Welcome back to "Books of the Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We here are studying in the Book of Acts today 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.57 and right before the break, 00:00:04.60\00:00:07.08 we were talking about Peter's sermon 00:00:07.11\00:00:11.23 that brought that conviction. 00:00:11.26\00:00:13.12 He-He, first of all, took the prophecy of Joel 00:00:13.15\00:00:15.58 and then the prophecy of the Psalms 00:00:15.61\00:00:18.42 and he applied that prophecy, 00:00:18.45\00:00:20.56 that David had given to the Messiah 00:00:20.59\00:00:23.99 and this was new for the Jews that were listening to him. 00:00:24.02\00:00:26.52 This gripped their hearts and the Bible says 00:00:26.55\00:00:30.46 that they were cut to the heart, and they said, you know, 00:00:30.49\00:00:33.09 "Man and brother, what shall we do?" 00:00:33.12\00:00:34.49 They were, they, they in that moment, 00:00:34.52\00:00:37.27 they saw their role in crucifying, 00:00:37.30\00:00:40.27 in murdering their own Messiah. 00:00:40.30\00:00:42.65 And you can only imagine 00:00:42.68\00:00:44.05 the weight of conviction on their hearts 00:00:44.08\00:00:47.59 and what a desperate and hopeless place to be in. 00:00:47.62\00:00:52.48 Absolutely, and you know, 00:00:52.51\00:00:54.48 being that they were in that place, 00:00:54.51\00:00:57.37 it put Peter in a position of opportunity, 00:00:57.40\00:01:01.32 really, because Peter as one of the disciples certainly was- 00:01:01.35\00:01:08.73 taking a lot of accusations and things like that 00:01:08.76\00:01:11.55 about the sect of Jesus and His followers, 00:01:11.58\00:01:14.54 and certainly, the pressure of that led him to deny Jesus 00:01:14.57\00:01:19.10 back before His death, and you know, 00:01:19.13\00:01:21.11 now Peter is in a different type of situation 00:01:21.14\00:01:24.08 and it's very clear that Jesus is on the throne 00:01:24.11\00:01:28.01 and these people who were guilty 00:01:28.04\00:01:31.24 are now in a very vulnerable position, 00:01:31.27\00:01:35.58 and Peter could have tried to get even 00:01:35.61\00:01:37.77 as it were, and cut them off. Oh, yeah. 00:01:37.80\00:01:40.38 But instead of cutting them off, 00:01:40.41\00:01:42.40 I want you to know that Peter had a love for these souls. 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.75 The Holy Spirit is never poured out to bring conviction 00:01:45.78\00:01:50.73 and guilt only to leave someone 00:01:50.76\00:01:53.37 without salvation. That's right. 00:01:53.40\00:01:55.05 Every time the Holy Spirit was poured out 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.57 like on the day of Pentecost, 00:01:57.60\00:01:59.09 it was for the salvation of souls. 00:01:59.12\00:02:01.28 We're reminded that God did not send His Son 00:02:01.31\00:02:03.74 into the world to condemn the world, 00:02:03.77\00:02:05.89 but that the world through Him might be saved. 00:02:05.92\00:02:07.63 You know, that's an important point, Jim. 00:02:07.66\00:02:09.62 It's not just for the purpose of chastisement 00:02:09.65\00:02:12.05 and there is sometimes that people 00:02:12.08\00:02:13.79 in the church get the idea, when they hear a pointed message 00:02:13.82\00:02:19.90 and there needs to be pointed messages, 00:02:19.93\00:02:22.49 but they can get the idea that, that pointed message- 00:02:22.52\00:02:24.80 and the person giving that pointed message 00:02:24.83\00:02:27.08 is just really getting even with those hard-hearted stubborn, 00:02:27.11\00:02:31.44 saints. 00:02:31.47\00:02:33.01 When the reality is, the man who is inspired- 00:02:33.04\00:02:36.74 who is motivated by the Spirit of God 00:02:36.77\00:02:39.66 is only giving a message like that in order to, 00:02:39.69\00:02:42.97 by the grace of God, see a person brought to a position 00:02:43.00\00:02:46.15 where they'll be open to receiving a transformation 00:02:46.18\00:02:50.03 through the Lord, to receive repentance, 00:02:50.06\00:02:51.54 and that's what we see here. 00:02:51.57\00:02:52.94 That's exactly what we see here. 00:02:52.97\00:02:54.34 Because now, in verse 37, they say "Men and brethren, 00:02:54.37\00:02:56.91 what shall we do?" 00:02:56.94\00:02:58.41 They are opening themselves up, 00:02:58.44\00:02:59.85 making themselves vulnerable to the apostles 00:02:59.88\00:03:02.07 and Peter rather than taking advantage to get even, 00:03:02.10\00:03:05.87 says some of the most beautiful words in the scripture. 