Welcome back to Books of the Book. We were studying here in 00:00:01.70\00:00:04.55 the book of Acts chapter 4 and we were looking at Peter's 00:00:04.59\00:00:07.60 second chance, his opportunity, actually when he came back 00:00:07.63\00:00:11.12 before the very rulers that were present when he denied 00:00:11.15\00:00:14.40 Jesus the first time. So what we're going to see here is 00:00:14.44\00:00:17.62 Peter's response. The Bible says in Acts chapter 4 and verse 7 00:00:17.66\00:00:21.97 that when these leaders met together, Annas, Caiaphas, John, 00:00:22.01\00:00:26.03 Alexander, as many as were of the family of the high priest. 00:00:26.06\00:00:30.41 It says, when they had set them in the midst they asked by what 00:00:30.44\00:00:34.20 power or by what name have you done this? And now, Jim, I think 00:00:34.23\00:00:37.85 about that when they set them in their midst. Why would you set 00:00:37.89\00:00:41.10 somebody in... I mean, how do you picture this. Intimidation. 00:00:41.14\00:00:46.03 You're surrounded by them. Yeah the nature of that whole thing 00:00:46.07\00:00:50.88 is they knew, this is the guy that denied Jesus before and 00:00:50.92\00:00:55.52 watch when we intimidate him. But watch when they intimidate 00:00:55.55\00:01:01.25 him. What happens this time with Peter. In 7 it says, When they 00:01:01.29\00:01:05.43 set them in their midst they asked by what power or by what 00:01:05.46\00:01:09.26 name have you done this. Then Peter, filled with the Holy 00:01:09.29\00:01:13.02 Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders of Israel 00:01:13.06\00:01:16.84 yet this day we are judged for a good deed done to a helpless 00:01:16.87\00:01:20.06 man and by what means he has been made well. Let it be known 00:01:20.09\00:01:23.21 to you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus 00:01:23.25\00:01:27.69 Christ of Nazareth whom you crucified whom God raised from 00:01:27.72\00:01:31.59 the dead this man's been healed. And he goes on to say in verse 00:01:31.63\00:01:35.17 12, nor is there salvation in any other for there is no other 00:01:35.21\00:01:38.82 name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. 00:01:38.85\00:01:42.77 And that's a powerful... I mean, first of all it's powerful that 00:01:42.80\00:01:47.05 Peter, there is not a shred of fear or intimidation in Peter 00:01:47.09\00:01:51.05 here, not a shred. He sees himself as you mentioned before 00:01:51.09\00:01:55.02 the break, there's no way out for him, but it doesn't 00:01:55.05\00:01:57.72 intimidate him in the least. He brings these guys to 00:01:57.76\00:02:00.36 accountability for what they have done to Christ and then he 00:02:00.40\00:02:03.72 basically tells them, you guys are a bunch of lost men unless 00:02:03.75\00:02:07.03 you repent and accept Jesus because he's the only name God's 00:02:07.06\00:02:10.56 given under heaven whereby anybody will be saved. We could 00:02:10.59\00:02:13.73 say a lot about that today. I mean the reality is there are 00:02:13.76\00:02:16.51 people today that want to say well there are a lot of options 00:02:16.55\00:02:19.76 for salvation. But the Bible says that there's only one way 00:02:19.80\00:02:22.64 there's only one way ever been provided and that way is through 00:02:22.68\00:02:25.57 Jesus Christ and I hope that our viewers have surrendered their 00:02:25.60\00:02:28.70 hearts to Jesus Christ and if not we see the opportunity given 00:02:28.73\00:02:31.65 in the scripture here today to give our hearts to Jesus now. 00:02:31.69\00:02:34.82 Now you were going to highlight on part of the argument there 00:02:34.85\00:02:37.95 that Peter brought out from scripture. 00:02:37.98\00:02:39.36 Yeah. When you look here in this passage the one thing that 00:02:39.40\00:02:43.63 stands out is that Peter is ready to die. He has a faith 00:02:43.66\00:02:47.82 that essentially there's nothing they can do to him now that he 00:02:47.86\00:02:52.20 has not already accepted. And that type of surrender leads him 00:02:52.24\00:02:56.14 to what he actually says in verse 11. If we go back there, 00:02:56.17\00:03:00.00 speaking of Jesus in verse 11, he says, this is the stone which 00:03:00.04\00:03:04.25 was rejected by you builders which has become the chief 00:03:04.28\00:03:09.20 corner stone. This particular reference to Psalm 118 is the 00:03:09.23\00:03:13.72 same reference that Jesus used in his own ministry and I 00:03:13.75\00:03:18.17 believe they could remember that reference. Let's go back to that 00:03:18.21\00:03:21.99 I'd like to point to that in Matthew chapter 21. In Matthew 00:03:22.02\00:03:26.22 21 Jesus tells a parable beginning in verse 33 about a 00:03:26.25\00:03:30.83 land owner who planted a vineyard and then he dug a wine 00:03:30.86\00:03:35.25 press, he built a tower and he leased it to vinedressers and 00:03:35.28\00:03:39.63 then he went away. Then when it came time to receive some of the 00:03:39.67\00:03:43.41 fruit from the vineyard he sent his servants to get the fruit. 