No. 00:06:47.70\00:06:49.64 Oh, good, you got room for more because we've got more now. 00:06:49.67\00:06:54.28 We are going to be talking about the heavenly sanctuary 00:06:54.31\00:06:58.68 but before we do, 00:06:58.71\00:07:00.15 I want to kneel and ask God to bless our time in His Word. 00:07:00.18\00:07:03.25 So I'm going to do that. 00:07:03.28\00:07:04.62 I'm going to invite you to bow your heads with me as I do so. 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.09 Heavenly Father, we thank You so much 00:07:10.56\00:07:12.29 for Your love for us, 00:07:12.33\00:07:14.83 for the gift of your Son Jesus Christ 00:07:14.86\00:07:18.07 who lifts us up. 00:07:18.10\00:07:20.14 Father we ask now that Your Spirit would be present 00:07:20.17\00:07:23.24 to give us understanding in Your Word. 00:07:23.27\00:07:26.27 Bless us to that end, we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. 00:07:26.31\00:07:33.11 Now the theme, I was thinking about the theme, 00:07:33.15\00:07:35.05 Exposing The Counterfeit. 00:07:35.08\00:07:38.35 What is it that makes a counterfeit effective? 00:07:38.39\00:07:43.43 You've probably heard it said before 00:07:43.46\00:07:44.79 that you've never seen a three dollar bill 00:07:44.83\00:07:48.26 unless it was some kind of plaything. 00:07:48.30\00:07:49.70 Nobody's ever tried to pass one off. 00:07:49.73\00:07:51.37 Well, I shouldn't say nobody, 00:07:51.40\00:07:52.73 I shouldn't say nobody and here's why? 00:07:52.77\00:07:54.94 I read a story in the news 00:07:54.97\00:07:56.47 about a woman in Covington, Georgia, 00:07:56.50\00:08:00.34 who went to Walmart, 00:08:00.41\00:08:02.64 totaled up her merchandise purchase of about $1600 00:08:02.68\00:08:07.72 and attempted to pay for it with a million dollar bill. 00:08:07.75\00:08:13.12 Now, there's one real big problem with that. 00:08:13.15\00:08:16.32 The U.S. Treasury doesn't print million dollar bills, 00:08:16.36\00:08:20.96 and so that didn't make for a good counterfeit, right? 00:08:21.00\00:08:24.30 What makes a counterfeit good is it is so close to the true. 00:08:24.33\00:08:28.64 And the reason I bring that up is that there's one way, 00:08:28.67\00:08:31.21 you know, Jesus said, in the last days 00:08:31.24\00:08:32.91 the counterfeit would be so crafty 00:08:32.94\00:08:35.31 that the elect would be deceived if possible. 00:08:35.34\00:08:38.75 You know why it's not possible? 00:08:38.78\00:08:41.28 Because we have the Word of God. 00:08:41.32\00:08:42.75 Yeah. 00:08:42.78\00:08:44.12 That verse is in Matthew 24... 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.39 Sorry, 24:24 in the very next verse 00:08:46.42\00:08:48.59 he says, "The very elect will be deceived 00:08:48.62\00:08:49.96 if it were possible..." 00:08:50.03\00:08:51.36 And then he says, "But I have told you beforehand." 00:08:51.39\00:08:54.73 It's what the Lord has told us. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.77 It's our safeguard against the counterfeit. 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.43 So it really doesn't matter 00:08:59.47\00:09:00.97 what I have to say this morning 00:09:01.00\00:09:02.40 or any other speaker here throughout this camp meeting. 00:09:02.44\00:09:04.91 What really matters is what the Word of God says. 00:09:04.94\00:09:06.91 Amen? Amen. 00:09:06.94\00:09:08.28 Now the question that I am going to be addressing 00:09:08.31\00:09:10.58 is the question, 00:09:10.61\00:09:11.95 why do you claim there's a sanctuary in heaven? 00:09:11.98\00:09:17.12 And the short answer is because there is one. 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.99 How about that? Let's pray. 00:09:20.02\00:09:22.22 No, we are not going to... 00:09:22.26\00:09:23.59 We'll go to the Word. 00:09:23.66\00:09:24.99 I don't want you to go with my opinion on it 00:09:25.03\00:09:26.66 but I'm going to tell you that if you haven't studied this, 00:09:26.73\00:09:29.76 there is an abundance of evidence in scripture 00:09:29.80\00:09:33.94 for a heavenly sanctuary, 00:09:33.97\00:09:35.97 and more than just evidence 00:09:36.00\00:09:37.84 of the existence of a heavenly sanctuary, 00:09:37.87\00:09:40.48 it's something that deeply affects 00:09:40.51\00:09:43.95 the experience of every Christian 00:09:43.98\00:09:45.55 living in these last days. 00:09:45.58\00:09:47.15 So I'm going to address this from four areas of thought, 00:09:47.22\00:09:49.02 okay? 00:09:49.05\00:09:50.39 The first is eyewitness testimony. 00:09:50.42\00:09:52.29 Bible gives us some eyewitness testimony 00:09:52.32\00:09:54.26 of the existence of the heavenly sanctuary. 00:09:54.29\00:09:56.52 The second area is what we call Typology. 00:09:56.56\00:09:58.63 I'll explain that when we get into it. 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.83 The third area is Christology. 00:10:00.90\00:10:02.93 Christology is a theological word 00:10:02.96\00:10:04.90 for the study related to the person 00:10:04.93\00:10:07.84 and the work of Jesus Christ. 00:10:07.87\00:10:09.60 And then the last area is Prophecy. 00:10:09.64\00:10:11.87 All of these different areas give us understanding 00:10:11.91\00:10:15.34 about the existence 00:10:15.38\00:10:16.85 and the work of the heavenly sanctuary. 00:10:16.91\00:10:20.28 So let's start with eyewitness testimony. 00:10:20.32\00:10:22.58 Now, I'm hoping you have your Bibles with you, right, 00:10:22.62\00:10:25.45 because if we're running to expose the counterfeit, 00:10:25.49\00:10:28.76 you don't want to go with my say-so 00:10:28.79\00:10:30.29 or anybody else's say-so, 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.66 I want you to open your Bibles with me. 00:10:31.69\00:10:33.36 We're going to go to 2 Corinthians 13. 00:10:33.40\00:10:36.30 In the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:10:36.33\00:10:39.77 1 Corinthians, 00:10:39.80\00:10:41.20 2 Corinthians 13:1. 00:10:41.24\00:10:47.81 I just want you to see 00:10:47.84\00:10:49.18 what the scripture admonishes us here. 00:10:49.21\00:10:53.28 2 Corinthians 13:1. 00:10:53.35\00:10:55.48 The apostle says, "This will be the third time 00:10:55.52\00:10:57.72 I am coming to you..." 00:10:57.75\00:10:59.09 And then he quotes from the Book of Deuteronomy 00:10:59.12\00:11:01.09 and says, "By the mouth of" what? 00:11:01.12\00:11:04.33 "Two or three witnesses 00:11:04.36\00:11:06.63 every word shall be established." 00:11:06.70\00:11:08.60 Now, this is a Bible principle 00:11:08.63\00:11:09.96 that tells us don't just take one person say-so, 00:11:10.03\00:11:11.60 get a number of witnesses. 00:11:11.63\00:11:12.97 Well, that makes sense, 00:11:13.00\00:11:14.34 so we're going to look at four witnesses, 00:11:14.37\00:11:15.97 how about that? 00:11:16.00\00:11:17.37 We're going to look at four witnesses in scripture 00:11:17.41\00:11:18.81 who saw the heavenly sanctuary. 00:11:18.84\00:11:21.31 The first we're going to look at is Moses. 00:11:21.34\00:11:22.78 We're going to the Book of Exodus. 00:11:22.81\00:11:25.01 Old Testament Book of Exodus 00:11:25.05\00:11:26.38 is the second book in the Bible. 00:11:26.41\00:11:27.85 We're going to Exodus 25. 00:11:27.88\00:11:29.88 Now, I should probably interject here 00:11:29.92\00:11:31.95 that when you're talking about 00:11:31.99\00:11:34.49 and studying about the sanctuary, 00:11:34.52\00:11:36.26 this is something that was the entire foundation 00:11:36.29\00:11:41.20 of the Hebrew economy in the Old Testament. 00:11:41.23\00:11:44.70 And there is much about it in the New Testament, 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.60 so one sermon is not going to exhaust the subject 00:11:46.67\00:11:49.30 of the heavenly sanctuary and that's not my intention. 00:11:49.34\00:11:51.64 I wish we could read all through Exodus 00:11:51.67\00:11:53.51 and pick up different things, 00:11:53.54\00:11:54.88 but we're going to zero in 00:11:54.91\00:11:56.88 on Moses' testimony in Exodus 25:40. 00:11:56.91\00:12:03.15 Now this is in the midst of instruction 00:12:03.18\00:12:05.75 that God is giving him 00:12:05.79\00:12:07.89 regarding the sanctuary and its furnishings, 00:12:07.92\00:12:10.86 the earthly sanctuary or the tent 00:12:10.93\00:12:13.29 out in the wilderness, 00:12:13.33\00:12:14.63 and in Exodus 25:40, it says, 00:12:14.66\00:12:17.13 "And see to it 00:12:17.17\00:12:19.17 that you make them according to the" what? 00:12:19.20\00:12:22.64 "Pattern which was shown you on the mountain." 00:12:22.67\00:12:26.07 So in other words, 00:12:26.11\00:12:27.44 Moses directed the building of the earthly tabernacle 00:12:27.48\00:12:31.75 or temple or sanctuary based on a pattern 00:12:31.78\00:12:34.42 that God showed him. 00:12:34.45\00:12:35.78 And that pattern that he saw was the heavenly sanctuary. 00:12:35.82\00:12:38.92 It's not defined that clearly right here, 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.52 but it will be in a moment, we'll get to that, 00:12:42.56\00:12:44.23 but right now take my word for it, 00:12:44.29\00:12:46.66 we will verify that in scripture, 00:12:46.70\00:12:48.16 but the first eye witness testimony 00:12:48.20\00:12:49.56 we have is that of Moses. 00:12:49.60\00:12:51.93 Now David also saw the heavenly sanctuary. 00:12:51.97\00:12:54.97 We're going to the Book of Psalms, 00:12:55.00\00:12:56.34 actually going to the 102 Psalm. 