Welcome to Books of the Book. I'm so excited that you've 00:00:23.49\00:00:26.64 joined us for a study in the book of Acts. My name is 00:00:26.68\00:00:29.39 Mark Howard. I'm a pastor in the Michigan Conference of 00:00:29.42\00:00:32.06 Seventh-day Adventists. I live there in Gilbus, Michigan with 00:00:32.10\00:00:34.58 my wonderful and beautiful wife Stephanie and my two children 00:00:34.61\00:00:38.27 Caleb and Analise. My co-host is actually somebody very close to 00:00:38.30\00:00:41.92 me. That's right. That is my brother Jim. 00:00:41.96\00:00:46.06 Yes. My name is Jim Howard and I also am a pastor in the 00:00:46.10\00:00:49.87 Michigan Conference. I pastor a church in Plymouth, Michigan, 00:00:49.91\00:00:53.12 the Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist church as well as a 00:00:53.16\00:00:56.38 church in South Lyon, Michigan. We're excited about this 00:00:56.42\00:00:59.61 particular study, aren't we? Absolutely. 00:00:59.65\00:01:01.44 Now before we dive into what we want to talk about today, we 00:01:01.48\00:01:05.31 want to start a precedent here in our program and ask the Lord 00:01:05.34\00:01:08.85 to especially bless the time that we spend with you. So let's 00:01:08.89\00:01:12.36 bow our heads together as we start with prayer. 00:01:12.40\00:01:16.46 Father in heaven, we're so grateful for this opportunity we 00:01:16.49\00:01:20.66 have to study your word. We understand that the word is 00:01:20.70\00:01:24.31 living and powerful and so we pray that you would bring it 00:01:24.35\00:01:28.49 alive to us and help us to understand from the word exactly 00:01:28.53\00:01:32.06 what you would have us to know, for we ask it in Jesus' name 00:01:32.10\00:01:35.60 Amen. Amen. Now today we begin our study in 00:01:35.63\00:01:40.57 the book of Acts and because there is so much to understand 00:01:40.61\00:01:45.31 leading into the book of Acts, today's program will actually be 00:01:45.34\00:01:49.61 an introduction to the book. Now the book of Acts was written by 00:01:49.65\00:01:53.88 Luke, the beloved physician, and this would be the sequel 00:01:53.92\00:01:58.64 actually to the gospel of Luke in which Luke writes a narrative 00:01:58.68\00:02:03.56 of the life and ministry and ultimately crucifixion and 00:02:03.60\00:02:08.61 resurrection of Jesus. So the book of Acts is the sequel, the 00:02:08.65\00:02:12.57 second book that he writes to a friend, Theophilus and it's 00:02:12.60\00:02:16.45 important to note that Luke has some counterparts. There's 00:02:16.49\00:02:20.10 Matthew, there's Mark, there's John. So there are four 00:02:20.14\00:02:23.68 different narratives to speak about the life and ministry of 00:02:23.72\00:02:27.06 Jesus. But the book of Acts is the only book that really gives 00:02:27.09\00:02:31.18 us a clear narrative of the beginnings of the early church 00:02:31.22\00:02:35.27 and because of that it's a very special book. 00:02:35.31\00:02:38.26 That's right. It's the only real history we have of the early 00:02:38.29\00:02:42.36 church. We have a history of Christ and his ministry but Acts 00:02:42.39\00:02:46.43 gives us the history of the early church. There's a real 00:02:46.46\00:02:49.79 benefit in that too and that benefit is that it provides us 00:02:49.82\00:02:54.43 a practical application of the theology that we find throughout 00:02:54.46\00:02:59.04 the New Testament scriptures. I mean, for example we have much 00:02:59.07\00:03:03.37 of the New Testament is a theological exposition in the 00:03:03.41\00:03:07.46 letters of Paul and the letters of Peter and what have you. 00:03:07.49\00:03:12.33 But when we come to the book of Acts we actually have a 00:03:12.36\00:03:16.63 practical application of that theology. So when you look 00:03:16.67\00:03:20.21 through the rest of the New Testament you have Romans and 00:03:20.24\00:03:24.10 1st and 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians; a lot of 00:03:24.13\00:03:27.47 letters written to churches that give instruction, give 00:03:27.51\00:03:30.78 theological expositions and yet in most of that you don't have 00:03:30.81\00:03:34.72 an actual narrative of what was going on in the early church but 00:03:34.75\00:03:38.63 we have that in the book of Acts. 00:03:38.66\00:03:40.03 That's right. We have some histories in the letters of Paul 00:03:40.06\00:03:42.13 and that sort of thing, but in the book of Acts we have a 00:03:42.17\00:03:44.53 picture, a practical application we have those letters and