Welcome back to Books of the Book. We are studying the book 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.69 of Acts and we actually in Acts chapter 5 looking at the story 00:00:04.72\00:00:08.24 of Ananias and Sapphira, the swift judgment that was brought 00:00:08.28\00:00:12.68 upon them and the overall act of hypocrisy. Before the break we 00:00:12.71\00:00:16.83 had said that there's a lot Jesus has said in the scriptures 00:00:16.87\00:00:20.41 about hypocrisy. We're actually going to go and look at a place 00:00:20.44\00:00:25.47 in Luke chapter 12 and it says in Luke chapter 12 and verse 1, 00:00:25.50\00:00:30.50 In the meantime when an innumerable multitude of people 00:00:30.53\00:00:34.16 had gathered together so that they trampled one another, he 00:00:34.20\00:00:37.59 began to say to his disciples first of all, Beware of the 00:00:37.63\00:00:41.76 leaven of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. And this is 00:00:41.79\00:00:45.85 interesting. When we talk about hypocrisy we talked about it 00:00:45.89\00:00:48.68 before the break, the literal word in the Greek means an actor 00:00:48.72\00:00:52.25 Of course, it's one reason that I hear a lot of people say that 00:00:52.28\00:00:55.46 they don't go to church. Well I don't go to church because there 00:00:55.50\00:00:58.36 are too many hypocrites in the church, people say. Well where 00:00:58.39\00:01:01.19 else would you expect to find a hypocrite. Because a hypocrite 00:01:01.23\00:01:04.58 is somebody who says one thing and does another. And if they're 00:01:04.62\00:01:07.94 saying one thing, if they're a false Christian, you would 00:01:07.97\00:01:10.10 expect them to be in the church because they're saying one thing 00:01:10.14\00:01:13.27 and doing another. So the idea of hypocrisy is something that I 00:01:13.30\00:01:16.59 think everybody is aware of. But Jesus brings something else out 00:01:16.63\00:01:19.89 here when he talks about hypocrisy. He says, beware of 00:01:19.92\00:01:22.89 the leaven of hypocrisy. And leaven is a word that you could 00:01:22.93\00:01:28.07 also say yeast. You know, if somebody's baking break or some 00:01:28.10\00:01:32.50 kind of yeast-raised product it only takes a little bit of yeast 00:01:32.53\00:01:37.04 into the dough to spread through that whole lump of dough and 00:01:37.08\00:01:40.69 some of our readers may recall Paul saying that when he talks 00:01:40.72\00:01:44.47 about how a little leaven leavens the whole lump. It only 00:01:44.50\00:01:48.22 takes a little bit. Jesus says that hypocrisy is of that same 00:01:48.25\00:01:52.64 nature; it only takes a little bit and it spreads everywhere. 00:01:52.67\00:01:57.47 The way that we see that a lot is when somebody else that we 00:01:57.50\00:02:01.67 know in the church, for example, somebody else who professes to 00:02:01.70\00:02:05.84 be a Christian is being unfaithful. Then it's easy for 00:02:05.87\00:02:12.85 us to say well if they're doing that and they're not doing this, 00:02:12.89\00:02:17.54 they're not really sacrificing, why should I sacrifice so much? 00:02:17.57\00:02:21.02 I mean, I already sacrifice more that them, why should I knock 00:02:21.05\00:02:24.47 myself out. And anyway, there tends to be this comparing 00:02:24.50\00:02:27.72 ourselves among ourselves and Jesus is speaking here of the 00:02:27.76\00:02:31.75 nature of hypocrisy that when there's hypocrisy in the church 00:02:31.79\00:02:35.75 it just seems to spread like wildfire and weaken the 00:02:35.78\00:02:40.12 influence and the power of the church. 00:02:40.15\00:02:41.52 You know, I'm thinking about those who first are baptized and 00:02:41.55\00:02:45.08 become members of the church, they're on fire for the Lord, 00:02:45.11\00:02:49.38 their conversion experience is powerful and then they come into 00:02:49.41\00:02:53.65 an established church, an established body of believers, 00:02:53.68\00:02:57.23 and if that established body of believers has a complacent 00:02:57.26\00:03:01.92 atmosphere, if when it comes time to go and to witness for 00:03:01.95\00:03:06.78 Christ or be involved in some evangelistic outreach, people 00:03:06.82\00:03:10.85 say you know I'm busy, I'm sorry I can't do that, or they don't 00:03:10.89\00:03:14.96 want to invest or be involved then before long that on-fire 00:03:15.00\00:03:20.70 member begins to see that you can be a member in good standing 00:03:20.73\00:03:26.40 it could be leaders in the church who are having this 00:03:26.43\00:03:30.68 complacent type of spirit and before long they sort of become 00:03:30.72\00:03:35.71 they acclimate they become like that group. That's what I think 00:03:35.75\00:03:40.71 is being said here. The leaven of the Pharisees, which is 00:03:40.74\00:03:45.45 hypocrisy, simply means that hypocrisy has that power in it 00:03:45.49\00:03:50.57 that it will make others have that same type of incongruent 00:03:50.61\00:03:55.66 life versus the profession. 