Welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.30\00:00:22.67 I'm Pastor Mark Howard. 00:00:22.70\00:00:24.07 I'm here with my co-host, my brother Pastor Jim Howard 00:00:24.10\00:00:26.39 and we are studying the Book of Acts. 00:00:26.42\00:00:28.70 And we have been studying 00:00:28.73\00:00:30.10 some really powerful things in the Book of Acts. Right. 00:00:30.13\00:00:32.05 That power is a word that could be used 00:00:32.08\00:00:34.27 synonymously with the Book of Acts. 00:00:34.30\00:00:35.67 We see the power of the Holy Spirit 00:00:35.70\00:00:37.30 and the power of the apostles 00:00:37.33\00:00:38.99 in their cooperation with the Holy Spirit. 00:00:39.02\00:00:41.87 Now in our last study, we were in Acts Chapter 5 00:00:41.90\00:00:45.69 and we looked at the judgment that came upon the early church 00:00:45.72\00:00:49.33 on Ananias and Sapphira because of their hypocrisy. 00:00:49.36\00:00:53.31 And it's interesting that that judgment 00:00:53.34\00:00:57.58 actually ended up in a very positive outcome for the church, 00:00:57.61\00:01:02.51 maybe contrary to what a person would think. 00:01:02.54\00:01:04.30 But before we go right back in the scripture 00:01:04.33\00:01:06.10 and pick up where we had left off, 00:01:06.13\00:01:08.43 I'd like to start with a word of prayer 00:01:08.46\00:01:10.26 and ask God to bless our time in His word. 00:01:10.29\00:01:12.73 Father in Heaven, we do thank You for the word of truth. 00:01:12.76\00:01:18.42 We ask now Lord that You would guide us 00:01:18.45\00:01:20.36 in our study of Your word. 00:01:20.39\00:01:21.97 We ask You in Jesus name, amen. Amen. 00:01:22.00\00:01:25.07 It really grabbed my attention last time, Jim, in Acts 5:12-13, 00:01:25.10\00:01:30.45 after the judgment against Ananias and Sapphira, 00:01:30.48\00:01:34.73 where it says "And through the hands of the apostles 00:01:34.76\00:01:37.72 many signs and wonders were done among the people. 00:01:37.75\00:01:39.97 And they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch. 00:01:40.00\00:01:42.83 Yet none of the rest dared joined them, 00:01:42.86\00:01:45.93 but the people esteemed them highly 00:01:45.96\00:01:47.92 and believers were increasingly added to the Lord, 00:01:47.95\00:01:50.72 multitudes of both men and women." 00:01:50.75\00:01:53.03 And so the church was growing. 00:01:53.06\00:01:54.92 And this once again brought 00:01:54.95\00:01:57.14 the wrath of the religious leaders. 00:01:57.17\00:01:59.55 They were not happy with this burgeoning Church. 00:01:59.58\00:02:03.37 And so in verse 17 we're gonna pick up 00:02:03.40\00:02:06.59 it says, "Then the high priest rose up, 00:02:06.62\00:02:09.28 and all of those who were with him," 00:02:09.31\00:02:11.79 which is the sect of the Sadducees 00:02:11.82\00:02:13.97 and "they were filled with indignation. 00:02:14.00\00:02:17.09 And laid their hands on the apostles, 00:02:17.12\00:02:19.63 and put them in the common prison." 00:02:19.66\00:02:21.14 Now we've seen this before, right, 00:02:21.17\00:02:22.55 in Acts Chapter 4. That's right. 00:02:22.58\00:02:24.18 Where it says, "They came upon the apostles Peter and John, 00:02:24.21\00:02:28.64 here they were filled indignation, 00:02:28.67\00:02:30.28 they laid hands on them." It is said that in chapter 4. 00:02:30.31\00:02:33.05 Once again they can't refute the truth that's being preached 00:02:33.08\00:02:37.17 and so they resort to physical manipulation 00:02:37.20\00:02:40.34 and, you know, force. That's right. 00:02:40.37\00:02:43.30 Force, you know, different measures 00:02:43.33\00:02:44.93 and take them and they put them in, 00:02:44.96\00:02:46.47 the Bible says, "the common prison." 00:02:46.50\00:02:48.60 Now what's interesting is what comes next. 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.94 It says, "But at night the angel of the Lord 00:02:50.97\00:02:54.93 opened the prison doors and brought them out, 00:02:54.96\00:02:57.46 and said, 'Go, stand in the temple 00:02:57.49\00:02:59.96 and speak to the people all the words of this life.' 00:02:59.99\00:03:04.30 And when they heard that, 00:03:04.33\00:03:05.94 they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. 