Welcome back to "Books of the Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.48 Before our break, Mark, 00:00:03.51\00:00:04.88 we were taking a look here in Acts 5. 00:00:04.91\00:00:09.15 And we'd just read this amazing statement that the counsel 00:00:09.18\00:00:14.49 and specifically the high priest said in verse 28. 00:00:14.52\00:00:18.90 The high priest says, 00:00:18.93\00:00:20.30 "Did we not strictly command you not to teach this name." 00:00:20.33\00:00:24.27 As they have all authority over the apostles. 00:00:24.30\00:00:26.61 Exactly, and it seems interesting to me that 00:00:26.64\00:00:30.61 they felt that because of that position of high priest, 00:00:30.64\00:00:35.32 because of their authority 00:00:35.35\00:00:37.47 as counsel members and rulers of the people that 00:00:37.50\00:00:40.60 that position itself gave them 00:00:40.63\00:00:43.53 all of the authority that they needed. 00:00:43.56\00:00:45.30 Over the consciences of men. Exactly. 00:00:45.33\00:00:47.46 Exactly, and we see that we have to be very careful 00:00:47.49\00:00:51.05 not to ever feel that position 00:00:51.08\00:00:53.19 in it of itself is what provides authority. 00:00:53.22\00:00:55.84 We should respect position. That's right. 00:00:55.87\00:00:58.32 And I believe that the apostles did respect position, 00:00:58.35\00:01:00.78 but when that position 00:01:00.81\00:01:02.90 contradicted with the Word of God 00:01:02.93\00:01:05.02 and the clear will of God, their answer was quite clear. 00:01:05.05\00:01:09.47 In verse 29, we pick up and it says, 00:01:09.50\00:01:12.34 "But Peter and the other apostles answered and said, 00:01:12.37\00:01:14.91 We ought to obey God rather than men." 00:01:14.94\00:01:18.11 Now, this is another bold statement. 00:01:18.14\00:01:20.01 What's bold about it is, is evidently, 00:01:20.04\00:01:23.09 he's saying "Did we not strictly command you." Right. 00:01:23.12\00:01:25.86 And he's saying, "Well, shall we obey your command 00:01:25.89\00:01:28.18 or shall we obey the command of God." 00:01:28.21\00:01:30.01 And that's pretty much saying 00:01:30.04\00:01:32.67 that you're very contrary to what God is saying. 00:01:32.70\00:01:34.86 That's right, and to the Jews, 00:01:34.89\00:01:36.26 the high priest was the voice of God. 00:01:36.29\00:01:38.11 That's right. And so to call that high priest 00:01:38.15\00:01:40.27 not the voice of God was serious at time? 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.24 That's right. 00:01:42.27\00:01:43.64 But it does make very clear that because of the clarity 00:01:43.67\00:01:47.39 and distinction between what the high priest was saying 00:01:47.42\00:01:49.74 and the clear will of God. 00:01:49.77\00:01:51.81 The apostles were free to obey God 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.64 and contradict what the high priest 00:01:54.67\00:01:56.33 was saying and commanding. 00:01:56.36\00:01:58.01 Now they could have stopped right there. 00:01:58.04\00:02:00.02 But you know, they had the floor, 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.07 so they might as well give the gospel again. 00:02:02.10\00:02:04.84 So in verse 30, continue and say, 00:02:04.87\00:02:07.58 "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus 00:02:07.61\00:02:10.25 whom you murdered by hanging on a tree." 00:02:10.28\00:02:12.74 And so they started right here 00:02:12.77\00:02:14.28 and they once again placed the guilt 00:02:14.31\00:02:17.23 back on these religious leaders, 00:02:17.26\00:02:19.19 helped them once more to recognize. 