00:12:56.37\00:13:00.58 Psalm 102... 00:13:00.61\00:13:04.48 and we are looking at verse 19. 00:13:07.82\00:13:12.52 Psalm 102:19. 00:13:15.52\00:13:19.09 And this is what David says. 00:13:19.13\00:13:25.50 Let's start in verse 18 says, 00:13:25.53\00:13:27.00 "This will be written for the generation to come 00:13:27.04\00:13:29.97 that a people yet to be created may praise" who? 00:13:30.01\00:13:34.51 "The Lord, for He, the Lord, looked down from the height" 00:13:34.54\00:13:38.35 of what? 00:13:38.38\00:13:39.71 "His sanctuary from heaven the Lord viewed the earth." 00:13:39.75\00:13:43.35 So David here sees the Lord, 00:13:43.39\00:13:44.72 looking down from His sanctuary in heaven. 00:13:44.75\00:13:47.86 He's an eyewitness and saw it. 00:13:47.89\00:13:49.52 Let's look at another place where David tells us 00:13:49.56\00:13:51.79 something similar back in Psalm 11. 00:13:51.83\00:13:55.50 Psalm 11. 00:13:55.53\00:13:57.03 And we're going to look at verse 4. 00:13:57.10\00:14:00.57 Psalm 11:4. 00:14:00.64\00:14:02.80 The Bible says in Psalm 11:4. 00:14:09.78\00:14:11.85 "The Lord is in His Holy Temple." 00:14:11.88\00:14:16.79 The Lord's throne is in heaven. 00:14:16.82\00:14:19.49 "His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men." 00:14:19.52\00:14:22.72 So here again, David sees the Lord on His throne, 00:14:22.76\00:14:26.06 in His temple, in heaven. 00:14:26.09\00:14:27.96 Do you see that? 00:14:28.00\00:14:29.56 Okay, now, so we've got Moses' eye witness testimony, 00:14:29.60\00:14:32.03 we've got David's eyewitness testimony. 00:14:32.07\00:14:35.50 Let's go to the well-known and oft-read Book of Habakkuk. 00:14:35.54\00:14:42.38 Okay, if you find your way to Ezekiel then Daniel, Hosea, 00:14:42.41\00:14:45.41 Joe, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, 00:14:45.45\00:14:50.69 and then if you get to Zephaniah, 00:14:50.75\00:14:52.09 you went a little too far, 00:14:52.12\00:14:53.46 you could just work your way from Matthew 00:14:53.49\00:14:54.82 and work back just a few books 00:14:54.86\00:14:56.19 and you'll find the Book of Habakkuk 00:14:56.22\00:15:01.53 who also gives us an eye witness testimony. 00:15:01.56\00:15:05.20 In fact, you might not know the book very well. 00:15:05.23\00:15:08.57 How many of you know the hymn, 00:15:08.60\00:15:10.04 "The Lord is in His holy temple." 00:15:10.11\00:15:12.27 Okay, that comes from Habakkuk 2:20. 00:15:12.31\00:15:17.08 And that kind of gives it away, right? 00:15:17.15\00:15:18.85 Habakkuk 2:20 says, "The Lord is in His holy temple. 00:15:18.88\00:15:23.02 Let all the" what? 00:15:23.05\00:15:24.89 "Earth keep silent before him." 00:15:24.92\00:15:26.62 The implication is, He's not on the earth, 00:15:26.65\00:15:28.59 He's in heaven, in His temple in heaven, 00:15:28.62\00:15:31.26 but all the earth keep silent 00:15:31.29\00:15:32.69 in the sense of reverent silence 00:15:32.73\00:15:35.86 before the Lord. 00:15:35.90\00:15:37.23 So Habakkuk saw the holy temple in heaven, 00:15:37.27\00:15:41.34 the heavenly sanctuary. 00:15:41.37\00:15:42.70 And the last testimony we're going to take is 00:15:42.74\00:15:45.31 that of John the Revelator in the Book of Revelation. 00:15:45.34\00:15:49.18 Now I don't know if you have really done much study on this 00:15:49.21\00:15:52.08 or paid a lot of attention on this 00:15:52.11\00:15:53.52 but the setting of the Book of Revelation 00:15:53.58\00:15:56.89 is the temple in heaven. 00:15:56.95\00:15:58.82 And it's fascinating. 00:15:58.85\00:16:00.29 I'll just show you that in a few different places. 00:16:00.32\00:16:01.66 Now in Revelation 1, if you read in Revelation 1, 00:16:01.69\00:16:03.89 you see Jesus dressed in priestly garments, 00:16:03.96\00:16:07.03 He's walking among the lampstands, 00:16:07.03\00:16:09.33 but a lot of scholars say that those images are used there 00:16:09.36\00:16:12.07 but were not actually in the temple itself. 00:16:12.10\00:16:14.14 Well, that's kind of... 00:16:14.17\00:16:15.50 There is divided thought on that, 00:16:15.54\00:16:16.87 but when we come to Revelation 4, 00:16:16.91\00:16:18.31 look at Revelation 4 with me right there in verse 1. 00:16:18.34\00:16:22.14 Revelation 4:1. 00:16:22.18\00:16:24.71 And this is what John saw. 00:16:24.75\00:16:26.08 He says, "After these things I looked, and behold, 00:16:26.11\00:16:30.59 a door standing open," where? 00:16:30.62\00:16:33.12 "In heaven, and the first voice which I heard was 00:16:33.15\00:16:35.92 like a trumpet speaking with me saying," what? 00:16:35.96\00:16:39.63 "Come up here." 00:16:39.66\00:16:40.96 So John sees in the heaven, "Hey, come up, 00:16:41.00\00:16:42.33 I'm gonna show you something" where? 00:16:42.36\00:16:43.83 "In heaven. 00:16:43.87\00:16:45.33 Come up here and I will show you things 00:16:45.37\00:16:47.34 which must take place after this. 00:16:47.40\00:16:50.07 Immediately I was in the spirit and behold," a what? 00:16:50.11\00:16:54.44 "Throne set in heaven and one sat on the throne." 00:16:54.48\00:16:57.61 So he goes into heaven, he sees the throne of God. 00:16:57.65\00:16:59.91 Notice the setting of the throne of God. 00:17:00.05\00:17:02.12 Look at verse 5. 00:17:02.15\00:17:03.52 Verse 5 says, 00:17:03.55\00:17:04.89 "And from the throne proceeded lightnings, 00:17:04.92\00:17:06.49 thunderings, and voices. 00:17:06.52\00:17:07.86 Seven lamps of fire were burning 00:17:07.89\00:17:10.36 before the throne," 00:17:10.39\00:17:11.79 which are the seven Spirits of God. 00:17:11.83\00:17:14.20 Okay, now if you go through 4 and 5 00:17:14.23\00:17:16.56 are kind of a picture together. 00:17:16.60\00:17:17.93 Jump to chapter 5 with me because we're still 00:17:17.97\00:17:20.54 in the same setting of chapter 4. 00:17:20.57\00:17:25.87 And in chapter 5:8 notice what it says. 00:17:25.91\00:17:29.21 "Now when he had taken the scroll 00:17:29.24\00:17:31.15 the four living creatures 00:17:31.18\00:17:32.61 and the 24 elders fell down before the lamp, 00:17:32.65\00:17:35.88 each having a harp 00:17:35.92\00:17:37.29 and golden bowls full of incense 00:17:37.32\00:17:40.29 which are prayers of the saints." 00:17:40.36\00:17:41.79 Now if you study the earthly temple, 00:17:41.82\00:17:43.16 you will recognize that the lampstands 00:17:43.19\00:17:46.09 and the incense are two pieces or articles of furniture 00:17:46.13\00:17:49.56 that are in the holy place of the sanctuary. 00:17:49.60\00:17:54.70 Okay, now if we jump ahead from there to chapter 8, 00:17:54.74\00:17:57.77 and I'm just skimming through this quickly. 00:17:57.81\00:18:00.81 Chapter 8 and notice verse 3. 00:18:00.84\00:18:06.65 Revelation 8:3 says, 00:18:06.68\00:18:08.18 "Then another angel having a golden censer..." 00:18:08.22\00:18:11.02 A censer was a dish that they would put the incense in, 00:18:11.05\00:18:14.72 and you see in chapter 8:3 00:18:14.76\00:18:16.39 it says, "He had a golden censer 00:18:16.42\00:18:17.89 and he came and stood at what? 00:18:17.93\00:18:20.63 The altar, and he was given much incense, 00:18:20.66\00:18:23.70 so specifically the Bible spelling out here 00:18:23.77\00:18:26.23 the altar of incense in heaven where John is looking. 00:18:26.27\00:18:30.91 Now jump to Revelation 11 with me. 00:18:30.94\00:18:33.88 Revelation 11 and look at verse 19. 00:18:33.91\00:18:39.18 Revelation 11:19. 00:18:39.21\00:18:40.95 You don't get clearer than this. 00:18:40.98\00:18:43.99 Revelation 11:19. 00:18:44.02\00:18:46.52 John says, "Then," the what? 00:18:46.55\00:18:48.62 "The temple of God was opened," where? 00:18:48.66\00:18:51.09 "In heaven." 00:18:51.13\00:18:52.46 That kind of settles it, doesn't it? 00:18:52.49\00:18:53.83 Is there a temple in heaven? Apparently so. Right? 00:18:53.90\00:18:56.93 The temple of God, John sees it is opened in heaven 00:18:56.97\00:19:00.27 and I beheld, I saw, I got to find my place again, 00:19:00.30\00:19:05.31 is open in heaven in the Ark of his Covenant was seen 00:19:05.34\00:19:09.28 in His temple. 00:19:09.31\00:19:12.28 So here we have a piece of furniture 00:19:12.31\00:19:13.98 that is known in the earthly temple 00:19:14.05\00:19:15.38 as part of the most holy place 00:19:15.42\00:19:17.05 but John sees it in heaven's temple. 00:19:17.12\00:19:19.59 So we've got eyewitness testimony from Moses, 00:19:19.62\00:19:21.52 and from David, and from Habakkuk, 00:19:21.56\00:19:22.99 and from John. 00:19:23.02\00:19:24.43 Okay, in the mouth of four witnesses, 00:19:24.46\00:19:26.73 we've established it. 00:19:26.76\00:19:28.06 We're going to see a fifth witness 00:19:28.10\00:19:29.50 as we move from eyewitness testimony to 00:19:29.53\00:19:32.13 what we call typology. 