Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:20.42\00:00:23.01 I'm Pastor Mark Howard. I'm here with my co-host, my brother, 00:00:23.04\00:00:26.75 Jim, and we are studying the book of Acts. We have a powerful 00:00:26.78\00:00:30.45 chapter today, once again, I can say in the book of Acts as we 00:00:30.49\00:00:33.84 are looking at the conversion of Saul. Now we had picked up on 00:00:33.88\00:00:37.65 this, Jim, in Acts chapter 8, well right at the end of chapter 00:00:37.68\00:00:41.45 7 and 8 where we looked at the stoning of Stephen. It tells us 00:00:41.49\00:00:44.82 in Acts chapter 8 verse 1 that a young man, Saul, stood by 00:00:44.85\00:00:48.13 holding his garments and consenting to his death. We said 00:00:48.16\00:00:51.37 we are going to get to that a little bit later. Well here in 00:00:51.40\00:00:55.41 Acts chapter 9 we find that Saul is still fighting the Christian 00:00:55.45\00:00:58.85 church and I want to pick up there in Acts chapter 9 verse 1. 00:00:58.89\00:01:02.06 I hope you have your Bibles with you and before we go into 00:01:02.09\00:01:05.66 reading, we're going to turn our attention to the Lord and ask 00:01:05.70\00:01:09.23 his guidance as we study his word. 00:01:09.26\00:01:11.26 Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word and again we thank 00:01:11.29\00:01:16.10 you for the Spirit of Truth to guide us. We ask that He would 00:01:16.13\00:01:20.91 lead us now as we study and help us to apply these things to our 00:01:20.94\00:01:24.70 hearts. We ask it in Jesus name Amen. 00:01:24.74\00:01:27.10 We're reading in Acts chapter 9 and beginning in the first verse 00:01:27.13\00:01:31.10 the Bible says, Then Saul still breathing threats and murder 00:01:31.14\00:01:34.87 against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 00:01:34.91\00:01:38.60 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus so 00:01:38.64\00:01:42.16 that if he found any who are of the Way, that is followers of 00:01:42.20\00:01:45.70 Christ or those who were part of the Christian faith, whether men 00:01:45.74\00:01:49.20 or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he 00:01:49.24\00:01:53.08 journeyed he came near Damascus and suddenly a light shone 00:01:53.12\00:01:56.69 around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground and heard a 00:01:56.73\00:02:00.58 voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? 00:02:00.61\00:02:04.96 And he said, Who are you Lord? Then the Lord said, I am Jesus 00:02:05.00\00:02:09.43 whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the 00:02:09.47\00:02:13.87 goads. So he trembling and astonished, said, Lord what do 00:02:13.91\00:02:17.62 you want me to do? Then the Lord said to him, Arise and go into 00:02:17.66\00:02:21.12 the city and you will be told what you must do. And the men 00:02:21.16\00:02:24.32 who journeyed with him stood speechless hearing a voice but 00:02:24.36\00:02:27.67 seeing no one. Then Saul arose from the ground and when his 00:02:27.71\00:02:30.95 eyes were opened he saw no one, but they led him by the hand and 00:02:30.99\00:02:34.99 brought him into Damascus and he was three days without sight and 00:02:35.02\00:02:38.99 neither ate nor drank. This is a powerful passage of 00:02:39.02\00:02:43.21 scripture and I think we need to comment on a few different 00:02:43.25\00:02:47.44 things in this passage. First I find it very interesting. 00:02:47.47\00:02:51.56 Of course Saul is breathing threats and murder against the 00:02:51.59\00:02:55.35 disciples and we'll talk about that in a moment, but it says 00:02:55.39\00:02:58.89 as he is journeying and coming near Damascus and he sees this 00:02:58.93\00:03:03.23 heavenly light that a voice speaks and says, Saul, Saul, 00:03:03.27\00:03:07.50 why are you persecuting ME? You know, it's interesting here that 00:03:07.54\00:03:12.57 that Lord counts that which happens to his people as 00:03:12.60\00:03:17.40 happening to him. He identifies with us when we go through 00:03:17.44\00:03:20.69 ridicule, when we go through difficulty, when for standing 00:03:20.72\00:03:24.04 for Christ we have to face opposition or whatever it might 00:03:24.07\00:03:28.21 be, he recognizes that as happening to him. I don't know 00:03:28.24\00:03:31.78 that Saul would have been thinking that when he was doing 00:03:31.82\00:03:35.57 it, but now it's coming home to him that this was really the 00:03:35.61\00:03:39.33 Lord that he was persecuting. 