Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.35 Before the break, Mark, we were taking a look at Jesus' 00:00:03.38\00:00:07.68 instruction in the scriptures pointing to his proof of 00:00:07.72\00:00:12.06 messiahship right in the Bible. 00:00:12.09\00:00:13.55 Right, the emphasis of the word. 00:00:13.58\00:00:14.97 The emphasis of the word and the clear evidence in the word and 00:00:15.00\00:00:19.46 this is reflected in both the beginning of Luke and the 00:00:19.50\00:00:22.33 beginning of Acts. So before we dive into that second motivating 00:00:22.37\00:00:25.78 factor, let's go to the beginning of the book of Luke. 00:00:25.82\00:00:28.26 I just want to point something out here. We're beginning in 00:00:28.30\00:00:32.17 Luke chapter 1 and verse 1; it says: Inasmuch as many have 00:00:32.21\00:00:35.55 taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things 00:00:35.59\00:00:38.86 which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the 00:00:38.90\00:00:41.82 beginning were eye witnesses and ministers of the word delivered 00:00:41.86\00:00:44.75 them to us, it seemed good to me also (Luke is referring to 00:00:44.78\00:00:48.64 himself) having had perfect understanding of all things from 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.96 the very first, (so he's saying I've had perfect understanding 00:00:52.00\00:00:55.37 and I know exactly the order of things) to write to you an 00:00:55.41\00:00:58.75 orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know 00:00:58.79\00:01:01.71 the certainty of those things in which you were instructed. 00:01:01.74\00:01:04.60 So in the beginning of the book of Luke he makes his point clear 00:01:04.63\00:01:08.74 that he's writing this book so that Theophilus can have a 00:01:08.78\00:01:13.05 certain factual evidence for his faith. Then you get to the 00:01:13.08\00:01:17.27 beginning of the book of Acts and you find something that's 00:01:17.31\00:01:22.06 very similar. Sorry, it took me a moment here. But in the book 00:01:22.09\00:01:26.80 of Acts in chapter 1 it says the former account I made (he's 00:01:26.83\00:01:29.94 referring to the book of Luke) Oh Theophilus, of all that Jesus 00:01:29.97\00:01:33.54 began both to do and teach until the day in which he was taken up 00:01:33.57\00:01:36.68 after he through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the 00:01:36.72\00:01:40.11 apostles whom he had chosen, to whom he also presented himself 00:01:40.15\00:01:43.51 alive after his suffering by many infallible proofs. 00:01:43.54\00:01:49.02 Again he points to this concept of proof or evidence or 00:01:49.06\00:01:54.50 certainty. I like my margin. It says 00:01:54.54\00:01:57.29 unmistakable proof. Unmistakable proofs. And I 00:01:57.32\00:02:00.72 believe that Jesus gave the disciples that confidence to be 00:02:00.76\00:02:04.24 able to write that way. When at the end of the book of Luke, 00:02:04.27\00:02:08.49 right before his ascension, he opened to their understanding 00:02:08.52\00:02:12.55 the scriptures and gave them such a clear conviction of the 00:02:12.58\00:02:16.08 truth of his messiahship that they were ready and excited to 00:02:16.11\00:02:19.94 share that message with the world. So now there's a second 00:02:19.98\00:02:23.74 motivating factor there in the book of Luke and I wonder if you 00:02:23.77\00:02:26.42 could take us through that. 00:02:26.45\00:02:27.82 Sure. So as you mentioned the first motivating factor is the 00:02:27.85\00:02:31.22 word of God is the foundation for the proof of their faith, 00:02:31.25\00:02:34.94 for the confidence that they're to have. The other factor that 00:02:34.97\00:02:38.41 we see, and I want to go back to Luke again, Luke chapter 24 00:02:38.44\00:02:43.09 and we're going to look at verse 45. One of the things we find, 00:02:43.13\00:02:47.25 Jim, at the end of Luke is that the last part of Luke, the very 00:02:47.29\00:02:51.38 last verses of Luke, are actually the experiences 00:02:51.41\00:02:55.82 repeated in Acts chapter 1. So Luke reiterates the same 00:02:55.85\00:02:59.69 picture again. He doesn't word it exactly the same, but in Luke 00:02:59.73\00:03:04.00 24 verse... of course, verse 45 we looked at him opening their 00:03:04.04\00:03:09.69 understanding and then he says in verse 46: Thus it is written 00:03:09.72\00:03:14.20 and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise 00:03:14.24\00:03:18.69 from the dead the third day (as you just read) and that 00:03:18.72\00:03:20.78 repentance and remission of sin should be preached in his name 00:03:20.82\00:03:24.86 to all nations beginning at Jerusalem. Now I can almost 00:03:24.89\00:03:30.99 imaging the apostles thinking here, wow, preached in all the 00:03:31.02\00:03:34.69 nations. Who's going to do that? Something we don't necessarily 00:03:34.72\00:03:38.65 pick up on is that these guys, we don't see them established 00:03:38.68\00:03:42.72 as preachers in the gospels. You know, even though we see Jesus 00:03:42.75\00:03:46.85 sending them out here and there, we see a commission being given 00:03:46.89\00:03:50.32 and we see the same commission in Matthew and Mark, and worded 00:03:50.36\00:03:53.76 in different ways; go preach the the gospel to all creatures. 00:03:53.80\00:03:57.58 Matthew says, Go ye therefore and teach all nations. So we see 00:03:57.61\00:04:01.36 this commission. Luke's recording it this way, Jesus 00:04:01.39\00:04:04.36 says that the repentance, the remission of sins should be 00:04:04.39\00:04:07.42 preached in his name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem 00:04:07.45\00:04:10.95 and you are witnesses of these things. Behold I send the 00:04:10.98\00:04:13.93 promise of my Father upon you. But tarry in the city of 00:04:13.97\00:04:17.15 Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high. 00:04:17.19\00:04:20.34 Now I want to look at that again in the book of Acts. As I said, 00:04:20.38\00:04:23.36 he repeats the thought and we see a similarity here in Acts 00:04:23.39\00:04:28.41 chapter 1 right after you were reading there in verse 3 about 00:04:28.45\00:04:33.60 how he presented himself alive and gave the infallible proofs. 00:04:33.63\00:04:38.04 In verse 4 of Acts chapter 1 it says: Being assembled together 00:04:38.08\00:04:42.30 with them, he commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem but to 00:04:42.34\00:04:46.52 wait for the promise of the Father. Now we just read that. 00:04:46.56\00:04:49.30 Now why are they waiting for the promise of the Father? Because 00:04:49.34\00:04:51.96 they have been given a responsibility and that 00:04:52.00\00:04:55.17 responsibility is to preach the gospel. We're going to see that 00:04:55.20\00:04:58.20 reiterated here. But I'm going to say right now before we even 00:04:58.24\00:05:01.86 look at this again that the second motivating factor of the 00:05:01.90\00:05:05.53 church in the book of Acts is their, I was going to say 00:05:05.57\00:05:09.14 understanding, but it's not just their understanding, but their 00:05:09.17\00:05:12.46 embracing of the mission to preach the gospel to the world. 00:05:12.49\00:05:16.03 Because of them embracing that mission, and keep in mind this 00:05:16.07\00:05:20.27 is a mission that they knew was way bigger than they were, but 00:05:20.31\00:05:24.48 they embraced it anyway. But because they saw it was more 00:05:24.52\00:05:27.64 than they could do it drove them to their knees pleading with the 00:05:27.67\00:05:31.34 Lord for that promise. And of course we find as we go through 00:05:31.37\00:05:34.26 the book of Acts the Holy Spirit poured out in power and then 00:05:34.29\00:05:37.06 we see the church just expanding all the way through the book of 00:05:37.10\00:05:39.83 Acts but none of it ever would have happened if these 00:05:39.87\00:05:42.97 disciples of Christ did not embrace the mission of the great 00:05:43.01\00:05:47.36 commission. So we see it here. Jesus says wait for the promise 00:05:47.39\00:05:52.17 which you've heard from me, verse 5, for John truly baptized 00:05:52.21\00:05:55.86 with water but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit 00:05:55.90\00:05:59.05 not many days from now. Now verse 6 says: Therefore when 00:05:59.08\00:06:02.57 they had come together they asked him saying, Lord will you 00:06:02.60\00:06:06.02 at this time restore the kingdom to Israel. And this goes back to 00:06:06.05\00:06:09.96 their misunderstanding of the role of the Messiah and we see 00:06:10.00\00:06:12.93 that all through the Jewish nation, even the disciples of 00:06:12.96\00:06:15.68 Jesus, even after he opened their understanding of the 00:06:15.72\00:06:18.37 scripture. They had a tendency to think that the Messiah's role 00:06:18.40\00:06:22.05 was to come and establish them now as a kingdom. But that time 