Welcome back to Books of the Book. We are studying the book 00:00:02.00\00:00:04.50 of Acts. Right before the break we had been looking in Acts 00:00:04.54\00:00:06.97 chapter 3 about this healing of the lame man at the temple gate, 00:00:07.01\00:00:11.15 the first bonafide miracle we find of healing in the New 00:00:11.18\00:00:15.05 Testament church. You had mentioned that we see miraculous 00:00:15.09\00:00:18.89 working in the power of the Holy Spirit. As far as a healing that 00:00:18.93\00:00:22.76 took place like in the ministry of Jesus, we don't see that 00:00:22.79\00:00:26.68 until right now. Another thing, Jim, you had mentioned before 00:00:26.72\00:00:31.90 the break that there may have been kind of a despair among 00:00:31.93\00:00:35.72 some of the people. You know, here was Jesus and all these 00:00:35.75\00:00:39.13 wonderful things were happening and even though we know his 00:00:39.16\00:00:42.86 disciples had worked miracles prior to Christ's crucifixion 00:00:42.89\00:00:47.05 and resurrection and ascension, there hasn't been anything like 00:00:47.09\00:00:51.30 that since his ascension and so people have probably viewed some 00:00:51.34\00:00:55.84 of them with disappointment and some of them with rejoicing that 00:00:55.87\00:00:59.76 every trace of Jesus is gone, you know. The work of Jesus, the 00:00:59.79\00:01:03.90 miracles of Jesus, the hope that he gave was gone. And it seems 00:01:03.93\00:01:08.95 likely to us here that this man at the temple gate upon our 00:01:08.98\00:01:13.93 first initial reading it may not seem like he was too acquainted 00:01:13.97\00:01:18.53 with Jesus, but when Peter heals him he goes on to say which 00:01:18.57\00:01:22.56 we're going to see that it was through faith in the name of 00:01:22.60\00:01:26.36 Jesus that the man was healed. You don't have faith in the name 00:01:26.40\00:01:31.04 of somebody you don't know and it's likely that this man and 00:01:31.07\00:01:35.56 his associates had come to know of Jesus and wanted to be healed 00:01:35.60\00:01:39.24 but was not able to make it before the crucifixion of Jesus. 00:01:39.28\00:01:42.89 So he was left asking alms like he had. 00:01:42.92\00:01:45.58 So he was left out and his loved ones probably felt sorry 00:01:45.62\00:01:48.75 for him and said look we can take you to the temple gate but 00:01:48.79\00:01:53.30 his hope was gone. So for Peter to come and you notice look at 00:01:53.34\00:01:58.17 me he said and when he said the name Jesus Christ of Nazareth 00:01:58.21\00:02:03.02 that man, Jesus of Nazareth, he had enough faith to respond to 00:02:03.05\00:02:06.81 Peter and he's healed and walking and leaping and praising 00:02:06.85\00:02:11.05 God and everybody's amazed. So we're picking up here at 00:02:11.08\00:02:15.21 Peter's response in verse 12. We looked at this a little bit. 00:02:15.25\00:02:21.51 Peter said why do you marvel at these things. And he says, verse 00:02:21.54\00:02:27.77 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our 00:02:28.51\00:02:30.55 fathers glorified his servant Jesus who you delivered up and 00:02:30.59\00:02:34.34 denied in the presence of Pilate when he was determined to let 00:02:34.37\00:02:38.56 him go. Now you got to think. Pilate, the gentile, saw that 00:02:38.59\00:02:42.07 there was no fault in this man and we, the ones who were 00:02:42.10\00:02:45.51 supposed to the worshipers of God, we weren't going to let him 00:02:45.54\00:02:48.84 go and even Pilate, the judge, was going to let him go. But you 00:02:48.88\00:02:51.75 were determined not to let him go. He says in verse 14: You 00:02:51.79\00:02:55.21 denied the Holy One and the Just and asked for a murderer to be 00:02:55.25\00:02:59.01 granted to you and killed the Prince of Life who God raised 00:02:59.04\00:03:03.93 from the dead of whom we are witnesses and his name, through 00:03:03.96\00:03:08.78 faith in his name, has made this man strong who you see and know. 00:03:08.82\00:03:13.14 Yes, the faith which comes through him has given him (this 00:03:13.17\00:03:17.13 man) this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. 