Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 When we left off, Mark, we were talking about how Judas was 00:00:02.80\00:00:07.74 replaced there in the early church. But these uneducated 00:00:07.78\00:00:12.00 apostles who in many ways were not quite as polished and 00:00:12.04\00:00:16.20 perhaps not as eloquent as Judas continued on. You know, Jesus 00:00:16.23\00:00:21.27 handpicked those apostles and so we have to think that he knew 00:00:21.31\00:00:26.32 what he was doing. And as we look at his own experience we 00:00:26.35\00:00:29.14 see something very similar. Maybe you can start us off 00:00:29.18\00:00:31.93 with that. Well yeah absolutely. In the 00:00:31.97\00:00:34.36 gospel of John chapter 7 we're going to look at verse 15. 00:00:34.40\00:00:39.27 We'll find that in the ministry of Jesus, Jesus also was accused 00:00:39.31\00:00:44.86 of being uneducated and kind of marginalized for that reason. 00:00:44.89\00:00:50.41 In John 7:15 after some of Christ's teaching the Bible 00:00:50.45\00:00:55.60 says: And the Jews marveled saying how does this man know 00:00:55.63\00:01:00.71 letters having never studied? In other words, he never went to 00:01:00.75\00:01:04.46 our school. How does this guy know anything. It's interesting 00:01:04.49\00:01:08.46 when you look at Jesus' response Verse 16: Jesus answered them 00:01:08.50\00:01:12.44 and said my doctrine (or my teaching) is not mine but his 00:01:12.47\00:01:18.51 who sent me and if anyone wills to do his will he shall know 00:01:18.54\00:01:23.09 concerning the doctrine whether it is from God or whether I 00:01:23.13\00:01:27.05 speak on my own authority. So what Jesus does here is he says 00:01:27.09\00:01:30.99 in essence it doesn't matter whether I went to your schools 00:01:31.03\00:01:34.92 of learning or not. My doctrine isn't from me, it's from my 00:01:34.95\00:01:40.33 Father and anyone who wills to know him and do his will, will 00:01:40.37\00:01:44.72 have an understanding that is unlike the understanding of this 00:01:44.76\00:01:49.08 world. It's almost as if he's saying 00:01:49.12\00:01:52.30 you know there's a tendency to make people feel like they can't 00:01:52.34\00:01:58.54 be a part of the mission of Christ but he's saying anyone 00:01:58.57\00:02:02.54 who's willing, anyone who's willing to follow me to do my 00:02:02.58\00:02:06.48 will, they will know because my Father will reveal it to them. 00:02:06.51\00:02:10.30 That's powerful. You know that makes me think of the apostle 00:02:10.33\00:02:13.36 Paul. Because the apostle Paul was very different from these 00:02:13.40\00:02:16.82 fishermen that we look at here in Acts chapter 1. I'd like to 00:02:16.85\00:02:20.44 look at his own description of his background in Philippians 00:02:20.47\00:02:25.80 chapter 3. If you look at Philippians 3 beginning in verse 00:02:25.83\00:02:31.66 3, he says: For we are the circumcision who worship God 00:02:31.70\00:02:37.46 in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in 00:02:37.49\00:02:41.74 the flesh though I also might have confidence in the flesh. 00:02:41.78\00:02:45.71 So Paul says I could have confidence in my background, in 00:02:45.74\00:02:49.63 my credentials. He goes on to list them out: If anyone else 00:02:49.66\00:02:53.48 thinks he may have confidence in the flesh I more so. Circumcised 00:02:53.51\00:02:57.67 the eighth day, of the stock of Israel of the tribe of Benjamin, 00:02:57.70\00:03:01.82 a Hebrew of the Hebrews, concerning the law a Pharisee, 00:03:01.86\00:03:05.88 (that was of the highest order or the highest education) 00:03:05.91\00:03:09.69 concerning zeal persecuting the church, concerning the 00:03:09.73\00:03:14.15 righteousness which is in the law blameless. Now verse 7: 00:03:14.19\00:03:18.54 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for 00:03:18.58\00:03:23.95 Christ, yet indeed I also count all things loss for the 00:03:23.99\00:03:28.53 excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I 00:03:28.56\00:03:31.98 have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish 00:03:32.01\00:03:35.70 that I may gain Christ and be found in him. And then he speaks 00:03:35.74\00:03:39.39 of not having his own righteousness but that which 00:03:39.43\00:03:41.66 comes from Christ. So here he describes his own wonderful 00:03:41.70\00:03:46.05 credentials which truthfully were very helpful to him in 00:03:46.09\00:03:49.67 his ministry. I mean, if we were to really look at it, we 00:03:49.70\00:03:53.25 wouldn't see such clear, distinct explanations, 00:03:53.28\00:03:58.40 expositions, of the gospel as we see in the letters of Paul if he 00:03:58.43\00:04:01.49 didn't have that type of education and background. 