00:03:05.97\00:03:08.96 But the high priest and those with him 00:03:08.99\00:03:11.39 came and called and-" sorry, 00:03:11.42\00:03:13.51 "called the council together, with all the elders of Israel 00:03:13.54\00:03:17.97 and sent to the prison to have them brought." 00:03:18.00\00:03:22.07 You know, when I read this passage 00:03:22.10\00:03:24.75 it seems like the Pharisees, 00:03:24.78\00:03:27.00 the high priests and the Pharisees, 00:03:27.03\00:03:28.43 they have this assumed good reason for taking these men. 00:03:28.46\00:03:35.47 They're laying their hands on them. 00:03:35.50\00:03:36.87 It appears that they are trying to stand for truth 00:03:36.90\00:03:39.44 and stamp out something that would 00:03:39.47\00:03:41.60 point people away from the true God, 00:03:41.63\00:03:43.45 away from the true religion and- 00:03:43.48\00:03:46.35 Yeah, they seem to see very noble. 00:03:46.38\00:03:48.32 It seems noble what they're doing 00:03:48.35\00:03:49.72 if we were to really take it from the people's viewpoint. 00:03:49.75\00:03:53.28 But when you look closely, 00:03:53.31\00:03:54.86 there is a little bit of an indicator in this verse 17 00:03:54.89\00:03:58.24 that I think it says something different. 00:03:58.27\00:04:00.21 At the end of verse 17 it says, 00:04:00.24\00:04:01.82 "They were filled with indignation." 00:04:01.85\00:04:04.26 And that word indignation has a marginal reading. 00:04:04.29\00:04:06.88 So it-in the margin says or jealousy. 00:04:06.91\00:04:11.50 They were filled with jealousy. 00:04:11.53\00:04:14.26 And that sort of gives you 00:04:14.29\00:04:15.66 a little bit of a different picture as to what was happening 00:04:15.69\00:04:18.55 and what was potentially going on 00:04:18.58\00:04:19.95 in the hearts of these leaders. 00:04:19.98\00:04:21.55 As we look in verse 13 earlier in the chapter, 00:04:21.58\00:04:26.30 where you had quoted from Mark 00:04:26.33\00:04:27.99 it says, "Yet none of the rest dared to join them, 00:04:28.02\00:04:30.73 but the people esteemed them," 00:04:30.76\00:04:32.86 that is the apostles, how? Highly. 00:04:32.89\00:04:36.70 The people esteemed the apostles highly. 00:04:36.73\00:04:39.56 You can imagine if you were one of the high priests, 00:04:39.59\00:04:42.36 and among these leaders- 00:04:42.39\00:04:43.77 there's no miracles coming from you. 00:04:43.80\00:04:46.17 There is no miraculous happenings, 00:04:46.20\00:04:48.91 there's no clear reasoning from the scripture. 00:04:48.94\00:04:50.99 Or even there's- I say a powerful preaching. 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.58 That's right. 00:04:53.61\00:04:54.98 And as a result they've got nothing to gain any attraction, 00:04:55.01\00:05:00.57 nothing to attract the people to them 00:05:00.60\00:05:02.50 and the truth be known, 00:05:02.53\00:05:03.99 that's what they wanted. 00:05:04.02\00:05:05.87 They wanted that attraction. 00:05:05.90\00:05:07.44 They wanted to be known among the people 00:05:07.47\00:05:09.86 as those who were the best expositors of scripture, 00:05:09.89\00:05:13.11 those who knew the authority of God and what was right. 00:05:13.14\00:05:17.33 And here we find that if the truth be known, 00:05:17.36\00:05:20.54 they were revealing that it wasn't about the message 00:05:20.57\00:05:25.11 that the apostles were sharing. 00:05:25.14\00:05:26.92 But underneath that there was a love for praise. 00:05:26.95\00:05:31.60 A love for notoriety, a love for approval. 00:05:31.63\00:05:36.32 You'll remember that in the Gospels it said that 00:05:36.35\00:05:38.94 "they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." 00:05:38.97\00:05:44.35 And you know, I can't help but think that 00:05:44.38\00:05:46.49 this speaks through the heart of humanity, every one of us. 00:05:46.52\00:05:51.18 You know, sometimes we do something worthwhile but then 00:05:51.21\00:05:56.11 somebody else does something worthwhile in the Church 00:05:56.14\00:05:58.37 and they receive great attention. 