Well welcome back. We are in the book of Acts. We are studying 00:00:02.00\00:00:05.41 in Acts chapter 1 and we are focusing on the promise of the 00:00:05.45\00:00:08.71 Father or the work of the Holy Spirit in the early church. And 00:00:08.75\00:00:12.57 we've talked about how Jesus had told his disciples to wait for 00:00:12.60\00:00:16.53 the Holy Spirit and also how Jesus had promised the gift of 00:00:16.57\00:00:21.08 the Holy Spirit, how it was expedient that he go away and 00:00:21.12\00:00:25.19 otherwise he couldn't send the Helper. A lot of people have 00:00:25.23\00:00:28.63 stumbled over that and we've touched on the idea that the 00:00:28.67\00:00:32.00 expediency came from the fact that it was Jesus ministry that 00:00:32.04\00:00:34.99 provided some raw material for the Holy Spirit to work in a 00:00:35.03\00:00:37.95 special way in New Testament times. However... 00:00:37.99\00:00:41.15 Yeah, he's always been working, right, because we took a little 00:00:41.18\00:00:44.78 detour to John chapter 3 and we spent a little time looking 00:00:44.81\00:00:49.04 at the work of Christ through the Holy Spirit in conversion. 00:00:49.07\00:00:53.14 And we talked about conversion being something that not only 00:00:53.18\00:00:57.29 happens in New Testament times but the new birth process is 00:00:57.32\00:01:00.26 something that happened in Old Testament times because 00:01:00.30\00:01:03.16 Nicodemus was told by Jesus he should have understood from the 00:01:03.20\00:01:06.25 Old Testament scriptures. 00:01:06.29\00:01:07.66 That's right. Now that was a powerful point. I mean honestly 00:01:07.69\00:01:11.13 it's for so many Christians, and I don't say this disparagingly, 00:01:11.16\00:01:15.08 but for so many Christians the new birth is a New Testament 00:01:15.11\00:01:18.46 experience. It's not something that existed in the Old 00:01:18.49\00:01:22.79 Testament times. So for Jesus to be speaking to Nicodemus 00:01:22.83\00:01:26.58 and act like he should understand the new birth. I mean 00:01:26.62\00:01:29.67 sometimes as a reader we're looking at and saying what do 00:01:29.71\00:01:32.39 you mean you should understand. Isn't this a new concept. But 00:01:32.42\00:01:35.35 evidently not because he tells him you're a teacher in Israel 00:01:35.38\00:01:39.03 and you should know these things and by inference you should be 00:01:39.07\00:01:42.68 teaching these things. 00:01:42.71\00:01:44.08 That's right. In the Old Testament we talked about how 00:01:44.11\00:01:47.05 even David spoke about not taking the Holy Spirit away 00:01:47.09\00:01:50.29 from him because evidently they knew, the Godly men and women 00:01:50.33\00:01:54.57 of Old Testament times, that it was the Holy Spirit that gave 00:01:54.61\00:01:58.97 them inspiration, that gave them the motivation, that gave them 00:01:59.01\00:02:03.33 the inclination to want to do right and without the Holy 00:02:03.37\00:02:07.08 Spirit there's no way we could have had godly examples in Old 00:02:07.11\00:02:10.74 Testament times. You know, Jim, it makes me think 00:02:10.78\00:02:13.01 of Romans 7:14 where the apostle Paul says: For we know that the 00:02:13.04\00:02:17.96 law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 00:02:18.00\00:02:22.24 And he goes on to talk about even though he knows to do the 00:02:22.27\00:02:25.43 right he ends up doing the wrong thing and when he knows he 00:02:25.47\00:02:28.56 doesn't want to the wrong thing he finds himself doing it anyway 00:02:28.60\00:02:31.64 and he talks about this internal struggle with his fallen nature. 00:02:31.67\00:02:34.68 It's interesting there that he brings out the law of God as 00:02:34.72\00:02:38.00 being spiritual. And what I hear you saying is the Holy Spirit's 00:02:38.03\00:02:43.63 purpose is to make us spiritual. If we're not spiritual, there's 00:02:43.66\00:02:49.22 no way we're going to be able to live in harmony with God's 00:02:49.26\00:02:53.57 spiritual laws and ways. So in Nicodemus, and you mentioned 00:02:53.61\00:02:58.70 also in the experience of David this conversion process. 