00:03:39.36\00:03:40.94 Well in addition to that, if he was simply doing his duty as 00:03:40.97\00:03:45.42 he viewed it of ridding the church of heresy, that isn't 00:03:45.46\00:03:49.58 persecution. In other words, persecution would be something 00:03:49.61\00:03:53.19 that would be wholly different from what he was doing. He just 00:03:53.23\00:03:56.77 envisioned that he was keeping the faith pure. 00:03:56.81\00:03:59.00 He was doing what was right and persecution makes it clear 00:03:59.03\00:04:03.54 that it's wrongful. Yeah, and to be accused of that 00:04:03.57\00:04:07.03 was shocking to him. Absolutely, but certainly by the 00:04:07.07\00:04:10.46 evidence of this clear, bright light and supernatural presence 00:04:10.49\00:04:15.99 that he was in, he immediately says, Who are you Lord? And the 00:04:16.03\00:04:21.07 Lord's response, I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. It is hard 00:04:21.10\00:04:26.11 for you to kick against the goads. First and foremost, he 00:04:26.14\00:04:29.82 stood by at the stoning of Stephen. He was involved in the 00:04:29.85\00:04:33.46 persecution that scattered the disciples there in the beginning 00:04:33.49\00:04:38.03 of Acts chapter 8. All of that, no matter how many people it was 00:04:38.06\00:04:42.75 Jesus says I am the one you are persecuting. Then he says, It is 00:04:42.79\00:04:47.51 hard for you to kick against the goads. Now you've heard of being 00:04:47.55\00:04:52.23 goaded on. A goad was like a stick with a pointed end that 00:04:52.27\00:04:58.22 would prod on cattle or animals that needed a little bit of 00:04:58.26\00:05:04.31 extra push. You get this sense that Jesus is saying, I've been 00:05:04.35\00:05:09.14 pushing you, I've been prodding you through the power of the 00:05:09.17\00:05:13.73 Holy Spirit and it's hard for you to keep resisting the Holy 00:05:13.76\00:05:18.30 Spirit. That's an interesting thought because we read here in 00:05:18.34\00:05:22.85 the story of Saul and we think Wow! Saul was going totally this 00:05:22.89\00:05:27.36 direction. He seemed so hard and calloused. 00:05:27.40\00:05:30.01 Right. All of a sudden he's going totally the other and 00:05:30.05\00:05:31.31 from outward appearances, I mean here it says here in verse 1 00:05:31.35\00:05:34.73 he's still breathing threats and murder. I mean, it seems that he 00:05:34.76\00:05:38.50 is 100% confident in what he's doing. How did he turn around so 00:05:38.54\00:05:42.24 fast? Well the reality is he didn't 00:05:42.28\00:05:44.82 turn around so fast. I believe there was a process that the 00:05:44.85\00:05:48.05 Lord was taking him through and that's revealed in this 00:05:48.09\00:05:51.03 statement by Jesus, It is hard for you to kick against the 00:05:51.06\00:05:53.97 goads. My spirit has been speaking to you as you were 00:05:54.00\00:05:59.03 standing by at the stoning of Stephen and he said, Lord charge 00:05:59.07\00:06:03.76 not this sin against them. That prodded the heart of the Apostle 00:06:03.79\00:06:07.85 Paul and the Apostle Paul had to fight against it. I'm sure he 00:06:07.89\00:06:11.49 wrestled over the matter. But when it was all said and done 00:06:11.52\00:06:15.16 the best way he could find to silence that voice of conviction 00:06:15.19\00:06:19.28 was to just get all the more furious breathing threats and 00:06:19.31\00:06:23.36 murder. That's right. Breathe threats 00:06:23.40\00:06:24.93 and murder. So I think there's a lesson in that to us too. 00:06:24.97\00:06:29.12 Sometimes we try to drown conviction by being overly 00:06:29.15\00:06:34.47 adamant or overly dogmatic about something as if to prove that we 00:06:34.51\00:06:41.04 are right and sometimes we need to recognize that conviction 00:06:41.08\00:06:45.40 comes to each one of us in different areas of our life and 00:06:45.44\00:06:50.41 sometimes our responses can help to enlighten our minds that 00:06:50.44\00:06:54.51 maybe we need to stop and take a look at what's happening. Maybe 