Welcome to Books of the Book. I'm Pastor Mark Howard. I'm a 00:00:20.94\00:00:24.33 pastor in the Michigan Conference of the Seventh-day 00:00:24.36\00:00:25.85 Adventist church and I'm here with my brother, my co-host, 00:00:25.89\00:00:29.00 Jim Howard who also pastors in Michigan. We have been studying 00:00:29.04\00:00:32.71 in the book of Acts. In our last time together we were in Acts 00:00:32.75\00:00:36.53 chapter 3 and we were looking at the very first healing in the 00:00:36.57\00:00:40.32 New Testament church since Jesus' ascension to heaven. 00:00:40.35\00:00:43.46 Of course we see all the healings of Christ but we then 00:00:43.50\00:00:46.75 came across the first bonafide miracle, Jim, of the New 00:00:46.78\00:00:49.96 Testament church where Peter heals the man at the temple gate 00:00:50.00\00:00:53.92 the lame man who was lame from his birth. Now we followed 00:00:53.95\00:00:58.11 through that story and cut off at our last session together and 00:00:58.15\00:01:02.96 in chapter 4 we're picking up on some of the aftermath of that 00:01:02.99\00:01:07.77 story. Before we go into scripture I'd like to just begin 00:01:07.80\00:01:10.71 with a word of prayer. I'm hoping you have your Bibles, 00:01:10.75\00:01:13.59 our viewers have their Bibles with them. We're going to pray 00:01:13.63\00:01:16.21 and ask God to guide our study of his word today. 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.32 Father in heaven, we do thank you for your word and we thank 00:01:18.36\00:01:21.96 you for the Spirit of truth that you've given to guide us into 00:01:21.99\00:01:25.56 truth. I pray that you would send him to give us 00:01:25.59\00:01:27.65 understanding as we study today. In Jesus name, Amen. 00:01:27.69\00:01:30.85 Now I actually want to pick up just before chapter 4 in the 00:01:30.89\00:01:35.13 last verse of chapter 3. Of course, Peter has healed the 00:01:35.16\00:01:39.09 lame man and when the people are astonished... One of the 00:01:39.12\00:01:42.29 things we mentioned last time is the people are astonished by 00:01:42.32\00:01:45.46 the healing. Peter is not astonished. Peter has this 00:01:45.49\00:01:49.25 attitude that's like hey what are you guys so surprised about? 00:01:49.29\00:01:52.33 Isn't this what we would expect from the Lord Jesus. And we see 00:01:52.37\00:01:55.84 this expectant faith of Peter. Then he takes an opportunity 00:01:55.87\00:02:00.13 to share with his hearers that this healed man is an evidence 00:02:00.17\00:02:03.69 that Jesus of Nazareth that was crucified, that many of them 00:02:03.72\00:02:07.45 has shouted crucify him, crucify him was indeed the Son of God 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.93 and their Messiah and of course they're brought to a point of 00:02:10.97\00:02:15.06 repentance. It's interesting as Peter closes chapter 3 he says, 00:02:15.09\00:02:19.69 to you first God having raised up his servant Jesus sent him 00:02:19.72\00:02:24.29 to bless you in turning away every one of you from your 00:02:24.32\00:02:28.02 iniquity. So he gives them this opportunity here for repentance. 00:02:28.06\00:02:32.11 It's amazing to me that just prior to this in the verse just 00:02:32.15\00:02:36.54 before he quotes what God said to Abraham, In your seed all the 00:02:36.57\00:02:40.93 families of the earth shall be blessed. And he is here 00:02:40.96\00:02:44.39 pinpointing that Jesus was that seed and first and foremost he 00:02:44.43\00:02:48.52 was to be a blessing to them, those same ones who shouted 00:02:48.55\00:02:51.82 crucify him, crucify him. Here we find that he was intended to 00:02:51.86\00:02:56.06 be a blessing to them. Isn't that a large-hearted thing to 00:02:56.09\00:03:00.26 say to this group who were so opposed to the works and 00:03:00.29\00:03:04.91 teachings of Jesus. But here the promise is still given to them 00:03:04.95\00:03:08.35 that if they would turn, they could be accepted. 