00:19:32.17\00:19:34.44 Now, how many of you here are familiar 00:19:34.47\00:19:36.00 with the terms type and anti-type. 00:19:36.04\00:19:39.54 Okay, in the event that you're not, 00:19:39.57\00:19:42.14 a type is like a model that is pointing forward 00:19:42.18\00:19:46.72 to a greater reality 00:19:46.75\00:19:49.32 whereas the anti-type is a reality 00:19:49.35\00:19:51.22 that's pointing forward too. 00:19:51.25\00:19:52.65 So oftentimes we talk about the temple for example, 00:19:52.69\00:19:56.59 the temple itself 00:19:56.62\00:19:59.09 and the things that happened in the temple 00:19:59.13\00:20:01.76 were pointing forward to something 00:20:01.80\00:20:05.73 to a greater reality that would come. 00:20:05.77\00:20:08.30 For example, the sacrifice that 00:20:08.34\00:20:10.31 we often talk about Jesus being the Lamb of God. 00:20:10.37\00:20:12.21 The Bible talks about Jesus being the Lamb of God. 00:20:12.24\00:20:14.31 That when that animal was slain, 00:20:14.34\00:20:16.14 we know that it wasn't about the animal, 00:20:16.18\00:20:17.98 it was pointing forward to Jesus, 00:20:18.01\00:20:20.38 we would call the slaying of the Lamb the type, 00:20:20.42\00:20:23.22 we would call the crucifixion of Jesus the anti-type. 00:20:23.25\00:20:25.89 That's where the reality comes in 00:20:25.92\00:20:27.79 and the other was just pointing forward. 00:20:27.82\00:20:30.03 Okay, now the reason this is important 00:20:30.09\00:20:31.59 when we're talking about the heavenly sanctuary is that 00:20:31.63\00:20:34.76 all of that earthly system 00:20:34.83\00:20:36.80 and we'll see this in scripture, 00:20:36.83\00:20:38.87 the earthly tabernacle, the furniture, 00:20:38.90\00:20:41.27 and the work of the priests was all a type 00:20:41.30\00:20:44.51 that was pointing forward to a greater reality, 00:20:44.54\00:20:49.44 the reality that's in heaven. 00:20:49.48\00:20:52.95 What was happening in the earthly temple was 00:20:52.98\00:20:55.05 not where it was all at. 00:20:55.08\00:20:57.62 It was what was going to come later 00:20:57.65\00:20:59.82 and we'll see again, 00:20:59.85\00:21:01.26 as I said, we're going to see this in scripture. 00:21:01.29\00:21:03.96 So go with me to the Book of Hebrews, 00:21:04.03\00:21:05.56 we're going to spend a good bit of our time in Hebrews 00:21:05.59\00:21:08.56 because Hebrews addresses this whole concept of type 00:21:08.60\00:21:14.24 and anti-type. 00:21:14.27\00:21:15.60 In fact, I probably ought to interject here. 00:21:15.64\00:21:17.01 There are some people that get confused with Hebrews 00:21:17.07\00:21:19.67 and I'll tell you why in a minute, 00:21:19.71\00:21:21.11 you'll see why in a minute maybe you'd be one of them, 00:21:21.14\00:21:23.14 where they look at Hebrews 00:21:23.18\00:21:24.51 and they think Hebrews is trying 00:21:24.55\00:21:25.88 to compare the work of the holy place 00:21:25.91\00:21:28.58 with the most holy place. 00:21:28.62\00:21:30.55 But the whole Book of Hebrews is 00:21:30.59\00:21:32.59 actually comparing the type with the anti-type, 00:21:32.62\00:21:35.06 the earthly with the heavenly. 00:21:35.09\00:21:36.69 The earthly sanctuary with the heavenly sanctuary, 00:21:36.73\00:21:38.53 the earthly priesthood with the heavenly priesthood, 00:21:38.56\00:21:41.13 and we're going to see that 00:21:41.16\00:21:42.93 as we look at some passages here. 00:21:42.96\00:21:44.60 Hebrews 8:1. 00:21:44.63\00:21:47.90 Hebrews 8:1, now notice what the apostle says here. 00:21:47.94\00:21:52.17 Now you can catch me saying Paul, 00:21:52.21\00:21:53.54 I believe Paul wrote Hebrews, but there are some people 00:21:53.61\00:21:55.44 who contest that, that's fine, 00:21:55.48\00:21:56.81 but the author of Hebrews I assume that 00:21:56.88\00:21:58.55 it's the Apostle Paul. 00:21:58.58\00:22:00.42 Starts out in verse 1, it says, 00:22:00.45\00:22:02.02 "This is the main point of the things 00:22:02.05\00:22:04.29 we are saying, "We have such a" what? 00:22:04.32\00:22:07.36 "A high priest who is seated 00:22:07.39\00:22:09.36 at the right hand of the throne of the majesty," where? 00:22:09.39\00:22:13.03 "In the heavens." 00:22:13.06\00:22:14.36 A minister of the sanctuary and of the..." 00:22:14.40\00:22:18.47 Now the New King James says the true tabernacle. 00:22:18.50\00:22:22.00 A tabernacle is another word for tent. 00:22:22.04\00:22:23.81 So he's using the imagery of the Old Testament tent 00:22:23.87\00:22:26.68 that was set up in the wilderness, 00:22:26.74\00:22:28.08 the sanctuary, a minister of the true tabernacle 00:22:28.11\00:22:32.55 which the Lord erected and not man, 00:22:32.58\00:22:35.82 for every high priest is appointed to offer 00:22:35.85\00:22:38.22 both gifts and sacrifices, 00:22:38.25\00:22:39.79 therefore, it is necessary that this one, 00:22:39.82\00:22:41.86 he is speaking of Jesus, our heavenly high priest, 00:22:41.89\00:22:43.73 also had something to offer. 00:22:43.79\00:22:46.76 Notice verse 4, "For if he were on earth, 00:22:46.80\00:22:49.60 he would not be a priest. 00:22:49.63\00:22:51.50 Since there are priests to offer the gifts 00:22:51.53\00:22:53.97 according to the law..." 00:22:54.00\00:22:55.34 And I'm going to come back to that later, who served the, 00:22:55.37\00:22:58.57 he is speaking of the earthly priests 00:22:58.61\00:23:00.48 who offered these gifts, "who serve the" what? 00:23:00.51\00:23:03.68 "The copy and the shadow of the heavenly things." 00:23:03.75\00:23:07.52 So what's he telling us here? 00:23:07.55\00:23:09.25 The apostle is telling us that there is a sanctuary in heaven 00:23:09.28\00:23:12.09 and what was on the earth was merely a copy. 00:23:12.12\00:23:16.12 Okay, it was a shadow or shadowing forth, 00:23:16.16\00:23:18.73 you know, a shadow if you see a shadow, 00:23:18.76\00:23:20.80 if I see I'm looking for my shadow here, 00:23:20.83\00:23:22.20 this floor is reflective, I see my shadow going out here. 00:23:22.23\00:23:24.33 If you follow, then my head is right at your feet 00:23:24.37\00:23:26.57 over there if you see and if you follow the shadow, 00:23:26.60\00:23:28.74 you're going to come up to the substance of the thing 00:23:28.77\00:23:30.67 casting the shadow. 00:23:30.71\00:23:32.44 And the Bible uses this language to say 00:23:32.47\00:23:34.61 when it talks about a shadow, 00:23:34.64\00:23:35.98 it's something that isn't the original substance. 00:23:36.01\00:23:38.35 The earthly temple was a shadow, 00:23:38.38\00:23:39.91 but it was pointing forward to what was casting the shadow, 00:23:39.98\00:23:43.02 that is the heavenly sanctuary, 00:23:43.05\00:23:44.39 it was a type of the heavenly sanctuary. 00:23:44.42\00:23:49.29 Verse 5 again, who serve the copy 00:23:49.32\00:23:50.99 and shadow of heavenly things. 00:23:51.03\00:23:52.73 Notice as Moses was divinely instructed 00:23:52.76\00:23:56.46 when he was about to make the tabernacle, 00:23:56.50\00:23:58.57 for he said, "See that you make all things 00:23:58.60\00:24:02.20 according to the pattern shown you in the mountain". 00:24:02.24\00:24:04.44 So there's the clarification 00:24:04.47\00:24:06.54 that when Moses saw that pattern, 00:24:06.57\00:24:08.21 Paul says the pattern he saw was the temple in heaven. 00:24:08.24\00:24:11.28 Are you with me so far? 00:24:11.31\00:24:12.98 Okay, so you have the type 00:24:13.01\00:24:14.48 and then it's pointing forward very clearly 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.69 to something greater to come the anti-type in heaven. 00:24:16.72\00:24:20.76 Now I want to move on to talk... 00:24:20.79\00:24:23.43 Well, the apostle is actually going to move on here 00:24:23.46\00:24:25.56 in chapter 9 to... 00:24:25.59\00:24:28.50 He's going to begin to describe the earthly temple 00:24:28.53\00:24:31.47 and he's going to make a comparison with that 00:24:31.50\00:24:33.30 and the heavenly. 00:24:33.34\00:24:35.17 Hebrews 9:1. 00:24:35.20\00:24:37.47 The Bible says, "Then, indeed, even the first covenant 00:24:37.51\00:24:39.74 had ordinances of divine service, 00:24:39.77\00:24:41.58 and the" what? 00:24:41.61\00:24:43.14 The earthly sanctuary, for a tabernacle was prepared, 00:24:43.18\00:24:47.48 the first part in which was the lampstand, 00:24:47.52\00:24:50.85 the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary." 00:24:50.89\00:24:56.02 Now your Bibles will all... 00:24:56.06\00:24:58.06 If you're using different versions 00:24:58.09\00:24:59.43 in the New King James, 00:24:59.46\00:25:00.86 you know, they all read a little differently here. 00:25:00.93\00:25:02.76 So I want to flush that out in a moment 00:25:02.80\00:25:04.53 but just follow along. 00:25:04.57\00:25:06.33 He says, "The tabernacle was prepared the first part 00:25:06.37\00:25:08.87 in which were these pieces of furniture 00:25:08.90\00:25:10.81 and it was called the sanctuary." 00:25:10.84\00:25:12.41 Some Bibles will say it was called "the holy place" 00:25:12.44\00:25:14.68 or the "holy" or whatever. 00:25:14.71\00:25:18.21 Verse 3 says, "And behind the" what? 00:25:18.25\00:25:21.25 "The second veil, there were two veils, 00:25:21.28\00:25:23.92 the part of the tabernacle, which is called" what? 00:25:23.99\00:25:28.19 Mine says the holiest of all, 00:25:28.22\00:25:29.66 yours might say the most holy place. 00:25:29.69\00:25:31.66 Okay, so all Paul's doing is saying, 00:25:31.69\00:25:33.70 there was an earthly temple 00:25:33.73\00:25:35.03 and in that earthly temple there were two rooms. 00:25:35.06\00:25:36.97 The first room was called the holy place, 00:25:37.03\00:25:38.73 the second room was called the most holy place. 00:25:38.77\00:25:40.94 In the first room or the holy place 00:25:40.97\00:25:42.37 there were these pieces of furniture. 