00:03:17.17\00:03:22.18 Now I mean we're just into chapter 3 but one thing that 00:03:22.22\00:03:27.17 continually floors me is that Peter does not have a political 00:03:27.20\00:03:31.19 bone in his body right now. We're going to find that prior 00:03:31.22\00:03:34.77 to this Peter was very reputation driven and he always 00:03:34.80\00:03:38.28 wanted to appear in a certain light before people. But when we 00:03:38.31\00:03:41.83 come into the New Testament here in the book of Acts and we see 00:03:41.87\00:03:47.63 the new Peter. He is, what do I want to say? He is very direct 00:03:47.67\00:03:53.15 in his speaking. He is not at all trying to please or play any 00:03:53.18\00:03:58.74 favorites or please any crowd. And you know I suppose at first 00:03:58.78\00:04:03.80 glance we might be tempted to look at Peter as just having 00:04:03.83\00:04:07.85 this... maybe he has a chip and he's just trying to get out 00:04:07.88\00:04:11.81 and has this attitude. And in fact, I've heard it today even 00:04:11.84\00:04:16.49 in the ministry when a minister gets up and speaks very strongly 00:04:16.53\00:04:21.15 about something, it's not uncommon, and I'm not just 00:04:21.18\00:04:23.52 talking about myself as a minister although I've heard 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.83 this with myself of with others, you know, I wonder what got into 00:04:25.87\00:04:29.41 him today. You know, it's got to be some personal thing. We have 00:04:29.45\00:04:34.14 lost the understanding that when the Holy Spirit works through 00:04:34.17\00:04:39.17 God's messenger, the messages need to be in part very direct 00:04:39.21\00:04:44.07 because it has to reach down to the depth of what's in our heart 00:04:44.11\00:04:48.92 because God is trying to cleanse us from the bottom and inside 00:04:48.95\00:04:53.73 out. So Peter's message here really strikes me as... the 00:04:53.77\00:04:58.75 nature of his preaching was very direct and forward. 00:04:58.78\00:05:03.70 That's right. When I look at it it almost appears that he's 00:05:03.73\00:05:09.38 making a deliberate attempt to point out the audacity of these 00:05:09.42\00:05:13.91 people for what they had done. And I think there's intent in 00:05:13.95\00:05:18.41 that. He says... Well I want to interject and 00:05:18.44\00:05:22.23 hold the thought. But one thing that is important here is when 00:05:22.26\00:05:27.14 we look at his directness, too often we tend to think of how 00:05:27.17\00:05:31.03 we, the recipient, are going to handle the message or how we the 00:05:31.06\00:05:34.72 human being are going to handle it and who it hurts. The fact of 00:05:34.75\00:05:38.46 the matter is that when our sins are pointed out we can be hurt 00:05:38.50\00:05:43.19 even to the point of tears. But so often we never even stop to 00:05:43.23\00:05:48.32 think how much God hurts over the level of deception that the 00:05:48.35\00:05:53.41 devil is allowed to pull on people and yet his own 00:05:53.44\00:05:56.95 spokespeople, his own ministers, his own mouth pieces, are afraid 00:05:56.99\00:06:01.15 to let the people know of the deception for fear he's going to 00:06:01.19\00:06:05.21 upset them and I think of the pain in God's heart and I know 00:06:05.25\00:06:08.86 that what drove Peter, we talked about this before, was not any 00:06:08.89\00:06:12.47 kind of attitude towards his hearers, but his love for 00:06:12.50\00:06:16.43 Christ and his love for the souls that Christ died for and 00:06:16.46\00:06:20.36 that's what led him to speak the way he did. 00:06:20.39\00:06:22.40 That's where I'm seeing this going. It wasn't a fear of the 00:06:22.44\00:06:26.62 people but a love for the people that led him to do what he did. 00:06:26.66\00:06:29.83 I mean it says right here in verse 13, the end of verse 13, 00:06:29.86\00:06:33.65 speaking about his servant Jesus whom you delivered up and denied 00:06:33.69\00:06:37.74 in the presence of Pilate when he was determined to let him 00:06:37.77\00:06:41.15 go, almost showing look, not only did you do this but he was 00:06:41.19\00:06:44.16 ready to let him go. You went above and beyond. He's trying to 00:06:44.19\00:06:47.13 help them to actually sense their guilt all the more. 00:06:47.16\00:06:50.05 Then he goes on and says, but you denied the Holy One and the 00:06:50.09\00:06:53.58 Just and asked for (of all things) a murderer to be granted 00:06:53.61\00:06:56.71 to you. So not only did you ask for somebody in the place but 00:06:56.75\00:06:59.97 you asked for a murderer. He's very clearly trying to point out 00:07:00.00\00:07:04.39 the true sense of their guilt. Why? I find it very interesting 00:07:04.43\00:07:08.50 that Peter does the same thing in this sermon and in the sermon 00:07:08.54\00:07:12.58 he gave in Acts chapter 2 in which he was very direct. 