Pharisees felt like they needed to wash their 00:06:41.62\00:06:44.96 hands so that any food that may have been touched by gentiles 00:06:44.99\00:06:48.29 they could remove that ceremonial uncleanness so that 00:06:48.32\00:06:52.73 they wouldn't be defiled in that way, but there was a genuine 00:06:52.76\00:06:56.86 clean and unclean distinction between meats that started all 00:06:56.90\00:07:00.27 the way back in the times of... well from the very beginning 00:07:00.31\00:07:04.07 but we see it in the days of Noah when as the animals walked 00:07:04.10\00:07:07.82 onto the ark they walked in pairs, in twos, but also in 00:07:07.86\00:07:12.72 sevens. The ones that were clean went in sevens because after the 00:07:12.76\00:07:18.24 flood there would be need to eat the flesh of animals as well 00:07:18.27\00:07:22.67 as offer sacrifices of these animals. And so we have this 00:07:22.70\00:07:27.03 distinction between and unclean and that continued in the book 00:07:27.07\00:07:30.02 of Leviticus. We see in Leviticus chapter 11 that God 00:07:30.06\00:07:33.57 made this distinction between clean and unclean beasts, those 00:07:33.61\00:07:37.01 that could be eaten and those that were not permitted to be. 00:07:37.05\00:07:40.79 So Peter sees all these coming down on this sheet and this 00:07:40.83\00:07:44.50 voice saying, Rise Peter, kill and eat, and he's saying I don't 00:07:44.53\00:07:48.23 understand. I've never eaten anything like that of course 00:07:48.26\00:07:50.71 Lord, I wouldn't be disobedient. They were considered an 00:07:50.75\00:07:53.17 abomination, right. As you keep reading it just makes me think 00:07:53.20\00:08:00.68 of those who read this passage... 00:08:00.71\00:08:02.32 Well this passage is often cited as a reason or as an evidence 00:08:02.35\00:08:08.07 that those dietary restrictions no longer apply in New Testament 00:08:08.11\00:08:13.79 times. People say well Acts chapter 10, that's what Peter's 00:08:13.83\00:08:16.73 vision showed. So they say look, after the 00:08:16.77\00:08:20.35 death of Jesus apparently there was no more distinction between 00:08:20.38\00:08:23.69 clean and unclean and this vision revealed that. They're 00:08:23.72\00:08:27.84 just certain that the meaning of this particular vision is 00:08:27.87\00:08:31.96 that now we should be permitted to eat animals regardless of 00:08:32.00\00:08:35.29 whether they're clean or unclean according to the Bible. 00:08:35.32\00:08:38.96 But notice verse 17. Verse 17 says but now while Peter 00:08:38.99\00:08:43.17 wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen 00:08:43.21\00:08:47.21 meant, behold the men who had been sent from Cornelius had 00:08:47.24\00:08:51.10 made inquiry for Simon's house and stood before the gate. 00:08:51.13\00:08:54.84 So Peter is trying to figure out what did this mean. So while 00:08:54.88\00:08:58.73 there may be some who say well it's clear, it says it right 00:08:58.77\00:09:02.13 there; now all of these beasts are clean and we can eat them, 00:09:02.16\00:09:06.96 apparently it wasn't so clear to Peter. They saw this literally, 00:09:06.99\00:09:11.75 those who use this to justify the idea that there's no more 00:09:11.79\00:09:16.00 distinction, but Peter clearly knew from the very beginning 00:09:16.03\00:09:19.52 that this was not to be taken literally and he was trying to 00:09:19.55\00:09:23.30 figure out what the symbolism of the prophecy really meant. 00:09:23.34\00:09:27.01 Furthermore, just one more point on that; some claim that there's 00:09:27.05\00:09:30.89 certain statements of Jesus that make it clear that there's 00:09:30.93\00:09:34.31 no more distinction between clean and unclean foods but 00:09:34.35\00:09:37.70 Peter put that out of possibility as well when he 00:09:37.74\00:09:41.09 says, Lord I have never eaten anything common or unclean. 00:09:41.12\00:09:44.64 If Jesus had made a statement making no distinction then 00:09:44.67\00:09:48.12 there's no reason for Peter here long after... That's exactly 00:09:48.15\00:09:53.12 right. Apparently Peter didn't hear from the Lord that all of 00:09:53.16\00:09:58.09 these things were okay to now eat regardless of their 00:09:58.13\00:10:02.28 distinction between clean and unclean. 00:10:02.32\00:10:03.35 That's right. So Peter never does take anything from the 00:10:03.38\00:10:05.94 sheet. It goes up and he's scratching his head about what 00:10:05.97\00:10:09.20 it means and the Bible goes on to tell us that these men come 00:10:09.24\00:10:12.91 from Cornelius and as they're coming into the front gate the 00:10:12.95\00:10:15.91 Lord actually speaks to Peter and he tells them, they're 00:10:15.94\00:10:18.83 coming in and you need to go out and meet these men and doubt 00:10:18.87\00:10:22.38 nothing and go with them. So Peter goes and meets the men and 00:10:22.42\00:10:25.52 follows them to the house of Cornelius. Now we're jumping 00:10:25.56\00:10:28.99 ahead to verse 24 and it says, And the following day they 00:10:29.02\00:10:32.98 entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them and had 00:10:33.02\00:10:36.81 called together his relatives and close friends. As Peter was 00:10:36.84\00:10:40.05 coming in Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and 00:10:40.08\00:10:43.69 worshipped him, but Peter lifted him up saying, stand up, I 00:10:43.73\00:10:48.30 myself am also a man and as he talked with him he went in and 00:10:48.34\00:10:52.87 found many who had come together. Then he said to them 00:10:52.91\00:10:55.75 You know how unlawful it is for Jewish men to keep company with 00:10:55.79\00:11:00.09 or to go to one of another nation, but God has shown me 00:11:00.13\00:11:04.36 that I should not call any man common or unclean. Here's where 00:11:04.40\00:11:08.46 Peter gets the understanding this is what the vision meant. 