00:02:58.73\00:03:03.22 Yes, it was critical. It was critical to Old Testament times 00:03:03.26\00:03:06.96 and New Testament times. We're taking a little bit of time in 00:03:06.99\00:03:10.63 this session to talk about the work of the Holy Spirit because 00:03:10.67\00:03:14.99 in the book of Acts that Holy Spirit is everywhere and you can 00:03:15.02\00:03:19.30 see throughout the book of Acts that the Holy Spirit is 00:03:19.34\00:03:22.73 prominent in the lives of the believers and there are 00:03:22.76\00:03:26.09 different aspects to the work of the Holy Spirit that we're 00:03:26.12\00:03:29.36 focusing on today. We're focusing on conversion and we're 00:03:29.39\00:03:33.78 focusing on the process of conviction and how the Holy 00:03:33.82\00:03:38.14 Spirit leads us into truth and we're going to talk a little 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.91 bit about the power of the Holy Spirit that was especially 00:03:40.95\00:03:43.65 granted there in the book of Acts. 00:03:43.68\00:03:45.05 That's right and we'll be touching on that throughout our 00:03:45.08\00:03:47.35 study of the book of Acts because of the prominence of the 00:03:47.39\00:03:49.82 work of the Holy Spirit there. But again, we don't want to 00:03:49.86\00:03:53.24 forget that we started this episode by looking at Jesus' own 00:03:53.28\00:03:57.39 command to his disciples to wait until they received the promise 00:03:57.42\00:04:00.60 of the Father. In other words, it was very important to Jesus 00:04:00.63\00:04:03.78 that they understand the importance of the power of the 00:04:03.81\00:04:07.27 Holy Spirit not only in their lives but in their ministry 00:04:07.31\00:04:11.30 because it's not only in changing us as individuals but 00:04:11.34\00:04:15.29 also in bringing conviction. 00:04:15.33\00:04:16.73 That's right. Let's talk about conviction a little bit. If we 00:04:16.76\00:04:22.05 could look back at John chapter 16, we've been there briefly. 00:04:22.09\00:04:26.53 There's a special role of the Holy Spirit that we see. John 00:04:26.57\00:04:32.78 chapter 16 and beginning at verse 8. This is right in the 00:04:32.82\00:04:38.97 process of talking about Jesus going away and sending the Holy 00:04:39.00\00:04:42.72 Spirit and in discussing the work of the Holy Spirit he comes 00:04:42.76\00:04:46.72 right to the point in verse 8. Jesus says: And when he has come 00:04:46.75\00:04:51.67 he will convict the world of sin and of righteousness and of 00:04:51.70\00:04:56.60 judgment. Now the Holy Spirit is often referred to as the 00:04:56.64\00:05:01.47 comforter. And we're so thankful for the comforting presence of 00:05:01.50\00:05:05.23 the Holy Spirit, but the first thing that we find that the Holy 00:05:05.27\00:05:08.97 Spirit does when he comes to us doesn't sound all that 00:05:09.00\00:05:12.27 comforting. It says he will convict us of sin. He will show 00:05:12.30\00:05:17.16 us our guilt. He will bring us to a sense of our lost condition 00:05:17.20\00:05:21.92 He will show us something that does not at all feel comfortable 00:05:21.95\00:05:26.64 And if you look at the progression of things here it 00:05:26.68\00:05:29.86 says he'll convict the world of sin, that's what's wrong, and 00:05:29.89\00:05:34.83 and then he'll convict of righteousness, that's what's 00:05:34.87\00:05:38.31 right, that's what we should be doing. 00:05:38.34\00:05:39.71 Yeah, and it's important to note there too when it comes to right 00:05:39.74\00:05:42.60 and wrong, you know, everybody has their own idea. And I've 00:05:42.63\00:05:46.16 told people this. You know you don't have to be a Christian to 00:05:46.20\00:05:49.70 have a sense or an idea of right and wrong. Everybody his some 00:05:49.74\00:05:53.54 code of morality. But the Holy Spirit is then one who tells us 00:05:53.57\00:05:57.05 what's right and wrong according to God's idea, not according to 00:05:57.09\00:06:00.54 our idea. And he does it through what we would call our 00:06:00.57\00:06:03.72 conscience. Also, I think even more 00:06:03.76\00:06:06.25 primarily, we go to Ephesians 6 and we learn that the word of 00:06:06.29\00:06:10.78 God is the sword of the Spirit. So the Spirit uses the word 00:06:10.81\00:06:15.16 and the truth of the word to show us what's right and what's 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.83 wrong. And when he brings that conviction that leads us to a 00:06:18.87\00:06:22.72 decision. And I think that's why he follows by saying he'll 00:06:22.75\00:06:26.45 convict the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. 