Welcome back. We are studying the book of Acts. We're in 00:00:02.00\00:00:03.53 chapter 9 and we've been looking at the conversion of Saul and we 00:00:03.57\00:00:07.78 just before the break looked at how God put Saul in connection 00:00:07.82\00:00:12.11 with his church in the person of Ananias. We're going to pick up 00:00:12.15\00:00:16.41 there in Acts chapter 9 and in verse 13. God has just told 00:00:16.44\00:00:21.14 Ananias where to go; Go to a street called Straight and 00:00:21.17\00:00:25.99 Ananias says in verse 13, Lord I have heard from many about 00:00:26.03\00:00:30.22 this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem 00:00:30.25\00:00:35.17 and here he has authority from the chief priest to bind all who 00:00:35.21\00:00:40.09 call on your name. He was a little bit nervous about it. 00:00:40.13\00:00:43.93 But the Lord said to him, Go for he is a chosen vessel of 00:00:43.97\00:00:47.70 mine to bear my name before the gentiles, kings and the children 00:00:47.74\00:00:51.86 of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer 00:00:51.90\00:00:56.39 for my name's sake. And Ananias went his way and, of course, he 00:00:56.43\00:01:00.89 goes to Saul. Now what really grabs me here, Jim, is I'm 00:01:00.93\00:01:06.42 trying to put myself... If we were to covet a Christian 00:01:06.46\00:01:11.88 experience we think of the Apostle Paul, the mighty Apostle 00:01:11.92\00:01:15.38 Paul. You know he wrote most of the New Testament or a good part 00:01:15.42\00:01:20.10 of it, powerful preaching and conversions. Oh, to be like Paul 00:01:20.13\00:01:24.63 Oh to preach like Paul as one hymn says. But it's interesting 00:01:24.66\00:01:29.12 where God directs Ananias to Saul he says, He's a chosen 00:01:29.16\00:01:35.33 vessel of mine to bring my name before gentiles, etc., and I'm 00:01:35.37\00:01:40.05 going to show him how many things he must suffer. So he's a 00:01:40.08\00:01:44.80 chosen vessel to suffer and we don't really pick up on that as 00:01:44.84\00:01:49.93 often. So of course if you look at the ministry of Saul in one 00:01:49.96\00:01:54.74 place he was stoned and left for dead. He went through ship 00:01:54.77\00:01:59.40 wrecks and he went through times of scarcity of food, he went 00:01:59.43\00:02:03.71 through times of being beaten with 40 stripes minus one which 00:02:03.75\00:02:07.73 was the greatest amount in judgment and mercy mingled in 00:02:07.76\00:02:11.70 the Jewish mindset that you could give a man. 00:02:11.74\00:02:14.79 It's interesting I can imagine as the Lord communicates to Saul 00:02:14.82\00:02:18.57 You know, there's so much that appeals to our heart about being 00:02:18.61\00:02:23.28 chosen. He is my chosen vessel. You can see how that would warm 00:02:23.31\00:02:27.78 somebody's heart until he said now... 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.08 Oh you've been chosen. Great! What am I chosen for Lord? 00:02:30.12\00:02:33.41 To suffer. Oh really. And then the Lord is unfolding to him 00:02:33.44\00:02:36.66 now you're going to be beat with 40 stripes minus one. No, no you 00:02:36.70\00:02:40.19 already covered that. Oh that was another time, it's going to 00:02:40.22\00:02:45.08 to be three times. So you just think of this and yet Saul was 00:02:45.11\00:02:49.93 more than willing now for the Lord that he was fighting 00:02:49.97\00:02:54.29 against to suffer for his name's sake. We see this as a 00:02:54.32\00:02:57.66 characteristic in the New Testament church as well. 00:02:57.70\00:03:00.97 You almost get the sense that the Apostle Paul was really just 00:03:01.01\00:03:10.11 wanting to do the will of God and while he fought his 00:03:10.14\00:03:13.52 conviction for a long time because it would require 00:03:13.56\00:03:17.44 surrender of pride and other things, when it really was 00:03:17.48\00:03:21.30 opened to his view on the road to Damascus, it really didn't 00:03:21.33\00:03:26.18 matter about the suffering. He had a love and a commitment that 00:03:26.22\00:03:30.60 really made the suffering just something that would give him 00:03:30.63\00:03:34.59 a sense of honor that he was able to suffer for his Lord 00:03:34.62\00:03:38.04 especially he had to deal with the guilt and shame of the 00:03:38.08\00:03:41.66 persecution that he was a part of with the saints of God. 00:03:41.69\00:03:45.62 That's right. Just so our viewers understand, we're back 00:03:45.66\00:03:49.52 and forth between Saul and Paul. Saul was the Hebrew version of 00:03:49.56\00:03:53.14 Paul and the Bible calls him by both in the New Testament. 