those 00:03:44.57\00:03:50.08 teachings in action so we get to see that when we apply the 00:03:50.11\00:03:54.48 counsel of Paul to the Corinthians or to the Romans 00:03:54.51\00:03:57.91 or to the Galatians, we get to see what it looks like in real 00:03:57.94\00:04:02.23 life in the book of Acts. And the benefit of that, Jim, is 00:04:02.26\00:04:07.20 that we have a... Let's take for instance here. When you talk 00:04:07.23\00:04:11.28 about the spiritual gifts and I'll pick on the gift of tongues 00:04:11.31\00:04:15.11 this is something that our viewers may be aware that there 00:04:15.14\00:04:18.53 are a number of different view points on the gift of tongues 00:04:18.57\00:04:23.79 that vary. What is the right view point? Well the book of 00:04:23.82\00:04:29.41 Acts gives us a picture of what that gift looked like whereas 00:04:29.44\00:04:33.69 for example if I'm reading in 1 Corinthians 14 when Paul is 00:04:33.73\00:04:37.90 explaining the gift of tongues, I don't get a picture of what it 00:04:37.94\00:04:41.98 looked like in action. But when I go to Acts chapter 2 and I see 00:04:42.02\00:04:45.83 the Holy Spirit poured out on the early church and I see them 00:04:45.86\00:04:49.37 speaking with tongues I actually get a picture of what it looked 00:04:49.41\00:04:53.28 like and now I can get a clear understanding of the theology 00:04:53.32\00:04:57.23 of the New Testament by looking at how it is played out in the 00:04:57.27\00:05:01.15 New Testament church. Excellent point. You know it's a 00:05:01.19\00:05:05.14 similar situation to another key doctrine for Seventh-day 00:05:05.17\00:05:09.09 Adventists and that's the doctrine of the Sabbath. 00:05:09.12\00:05:12.16 That's correct. And I would say that as we look 00:05:12.19\00:05:15.16 at the book of Acts we have a strong affirmation there 00:05:15.20\00:05:19.62 wouldn't you say, for the Sabbath? 00:05:19.66\00:05:21.03 Absolutely. Because again there are different viewpoints on how 00:05:21.06\00:05:25.86 important the seventh-day Sabbath is today, but when you 00:05:25.90\00:05:29.58 go to the book of Acts, you find a consistent practice, custom, 00:05:29.62\00:05:33.75 is a word that's used often and we find it in the history of the 00:05:33.79\00:05:37.89 life of Jesus as well. But for some the transition point of 00:05:37.92\00:05:41.53 the Sabbath, when the Sabbath became unimportant in the minds 00:05:41.56\00:05:45.73 of some is after the ascension of Christ. But when we come into 00:05:45.76\00:05:49.89 the book of Acts after the ascension of Christ we see a 00:05:49.92\00:05:53.32 consistent practice in the early church of worshiping and 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.67 observing the Sabbath day. Some places where we find synagogues 00:05:56.71\00:06:00.14 and some places where we don't and I bring that up because 00:06:00.18\00:06:03.70 sometimes people say well we find that practice because that 00:06:03.74\00:06:07.84 is what the Jews did and so the early church followed that 00:06:07.88\00:06:11.58 custom to reach the Jews. But we also find, for example, in 00:06:11.61\00:06:14.89 Acts 16, which we're going to come to later in our study, that 00:06:14.93\00:06:17.83 in a place where there wasn't a synagogue, in a place there 00:06:17.87\00:06:21.51 wasn't even a church yet of the Christian church, the people 00:06:21.55\00:06:25.27 customarily met on the Sabbath day by the river side. And so we 00:06:25.31\00:06:30.15 see in the practice of the early church the establishment of the 00:06:30.18\00:06:34.99 Sabbath as we've seen throughout scripture. 00:06:35.03\00:06:37.46 That's right. So this narrative is going to help us, it's going 00:06:37.50\00:06:40.71 give us pictures of the theology of the rest of the New Testament 00:06:40.75\00:06:43.93 in a very practical way. Very good. Now as we get ready to 00:06:43.96\00:06:48.19 dive into the book of Acts it's important for us to think about 00:06:48.22\00:06:52.47 the setting. Remember that Acts is the second part of Luke's 00:06:52.50\00:06:55.91 writings. So we have the book of Luke, then we have the book 00:06:55.94\00:07:00.10 of Acts. Unfortunately we don't have time to do both the book of 00:07:00.13\00:07:04.25 Luke and the book of Acts together in one whole. But it 00:07:04.28\00:07:07.34 would make sense since we can't do that that we at least go to 00:07:07.38\00:07:11.70 the end of the book of Luke and see where it leaves off and what 00:07:11.73\00:07:16.02 really is