00:03:55.69\00:03:58.17 Yeah and that's very different from the spirit of the early 00:03:58.21\00:04:00.93 church where we see the power being in the early church. 00:04:00.97\00:04:03.39 I think you were going to talk about that a little bit. 00:04:03.42\00:04:09.14 We talked in a previous program about chapter 2 where right 00:04:09.17\00:04:14.82 after the initial conversion of the 3000 on the day of Pentecost 00:04:14.86\00:04:18.67 it says that they continued steadfastly in the apostles 00:04:18.70\00:04:22.18 doctrine and fellowship and the breaking of bread and in prayer. 00:04:22.22\00:04:26.47 That's in Acts 2 verse 42. And the Lord was adding daily to the 00:04:26.50\00:04:30.72 church those who were being saved. You get this sense that 00:04:30.75\00:04:35.11 the church serving with gladness and simplicity of heart was 00:04:35.14\00:04:38.65 invested, the people of the church were totally invested. 00:04:38.69\00:04:42.02 It only is natural that that would be the case. You know, it 00:04:42.06\00:04:45.83 says the leaven of the Pharisees was hypocrisy and the Pharisees 00:04:45.87\00:04:49.61 as a general rule were the adversaries to the church. The 00:04:49.64\00:04:54.26 church represented those who in the face of opposition were 00:04:54.30\00:04:58.81 standing true. Persecution caused those who maybe would 00:04:58.85\00:05:02.75 be hypocritical to be washed away because who would want to 00:05:02.78\00:05:06.12 be professing something that would require so much sacrifice. 00:05:06.15\00:05:10.49 So there seemed to be a true, pure faith amongst the church 00:05:10.52\00:05:14.52 and you see that all through the beginning of the book of Acts 00:05:14.56\00:05:18.16 until you get here to chapter 5. When you get to chapter 5 and 00:05:18.19\00:05:21.31 you have this experience of Ananias and Sapphira it's a far 00:05:21.34\00:05:24.63 different thing. Here we see hypocrisy and I believe that's 00:05:24.66\00:05:28.90 part of the reason why we see God giving such a swift judgment 00:05:28.94\00:05:31.85 here. You know, you look in the Old Testament and there are many 00:05:31.88\00:05:35.34 different places where we see swift judgments that were given 00:05:35.38\00:05:39.24 and we may not always understand all of the reasons, but we 00:05:39.27\00:05:43.08 recognize that the holiness of God was there blended with the 00:05:43.12\00:05:46.56 mercy of God and he was doing what was right. I believe we 00:05:46.60\00:05:50.90 need to look at this the same way. The reality is that God was 00:05:50.93\00:05:55.20 being merciful to this early church by giving this swift 00:05:55.23\00:05:59.80 judgment, because if Ananias and Sapphira had gone unchecked and 00:05:59.84\00:06:04.77 others had begun to take of that same spirit before long the 00:06:04.80\00:06:09.36 power that we see in the book of Acts would be gone and those who 00:06:09.40\00:06:13.73 felt that they had salvation may find that they were in danger 00:06:13.76\00:06:18.06 of losing their salvation because they didn't have a 00:06:18.09\00:06:20.40 saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. You look in verse 11. 00:06:20.44\00:06:26.24 We read, so great fear came upon all the church and upon all who 00:06:26.28\00:06:31.91 heard these things. You get this sense that because of this it 00:06:31.94\00:06:38.05 kept hypocrisy from spreading rampant. But yet as I'm reading 00:06:38.09\00:06:43.50 the story I think to myself, I wonder what would happen today 00:06:43.53\00:06:48.31 if the same judgment that came to Ananias and Sapphira came to 00:06:48.34\00:06:53.09 all of us when we had that hypocritical spirit or when we 00:06:53.12\00:06:58.21 claimed one thing or pledged one thing and did another. I can't 00:06:58.25\00:07:03.36 help but think that God would have us to learn something from 00:07:03.40\00:07:07.26 the experience of the past so that we don't have to go through 00:07:07.29\00:07:11.12 a similar judgment