Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:21.58\00:00:22.99 I'm Pastor Mark Howard. I'm here with my co-host, my brother 00:00:23.02\00:00:25.66 Jim Howard who is a pastor also. We both pastor in the state of 00:00:25.69\00:00:28.81 Michigan and we are studying the book of Acts. I sure hope 00:00:28.85\00:00:32.91 you have you Bibles with you as we dive in again to the day of 00:00:32.94\00:00:36.97 Pentecost. Now we have been building up to this point and 00:00:37.00\00:00:39.89 this is a pivotal point even though we're right here in the 00:00:39.93\00:00:42.30 beginning of the book of Acts. It's really kind of a launch pad 00:00:42.33\00:00:45.62 the day of Pentecost where Jesus had told his disciples to tarry 00:00:45.65\00:00:49.11 and wait for the promise of the Father and here's where we come 00:00:49.15\00:00:52.58 to the fulfillment of that. Before we start reading in 00:00:52.61\00:00:55.78 scripture we're just going to ask the Lord to guide our 00:00:55.82\00:00:58.95 understanding. Father in heaven, as we're 00:00:58.98\00:01:01.70 reading about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the early 00:01:01.73\00:01:04.33 church we pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us, the Spirit 00:01:04.36\00:01:07.10 of truth to guide us into all truth as we study and we ask it 00:01:07.14\00:01:09.84 in Jesus name, Amen. Acts chapter 2, verse 1. 00:01:09.87\00:01:14.67 The Bible tells us: When the day of Pentecost had fully come they 00:01:14.70\00:01:20.30 were all with one accord on one place. Now I want to keep 00:01:20.33\00:01:23.20 reading on here, but I can't skip past this what the 00:01:23.23\00:01:27.40 scripture is saying and what I want to look at here about the 00:01:27.44\00:01:31.40 day of Pentecost is something that a lot of New Testament 00:01:31.44\00:01:34.80 Christians are unaware of having not studied a lot of Old 00:01:34.83\00:01:38.95 Testament typology. But the day of Pentecost coming and being 00:01:38.98\00:01:43.06 fully come was powerful fulfillment of messianic 00:01:43.10\00:01:47.75 prophecy in scriptural types and you'll see what I mean by 00:01:47.78\00:01:52.56 that when you follow me back to book of Leviticus. We're going 00:01:52.60\00:01:56.01 to the book of Leviticus and we're going to chapter 23. 00:01:56.05\00:01:58.95 Now Pentecost was one of the Jewish feasts that took place 00:01:58.99\00:02:03.04 throughout the year every year. It was an annual feast of the 00:02:03.07\00:02:07.64 Jews and we read about those feasts in Leviticus 23. Now I 00:02:07.67\00:02:12.48 want to start with the feast of Passover in verse 4. Leviticus 00:02:12.52\00:02:17.33 23 and verse 4. The Bible says: These are the feasts of the Lord 00:02:17.37\00:02:22.15 holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their 00:02:22.18\00:02:25.13 appointed times. Now I just want to interject here; 00:02:25.17\00:02:28.40 It's interesting that the gatherings, I use the word 00:02:28.44\00:02:31.38 gatherings, convocations, a convocation was a gathering, 00:02:31.41\00:02:34.29 and the feasts of the Lord were gatherings. The worship services 00:02:34.32\00:02:38.63 of the Lord were intended to be gatherings and I want to 00:02:38.66\00:02:42.42 emphasize that. Even today sometimes people today get a 00:02:42.46\00:02:46.14 very independent idea of worship and they say will I can worship 00:02:46.18\00:02:50.46 God out in nature under the juniper tree or something you 00:02:50.50\00:02:54.04 know. Where you've got a gathering God's calling for here 00:02:54.07\00:02:57.52 and there's a blessing that comes from being gathered 00:02:57.55\00:03:00.96 together. You know, just prior to this 00:03:01.00\00:03:03.12 verse it talks about the Sabbath and sometimes when people first 00:03:03.15\00:03:07.13 learn about the Sabbath and the importance of the Sabbath of the 00:03:07.16\00:03:11.48 fourth commandment they think well I can do that at home and 00:03:11.51\00:03:15.52 I'll just make sure I care for that at home. But in that very 00:03:15.56\00:03:20.15 verse it says that the Sabbath is a day, in verse 3, of holy 00:03:20.18\00:03:23.95 convocation, that's a sacred gathering. So again and again 00:03:23.98\00:03:27.10 we see the importance of gathering together as Christians 00:03:27.14\00:03:30.22 like they were in Acts chapter 2. 