00:25:42.40\00:25:43.91 And the second room or the most holy place, 00:25:43.97\00:25:45.64 there was this, okay? 00:25:45.67\00:25:47.04 Are you following that? 00:25:47.08\00:25:49.24 Now, here's what I want you to really grab on to. 00:25:49.28\00:25:52.75 In verse 3, now, again, 00:25:52.78\00:25:54.75 this is the way my Bible reads this, 00:25:54.78\00:25:56.85 The New King James version, 00:25:56.89\00:25:58.22 it says, the part of the tabernacle, 00:25:58.25\00:26:00.39 the second apartment is called the holiest of all 00:26:00.42\00:26:03.22 or the most holy place. 00:26:03.26\00:26:05.23 In the Greek language of the New Testament, 00:26:05.26\00:26:07.76 the term that's used 00:26:07.76\00:26:09.53 and translated is the term "Hagia Hagion." 00:26:09.56\00:26:13.03 It means holy of holies. Now listen to me carefully. 00:26:13.07\00:26:16.84 This is the only place 00:26:16.91\00:26:20.08 in the entire New Testament 00:26:20.11\00:26:22.18 that that word is used. 00:26:22.21\00:26:24.18 Now, the reason that's important is 00:26:24.25\00:26:25.78 you're going to see as we go through the passages, 00:26:25.81\00:26:27.72 you're going to find us 00:26:27.75\00:26:29.08 in and out of the most holy place all over. 00:26:29.12\00:26:31.25 You're going to find this text and that text 00:26:31.29\00:26:32.99 and that verse all talking about the most holy place 00:26:33.02\00:26:34.82 but in the Greek we're not in the most holy place, 00:26:34.86\00:26:36.93 we're in the holy place, or the holy places. 00:26:36.96\00:26:40.10 And I'll tell you what I mean by that. 00:26:40.13\00:26:41.83 It's important right now just to note 00:26:41.86\00:26:43.37 that the only time Paul specifically talks about 00:26:43.43\00:26:45.83 or any New Testament writer talks about the most holy place 00:26:45.87\00:26:48.64 is right there in verse 3. 00:26:48.67\00:26:51.07 In the rest of the places, 00:26:51.11\00:26:52.44 it uses the term Hagia or Ta Hagia 00:26:52.47\00:26:55.44 which is plural holy place or holy places. 00:26:55.48\00:26:58.61 It's not defining the most holy place. 00:26:58.65\00:27:00.85 And you'll see how significant that is as we go. 00:27:00.88\00:27:04.25 So he talks about these two apartments of the temple. 00:27:04.32\00:27:08.72 Something else we're going to look at 00:27:08.76\00:27:10.09 in just a moment is that 00:27:10.16\00:27:11.49 the two different rooms in the temple 00:27:11.53\00:27:14.03 were pointing to two different phases 00:27:14.10\00:27:17.63 of the ministry that Christ would do. 00:27:17.67\00:27:22.24 Two different phases of the ministry. 00:27:22.27\00:27:24.11 Now, in Hebrews 9:6, 00:27:24.14\00:27:29.31 he moves from the temple itself to what happens in the temple. 00:27:29.34\00:27:32.31 These two phases of ministry, I'm telling you about, 00:27:32.35\00:27:34.02 verse 6 says now 00:27:34.05\00:27:35.38 when these things had been thus prepared, 00:27:35.42\00:27:38.09 the temple and its compartments and the furniture inside, 00:27:38.12\00:27:42.59 when these things had been prepared, the priests, 00:27:42.62\00:27:45.16 notice the word, the priest always went 00:27:45.19\00:27:48.16 into the first part of the tabernacle 00:27:48.20\00:27:50.43 performing the services. 00:27:50.47\00:27:51.80 The first part was the holy place. 00:27:51.83\00:27:54.50 It says a priest always on a regular basis 00:27:54.54\00:27:56.71 went into that first apartment 00:27:56.77\00:27:58.21 but verse 7, into the second part, 00:27:58.24\00:28:02.24 the second part was called what? 00:28:02.28\00:28:04.28 "The most holy place," 00:28:04.31\00:28:05.65 into the second part the high priest went alone 00:28:05.68\00:28:09.02 once a year not without blood which he offered for himself 00:28:09.05\00:28:12.89 and for the people's sins committed in ignorance. 00:28:12.92\00:28:15.92 And so Paul's just reviewing, you have to understand too, 00:28:15.96\00:28:18.99 he is writing to the Hebrews, they understood this. 00:28:19.03\00:28:21.33 They grew up with this service. Oh, yeah, the temple service. 00:28:21.36\00:28:24.10 Yeah, throughout the year 00:28:24.17\00:28:25.50 you have the service in the holy place, 00:28:25.53\00:28:27.44 but at the conclusion of that year, 00:28:27.47\00:28:31.17 you have the service in the most holy place, 00:28:31.21\00:28:33.24 it was one day 00:28:33.27\00:28:34.61 and it was called The Day of Atonement. 00:28:34.64\00:28:36.24 You might have heard it called Yom Kippur. 00:28:36.28\00:28:37.88 That's just Hebrew Yom means day 00:28:37.91\00:28:39.85 and Kippur means atonement. 00:28:39.88\00:28:41.58 And it's still celebrated by the Hebrews. 00:28:41.62\00:28:43.49 They view it as a very solemn day of judgment 00:28:43.52\00:28:46.22 and also a very joyous day of judgment, 00:28:46.25\00:28:48.19 which is interesting. 00:28:48.22\00:28:50.53 That I'm not going to get into at the moment, 00:28:50.56\00:28:51.99 but these two apartments 00:28:52.03\00:28:54.66 had two different kinds of services. 00:28:54.73\00:28:56.50 Now, I'm going to just give you a quick rundown of 00:28:56.53\00:28:58.17 how it worked. 00:28:58.20\00:29:00.07 In a typical year, 00:29:00.10\00:29:02.00 that daily service throughout the year 00:29:02.04\00:29:04.34 you would have sinners coming to the sanctuary 00:29:04.37\00:29:07.11 with their sacrifices. 00:29:07.14\00:29:09.11 You'd bring, now there are also other offerings. 00:29:09.14\00:29:11.21 There were the peace offerings and thank offerings. 00:29:11.25\00:29:13.21 But when you would bring a sin offering, 00:29:13.25\00:29:14.58 a trespass offering, 00:29:14.62\00:29:15.95 the sinner would be directed by the priest 00:29:15.98\00:29:18.29 to put their hands on the head of the animal 00:29:18.32\00:29:20.39 and actually bear down with their body weight 00:29:20.42\00:29:23.46 on to the animal and confess their sins. 00:29:23.49\00:29:27.03 And this was figurative of transferring the sin 00:29:27.03\00:29:30.50 from yourself the sinner to the innocent victim 00:29:30.57\00:29:34.77 which represented Christ. 00:29:34.80\00:29:36.71 He was taking your sin 00:29:36.74\00:29:39.01 and this is what it was trying to impress. 00:29:39.04\00:29:40.48 Now what would happen is 00:29:40.51\00:29:41.84 the sinner would confess the sin 00:29:41.88\00:29:43.21 and then the priest would give the sinner the knife 00:29:43.24\00:29:45.61 and then the sinner had to cut the throat 00:29:45.65\00:29:48.35 of the sacrificial animal and take its life 00:29:48.38\00:29:51.62 because it's your sin that cost the life of that victim. 00:29:51.65\00:29:55.69 You understand? 00:29:55.72\00:29:57.06 That was the imagery that was being conveyed. 00:29:57.13\00:29:59.79 Now what would happen next was interesting. 00:29:59.83\00:30:02.00 You as a sinner who came to the sanctuary, 00:30:02.03\00:30:04.87 you would go away forgiven. 00:30:04.90\00:30:07.90 You would go away with the burden of that sin gone 00:30:07.94\00:30:10.67 because you had confessed it on the lamb. 00:30:10.71\00:30:14.31 But you knew at the same time, and don't miss this, 00:30:14.34\00:30:17.05 you knew at the same time that the work wasn't done yet 00:30:17.11\00:30:20.92 because the priest then would take the blood 00:30:20.95\00:30:24.82 and sometimes the flesh of that victim 00:30:24.85\00:30:26.32 and take it into the sanctuary in figure, 00:30:26.35\00:30:30.89 and don't miss that term in figure 00:30:30.93\00:30:32.99 transferring your sin to the sanctuary. 00:30:33.03\00:30:34.83 The sanctuary became this kind of holding place 00:30:34.83\00:30:37.83 for the sins of the people. 00:30:37.87\00:30:40.07 And what it was conveying was this, 00:30:40.10\00:30:42.30 in real practical terms: 00:30:42.34\00:30:45.27 When you confess your sin and accept Jesus, 00:30:45.31\00:30:48.31 let's say, I get into a fight with my wife 00:30:48.34\00:30:50.68 and I say some mean words, 00:30:50.71\00:30:52.25 and I confess those sins to Jesus, 00:30:52.28\00:30:55.68 that doesn't guarantee that I'm not going to get 00:30:55.72\00:30:57.69 into a fight with my wife tonight. 00:30:57.72\00:30:59.82 You understand what I'm saying? 00:30:59.85\00:31:01.39 Although I wish that it would. 00:31:01.42\00:31:02.79 Although I wish that because I confessed my sins 00:31:02.82\00:31:05.09 once to Jesus 00:31:05.13\00:31:06.46 that I would never say the wrong thing again 00:31:06.49\00:31:08.26 or do the wrong thing or lose my temper. 00:31:08.30\00:31:09.83 You understand what I'm saying? 00:31:09.86\00:31:11.80 And so I could go away forgiven. 00:31:11.83\00:31:15.80 But I knew there was still work yet for the priest to do. 00:31:15.84\00:31:19.87 And that was that second apartment work, 00:31:19.91\00:31:22.01 that's what... 00:31:22.04\00:31:23.41 When a worshipper would come 00:31:23.45\00:31:24.78 and they would confess their sin 00:31:24.81\00:31:26.15 and offer that lamb, or whatever that animal was, 00:31:26.18\00:31:28.58 and they go away forgiven. 00:31:28.62\00:31:30.95 They would look forward to that Day of Atonement 00:31:30.99\00:31:33.56 because on the Day of Atonement that was the day 00:31:33.62\00:31:36.69 where the sin was cleansed. 00:31:36.73\00:31:40.50 And it was communicating to the worshipper 00:31:40.56\00:31:43.93 that Jesus will not only forgive your sin 00:31:44.00\00:31:46.97 but He is going to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. 