00:07:12.61\00:07:15.68 He was honest, he was totally honest. He was not sugarcoating 00:07:15.72\00:07:20.39 what happened. But then in verse 17 I find it very powerful that 00:07:20.42\00:07:24.97 he responds in chapter 3 verse 17 by saying, Yet now brethren 00:07:25.00\00:07:29.51 I know that you did it in ignorance. I mean, it's like 00:07:29.55\00:07:34.37 Jesus hanging on the cross, people shouting at him telling 00:07:34.40\00:07:39.16 him to come down from the cross if you're the Son of God and the 00:07:39.19\00:07:41.38 rest and Jesus says, Father forgive them for they know not 00:07:41.42\00:07:44.68 what they do. Here we see Peter giving them the benefit of the 00:07:44.71\00:07:47.94 doubt. And I see these two components to the preaching of 00:07:47.98\00:07:50.79 Peter that I think are needful in all of our witnessing. He is 00:07:50.82\00:07:55.83 honest and direct and he always accompanies that with grace and 00:07:55.87\00:07:59.97 hope. You see in Acts chapter 2 where he's honest and direct 00:08:00.00\00:08:03.77 about what they were guilty of and then he comes back by saying 00:08:03.81\00:08:07.76 this promise is to you and to your children. Repent. You'll 00:08:07.79\00:08:11.70 receive the Holy Spirit just as we. Here in Acts chapter 3 he's 00:08:11.74\00:08:15.61 direct. He points right in an honest way to what really 00:08:15.64\00:08:18.99 happened, he calls it what it is but then he gives them the 00:08:19.02\00:08:21.99 benefit of the doubt. And as I think about this with the 00:08:22.02\00:08:25.07 apostle Peter I can't help but think that part of the reason 00:08:25.10\00:08:28.07 that he gave them the benefit of the doubt was because he 00:08:28.11\00:08:31.66 recognized that there was a time when he thought he was right 00:08:31.70\00:08:36.08 but came to find out that he wasn't. He thought he would not 00:08:36.12\00:08:40.42 deny Jesus, he was quick to say that but realized that Jesus 00:08:40.45\00:08:44.43 knew him better than he knew himself and Peter in compassion 00:08:44.46\00:08:48.48 and sympathy for these people is being honest about their 00:08:48.52\00:08:52.61 situation and at the time offering them hope and having 00:08:52.64\00:08:56.67 a heart full of compassion and longing that they could find the 00:08:56.70\00:09:00.87 same freedom, the same forgiveness that he found and 00:09:00.91\00:09:04.16 that he experienced when he found a restoration with Jesus 00:09:04.19\00:09:08.29 after his denial. You know it makes me think of 00:09:08.33\00:09:10.72 the same elements in Jesus even with Peter when he was very 00:09:10.76\00:09:14.94 direct with Peter and said Peter before the rooster crows you're 00:09:14.98\00:09:18.91 going to deny me three times and he was very direct with him. 00:09:18.95\00:09:22.09 Of course Peter had just got done saying how faithful he was 00:09:22.12\00:09:25.81 going to be but Jesus turns around from that and says, but 00:09:25.84\00:09:29.55 Peter when you're converted strengthen your brethren. And so 00:09:29.58\00:09:33.13 you've got the directness but there's the call to repentance 00:09:33.17\00:09:37.05 and the open invitation. And Jim the sad thing about it is today 00:09:37.08\00:09:40.93 I don't think we see that combination because there are 00:09:40.97\00:09:44.83 a lot of messages that are all about acceptance and the message 00:09:44.87\00:09:48.46 of acceptance doesn't really need to offer the open 00:09:48.50\00:09:51.22 invitation because there's not the call to repentance there. 