Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.21\00:00:23.58 I'm Pastor Mark Howard and I'm here with my co-host my brother 00:00:23.61\00:00:26.37 Pastor Jim Howard. We are so excited to be studying the book 00:00:26.40\00:00:29.54 of Acts with you. I hope you have your Bibles today. 00:00:29.58\00:00:32.03 We're going to dive right into our study after a brief word of 00:00:32.06\00:00:35.19 prayer. We're going to be in Acts chapter 3 today and it's 00:00:35.22\00:00:38.43 an exciting story, but let's begin with a word of prayer. 00:00:38.46\00:00:41.60 Father in heaven we do thank you for your word. We thank you for 00:00:41.64\00:00:45.84 the Spirit of truth given to lead us into truth and we just 00:00:45.88\00:00:48.71 pray that he would lead our study today. In Jesus name we 00:00:48.74\00:00:51.54 pray. Amen. Now we've already seen some 00:00:51.58\00:00:54.77 exciting things in the book of Acts and how the early church 00:00:54.81\00:00:59.16 was just exploding under the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:00:59.19\00:01:02.53 Now we come to chapter 3 and we run into what starts out as 00:01:02.56\00:01:07.84 just kind of a regular day in the life of the apostles and I 00:01:07.87\00:01:11.47 suppose maybe it ends like a regular day in the life of the 00:01:11.50\00:01:14.39 apostles the way we see things go here, but we're going to Acts 00:01:14.42\00:01:17.27 chapter 3, verse 1, and the Bible says here: Now Peter and 00:01:17.31\00:01:20.62 John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, 00:01:20.65\00:01:25.02 the ninth hour, and a certain man, lame from his mother's womb 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.80 was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple 00:01:28.84\00:01:32.45 which was called Beautiful to ask alms from those who entered 00:01:32.48\00:01:36.33 the temple, who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple 00:01:36.37\00:01:41.82 asked for alms. And fixing his eyes on him with John Peter said 00:01:41.85\00:01:46.86 Look at us. So he gave them his attention expecting to receive 00:01:46.89\00:01:51.61 something from them. Then Peter said, silver and gold I do not 00:01:51.65\00:01:56.15 have but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ 00:01:56.19\00:02:00.66 of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right 00:02:00.69\00:02:05.06 hand and lifted him up and immediately (the Bible says) 00:02:05.10\00:02:09.80 his feet and ankle bones received strength so he, leaping 00:02:09.84\00:02:14.47 up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them walking and 00:02:14.51\00:02:20.04 leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking 00:02:20.08\00:02:23.72 and praising God and they knew that it was he who sat begging 00:02:23.76\00:02:27.07 alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple and they were filled 00:02:27.11\00:02:30.39 with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 00:02:30.43\00:02:35.23 Amazing story. That's a powerful story. 00:02:35.27\00:02:37.39 So what we see here, there's a few things that we pick up on. 00:02:37.43\00:02:41.59 I suppose we could look at this and say well Peter and John went 00:02:41.62\00:02:44.87 to the temple that day to heal the man. I think it's important 00:02:44.90\00:02:47.91 to note, and we're going to see this other places in the book of 00:02:47.95\00:02:50.92 Acts, that sometimes people get the idea today that the New 00:02:50.96\00:02:54.27 Testament church was disconnected from the 00:02:54.30\00:02:57.85 practices of Judaism excepting that they felt a need to reach 00:02:57.89\00:03:03.62 the Jews. But what we find is that the religion of Judaism was 00:03:03.65\00:03:09.35 full of gospel illustrations that were pointing people 00:03:09.38\00:03:13.41 forward to and preparing them for the reception of Christ. 00:03:13.44\00:03:17.40 It was the religion that God had given to his people. And so here 00:03:17.43\00:03:20.24 we find Peter and John going up to the temple. And somebody may 00:03:20.27\00:03:23.04 say well they went up to the temple because they knew they 00:03:23.07\00:03:24.61 knew they were going to find a man there. But we don't see that 00:03:24.64\00:03:28.19 because the Bible says they went up because it was the hour of 00:03:28.22\00:03:32.21 prayer and it says that they were about to go into the temple 00:03:32.25\00:03:35.94 so they had no intention, they weren't there to heal the lame 00:03:35.98\00:03:39.30 man. They had no intention of healing the lame man but it was 00:03:39.33\00:03:43.48 as they were passing by that he called out to them and asked for 