00:03:53.17\00:03:56.19 So we'll toss that back and forth, but we're talking about 00:03:56.23\00:03:59.25 the same individual here. That's right. Now if we look in 00:03:59.29\00:04:03.36 verse 17 it says that Ananias went his way and he entered the 00:04:03.39\00:04:07.76 house just as he was instructed it says and laying his hands on 00:04:07.79\00:04:12.17 him he said, Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you 00:04:12.20\00:04:15.77 on the road as you came has sent me that you may receive your 00:04:15.81\00:04:19.64 sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Now first thing 00:04:19.67\00:04:24.00 I want to point out here is notice the obedience of Ananias. 00:04:24.04\00:04:28.34 I mean you heard his fear as we talked about earlier but now he 00:04:28.38\00:04:33.07 comes right into the room where Saul is, the great persecutor of 00:04:33.11\00:04:37.07 the Christians, the one who is wreaking havoc and causing all 00:04:37.11\00:04:41.69 this unrest and discomfort among the whole church and he comes 00:04:41.73\00:04:46.58 right in and with just courage and faith says the Lord appeared 00:04:46.61\00:04:51.40 to me, he sent me to give you your sight back by laying on of 00:04:51.43\00:04:55.80 hands and, boom, he does it, and immediately, the Bible says in 00:04:55.83\00:05:00.60 verse 18, There fell from his eyes something like scales and 00:05:00.64\00:05:04.91 he received his sight at once and he arose and was baptized. 00:05:04.95\00:05:09.44 Now scales falling from the eyes Certainly the Apostle Paul was 00:05:09.48\00:05:14.49 able to see again physically but in a very real sense this whole 00:05:14.52\00:05:19.49 experience had removed the scales from the Apostle Paul's 00:05:19.53\00:05:23.63 eyes, Saul at this point, to where he can actually see for 00:05:23.67\00:05:28.52 the first time what he has done and who Jesus really is. 00:05:28.55\00:05:33.33 That's right. You know it makes me think of what Paul writes in 00:05:33.37\00:05:38.73 II Corinthians chapters 3 and 4 about how there were some he 00:05:38.76\00:05:43.70 addressed as having a veil over their hearts and they were 00:05:43.73\00:05:48.90 blinded when it came to reading the Old Testament because that 00:05:48.94\00:05:53.12 veil would be taken away in Christ. That's really what his 00:05:53.15\00:05:57.15 experience was when he opened his heart to Christ he saw 00:05:57.19\00:06:00.38 things in a whole new way. Yeah, and I can't help but think 00:06:00.41\00:06:04.21 of my own conversion again. That is conversion. That's what 00:06:04.24\00:06:08.16 he's talking about. It's like suddenly everything you look at 00:06:08.20\00:06:12.27 in your life looks different. It's like putting on a different 00:06:12.30\00:06:16.34 color glasses and now you see everything differently and 00:06:16.37\00:06:20.31 you're like oh I can't believe that I didn't see 00:06:20.34\00:06:23.78 that before and I can't believe I didn't recognize that before. 00:06:23.81\00:06:27.13 That is what was happening to the Apostle Paul here with the 00:06:27.17\00:06:30.56 scales falling off his eyes. I think it's valuable to note as 00:06:30.59\00:06:33.82 you look in verse 19 and he received food and he ate finally 00:06:33.86\00:06:37.12 and that was encouraging and he spent time with the disciples 00:06:37.15\00:06:40.08 at Damascus which was probably a little fearful for them but 00:06:40.11\00:06:43.68 they were beginning to trust Paul. Then in verse 20 it says 00:06:43.71\00:06:47.51 immediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues that he 00:06:47.54\00:06:51.95 is the Son of God. Wow! He was just converted and it says 00:06:51.98\00:06:56.32 immediately. You know the best time for someone to share their 00:06:56.35\00:07:01.02 faith is just as soon as they experience their faith. As soon 00:07:01.05\00:07:05.55 as someone is convinced of the word and as soon as someone 00:07:05.59\00:07:09.64 receives the gospel, as soon as someone has that conversion 00:07:09.67\00:07:13.27 experience with Christ, they need to