the impetus for the book of Acts. What are the 00:07:16.05\00:07:19.46 driving motivators for what the apostles are about to do in the 00:07:19.50\00:07:22.97 book of Acts and we find at least two but we're going to 00:07:23.00\00:07:26.75 talk today about two driving motivating factors that existed 00:07:26.79\00:07:30.48 and that Jesus himself gave to the early church that helped to 00:07:30.51\00:07:33.85 motivate them to do all that they did in the book of Acts. 00:07:33.88\00:07:38.19 So let's go there together to Luke 24. We invite you at home, 00:07:38.23\00:07:42.40 if you have your Bibles, to open them up to Luke 24 and as we 00:07:42.44\00:07:46.59 go through these programs we just really encourage you to 00:07:46.62\00:07:50.70 follow along in your own Bibles at home. Now in Luke chapter 24 00:07:50.73\00:07:55.29 in verse 44 we find the very end of the book of Luke some 00:07:55.32\00:08:00.06 powerful words by the Lord Jesus to the apostles, to the 00:08:00.10\00:08:04.77 disciples. It says: Then he said to them, These are the words 00:08:04.81\00:08:09.64 which I spoke to you while I was still with you that all things 00:08:09.68\00:08:14.06 must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses and 00:08:14.09\00:08:18.44 the prophets and the Psalms concerning me. So this is a 00:08:18.47\00:08:23.67 powerful statement being made by the Lord Jesus. He says these 00:08:23.70\00:08:26.47 are things I spoke to you. When I was with you I told you all 00:08:26.50\00:08:30.25 of this. Now, of course, this is after the resurrection, after he 00:08:30.28\00:08:33.29 has appeared to the disciples. So he is saying when I was still 00:08:33.32\00:08:36.31 with you, perhaps he's intending to say when I was walking, you 00:08:36.34\00:08:39.30 know, before my crucifixion I told you about these things. 00:08:39.33\00:08:42.96 Now he's reminding them of them but I think opening their minds 00:08:42.99\00:08:46.61 even more than they ever had been to these things. He says 00:08:46.64\00:08:49.94 that all things must be fulfilled which were written in 00:08:49.97\00:08:53.24 the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms 00:08:53.27\00:08:54.97 concerning me. Now when Jesus was going through his earthly 00:08:55.01\00:08:58.86 ministry he at times told the disciples about how he had to be 00:08:58.90\00:09:02.87 turned over to the chief priests et cetera and given into the 00:09:02.91\00:09:06.85 hands of sinful men and be crucified and raised from the 00:09:06.89\00:09:10.33 dead on the third day. And he said that more than one time to 00:09:10.36\00:09:13.81 them, but they, for whatever reason, were not quite ready to 00:09:13.84\00:09:17.25 receive that. That did not register with them and they 00:09:17.29\00:09:20.89 still were looking for an earthly king to conquer the 00:09:20.92\00:09:24.46 Romans and that's what they saw as a savior. But here we see 00:09:24.49\00:09:28.64 that they're in a better place. Now the crucifixion has happened 00:09:28.68\00:09:32.80 they've gone through their discouragement, the resurrection 00:09:32.83\00:09:36.86 has happened and now they're able to really look at how the 00:09:36.89\00:09:40.58 Bible, the scriptures, the law of Moses, the prophets, the 00:09:40.61\00:09:44.45 Psalms, all pointed to the things that happened to Jesus. 00:09:44.49\00:09:48.00 That's right. If I might interject here we read that he 00:09:48.04\00:09:51.48 opened their understanding and you're talking here about the 00:09:51.51\00:09:55.38 prominence that the scripture has. It's interesting that, you 00:09:55.42\00:09:58.97 know, there are some people today who have an understanding 00:09:59.00\00:10:04.93 that the Bible is outdated, it is not relevant and we have to 00:10:04.96\00:10:10.85 adapt the Bible to meet our current culture or current 00:10:10.88\00:10:14.37 situation. But it's interesting in this passage that the Bible 00:10:14.41\00:10:17.94 wasn't adapted but the disciples were adapted. In other words, 00:10:17.98\00:10:21.74 the Bible wasn't made to fit them, they were made to fit the 00:10:21.78\00:10:25.58 scripture. The scripture can't be broken in the words of Jesus, 00:10:25.62\00:10:29.58 right? And so it says he opened their understanding that they 00:10:29.61\00:10:33.36 might comprehend the scriptures and the implication there is 00:10:33.39\00:10:36.68 that the scriptures are the word of truth and when we don't 00:10:36.71\00:10:39.71 see light in them, it's not because there's a problem in the 00:10:39.75\00:10:42.71 scripture but with our understanding. 