00:03:43.51\00:03:47.63 alms and arrested their attention. It says there in 00:03:47.66\00:03:51.99 verse 3, Seeing them about to go into the temple asked for alms. 00:03:52.03\00:03:56.56 Yeah, it's funny though when you say that he arrested their 00:03:56.59\00:04:00.03 attention, it doesn't appear that they had yet arrested his. 00:04:00.07\00:04:03.47 That's right. It's almost like at the toll 00:04:03.51\00:04:05.93 booth or somewhere where someone is mindlessly sort of 00:04:05.96\00:04:09.22 going through the motions. He's probably been asking for alms 00:04:09.26\00:04:13.93 people walking by and he's kind of become a little bit numb to 00:04:13.96\00:04:17.70 the reality that most people are not really doing much to help 00:04:17.73\00:04:21.44 him. Well I think to myself of as you 00:04:21.47\00:04:23.35 mentioned somebody who's in a routine. You think of the 00:04:23.39\00:04:26.46 Salvation Army bell ringers at the holiday seasons. They're 00:04:26.50\00:04:29.85 ringing that bell and when I give I don't stop often and get 00:04:29.89\00:04:33.18 into a long conversation. I'll throw something in and move 00:04:33.22\00:04:35.85 and they're used to that and they're ringing and thank you 00:04:35.89\00:04:38.42 and thank you and they're not really paying a lot of attention 00:04:38.45\00:04:41.22 and it's very likely that people have tossed money his way 00:04:41.25\00:04:43.98 but there was no long interchange with anybody. 00:04:44.02\00:04:47.23 Right. No bonding happening. But it's important that the 00:04:47.26\00:04:50.55 apostles wanted his attention. He points it out right here in 00:04:50.59\00:04:55.56 verse 4 where it says, And fixing his eyes on him with John 00:04:55.60\00:05:00.00 Peter said, Look at us. So he's calling his attention to them. 00:05:00.04\00:05:04.40 And in verse 5 it says, So he gave them his attention and 00:05:04.44\00:05:07.93 then he expects to receive something from them. This just 00:05:07.97\00:05:11.39 reminds me of so many places in the Bible where there is a very 00:05:11.42\00:05:15.49 intentional effort to draw the attention of someone who's about 00:05:15.53\00:05:19.62 to receive healing or receive some gift from God to get their 00:05:19.65\00:05:24.88 wholehearted attention. I think of the blind man who Jesus asked 00:05:24.92\00:05:28.70 a question that seemed a little bit odd at the time. He said, 00:05:28.74\00:05:32.81 what do you want me to do for you? And he said, That I may 00:05:32.84\00:05:36.62 receive my sight. It seemed obvious but Jesus wanted to draw 00:05:36.66\00:05:40.40 out of that man his full attention and his whole heart. 00:05:40.43\00:05:43.93 I think of the woman who wanted to have her flow of blood healed 00:05:43.96\00:05:49.42 and she's looking to find a way to get to Jesus and she goes 00:05:49.46\00:05:53.31 ahead and reaches out and touches the hem of his garment, 00:05:53.34\00:05:57.00 and the Bible says virtue or power came out from Jesus. 00:05:57.03\00:06:00.62 But he didn't just keep walking and let her sneak off like she 00:06:00.65\00:06:03.38 wanted to. He stopped and he said, Who touched me? And he 00:06:03.41\00:06:07.35 wanted to get her attention. He wanted to have that encounter 00:06:07.39\00:06:11.96 with her. And I find that this story draws out the fact that 00:06:11.99\00:06:17.91 God does not give healing, give power, give forgiveness, give 00:06:17.95\00:06:23.83 overcoming victory to the Christian that is halfhearted 00:06:23.87\00:06:28.09 and casual and just holding out a bucket and hoping God will 00:06:28.13\00:06:32.58 throw something in it. 00:06:32.61\00:06:34.00 You know that makes me think of and I have something to add on 00:06:34.03\00:06:37.40 that, but it makes me think of a statement in one of my favorite 00:06:37.44\00:06:40.35 books, Steps to Christ. There's a chapter that deals with the 00:06:40.39\00:06:43.89 important of our wholehearted consecration to God and it makes 00:06:43.92\00:06:48.35 a point that because God wants to cleanse and transform the 00:06:48.38\00:06:52.28 whole heart, he needs the whole heart in order to do that. 00:06:52.31\00:06:56.67 So I can't help but think in these examples that the Lord, if 00:06:56.70\00:07:00.64 he's going to change the whole person then he has to have the 00:07:00.68\00:07:04.58 whole person. That's right. And it's not 00:07:04.62\00:07:06.66 something that he is arbitrarily requiring but something that's 00:07:06.69\00:07:10.07 a necessity if any change is really going to come. 00:07:10.10\00:07:12.36 That's what happened here. It takes me back to that very well 00:07:12.40\00:07:16.43 known, but I think, very important passage that we