00:02:19.22\00:02:20.84 They were trying to- the high priest was saying, 00:02:20.87\00:02:23.56 "You're trying to put this man's blood upon us?" 00:02:23.59\00:02:25.83 And instead of backing down from that 00:02:25.86\00:02:27.68 hey simply say, "Yes, you are the ones who murdered," 00:02:27.71\00:02:30.87 bringing it right back to them. 00:02:30.90\00:02:32.74 And the whole reason for that was so that they could do 00:02:32.77\00:02:35.14 what they did in the very next verse. 00:02:35.17\00:02:36.84 Verse 31, "Him, God exalted to His right hand 00:02:36.87\00:02:41.81 to be Prince and a Savior." Isn't that wonderful. 00:02:41.84\00:02:46.15 "Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel." 00:02:46.18\00:02:50.31 The same Israel that you are guardians of us 00:02:50.34\00:02:53.65 as high priest and leaders. 00:02:53.68\00:02:55.80 "And forgiveness of sins." 00:02:55.83\00:02:57.73 Here's that hope again 00:02:57.76\00:02:59.13 that Peter and the apostles always connected 00:02:59.16\00:03:01.21 with their clear, honest denunciations in many cases. 00:03:01.24\00:03:04.91 That hope of forgiveness of sins. 00:03:04.94\00:03:07.73 And then verse 32 says, 00:03:07.76\00:03:09.17 "And we are His witnesses to these things, 00:03:09.20\00:03:11.25 and so also is the Holy Spirit 00:03:11.28\00:03:13.85 whom God has given to those who obey Him." 00:03:13.88\00:03:16.86 Now, there's a couple of aspects, 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.26 it's almost the elements of salvation 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.04 and it's very short little statement. 00:03:20.07\00:03:22.61 It says "That God exalted Jesus to be Prince and Savior 00:03:22.64\00:03:26.62 to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins." 00:03:26.65\00:03:30.15 Now I have to comment on this, 00:03:30.18\00:03:31.55 because you know, we recognize 00:03:31.58\00:03:33.72 that God gives us the gift of forgiveness. 00:03:33.75\00:03:36.97 But too often we view the gift of repentance 00:03:37.00\00:03:39.66 as something that is our part and forgiveness is God's part. 00:03:39.69\00:03:43.55 But according to this passage 00:03:43.58\00:03:45.76 'repentance' which is that desire of the heart 00:03:45.79\00:03:50.14 and that ultimate turning away 00:03:50.17\00:03:52.52 from the things of my own selfish heart 00:03:52.55\00:03:54.71 and things of this world to the things of God. 00:03:54.74\00:03:57.20 And sorrow for sin. 00:03:57.23\00:03:58.60 That's right. Heartfelt. 00:03:58.63\00:04:00.00 The heartfelt conviction and sorrow for sin 00:04:00.03\00:04:01.92 and that turning back to do what's right. 00:04:01.95\00:04:04.61 The only way that can enter into my attitude 00:04:04.64\00:04:08.16 is through the power of God. 00:04:08.19\00:04:09.96 I can't manufacture that. 00:04:09.99\00:04:12.09 And so it's not a situation 00:04:12.12\00:04:14.32 where we have to clean ourselves up. 00:04:14.35\00:04:16.22 and then we come and God will forgive us. 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.55 You know I remember, when I was young, 00:04:18.58\00:04:20.85 we were young together at home. 00:04:20.88\00:04:22.94 And every once in a while 00:04:22.97\00:04:26.26 things would get really crazy and mom would- 00:04:26.29\00:04:28.76 well she'd have a maid come 00:04:28.79\00:04:31.22 and just to do a little cleaning, you know. 00:04:31.25\00:04:34.12 And I remember a couple of times 00:04:34.15\00:04:37.04 right before the maid came mom was so busy. 00:04:37.07\00:04:41.57 She was going around, picking up doing all these things. 