00:06:54.54\00:06:58.57 the Lord is speaking to us. Because I think that's a lesson 00:06:58.61\00:07:01.67 we can learn here. Apparently Saul didn't stop and say maybe 00:07:01.70\00:07:04.69 this what I'm experiencing in my heart is the Lord speaking to me 00:07:04.73\00:07:07.44 I think about a friend that I was studying the Bible with 00:07:07.48\00:07:13.04 once. We weren't talking anything about lifestyle or how 00:07:13.07\00:07:17.92 to live a godly life in that way. We were just talking about 00:07:17.96\00:07:21.46 simple things like the authority of the Bible and that sort of 00:07:21.50\00:07:24.97 thing and after one of the first Bible studies we had together 00:07:25.01\00:07:28.32 he started talking to me about this violent video game that he 00:07:28.35\00:07:31.67 had created and whether or not I thought that that was right or 00:07:31.71\00:07:34.99 wrong. I remember talking to him and saying, You know, I 00:07:35.03\00:07:38.88 don't think we've talked anything about that. So who's 00:07:38.92\00:07:42.70 been talking to you? Sometimes we need to recognize that the 00:07:42.74\00:07:47.15 voice of the Holy Spirit is active in our life. 00:07:47.19\00:07:49.57 That's right. You know, it's interesting, Jim, sometimes when 00:07:49.60\00:07:53.66 the Holy Spirit convicts us we can get that feeling that to 00:07:53.70\00:07:57.52 yield to that conviction is going to be too hard for us. 00:07:57.55\00:08:01.30 But if we would take a look at what happens when we don't yield 00:08:01.33\00:08:04.90 or even when we hesitate or delay in yielding. This is what 00:08:04.94\00:08:08.78 we see here with Saul. Not only did he lose his sight on the 00:08:08.82\00:08:12.63 road to Damascus here temporarily; it says there in 00:08:12.67\00:08:15.46 verse 9 that he was three days without sight and neither ate 00:08:15.50\00:08:20.10 nor drank. Now I can see not eating much and not having 00:08:20.14\00:08:23.60 appetite and I've had situations like that but not eating or 00:08:23.64\00:08:28.38 drinking. The whole ideas here is he is now having to deal with 00:08:28.42\00:08:33.12 the guilt, the immense of guilt... Keep in mind he was 00:08:33.16\00:08:37.94 putting to death the very people that he should have been 00:08:37.98\00:08:41.75 defending. He was thinking he was standing for the cause of 00:08:41.78\00:08:45.49 God and he was stamping out the cause of God. And now when he 00:08:45.53\00:08:49.20 comes to the realization of that he has to deal with the 00:08:49.24\00:08:52.38 aftermath and the anguish and the guilt of that and he can't 00:08:52.42\00:08:55.93 bring himself to eat or drink. So I say when the Holy Spirit 00:08:55.97\00:08:59.40 brings conviction sometimes we feel like the follow-through is 00:08:59.44\00:09:03.04 going to be difficult but the way of the transgressor is hard 00:09:03.07\00:09:06.85 the scripture says and it is much better to yield when the 00:09:06.88\00:09:10.35 Holy Spirit calls us, while it is still called the day, the 00:09:10.39\00:09:13.83 apostle says, than to put it off. 00:09:13.86\00:09:16.11 That's exactly right. If you look further now in verse 10 00:09:16.15\00:09:20.46 the story continues and Saul now has lost his sight and we have 00:09:20.50\00:09:27.18 a bit of a problem that needs to be dealt with. It says in verse 00:09:27.21\00:09:33.86 10, Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named 00:09:33.89\00:09:38.02 Ananias and to him the Lord said in a vision, Ananias, and he 00:09:38.05\00:09:42.33 said here I am Lord. So the Lord said to him, Arise and go to the 00:09:42.36\00:09:46.60 street called Straight and inquire at the house of Judas 00:09:46.64\00:09:49.77 for one called Saul of Tarsus. For behold he is praying and in 00:09:49.81\00:09:54.06 a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting 00:09:54.09\00:09:58.44 his hand on him so that he might receive his sight. This is a 00:09:58.48\00:10:03.04 fascinating account. First of all, notice that it says that 00:10:03.08\00:10:07.84 when the Lord comes to Ananias he says arise and go to a street 00:10:07.87\00:10:13.35 called Straight. So specific. You can't help but think that 00:10:13.39\00:10:18.76 there have been times when the Lord