begin sharing that right 00:07:13.30\00:07:17.50 away while it's pressing upon their heart. If they don't you 00:07:17.54\00:07:22.05 find that as the days and weeks and then years go by it becomes 00:07:22.09\00:07:26.15 actually harder and harder for someone to come out of their 00:07:26.18\00:07:29.58 comfort zone and share their faith. The Apostle didn't let 00:07:29.62\00:07:32.95 that happen. Immediately he went and preached that Christ is the 00:07:32.98\00:07:36.52 same Christ that he was saying was an imposter. He immediately 00:07:36.55\00:07:39.49 went and starting proving from the scripture that he was the 00:07:39.53\00:07:42.43 Son of God. That's right. It's just like 00:07:42.47\00:07:43.76 honestly physical exercise when you haven't exercised for a 00:07:43.80\00:07:47.80 while, the longer you go the harder it is to get started. 00:07:47.83\00:07:51.93 But if you continue every day and you stay at it you get 00:07:51.96\00:07:55.99 stronger and verse 22 tells us that Saul increased all the more 00:07:56.03\00:08:00.37 in strength and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus 00:08:00.41\00:08:04.28 proving that this Jesus is the Christ. We don't think of Saul 00:08:04.31\00:08:07.89 as one who needed to increase in strength but we need to keep 00:08:07.93\00:08:11.31 this in mind, Jim. Repeatedly we see it with the other apostles, 00:08:11.34\00:08:14.81 the fishermen, we see it with Saul. We don't have any record 00:08:14.84\00:08:18.41 of Saul doing a lot or preaching prior to this. Now he was an 00:08:18.45\00:08:21.85 educated man, he was very sharp in his intellect, but here it 00:08:21.88\00:08:25.01 says he increased in strength and we're not talking about 00:08:25.04\00:08:28.13 physical strength, it's spiritual strength. 00:08:28.17\00:08:29.67 It was because immediately he began preaching. 00:08:29.70\00:08:30.73 immediately he began preaching. And the implication to us that 00:08:30.76\00:08:35.00 as he began to use what he had it gave him proficiency in his 00:08:35.03\00:08:39.29 preaching and proclamation and sharing of the truth and that 00:08:39.33\00:08:42.73 is how it works with every one of us. I remember they first 00:08:42.76\00:08:46.13 time that I ever shared the truth, I was petrified to share 00:08:46.17\00:08:50.04 the truth and I still get nervous, but the more you do it 00:08:50.08\00:08:53.92 the more the Lord increases your abilities. 00:08:53.95\00:08:56.51 That's right. We've talked about how nervous you get before you 00:08:56.54\00:09:02.64 have to present a program like this in front of cameras. 00:09:02.67\00:09:05.24 But you know after you stretch yourself the Lord can help you 00:09:05.27\00:09:09.34 and he can grow you and we've got to do that if we're going to 00:09:09.38\00:09:12.95 grow. You can't be strengthened unless you exercise. Now if you 00:09:12.98\00:09:16.93 look at verse 23 you see some interesting events happen in the 00:09:16.96\00:09:20.24 life of Saul. It says now after many days were passed the Jews 00:09:20.28\00:09:24.78 plotted to kill him. Now these same ones he was their champion, 00:09:24.82\00:09:29.05 but now they're plotting to kill him. They turned pretty quickly. 00:09:29.09\00:09:32.96 But their plot became known to Saul and they watched the gates 00:09:32.99\00:09:36.55 day and night to kill him. Then the disciples took him by night 00:09:36.59\00:09:39.93 and let him down through the wall in a large basket. So he's 00:09:39.97\00:09:43.95 already having to escape. When Saul had come to Jerusalem he 00:09:43.98\00:09:47.19 tried to join the disciples but they were all afraid of him and 00:09:47.23\00:09:51.04 did not believe that he was a disciples. It's like that with 00:09:51.07\00:09:54.81 us sometimes too. I won't forget when I first began to go through 00:09:54.84\00:09:59.90 my own experience with the Lord. Before that I was a very worldly 00:09:59.94\00:10:04.96 young college student and you as my brother were quick to 00:10:04.99\00:10:10.88 point that out to me. I remember still when news traveled to you 00:10:10.92\00:10:15.50 that I had been reading my Bible and really excited about it that 00:10:15.53\00:10:20.08 you said well Jim? Jim doesn't have a religious bone in his 00:10:20.12\00:10:24.56 body. And you know what, I didn't. But the Lord was