00:06:22.09\00:06:25.94 hadn't come yet and Jesus says in verse 7: It is not for you to 00:06:25.97\00:06:29.79 know times or seasons which the Father has put in his own 00:06:29.83\00:06:33.11 authority, but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has 00:06:33.15\00:06:37.75 come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem 00:06:37.79\00:06:42.28 and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. So we 00:06:42.32\00:06:46.78 start in Jerusalem, Judea, the surrounding area, Samaria, 00:06:46.81\00:06:49.90 further out and we see these concentric circles rippling 00:06:49.94\00:06:52.96 outward and Jesus says basically start at home and then preach 00:06:52.99\00:06:56.62 this gospel to the whole world. So once again we see this 00:06:56.65\00:07:00.19 commission. It's interesting to me, Jim, that he says it's not 00:07:00.23\00:07:04.16 for you to know times or seasons. This is the same Jesus 00:07:04.20\00:07:10.45 who in Matthew 16 actually rebuked the religious leaders 00:07:10.48\00:07:14.80 and said: You hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of 00:07:14.83\00:07:18.73 the sky but you can't discern the signs of the times. And what 00:07:18.77\00:07:22.89 he's saying here is Jesus is not negating the importance of signs 00:07:22.93\00:07:27.02 Matthew 24 we know is one of the most well-known chapters 00:07:27.06\00:07:30.25 for the signs of his coming. But the point he's making here is 00:07:30.29\00:07:34.71 don't get so focused on the signs that you forget the work 00:07:34.74\00:07:38.62 that I've given you to do. Don't forget the mission. So we see 00:07:38.66\00:07:42.51 that the second motivating factor here in the early church 00:07:42.54\00:07:46.94 is, and I maybe want to flesh this out a little bit further, 00:07:46.97\00:07:51.72 it was the passion for souls that their master had. That love 00:07:51.76\00:07:56.30 for souls drove them forward and drove them to their knees and 00:07:56.34\00:08:01.32 drove them to preach the gospel and give the opportunity for the 00:08:01.35\00:08:06.30 world to come to know Jesus Christ and be saved. 00:08:06.34\00:08:08.26 That's powerful. And both of those motivating factors were 00:08:08.29\00:08:14.17 basically Jesus instilling them in the apostles. So before the 00:08:14.20\00:08:19.28 book of Acts could become a reality Jesus had some important 00:08:19.31\00:08:22.85 business he wanted to take care of right there at the end. 00:08:22.89\00:08:26.84 How valuable those last moments after his resurrection but 00:08:26.87\00:08:30.75 before his ascension were with his disciples where he opened up 00:08:30.79\00:08:34.67 the scriptures, gave them clear conviction for their faith so 00:08:34.70\00:08:38.68 that they were ready and had the resources in their heart to go 00:08:38.72\00:08:42.66 and then gave them a clear mission. I love what you said, 00:08:42.69\00:08:46.50 they embraced the mission. They accepted the mission. It was 00:08:46.53\00:08:51.10 something that seemed impossible or seemed beyond their reality 00:08:51.13\00:08:55.30 but because of their growing faith in Jesus they were willing 00:08:55.33\00:08:59.46 to accept it. Absolutely. 00:08:59.50\00:09:00.87 Well I think about another aspect of this and that is that 00:09:00.90\00:09:05.15 as Seventh-day Adventists, we're both Seventh-day Adventist 00:09:05.19\00:09:09.49 ministers and many of our viewers are Seventh-day 00:09:09.52\00:09:11.71 Adventists, the book of Acts has a very special significance 00:09:11.75\00:09:16.60 as well. I want to explore this a little bit by going to the 00:09:16.64\00:09:20.43 last book of the Bible, the book of Revelation. Let's go to 00:09:20.47\00:09:24.22 Revelation chapter 12. Revelation chapter 12 and in 00:09:24.26\00:09:29.73 Revelation chapter 12 we see a symbolic picture of the church 00:09:29.76\00:09:35.02 and the church is described using the symbol of a woman. 00:09:35.05\00:09:39.04 and in the beginning of chapter 12 it says: Now a great sign 00:09:39.07\00:09:42.30 appeared in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun with the 00:09:42.33\00:09:45.50 moon under her feet and on her head a garland of 12 stars. 