00:03:30.25\00:03:32.11 Right. In fact the apostle Paul says in Hebrews chapter 10 that 00:03:32.15\00:03:34.98 as we see the day of Christ approaching let's not gather 00:03:35.02\00:03:37.93 together less but more. Now it's important. I'm glad you brought 00:03:37.97\00:03:41.67 that up about the seventh day Sabbath. We see that the Sabbath 00:03:41.71\00:03:45.59 of the 10 commandment in verse 3 because there's a distinction 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.93 that we're going to go into which is the Sabbaths that come 00:03:48.97\00:03:52.19 in conjunction with the feasts because the feasts also had 00:03:52.23\00:03:55.38 their Sabbaths. Now the seventh day Sabbath always took place on 00:03:55.41\00:03:58.47 the seventh day. But during a feast, the feast was driven more 00:03:58.50\00:04:01.76 by the calendar than by the day of the week. So it would be as 00:04:01.79\00:04:05.98 we read in verse 5 it says: On the 14th day of the first month 00:04:06.01\00:04:10.16 at twilight is the Lord's Passover and on the 15th day of 00:04:10.19\00:04:13.67 the same month is the feast of unleavened bread to the Lord. 00:04:13.70\00:04:17.14 Seven days you must eat unleavened bread so on the 14th 00:04:17.17\00:04:20.53 day and the 15th day, these would fall on different days of 00:04:20.56\00:04:23.98 the week depending on the year. But it goes on to tell us in 00:04:24.01\00:04:28.33 verse 7 on the first day of this particular feast you shall have 00:04:28.37\00:04:32.66 a holy convocation (again a gathering). You shall do no 00:04:32.69\00:04:37.75 customary work on it. Now this is the feast of unleavened bread 00:04:37.79\00:04:41.14 So the first day of that feast is a Sabbath, it's a rest day. 00:04:41.18\00:04:44.15 The word Sabbath in Hebrew is just a word that means rest. 00:04:44.18\00:04:47.52 They would do no work on that day. So there are places in this 00:04:47.56\00:04:50.48 passage that we're going to look at that will say that they do no 00:04:50.52\00:04:53.41 work and it may not use the word Sabbath but that's what it means 00:04:53.44\00:04:56.30 and you can read it as you go. If you read through the whole 00:04:56.34\00:04:59.62 chapter, these were feast Sabbaths and in this particular 00:04:59.65\00:05:02.26 case on the 15th day of the first month is when you're going 00:05:02.29\00:05:04.86 find this feast Sabbath. It could be on whatever day of 00:05:04.90\00:05:07.87 the week. Just like an anniversary. 00:05:07.90\00:05:09.27 Yeah, like an anniversary or birthday or whatever. Now it 00:05:09.30\00:05:13.06 goes on to tell us in verse 8 you shall make an offering or 00:05:13.10\00:05:16.34 offer an offering made by fire to the Lord for seven days. 00:05:16.37\00:05:19.75 This is during the feast of unleavened bread. The seventh 00:05:19.78\00:05:23.09 day shall be a holy convocation. This is the seventh day of the 00:05:23.12\00:05:25.79 feast. This feast was blocked off by Sabbaths, by days of 00:05:25.82\00:05:31.26 rest where God wanted his people to be able to gather and come 00:05:31.30\00:05:34.62 away from their work and focus on the spiritual lessons. 00:05:34.66\00:05:38.12 Then he says in verse 9, And the Lord spoke unto Moses saying 00:05:38.16\00:05:41.55 speak to the children of Israel and say to them, When you come 00:05:41.58\00:05:45.14 into the land which I give you and reap its harvest then you 00:05:45.17\00:05:49.49 shall bring a sheaf of the first fruits to the priest; verse 11, 00:05:49.53\00:05:53.93 He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord to be accepted on your 00:05:53.96\00:05:58.67 behalf on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it 00:05:58.71\00:06:02.39 I'm going to make a sense of this in just a moment. On the 00:06:02.43\00:06:05.99 day after the Sabbath you shall wave it and you shall offer on 00:06:06.02\00:06:09.54 that day when you offer the sheaf you shall offer a male 00:06:09.58\00:06:11.41 lamb, etc., etc. Now I'm jumping ahead to verse 15 where it says, 00:06:11.44\00:06:16.96 in my Bible I have a heading that says the Feast of Weeks. 00:06:16.99\00:06:19.88 It says, And you shall count for yourselves from the day after 00:06:19.92\00:06:23.09 the Sabbath from the day that you brought the sheaf of the 00:06:23.13\00:06:26.83 wave offering, seven Sabbaths shall be completed. Count 50 00:06:26.86\00:06:30.54 days to the day after the seventh Sabbath and then you 00:06:30.57\00:06:34.21 shall offer a new grain offering to the Lord. 00:06:34.25\00:06:36.71 Now this was speaking about Pentecost. 