Welcome to Books of the Book. I'm Pastor Mark Howard. I'm here 00:00:22.17\00:00:25.04 with my brother, Jim. He's my co-host and we are studying the 00:00:25.07\00:00:29.33 book of Acts. In our last study we looked at how in the book 00:00:29.36\00:00:34.10 of Acts and even as the author Luke prefaced the history that 00:00:34.13\00:00:38.39 we're reading here in the end of his gospel we found that the 00:00:38.43\00:00:43.03 Bible, the scripture, was the foundation. Jesus himself set 00:00:43.06\00:00:46.92 his apostles looking at the scripture as the foundation for 00:00:46.96\00:00:51.43 their faith. The scripture is really the foundation of all the 00:00:51.46\00:00:55.90 revival and the power we find. 00:00:55.93\00:00:57.70 Yeah. He makes a real clear point of evidence. The fact that 00:00:57.74\00:01:02.28 in the book of Acts we find infallible proof as we find 00:01:02.32\00:01:06.38 clear evidence for our faith and the scripture when it is that 00:01:06.41\00:01:10.50 to us clear evidence it gives us a compelling desire to share the 00:01:10.53\00:01:14.59 mission, which was the other area that we really focused on 00:01:14.62\00:01:17.86 last time was the mission that was given to the apostles was 00:01:17.89\00:01:21.77 what drove them throughout the book of Acts, that deep love for 00:01:21.81\00:01:25.03 souls and desire to see others find the same salvation that 00:01:25.07\00:01:28.26 they had is what compelled them to be bold for Christ. 00:01:28.29\00:01:31.14 That's right. Now I hope you have your Bibles with you 00:01:31.18\00:01:33.96 because we're going to jump into the book of Acts and we're going 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.72 to begin reading in verse 1. Before we do I'd like to ask the 00:01:36.76\00:01:40.00 Lord to guide our study and give us understanding in his word and 00:01:40.04\00:01:43.25 open our understanding as he did those disciples of his. 00:01:43.28\00:01:46.93 Father in heaven, we just ask that the Holy Spirit would now 00:01:46.97\00:01:50.59 give us understanding as we study your word. We ask it in 00:01:50.62\00:01:54.21 Jesus' name, Amen. I'm beginning in Acts chapter 1 00:01:54.24\00:01:58.79 and verse 1. The Bible says here The former account I made, O 00:01:58.82\00:02:02.98 Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and to teach... 00:02:03.02\00:02:08.11 Now as we mentioned last time Luke the apostle is writing here 00:02:08.15\00:02:13.21 the doctor I should say, is writing here his account to a 00:02:13.24\00:02:17.54 friend names Theophilus of his infallible proofs of the gospel 00:02:17.57\00:02:21.89 of Jesus Christ and the acts that followed in the 00:02:21.93\00:02:25.88 proclamation of that gospel. It says in verse 2, he says: 00:02:25.92\00:02:28.92 In fact I should start in verse 1 again: The former account I 00:02:28.96\00:02:32.22 made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and to 00:02:32.26\00:02:35.90 teach until the day in which he was taken up after he through 00:02:35.94\00:02:39.16 the Holy Spirit had given commandment to the apostles who 00:02:39.20\00:02:43.12 he had chosen, to whom he also presented himself alive after 00:02:43.16\00:02:47.02 his suffering by many infallible proofs being seen by them during 00:02:47.05\00:02:50.86 forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom 00:02:50.89\00:02:55.09 of God. And being assembled together with them he commanded 00:02:55.13\00:02:59.29 them not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the 00:02:59.33\00:03:02.87 promise of the Father which he said you have heard from me; for 00:03:02.91\00:03:07.29 John truly baptized with water but you shall be baptized with 00:03:07.32\00:03:11.26 the Holy Spirit not many days from now. Now this is something 00:03:11.30\00:03:15.77 apparently very important to Jesus. You know he's given them 00:03:15.80\00:03:18.99 a commission. You got to put yourself there. I mean here's 00:03:19.03\00:03:22.08 your job, you want to do this job, this is your task. Go out 00:03:22.12\00:03:26.13 and do it, but wait, don't do it yet. I want you to wait until 00:03:26.17\00:03:29.54 you receive the promise of the Father. Now what is this and why 00:03:29.57\00:03:32.91 is this so important, this promise of the Father? Jim. 00:03:32.94\00:03:36.01 Yeah, well first I think it's important to recognize that he 00:03:36.05\00:03:40.51 was asking them to have faith. You know it's not always easy to 00:03:40.55\00:03:45.15 wait on the Lord, to wait on something that has been promised 00:03:45.18\00:03:49.55 but he says God has promised and now you need to show and 00:03:49.58\00:03:53.91 exercise faith before that promise can be realized. 