00:03:05.90\00:03:08.52 He says, in verse 38, then Peter said to them, 00:03:08.55\00:03:10.38 "Repent and let every one of you be baptized 00:03:10.41\00:03:13.12 in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission," 00:03:13.15\00:03:15.40 that is the forgiveness of sins. 00:03:15.43\00:03:17.06 Your sins can be forgiven, 00:03:17.09\00:03:19.10 and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, 00:03:19.13\00:03:21.22 you can be placed on equal ground with where we are today. 00:03:21.25\00:03:24.25 Verse 39, "For the promise is to you, 00:03:24.28\00:03:27.22 and to your children, and to all who are far off, 00:03:27.25\00:03:30.31 as many as the Lord our God will call." Oh, wow. 00:03:30.34\00:03:32.58 He just opens wide the door of salvation 00:03:32.61\00:03:35.40 and it's no wonder that you see the response that you see here. 00:03:35.43\00:03:38.73 That's right, and viewer, if you ever have felt far off, 00:03:38.76\00:03:42.35 if perhaps today you are watching 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.49 and you're feeling far off from the Lord, 00:03:44.52\00:03:46.42 just remember the promises for you. 00:03:46.45\00:03:48.62 The Lord Jesus is in the business of saving souls 00:03:48.65\00:03:51.04 and the Bible says, "He can save to the uttermost all, 00:03:51.07\00:03:53.25 who come to God through Him." Amen. 00:03:53.28\00:03:54.98 And so, it's a powerful message here that Peter gives. 00:03:55.01\00:03:57.49 Now before, Jim, there was something else 00:03:57.52\00:03:59.12 you're gonna jump into, but before we do that, 00:03:59.15\00:04:01.55 I want to highlight something Peter says 00:04:01.58\00:04:03.46 and this may be new to some of our viewers, 00:04:03.49\00:04:05.25 this thought that Peter brings up something here in his sermon 00:04:05.28\00:04:09.45 that was understood by his hearers, 00:04:09.48\00:04:12.59 but in Christianity today, 00:04:12.62\00:04:14.01 it might get lost sight of a little bit 00:04:14.04\00:04:15.99 and that is where David was. 00:04:16.02\00:04:19.70 You know, he tells us as his evidence 00:04:19.73\00:04:22.33 that the prophecy of David was pointing forward to Christ 00:04:22.36\00:04:25.85 and not speaking of David himself. 00:04:25.88\00:04:27.93 His evidence is, in verse 29, 00:04:27.96\00:04:30.13 "Men and brethren, let me speak to you freely 00:04:30.16\00:04:32.67 or speak freely to you of the patriarch David 00:04:32.70\00:04:35.74 that he is both dead and buried, 00:04:35.77\00:04:37.83 and his tomb is with us to this day." 00:04:37.86\00:04:40.84 Something that is- is taught in scripture 00:04:40.87\00:04:44.04 and has been clouded because of certain Greek philosophies 00:04:44.07\00:04:50.15 and ideologies that'd been woven into Christian understanding 00:04:50.18\00:04:55.24 throughout the thousand years plus of the dark ages 00:04:55.27\00:04:58.45 when people didn't have the Bible to study, 00:04:58.48\00:05:00.82 is the idea that man has an immortal soul. 00:05:00.85\00:05:05.04 And it's a very common teaching, 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.03 but it's not a biblical teaching. 00:05:07.06\00:05:08.43 The Bible tells us in 1 Timothy 6, 00:05:08.46\00:05:11.42 that "God alone has immortality 00:05:11.45\00:05:14.08 and that, that immortality is conferred as a gift 00:05:14.11\00:05:16.72 whosoever believeth in Him, should have everlasting life." 00:05:16.75\00:05:20.14 And Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15 00:05:20.17\00:05:22.36 that-that we put on that immortality 00:05:22.39\00:05:24.73 when Jesus comes again, and so, man is not naturally immortal, 00:05:24.76\00:05:29.89 the Bible says, in Romans 2, that man seeks for immortality, 00:05:29.92\00:05:33.37 and one of the important things, aspects of that is that 00:05:33.40\00:05:36.98 if we have an inherent immortality, 00:05:37.01\00:05:39.32 then the reality is 00:05:39.35\00:05:40.98 that we really are not in need of it. That's right. 