00:06:36.75\00:06:38.12 That's what Pentecost is, pente 50 and you get the 50 days that 00:06:38.15\00:06:42.40 come after. See here's how it worked out. You had Passover 00:06:42.44\00:06:45.67 on the 14th day of the first month. That lamb was slain, the 00:06:45.70\00:06:48.98 Passover lamb at twilight on the 14th day of the first month. 00:06:49.02\00:06:52.38 And then the Bible says that the next day began the Feast of 00:06:52.41\00:06:55.64 Weeks and that was a feast Sabbath; there was no work done 00:06:55.68\00:06:59.71 on that day. Then the day after that feast Sabbath on the 16th 00:06:59.74\00:07:03.23 day was the day where the wave sheaf was offered before the 00:07:03.27\00:07:06.63 Lord. Now the wave sheaf was a first fruits offering. In other 00:07:06.66\00:07:11.69 words it was an early precursor to the harvest 00:07:11.72\00:07:15.22 that was coming. It was an early, 00:07:15.25\00:07:16.98 I want to say, harvest. It wasn't really a harvest, 00:07:17.02\00:07:20.43 it was a pre-harvest and the wave offering was basically 00:07:20.47\00:07:24.72 thanking the Lord in advance for the harvest that was going to 00:07:24.76\00:07:28.49 come. Then when you counted the 50 days on the 50th day then you 00:07:28.53\00:07:32.22 had a harvest and you would take that harvest and you would 00:07:32.26\00:07:35.98 wave it before the Lord. Now this is all pointing forward to 00:07:36.02\00:07:39.64 different things in the ministry of Christ. First of all, let's 00:07:39.67\00:07:44.84 go to 1 Corinthians 5. It's absolutely fascinating when you 00:07:44.88\00:07:48.86 realize that the children of Israel carried on this custom 00:07:48.89\00:07:52.85 for well over 1000 years every year; 14th day they had the 00:07:52.89\00:07:56.41 Passover lamb, 15th day, the feast Sabbath, the feast of 00:07:56.44\00:07:59.89 weeks began, 16th day the wave sheaf, count 50 days, you have 00:07:59.93\00:08:04.17 Pentecost. Over and over and over they went through this 00:08:04.20\00:08:07.95 routine. Now 1 Corinthians chapter 5 in verse 7 notice what 00:08:07.99\00:08:11.70 the apostle Paul says. Therefore purge out the old 00:08:11.74\00:08:15.40 leaven (which is one of the things they had to do during the 00:08:15.43\00:08:18.50 Passover) that you may be a new lump since you truly are 00:08:18.54\00:08:21.54 unleavened for indeed Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us. 00:08:21.57\00:08:26.88 Now it's not a mystery to most Christians that Christ was 00:08:26.91\00:08:29.37 typified in the Passover lamb. But look at the next one in 00:08:29.40\00:08:31.78 1 Corinthians 15; 1 Corinthians 15 and we're going to verse 20. 00:08:31.82\00:08:40.47 And the Bible says: But now Christ is risen from the dead 00:08:40.51\00:08:45.36 and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 00:08:45.39\00:08:51.07 And later on here Paul says in verse 23, speaking of the 00:08:51.11\00:08:55.30 resurrection, each one in his own order, Christ the first 00:08:55.33\00:08:59.23 fruits, afterward those who are Christ's at his coming. 00:08:59.27\00:09:02.97 So Paul points to the resurrection of Christ as the 00:09:03.01\00:09:06.24 first fruits offering. Now follow along here. You come 00:09:06.28\00:09:09.44 down the ages to 31 A.D. On the 14th day of the first month 00:09:09.48\00:09:15.05 at twilight Jesus Christ is crucified and hangs on Calvary's 00:09:15.08\00:09:20.39 cross as has been repeated in type year after year after year 00:09:20.42\00:09:24.75 and right on time he's crucified On the 15th day, the feast 00:09:24.79\00:09:29.05 Sabbath Jesus rests in the grave The Bible says in the gospel of 00:09:29.08\00:09:33.11 John, chapter 19, I believe it's verse 31 that that day was a 00:09:33.15\00:09:36.68 day. Now a high day was when the seventh day Sabbath and a 00:09:36.71\00:09:40.59 feast Sabbath corresponded on the same day. On the 16th day, 00:09:40.63\00:09:44.47 the third day since the crucifixion, Jesus is raised 00:09:44.51\00:09:47.99 from the dead and has become the first fruits just as the type 00:09:48.03\00:09:51.02 has shown repeatedly. Then the Bible tells us that Jesus spends 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.27 40 days with his disciples and then they have 10 days in the 00:09:54.30\00:09:58.19 upper room and when the day of Pentecost had fully come what do 00:09:58.23\00:10:02.08 we find but a harvest. Jesus raises from the dead as the 00:10:02.11\00:10:05.15 first fruits, as the evidence that there's going to be a 00:10:05.18\00:10:07.83 greater harvest on the day of Pentecost where we're going to 00:10:07.86\00:10:11.27 pick up in Acts chapter 2. We see the fulfillment of years of 00:10:11.31\00:10:14.69 type, typology, that God had shown where in a messianic, 00:10:14.72\00:10:21.01 prophetic type we have a perfect fulfillment. 