00:03:53.95\00:03:56.65 And as we look in the book of John we find where this promise 00:03:56.69\00:04:01.05 can be traced back to. So let's take our Bible and go back to... 00:04:01.08\00:04:05.40 It sounds to me, I want to interject here, but it sounds to 00:04:05.44\00:04:09.04 me like you're equating faith in this case with some waiting. 00:04:09.07\00:04:12.64 There's some waiting involved when we exercise faith. 00:04:12.68\00:04:16.82 Yeah that's exactly right. 00:04:16.85\00:04:18.80 Well let's go to John 14 and see if we can see where this promise 00:04:18.84\00:04:24.64 of the Father is referenced in the gospels. John 14 and 00:04:24.67\00:04:30.17 beginning in verse 12; we'll start there. It says: Most 00:04:30.20\00:04:35.63 assuredly I say to you, he who believes in me, the works that 00:04:35.66\00:04:39.48 I do, he will do also, and greater works then these he will 00:04:39.51\00:04:43.70 do because I go to my Father. So he's promising great works 00:04:43.74\00:04:47.56 for his disciples who follow after him because he says he 00:04:47.60\00:04:51.36 goes to his Father. And whatever you ask in my name, that I will 00:04:51.39\00:04:55.22 do that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask 00:04:55.26\00:04:58.94 anything in my name I will do it. Which is another wonderful 00:04:58.97\00:05:02.62 promise. Now it says in verse 15 If you love me keep my 00:05:02.66\00:05:07.36 commandments and I will pray the Father (I'll ask the Father) and 00:05:07.39\00:05:12.99 he will give you another helper that he may abide with you 00:05:13.02\00:05:17.30 forever. The Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive 00:05:17.34\00:05:21.55 because it neither sees him nor knows him, but you know him for 00:05:21.59\00:05:26.11 he dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you 00:05:26.15\00:05:30.89 orphans, I will come to you. So here you have this promise 00:05:30.92\00:05:34.71 that is guaranteed and Jesus in the beginning of the book of 00:05:34.74\00:05:39.38 Acts is preparing to go away. He's preparing to ascend into 00:05:39.42\00:05:44.21 heaven and he's reminding them that when he goes away he will 00:05:44.24\00:05:48.45 not leave them orphans, he will come to them. But how will he 00:05:48.48\00:05:52.19 come to them. According to the passage, he will come to them in 00:05:52.22\00:05:56.06 the person of the Helper, the Holy Spirit, who he will ask the 00:05:56.10\00:05:59.71 Father. The Father will grant him the privilege and authority 00:05:59.74\00:06:03.51 to give the Holy Spirit in great measure to the early church 00:06:03.54\00:06:07.27 and so they were asked to wait for this promise. 00:06:07.31\00:06:08.95 That's right. And evidently and very clearly without this gift 00:06:08.99\00:06:13.08 of the Holy Spirit we wouldn't have the book of Acts. In fact, 00:06:13.12\00:06:16.60 some people have referred to the book of Acts because the 00:06:16.63\00:06:19.91 original title of the book is actually just Acts; it's not 00:06:19.95\00:06:22.91 Acts of the Apostles, and some people have referred to it as 00:06:22.94\00:06:25.78 the acts of the Holy Spirit which very clearly we see the 00:06:25.82\00:06:28.99 Holy Spirit's power working throughout the book, so much so 00:06:29.03\00:06:32.13 that some Christians have gotten the understanding that the Holy 00:06:32.17\00:06:36.52 Spirit was a New Testament phenomenon. One of the passages 00:06:36.55\00:06:41.37 that leads people to that thought process is in John 16. 