00:31:47.00\00:31:50.54 That's where John gets that from in 1 John 1:9, 00:31:50.57\00:31:53.17 if we confess our sins, 00:31:53.21\00:31:54.54 He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins 00:31:54.58\00:31:56.34 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 00:31:56.38\00:31:59.11 And so the hope in the heart of the sinner was 00:31:59.15\00:32:01.35 that cleansing that would come down the line. 00:32:01.38\00:32:04.49 Not to say that the forgiveness, 00:32:04.52\00:32:05.85 of course, there's the joy of sins forgiven, 00:32:05.89\00:32:07.56 but inherent in that was looking forward 00:32:07.59\00:32:10.03 to that other phase of ministry 00:32:10.06\00:32:12.96 that was outlined in the sanctuary. 00:32:12.99\00:32:14.63 These two apartments 00:32:14.66\00:32:16.93 and these two aspects of ministry 00:32:16.97\00:32:19.00 made up the services of the sanctuary. 00:32:19.03\00:32:20.64 Now, the Apostle Paul, 00:32:20.70\00:32:22.04 this is what he is reminding his reader of there 00:32:22.07\00:32:24.77 in Hebrews 9, 00:32:24.81\00:32:26.84 and then he connects his point in verse 8. 00:32:26.88\00:32:30.05 Look at verse 8. 00:32:30.11\00:32:32.31 Hebrews 9:8. 00:32:32.35\00:32:34.55 Bible says here, 00:32:34.58\00:32:38.49 "The Holy Spirit indicating this." 00:32:38.52\00:32:41.62 In other words, this earthly service, 00:32:41.66\00:32:44.39 the Holy Spirit had set this whole thing up. 00:32:44.43\00:32:46.76 He gave the pattern and everything else 00:32:46.80\00:32:48.43 because he was trying to teach this lesson. 00:32:48.46\00:32:50.80 The Holy Spirit indicating this that the way into the... 00:32:50.83\00:32:55.80 Now my Bible says holiest of all. 00:32:55.84\00:32:58.27 You know what the original Greek says? 00:32:58.31\00:33:00.41 Holy places. Doesn't say holiest of all. 00:33:00.48\00:33:02.48 This is what I meant earlier, people get all tripped up like, 00:33:02.51\00:33:04.48 "Hey, this is in the most holy..." 00:33:04.51\00:33:05.85 That's not what he's talking about the most holy place. 00:33:05.88\00:33:08.82 And you'll see that in a minute. 00:33:08.85\00:33:10.39 It's not, that the original says, 00:33:10.42\00:33:12.05 and some of your translations will have it this way 00:33:12.09\00:33:13.66 like the New American Standard of the ESV that 00:33:13.69\00:33:16.12 "The way into the holy places 00:33:16.16\00:33:18.93 or the sanctuary was not yet made manifest 00:33:18.96\00:33:22.13 while the first tabernacle," not the first apartment, 00:33:22.16\00:33:26.33 "While the first tabernacle was still standing. 00:33:26.37\00:33:30.27 Paul's telling us that the Holy Spirit was 00:33:30.31\00:33:32.81 trying to teach this lesson that the way 00:33:32.84\00:33:35.34 into the heavenly sanctuary was not clear 00:33:35.38\00:33:38.15 while the first tabernacle was still standing, 00:33:38.18\00:33:39.98 the Holy Spirit was using it as a teaching tool. 00:33:40.02\00:33:42.88 He was indicating this 00:33:42.92\00:33:44.49 that there was a heavenly sanctuary 00:33:44.52\00:33:46.42 that was going to fulfill the reality. 00:33:46.45\00:33:48.39 This is what he says in the next verse, in verse 9. 00:33:48.42\00:33:52.56 Its speaking 00:33:52.59\00:33:53.96 of the earthly temple was symbolic. 00:33:54.00\00:33:58.73 Some of your Bibles use the word, a figure. 00:33:58.77\00:34:02.40 The Greek word here is interesting, 00:34:02.44\00:34:04.31 it's the word parabole. 00:34:04.34\00:34:06.54 I'll give you one guess 00:34:06.57\00:34:07.91 how the New Testament usually translates that word, 00:34:07.94\00:34:11.35 it's parable. 00:34:11.38\00:34:12.95 And that's the word Paul chose to talk about 00:34:12.98\00:34:14.82 this earthly to say this, 00:34:14.85\00:34:16.18 "The Holy Spirit was trying to teach a lesson 00:34:16.22\00:34:17.85 and that earthly sanctuary was a parable 00:34:17.89\00:34:21.32 and what happened in the earthly sanctuary 00:34:21.36\00:34:22.92 was a parable. 00:34:22.96\00:34:25.13 For the present time in which both gifts 00:34:25.16\00:34:27.40 and sacrifices are offered 00:34:27.40\00:34:29.30 which cannot make him to perform the service perfect 00:34:29.33\00:34:32.70 in regard to the conscience concerned 00:34:32.73\00:34:34.74 with only foods and drinks, various washings 00:34:34.77\00:34:37.67 and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. 00:34:37.71\00:34:43.71 So Paul says, this whole earthly system 00:34:43.75\00:34:45.71 we're talking type and anti-type was 00:34:45.75\00:34:47.95 pointing forward to a greater reality 00:34:47.98\00:34:50.65 and he interjects there that one of the big problems is 00:34:50.69\00:34:53.52 that this couldn't cleanse the people. 00:34:53.56\00:34:55.82 Blood of bulls and goats doesn't cleanse people, 00:34:55.86\00:34:58.23 doesn't take away sin. 00:34:58.26\00:35:00.33 And so our hope shouldn't be in that, 00:35:00.36\00:35:02.26 our hope should be in and that's what Paul is saying, 00:35:02.30\00:35:04.17 in something greater to come 00:35:04.20\00:35:06.17 and he tells us what that greater is 00:35:06.20\00:35:07.94 if you keep reading in verse 11. 00:35:07.97\00:35:10.81 He contrasts the earthly, 00:35:10.84\00:35:12.34 the Holy Spirit is pointing the way to the heavenly, 00:35:12.37\00:35:14.58 and he says in verse 11, 00:35:14.61\00:35:15.94 "But Christ came as high priest of the good things to come. 00:35:15.98\00:35:21.65 With a greater and more perfect" what? 00:35:21.68\00:35:25.59 "Tabernacle not made with hands, 00:35:25.62\00:35:28.29 that is not of this creation, 00:35:28.32\00:35:29.92 not with the blood of goats and calves, 00:35:29.96\00:35:33.09 but with his own blood he entered the..." 00:35:33.13\00:35:37.37 My Bible says, "Most holy place." 00:35:37.43\00:35:38.93 What do you think the Hebrews, the Greek says here? 00:35:38.97\00:35:41.10 Holy places. 00:35:41.14\00:35:44.01 The point that the apostle is trying to make is 00:35:44.07\00:35:46.64 what the earthly couldn't do and was never intended to do, 00:35:46.68\00:35:49.24 that's what the heavenly does. 00:35:49.28\00:35:50.71 What the earthly priest could not accomplish, 00:35:50.75\00:35:52.98 the heavenly high priest, Jesus Christ, can accomplish. 00:35:53.01\00:35:56.48 What the earthly sacrifices couldn't do, 00:35:56.52\00:35:58.49 the heavenly does do, then and then some. 00:35:58.52\00:36:02.66 And so his whole point here in this passage is 00:36:02.69\00:36:06.23 comparing the type and the anti-type 00:36:06.26\00:36:08.26 and helping trying to help his readers 00:36:08.30\00:36:10.30 to fix their hope on the heavenly high priest 00:36:10.37\00:36:14.84 and the heavenly sanctuary. 00:36:14.87\00:36:16.44 And the work of Jesus that he has accomplished 00:36:16.47\00:36:20.18 and continues to do by virtue of his own sacrifice. 00:36:20.21\00:36:26.65 He's entered with his own blood into the holy places 00:36:26.72\00:36:30.99 having obtained eternal redemption. 00:36:31.02\00:36:34.26 And I want to keep reading, there's some more, 00:36:34.29\00:36:36.73 much more there but you get the gist 00:36:36.76\00:36:38.36 of the type and anti-type, 00:36:38.39\00:36:40.40 and I want to move into our third area 00:36:40.43\00:36:42.00 and that is Christology because Paul just did it. 00:36:42.03\00:36:46.50 In other words, 00:36:46.53\00:36:47.87 here's the heart of what we're talking about 00:36:47.90\00:36:49.80 and we're talking about the heavenly sanctuary. 00:36:49.84\00:36:51.81 Folks, there's a lot of people today 00:36:51.84\00:36:53.17 that talk a lot about Jesus. 00:36:53.21\00:36:55.08 Oh, when you talk about Jesus, when you focus on Jesus, 00:36:55.11\00:36:57.41 when you talk about what Jesus is doing and yet... 00:36:57.45\00:37:02.62 Rarely, if ever do you hear any talk of 00:37:02.65\00:37:05.15 where Jesus actually is according to scripture, 00:37:05.19\00:37:08.26 and what He's actually doing according to scripture. 00:37:08.29\00:37:12.59 Like let's talk about Jesus but let's not talk about 00:37:12.63\00:37:14.76 where He is and what He is doing. 00:37:14.83\00:37:16.30 The Bible says, He is in at this moment 00:37:16.33\00:37:19.03 that we're sitting here now 00:37:19.07\00:37:20.44 He is in the temple in heaven mediating 00:37:20.47\00:37:23.27 for His people to obtain that eternal redemption. 00:37:23.30\00:37:27.38 And I'm going to talk about the significance of that 00:37:27.41\00:37:29.31 a little bit more as we go 00:37:29.34\00:37:30.68 but when we come to talking about Christology, 00:37:30.75\00:37:34.25 when we are talking about the sanctuary, 00:37:34.32\00:37:35.65 talking about the very center of Christ's work 00:37:35.68\00:37:39.15 not 2000 years ago, folks, we don't have crucifixes 00:37:39.19\00:37:43.73 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:37:43.76\00:37:45.46 because Christ isn't on the cross anymore. 00:37:45.49\00:37:47.96 He came off the cross. 00:37:47.96\00:37:49.36 He's not in Joseph's new tomb anymore. 00:37:49.40\00:37:51.37 He's risen from the grave, 00:37:51.40\00:37:52.73 He's ascended to be our high priest, 00:37:52.77\00:37:54.30 whoever lives to make intercession for His people. 00:37:54.34\00:37:57.57 And so the hope... 00:37:57.61\00:37:58.94 God wants the hope of His people directed 00:37:58.97\00:38:00.71 to where Jesus is now. 00:38:00.74\00:38:03.58 And it's hard to be Christ centered 00:38:03.61\00:38:05.98 when you exclude the place, the very place of His work, 00:38:06.01\00:38:09.78 the heavenly sanctuary. 