00:10:21.05\00:10:24.85 So they should have expected that on the day of Pentecost 00:10:24.89\00:10:28.17 there would have been a big harvest of souls. 00:10:28.21\00:10:30.27 They should have expected and when the apostles would preach 00:10:30.30\00:10:33.83 and they were able to use these scriptures, those Jews could not 00:10:33.87\00:10:37.36 help but see that that which they had practiced for so many 00:10:37.39\00:10:41.53 years and even I'm sure it had become formal and routine for 00:10:41.56\00:10:45.14 them, really was pointing forward to the crucifixion and 00:10:45.18\00:10:48.72 the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:10:48.76\00:10:51.04 But often they didn't realize it until it after it was over. 00:10:51.08\00:10:54.50 But certainly it did bring in a harvest of souls and we're going 00:10:54.54\00:10:58.44 to get to that where 3000 were added in a day. But we need to 00:10:58.48\00:11:02.15 start right from the beginning of Acts chapter 2 and dive back 00:11:02.18\00:11:05.82 in and see what it says here about the setting of what 00:11:05.85\00:11:09.65 happened on the day of Pentecost 50 days after. So it says in 00:11:09.69\00:11:14.34 verse 1: When the day of Pentecost had fully come 00:11:14.37\00:11:16.76 they were all with one accord in one place. First of all, that's 00:11:16.80\00:11:21.46 very interesting isn't it. They were with one accord in one 00:11:21.50\00:11:24.94 place. It's as if it was saying they were together. 00:11:24.98\00:11:28.99 They were of the same mind set but they were in the same place 00:11:29.03\00:11:33.52 and this is the atmosphere that allowed for what was about to 00:11:33.55\00:11:37.41 happen and it's interesting that as the Holy Spirit is poured out 00:11:37.44\00:11:40.92 throughout the book of Acts as we're about to see here that it 00:11:40.95\00:11:45.23 happens not necessarily on individuals but on gatherings of 00:11:45.26\00:11:49.77 people. Convocations, assemblies It's going to take us setting 00:11:49.81\00:11:54.48 our pride aside and having humility of heart and love for 00:11:54.51\00:11:58.58 one another in order for us to see and experience what they 00:11:58.61\00:12:02.07 experienced on this day. So they were together, together, with 00:12:02.11\00:12:06.34 one accord in one place. Verse 2 says: And suddenly there came a 00:12:06.37\00:12:10.57 sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it 00:12:10.61\00:12:14.68 filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there 00:12:14.71\00:12:17.65 appeared to them divided tongues as of fire and one sat upon each 00:12:17.69\00:12:21.54 of them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began 00:12:21.57\00:12:25.36 to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 00:12:25.39\00:12:29.14 Now this doesn't look like business as usual for the 00:12:29.18\00:12:32.45 apostles. This was a special day and it says that the whole house 00:12:32.49\00:12:35.93 was filled with this rushing mighty wind but to really get 00:12:35.96\00:12:39.28 the fullness of that you have to look at what it says as you keep 00:12:39.32\00:12:42.68 reading in the next couple verses. It says: There were 00:12:42.72\00:12:45.07 dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation 00:12:45.10\00:12:48.51 under heaven and when this sound occurred the multitude came 00:12:48.55\00:12:52.05 together. And it speaks about how they were confused because 00:12:52.08\00:12:54.81 everyone heard them speak in his own language. But you get this 00:12:54.84\00:12:57.54 picture that this is not an isolated incident. It is so 00:12:57.57\00:13:01.26 powerful, this noise is creating such a commotion. 00:13:01.29\00:13:04.82 Something exploded in town, what happened? 00:13:04.85\00:13:07.01 That's right. I mean we're talking about people who were 00:13:07.05\00:13:09.06 coming from every nation under heaven, so they're scattered 00:13:09.10\00:13:11.08 around here, around the area, and we're hearing this 00:13:11.12\00:13:13.75 incredible supernatural sound. God is calling the attention of 00:13:13.78\00:13:17.88 all these people to the apostles in this moment.