00:04:01.53\00:04:04.26 But what he's saying is that when it comes right down to it 00:04:04.30\00:04:08.53 that is not what qualified him. What made his ministry powerful 00:04:08.56\00:04:12.79 and effective and what he would give the world for and count 00:04:12.82\00:04:17.83 everything else loss to have is the excellence of the knowledge 00:04:17.87\00:04:22.84 of Christ Jesus his Lord. Simply having that close abiding 00:04:22.87\00:04:26.73 relationship with Christ where he could receive fresh 00:04:26.77\00:04:29.22 revelations from the Father was qualification enough for him. 00:04:29.26\00:04:33.10 The thing that I fear, Jim, is that some people have a concern 00:04:33.13\00:04:36.45 today that they are not going to be able to be witnesses for 00:04:36.49\00:04:39.60 Christ because they don't have all of these credentials. 00:04:39.63\00:04:43.78 Now Paul didn't negate his credentials but he saw where 00:04:43.81\00:04:47.89 his credentials had to him been a source of pride and his pride 00:04:47.92\00:04:54.03 then became a reason for him to distrust the simple truth. 00:04:54.06\00:04:58.40 What it makes me think of is something that really alarms me 00:04:58.44\00:05:03.07 today in Christianity in some ways we're returning to the dark 00:05:03.10\00:05:07.70 ages in our relation to scripture and this is what I 00:05:07.73\00:05:10.55 mean. In the dark ages, the common man wasn't allowed to 00:05:10.59\00:05:14.19 have his own copy or her own copy of the Bible because the 00:05:14.23\00:05:18.19 medieval church was concerned that if you had your own copy of 00:05:18.22\00:05:21.63 scripture and you didn't have the priest to guide you in your 00:05:21.67\00:05:25.46 understanding you couldn't get it right and that was not the 00:05:25.49\00:05:29.45 position of the Protestant reformers who like John Wycliffe 00:05:29.49\00:05:32.93 had said, it wasn't Wycliffe, it was William Tyndale who said 00:05:32.97\00:05:36.62 to those leaders, I'm going to make it so that a boy who drives 00:05:36.66\00:05:40.28 the plow knows more of the scriptures than you do. 00:05:40.31\00:05:42.42 And that's exactly what he did by putting the Bible in the 00:05:42.45\00:05:45.41 hands of the common people and you saw that explosion of the 00:05:45.44\00:05:49.37 reformation. But what's happened in our day is that many 00:05:49.41\00:05:52.73 Christians are falling into that same mode, not because they 00:05:52.76\00:05:56.02 don't have the Bible; they have many copies of the Bible. But 00:05:56.05\00:05:59.31 when push comes to shove they back off and they say well I 00:05:59.34\00:06:02.68 don't really know. I'm not sure about this. I have to go ask 00:06:02.71\00:06:05.84 somebody who's got a degree. I got to ask somebody who is 00:06:05.87\00:06:08.93 educated in the languages of the Bible. There's this mind set 00:06:08.96\00:06:13.88 that I need this certain human qualification so that I will be 00:06:13.92\00:06:18.19 able to understand. It goes back to what Jesus had said there in 00:06:18.22\00:06:22.46 John 7. If any man wills to do his will he'll know of the 00:06:22.49\00:06:27.10 doctrine. We need to understand that the understanding of 00:06:27.14\00:06:31.67 scripture comes from the Lord. I think of the same apostle Paul 00:06:31.71\00:06:36.09 in 1 Corinthians chapter 1 and in verse 26 he says: For you see 00:06:36.13\00:06:39.91 your calling brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh 00:06:39.94\00:06:44.30 not many mighty, not many noble, are called but God has chosen 00:06:44.34\00:06:48.18 the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise and 00:06:48.22\00:06:51.43 God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the 00:06:51.47\00:06:54.28 things which are mighty and the base things of the world and the 00:06:54.32\00:06:57.01 things which are despised God has chosen and the things which 00:06:57.05\00:07:00.77 are not to bring to nothing the things that are that no flesh 00:07:00.80\00:07:04.48 should glory in his presence. 