00:03:43.45\00:03:47.54 But the vinedressers took the servants, they beat them, they 00:03:47.57\00:03:51.61 killed them, they wouldn't give them any fruit. So finally he 00:03:51.64\00:03:55.59 sends his Son. And of course, this is a reference to Jesus 00:03:55.63\00:03:59.72 being sent after the prophets had been sent seeking fruit in 00:03:59.75\00:04:03.36 the lives of the children of Israel and then at the very end 00:04:03.40\00:04:07.05 of this it says, therefore, in verse 40, when the owner of the 00:04:07.08\00:04:10.73 vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers. And of 00:04:10.77\00:04:14.39 course, they answer with indignation, he will destroy 00:04:14.42\00:04:18.09 those wicked men miserably and he'll lease his vineyard to 00:04:18.13\00:04:21.67 other vinedressers who will render to him 00:04:21.70\00:04:23.75 the fruits in their seasons. 00:04:23.78\00:04:25.45 And Jesus then quotes that same passage of scripture from Psalm 00:04:25.48\00:04:29.42 118 that Peter quoted in his sermon. He says have you never 00:04:29.46\00:04:33.07 read in the scriptures the stone which the builders rejected has 00:04:33.11\00:04:36.56 become the chief corner stone. This was the Lord's doing and it 00:04:36.60\00:04:40.02 is marvelous in our eyes. Therefore, I say to you, the 00:04:40.05\00:04:43.50 kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation 00:04:43.54\00:04:47.14 bearing the fruits of it. And the fascinating about this story 00:04:47.17\00:04:51.06 is when you look at verse 45, it says now when the chief priests 00:04:51.10\00:04:54.96 and Pharisees heard his parables they perceived that he 00:04:54.99\00:04:59.26 was speaking of them. I think that's a pretty good perception, 00:04:59.30\00:05:02.32 don't you? He was speaking of them and he was being very clear 00:05:02.35\00:05:06.49 that by rejecting himself as the Messiah that the kingdom of God 00:05:06.53\00:05:10.64 was going to be taken from them and given to someone else. 00:05:10.67\00:05:13.11 And now Peter referencing this same scripture... 00:05:13.14\00:05:16.50 No need for perception here. 00:05:16.53\00:05:18.38 No, no need for perception. He's very plain. You crucified him 00:05:18.42\00:05:22.57 and he is that stone which was rejected by you builders and has 00:05:22.61\00:05:26.28 become the chief corner stone and there is not salvation in 00:05:26.31\00:05:31.24 any other. By not accepting Jesus Christ you are lost. Whew! 00:05:31.28\00:05:35.89 That was a very plain and powerful and might I say one of 00:05:35.93\00:05:39.84 the most fearless declarations every seen and it just gives 00:05:39.88\00:05:43.72 me hope and I think that we can agree that our viewers should be 00:05:43.76\00:05:48.11 hearing in these passages a message of hope. That message is 00:05:48.15\00:05:52.14 that you may have denied Christ in your life, through your 00:05:52.18\00:05:56.53 practices you may have had many shameful experiences that you 00:05:56.56\00:06:00.16 don't know how to recover from. But if you look at the story 00:06:00.20\00:06:03.34 here of the apostle Peter it's one of the most miraculous 00:06:03.38\00:06:06.47 transformations in all of scripture and it gives evidence 00:06:06.50\00:06:11.16 that God can restore fully and take someone who is of little 00:06:11.20\00:06:16.32 depth and give them the strength of character that is actually a 00:06:16.35\00:06:21.44 reflection of the Lord Jesus himself. That's right. Now if 00:06:21.47\00:06:25.38 you look further in verse 13 it was clear that they perceived 00:06:25.42\00:06:29.17 this. In verse 13 it says, Now when they saw the boldness of 00:06:29.21\00:06:32.80 Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated and 00:06:32.84\00:06:36.36 untrained men they marveled and they realized that they had been 00:06:36.40\00:06:41.24 with Jesus. You have to imagine they were looking back to and 00:06:41.27\00:06:45.80 thinking back to wow we've never heard anybody preach with such 00:06:45.83\00:06:50.33 authority, power, clear reasoning except for Jesus of 00:06:50.36\00:06:56.29 Nazareth. And they knew when they saw this. This is only from 00:06:56.33\00:07:00.73 the Lord Jesus. They must have been with Jesus. It doesn't say 00:07:00.77\00:07:04.65 that they admitted that they had been with Jesus, it doesn't say 00:07:04.69\00:07:08.54 they confessed that they had been with Jesus. They were 00:07:08.57\00:07:10.59 trying to outwardly say Jesus was dead, he's buried, but they 00:07:10.63\00:07:14.70 realized, in their hearts they knew, they recognized that they 00:07:14.74\00:07:18.78 had been with Jesus. Powerful. 