00:10:42.75\00:10:44.32 Wow! He was opening their minds to the fact that the scripture 00:10:44.36\00:10:48.07 was their authority and they needed to be submitted to that 00:10:48.11\00:10:51.79 ultimate authority when it came to understanding. Well that's 00:10:51.82\00:10:55.49 fascinating. In verse 45 let's look at that. It says, he opened 00:10:55.53\00:10:58.75 their understanding that they might comprehend the scriptures. 00:10:58.78\00:11:01.97 I wish there was more here. I wish we could see the Bible 00:11:02.00\00:11:05.75 study that Jesus gave to his disciples right here because I 00:11:05.79\00:11:10.38 believe that this is where he built the foundation of their 00:11:10.41\00:11:14.64 He gave them the evidence for his messiahship through the 00:11:14.68\00:11:19.15 crucifixion, the resurrection, all the multitude of messianic 00:11:19.19\00:11:22.81 prophecies in the Old Testament. There are some 300 prophecies 00:11:22.84\00:11:25.97 pointing to the Messiah and I'm sure he walked through those 00:11:26.00\00:11:29.64 major prophecies that pointed to his death and resurrection. 00:11:29.67\00:11:32.67 And the reason we can know this is that when we do go through 00:11:32.70\00:11:35.66 the book of Acts we find that they refer to those same 00:11:35.70\00:11:39.99 scriptures. Yeah, repeatedly. 00:11:40.03\00:11:41.40 And they give them as evidence that Jesus was the Messiah. So 00:11:41.43\00:11:44.57 this was really the meeting before the meeting, as it were. 00:11:44.60\00:11:48.21 It was that opportunity for Jesus to open their minds and 00:11:48.25\00:11:51.79 give them clarity of thought and understanding so that they could 00:11:51.82\00:11:54.76 then be able to do what they end up doing in the book of Acts in 00:11:54.80\00:11:58.49 their wonderful ministry. So if we look a little bit further, it 00:11:58.53\00:12:02.24 says, Then he said to them, Thus it is written and thus it was 00:12:02.28\00:12:06.00 necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead 00:12:06.03\00:12:09.71 the third day. That's fascinating. It says thus it is 00:12:09.75\00:12:13.41 written and thus it was necessary for the Christ to 00:12:13.45\00:12:17.05 suffer. It's as if he's saying the reason the Christ had to 00:12:17.08\00:12:21.07 suffer is, yes because we needed salvation, but in the context 00:12:21.11\00:12:25.07 he's saying the reason the Christ had to suffer was 00:12:25.10\00:12:27.32 because it is written that the Christ had to suffer. Isaiah 53 00:12:27.36\00:12:31.78 very clearly expressed that the Christ would have to suffer. 00:12:31.81\00:12:35.76 So in everything I sense something very strong here that 00:12:35.79\00:12:39.24 the Lord Jesus is doing in preparation for the ministry of 00:12:39.28\00:12:43.04 the early church in the book of Acts. He is pointing to the 00:12:43.08\00:12:47.49 scripture rather than pointing to the supernatural works that 00:12:47.52\00:12:51.90 he did when he walked this earth. He could have at this 00:12:51.94\00:12:55.03 moment really emphasized the fact that he was all powerful by 00:12:55.07\00:13:00.16 working some miracle of levitation or whatever it might 00:13:00.20\00:13:03.31 be, doing something that could not possibly be done and say 00:13:03.34\00:13:06.38 I am the Messiah. But he did not want them to base their faith on 00:13:06.42\00:13:10.75 miracles, and as we'll find out in the book of Acts, because the 00:13:10.78\00:13:15.08 devil can work miracles. Yeah, he can be deceiving. So what 00:13:15.11\00:13:19.46 Jesus was doing here was pointing them to the scripture 00:13:19.50\00:13:23.78 and helping them to see that you need a clear evidence for your 00:13:23.81\00:13:28.37 faith and not even me and all my power and glory do I want you to 00:13:28.40\00:13:32.72 put your confidence in apart from the scriptures and what the 00:13:32.75\00:13:36.49 scriptures teach. So he built that foundation and that was 00:13:36.53\00:13:41.41 the very first motivating factor for the book of Acts and what 00:13:41.45\00:13:46.30 we see in the book of Acts that Jesus gave was this 00:13:46.33\00:13:49.52 foundation of the primacy of the word of God. Well we need to 00:13:49.56\00:13:53.23 dive into a little bit more of that but before we do we need to 00:13:53.27\00:13:57.33 take a break. So join us back in a few minutes and we'll continue 00:13:57.37\00:14:01.40 our study in the book of Acts. 00:14:01.44\00:14:03.84
