Welcome to Books of the Book. My name is Jim Howard and I'm 00:00:21.93\00:00:25.12 here with my brother Mark. We're both pastors in the Michigan 00:00:25.16\00:00:28.32 Conference of Seventy-day Adventists and we have been 00:00:28.35\00:00:32.48 studying this book of Acts, a powerful book of the early 00:00:32.52\00:00:36.79 church's history and where we left off last time was at the 00:00:36.83\00:00:41.04 conclusion of chapter 5 and just entering into chapter 6 of the 00:00:41.08\00:00:46.19 book of Acts. So I'd like to go back to the end of chapter 5 and 00:00:46.22\00:00:50.65 just review just a short verse. But before I do I think it's 00:00:50.69\00:00:54.46 important that we stop and pray and ask God to especially bless 00:00:54.50\00:00:58.24 our study time together. Father in heaven, we are so 00:00:58.27\00:01:03.19 grateful that you have given us the privilege of studying your 00:01:03.23\00:01:06.73 word. We pray that the Spirit would be given to us now that 00:01:06.77\00:01:10.36 we might understand it the way you would have us to. In Jesus' 00:01:10.39\00:01:13.95 name, Amen. Well if we look here at the end 00:01:13.98\00:01:19.36 of chapter 5 in verse 42, and we'd invite our viewers to open 00:01:19.39\00:01:24.07 up your Bibles and follow along with us, it concluded chapter 5 00:01:24.11\00:01:29.29 after this incredible story of the apostles being challenged 00:01:29.33\00:01:34.65 and ultimately beaten, that they responded in verse 42 in a way 00:01:34.68\00:01:39.38 that we find very supernatural. It says and daily in the temple 00:01:39.41\00:01:43.80 and in every house they did not cease teaching and preaching 00:01:43.83\00:01:47.70 Jesus as the Christ. It seemed that nothing was going to stop 00:01:47.74\00:01:51.58 the early church as we read here in the book of Acts and 00:01:51.61\00:01:55.32 sometimes I have to admit, reading the book of Acts makes 00:01:55.35\00:01:58.99 me a little jealous. I think wow this church had such power, they 00:01:59.02\00:02:04.03 had such purity. There didn't seem to be any problems that 00:02:04.07\00:02:07.92 existed. I mean, today we have struggle and strife in so many 00:02:07.96\00:02:11.47 things, but it didn't appear that way to them. The more that 00:02:11.51\00:02:14.96 they faced opposition, the more boldness and courage and the 00:02:15.00\00:02:18.54 more growth that came into the church. But as we enter into 00:02:18.58\00:02:22.96 chapter 6 we find something that begins to give a little hint 00:02:22.99\00:02:26.59 that things were not quite as different then as they are now. 00:02:26.63\00:02:30.85 It says in chapter 6 and verse 1 Now in those days when the 00:02:30.88\00:02:35.07 number of the disciples was multiplying, which was 00:02:35.10\00:02:37.47 definitely a good problem, there arose a complaint against the 00:02:37.51\00:02:41.72 Hebrews by the Hellenists because their widows were 00:02:41.76\00:02:45.67 neglected in the daily distribution. So here we see 00:02:45.71\00:02:49.55 that you know with growth come challenges. There were some 00:02:49.59\00:02:54.30 feelings that some were getting more than others and it sounds 00:02:54.34\00:02:59.02 like it was a very real problem but it was producing some 00:02:59.06\00:03:02.21 unsettled and not very good feelings amongst the people. 00:03:02.25\00:03:05.37 So from here a wonderful plan began to emerge and I believe 00:03:05.40\00:03:10.02 God ordained for the purpose of the church today so that we 00:03:10.06\00:03:14.29 could learn from what they accomplished as a result of this 00:03:14.32\00:03:18.52 problem. That's right. When we look back 00:03:18.55\00:03:19.87 at chapter 6 and we continue on there, of course you have this 00:03:19.91\00:03:22.93 situation where the Hellenists who were Greek-speaking Jews... 00:03:22.97\00:03:25.96 It was probably not an intentional neglect and that 00:03:25.99\00:03:30.54 word neglect means they were overlooked and for whatever 00:03:30.58\00:03:32.54 