00:04:41.60\00:04:44.93 You know, she is working all day, 00:04:44.96\00:04:46.49 she is doing, you know, she is so busy. 00:04:46.52\00:04:48.20 She can't possibly get to it all but now all of a sudden, 00:04:48.23\00:04:50.42 she's going you know, very intensely 00:04:50.45\00:04:52.44 and I said, "Mom what are you doing?" 00:04:52.47\00:04:54.30 She said, "Well, the maid is coming." 00:04:54.33\00:04:56.20 And it seems strange to me. 00:04:56.23\00:04:58.01 That we would clean up before the maid came. 00:04:58.04\00:05:00.55 But that's exactly what people do. 00:05:00.58\00:05:01.95 They feel like they've got to clean up. 00:05:01.98\00:05:03.43 They've got to stir up that desire. 00:05:03.46\00:05:06.31 Friends, we cannot have 00:05:06.34\00:05:08.34 an interest and hunger for spiritual things 00:05:08.37\00:05:10.42 and genuine spiritual desire unless we first come to Jesus. 00:05:10.45\00:05:14.47 And then Jesus gives us 00:05:14.50\00:05:16.55 that conviction, that gift of repentance. 00:05:16.58\00:05:19.08 And then that leads 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.86 to the beautiful experience of forgiveness. 00:05:20.89\00:05:23.28 And then it doesn't end there 00:05:23.31\00:05:24.68 because after we receive that forgiveness. 00:05:24.71\00:05:26.88 It says, we become witnesses immediately, 00:05:26.91\00:05:31.10 so every Christian is a witness. 00:05:31.13\00:05:32.98 And we receive the Holy Spirit 00:05:33.01\00:05:35.72 which God gives to those who obey him. Obey him. 00:05:35.75\00:05:38.82 It reminds me of John 14:15 where Jesus said 00:05:38.85\00:05:42.67 "If you love Me, keep My commandments, 00:05:42.70\00:05:45.17 and I will pray the Father, 00:05:45.20\00:05:46.96 and He will send you another helper." 00:05:46.99\00:05:49.19 That's right. "The Holy Spirit." 00:05:49.22\00:05:50.59 So when we make the commitment to follow God. 00:05:50.62\00:05:53.69 He then gives the Holy Spirit in a fuller way 00:05:53.72\00:05:57.25 than the Holy Spirit was in our life 00:05:57.28\00:05:59.45 before bringing conviction to us. 00:05:59.48\00:06:01.24 But we received the Holy Spirit in a fuller way 00:06:01.27\00:06:03.47 when we make a commitment to follow him. 00:06:03.50\00:06:05.18 And that's what said here. 00:06:05.21\00:06:06.58 The only way the Holy Spirit 00:06:06.61\00:06:07.98 is going to fall on the church today in marked measure 00:06:08.01\00:06:11.55 is if we are surrendered to obedience to God. 00:06:11.58\00:06:15.10 That's right, and I think that's an important point there, Jim, 00:06:15.13\00:06:17.52 that we were talking about surrender or commitment. 00:06:17.55\00:06:19.42 Sometimes we read obedient and get the same thing. 00:06:19.45\00:06:21.59 Those who obey Him, 00:06:21.62\00:06:22.99 oh, I've got to start obeying and clean my act up. 00:06:23.02\00:06:25.14 But obedience is lot more about our attitude, our commitment. 00:06:25.17\00:06:29.39 And in this particular case those who have- 00:06:29.42\00:06:31.54 who choose to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:31.57\00:06:35.38 We'll receive the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:35.41\00:06:36.78 We'll receive the power to follow through. 00:06:36.81\00:06:38.67 And not only they'll receive the repentance 00:06:38.70\00:06:41.68 that's true sorrow for sin 00:06:41.71\00:06:43.24 and the power to follow through in your decisions. Amen. 00:06:43.27\00:06:45.76 Yeah, so that is very powerful. 00:06:45.79\00:06:47.24 Now, it's interesting that once again 00:06:47.27\00:06:50.10 what we see is an opportunity for repentance here. 00:06:50.13\00:06:54.40 An opportunity for the Jewish leaders to respond 00:06:54.43\00:06:57.63 and they do respond, but it says in verse 33. 