at the end of time. 00:07:11.15\00:07:13.23 That's right. It's interesting also, Jim, the initial thought 00:07:13.27\00:07:18.50 that I have is wow the church the numbers the membership 00:07:18.53\00:07:21.24 would be cut in probably more than half if that kind of 00:07:21.27\00:07:24.65 judgment was visited and yet that's not what happened here. 00:07:24.69\00:07:28.29 It says the believers, in verse 14, were increasingly added to 00:07:28.32\00:07:33.03 the Lord, multitudes of both men and women. So the church grew 00:07:33.07\00:07:37.23 as a result of this judgment. I like the point that you make 00:07:37.26\00:07:41.09 that this was a merciful move from God because here's the 00:07:41.13\00:07:44.96 thing. When we're talking about hypocrisy, hypocrisy is not 00:07:45.00\00:07:49.30 Christianity. There is no way, shape or form of hypocrisy that 00:07:49.33\00:07:53.47 is Christianity. So Jesus said that hypocrisy is like leaven, 00:07:53.50\00:07:57.74 it spreads and the implication is if you allow it it's going to 00:07:57.78\00:08:01.99 spread everywhere and if it spreads everywhere it will 00:08:02.02\00:08:04.84 make the church completely impotent, no power in the church 00:08:04.88\00:08:08.38 One thing that that makes me think of is what we see in the 00:08:08.42\00:08:12.38 early church primarily is the spread of the gospel and the 00:08:12.41\00:08:16.06 implication would be this: If we allow hypocrisy in the church 00:08:16.09\00:08:19.27 then we're going to see that the spread of the gospel will be 00:08:19.31\00:08:23.03 severely hindered. I hate to see it but what do we see today in 00:08:23.07\00:08:26.96 the church. I mean, the idea of witnessing among Christians is 00:08:27.00\00:08:30.43 now relegated to two or three people who are specially gifted 00:08:30.47\00:08:33.26 to do that and the rest of us just kind of go and take our 00:08:33.30\00:08:37.08 place in the pews. We see that with much hypocrisy there is 00:08:37.11\00:08:41.02 little mission anymore. I suppose more could be said, but 00:08:41.05\00:08:44.89 it's interesting as we see what the result was of this judgment 00:08:44.93\00:08:48.46 in verse 12. We looked at verse 14 but in verse 12 it says, and 00:08:48.49\00:08:51.99 through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders 00:08:52.02\00:08:54.33 were done among the people and they were all with one accord in 00:08:54.37\00:08:59.80 Solomon's porch yet none of the rest dared join them. But the 00:08:59.84\00:09:04.44 people esteemed them highly. In other words, after this judgment 00:09:04.48\00:09:09.05 those who knew that they were not willing or ready to 00:09:09.08\00:09:12.04 wholeheartedly commit didn't even feign it, didn't even 00:09:12.07\00:09:14.96 attempt it, didn't even try it, didn't even think about saying 00:09:15.00\00:09:19.28 well I'll join the church and I'll get rid of some of my 00:09:19.31\00:09:22.58 divided heart later. No, they didn't even dare join because 00:09:22.62\00:09:25.59 they didn't want to be in the shoes of Ananias and Sapphira. 00:09:25.63\00:09:29.09 That's exactly right. Wow! That probably kept the church pure. 00:09:29.12\00:09:32.55 At least for a period of time it kept the church pure. 00:09:32.59\00:09:35.05 You know what. We have a little more time so I'd like to read 00:09:35.09\00:09:38.99 this next passage here as we continue in verse 14 and high 00:09:39.03\00:09:42.97 light something there from verses 14 to 16. It says, And 00:09:43.00\00:09:46.20 believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes 00:09:46.24\00:09:49.39 of both men and women so that they brought the sick out into 00:09:49.43\00:09:52.64 the streets and laid them on beds and couches that at least 00:09:52.68\00:09:56.66 the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. Also 00:09:56.70\00:10:00.32 a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem 00:10:00.36\00:10:03.51 bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean 00:10:03.55\00:10:07.25 spirits and they were all healed Wow! this is some miraculous 00:10:07.29\00:10:10.68 healing we see here in the early church. Even the shadow of Peter 00:10:10.72\00:10:14.08 brings about this type of healing. Sometimes we wonder 00:10:14.11\00:10:18.35 well do we just not have faith in the church today, because we 00:10:18.38\00:10:21.70 don't see the same type of frequency and intensity of 00:10:21.74\00:10:25.52 supernatural phenomena and miracles that