reason it created this tension but it was tension that needed 00:03:32.58\00:03:37.41 to be addressed. It's interesting to see how the 00:03:37.44\00:03:39.98 apostles addressed it as we look at verse 2. It says, Then the 12 00:03:40.02\00:03:44.59 summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, It is not 00:03:44.62\00:03:48.78 desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables 00:03:48.82\00:03:53.28 therefore brethren seek out from among you seven men of good 00:03:53.31\00:03:57.91 reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom whom we may 00:03:57.94\00:04:01.29 appoint over this business, but we will give ourselves 00:04:01.33\00:04:04.61 continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. And this 00:04:04.65\00:04:08.88 saying pleased the whole multitude, etc. Now what happens 00:04:08.91\00:04:14.12 here is really fascinating. First of all they make the point 00:04:14.15\00:04:18.42 that it's not desirable that we should serve tables, but they 00:04:18.46\00:04:21.94 didn't say that serving tables was a bad thing. In other words, 00:04:21.98\00:04:25.27 they're using that expression to talk about distributing the food 00:04:25.31\00:04:28.74 for the needs of these Greek- speaking Jews and all the church 00:04:28.78\00:04:32.18 really. It's not that that wasn't a need and that serving 00:04:32.21\00:04:36.89 tables was a bad thing, but they realized that if we spend our 00:04:36.93\00:04:41.33 time serving tables it's going to take us away from what we 00:04:41.36\00:04:45.41 were called to do. It's interesting to me, Jim, how they 00:04:45.44\00:04:49.79 were clear enough on their purpose and mission not to allow 00:04:49.83\00:04:53.88 anything to distract from that and rather than ignore the 00:04:53.91\00:04:57.89 problem which would have created bigger problems they dealt with 00:04:57.93\00:05:00.85 it but they dealt with it in such a way as they would not 00:05:00.88\00:05:04.90 hinder their own working to preach the word and that's what 00:05:04.93\00:05:09.96 it says there in verse 4. We will give ourselves continually 00:05:09.99\00:05:14.99 to prayer and to the ministry of the word. And I think to 00:05:15.02\00:05:18.69 myself today and I think this is important for us to realize 00:05:18.73\00:05:21.83 whether we're talking about it in a church setting or in a 00:05:21.87\00:05:24.90 personal setting, the devil does not want the gospel message to 00:05:24.94\00:05:29.45 get out and he's always seeking to distract and when we give in 00:05:29.49\00:05:33.97 to those distractions he knows his plans are working and he 00:05:34.00\00:05:39.48 continues to throw all kinds of distractions our way and that 00:05:39.52\00:05:43.65 happens in our personal lives or in our corporate life as a 00:05:43.69\00:05:47.95 church. When the early church saw these distractions they 00:05:47.99\00:05:52.09 dealt with them but they never stopped their forward momentum 00:05:52.12\00:05:56.61 in proclaiming the gospel and I believe that that not only 00:05:56.64\00:06:00.55 kept the work going forward, it also hindered the enemy's 00:06:00.58\00:06:04.42 attempts to squelch the gospel message. Now another thing that 00:06:04.46\00:06:09.30 I think is important here is that we see the beginnings of, 00:06:09.34\00:06:13.00 well we've seen it before, but of organization of the early 00:06:13.04\00:06:16.63 church. It's interesting that it tells us in verse 2 that the 12 00:06:16.67\00:06:20.79 summoned the multitude. Now remember we had 11 when we 00:06:20.82\00:06:23.57 started the book of Acts and they found it important to 00:06:23.61\00:06:26.29 gather one more and that one more was Matthias who joined the 00:06:26.33\00:06:30.57 11 and became the twelfth. Now the church has added 3000 and 00:06:30.61\00:06:34.23 then 5000 so surely by now it doesn't matter that you have 12, 00:06:34.27\00:06:38.05 right? But evidently it does. It's still the 12. And now they 00:06:38.08\00:06:42.18 