00:06:57.66\00:06:59.79 "When they heard this, they were furious 00:06:59.82\00:07:03.52 and plotted to kill them." Wow. 00:07:03.55\00:07:07.15 And so you know, repeatedly we're finding this 00:07:07.18\00:07:10.66 in the apostles this was a- 00:07:10.69\00:07:12.75 this was kind of a dangerous job. 00:07:12.78\00:07:14.91 Right, it was a risky business preaching the gospel. 00:07:14.94\00:07:17.36 And it says that they were furious. 00:07:17.39\00:07:20.17 Now, my Bible has a marginal reading, 00:07:20.20\00:07:21.82 they were cut to the quick. 00:07:21.85\00:07:24.03 Once again, this is a word the Bible is using to taught, 00:07:24.06\00:07:26.52 to explain the conviction of the Holy Spirit. 00:07:26.55\00:07:28.35 They were convicted, 00:07:28.38\00:07:29.75 but it's really important for us to understand. 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.65 I guess, sometimes people get the idea 00:07:31.68\00:07:34.01 that if I'm convicted by the Holy Spirit. 00:07:34.04\00:07:36.08 Well, it's a Holy Spirit and he reaches through 00:07:36.11\00:07:37.58 and actually he's able to convict me. 00:07:37.61\00:07:39.60 Then that's all that's needed, 00:07:39.63\00:07:41.46 I'll automatically make the right decision, 00:07:41.49\00:07:43.68 but the Holy Spirit never forces us. 00:07:43.71\00:07:45.43 God never forces our decision. 00:07:45.46\00:07:47.27 He brings the conviction and leaves the decision to us. 00:07:47.30\00:07:50.17 And as a Holy Spirit brings conviction 00:07:50.20\00:07:51.97 and urges them to make the right decision, 00:07:52.00\00:07:53.84 we see that their response is far from a positive one. 00:07:53.87\00:07:58.07 They are- they are cut to the quick, 00:07:58.10\00:08:00.43 but they respond by wanting to kill the apostle, 00:08:00.46\00:08:02.96 silence the message. 00:08:02.99\00:08:04.67 And we have to be ever so careful. 00:08:04.70\00:08:06.83 You know, in on two notes here. 00:08:06.86\00:08:09.02 When we feel conviction 00:08:09.05\00:08:10.42 sometimes we feel something that makes us angry. 00:08:10.45\00:08:13.01 We can assume that the preacher must have said it wrong, 00:08:13.04\00:08:16.60 because it made me mad 00:08:16.63\00:08:18.00 and I don't think anybody ever got mad at Jesus. 00:08:18.03\00:08:20.30 Well, that's not true at all. That's right. 00:08:20.33\00:08:22.13 And if we look at scripture, 00:08:22.16\00:08:23.53 that very well may be my heart responding 00:08:23.56\00:08:26.80 to the Holy Spirit's conviction- In a wrong way. 00:08:26.83\00:08:29.28 In a wrong way. Negative way. 00:08:29.31\00:08:30.68 And so I need to be aware of that. 00:08:30.71\00:08:32.54 The other thing is when we are sharing the truth with others. 00:08:32.57\00:08:34.76 It's so common for us when I- 00:08:34.79\00:08:38.52 we share with a friend or a loved one 00:08:38.55\00:08:40.35 and they get upset or angry or hurt. 00:08:40.38\00:08:43.92 Like the rich young ruler went away sorrowful, 00:08:43.95\00:08:46.19 we assume that we must have done something wrong. 00:08:46.22\00:08:49.18 But it may very well be that we allow the Lord to use us 00:08:49.21\00:08:51.89 and something right happened. 00:08:51.92\00:08:53.29 And the conviction 00:08:53.32\00:08:54.69 of the Holy Spirit has come upon them. 00:08:54.72\00:08:56.09 So we need to recognize that, 00:08:56.12\00:08:57.49 when we're looking at conviction. That's Right. 00:08:57.52\00:08:58.89 Now, right here in this passage right after it says, 00:08:58.92\00:09:01.29 they're furious and they plotted to kill them. 00:09:01.32\00:09:05.22 Fortunately, as we keep reading, 00:09:05.25\00:09:06.89 there is a voice of reason there in the council 00:09:06.92\00:09:09.53 because a Pharisee named Gamaliel it says in verse 34. 