00:06:41.41\00:06:46.02 When we're looking at the teaching of Jesus about the Holy 00:06:46.05\00:06:50.60 Spirit, we'll go to John 16 and Jesus says in verse 5: But now I 00:06:50.63\00:06:56.00 go away to him who sent me and none of you asks me where are 00:06:56.03\00:07:00.24 you going. But because I have said these things to you sorrow 00:07:00.28\00:07:04.45 has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the 00:07:04.49\00:07:08.33 truth. It is to your advantage that I go away for if I do not 00:07:08.37\00:07:12.52 go away the Helper will not come to you, but if I depart I will 00:07:12.56\00:07:16.04 send him to you. And as we read on here we're seeing that he's 00:07:16.08\00:07:19.38 talking about the Holy Spirit. In fact, the heading in my Bible 00:07:19.42\00:07:22.52 here says The Work of the Holy Spirit. Some people have read 00:07:22.56\00:07:25.67 this to say well as long as Jesus is there the Holy Spirit 00:07:25.71\00:07:28.75 doesn't come and we see the Holy Spirit coming with power as they 00:07:28.79\00:07:31.21 are waiting for the promise of the Father there in the book of 00:07:31.24\00:07:33.63 Acts and so therefore the Holy Spirit must be some New 00:07:33.67\00:07:37.92 Testament phenomenon. Before I touch on that too much there's a 00:07:37.96\00:07:42.54 legitimate question here when Jesus makes this point: It is 00:07:42.57\00:07:46.94 expedient that I go away. Why was it so important for him to 00:07:46.97\00:07:51.30 go away? It was actually to their 00:07:51.33\00:07:52.76 advantage. It would be better for them that he go than stay. 00:07:52.79\00:07:56.22 Yeah. Why is it to their advantage that he go away to 00:07:56.25\00:08:02.15 make way for the Holy Spirit? Now if we go ahead to verse 14 00:08:02.19\00:08:06.74 I want you to notice there in John 16:14, Jesus makes a point. 00:08:06.78\00:08:11.75 He says: He will glorify me and he will take of what is mine and 00:08:11.78\00:08:15.42 declare it to you. Now we want to hold onto that and there are 00:08:15.45\00:08:19.05 a couple other passages that kind of go along with this. 00:08:19.08\00:08:21.64 I think you have one in John as well. 00:08:21.67\00:08:23.24 Yes. In John 15 and verse 26 we see a very revealing passage as 00:08:23.27\00:08:30.49 well about the Holy Spirit and what he does. John 15:26. Did I 00:08:30.53\00:08:36.29 say that right? Yes. But when the Helper comes whom I shall 00:08:36.32\00:08:41.20 send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds 00:08:41.24\00:08:46.09 from the Father, he will testify of me. 00:08:46.12\00:08:49.47 Okay, so here we have in the verse we read in John 16:14 he 00:08:49.51\00:08:53.32 says he will glorify me. Jesus is saying this. The Holy Spirit 00:08:53.35\00:08:56.99 is going to take what is mine and he's going to confer it to 00:08:57.03\00:09:00.92 you. Now in the verse you just read in John 15:26 he says the 00:09:00.96\00:09:04.59 Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father will testify of me. 00:09:04.63\00:09:09.24 And then again in John 14:26 the Bible says, again Jesus is 00:09:09.28\00:09:12.63 speaking and teaching about the Holy Spirit. He says: But the 00:09:12.66\00:09:15.93 Helper (the Holy Spirit) whom the Father will send in my name 00:09:15.96\00:09:19.77 will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all 00:09:19.80\00:09:23.54 things that I have said to you. Now think about this. He's going 00:09:23.57\00:09:27.35 to bear witness of me, he's going to glorify me, he's going 00:09:27.38\00:09:30.68 to declare mine to you, he's going to testify of me, all of 00:09:30.71\00:09:34.13 these passages, how is the Holy Spirit going to do those things 00:09:34.17\00:09:38.70 without the ministry of Jesus? He couldn't and it brings to 00:09:38.73\00:09:43.90 mind a passage in 1 Corinthians chapter 15. 1 Corinthians 15 as 00:09:43.93\00:09:48.53 the Apostle Paul is sharing the gospel that he preached, we're 00:09:48.57\00:09:53.13 going to go to verse 1. 1 Corinthians 15:1, he says: 00:09:53.17\00:09:58.22 Moreover brethren I declare to you the gospel which I preached 00:09:58.25\00:10:01.58 to you. Now notice what he says here as he goes on. Which you 00:10:01.62\00:10:04.86 received and in which you stand by which you also are saved if 00:10:04.90\00:10:08.04 if you hold fast that word which I preached to you unless you 00:10:08.07\00:10:11.51 believed in vain. Verse 3: For I delivered to you first of all 00:10:11.55\00:10:15.13 that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins 00:10:15.17\00:10:18.68 according to the scriptures... notice his emphasis on scripture 00:10:18.71\00:10:22.58 there even as we've said already... Christ died for our 00:10:22.61\00:10:26.59 sins according to the scriptures and that he was buried and that 00:10:26.62\00:10:29.93 he rose again the third day according to the scriptures and 00:10:29.97\00:10:32.90 that he was seen by Cephas and the 12, etc. In other words, 00:10:32.93\00:10:36.17 Paul says my gospel that I preached to you was about Jesus' 