are appointing other leaders and organizing the church and 00:06:42.21\00:06:45.72 there's a purpose for that organization that I think you're 00:06:45.76\00:06:49.13 going to speak to here. Well it seems to me that when we 00:06:49.17\00:06:52.47 talk about the incredible growth of the church, you would think 00:06:52.51\00:06:57.65 it would slow things down. When you see an organization become 00:06:57.68\00:07:02.79 large and it kind of clogs everything up and it's slower 00:07:02.82\00:07:07.16 moving and that was, I'm sure, the fear ultimately that the 00:07:07.19\00:07:11.57 apostles had and why God gave this method of organization so 00:07:11.60\00:07:15.33 that it could continue to move quickly, the work that they were 00:07:15.37\00:07:19.76 called to do. You read through verse 4 and verse 5 and onward 00:07:19.79\00:07:24.15 it talks about setting aside these seven men who we 00:07:24.18\00:07:27.44 understand to be deacons. In verse 7, it says, then the word 00:07:27.48\00:07:32.52 of God slowed down. No absolutely not. Then the word 00:07:32.55\00:07:36.58 of God spread and the number of the disciples multiplied 00:07:36.61\00:07:40.26 greatly in Jerusalem and a great many of the priests were 00:07:40.30\00:07:44.42 obedient to the faith. So apparently organization, in 00:07:44.45\00:07:48.50 God's method of organization, should advance the work even 00:07:48.54\00:07:52.92 faster. What we saw here was the mission of the church to carry 00:07:52.96\00:07:57.41 the message that God had entrusted them with to the then 00:07:57.44\00:08:01.08 known world, that mission was given to every disciple of 00:08:01.12\00:08:05.01 Christ and they were actively doing that. But as the results 00:08:05.04\00:08:08.69 of that came in and people were added to their number, it 00:08:08.72\00:08:14.55 brought organization in as a necessity. So there needed to be 00:08:14.59\00:08:18.77 hierarchy, there needed to be some structure to the church. 00:08:18.81\00:08:22.90 But Jim isn't it true though and I think some of this comes up 00:08:22.94\00:08:27.00 from where we have seen organizations that seem to 00:08:27.03\00:08:30.63 encumber and slow down progress and I think a lot of Christians 00:08:30.67\00:08:34.40 get the mindset that organization is bad, but it 00:08:34.43\00:08:37.65 doesn't have to be. That's right and that's what 00:08:37.69\00:08:40.84 this is revealing. Now the idea of this organized structure 00:08:40.88\00:08:45.57 being developed you know does have a danger and that is that 00:08:45.60\00:08:50.50 we can get to a point where we begin to see the structure as 00:08:50.53\00:08:55.80 the true essence of the church and rather than having a mission 00:08:55.83\00:09:01.07 that drives the structure, we then have a structure that 00:09:01.10\00:09:05.43 replaces the mission. Unfortunately this can happen in 00:09:05.47\00:09:09.73 our own churches where we have programs, lots of programs; we 00:09:09.77\00:09:14.52 are very busy. In our churches we have Bible study groups and 00:09:14.55\00:09:19.68 Sabbath Schools and we have children's and youth ministries, 00:09:19.72\00:09:24.82 choirs, we have so many different things that are 00:09:24.85\00:09:27.71 valuable programs and important programs, but when we really 00:09:27.75\00:09:31.70 look closely at them, the primary target of these programs 00:09:31.74\00:09:36.03 is for the existing church and we can be so busy within the 00:09:36.06\00:09:40.85 structure of the church that we actually fail to continue 00:09:40.88\00:09:45.33 carrying forward the mission of spreading the word of God and 00:09:45.37\00:09:49.75 the message entrusted to us to the world. You find in this 00:09:49.78\00:09:54.75 passage that developing this structure didn't take away the 00:09:54.78\00:09:59.72 need to spread the word. Even these seven men who were 00:09:59.75\00:10:02.62 appointed, including Stephen. Now that he was appointed as a 00:10:02.66\00:10:05.90 deacon didn't