00:38:09.82\00:38:11.39 Now I'm not going to go back to Hebrews 8. 00:38:11.42\00:38:13.09 But we just read it in Hebrews 8:4, 00:38:13.12\00:38:15.26 the Apostle Paul said, if Jesus were on earth, 00:38:15.29\00:38:18.06 He could not be a priest. 00:38:18.09\00:38:21.03 Because he said there are priests 00:38:21.06\00:38:22.60 who offer gifts according to the law. 00:38:22.63\00:38:23.97 Now, if you spend a little bit more time reading Hebrew 7, 8. 00:38:24.00\00:38:27.04 You'll find that his point is this: 00:38:27.07\00:38:29.00 The priests had to be from the tribe of Levi. 00:38:29.04\00:38:33.78 What tribe is Jesus from? Judah. 00:38:33.81\00:38:36.85 And Paul simply makes the point, 00:38:36.88\00:38:38.61 that's why he goes into the idea of Jesus 00:38:38.65\00:38:40.12 being after the order of Melchizedek 00:38:40.15\00:38:42.28 to qualify as priesthood, 00:38:42.32\00:38:43.69 but he said if He was on the earth, 00:38:43.72\00:38:45.05 He couldn't be a priest 00:38:45.09\00:38:46.42 because He wasn't from the right tribe. 00:38:46.45\00:38:48.29 Now you've got to put a couple of things together. 00:38:48.32\00:38:51.49 First of all, He's from the wrong tribe 00:38:51.53\00:38:52.86 to be a priest on the earth, so His priestly ministry 00:38:52.89\00:38:55.16 couldn't have been on the earth. 00:38:55.20\00:38:56.53 I have Christians who tell me, 00:38:56.56\00:38:57.90 "Well, Jesus did His priestly work on the earth?" 00:38:57.93\00:38:59.27 No, He didn't. No, He didn't. 00:38:59.30\00:39:01.34 Because the Bible is clear if He were on earth, 00:39:01.37\00:39:03.10 He could not be a priest. 00:39:03.14\00:39:05.44 There was another big problem 00:39:05.47\00:39:06.84 with doing His priestly work while He was on the earth. 00:39:06.91\00:39:09.54 He didn't have a sacrifice yet. 00:39:09.58\00:39:12.01 He had to go to the cross before He could be a priest. 00:39:12.05\00:39:14.72 It was by virtue of that sacrifice. 00:39:14.75\00:39:17.79 And so the scripture limits the priestly work of Christ 00:39:17.82\00:39:21.19 to the sanctuary in heaven. 00:39:21.22\00:39:22.56 I want you to see something here, 00:39:22.59\00:39:23.96 I'm in Hebrew still, we're in Hebrews 3. 00:39:23.99\00:39:25.49 Hebrews 3. 00:39:30.47\00:39:31.90 We're just going to look at the first verse here. 00:39:31.93\00:39:34.14 And I want you to... 00:39:34.17\00:39:37.04 Consider it. 00:39:37.11\00:39:38.44 Yes, it's a little play on word, 00:39:38.47\00:39:40.31 you'll see in just a moment, Hebrews 3:1, 00:39:40.38\00:39:43.04 the Apostle says, "Therefore, holy brethren, 00:39:43.08\00:39:44.71 partakers of the heavenly calling." 00:39:44.75\00:39:48.22 What's the next word? 00:39:48.25\00:39:50.12 "Consider the apostle 00:39:50.19\00:39:51.82 and high priest of our confession, 00:39:51.85\00:39:53.76 Christ Jesus." 00:39:53.79\00:39:55.72 Now notice what he said there. First of all consider. 00:39:55.76\00:39:58.59 This is not a... 00:39:58.63\00:40:00.30 Consider is not a word like hey, consider the red barn 00:40:00.33\00:40:03.43 you just passed on the road." 00:40:03.47\00:40:05.33 This is not a passing thought. 00:40:05.37\00:40:07.64 The idea implied here 00:40:07.67\00:40:09.00 is something you're going to think about 00:40:09.04\00:40:10.61 and meditate on. 00:40:10.67\00:40:12.44 And Paul says, he wants us to meditate on Jesus 00:40:12.47\00:40:14.98 in two roles, 00:40:15.01\00:40:16.71 one as the apostle of our confession, 00:40:16.75\00:40:20.92 and the other as the what? 00:40:20.95\00:40:23.05 High priest. 00:40:23.08\00:40:24.42 Now, that may confuse you a little bit 00:40:24.45\00:40:25.79 if you haven't heard this term used with Jesus 00:40:25.82\00:40:27.42 before, hadn't thought about it. 00:40:27.46\00:40:28.79 An apostle literally means one who is sent. Okay. 00:40:28.82\00:40:31.53 And so what Paul saying is, consider Jesus as the one 00:40:31.56\00:40:34.13 who was sent to this earth from His Father 00:40:34.20\00:40:37.03 to live a perfect life, to take our sins, 00:40:37.10\00:40:39.37 to die on Calvary's Cross, to rise again, right? 00:40:39.40\00:40:41.70 Consider Him as the apostle. 00:40:41.74\00:40:43.84 Listen, folks, the life, the death, the burial, 00:40:43.87\00:40:47.21 the resurrection of Jesus is the foundation 00:40:47.24\00:40:49.58 of the Christian faith. 00:40:49.61\00:40:51.51 It is the foundation of our faith 00:40:51.55\00:40:53.35 and it's been said by one author 00:40:53.38\00:40:55.58 that to remove the cross from the Christian 00:40:55.62\00:40:59.85 would be like blotting the sun from the sky. 00:40:59.89\00:41:02.96 Okay. 00:41:02.99\00:41:04.33 So the Apostle Paul says, I want you to consider Him, 00:41:04.36\00:41:07.40 His life, His death, His resurrection. 00:41:07.40\00:41:10.73 I want you to consider Him as the apostle. 00:41:10.77\00:41:13.54 But any Hebrew knew that to consider Him 00:41:13.60\00:41:20.24 as the sacrifice, 00:41:20.28\00:41:21.74 to consider Him on the cross included considering Him 00:41:21.78\00:41:25.51 as the high priest. 00:41:25.55\00:41:27.12 The sanctuary service was not completed 00:41:27.18\00:41:29.38 with the sacrifice alone. 00:41:29.42\00:41:31.12 They knew that, and the apostle knew that 00:41:31.15\00:41:32.75 and so he says, look, I want you to consider 00:41:32.79\00:41:34.39 not only Jesus as the apostle of our faith, 00:41:34.42\00:41:38.63 but I want you to consider Him as the high priest. 00:41:38.66\00:41:43.40 There are a lot of Christians who are not thinking through 00:41:43.43\00:41:46.80 what it means to have Jesus as the high priest. 00:41:46.87\00:41:50.91 Now, one thing that Paul tied in here 00:41:55.74\00:42:00.22 in the beginning of Hebrews 9 00:42:00.25\00:42:04.69 that we looked at briefly, I'm going to read it again. 00:42:04.72\00:42:06.89 Chapter 9:1 says, then indeed, even the first covenant, 00:42:06.96\00:42:12.03 what's another word for that? 00:42:12.06\00:42:14.20 First covenant. Old Covenant, right? 00:42:14.20\00:42:18.77 Don't miss this, even the first covenant 00:42:18.80\00:42:21.10 or the old covenant had ordinances of divine service 00:42:21.14\00:42:24.17 and the earthly sanctuary. 00:42:24.21\00:42:27.58 What's he trying to say? 00:42:27.61\00:42:29.11 He's making the point that the covenants are 00:42:29.14\00:42:33.11 both associated with sanctuaries. 00:42:33.15\00:42:36.52 The old covenant is associated with the earthly sanctuary 00:42:36.55\00:42:40.62 and the new covenant is associated 00:42:40.66\00:42:42.79 with the heavenly sanctuary, 00:42:42.82\00:42:44.96 yet how many new covenant Christians, 00:42:44.99\00:42:47.13 I mean, how know nothing about the heavenly sanctuary. 00:42:47.20\00:42:50.40 Okay. The scripture is full of these kinds of things, why? 00:42:50.43\00:42:53.87 Because this is the focal point, 00:42:53.90\00:42:55.54 the center of Christ's work, 00:42:55.57\00:42:56.97 and the Lord wants to direct our minds 00:42:57.04\00:42:58.87 and our attention to what Jesus is doing for us 00:42:58.91\00:43:02.31 as our great high priest. 00:43:02.34\00:43:05.08 Now, there's a lot that could be said, 00:43:05.11\00:43:07.22 but what I want to highlight is I want to draw, 00:43:07.25\00:43:09.38 connect some dots, 00:43:09.42\00:43:10.79 when we looked at the earthly service 00:43:10.82\00:43:12.15 and we talked about that two apartment ministry, 00:43:12.19\00:43:16.26 the holy place and the most holy place. 00:43:16.29\00:43:18.29 The daily service and the yearly service 00:43:18.33\00:43:20.30 called the Day of Atonement, 00:43:20.33\00:43:23.53 all of those were pointing forward to the reality 00:43:23.57\00:43:26.07 that Jesus' ministry also includes two phases. 00:43:26.10\00:43:30.91 One dealing primarily with forgiveness 00:43:30.94\00:43:33.74 but Jesus is not stopping short at forgiveness. 00:43:33.78\00:43:37.55 Jesus has promised to cleanse us from sin. 00:43:37.61\00:43:41.75 A key part of the priestly work of Christ 00:43:41.78\00:43:46.05 is to cleanse His people from their sin. 00:43:46.09\00:43:49.52 He's not going to save us only from the penalty of sin, 00:43:49.56\00:43:52.99 He promises to save us from the power of sin 00:43:53.03\00:43:56.13 and this is sadly lacking in Christianity today. 00:43:56.16\00:44:00.44 So much so, I'm going to tell you, I read this, 00:44:00.47\00:44:02.87 this doesn't have to do with some Christian book 00:44:02.90\00:44:04.74 or something I was reading, 00:44:04.77\00:44:06.11 but I read, how many of you know the name Robin Williams. 00:44:06.14\00:44:09.11 He was a comedian who committed suicide in 2014. 00:44:09.14\00:44:15.28 And when he committed suicide, 00:44:15.32\00:44:16.89 I read this article in MSNBC News. 00:44:16.92\00:44:22.82 Now, Robin Williams had suffered with alcoholism. 00:44:22.86\00:44:26.53 And he had tried, and he had tried, 00:44:26.56\00:44:28.06 and he'd not been able to shake it. 00:44:28.10\00:44:29.90 It ruined the marriage of his and it made his life miserable. 00:44:29.93\00:44:33.60 And this is what he said in an interview 00:44:33.64\00:44:36.14 that they quoted from 00:44:36.17\00:44:38.14 in this MSNBC News article of August 12, 2014. 