00:10:36.20\00:10:39.41 death, his burial, his resurrection. The Holy Spirit 00:10:39.44\00:10:42.82 would have no gospel to bear witness to in the hearts of 00:10:42.86\00:10:46.17 God's people had it not been for the ministry of Christ. So what 00:10:46.21\00:10:50.03 I see happening here where Jesus in John 16 is saying: It's 00:10:50.07\00:10:53.80 expedient that I go away or I can't send the Helper is that 00:10:53.83\00:10:58.01 his ministry on earth provided the raw material for the Holy 00:10:58.04\00:11:02.32 Spirit to bring that powerful conviction that we find in the 00:11:02.35\00:11:06.60 book of Acts. I think when we hear that it 00:11:06.63\00:11:11.32 helps to shed a little bit of light but it also could cause 00:11:11.36\00:11:14.40 somebody to come to a wrong conclusion. Some people feel 00:11:14.43\00:11:17.41 that because he provides those raw materials that we don't see 00:11:17.44\00:11:20.96 much of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, but we need to 00:11:20.99\00:11:24.01 clarify that, because the work of the Holy Spirit is something 00:11:24.05\00:11:27.63 that has always been essential for humanity and the place I'd 00:11:27.66\00:11:31.01 like to look is in John chapter 3. So if we can turn to John 00:11:31.04\00:11:35.01 chapter 3. This is a well-known passage of scripture. Of course 00:11:35.04\00:11:38.97 it has John 3:16 perhaps the most well-known verse of 00:11:39.01\00:11:42.46 scripture. But this is a passage in which Nicodemus is in a 00:11:42.49\00:11:46.82 one-on-one interview with Jesus and the focal point of this 00:11:46.85\00:11:51.05 interview is the new birth. Jesus comes right out and says 00:11:51.08\00:11:55.03 to him in verse 3, the Bible says: Jesus answered and said to 00:11:55.06\00:11:59.06 him, Most assuredly I say to you unless one is born again he 00:11:59.10\00:12:03.92 cannot see the kingdom of God. And Nicodemus is not sure how to 00:12:03.95\00:12:08.74 respond to that. Perhaps he's being a little facetious but 00:12:08.77\00:12:11.64 he comes back and says, How can a man be born when he is old? 00:12:11.68\00:12:14.89 Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born? 00:12:14.93\00:12:19.32 And Jesus reiterates, he says in verse 5: Most assuredly I say 00:12:19.36\00:12:22.88 to you unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot 00:12:22.92\00:12:27.74 enter the kingdom of God. Then in verse 9 Nicodemus sort of 00:12:27.77\00:12:32.26 plays ignorant again and it says Nicodemus answered and said to 00:12:32.30\00:12:36.76 him, how can these things be? Then in verse 10 Jesus says 00:12:36.79\00:12:41.16 something very pointed to Nicodemus. It says: Jesus 00:12:41.20\00:12:44.46 answered and said to him, Are you the teacher of Israel and do 00:12:44.50\00:12:48.89 not know these things? Now Nicodemus was a teacher in 00:12:48.92\00:12:53.03 Israel but what did he teach from? Why he taught from the 00:12:53.06\00:12:56.76 scripture, but what scripture? The Old Testament scripture, 00:12:56.79\00:13:00.42 right? That's all he had and yet Jesus expected him from the Old 00:13:00.45\00:13:05.71 Testament scripture to know the doctrine of being born again of 00:13:05.74\00:13:10.97 the Holy Spirit. So certainly the new birth is something 00:13:11.00\00:13:15.15 that has been necessary from the beginning of time until now. 00:13:15.19\00:13:18.65 That's why David prayed in Psalm 51, Take not your Holy Spirit 00:13:18.68\00:13:22.38 away from me. This was very important. There would be no way 00:13:22.42\00:13:27.46 truthfully for humanity to ever do anything right without the 00:13:27.49\00:13:32.01 Holy Spirit, because in our natural flesh we have no good 00:13:32.05\00:13:36.58 inclinations. We require the Holy Spirit for every right 00:13:36.62\00:13:41.09 thought and inclination. And this is why we can never come to 00:13:41.12\00:13:45.63 the conclusion that while the Holy Spirit does have an 00:13:45.67\00:13:48.07 emphasis in the New Testament and has more raw materials to 00:13:48.11\00:13:52.06 work with, he has always been working in the hearts of 00:13:52.09\00:13:54.63 humanity. That's an excellent point, Jim, 00:13:54.67\00:13:56.91 and I want to dive into that more but we need to take a break 00:13:56.95\00:13:59.98 So stick with us. When we come back we're going to talk more 00:14:00.02\00:14:03.01 about the work of the Holy Spirit in conversion. 00:14:03.05\00:14:04.42