00:06:26.49\00:06:30.66 In other words, our decision whether we go the way of sin or 00:06:30.69\00:06:34.32 the way of righteousness, whether we respond to the Holy 00:06:34.35\00:06:37.66 Spirit's drawing or whether we don't is going to have 00:06:37.69\00:06:40.93 consequences. There's a judgment that will ultimately determine 00:06:40.97\00:06:45.44 and will bring upon us a result based upon that decision. If you 00:06:45.47\00:06:49.80 look further down the passage in verse 13 he gives a wonderful 00:06:49.84\00:06:54.26 promise. He says: However, when he the Spirit of truth has come 00:06:54.29\00:06:59.47 he will guide you into all truth So here we have a picture and 00:06:59.50\00:07:04.33 I don't think that what he's promising here is simply that we 00:07:04.37\00:07:08.47 would know and understand right doctrine. I believe that's true. 00:07:08.50\00:07:12.57 But I think that if we are reading in the context we can 00:07:12.60\00:07:16.12 see that being guided into the truth is being guided into 00:07:16.15\00:07:19.61 making right choices about the truth. In other words, he's 00:07:19.65\00:07:23.03 showing us sin, he's showing us righteousness but if he's going 00:07:23.07\00:07:25.97 to guide us into the truth it's through this process of learning 00:07:26.01\00:07:29.91 how to live the truth. But we can be thankful that unlike some 00:07:29.95\00:07:33.68 who say you know we can't really know what's truth, like Pilate 00:07:33.71\00:07:37.41 who said what is truth, Jesus promises here that if we are 00:07:37.45\00:07:42.09 willing that the Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth. 00:07:42.12\00:07:46.16 Well what's powerful, Jim, is also... I mean we're reading in 00:07:46.19\00:07:50.02 John 16. In John 14 when Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit he 00:07:50.05\00:07:53.09 calls him the Spirit of truth. In John 15 when he talks about 00:07:53.12\00:07:55.79 the Holy Spirit, he calls him the Spirit of truth. This isn't 00:07:55.83\00:07:59.71 an incidental title that he gives. Again in chapter 16 the 00:07:59.75\00:08:03.56 Spirit of truth and again in an age where people are just asking 00:08:03.60\00:08:07.92 like Pilate did what is truth God says here's truth and the 00:08:07.95\00:08:11.32 Holy Spirit bears witness to truth. And you talked about the 00:08:11.35\00:08:16.07 sword of the Spirit of God, the word of truth. Jesus himself 00:08:16.10\00:08:19.92 when he was praying in John 17 said sanctify them Father by 00:08:19.96\00:08:23.83 thy truth, thy word is truth. So you see this element of truth 00:08:23.87\00:08:29.49 and we see the truth being used to bring that conviction. The 00:08:29.52\00:08:34.54 Holy Spirit reaching into our hearts basically and again the 00:08:34.57\00:08:39.52 description of a sword. You know when you think of a sword coming 00:08:39.55\00:08:43.03 on you you're not thinking comfort. But it's interesting 00:08:43.07\00:08:47.77 that I believe what the Lord is saying that the only kind of 00:08:47.81\00:08:51.68 real true comfort that can be experienced is when we yield 00:08:51.71\00:08:55.55 ourselves to the truth. 00:08:55.58\00:08:57.48 That's right. It brings peace to the heart when we find not only 00:08:57.51\00:09:03.05 what our carnal desires would want us to do but when we 00:09:03.08\00:09:08.28 actually come to a point of finding a different, a better, 00:09:08.31\00:09:12.13 way of getting rid of that conviction of the Holy Spirit 00:09:12.17\00:09:15.92 and that is by surrendering. Surrendering to the will of God. 00:09:15.95\00:09:19.73 And finding the truth in our own life. This is what brings peace 00:09:19.77\00:09:23.51 and comfort to the soul. 00:09:23.55\00:09:26.50 Right. And every one of us experiences that approach of the 00:09:26.53\00:09:29.81 Holy Spirit and we're going to see throughout the book of Acts 00:09:29.85\00:09:33.10 that there can be very different responses to the 00:09:33.13\00:09:37.25 conviction of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes I think we would 00:09:37.28\00:09:40.55 assume that well if it's the Holy Spirit and it's true then 00:09:40.58\00:09:43.59 sooner or later you just got to give in to it but that's not 00:09:43.63\00:09:46.49 the reality that we find in scripture. We will find that as 00:09:46.53\00:09:49.27 the Holy Spirit continues to bring conviction different 00:09:49.31\00:09:51.98 people respond to conviction in different ways. Now the last 00:09:52.01\00:09:55.69 thing you had mentioned is