00:03:08.38\00:03:11.24 That's right. So we see the heart and the compassion of God 00:03:11.28\00:03:13.87 for his children wherever they may be. These are ones who had 00:03:13.91\00:03:16.44 openly rejected. Like I said, many of them had been shouting 00:03:16.48\00:03:19.53 crucify him, crucify him, but God's heart goes out to them 00:03:19.56\00:03:22.51 for their salvation. Now what's interesting as we come into 00:03:22.54\00:03:25.63 chapter 4, verse 1 it says, Now as they spoke to the people 00:03:25.66\00:03:29.02 the priests, the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came 00:03:29.06\00:03:32.39 upon them being greatly disturbed that they taught the 00:03:32.42\00:03:35.72 people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 00:03:35.76\00:03:39.11 Now the gospels teach us that the Sadducees did not believe in 00:03:39.14\00:03:42.46 the resurrection. What's so interesting here is that the 00:03:42.49\00:03:45.81 Sadducees in light of this miracle, and we're going to go 00:03:45.84\00:03:49.09 on in this chapter and see that this was an unrefutable miracle. 00:03:49.12\00:03:52.70 I mean everybody had to acknowledge that this was a 00:03:52.73\00:03:56.01 miracle of God. And yet the Sadducees were so disappointed 00:03:56.05\00:03:59.86 that their belief, their opinion was contradicted, somebody had 00:03:59.90\00:04:04.75 a different Bible opinion than them, they were so disturbed by 00:04:04.79\00:04:09.61 that that they overlooked all the evidence of power and 00:04:09.64\00:04:12.60 miracle and just wanted to get to silence this message because 00:04:12.64\00:04:17.99 it was going contrary to what they taught. So it says as they 00:04:18.02\00:04:23.34 spoke to the priests, the captain of the people and the 00:04:23.37\00:04:27.01 Sadducees came upon them, verse 2, being greatly disturbed, and 00:04:27.05\00:04:30.53 then verse 3 says, and they laid hands on them and put them in 00:04:30.57\00:04:34.55 custody until the next day for it was already evening. However, 00:04:34.59\00:04:38.60 many of those who heard the word believed and the number of men 00:04:38.63\00:04:42.50 came to be about 5000. Now it's interesting here. The number of 00:04:42.53\00:04:45.43 men, we're not counting women and children, and the Bible does 00:04:45.47\00:04:48.69 this in many places, so the church is growing quite a bit. 00:04:48.73\00:04:51.93 Before we get into that though, it's interesting the language 00:04:51.97\00:04:55.14 here of verse 2, they were greatly disturbed, I'm sorry 00:04:55.17\00:04:59.65 verse 1 it says, the Sadducees, the priests and the captain of 00:04:59.69\00:05:02.36 the temple came upon them. I think of the language there, 00:05:02.39\00:05:05.70 they came upon them. What does that conjure up in your mind? 00:05:05.74\00:05:09.27 They came upon them... Pardon me guys, could we uh-huh have a 00:05:09.30\00:05:13.57 conversation with you? No. Came upon them. In other words, it 00:05:13.60\00:05:18.28 tells us that they were very disturbed, but this is a very 00:05:18.32\00:05:22.72 forceful and forcible approach to the apostles and it says in 00:05:22.76\00:05:26.92 verse 3, they laid hands on them so they took them violently. 00:05:26.96\00:05:31.24 This is a characteristic that we find. It's interesting that they 00:05:31.27\00:05:35.64 don't come to Peter and John and say now listen guys, let's look 00:05:35.67\00:05:39.47 at scripture and look at what you guys are teaching. They can 00:05:39.51\00:05:43.28 not refute their teaching and it's characteristic when a 00:05:43.31\00:05:47.06 person can't refute from the word what they disagree with 00:05:47.09\00:05:50.81 that they turn to argumentiveness and violence. 00:05:50.84\00:05:54.93 So they took them by forceful hands and it says they put them 00:05:54.97\00:05:58.23 in custody until the next day for it was evening. It was too 00:05:58.26\00:06:01.97 late to do anything and so they put them in jail. Think about 00:06:02.01\00:06:06.21 this for a minute. Peter and John are taken by the religious 00:06:06.24\00:06:10.61 leaders and put in jail. What is going through their minds here? 00:06:10.64\00:06:15.28 What are they on the heels of. They just preached about that 00:06:15.32\00:06:19.70 the crucifixion of their own Master. So they're in jail 00:06:19.74\00:06:24.05 awaiting a decision the next morning which is likely in their 00:06:24.09\00:06:29.83 minds going to be death. And this is where you're going to 00:06:29.86\00:06:34.80 pick up in a little bit here, but we see in verse 4 however... 00:06:34.84\00:06:39.05 It's interesting, however, in spite of all of the opposition 00:06:39.08\00:06:43.01 from the leaders we see the church growing to be now about 00:06:43.05\00:06:46.80 5000 men not counting the women and children. So the church is 00:06:46.84\00:06:50.36 exploding. We see the power of God growing the church in spite 00:06:50.40\00:06:53.89 of some of the opposition. 