mean now he just served tables and he wasn't 00:10:05.94\00:10:09.10 responsible for spreading the word. No, as a disciple of 00:10:09.13\00:10:12.55 Christ that's his job. He's a witness for Christ and so you 00:10:12.59\00:10:15.94 see in the next couple of verses Stephen full of faith and power 00:10:15.98\00:10:19.60 begins to speak about the things that he did and we're going to 00:10:19.63\00:10:23.07 come to chapter 7 where he gives an incredible address in which 00:10:23.11\00:10:26.63 he shares the message entrusted to him by God. So the mission of 00:10:26.67\00:10:30.16 of the church must not be replaced by the structure. 00:10:30.19\00:10:33.69 The structure must be given to support that mission. 00:10:33.73\00:10:36.90 That's right. And as you mentioned, it didn't slow down 00:10:36.94\00:10:40.04 the progression of the message. Even among the seven we see in 00:10:40.07\00:10:44.08 verse 12 that as a result of Stephen's preaching which the 00:10:44.12\00:10:48.02 Bible says could not be refuted. Verse 12 says they stirred up 00:10:48.05\00:10:51.51 the people, the elders and scribes, and they came upon him, 00:10:51.54\00:10:55.30 we see that expression again, seized him and brought him to 00:10:55.34\00:10:58.77 the council. So once again they can't refute the message of 00:10:58.80\00:11:02.81 truth and so they resort to very carnal measures to try to stop 00:11:02.84\00:11:06.56 the message, and it goes on to say, they set up false witnesses 00:11:06.59\00:11:10.32 who said this man does not cease to speak blasphemous words 00:11:10.35\00:11:13.90 against this holy place and the law for we have heard him say 00:11:13.93\00:11:17.33 that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change 00:11:17.37\00:11:20.74 the customs which Moses delivered to us. Now it's 00:11:20.77\00:11:23.50 interesting to me, Jim, that there are Christians today who 00:11:23.54\00:11:27.54 say that Jesus did that very thing; he came to change the law 00:11:27.58\00:11:31.64 and the customs that Moses gave. These were false witnesses who 00:11:31.67\00:11:35.70 had to be manufactured to say that because Stephen wasn't 00:11:35.74\00:11:38.93 preaching it and it wasn't a reality and it's sad today that 00:11:38.97\00:11:41.53 there are many Christians who pick up the argument of the 00:11:41.57\00:11:44.68 false witnesses of Stephen not even realizing it, I'm sure, 00:11:44.72\00:11:49.22 instead of realizing the truth of scripture. Well of course 00:11:49.26\00:11:53.75 tried to stir the people up but they stirred the people up and 00:11:53.78\00:11:57.24 they brought false witnesses but they could not refute the 00:11:57.27\00:12:01.40 message of Stephen and the message of the gospel spread 00:12:01.44\00:12:05.53 with power. That's right. And if you look at 00:12:05.57\00:12:07.29 how this concludes, it was very clear that the people were not 00:12:07.32\00:12:13.65 in any way confused about these false witnesses, because in 00:12:13.69\00:12:19.83 verse 15 God gives a marked indication of his favor upon 00:12:19.86\00:12:24.88 Stephen. It says, And all, in verse 15, all who sat in the 00:12:24.91\00:12:29.10 council looking steadfastly at him saw his face as the face of 00:12:29.14\00:12:32.98 an angel. There was something about him that convicted their 00:12:33.02\00:12:38.17 hearts that this man bore the dignity and power of God in his 00:12:38.21\00:12:43.14 bearing and right after this we see one of those most amazing 00:12:43.18\00:12:47.70 addresses ever given by Stephen in chapter 7. It says in verse 1 00:12:47.74\00:12:52.23 Then the high priest said, Are these things so? and Stephen 00:12:52.27\00:12:56.50 begins to respond with this beautiful appeal. We want to get 00:12:56.53\00:13:00.71 to that appeal, but before we do we've got to go to break. So 00:13:00.75\00:13:04.83 when we come back we'll dive into Acts chapter 7 and this 00:13:04.87\00:13:08.82 wonderful address of Stephen. 00:13:08.85\00:13:11.01