00:09:09.56\00:09:14.19 A teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, 00:09:14.22\00:09:18.00 commanded them to put the apostles 00:09:18.03\00:09:19.41 outside for a little while. 00:09:19.44\00:09:21.38 And then he began to talk to the people. 00:09:21.41\00:09:23.31 He essentially said, you know, 00:09:23.34\00:09:25.37 we've had this kind of thing happened before, 00:09:25.40\00:09:27.25 where different ones have risen up and claims to, 00:09:27.28\00:09:30.58 you know, have the truth 00:09:30.61\00:09:31.98 and be able to lead us down the right path. 00:09:32.01\00:09:34.00 And they start a little uprising 00:09:34.03\00:09:35.92 and then it died out and nothing worked out. 00:09:35.95\00:09:38.90 And we need to be careful 00:09:38.93\00:09:40.35 and he makes that point very clear in verse 38. 00:09:40.38\00:09:43.78 "And now I say to you 00:09:43.81\00:09:45.18 keep away from these men and let them alone 00:09:45.21\00:09:47.38 for if this plan or this work is of men 00:09:47.41\00:09:50.96 it will come to nothing. 00:09:50.99\00:09:52.47 But if it is of God you cannot over throw it. 00:09:52.50\00:09:56.03 Lest you even be found to fight against God." 00:09:56.06\00:09:59.69 And I don't know exactly where Gamaliel went 00:09:59.72\00:10:02.62 in terms of how he responded to this. 00:10:02.65\00:10:04.18 But I can say that this particular response 00:10:04.21\00:10:08.35 was a helpful response for the apostle sake. 00:10:08.38\00:10:11.39 And I believe that God was orchestrating this 00:10:11.42\00:10:14.27 in order to preserve them to carry the gospel further. 00:10:14.30\00:10:17.17 That's right. And as we read this. 00:10:17.20\00:10:18.82 I can't help to think, you know, we need to be careful not to, 00:10:18.85\00:10:23.89 too quickly approve something that perhaps God has condemned. 00:10:23.92\00:10:29.77 Or too quickly condemn something 00:10:29.80\00:10:31.88 for fear that God may have approved it. That's right. 00:10:31.91\00:10:34.15 We need to be thoughtful 00:10:34.18\00:10:35.55 and make sure that it agrees with scripture. 00:10:35.58\00:10:37.10 Yeah, sometimes we got to let 00:10:37.13\00:10:38.50 both grow together until the harvest. 00:10:38.53\00:10:39.90 That's right, the wheat and the tares. 00:10:39.93\00:10:42.01 And so yeah, he gives very good counsel there 00:10:42.04\00:10:44.64 and unfortunately for the apostles 00:10:44.67\00:10:46.90 it says in verse 40 00:10:46.93\00:10:48.30 "And they agreed with him 00:10:48.33\00:10:49.76 and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them. 00:10:49.79\00:10:53.18 They commanded that they should not speak 00:10:53.21\00:10:55.11 in the name of Jesus and let them go. 00:10:55.14\00:10:58.50 So they departed from the presence of the council, 00:10:58.53\00:11:02.01 rejoicing that they were counted worthy to escape." 00:11:02.04\00:11:05.29 No, it didn't say that, does it? 00:11:05.32\00:11:08.03 "They were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. 00:11:08.06\00:11:11.45 And they daily in temple, and in every house, 00:11:11.48\00:11:13.08 they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus Christ." 00:11:13.11\00:11:15.76 So it's interesting here that you know, 00:11:15.79\00:11:18.07 sometimes we look at the deliverances. 00:11:18.10\00:11:20.21 Amidst, you look at the mighty miracles 00:11:20.24\00:11:22.23 and say, wow, that we want to be apostles, 00:11:22.26\00:11:24.23 but we don't take into accounts sometimes 00:11:24.26\00:11:26.29 that in the midst of it all, 00:11:26.32\00:11:27.69 God still allowed them to suffer. That's right. 