00:07:18.81\00:07:20.36 Yeah absolutely. And what's interesting about that is, Jim, 00:07:20.40\00:07:24.54 it goes on to tell us that... Look at verse 14. It says, and 00:07:24.58\00:07:28.20 seeing the man who had been healed standing with them... 00:07:28.23\00:07:31.57 In other words, the Lord Jesus had provided them an evidence 00:07:31.61\00:07:34.91 so that in addition to them seeing the power and the 00:07:34.95\00:07:38.50 confidence and the change in Peter, there was that man 00:07:38.54\00:07:42.33 standing there as a living testimony that Jesus was alive. 00:07:42.37\00:07:46.09 So the Lord Jesus provided that proof. So there they stand with 00:07:46.13\00:07:51.48 Peter's direct indictment and there's the man standing with 00:07:51.52\00:07:56.80 them and it says, they could say nothing against it. And it goes 00:07:56.83\00:08:02.24 on in verse 16 to say that... Well we'll read on in verse 15. 00:08:02.28\00:08:06.03 It says when they had commanded them to go outside of the 00:08:06.07\00:08:09.31 counsel they conferred among themselves, which that's 00:08:09.34\00:08:12.51 interesting isn't it? They didn't go to scripture, they 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.65 didn't inquire of the Lord and say Lord are we doing the right 00:08:15.69\00:08:18.54 or wrong thing. You see their motive here is really not 00:08:18.58\00:08:21.17 sincerity and I want to say that sometimes we can find ourselves 00:08:21.20\00:08:25.20 in that place where we really are not sincerely wanting to 00:08:25.24\00:08:28.53 know and follow truth. We just want to sustain what we already 00:08:28.56\00:08:31.81 believe. They conferred among themselves and sometimes when 00:08:31.85\00:08:35.72 we're faced with some new truth in scripture that is different 00:08:35.75\00:08:39.13 that what we've always believed, instead of going to God and 00:08:39.17\00:08:42.55 saying Lord if this is your truth show it to me, we go to 00:08:42.59\00:08:45.90 people who think like us and we bolster ourselves and encourage 00:08:45.94\00:08:50.01 ourselves by saying well none of them believe either. And we see 00:08:50.05\00:08:53.69 that here. They conferred among themselves, what shall we do and 00:08:53.73\00:08:57.34 notice indeed that a notable miracle has been done through 00:08:57.37\00:09:01.49 them as evidence to all who dwell in Jerusalem and we cannot 00:09:01.53\00:09:05.71 deny it. But so that it spreads no further, let us severely 00:09:05.74\00:09:09.89 threaten them. Why don't they want it to spread 00:09:09.93\00:09:12.14 if it's so irrefutable? They can see they can't refute 00:09:12.18\00:09:17.22 it but they don't want this getting out. So in spite of all 00:09:17.26\00:09:21.71 that, hey in spite of the evidence, we're going to make 00:09:21.75\00:09:25.21 sure this message doesn't get out. So they called them in, 00:09:25.25\00:09:28.64 they threatened them and I love Peter's response. Verse 19 says, 00:09:28.68\00:09:31.90 Peter and John answered and said to them, Whether it is right in 00:09:31.94\00:09:35.12 the sight of God to listen to you more than God, you judge. 00:09:35.15\00:09:38.96 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and 00:09:38.99\00:09:43.44 heard. And that is such a true statement for every one of us. 00:09:43.48\00:09:47.64 If we really had an encounter with Jesus, if he's really 00:09:47.68\00:09:51.77 changed our lives we cannot but speak of him. I mean, don't tell 00:09:51.80\00:09:57.37 any more about the thing that you're so excited about. How 00:09:57.40\00:10:00.14 many times had Jesus healed somebody and said now don't tell 00:10:00.18\00:10:02.89 anybody. I don't think it ever worked. 00:10:02.92\00:10:05.65 You know, I know there's a lot of people who say I couldn't 00:10:05.68\00:10:09.92 imagine sharing with others, that's not my gift, you know, 00:10:09.96\00:10:14.16 I'm not an evangelist, that's not me. The truth is that we're 00:10:14.20\00:10:18.37 all evangelists. We're just evangelists in what we are 00:10:18.40\00:10:21.55 confident in. I mean, I remember one dear sister in a church that 00:10:21.58\00:10:27.89 I was pastoring who was a wonderful cook and she was 00:10:27.93\00:10:33.99 always bringing the best dishes to potluck and that sort of 00:10:34.02\00:10:37.64 thing and I remember her finding out that I did not like brussel 00:10:37.67\00:10:42.24 sprouts. And I mean, who would like brussel sprouts. But she 00:10:42.27\00:10:46.80 was sure that she could get me to like brussel sprouts. 