00:09:51.25\00:09:55.62 And I'm not saying that nobody should ever preach a message of 00:09:55.65\00:10:00.52 acceptance but there is a lack today of the nature of preaching 00:10:00.56\00:10:05.39 we're finding here. That's right. I think of one 00:10:05.43\00:10:08.45 minister who said you know Jesus receives us just the way we are 00:10:08.49\00:10:12.79 but he doesn't leave us that way and if our preaching is more 00:10:12.83\00:10:17.09 about accommodating the condition of... and our teaching 00:10:17.13\00:10:20.92 and our witnessing in general is more about trying to make 00:10:20.95\00:10:24.81 people feel about the condition that they're in and oftentimes 00:10:24.85\00:10:28.35 people need encouragement. We certainly don't want to take 00:10:28.39\00:10:31.82 away from the fact that people need to be encouraged. They need 00:10:31.86\00:10:35.42 to know that there is a Savior that can help them but we can't 00:10:35.45\00:10:38.74 as happened in the days of Jeremiah with the false prophets 00:10:38.78\00:10:43.48 heal the wound of God's people superficially by essentially 00:10:43.52\00:10:47.92 giving them a false sense of assurance that does not bring 00:10:47.96\00:10:52.06 conviction but as surely as it doesn't bring conviction they 00:10:52.10\00:10:55.91 see no need of repentance and repentance and finding the 00:10:55.95\00:10:59.88 forgiveness for that guilt is what brings peace. So we rob 00:10:59.91\00:11:03.85 people of peace when we don't follow the pattern that Peter 00:11:03.88\00:11:07.80 followed in Acts chapter 2 and Acts chapter 3. Honest, direct 00:11:07.84\00:11:11.90 preaching with a fervent love for souls followed by a fervent 00:11:11.93\00:11:15.96 appeal of grace and hope and the offer of salvation. 00:11:15.99\00:11:19.12 That's right. It's interesting that Peter then tacks on, I 00:11:19.16\00:11:23.14 don't want to say tacks on, but in the midst of that sermon he 00:11:23.18\00:11:27.59 brings up what Moses said in Deuteronomy in verses 22 and 23, 00:11:27.62\00:11:31.43 for Moses truly said to the fathers the Lord your God will 00:11:31.47\00:11:35.27 raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren. Him you 00:11:35.31\00:11:39.08 shall hear in all things whatever he says to you and it 00:11:39.11\00:11:42.28 shall be that every soul that will not hear that prophet shall 00:11:42.31\00:11:45.10 be utterly destroyed from among the people. Now this is where 00:11:45.13\00:11:48.30 Moses is foretelling Christ and Peter makes the application 00:11:48.33\00:11:51.68 using Moses who they trust and in essence saying here's the 00:11:51.72\00:11:55.10 prophet, he's come. You need to hear him. If you fail to hear 00:11:55.14\00:11:58.18 him all who fail to hear him will be destroyed from among my 00:11:58.22\00:12:01.23 people. Yeah and this takes me back to 00:12:01.26\00:12:03.53 Matthew chapter 17 where we're in that transfiguration on the 00:12:03.56\00:12:08.54 mount and God speaks from heaven and says this is my beloved Son 00:12:08.57\00:12:14.24 in whom I am well pleased. Hear him. This is the one that Moses 00:12:14.28\00:12:18.90 promised would be raised up from among his brethren that we 00:12:18.93\00:12:22.79 needed to hear or else be destroyed from among the people. 00:12:22.83\00:12:26.65 He's calling their attention to Jesus once again. 00:12:26.69\00:12:28.91 That's right. Of course the ministry of Jesus today is still 00:12:28.94\00:12:33.00 speaking to us all. Jesus is the one that was foretold to come. 00:12:33.03\00:12:37.28 Jesus is the one that we need to hear and Jesus is the one who 00:12:37.32\00:12:41.54 wants us, as Peter was a representative of him and said 00:12:41.57\00:12:45.37 look at me, so Jesus wants us to look at him and in looking at 00:12:45.40\00:12:49.88 him and giving him our attention and giving him our whole heart 00:12:49.91\00:12:54.49 just as that lame man was healed from an impossible illness, so 00:12:54.53\00:12:59.95 wherever we in our situation of sin as impossible as it may seem 00:12:59.98\00:13:04.43 if we give Jesus our attention he'll heal us too. Well I hope 00:13:04.47\00:13:08.06 you join us next time in the book of Acts. God bless you. 00:13:08.09\00:13:11.65