00:05:58.40\00:06:01.14 We do something important at work, 00:06:01.17\00:06:03.31 but somebody else does something, 00:06:03.34\00:06:05.16 that doesn't seem to be quite as grand and yet they receive, 00:06:05.19\00:06:09.54 you know, the raise or the promotion. 00:06:09.57\00:06:12.48 And deep in our hearts we have to wrestle with the fact 00:06:12.51\00:06:15.64 that what the Pharisees had here and the high priests, 00:06:15.67\00:06:19.50 they had something that we struggle with as well. 00:06:19.53\00:06:23.05 And unfortunately, they refused to acknowledge it. 00:06:23.08\00:06:27.52 They tried to cover it up by making it an issue of the error 00:06:27.55\00:06:33.03 of what these apostles were doing 00:06:33.06\00:06:36.46 and that reveals something. 00:06:36.49\00:06:37.86 It means that sometimes what seems to be 00:06:37.89\00:06:40.54 the issue is not the issue. 00:06:40.57\00:06:43.21 Sometimes when we argue against something 00:06:43.24\00:06:45.94 or when somebody challenges some truth of scripture, 00:06:45.97\00:06:50.81 it's not because they don't see the truth of it, 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.44 but it's because deep in their heart 00:06:53.47\00:06:55.57 there is a consequence for accepting that truth. 00:06:55.60\00:06:58.28 It may be a lesser notoriety. 00:06:58.31\00:07:00.49 It may be, you know, perhaps a change in their life. 00:07:00.52\00:07:04.82 And so to avoid that 00:07:04.85\00:07:06.90 they make it sound as if it's not true. 00:07:06.93\00:07:10.04 Then we have to be careful that our hearts don't cause us 00:07:10.07\00:07:14.72 to come up with wrong conclusions about scripture. 00:07:14.75\00:07:16.90 Sure, in other words there's a tendency 00:07:16.93\00:07:19.66 to want to say that the reason I'm resisting this 00:07:19.69\00:07:23.38 is because I want to follow the truth. 00:07:23.41\00:07:25.63 A noble purpose. Right. 00:07:25.66\00:07:27.05 And this isn't truth but when the reality may be in my heart 00:07:27.08\00:07:31.06 that it's not about truth at all, 00:07:31.09\00:07:32.89 it's about me counting the cost 00:07:32.92\00:07:34.44 and realizing that if I follow that 00:07:34.47\00:07:35.84 I'm gonna lose my notoriety, I'm gonna lose my influence- 00:07:35.87\00:07:40.60 or I'm already jealous about the influence 00:07:40.63\00:07:43.36 as you're saying and that's very, very powerful point. 00:07:43.39\00:07:48.00 You know, we have to consider that today 00:07:48.03\00:07:50.29 that is an attribute of human nature 00:07:50.32\00:07:52.73 and it may be very much the case today 00:07:52.76\00:07:55.86 that religious leaders today can fall into the same trap 00:07:55.89\00:08:00.17 that we see them falling into here 00:08:00.20\00:08:02.27 of saying that they're fighting against something 00:08:02.30\00:08:05.80 and they're saying well, that's heresy 00:08:05.83\00:08:07.24 and I just want to guard my flock from that, 00:08:07.27\00:08:09.89 when the reality may be it has nothing to do 00:08:09.92\00:08:12.04 with truth or heresy, it has everything to do 00:08:12.07\00:08:15.04 with reputation and that jealousy. 00:08:15.07\00:08:17.48 Yes, it's very strong. 00:08:17.51\00:08:18.88 Well, and you were taking us 00:08:18.91\00:08:20.28 down the path of verses 19 and 20 00:08:20.31\00:08:22.32 and some of the experiences. 00:08:22.35\00:08:23.72 Yeah, they sent them to prison and- 00:08:23.75\00:08:26.39 the Bible tells us in verse 21 that, 00:08:26.42\00:08:31.09 when they called the council together, 00:08:31.12\00:08:34.14 "the high priest and those with him called the council together 00:08:34.17\00:08:37.81 and all the elders of Israel and sent to the prison 00:08:37.84\00:08:40.43 to have them brought." 00:08:40.46\00:08:41.83 Okay, so they have imprisoned them, 00:08:41.86\00:08:43.48 they're indignant, they took them by violent hands, 00:08:43.51\00:08:46.24 and so they're all worked up. 00:08:46.27\00:08:47.75 They put him in the prison 00:08:47.78\00:08:49.15 and you can only imagine the discussion, 00:08:49.18\00:08:50.55 "What are we gonna do with these guys?" 00:08:50.58\00:08:51.95 In a rage, now call them from the prison 00:08:51.98\00:08:54.67 and we're gonna really thrash them 00:08:54.70\00:08:56.68 and it's- the next part is powerful. 