putting 00:10:24.59\00:10:29.00 that there and it's just natural that when... 00:10:29.03\00:10:31.96 A prophet is without honor in his own home and among his own 00:10:31.99\00:10:34.20 countrymen. That's right. When people first, 00:10:34.23\00:10:37.62 and even sometimes for a while after, see the change that 00:10:37.65\00:10:42.59 happens to a person through the gospel of Christ and through the 00:10:42.62\00:10:44.63 gospel of Christ and through the power of the word, it takes some 00:10:44.67\00:10:47.65 time sometimes before they trust that that's genuine. That's a 00:10:47.68\00:10:51.21 good lesson for a lot of our viewers who maybe have recently 00:10:51.25\00:10:55.83 come into a faith in Christ or particular truths and their 00:10:55.86\00:10:59.78 family doesn't want to initially support that. But sometimes 00:10:59.82\00:11:03.06 it takes a little bit of time and that's what it was like here 00:11:03.09\00:11:06.17 It goes on to talk about how Barnabas took him and brought 00:11:06.21\00:11:09.84 him to the apostles, declared to them what had happened on the 00:11:09.87\00:11:13.41 road to Damascus and then it says in verse 29, And he spoke 00:11:13.45\00:11:16.93 boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the 00:11:16.97\00:11:20.42 Hellenists but they attempted, there it is again, to kill him. 00:11:20.45\00:11:24.10 So it's fascinating that all this is happening and now twice 00:11:24.14\00:11:28.04 after Paul's conversion, in the same chapter, he's already got 00:11:28.08\00:11:31.79 these people trying to kill. This was fascinating. In verse 00:11:31.83\00:11:35.88 31 it says then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee 00:11:35.92\00:11:40.78 and Samaria had peace. So before Saul was converted the church 00:11:40.81\00:11:45.06 didn't have peace. Now that Saul has been converted, the church 00:11:45.10\00:11:49.30 has peace but Paul doesn't have any because people are after him 00:11:49.33\00:11:53.66 Well the chapter then progresses and we don't have time to get 00:11:53.70\00:11:58.28 into a lot of it but we come to the raising of the dead of a 00:11:58.32\00:12:03.07 woman by the name of Tabitha or Dorcas who had been very helpful 00:12:03.10\00:12:07.82 to the church in meeting the needs of the church and Peter 00:12:07.85\00:12:11.42 had happened to be nearby in Lydia and he had healed a man 00:12:11.46\00:12:15.63 name Aeneas and when this healing took place and the 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.88 people in Joppa heard about it where Dorcas was 00:12:18.91\00:12:22.10 they sent for Peter. 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.22 The Bible tells us that Dorcas had died and they had washed 00:12:24.26\00:12:27.75 her body and evidently prepared for burial and they said he's 00:12:27.78\00:12:31.33 got to come quick. In other words, they couldn't just leave 00:12:31.36\00:12:34.46 here there forever but it's interesting that they must have 00:12:34.49\00:12:37.52 felt that Peter would be able to raise her from the dead because 00:12:37.55\00:12:41.18 of the works of Jesus that they had seen him do even though this 00:12:41.21\00:12:44.80 hadn't happened in the New Testament church and sure enough 00:12:44.83\00:12:47.88 the Bible says Peter comes and he raises Tabitha, Dorcas, from 00:12:47.91\00:12:51.22 the dead and of course the whole church rejoices and it became 00:12:51.26\00:12:54.53 known throughout all Joppa and many believed on the Lord. 00:12:54.57\00:12:57.98 So not only was there physical healing that happened here but 00:12:58.02\00:13:01.39 through this physical healing, as is often the case, many 00:13:01.42\00:13:04.19 believed on the Lord and we need to remember there's a close 00:13:04.22\00:13:07.79 connection between physical and spiritual healing and we as 00:13:07.82\00:13:11.30 Seventh-day Adventists promote a strong message of health and 00:13:11.34\00:13:14.78 there's a reason; because the health of the body and the 00:13:14.82\00:13:17.43 restoration that comes through that is directly tied to 00:13:17.47\00:13:21.14 spiritual restoration. Well friends, we're out of time. 00:13:21.17\00:13:25.05 So we look forward to diving back in to chapter 10 on our 00:13:25.09\00:13:28.93 next episode of Books of the Book. See you then. 00:13:28.97\00:13:32.38