00:06:53.92\00:06:55.84 It seems as though the more forcible they were the more the 00:06:55.88\00:06:59.76 church grew. It just wasn't a good argument. It wasn't a good 00:06:59.79\00:07:03.86 way of handling it and people were smart enough to see the 00:07:03.89\00:07:07.89 evidence of the Holy Spirit and the evidence of God in what was 00:07:07.93\00:07:10.21 happening with the apostles and they could clearly see that 00:07:10.25\00:07:12.64 there was nothing that the priests and rulers could do to 00:07:12.67\00:07:14.99 refute that. So they are brought to another forcible situation. 00:07:15.03\00:07:19.72 This is really perhaps the highlight of this chapter here 00:07:19.75\00:07:22.54 in chapter 4. Beginning in verse 5 we'll read there. It says, and 00:07:22.58\00:07:26.85 it came to pass on the next day that the rulers, elders, and 00:07:26.88\00:07:32.14 scribes as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John and 00:07:32.18\00:07:36.52 Alexander and as many as were of the family of the high priest 00:07:36.56\00:07:40.87 were gathered together at Jerusalem. 00:07:40.91\00:07:43.58 Now you read this list and there is not really too much left out, 00:07:43.62\00:07:47.82 right? I mean, this is all the religious leaders, all those 00:07:47.86\00:07:50.88 with authority. Right. I was looking up some of 00:07:50.91\00:07:54.30 the names and Alexander is a name, for example, that 00:07:54.34\00:07:56.70 commentators aren't quite sure who he was. John was a man who 00:07:56.73\00:08:00.59 was a very influential leader in Jerusalem in those days and the 00:08:00.63\00:08:04.27 surrounding area. So the idea we get is besides the religious 00:08:04.30\00:08:07.46 leaders, the highest religious authorities in the church, you 00:08:07.49\00:08:11.61 have other people that are men of reputation which is very 00:08:11.64\00:08:15.72 significant here. That's right. And in verse 7 00:08:15.75\00:08:18.67 they put Peter and John in a very awkward situation. It says, 00:08:18.70\00:08:23.91 They set them in the midst. They asked by what power, by what 00:08:23.95\00:08:28.17 name have you done this. So they set them in the midst, right 00:08:28.21\00:08:32.40 here in the middle. You can imagine the spotlight, as it 00:08:32.44\00:08:36.60 were, was upon them and all of the power and authority to do 00:08:36.63\00:08:40.58 with them what they would was surrounding them. And you can't 00:08:40.62\00:08:44.98 help but think back to the trial of Jesus. And Peter here 00:08:45.01\00:08:49.48 especially has to be, through his mind, experiencing, 00:08:49.52\00:08:53.92 re-experiencing, revisiting what happened at the trial of Jesus 00:08:53.95\00:08:57.97 when first Jesus was taken rather forcibly and then he was 00:08:58.01\00:09:01.96 taken to the judgment hall, and as he was taken to the judgment 00:09:01.99\00:09:05.86 hall Peter followed, John followed, but the Bible says 00:09:05.90\00:09:09.35 that John followed right in with Jesus but Peter followed at a 00:09:09.39\00:09:12.97 distance. It's never safe to follow at a distance. 00:09:13.01\00:09:16.71 You know, it's interesting too, Jim, I've looked this up on all 00:09:16.75\00:09:20.35 of the synoptic gospels, Matthew Mark and Luke. It tells us that 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.96 Peter followed at a distance. In other words, none of them 00:09:23.99\00:09:26.10 left that detail out. That was significant. 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.43 It was important because of the fact that that seemed to be the 00:09:28.46\00:09:32.88 reason or the cause for Peter's denial. 00:09:32.92\00:09:36.55 Yeah. It tells us something about Peter and his character 00:09:36.59\00:09:38.91 there. That's right. So Peter enters in 00:09:38.94\00:09:41.62 at a distance and of course we recognize that Peter was told 00:09:41.66\00:09:45.90 prior to this by Jesus that he would deny him three times 00:09:45.94\00:09:50.94 before the cock crowed twice. And sure enough, Peter is asked 00:09:50.98\00:09:55.63 by a girl and in one case it even says that he's asked by the 00:09:55.67\00:10:00.50 servant of the high priest who he is and isn't he with Jesus. 