has sent his own servants 00:10:18.79\00:10:24.78 to our own street, to our own homes. I think often that when 00:10:24.81\00:10:30.31 I was studying my Bible in my own conversion experience in the 00:10:30.34\00:10:34.92 basement of my parents' home when I was 22 years old that the 00:10:34.95\00:10:39.23 Lord knew that. He knew the town I lived in, the street 00:10:39.27\00:10:43.34 I was on, the home I was in, the room in that home I was in and 00:10:43.38\00:10:47.42 he will come to us wherever we are. Here he says I have a 00:10:47.45\00:10:52.29 servant named Saul and he's praying and he needs a bit of a 00:10:52.33\00:10:57.13 revelation here. Now I wonder though, Saul was such an 00:10:57.17\00:11:00.89 educated man and he had received this clear revelation from God 00:11:00.92\00:11:07.02 on the road to Damascus. Why did the Lord not give him 00:11:07.05\00:11:10.60 instruction right there? Why did the Lord bring him into contact 00:11:10.63\00:11:15.10 with Ananias and send Ananias to him. God was connecting Saul 00:11:15.14\00:11:19.57 to the church and I find that while God works with us 00:11:19.60\00:11:23.97 independently and he certainly does work on our hearts 00:11:24.01\00:11:28.30 individually, just to take instructions from God is not all 00:11:28.34\00:11:33.33 that humbling. But to take instructions from another man 00:11:33.37\00:11:37.85 and to have someone else to whom we are accountable... 00:11:37.88\00:11:42.33 who has like passions and weaknesses... 00:11:42.36\00:11:44.90 Exactly who has those same weaknesses that we do, it can 00:11:44.93\00:11:49.01 be very, very humbling. So another point here is that 00:11:49.05\00:11:53.06 besides the fact that this is intended to help bring humility 00:11:53.09\00:11:56.74 to Saul, it also is helping him to see that God has established 00:11:56.77\00:12:01.49 a church and God, while he does work with people individually 00:12:01.53\00:12:06.25 outside of the church, his goal is to have one fold and to 00:12:06.29\00:12:10.94 connect people with that body. There is really no such thing as 00:12:10.97\00:12:14.30 a lone ranger Christian. No. In fact, Jim, we don't have 00:12:14.33\00:12:17.59 any record in the book of Acts which again is our template for 00:12:17.63\00:12:21.27 how church is done according to God, we don't have any record 00:12:21.31\00:12:24.53 in the book of Acts of somebody where God reached and converted 00:12:24.56\00:12:27.75 and they were baptized of the Spirit that was not put in 00:12:27.79\00:12:30.98 connection with the church, the organized church. We saw it with 00:12:31.01\00:12:34.41 the Ethiopian eunuch and we'll see it other places as we go on. 00:12:34.45\00:12:37.23 We never see somebody who's just independently sent off separate 00:12:37.27\00:12:42.34 from his church. So even someone as well educated as Saul, now he 00:12:42.37\00:12:46.60 comes into contact with people who maybe have less experience 00:12:46.63\00:12:50.83 and the like but they are instructing him. Ananias is 00:12:50.86\00:12:55.56 asked to instruct him. One thing I'm thankful for though is if 00:12:55.60\00:13:00.21 you look back at verse 6 when Saul first responded to the Lord 00:13:00.24\00:13:04.64 he said trembling and astonished Lord what do you want me to do? 00:13:04.68\00:13:09.65 So you know as hardened as we see Saul the Lord saw something 00:13:09.68\00:13:14.18 in him. He saw someone who was really thinking he was doing 00:13:14.21\00:13:19.13 God's service and while we may look at people and not be able 00:13:19.17\00:13:23.13 to see from the outside what's really going one and we may 00:13:23.17\00:13:27.07 judge in certain ways, the Lord knows when someone has the right 00:13:27.10\00:13:31.48 intent and he can turn somebody around just like Saul. Now it 00:13:31.52\00:13:35.86 may not have happened in this moment, it may have been a 00:13:35.90\00:13:38.68 process, but this is pretty dramatic, this conversion, and 00:13:38.71\00:13:42.01 God can do that for us. Well we need to keep going but before 00:13:42.05\00:13:45.63 we do we've got to go to break. So stay tuned and we'll be back 00:13:45.67\00:13:49.22 with you in just a moment with Books of the Book. 00:13:49.25\00:13:51.08