00:44:38.17\00:44:41.91 This was Robin Williams talking about his alcoholism, 00:44:41.94\00:44:44.45 his addiction and he said, you know, I was shameful 00:44:44.48\00:44:50.55 and you do stuff that causes disgust 00:44:50.59\00:44:54.76 and that's hard to recover from. 00:44:54.79\00:44:57.13 You ever do something that just you loathe your sin 00:44:57.19\00:45:01.36 from the sin that's within you as Paul says. 00:45:01.40\00:45:03.77 You say something or you do thing, 00:45:03.80\00:45:05.70 you act a certain way 00:45:05.73\00:45:07.07 and you long for something different, 00:45:07.14\00:45:10.01 you want transformation in your life. 00:45:10.04\00:45:11.71 You wished you weren't so selfish 00:45:11.74\00:45:13.17 or self-centered or whatever else it is. 00:45:13.21\00:45:18.55 How many of you know what I'm talking about? 00:45:18.58\00:45:21.48 And you long for that transforming power, 00:45:21.52\00:45:24.49 you want release, you want victory. 00:45:24.52\00:45:26.35 Now this is what he says. 00:45:26.39\00:45:28.59 You do stuff that causes disgust 00:45:28.62\00:45:29.96 and that's hard to recover from. 00:45:30.03\00:45:32.79 You can say, I forgive you 00:45:32.83\00:45:34.56 and all that stuff 00:45:34.60\00:45:36.83 but it's not the same as recovering from it. 00:45:36.87\00:45:40.50 Folks listen to me. 00:45:40.54\00:45:42.70 A lot of people are selling Christianity today as simply, 00:45:42.74\00:45:47.04 "Hey, God forgives you." 00:45:47.08\00:45:49.28 You know that works if you don't hate your sin. 00:45:49.31\00:45:53.01 That works if sin is fashionable for you. 00:45:53.05\00:45:55.82 But if you long to be delivered from sin, 00:45:55.85\00:45:58.09 forgiveness is good, but you want cleansing. 00:45:58.12\00:46:00.89 Here's a man who took his own life 00:46:00.92\00:46:02.56 and I think to myself God forbid, 00:46:02.59\00:46:04.26 he may have been a victim of modern Christianity 00:46:04.29\00:46:09.36 where you got Christians who act no different 00:46:09.40\00:46:11.87 from the world around us. 00:46:11.90\00:46:13.77 You're just as likely to get that your number one sign 00:46:13.84\00:46:16.37 when you're driving from a Christian is 00:46:16.40\00:46:17.77 from somebody else, right? 00:46:17.81\00:46:20.21 You're just as likely, 00:46:20.28\00:46:21.61 we got a divorce rate just like the world does. 00:46:21.64\00:46:25.11 We're no different 00:46:25.15\00:46:26.48 and then we say cute little things like, 00:46:26.51\00:46:28.25 "Well, Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven." 00:46:28.28\00:46:29.98 What does that mean? 00:46:30.02\00:46:32.09 Hey, praise the Lord for forgiveness. 00:46:32.12\00:46:34.82 But Jesus promised more. 00:46:34.86\00:46:37.23 He's going to save to the uttermost all 00:46:37.26\00:46:39.79 who come to God through Him. 00:46:39.83\00:46:41.63 That heavenly sanctuary was intended 00:46:41.66\00:46:43.53 to draw the minds of humanity to the fact 00:46:43.57\00:46:46.33 that we have a priest, an advocate right now 00:46:46.37\00:46:50.27 who is working for our success in the Christian life. 00:46:50.31\00:46:53.64 Look what Paul says in Hebrews 9, 00:47:00.68\00:47:02.58 I'm starting in verse 23. 00:47:02.62\00:47:04.42 He's contrasting again and he says in Hebrews 9:23, 00:47:10.59\00:47:13.26 "Therefore, it was necessary 00:47:13.29\00:47:15.03 that the copies of the things in the heavens 00:47:15.06\00:47:18.57 should be purified with these..." 00:47:18.60\00:47:21.77 Speaking of earthly animal sacrifices. 00:47:21.80\00:47:23.61 "But the heavenly things themselves 00:47:23.64\00:47:25.54 with better sacrifices than these, 00:47:25.57\00:47:27.28 for Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands 00:47:27.31\00:47:31.15 which are copies of the true but into heaven itself 00:47:31.18\00:47:34.72 now to appear in the presence of God for us." 00:47:34.75\00:47:37.95 So he's again just drawing out 00:47:37.99\00:47:39.69 that Jesus is into the presence of His father 00:47:39.72\00:47:44.16 on behalf of His people, 00:47:44.23\00:47:45.56 that's what the priest did in the earthly sanctuary. 00:47:45.59\00:47:47.30 He was a representative of the people. 00:47:47.30\00:47:51.27 When the priest would come before God, 00:47:51.30\00:47:53.13 God saw in the priest the rest of His people. 00:47:53.17\00:47:58.57 I think God that Jesus is the one in the presence of God 00:47:58.61\00:48:01.34 and when He sees Jesus, 00:48:01.38\00:48:02.71 He sees everybody who depends on Jesus. 00:48:02.74\00:48:04.11 You look just like Him. 00:48:04.18\00:48:06.08 He's standing there in the presence of His Father. 00:48:06.11\00:48:08.18 This is what the Apostle's saying, 00:48:08.22\00:48:09.55 appearing in the presence of God for us on our behalf. 00:48:09.58\00:48:13.69 Verse 25, "Not that He should offer Himself often 00:48:13.72\00:48:16.56 as a high priest enters the most holy place, 00:48:16.59\00:48:19.43 literally the holy places again, 00:48:19.46\00:48:22.03 every year with the blood of another. 00:48:22.06\00:48:24.27 He then would have had to suffer often 00:48:24.30\00:48:26.03 since the foundation of the world, 00:48:26.07\00:48:27.44 but now, once at the end of the ages." 00:48:27.47\00:48:29.90 Don't miss a language here. 00:48:29.94\00:48:31.77 Speaking of Christ as our Heavenly High Priest. 00:48:31.81\00:48:35.21 "Now once at the end of the ages, 00:48:35.24\00:48:36.58 He has appeared to do" what? 00:48:36.61\00:48:39.95 "Put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself." 00:48:40.02\00:48:45.42 Folks, the reason Jesus hasn't come back yet. 00:48:45.45\00:48:48.59 I've asked Christian friends like, 00:48:48.62\00:48:49.96 so what's Jesus doing, 00:48:50.03\00:48:51.36 "Oh yeah, it was all done back at the cross and he's been... 00:48:51.39\00:48:53.60 What? 00:48:53.63\00:48:54.93 Is He playing checkers with His Father up there 00:48:54.96\00:48:56.46 or something, I mean what? 00:48:56.50\00:48:57.83 You don't know, look folks, 00:48:57.87\00:48:59.30 and I'm not trying to be facetious here, 00:48:59.33\00:49:00.97 I'm saying the Bible tells us what Jesus is doing. 00:49:01.00\00:49:05.71 He is in the work of putting away sin. 00:49:05.74\00:49:07.94 While He could force it, but He actually can't force it. 00:49:07.98\00:49:10.88 He can't force us to be obedient to God. 00:49:10.91\00:49:13.48 It's got to be your choice so He works with us 00:49:13.55\00:49:15.42 as our high priest, 00:49:15.45\00:49:16.82 helping us to learn how to trust in Him completely. 00:49:16.85\00:49:20.99 He had manifested Himself. 00:49:21.02\00:49:22.52 He appeared, the Bible says, 00:49:22.56\00:49:23.89 he is talking about His earthly ministry 00:49:23.96\00:49:25.29 to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 00:49:25.33\00:49:29.00 Do you think He can do it? Yes. 00:49:29.03\00:49:31.13 Folks, I'm gonna tell you, that's where our hope is. 00:49:31.17\00:49:33.27 There's not going to be any sin in the new earth. 00:49:33.34\00:49:35.44 Sin is going to be gone. Sin is going to be gone. 00:49:35.47\00:49:37.97 There's not going to be no more 00:49:38.01\00:49:39.34 that plaguing of the sinful nature. 00:49:39.37\00:49:40.71 There's no more the traces of the curse. 00:49:40.78\00:49:42.61 He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself, 00:49:46.11\00:49:49.32 verse 27, and as it is appointed for men 00:49:49.35\00:49:52.22 to die once but after this the Judgment, 00:49:52.25\00:49:54.16 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many 00:49:54.19\00:49:57.43 to those who eagerly wait for Him, 00:49:57.46\00:50:00.70 He will appear a second time, notice the language, 00:50:00.73\00:50:03.73 apart from sin unto salvation. 00:50:03.77\00:50:08.00 Anybody have a different reading? 00:50:08.04\00:50:09.87 There's some Bible that say it this way, 00:50:09.90\00:50:11.67 without reference to sin. 00:50:11.71\00:50:14.18 Not to deal with sin. 00:50:14.24\00:50:15.78 Now, I don't want you to miss this. 00:50:15.81\00:50:17.51 The point the apostle is making is this, 00:50:17.55\00:50:18.95 Jesus came once to put away sin. 00:50:18.98\00:50:21.38 He sacrificed Himself on the cross. 00:50:21.42\00:50:23.59 By virtue of that sacrifice, 00:50:23.65\00:50:24.99 He went to the sanctuary in heaven. 00:50:25.02\00:50:26.35 Right now, He works on our behalf 00:50:26.39\00:50:27.72 to put away sin out of this entire universe. 00:50:27.76\00:50:29.32 Out of your life, and my life, and out of the universe. 00:50:29.36\00:50:32.59 When He comes again, 00:50:32.63\00:50:34.40 He is not coming to deal with sin. 00:50:34.46\00:50:37.00 He will have done that. 00:50:37.03\00:50:38.37 He is not coming back according to scripture as a priest. 00:50:38.40\00:50:42.07 He is coming back as the King of kings 00:50:42.10\00:50:43.74 and Lord of lords. 00:50:43.77\00:50:45.11 And the King deals with the execution of judgment. 00:50:45.14\00:50:46.81 Now is the time that we have a high priest. 00:50:46.84\00:50:51.21 In the presence of the Father in heaven, 00:50:51.25\00:50:53.75 who will save you and me to the uttermost. 00:50:53.78\00:50:59.22 Are you availing yourself of the grace of Christ? 