00:10:00.54\00:10:05.34 It's interesting to me that Peter denied Jesus to this 00:10:05.37\00:10:08.31 servant of the high priest, someone who was really 00:10:08.35\00:10:11.22 relatively low authority in comparison. But now here he is, 00:10:11.26\00:10:16.04 not before the servant of the high priest and a girl, but here 00:10:16.07\00:10:21.33 he is before Annas, Caiaphas, as you said renowned leaders, the 00:10:21.37\00:10:26.56 rulers, the elders. Peter is brought back into this situation 00:10:26.59\00:10:31.85 Now previously when Peter was in that situation he cared more 00:10:31.89\00:10:37.36 about his reputation than he actually was a man of character 00:10:37.39\00:10:42.26 at that point. He thought of himself more than he really was. 00:10:42.30\00:10:47.21 So it was that when the time came he denied three times and 00:10:47.24\00:10:51.69 after that happened the Bible says that the Lord turned and 00:10:51.73\00:10:55.99 looked right at Peter. You can imagine what happened when the 00:10:56.02\00:10:59.92 Lord turned after Peter denied him that third time, the Lord 00:10:59.96\00:11:03.27 turned and looked at Peter and Peter was broken and the Bible 00:11:03.30\00:11:07.23 says that he went away and wept. So then we had the crucifixion 00:11:07.26\00:11:11.18 of Jesus. We have that beautiful story of the restoration of 00:11:11.22\00:11:15.10 Peter. You know, I think about that for 00:11:15.13\00:11:17.24 a minute. I think about times, and I hate to say it, where I've 00:11:17.28\00:11:20.84 had situations in my life where I maybe in high school was with 00:11:20.87\00:11:24.40 a group of friends who didn't like one of my friends and they 00:11:24.43\00:11:27.45 were a real friend of mine but I was in that group and when the 00:11:27.48\00:11:30.40 pressure was on and they were talking negatively I joined in 00:11:30.44\00:11:34.53 and then the friend that was being talked about found out 00:11:34.56\00:11:38.65 what I said. You know, I never intended to hurt my friend but 00:11:38.68\00:11:42.75 the point is I caved in because of that love of reputation and 00:11:42.79\00:11:47.00 when they found out and I saw what it did to them and how it 00:11:47.04\00:11:51.92 hurt them you know I remember how it made me feel. That's a 00:11:51.96\00:11:56.45 pale comparison to where Peter was where Jesus eyes meet him 00:11:56.48\00:12:00.54 right in the midst of his denial and the rooster crows and then 00:12:00.57\00:12:04.60 the Bible says in Luke that Jesus looked right at Peter. 00:12:04.63\00:12:07.56 And in that moment here's Peter denying his master with cursing 00:12:07.60\00:12:11.35 and swearing and while the swearing is still on his lips 00:12:11.39\00:12:15.55 Jesus looks right at him and it pierced his heart. 00:12:15.58\00:12:19.77 But now Peter has, after going through that experience, had to 00:12:19.81\00:12:26.19 also be reinstated and you remember that Jesus met him 00:12:26.22\00:12:29.36 during those 40 days after his resurrection when he appeared 00:12:29.39\00:12:32.93 to the disciples and he asked him three times do you love me, 00:12:32.96\00:12:36.76 do you love me, do you love me? And Peter received once again 00:12:36.79\00:12:41.75 the assurance that he was a disciple of Christ. But yet it 00:12:41.79\00:12:46.06 still weighed upon his heart that he had denied his Lord. 00:12:46.09\00:12:51.08 So what we see here is a very eerie similarity to that trial 00:12:51.11\00:12:55.72 of Jesus. And Peter is here being given a second chance. 00:12:55.75\00:13:00.29 How will he respond when, as he stated earlier, it appears that 00:13:00.33\00:13:04.70 there's no hope, there is no opportunity, no out. As far as 00:13:04.74\00:13:08.39 he can see there's no evidence that he's going to get out of 00:13:08.43\00:13:12.05 this. Just like Jesus was crucified after his trial 00:13:12.08\00:13:16.00 Peter now what is he going to do? Is he going to try to skate 00:13:16.03\00:13:18.73 out of it, is he going to try to evade it? That's what he did 00:13:18.77\00:13:21.43 before. But this is the new Peter and we're about to see 00:13:21.47\00:13:25.56 one of the most miraculous changes or conversions seen and 00:13:25.59\00:13:29.65 expressed here in the answer of the apostle Peter. 00:13:29.68\00:13:32.45 Absolutely. And we're going to see it after we break. We're 00:13:32.48\00:13:36.25 going to take a short break here and I hope you come back with us 00:13:36.29\00:13:38.56 as we look at this transformation that God gave 00:13:38.59\00:13:41.49 in the life of the apostle Peter We'll see you in a minute. 00:13:41.52\00:13:44.37