00:10:46.83\00:10:49.62 She said, you're going to love my brussel sprouts. I don't 00:10:49.66\00:10:52.10 remember what she did. I think she just dunked it a bunch of 00:10:52.14\00:10:55.85 some type of sauce. But she wanted to prove to me, and she 00:10:55.88\00:10:59.52 was convinced, that I would like her brussel sprouts. She was a 00:10:59.56\00:11:04.52 brussel sprout evangelist. She had confidence in what she could 00:11:04.56\00:11:08.37 do and she thought there's no way; I'm going to be able to do 00:11:08.40\00:11:12.18 this. When we believe in something, when we have 00:11:12.22\00:11:15.89 confidence in something which the Lord Jesus built for these 00:11:15.92\00:11:19.46 disciples when he opened the scriptures to their 00:11:19.49\00:11:21.44 understanding in Luke 24 and showed them the evidence of his 00:11:21.47\00:11:25.05 Messiahship right from scripture With that foundation they could 00:11:25.08\00:11:28.63 not but share. It was so convincing, it was so true, that 00:11:28.66\00:11:31.86 they knew that if they could just have the opportunity to 00:11:31.89\00:11:35.02 share it with others that they would believe it. And there may 00:11:35.05\00:11:37.70 be some here today who are looking at this and saying, you 00:11:37.74\00:11:40.35 know, I couldn't be an evangelist. No, you can but it 00:11:40.39\00:11:44.25 all requires studying the clear evidences of our faith and 00:11:44.29\00:11:47.63 gaining confidence in the word and with that confidence will 00:11:47.66\00:11:50.97 come a willingness to share. 00:11:51.00\00:11:52.37 That's right and you cannot but tell the things you've seen and 00:11:52.40\00:11:55.70 heard. Now wrapping up here where it says in verse 23, they 00:11:55.73\00:11:59.70 let them go and they went to their companions. Very evidently 00:11:59.73\00:12:02.91 the companions had been praying for them. They didn't know what 00:12:02.95\00:12:05.42 was going on with Peter and John They thought they were going to 00:12:05.46\00:12:07.90 crucifixion and they were praying and the Lord heard those 00:12:07.93\00:12:11.29 prayers and it's interesting; they came back and then when 00:12:11.33\00:12:14.61 they came among their companions they all lifted up their voice 00:12:14.65\00:12:17.98 to the Lord and it's interesting that as they prayed, in verse 24 00:12:18.02\00:12:21.32 it says, Lord you are God who made heaven and earth, the sea 00:12:21.35\00:12:24.55 and all that is in them who by the mouth of your servant David 00:12:24.59\00:12:28.32 have said... and then they quote from the second Psalm... Why do 00:12:28.36\00:12:32.06 the nations rage and the people plot vain things and it's 00:12:32.10\00:12:35.91 interesting that, and I'm going through this kind of quickly 00:12:35.94\00:12:41.55 here but in verse 29 they pray now Lord look on their threats 00:12:41.58\00:12:46.35 and grant to your servants that with all boldness they may speak 00:12:46.38\00:12:50.60 your word by stretching out your hand to heal and that signs and 00:12:50.63\00:12:54.68 wonders may be done through the name of your Holy Servant Jesus. 00:12:54.71\00:12:58.73 And remember this was the first miracle, the first sign and 00:12:58.76\00:13:01.43 wonder that had been done... that these be done... and it 00:13:01.47\00:13:04.06 says in verse 31, when they had prayed the place where they were 00:13:04.10\00:13:06.85 assembled together was shaken and they were all filled with 00:13:06.89\00:13:09.44 the Holy Spirit and they spoke the word of God with boldness. 00:13:09.48\00:13:13.07 Wow! You know we may wonder why the apostles needed to pray for 00:13:13.11\00:13:16.73 boldness when they seemed to speak so boldly, but oftentimes 00:13:16.77\00:13:20.25 we forget that they were just normal fisherman. They weren't 00:13:20.28\00:13:24.27 trained preachers and in many ways that makes them a lot like 00:13:24.30\00:13:28.26 us, like you and me. And just like they had to pray for 00:13:28.29\00:13:31.67 boldness, we have to pray for boldness. Well that's all the 00:13:31.70\00:13:34.86 time we have for now. We hope you'll join us next time on 00:13:34.89\00:13:38.01 Books of the Book as we study the book of Acts. 00:13:38.04\00:13:39.94