00:05:41.01\00:05:43.37 But if we don't have immortality and we're seeking for it, 00:05:43.40\00:05:46.13 there's only one place we'll find it 00:05:46.16\00:05:47.53 and that place is in Jesus Christ, 00:05:47.56\00:05:48.93 and that's what Peter is wanting to get across here 00:05:48.96\00:05:51.86 among other things, and he says that, 00:05:51.89\00:05:53.95 "David has not, his tomb is with us to this day, 00:05:53.98\00:05:59.38 he is dead and buried," and somebody may say, 00:05:59.41\00:06:02.28 "Well, his tomb maybe with us and his body is with us, 00:06:02.31\00:06:05.36 but his spirit has ascended." 00:06:05.39\00:06:09.53 Peter is very clear in verse 34 00:06:09.56\00:06:11.47 "For David did not ascended into the heavens." 00:06:11.50\00:06:14.40 And this just matches the rest of the scripture, 00:06:14.43\00:06:16.77 because Jesus was very clear 00:06:16.80\00:06:18.92 that the only way to ascend into the heavens for us 00:06:18.95\00:06:22.53 to ascending the heavens outside of a miraculous like, 00:06:22.56\00:06:26.37 Elijah being taken up and translated, 00:06:26.40\00:06:28.68 is for Jesus to come back. 00:06:28.71\00:06:30.65 He says, in John 14, "I will come again 00:06:30.68\00:06:33.28 and receive you to myself, why? 00:06:33.31\00:06:36.23 That where I am, there you maybe also." Right. 00:06:36.26\00:06:39.10 So the picture is that if you want- 00:06:39.13\00:06:40.71 if I want you to be with me where I am. 00:06:40.74\00:06:42.75 I am gonna have to come back and get you." 00:06:42.78\00:06:44.75 Same thing happens in 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 00:06:44.78\00:06:47.76 it says, "The Lord Himself will dissent from heaven 00:06:47.79\00:06:49.46 with the shout," and says, 00:06:49.49\00:06:50.91 "The dead in Christ will rise" and then it says, 00:06:50.94\00:06:53.98 "That those who are alive 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.38 and remain will be called up together with them 00:06:55.41\00:06:56.78 in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air," 00:06:56.81\00:06:58.33 and then it says, "and thus or in this way, 00:06:58.36\00:07:01.49 shall we always be with the Lord." That's right. 00:07:01.52\00:07:03.22 So the way that we go to be with the Lord 00:07:03.25\00:07:05.14 is at the second coming of Christ, 00:07:05.17\00:07:06.54 that's why the second coming of Christ 00:07:06.57\00:07:07.94 becomes that blessed reunion, 00:07:07.97\00:07:09.45 that blessed hope for humanity. That's right. 00:07:09.48\00:07:12.55 Now, we're gonna look at the early church 00:07:12.58\00:07:14.36 in the make up of- 00:07:14.39\00:07:15.76 of some of the fellowship of the early church 00:07:15.79\00:07:17.81 as it was burgeoning here and coming into, 00:07:17.84\00:07:20.94 you know, three thousand souls, 00:07:20.97\00:07:22.69 you can only imagine what that did. 00:07:22.72\00:07:24.22 Yes. To the church. 00:07:24.25\00:07:25.81 Well, we need to move down to verse 40 00:07:25.84\00:07:29.01 because here is where it picks up on 00:07:29.04\00:07:30.62 some of what happened 00:07:30.65\00:07:32.02 as a result of the wonderful preaching 00:07:32.05\00:07:33.92 and outpouring of the Holy Spirit on that day. 00:07:33.95\00:07:36.02 It says in verse 40 of Acts 2, 00:07:36.05\00:07:38.53 "And with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, 00:07:38.56\00:07:42.16 saying be saved from this perverse generation. 00:07:42.19\00:07:45.51 Then those who gladly-" 00:07:45.54\00:07:47.18 and so there's many different words he used, okay, we don't- 00:07:47.21\00:07:50.02 It would be wonderful when we find out all of that sermon. 00:07:50.05\00:07:52.72 But at this point all we know is 00:07:52.75\00:07:54.21 it had something to do with "be saved." Right. 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.57 If you're in a-you're in a bad condition, be saved. 00:07:56.60\00:07:59.34 And as a result, in verse 41, it says, 00:07:59.37\00:08:01.21 "Those who gladly received his word were baptized 00:08:01.24\00:08:04.87 and that day about three thousand souls 00:08:04.90\00:08:06.89 were added to them." 00:08:06.92\00:08:08.29 That's what we need today. 