00:08:56.71\00:08:58.76 Verse 22 says, "When the officers came 00:08:58.79\00:09:02.12 and did not find them in the prison, 00:09:02.15\00:09:05.53 they returned and reported." 00:09:05.56\00:09:06.93 I mean, you've got a picture, 00:09:06.96\00:09:09.71 you know, an angel of the Lord comes 00:09:09.74\00:09:11.62 and commands them. 00:09:11.65\00:09:13.65 "I want you to go out and I want you to go back to the temple 00:09:13.68\00:09:15.93 and begin preaching." That's right. 00:09:15.96\00:09:17.73 So what do you do? What you do? 00:09:17.76\00:09:19.78 What the Lord says. 00:09:19.81\00:09:21.18 So when the guards come, everybody is unaware of this 00:09:21.21\00:09:23.55 but the apostles themselves 00:09:23.58\00:09:24.95 who now are back in the temple preaching, 00:09:24.98\00:09:26.86 the religious leaders think that they have them 00:09:26.89\00:09:28.82 securely locked up. 00:09:28.85\00:09:30.22 So they send the guards and when the guards go, 00:09:30.25\00:09:33.43 they reported, it says, they said, 00:09:33.46\00:09:37.12 "When we opened the doors" verse 23, 00:09:37.15\00:09:39.85 "indeed we found the prison shut securely, 00:09:39.88\00:09:43.30 and the guard standing outside before the doors." 00:09:43.33\00:09:45.98 Now something that our viewers need to understand here is 00:09:46.01\00:09:48.51 in the Roman culture, 00:09:48.54\00:09:50.61 those guards had to answer for their prisoners 00:09:50.64\00:09:55.26 at the cost of their own life many times. 00:09:55.29\00:09:57.35 So if their prisoner was found escaped, 00:09:57.38\00:10:01.02 then that guard could be executed 00:10:01.05\00:10:02.89 and so they took their work very seriously. 00:10:02.92\00:10:05.37 So here they are posted, 00:10:05.40\00:10:06.93 the guards are still outside of the cell, apparently, 00:10:06.96\00:10:12.58 totally unaware, 00:10:12.61\00:10:13.98 thinking their prisoners are still in there, 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.01 these men come and they say, okay, let's get the guys 00:10:16.04\00:10:18.38 and they go in and expecting to find them in the cell. 00:10:18.41\00:10:22.26 They said, they opened the doors 00:10:22.29\00:10:24.63 "And when we opened them, we found no one inside." 00:10:24.66\00:10:27.76 Verse 24 it says, "Now when the high priest, 00:10:27.79\00:10:29.64 the captain of the temple 00:10:29.67\00:10:31.04 and the chief priest heard these things, 00:10:31.07\00:10:32.54 they wondered what the outcome would be." 00:10:32.57\00:10:34.53 Where are we gonna find them, right? 00:10:34.56\00:10:37.04 Verse 25, "So one came and told them, 00:10:37.07\00:10:38.99 saying, look, the men who you put in prison 00:10:39.02\00:10:41.42 are standing in the temple 00:10:41.45\00:10:43.67 and teaching the people." Unbelievable. 00:10:43.70\00:10:46.02 I just tried to put myself there. 00:10:46.05\00:10:47.75 They're just, of course, totally beside themselves, 00:10:47.78\00:10:50.15 how did these guys get out? 00:10:50.18\00:10:51.60 There they are in the temple preaching again, 00:10:51.63\00:10:54.49 that which the rulers are trying to stamp out. 00:10:54.52\00:10:56.90 You know, you think that 00:10:56.93\00:10:58.30 if someone broke free from a prison, 00:10:58.33\00:11:00.52 they would flee to another country 00:11:00.55\00:11:02.70 or they would flee to somewhere 00:11:02.73\00:11:06.33 where no one could possibly find them. 00:11:06.36\00:11:08.53 And yet here they flee to the one place 00:11:08.56\00:11:10.57 where they're obviously gonna be found. 00:11:10.60\00:11:12.51 They know they're gonna be found again 00:11:12.54\00:11:14.17 but they're obedient to the voice of the Lord. 00:11:14.20\00:11:17.09 That's right and now here we have Peter 00:11:17.12\00:11:18.62 and the apostles not just Peter and John, 00:11:18.65\00:11:20.46 but Peter and John has been before- 00:11:20.49\00:11:22.13 have been before this group before, 00:11:22.16\00:11:24.90 now they're in the temple again. 