00:11:27.72\00:11:29.43 And sometimes severely, they were beaten 00:11:29.46\00:11:31.45 and it's interesting that when they get out. 00:11:31.48\00:11:33.29 I mean they rejoice and we may say, 00:11:33.32\00:11:35.57 well, of course, they rejoiced, that they would let go. 00:11:35.60\00:11:37.44 No, they rejoiced, 00:11:37.47\00:11:38.84 that they were counted worthy to suffer. 00:11:38.87\00:11:40.46 And I think of statements and scripture 00:11:40.49\00:11:41.92 and the scripture is full of them, 00:11:41.95\00:11:43.32 then James says in his letter. 00:11:43.35\00:11:46.17 In James 1:2-3, "My brother encountered all joy 00:11:46.20\00:11:51.42 when you fall into various trials 00:11:51.45\00:11:52.91 because these trials produce your character." 00:11:52.94\00:11:56.13 They refine your character 00:11:56.16\00:11:57.53 and there're so many places in scriptures 00:11:57.56\00:11:59.45 they'll speak to us 00:11:59.48\00:12:00.85 of how trials are part of God's refining process 00:12:00.88\00:12:04.65 and we ought to rejoice 00:12:04.68\00:12:06.31 that we are found worthy to suffer for Jesus. 00:12:06.34\00:12:09.09 He will never let the suffering be more than we can bear. 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.51 It's always for our good. That's right. 00:12:11.54\00:12:13.73 And another thing about this particular suffering 00:12:13.76\00:12:16.48 after they beat them 00:12:16.51\00:12:17.88 and they talked about being counted worthy. 00:12:17.91\00:12:19.42 Notice what it says, 00:12:19.45\00:12:20.82 "They were counted worthy to suffer shame." Shame. 00:12:20.85\00:12:24.17 Shame, so it wasn't just that they suffered physical lashes, 00:12:24.20\00:12:29.58 but they suffered shame. 00:12:29.61\00:12:31.28 They were not well respected. 00:12:31.31\00:12:32.93 They lost their credibility, they lost their approval of man. 00:12:32.96\00:12:37.24 They lost their reputation. 00:12:37.27\00:12:39.29 And sometimes we seem to think that, 00:12:39.32\00:12:41.45 you know, we should be able to have both worlds. 00:12:41.48\00:12:44.47 Be an active godly Christian and at the same time 00:12:44.50\00:12:47.89 be looked upon, loved by the world. 00:12:47.92\00:12:50.58 And that's simply not the case. 00:12:50.61\00:12:52.04 They were counted worthy to suffer shame 00:12:52.07\00:12:54.05 and they rejoiced in that fact. 00:12:54.08\00:12:56.24 You look at verse 42 and it really is amazing, 00:12:56.27\00:12:59.95 it says, "And daily in the temple, 00:12:59.98\00:13:01.73 and in every house, they did not cease teaching 00:13:01.76\00:13:04.47 and preaching Jesus as the Christ." 00:13:04.50\00:13:07.19 So despite all the suffering it only stirred them to do more. 00:13:07.22\00:13:11.15 Sometimes we think that well, when things get hard. 00:13:11.18\00:13:13.77 When people get discouraged is because people are, 00:13:13.80\00:13:16.07 you know, giving them opposition. 00:13:16.10\00:13:18.06 More often than not, the reason people stop working 00:13:18.09\00:13:20.41 for the Lord is not because of opposition, 00:13:20.44\00:13:23.07 but it's because of complacency and prosperity. 00:13:23.10\00:13:26.48 They found that, that persecution 00:13:26.51\00:13:28.14 God allowed it to keep them pure 00:13:28.17\00:13:30.09 and they actually built in character 00:13:30.12\00:13:32.05 and were stronger for God as we saw. 00:13:32.08\00:13:34.68 Well, we've run out of time once again. 00:13:34.71\00:13:37.53 But we invite you back next time for "Books of the Book" 00:13:37.56\00:13:40.71 where we'll dive back in to the Book of Acts. 00:13:40.74\00:13:42.96