00:08:08.32\00:08:09.69 We need that kind of power of the Holy Spirit 00:08:09.72\00:08:12.60 and we are promised that that's going to come. Absolutely. 00:08:12.63\00:08:14.95 But I'm wondering, just exactly how we would handle it. 00:08:14.98\00:08:17.77 You notice here in verse 42, it says that the apostles had 00:08:17.80\00:08:22.07 something special in that early church, 00:08:22.10\00:08:24.19 I want to- I want to look at that. 00:08:24.22\00:08:25.75 Verse 42 says "And they continued steadfastly." 00:08:25.78\00:08:30.28 So, after this group was baptized 00:08:30.31\00:08:32.98 and were added to the church, that wasn't it. 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.90 They continued. 00:08:35.93\00:08:37.30 Now, too often, I think today, as we look into our churches, 00:08:37.33\00:08:41.32 we have a strong focus on baptism 00:08:41.35\00:08:43.47 and we should because the great commission says to go 00:08:43.50\00:08:45.43 and baptize in the name of the Father 00:08:45.46\00:08:46.89 and Son and Holy Spirit. It also says to make disciples. 00:08:46.92\00:08:50.24 Teaching them- that's right. 00:08:50.27\00:08:51.64 Teaching them to observe and to make disciples 00:08:51.67\00:08:54.10 and really you haven't made a disciple 00:08:54.13\00:08:56.73 until you have groomed someone to minister 00:08:56.76\00:09:01.31 like the master. That's right. 00:09:01.34\00:09:02.71 To be like Jesus, and too often, we work hard. 00:09:02.74\00:09:07.04 We, often times we'll study the Bible with someone 00:09:07.07\00:09:09.43 who's interested, and we'll study week after week after week 00:09:09.46\00:09:12.81 and we spend so much time and give them so much attention 00:09:12.84\00:09:15.73 and then after the baptism, 00:09:15.76\00:09:17.50 we go to study with someone else, 00:09:17.53\00:09:19.19 and they are left wondering, what happened? 00:09:19.22\00:09:22.85 We give them a sack lunch and send them on their way 00:09:22.88\00:09:25.01 and wish them well. That's right. 00:09:25.04\00:09:26.56 We hope you show up for church 00:09:26.59\00:09:27.96 and prayer meeting. That's right. 00:09:27.99\00:09:29.36 And the problem with that is, 00:09:29.39\00:09:31.47 it's not matching the Biblical model. That's right. 00:09:31.50\00:09:33.96 Because right here, it says, 00:09:33.99\00:09:35.36 "That these continued steadfastly" 00:09:35.39\00:09:38.06 and this mentions a few specific areas, 00:09:38.09\00:09:39.81 I think we would do well to recognize," 00:09:39.84\00:09:41.78 they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine." 00:09:41.81\00:09:45.16 In other words, they continued studying the word, 00:09:45.19\00:09:48.04 seeing the evidence for their faith, 00:09:48.07\00:09:49.63 building their foundation in the word. 00:09:49.66\00:09:52.67 "They also continued in fellowship, 00:09:52.70\00:09:54.78 and in the breaking of bread." 00:09:54.81\00:09:56.41 So this fellowship had to do with eating together 00:09:56.44\00:10:00.15 and fellowshipping together in spiritual-socializing- 00:10:00.18\00:10:05.43 This wasn't just fellowship meal, 00:10:05.46\00:10:08.00 you know, one of the things I have run into as a pastor is, 00:10:08.03\00:10:10.39 a lot of members are- aren't feeling comfortable 00:10:10.42\00:10:14.67 to have people over into their space 00:10:14.70\00:10:16.59 and so when we go to a fellowship meal at the church, 00:10:16.62\00:10:19.18 this isn't fellowship meal fellowship 00:10:19.21\00:10:21.19 because it says, in verse 46, 00:10:21.22\00:10:24.62 "That they continue daily in the temple, 00:10:24.65\00:10:27.35 and breaking bread from house to house." That's right. 00:10:27.38\00:10:29.27 This was in a home fellowship. 00:10:29.30\00:10:31.04 And furthermore, and I think very significantly 00:10:31.07\00:10:33.46 at the end of verse 42, it says "And in prayers" 00:10:33.49\00:10:37.21 so this wasn't just social time. 00:10:37.24\00:10:39.34 It's possible that we can have secular fellowship 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.98 with church friends. That's true. 00:10:43.01\00:10:44.94 And this is not what they had, they mingled prayer, 00:10:44.97\00:10:48.48 they were having spiritual encounters 00:10:48.51\00:10:50.30 where they were sharpening 00:10:50.33\00:10:51.70 and growing one another in the Lord. That's right. 