00:11:24.93\00:11:26.30 And so it says in verse 27, 00:11:26.33\00:11:27.70 when they had- and verse 26 rather, 00:11:27.73\00:11:29.78 "The captain went with the officers 00:11:29.81\00:11:32.26 and brought them without violence." 00:11:32.29\00:11:34.46 Notice here, "for they feared the people lest 00:11:34.49\00:11:36.91 they, the rulers, should be stoned." Wow. 00:11:36.94\00:11:39.56 This is very interesting to me and then in verse 27, 00:11:39.59\00:11:41.94 "When they have brought them, 00:11:41.97\00:11:43.34 they set them before the council." 00:11:43.37\00:11:44.74 You remember where they set them before? 00:11:44.77\00:11:46.88 When we were back with Peter and John in Acts 4. 00:11:46.91\00:11:49.82 It was in the midst, they were there to intimidate. 00:11:49.85\00:11:52.72 Things have changed, now they're afraid. 00:11:52.75\00:11:55.32 They're afraid of the people, they're afraid of the influence 00:11:55.35\00:11:57.34 and things have changed with the leaders, 00:11:57.37\00:11:58.85 now they see the power of influence of the early church. 00:11:58.88\00:12:01.57 So they threaten them, they say in verse 28, 00:12:01.60\00:12:04.81 "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? 00:12:04.84\00:12:07.99 And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine." 00:12:08.02\00:12:11.94 At which point the apostles could say, thank you. 00:12:11.97\00:12:14.83 Amen. Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:12:14.86\00:12:16.71 That's what we've been trying to do. That's right. 00:12:16.74\00:12:18.97 And then they said, "And look, 00:12:19.00\00:12:21.16 you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine 00:12:21.19\00:12:22.56 and you intend to bring this man's blood on us." 00:12:22.59\00:12:25.83 And so now they're trying to take the conviction, 00:12:25.86\00:12:27.97 their feeling and put it off on the apostles 00:12:28.00\00:12:32.00 at-you guys are trying to make us guilty of something. 00:12:32.03\00:12:36.05 But what's interesting to me 00:12:36.08\00:12:37.45 is if we go back to Matthew 27 00:12:37.48\00:12:39.58 and we look at the words of the people there 00:12:39.61\00:12:41.89 in Matthew 27:24. 00:12:41.92\00:12:44.40 It says, "When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, 00:12:44.43\00:12:47.41 but rather that a tumult was rising, 00:12:47.44\00:12:49.88 he took water and washed his hands 00:12:49.91\00:12:51.52 before the multitude saying, 00:12:51.55\00:12:52.95 'I am innocent of the blood of this just person you see to it 00:12:52.98\00:12:56.47 and all the people answered and said, 00:12:56.50\00:12:58.33 his blood be on us and on our children-'" 00:12:58.36\00:13:01.32 Just before the crucifixion. 00:13:01.35\00:13:02.93 That was their own request 00:13:02.96\00:13:06.05 and so here when that conviction comes home, 00:13:06.08\00:13:08.41 when they have to answer for what they've said before- 00:13:08.44\00:13:11.96 now all of a sudden they don't want to be accountable for it. 00:13:11.99\00:13:14.03 They want to put it off on the apostles 00:13:14.06\00:13:15.57 and it's all the apostles' fault. 00:13:15.60\00:13:17.40 But the reality is they themselves had made that claim 00:13:17.43\00:13:20.55 and now they had to answer for it 00:13:20.58\00:13:21.95 and Peter is making them answer for it here. 00:13:21.98\00:13:24.28 And they are irate and there- 00:13:24.31\00:13:27.24 Peter's going to respond to this, 00:13:27.27\00:13:29.03 but I don't want to jump into that 00:13:29.06\00:13:30.81 until after we take our break, 00:13:30.84\00:13:32.22 that response here- he's responsive. 00:13:32.25\00:13:33.98 Once again it's powerful as we would expect. 00:13:34.01\00:13:36.38 And so we're gonna take a break 00:13:36.41\00:13:37.78 and we'll be back in a few minutes. 00:13:37.81\00:13:39.18 Hope you join us there 00:13:39.21\00:13:40.58 as we dive back into the Book of Acts. 00:13:40.61\00:13:41.98