need 00:07:16.46\00:07:19.39 to remember here in Jeremiah 29:13 where the promise is 00:07:19.42\00:07:22.27 given there. It's during the time of the Babylonian captivity 00:07:22.31\00:07:26.20 but ultimately it speaks down to our day where he says You will 00:07:26.23\00:07:30.08 seek me and find me when you search for me with all your 00:07:30.12\00:07:33.82 heart. And it's all our heart that God is asking for. Right 00:07:33.86\00:07:38.02 here these apostles, they point to this man and say look at me. 00:07:38.05\00:07:42.15 They need to know that he is expecting something and that he 00:07:42.19\00:07:45.86 is looking longingly and they need his heart before this 00:07:45.90\00:07:49.54 miracle can be a reality. 00:07:49.57\00:07:50.94 And he needs our attention. I think that's important for us to 00:07:50.97\00:07:53.84 remember and for our viewers to remember today that sometimes 00:07:53.88\00:07:57.56 in the Christian experience we can feel like God's not hearing 00:07:57.59\00:08:01.41 us, but there are many times when we are holding back from 00:08:01.44\00:08:05.29 him. We are not letting go, we're not opening our whole 00:08:05.33\00:08:08.53 heart to him and we know it. Conviction is telling us, the 00:08:08.56\00:08:11.69 Holy Spirit is telling us, give everything over to him and we're 00:08:11.72\00:08:14.47 saying well I'm not ready for that yet. We're going to kind of 00:08:14.51\00:08:19.03 play this half and half wait and see. But we'll never experience 00:08:19.06\00:08:23.55 that transforming and that forgiving and redemptive power 00:08:23.58\00:08:27.31 of Christ until we're willing to give him all. 00:08:27.34\00:08:30.27 Amen. Now Peter had a very different type of interaction 00:08:30.31\00:08:35.28 here. In fact, as you read through the account in some ways 00:08:35.31\00:08:40.25 there was almost a nonchalance. 00:08:40.29\00:08:42.62 To me this is one of the most amazing parts of the passage. 00:08:42.66\00:08:46.52 I want to rephrase that. It's one of the greatest rebukes to 00:08:46.56\00:08:50.17 me when I read through this. Because when Peter heals the 00:08:50.20\00:08:53.35 man... Now you're looking at this man. He's been lame from 00:08:53.39\00:08:58.23 his mother's womb. When your lame from the womb, I mean... 00:08:58.26\00:09:03.62 It's one of those situations that is a healing of a person 00:09:03.65\00:09:08.56 who's lame from the womb is a mighty miracle, as if it would 00:09:08.60\00:09:13.04 not be a miracle anyway. But the whole crowd is amazed. That's 00:09:13.08\00:09:16.70 what it says at the end of verse 10, They were filled with wonder 00:09:16.74\00:09:20.33 and amazement at what had happened to the lame man. 00:09:20.37\00:09:23.19 But then we read on. It says in verse 11, Now as the lame man 00:09:23.22\00:09:27.57 who was healed held onto Peter and John. All the people ran 00:09:27.61\00:09:30.99 together to them in the porch which is called Solomon's 00:09:31.03\00:09:34.35 greatly amazed. So when Peter saw it he said I'm amazed too. 00:09:34.38\00:09:39.12 No, he says men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Why do 00:09:39.15\00:09:43.41 do you marvel or why do you look so intently at us as though by 00:09:43.45\00:09:47.68 our own power or godliness we have made this man walk. 00:09:47.71\00:09:50.35 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers 00:09:50.39\00:09:53.18 glorified his servant Jesus whom you delivered up and 00:09:53.21\00:09:56.47 denied in the presence of Pilate. You know, you bring the 00:09:56.50\00:09:59.72 convicting sermon. But what hits me here is if I were to rephrase 00:09:59.76\00:10:04.41 it Peter basically says, I mean the crowd is amazed and 00:10:04.44\00:10:07.07 Peter basically responds by saying what do you expect? 00:10:07.11\00:10:09.67 This is the power of Jesus. I think to myself of a friend of 00:10:09.70\00:10:14.45 mine who was doing Bible work in an area. In fact, he and another 00:10:14.48\00:10:18.78 guy, partner, were doing Bible work, they were going around 00:10:18.82\00:10:20.89 that is they were going house to house and they were offering 00:10:20.93\00:10:23.54 to study the Bible with people. They came across one woman who 00:10:23.57\00:10:26.15 had had several people by of different persuasions, 00:10:26.18\00:10:31.44 denominational persuasions, and she said you know I'm studying 00:10:31.47\00:10:34.43 with all these other people and honestly I think I'm pretty 00:10:34.47\00:10:37.75 booked up with studies, thanks for coming by, etc., and they 00:10:37.78\00:10:41.23 said well they gave her their material and they said well we'd 00:10:41.27\00:10:44.04 like to stop back. Well sure, but I'm going to tell you right 00:10:44.07\00:10:46.81 now I'm probably going to be tied up with other studies. 