00:10:51.73\00:10:54.03 And one thing that grabs my attention 00:10:54.06\00:10:55.54 also there in verse 46 is, it tells us that 00:10:55.57\00:10:59.41 "As they went from house to house, 00:10:59.44\00:11:01.11 they ate their food 00:11:01.14\00:11:02.51 with gladness and simplicity of heart." 00:11:02.54\00:11:04.93 Now it's interesting, that word simplicity, 00:11:04.96\00:11:06.54 its different words in different translations, 00:11:06.57\00:11:08.35 but the Greek word means to be free from stones, 00:11:08.38\00:11:11.30 like a pathway that's had the stones taken out. 00:11:11.33\00:11:13.83 In other words, it's an unencumbered pathway. 00:11:13.86\00:11:17.38 These were people who-just got done telling us 00:11:17.41\00:11:21.34 that they sold off possessions, 00:11:21.37\00:11:23.08 many of them, and we'll see that more. 00:11:23.11\00:11:24.48 To help people as they had need. That's right. 00:11:24.51\00:11:26.21 But they themselves were unencumbered 00:11:26.24\00:11:29.69 by the things of this life. 00:11:29.72\00:11:31.09 They weren't- they didn't let their jobs get in the way 00:11:31.12\00:11:33.99 or they didn't let their pastimes get in the way. 00:11:34.02\00:11:38.24 You know, it reminds me of some friends of mine who, 00:11:38.27\00:11:40.85 I had the privilege of baptizing 00:11:40.88\00:11:42.57 and I remember going over to their home 00:11:42.60\00:11:43.97 and looking on the refrigerator and they had a calendar there 00:11:44.00\00:11:46.84 and I was just, you know, waiting for them to come out 00:11:46.87\00:11:50.13 from where they were and I was glancing at their calendar, 00:11:50.16\00:11:52.57 and I noticed something beautiful about the calendar, 00:11:52.60\00:11:54.73 every pastor would hope that 00:11:54.76\00:11:56.13 this-that a calendar would look like this. 00:11:56.16\00:11:58.18 On the calendar, they had the church Sabbath events, 00:11:58.21\00:12:02.61 prayer meeting, outreach events, 00:12:02.64\00:12:05.16 all the different events of the church, 00:12:05.19\00:12:06.86 all the different functions, 00:12:06.89\00:12:08.26 their life was invested in the church. 00:12:08.29\00:12:10.23 Everything else, they built around that. 00:12:10.26\00:12:13.64 And too often, I don't know if you have encountered this, 00:12:13.67\00:12:16.51 but though that is the picture of the Book of Acts, 00:12:16.54\00:12:18.95 that's not what often happens today. 00:12:18.98\00:12:20.76 No, no, no, it's- It's my son's soccer game 00:12:20.79\00:12:22.76 and my daughter's, you know, 00:12:22.79\00:12:25.82 roller skating event and it's my, 00:12:25.85\00:12:28.62 you know, the work picnic and, "oh, I'm sorry, 00:12:28.65\00:12:30.70 I don't have time to come out 00:12:30.73\00:12:32.10 to the church events." That's right. 00:12:32.13\00:12:34.10 And often we say, that's because we are doing that 00:12:34.13\00:12:38.13 because we want to stay balanced, 00:12:38.16\00:12:40.26 but boy, when I look at the balance of the early church, 00:12:40.29\00:12:43.27 the balance was they were unencumbered by those things, 00:12:43.30\00:12:46.30 so they had simplicity. 00:12:46.33\00:12:48.34 Simplicity of hearts, simplicity in their life, 00:12:48.37\00:12:49.96 the reason they were willing to sell 00:12:49.99\00:12:51.69 to give to those who had need 00:12:51.72\00:12:53.41 was because they weren't married to all of their possessions, 00:12:53.44\00:12:56.59 they weren't married to their hobbies and habits. 00:12:56.62\00:12:59.04 They were married to Christ. Amen. 00:12:59.07\00:13:01.05 And they had given their life fully to Him. That's right. 00:13:01.08\00:13:04.76 They were married to Christ, Jim, 00:13:04.79\00:13:06.41 and Christ was married to them. 00:13:06.44\00:13:08.07 Christ's desire-His greatest desire is for His church. 00:13:08.10\00:13:12.21 Jesus came to seek and save that which is lost, 00:13:12.24\00:13:15.55 that passion consumed the heart of the early church. 00:13:15.58\00:13:19.37 Jesus wants that compassion to consume our hearts too. 00:13:19.40\00:13:23.05 May God help us to follow in the footsteps of our Master. 00:13:23.08\00:13:26.63 See you next time. 00:13:26.66\00:13:28.71