00:11:08.49\00:11:12.43 That which is now clean which God has cleansed is not the 00:11:12.47\00:11:16.28 animals but God is showing that there is no distinction here 00:11:16.31\00:11:19.90 between Jew and Gentile. Jim, this is interesting in light of 00:11:19.94\00:11:23.97 the fact that in one of our previous episodes the stoning 00:11:24.01\00:11:29.87 of Stephen, we briefly touched on the fact that there is a 00:11:29.91\00:11:35.70 a prophecy in the Old Testament scriptures in the book of Daniel 00:11:35.74\00:11:38.01 chapter 9 where God gave his nation of Israel one last 00:11:38.04\00:11:42.96 probationary period and that probationary period for the 00:11:43.00\00:11:48.16 nation came to a close with Stephen's address. And it's 00:11:48.19\00:11:52.38 interesting that since that time, and I should interject 00:11:52.42\00:11:56.25 here, that that doesn't mean that God won't save Jews, the 00:11:56.29\00:12:00.59 point is that as a nation as being a favored nation that 00:12:00.63\00:12:04.86 probation closed. They were no longer the vessel of truth, the 00:12:04.89\00:12:08.71 ones especially chosen to carry that. Now Jews and gentiles with 00:12:08.74\00:12:12.52 faith in Christ are all part of the same body. 00:12:12.56\00:12:14.23 And we don't have to assume that because immediately we start to 00:12:14.26\00:12:17.93 see a shift. First of all, right after that we see Phillip going 00:12:17.96\00:12:21.45 and baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch who was a gentile. We see 00:12:21.48\00:12:25.70 Saul's conversion and I want to refer to Acts chapter 22 where 00:12:25.73\00:12:29.47 Saul recounts his conversion there and it's interesting how 00:12:29.50\00:12:33.60 he says in verse 20 of Acts 22, And when the blood of your 00:12:33.64\00:12:37.68 martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting to 00:12:37.71\00:12:41.72 his death and guarding the clothes of those who were 00:12:41.75\00:12:44.04 killing him. Then he said to me, that is the Lord, Depart for I 00:12:44.07\00:12:48.13 will send you far from here to the gentiles. And now we come 00:12:48.17\00:12:52.69 to Acts chapter 10 and we see Peter who the Lord in a special 00:12:52.72\00:12:57.13 revelation comes to him and to Cornelius and puts them in 00:12:57.17\00:13:00.83 connection and again we see the gospel going to the gentiles. 00:13:00.87\00:13:04.05 So very clearly we're seeing a shift in the early church where 00:13:04.08\00:13:07.37 the gospel is being opened more fully to the gentile nations. 00:13:07.41\00:13:11.09 So here in the beginning of this chapter we have Cornelius, a 00:13:11.12\00:13:15.20 gentile, that God is speaking to him and he is one who believes 00:13:15.24\00:13:18.68 in God but he doesn't have all the truth that the Jewish nation 00:13:18.72\00:13:22.26 has been entrusted with. So God wants to bring him in connection 00:13:22.29\00:13:25.80 with Peter. But he knows that Peter is not going to be very 00:13:25.84\00:13:30.01 likely to do that, as Peter himself said, in his address 00:13:30.04\00:13:34.14 later in verse 28, You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man 00:13:34.18\00:13:37.58 to keep company with or go to one of another nation. So God 00:13:37.62\00:13:41.02 knows that in order for Cornelius to gain the benefit of 00:13:41.05\00:13:44.38 the church and Peter's preaching and teaching, he's going to have 00:13:44.42\00:13:48.40 to help him bring down the barriers that exist for him to 00:13:48.44\00:13:52.50 share his message with the gentiles. And so it is that he 00:13:52.53\00:13:55.98 gives this vision and Peter's trying to figure out what it 00:13:56.02\00:13:59.13 means and while he's trying to figure out what it means, here 00:13:59.17\00:14:03.86 comes the representatives from Cornelius and God says go with 00:14:03.89\00:14:07.86 them doubting nothing and as he's going I'm certain that he 00:14:07.89\00:14:11.93 begins to understand that vision was to teach me that now there 00:14:11.97\00:14:15.97 is no unclean, there is no common person, in terms of one 00:14:16.01\00:14:19.85 being more favored than another but rather all are equal and the 00:14:19.89\00:14:25.47 gospel now needs to go to Cornelius and to all gentiles. 00:14:25.50\00:14:28.83 We see the succession, like you said, in chapter 8, chapter 9 00:14:28.87\00:14:32.29 and chapter 10. Powerful. Well we're going to keep diving into 00:14:32.32\00:14:35.70 this message that Peter then shared with Cornelius, but 00:14:35.74\00:14:38.98 before we do we need to go to our break. So come back very 00:14:39.01\00:14:43.41 soon and we'll get started again in the book of Acts. 00:14:43.44\00:14:45.58