00:10:46.85\00:10:50.60 Anyway they went and they prayed about it and asked the Lord to 00:10:50.63\00:10:55.76 intervene. And the next week they came back and when they 00:10:55.79\00:10:58.72 went into this woman's home she said all her other material 00:10:58.76\00:11:01.33 she'd gotten rid of and she says I'm studying with you guys. 00:11:01.36\00:11:04.77 So they asked her what made the difference and she said I prayed 00:11:04.81\00:11:08.18 about it and the Lord spoke to me and he said this is who I 00:11:08.21\00:11:12.25 want you to study with. Anyway, they go out to the car after 00:11:12.29\00:11:16.26 that visit and my friend is just like Hallelujah, praise the Lord 00:11:16.29\00:11:20.72 I can't believe it. Did you hear that. And he was looking at his 00:11:20.76\00:11:24.55 friend and he said did you hear that. And his friend looks at 00:11:24.58\00:11:28.28 him and he says well what did you expect. You know, we asked 00:11:28.32\00:11:31.55 the Lord. And that's what I see with Peter and that's where I 00:11:31.59\00:11:34.79 say it's a rebuke to me. I think to myself, Peter had an 00:11:34.82\00:11:39.64 expectant faith. In other words, he believed that the Lord was... 00:11:39.67\00:11:43.88 What does Paul say that he who comes to the Lord must believe 00:11:43.92\00:11:49.25 that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently 00:11:49.28\00:11:53.13 seek him. And that's what we were just talking about. Peter 00:11:53.16\00:11:56.99 believed. He was expectant and that expectation paid off and I 00:11:57.02\00:12:00.73 wonder to myself sometimes as I look at my experience, am I as 00:12:00.77\00:12:04.44 expectant as Peter was. And too often I have to say that I need 00:12:04.48\00:12:08.12 to say Lord increase my faith. 00:12:08.16\00:12:09.83 Amen. Me too, me too. You know this particular miracle is 00:12:09.86\00:12:14.80 fascinating and it is really the opening of the way for the early 00:12:14.83\00:12:20.48 church in terms of miracles. We saw in Acts 2 this supernatural 00:12:20.52\00:12:24.89 outpouring of the Holy Spirit. But in terms of a miracle, like 00:12:24.92\00:12:28.83 the people were used to seeing when Jesus walked the earth this 00:12:28.86\00:12:32.41 is the first time where they see something like that happen and 00:12:32.44\00:12:35.99 you now you have to think there was a period there when people 00:12:36.02\00:12:39.53 began to be a little bit discouraged because Jesus had 00:12:39.57\00:12:43.15 gone and lame and crippled and others who had come to the 00:12:43.19\00:12:47.03 temple to be healed by Jesus found nothing, no hope. And so 00:12:47.07\00:12:52.14 here we have this new hope that is given when the disciples 00:12:52.17\00:12:56.52 are found to have the same power of God that Jesus had. 00:12:56.56\00:13:00.29 This is an incredible miracle and furthermore it's a very 00:13:00.33\00:13:03.99 public miracle. I noticed that as you look through the book of 00:13:04.03\00:13:07.89 Acts, especially in the founding of the early church, God was 00:13:07.93\00:13:11.47 establishing the credibility of the early church with these 00:13:11.50\00:13:14.40 supernatural manifestations throughout the book of Acts 00:13:14.43\00:13:17.58 and especially here in the beginning. This created a stir 00:13:17.62\00:13:20.64 among the people and that's what God was attempting to do. 00:13:20.68\00:13:23.63 I mean right here as you stated in verse 2 it says a certain man 00:13:23.67\00:13:27.55 lame from his mother's womb. That's why it says in verse 10 00:13:27.59\00:13:31.21 that they were fill with wonder and amazement at what happened 00:13:31.24\00:13:34.77 to him because this was not any ordinary miracle, this was a 00:13:34.80\00:13:38.18 case of impossibility. This is somebody who didn't have the 00:13:38.21\00:13:41.17 raw materials in their body, they had never been able to walk 00:13:41.21\00:13:44.13 before so how would they possibly be able to walk now. 00:13:44.17\00:13:46.90 Here with this healing God was getting their attention and he 00:13:46.93\00:13:51.76 was about to have another large harvest of souls because of this 00:13:51.79\00:13:56.44 opening miracle. So we're going to find out how Peter follows 00:13:56.47\00:14:01.09 this miracle with a very powerful address. But before we 00:14:01.12\00:14:04.76 do we have to go to a break. So at this time we're going to 00:14:04.79\00:14:07.95 take a short break and we'll be back to study the Book of Acts 00:14:07.98\00:14:11.10 after a few moments. 00:14:11.14\00:14:12.51