we saw here in 00:10:25.55\00:10:29.26 the early church. I'd like to suggest that while there may be 00:10:29.30\00:10:32.97 some measure of truth to that I believe it's also true that 00:10:33.01\00:10:36.81 God was establishing the credibility of this early church 00:10:36.85\00:10:40.50 He was making clear, marked manifestations of the Spirit of 00:10:40.53\00:10:44.30 God to establish this church that was just beginning at 120 00:10:44.34\00:10:48.35 and just beginning to grow and because of these miraculous 00:10:48.39\00:10:52.09 signs and wonders that attended the preaching of the apostles, 00:10:52.12\00:10:55.79 we see the church growing in great numbers. 00:10:55.83\00:10:57.93 That's right. And it makes me think of Jesus' command in Mark 00:10:57.97\00:11:01.47 chapter 16. As he's giving his great commission he says in Mark 00:11:01.50\00:11:05.25 16 and verse 15, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to 00:11:05.28\00:11:08.70 every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, 00:11:08.73\00:11:12.41 but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs 00:11:12.44\00:11:16.52 will follow those who believe. In my name they will cast out 00:11:16.56\00:11:20.61 demons, they will speak with new tongues, they will take up 00:11:20.64\00:11:22.77 serpents and if they drink anything deadly it will by no 00:11:22.81\00:11:24.86 means hurt them. They will lay hands on the sick and they will 00:11:24.90\00:11:28.24 recover. So very clearly Jesus said these signs are going to 00:11:28.27\00:11:31.66 follow those who believe. But I think you make a good point 00:11:31.69\00:11:36.14 about the establishing of the early faith. First of all, we're 00:11:36.18\00:11:42.05 very eager to see the miracles, the healings, but keep in mind 00:11:42.09\00:11:47.03 that if we're going to have the level of miracles and healings 00:11:47.07\00:11:51.20 we're also going to have the Ananias and Sapphira judgments. 00:11:51.23\00:11:54.88 I don't hear too many people clamoring about that saying I 00:11:54.91\00:11:58.34 wish we had more Ananias and Sapphiras dying in the church. 00:11:58.38\00:12:02.47 But the idea is that the Lord had to push the gospel message 00:12:02.50\00:12:05.74 forward and there were special manifestations of his power. 00:12:05.77\00:12:09.04 It's not the only place we see it. If we go back to the exodus 00:12:09.08\00:12:12.06 movement, for example. When the Lord brought his people out of 00:12:12.10\00:12:15.05 Egypt we see that movement beginning with a number of 00:12:15.08\00:12:18.68 powerful miracles and the deliverance of his people from 00:12:18.72\00:12:22.45 Egypt and the pouring out of the plagues upon Egypt, of the 00:12:22.48\00:12:26.18 parting of the Red Sea. But those miracles became less 00:12:26.22\00:12:29.33 frequent. Not that they went away, but they became less 00:12:29.36\00:12:32.41 frequent once the movement was established. And in the same way 00:12:32.44\00:12:37.12 there are miracles in the church today but they are less frequent 00:12:37.16\00:12:41.81 and you know one thought that I have is that we have a lot 00:12:41.84\00:12:47.00 less... we take less risks today. The other thing is that 00:12:47.04\00:12:51.05 there are also false signs that Jesus said would take place. 00:12:51.08\00:12:55.06 Miracles aren't always an evidence of the power of God. 00:12:55.10\00:12:57.58 Yeah. I have a scripture I'd like to share on that in 00:12:57.61\00:13:00.03 Matthew chapter 7. Remember Jesus said, many will say to me 00:13:00.06\00:13:03.96 in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, 00:13:04.00\00:13:07.50 cast out demons in your name and done many wonders in your name. 00:13:07.53\00:13:11.16 And then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me 00:13:11.20\00:13:15.06 you who practice lawlessness. So apparently if we really want 00:13:15.09\00:13:19.06 to know the truth of a miracle we have to compare it to the 00:13:19.09\00:13:22.54 teaching of the word and make sure that those things.. because 00:13:22.58\00:13:25.81 there will be false miracles, those who do things by powers 00:13:25.85\00:13:29.37 other than the power of God. So let's keep our anchor in the 00:13:29.41\00:13:32.99 word of God. Well, that's all the time we have for today. 00:13:33.03\00:13:36.58 We are looking forward to seeing you next time on 00:13:36.61\00:13:39.78 Books of the Book as we study the book of Acts. 00:13:39.81\00:13:42.94