00:09:45.54\00:09:49.29 So this pure woman the Bible speaks about how we are the 00:09:49.32\00:09:53.01 bride of Christ. The apostle Paul talks about being presented 00:09:53.04\00:09:57.49 as a chaste virgin to Christ and so we understand that in Bible 00:09:57.53\00:10:02.25 prophecy a woman represents the church. So this church that in 00:10:02.28\00:10:05.90 fact is talking about the early church because later it goes on 00:10:05.93\00:10:09.17 to say that she gives birth to a male child who will rule all 00:10:09.21\00:10:12.45 nations with a rod of iron which is talking about Jesus himself. 00:10:12.49\00:10:15.70 So this would be the church at the time that Jesus came. 00:10:15.73\00:10:18.59 That's right. This is a transitional moment where we see 00:10:18.62\00:10:21.06 the birth actually of the New Testament church. 00:10:21.09\00:10:23.60 There you go. And if you follow the narrative here, the account 00:10:23.64\00:10:27.70 here in the prophecy, something fascinating happens. I'm going 00:10:27.74\00:10:32.01 take us all the way to the end of chapter 12 in Revelation and 00:10:32.05\00:10:36.29 it says in verse 17: And the dragon was enraged with the 00:10:36.33\00:10:40.13 woman. Now if we were to look at verse 9 in Revelation 12 it 00:10:40.16\00:10:43.69 would tell us that the dragon is that serpent of old, the devil 00:10:43.72\00:10:48.24 and Satan. And the dragon was enraged with the church and so 00:10:48.27\00:10:53.65 he went to make war with the rest of her offspring. Now if 00:10:53.69\00:10:57.98 the woman is the church and it describes her as existing for 00:10:58.02\00:11:01.60 this period, or being nourished for this period of a time, times 00:11:01.64\00:11:05.18 and half a time, or 1260 days and in prophetic time that's 00:11:05.22\00:11:10.54 actually a day which equals a literal year, so that's 1260 00:11:10.58\00:11:14.90 years. During the whole period of the middle ages we see the 00:11:14.94\00:11:19.10 picture of the church as the woman. But then it speaks of the 00:11:19.14\00:11:24.04 woman having offspring and not only offspring but the rest of 00:11:24.08\00:11:28.33 her offspring. It gives a clear indication that the rest of her 00:11:28.37\00:11:32.59 offspring would be the last church, the church at the end 00:11:32.62\00:11:36.70 of time. Well another reason for the rest 00:11:36.73\00:11:38.30 is because in Revelation 12 it shows the devil trying to 00:11:38.34\00:11:41.25 corrupt and extinguish the church. 00:11:41.28\00:11:45.02 That's exactly right and these are the ones who remain. In the 00:11:45.06\00:11:49.48 King James in this verse it says the remnant of her seed and 00:11:49.52\00:11:53.88 that's an interesting rendering because remnant is not a word we 00:11:53.91\00:11:57.47 use very often anymore, but we sometimes refer to a remnant of 00:11:57.50\00:12:01.17 cloth. It's a piece of cloth that may be the last remaining 00:12:01.21\00:12:05.05 piece of an original bolt of cloth. It helps give us an 00:12:05.09\00:12:08.86 understanding that the Seventh- day Adventist Church and the 00:12:08.89\00:12:14.02 church at the end of time should ultimately be a piece of that 00:12:14.06\00:12:18.05 original, it should look like that original church. So when 00:12:18.09\00:12:21.14 we're reading the book of Acts we need to recognize that it 00:12:21.18\00:12:25.74 is a prescription, it's very helpful to us to know what the 00:12:25.78\00:12:30.01 church today should look like. It's a model for us. And you 00:12:30.05\00:12:33.45 know when I look I think does the church look like that today? 00:12:33.49\00:12:36.85 Not totally, when you see the power in the book of Acts. 00:12:36.89\00:12:40.59 But I'd like to share a statement in closing that I find 00:12:40.63\00:12:44.60 very encouraging from a book called the Great Controversy. 00:12:44.63\00:12:48.57 It's a wonderful statement. It says: Before the final 00:12:48.61\00:12:52.21 visitation of God's judgments upon the earth there will be a 00:12:52.25\00:12:55.79 revival of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed since 00:12:55.83\00:12:59.94 apostolic times. There will be a revival in the church at the 00:12:59.97\00:13:03.05 end of time that hasn't been seen since the book of Acts. 00:13:03.09\00:13:06.13 That's right. So we're looking forward to 00:13:06.17\00:13:08.98 seeing that revival in the book of Acts. But for today we're 00:13:09.02\00:13:12.64 out of time. So thank you for joining us today for our study 00:13:12.67\00:13:16.27 on Books of the Book. Join us next time as we continue and 00:13:16.31\00:13:19.87 dive into the book of Acts 00:13:19.91\00:13:21.28