00:07:04.52\00:07:06.36 You know I hear him saying not many wise according to this 00:07:06.39\00:07:11.34 world and it makes me think. You know sometimes when we start 00:07:11.38\00:07:15.88 to know something and feel that we know something we can get too 00:07:15.91\00:07:19.84 smart for our own good. I know in my own marriage I had that 00:07:19.87\00:07:24.16 happen every now and then where it's hard when you think that 00:07:24.19\00:07:28.44 you're right and you start getting confident about 00:07:28.47\00:07:31.46 something to yield that. And the more we feel that we need some 00:07:31.50\00:07:37.09 special qualification the more it can put us into a box 00:07:37.13\00:07:41.64 sometimes. I think of Jesus who said, You know you can't take 00:07:41.68\00:07:45.97 new wine and put it into old wine skins and we have to be 00:07:46.00\00:07:49.85 careful that we don't have a certain mindset that prevents 00:07:49.89\00:07:53.26 us from learning. I love how the apostle Paul says it. He says 00:07:53.29\00:07:56.70 I think it's 1 Corinthians 8 verses 1 and 2 where he talks 00:07:56.73\00:08:00.07 about if anything think that he knows anything he knows nothing 00:08:00.10\00:08:04.68 yet as he ought to know it. And whether we're educated or 00:08:04.72\00:08:08.18 uneducated or whoever we are we need that attitude. That's 00:08:08.21\00:08:11.25 the only attitude that will make us open to the Spirit of God. 00:08:11.29\00:08:13.67 That's right. It's interesting you brought this situation up 00:08:13.71\00:08:16.18 with your wife and whether it's husbands and wives or whatever 00:08:16.22\00:08:19.08 situation we find ourselves in where we want to maintain our 00:08:19.11\00:08:22.71 rightness, it's interesting how in many situations like that 00:08:22.74\00:08:27.42 we don't base our rightness on the logic of our argument or the 00:08:27.46\00:08:32.10 reasonableness of what our position is but on who I am or 00:08:32.13\00:08:40.45 what my qualifications are. You know this is it. Hey, I've got 00:08:40.48\00:08:44.49 a PhD or hey I've got a this or that or hey I've been here or 00:08:44.52\00:08:50.16 there and we tend to fall back too often on the flesh and we 00:08:50.20\00:08:55.07 glory in the flesh, our own credentials, instead of looking 00:08:55.10\00:08:59.94 to bring glory to God and glorify him and stand on his 00:08:59.97\00:09:06.12 truth. You know, when I was looking 00:09:06.15\00:09:07.86 here in the book of Acts in this first chapter you see Judas and 00:09:07.89\00:09:13.07 he's replaced. That's right. Let another take 00:09:13.10\00:09:16.28 his office. It just helps to remind us that 00:09:16.31\00:09:19.42 none of us in the work of God is irreplaceable. But as we're 00:09:19.46\00:09:25.76 talking about qualifications and the tendency that we see today 00:09:25.79\00:09:30.77 I think that really the heart of this for especially our viewers 00:09:30.81\00:09:36.28 is that sometimes when we don't have a wealth of experience or 00:09:36.32\00:09:41.75 knowledge we shrink from the task of being witnesses for 00:09:41.79\00:09:46.55 Christ and what we see here in the book of Acts is that these 00:09:46.58\00:09:51.59 were normal people who from time with Jesus they learned what it 00:09:51.62\00:09:56.59 took to be witnesses and it doesn't require a PhD for our 00:09:56.63\00:10:01.50 viewers to witness for Christ. They don't need to even have 00:10:01.54\00:10:06.38 a mastery of the original languages of scripture to be 00:10:06.41\00:10:10.29 able to share the message that has gripped their soul and won 00:10:10.33\00:10:15.35 them to the Lord Jesus. 00:10:15.39\00:10:16.76 By definition a witness is not somebody who has such and such 00:10:16.79\00:10:23.88 credentials. A witness is somebody who has 00:10:23.92\00:10:27.50 experienced something, who has seen and heard. If you look 00:10:27.53\00:10:30.84 right where we left off in verse 20 of Acts chapter 1 in verse 21 00:10:30.88\00:10:36.02 they're talking about replacing Judas and it says: Therefore 00:10:36.05\00:10:40.93 of these men who have accompanied us all the 00:10:40.96\00:10:43.49 time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us beginning from 00:10:43.52\00:10:47.26 the baptism of John to that day when he was taken up from us 00:10:47.30\00:10:51.01 one of these must become a witness with us of his 00:10:51.04\00:10:54.89 resurrection. It's interesting. There are certain criteria that 00:10:54.92\00:10:58.94 they needed and that criteria in this setting was it had to be 00:10:58.97\00:11:03.42 somebody who had first hand knowledge and experience of the 00:11:03.46\00:11:07.84 ministry and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And