the power of the Holy Spirit. We 00:09:55.72\00:09:59.41 don't want to overlook that. We go back to the book of Acts 00:09:59.44\00:10:03.61 chapter 1 and we'll pick up again in verse 6 and it says 00:10:03.65\00:10:07.62 here: Therefore when they had come together Jesus and his 00:10:07.65\00:10:10.86 disciples, they asked him saying Lord will you at this time 00:10:10.90\00:10:13.76 restore the kingdom to Israel and he said to them, it is not 00:10:13.79\00:10:16.76 for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in his 00:10:16.80\00:10:19.73 own authority but you shall receive power when the Holy 00:10:19.76\00:10:24.97 Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto me. 00:10:25.01\00:10:29.54 And so he gives them the area, the territory. They're going to 00:10:29.57\00:10:34.28 start close to home and just Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria 00:10:34.31\00:10:37.67 and concentric... you picture concentric circles just growing 00:10:37.70\00:10:41.17 out, out, out, out. You're going to be witnesses and this message 00:10:41.21\00:10:44.38 is going to have a ripple effect through the earth. But it comes 00:10:44.41\00:10:47.55 when the Holy Spirit comes and he brings power. 00:10:47.58\00:10:51.25 I think that power is needed in the book of Acts just like it's 00:10:51.29\00:10:55.58 needed for us because it wasn't easy for them to be witnesses. 00:10:55.62\00:11:00.79 I believe that the Greek word for witness is martus or as it's 00:11:00.82\00:11:05.58 translated in Acts 22, martyr. So there's this very clear sense 00:11:05.62\00:11:11.14 that to be a witness is to be sacrificial, to go against all 00:11:11.18\00:11:16.67 odds to be facing dire consequences and so they needed 00:11:16.70\00:11:20.62 power, they needed courage and the Holy Spirit was going to 00:11:20.66\00:11:23.35 give them that. That's right. And you see power 00:11:23.39\00:11:25.83 not only you see the courage, the power and the courage. You 00:11:25.87\00:11:28.92 see the power in miracles were going to be worked through the 00:11:28.95\00:11:32.75 apostles and power in conversion as people received the message 00:11:32.79\00:11:36.73 and you've got people who are in the heart of heathenism and 00:11:36.77\00:11:40.16 you watch the conversion, the change, the transformation of 00:11:40.19\00:11:44.48 their lives. There comes a point in the book of Acts where the 00:11:44.52\00:11:48.49 religious leaders say you have basically filled Jerusalem with 00:11:48.52\00:11:52.17 your doctrine. Well how does that happen when we start with 00:11:52.20\00:11:55.55 12 disciples and then as we go on in Acts chapter 1 we'll find 00:11:55.59\00:11:59.48 120 and they spread the gospel to the known world. How does 00:11:59.52\00:12:03.38 that happen? It happened through the power of the Holy 00:12:03.42\00:12:06.09 Spirit. That's right and as I think 00:12:06.13\00:12:07.67 about that, you know what, I wonder if sometimes we become 00:12:07.70\00:12:11.85 tempted to think that that power is not available to us 00:12:11.88\00:12:15.74 today. You know when we talk about the acts of the Holy 00:12:15.78\00:12:20.04 Spirit in the book of Acts and we look at all the wondrous 00:12:20.08\00:12:24.13 things that happened, we're tempted to think that what we 00:12:24.16\00:12:28.14 need is some special infusion of power that is not really ours 00:12:28.18\00:12:33.31 but there's never anything in scripture that says that that 00:12:33.34\00:12:38.02 power does not remain with us. We're looking at in the book of 00:12:38.06\00:12:42.70 Acts are acts... In other words, the Holy Spirit 00:12:42.73\00:12:44.92 hasn't stopped working for God's people today. 00:12:44.95\00:12:47.07 That's right. God's people have stopped working through the 00:12:47.10\00:12:50.39 power of the Holy Spirit. And so here we are in the book of Acts 00:12:50.43\00:12:53.81 which emphasizes not just the acts of the Holy Spirit but it's 00:12:53.85\00:12:57.20 emphasizing the fact that here were godly people who were 00:12:57.23\00:13:01.56 willing to do something for God. They were not just the musings 00:13:01.60\00:13:05.98 of the apostles or the thoughts of the apostles. This is not 00:13:06.02\00:13:10.66 merely intentions but the acts of the apostles. And friends we 00:13:10.70\00:13:14.67 invite you to continue studying with us in the Book of Acts. 00:13:14.71\00:13:18.65