really when you 00:11:07.88\00:11:13.02 go through the New Testament you find that is in a little bit 00:11:13.05\00:11:17.10 different way but very similarly the qualifications for being a 00:11:17.14\00:11:21.46 witness for Christ no matter who you are. And you mentioned 00:11:21.50\00:11:26.34 that really being a witness is not about a PhD but it's 00:11:26.37\00:11:31.14 something else. I'd like to look at a couple of scriptures here. 00:11:31.18\00:11:34.06 Let's look at 1 John and see what John had to have in order 00:11:34.10\00:11:38.14 to be a witness. Yeah, I was just looking at that 00:11:38.18\00:11:42.48 You're already there; you're ahead of me. Why don't you go 00:11:42.52\00:11:44.67 ahead and read that. That's one of the witness texts. 00:11:44.71\00:11:47.47 You know John says... I think it's verse 3 of chapter 00:11:47.50\00:11:50.19 1. Well starting right there in the first verse of 1 John 1 he 00:11:50.23\00:11:53.61 says: That which is from the beginning which we have heard 00:11:53.65\00:11:57.15 which we have seen with our eyes which we have looked upon and 00:11:57.18\00:12:00.65 our hands have handled concerning the Word of life 00:12:00.68\00:12:03.45 The life was manifested and we have seen and bear witness and 00:12:03.49\00:12:06.92 declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and 00:12:06.95\00:12:10.14 was manifested to us, that which we have seen and heard we 00:12:10.18\00:12:13.30 declare to you. Again and again, we've seen, we've heard, we've 00:12:13.34\00:12:16.55 touched, we've handled. So this was part of the criteria 00:12:16.59\00:12:18.36 for those apostles. They had to see and hear. When you look in 00:12:18.40\00:12:23.09 Acts 22 where it describes the apostle Paul and his calling 00:12:23.13\00:12:27.75 again Paul was called to bear witness to what he had seen and 00:12:27.78\00:12:32.45 heard. Later, and we'll soon get to this, in Acts chapter 4 when 00:12:32.48\00:12:37.11 Peter and John were standing before the council they again 00:12:37.14\00:12:41.44 had to say we cannot but speak what we have seen and heard. 00:12:41.48\00:12:46.07 That's right. This is not a requirement that we don't have 00:12:46.11\00:12:50.66 access to. That's right. Even the demoniac 00:12:50.70\00:12:52.29 of the Gadarenes Jesus said go and tell what great things God 00:12:52.32\00:12:56.05 has done for you. That's right. And so personal 00:12:56.08\00:12:58.62 experience. We don't have to share any more than what we 00:12:58.65\00:13:02.09 ourselves know. But boy we sure ought to share what we do know, 00:13:02.12\00:13:06.87 what we have experienced. We cannot but speak what we have 00:13:06.90\00:13:10.36 seen and heard and that's where the heart of this concept of 00:13:10.39\00:13:13.82 being a witness, the qualification for being a 00:13:13.85\00:13:16.04 witness is personal experience with Christ. I may not have seen 00:13:16.08\00:13:20.16 him walking on the streets of Jerusalem, I may not have heard 00:13:20.19\00:13:24.71 the Father's voice speaking from the clouds, but I have by faith 00:13:24.75\00:13:29.19 seen the Lord Jesus through the scripture. I've heard the voice 00:13:29.22\00:13:33.67 of the Spirit of God speak to my heart and make it plain to my 00:13:33.71\00:13:37.75 heart and that is a witness and if I'm going to bear witness 00:13:37.79\00:13:41.82 that means that I need to be sharing that same scripture with 00:13:41.86\00:13:45.42 others and telling them just exactly what the Lord revealed 00:13:45.46\00:13:48.99 to me. That's right. We've had the 00:13:49.02\00:13:50.92 experience of Jesus deliverance in our lives. I think of Acts 00:13:50.96\00:13:55.82 chapter 4 and verse 13 where the leaders did encounter Peter 00:13:55.86\00:14:00.69 and John as transformed men and the Bible says that they 00:14:00.73\00:14:03.82 perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men and 00:14:03.85\00:14:06.87 they marveled and they realized that they had been with Jesus. 00:14:06.90\00:14:10.80 Wow! That's incredible. They saw the boldness of Peter and John. 00:14:10.83\00:14:14.89 They thought to themselves, Wow, the last time we saw someone 00:14:14.92\00:14:18.57 with this kind of authority, the last time we saw someone with 00:14:18.60\00:14:21.87 this kind of power in their preaching it was the Lord Jesus. 00:14:21.90\00:14:25.46 And they said these men must have been with the Lord Jesus. 00:14:25.49\00:14:28.58 How is it with you friend.