00:50:59.25\00:51:04.46 I don't know what you struggle with, 00:51:04.49\00:51:06.49 but I'm going to tell you there's nothing you struggle 00:51:06.53\00:51:08.26 with that is greater than the power of Christ 00:51:08.30\00:51:09.76 to save you from it. 00:51:09.80\00:51:11.13 Amen. 00:51:11.17\00:51:12.50 I tell you it makes me think of... 00:51:12.53\00:51:15.84 You know saints. 00:51:15.87\00:51:19.21 I want you to look at one of the passage in Hebrews 6. 00:51:19.24\00:51:22.74 Hebrews 6:19 and 20. Hebrews 6:19 and 20. 00:51:22.78\00:51:30.55 The Bible says here, 00:51:30.59\00:51:32.69 "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul 00:51:32.72\00:51:37.96 both sure and steadfast..." 00:51:37.99\00:51:40.26 I mean, look at all those words that give us confidence, 00:51:40.30\00:51:43.03 this hope we have, 00:51:43.06\00:51:44.40 this hope of Jesus as our high priest. 00:51:44.43\00:51:46.67 "Both sure and steadfast, 00:51:46.70\00:51:48.14 and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 00:51:48.17\00:51:50.94 where the forerunner has entered for us, 00:51:50.97\00:51:52.84 even Jesus having become High Priest forever 00:51:52.87\00:51:55.48 according to the order of Melchizedek. 00:51:55.51\00:51:58.65 God wants us to have hope in Christ, 00:51:58.68\00:52:01.45 wants our eyes to be directed to Christ, 00:52:01.48\00:52:04.09 and what He is doing now for you and me, 00:52:04.12\00:52:06.89 and we should have no misgivings 00:52:06.96\00:52:08.52 that Jesus won't be able to finish the work 00:52:08.56\00:52:10.43 He started in us. 00:52:10.46\00:52:12.59 It reminds me of one of my favorite stories 00:52:12.63\00:52:14.46 actually of a young man, he wasn't so young, 00:52:14.50\00:52:17.23 he'd actually had a failed marriage. 00:52:17.27\00:52:20.30 And it was really hard on him. 00:52:20.34\00:52:23.41 And after a period of, 00:52:23.47\00:52:25.11 you know, there was a period of time 00:52:25.14\00:52:26.47 where he just didn't feel like doing anything 00:52:26.51\00:52:27.84 and after some time he thought to himself, 00:52:27.88\00:52:29.54 you know, I need to shake this off, 00:52:29.58\00:52:30.91 I need to get on with my life, but one of the things 00:52:30.95\00:52:32.78 he always wanted to do was go on a cruise. 00:52:32.81\00:52:34.82 He thought it would be great to go on a cruise. 00:52:34.85\00:52:36.18 This would be fantastic 00:52:36.22\00:52:37.55 and maybe I can find the girl of my dreams on a cruise, 00:52:37.59\00:52:39.15 who knows. 00:52:39.19\00:52:40.52 I have some money in my savings account, 00:52:40.56\00:52:41.89 I'm going to go ahead, 00:52:41.92\00:52:43.26 I'm going to get that, I'm going to spend, 00:52:43.29\00:52:44.63 empty up my savings account and I'm going to buy a ticket. 00:52:44.66\00:52:47.20 That's just what he did. 00:52:47.23\00:52:49.13 In fact, he emptied out his account to the point... 00:52:49.16\00:52:51.33 Now, he wanted to have a little bitty, 00:52:51.37\00:52:52.70 he had a little bit of money left 00:52:52.73\00:52:54.07 where he could use for souvenirs 00:52:54.10\00:52:55.44 and what have you, 00:52:55.47\00:52:56.84 and so in order to save money he got this bright idea that, 00:52:56.87\00:52:59.87 you know, because he was sure that those elaborate meals 00:52:59.91\00:53:03.28 in the dining hall were going to be too expensive. 00:53:03.35\00:53:06.15 And if he would just skip that... 00:53:06.18\00:53:08.08 I mean, yeah, it was a sacrifice 00:53:08.12\00:53:10.02 but that way he can, you know, go on the cruise. 00:53:10.09\00:53:13.19 And so he decided 00:53:13.22\00:53:14.56 I'll take the easiest thing I can pack. 00:53:14.59\00:53:16.02 I'll take some peanut butter 00:53:16.06\00:53:17.43 and I'll take some crackers, okay. 00:53:17.46\00:53:18.96 Peanut butter keeps, 00:53:18.99\00:53:20.33 you don't have to have a refrigerator, crackers, 00:53:20.40\00:53:21.70 I mean, look it's not the greatest but I'll get by 00:53:21.73\00:53:24.13 and I'll have all the other enjoyment of the cruise. 00:53:24.17\00:53:27.30 And he wasn't disappointed. 00:53:27.34\00:53:28.67 I mean, he got out on this cruise 00:53:28.70\00:53:30.07 and it was beautiful. 00:53:30.11\00:53:31.44 I mean, the beautiful, the water was perfect, 00:53:31.47\00:53:33.11 beautiful sunshine every day, beautiful scenic places 00:53:33.14\00:53:36.51 and there was a lovely young lady 00:53:36.54\00:53:38.25 he met on that boat. 00:53:38.28\00:53:41.15 The second day that he struck up a conversation 00:53:41.18\00:53:45.15 and they seem to just hit it off so well. 00:53:45.19\00:53:48.22 And he met her one day, the next day, she said, 00:53:48.26\00:53:50.49 hey, let's eat dinner tonight in the dining hall. 00:53:50.53\00:53:54.10 Well, he thought to himself, 00:53:54.13\00:53:55.46 you know, I don't want to be embarrassing to tell her 00:53:55.50\00:53:57.83 I don't have the tickets. 00:53:57.87\00:53:59.33 So he put it off and he made an excuse. 00:53:59.37\00:54:03.14 Well, this happened every day 00:54:03.17\00:54:04.51 until the last day of the cruise, 00:54:04.54\00:54:05.87 well they've been really hitting it off, 00:54:05.91\00:54:07.28 and he thought something may come of this, 00:54:07.31\00:54:08.64 and I really need to tell her, and she asked again, 00:54:08.68\00:54:11.48 "This is the last day, 00:54:11.51\00:54:12.85 can't you eat with me in the dining hall." 00:54:12.88\00:54:14.45 And he said, "Well, here's the thing, 00:54:14.48\00:54:15.95 I spent all my money on the ticket 00:54:15.98\00:54:20.79 and I just didn't, I wanted to save some money 00:54:20.86\00:54:22.42 for souvenirs and stuff, 00:54:22.46\00:54:23.83 so I didn't get the meal ticket. 00:54:23.86\00:54:26.53 And she says, "Aha, that's what I love about you, 00:54:26.56\00:54:29.30 your sense of humor. 00:54:29.33\00:54:30.83 Silly, you know, the meals come with the ticket." 00:54:30.87\00:54:34.80 And this guy thought to himself, 00:54:40.44\00:54:43.04 "I have been eating peanut butter and crackers 00:54:43.08\00:54:45.05 in my room every day 00:54:45.08\00:54:47.18 and I could have been feasting with this beautiful lady 00:54:47.22\00:54:49.82 in a wonderful dining hall. 00:54:49.85\00:54:54.02 And brothers and sisters, I want to tell you something. 00:54:54.06\00:54:57.19 I fear that too many of us who name the name of Christ 00:54:57.23\00:55:00.93 to call ourselves Christians are living a peanut butter 00:55:00.96\00:55:03.47 and cracker Christianity, 00:55:03.50\00:55:06.77 because we don't focus on our Heavenly High Priest, 00:55:06.84\00:55:11.04 because we don't understand that Jesus is there, 00:55:11.07\00:55:14.08 and He has all power and all authority. 00:55:14.11\00:55:17.15 Not only for our own spiritual experience, 00:55:17.18\00:55:20.12 we're out sharing our faith with others 00:55:20.15\00:55:21.68 and we say, I don't know if I can say it right now. 00:55:21.72\00:55:23.79 How can I lead somebody? 00:55:23.82\00:55:25.15 Because you've got a heavenly high priest 00:55:25.19\00:55:26.52 who is going to put the words in your mouth. 00:55:26.55\00:55:29.16 When you're seeking victory in your own life, 00:55:29.19\00:55:32.23 you've got Jesus, Who is ministering for you. 00:55:32.26\00:55:36.87 Oh, and we're eating peanut butter 00:55:36.93\00:55:38.40 and crackers in the little room. 00:55:38.43\00:55:42.80 Again, I don't know 00:55:42.84\00:55:44.91 what struggles you came here with 00:55:44.94\00:55:46.34 but I know this. 00:55:46.37\00:55:47.98 Jesus Christ came to give you victory. 00:55:48.01\00:55:51.15 He has a place for you in His kingdom. 00:55:51.18\00:55:53.78 And right now, He ministers in your behalf. 00:55:53.82\00:55:56.45 And He wants you to look to Him and trust in Him 00:55:56.48\00:55:59.35 and they hold of His priestly ministry. 00:55:59.39\00:56:01.26 How many of you want to do that today? 00:56:01.29\00:56:02.62 Amen. Amen. 00:56:02.66\00:56:03.99 Let's pray together. 00:56:04.06\00:56:06.93 Father in heaven. 00:56:06.96\00:56:09.23 Oh, Father, Father forgive us for where we've fallen short. 00:56:09.26\00:56:13.54 Lord, sometimes we expect so little out of You 00:56:13.57\00:56:16.27 when You've promised us so much. 00:56:16.30\00:56:20.18 It's almost a mockery, Lord. 00:56:20.21\00:56:23.55 It makes it look like we don't think our God is 00:56:23.58\00:56:25.51 as great as we often say that He is. 00:56:25.55\00:56:28.62 So again, Father, forgive us. 00:56:28.65\00:56:31.29 Oh, direct our minds, direct our eyes, 00:56:31.32\00:56:34.26 redirect our eyes to Jesus, our Heavenly High Priest. 00:56:34.29\00:56:39.66 Lord, we're so grateful for the sacrifice on the cross. 00:56:39.69\00:56:43.26 And now by virtue of that sacrifice, 00:56:43.33\00:56:45.33 Jesus has ascended into heaven to work as our High Priest, 00:56:45.37\00:56:51.41 to give us victory, to cleanse us from sin, 00:56:51.44\00:56:53.94 to give us hope, bright hope for the future. 00:56:53.98\00:56:58.51 Oh, Father. 00:56:58.55\00:57:00.85 Father, you know the hearts of each one here. 00:57:00.88\00:57:02.72 You know what we have come here with. 00:57:02.75\00:57:04.55 There are people here today 00:57:04.59\00:57:09.09 who have been longing for release from some habit, 00:57:09.12\00:57:14.83 from some character trait, 00:57:14.83\00:57:16.33 from something that has just bogged them down. 00:57:16.36\00:57:21.17 Lord, perhaps... 00:57:21.20\00:57:25.81 Perhaps it's some besetting sin 00:57:25.84\00:57:27.58 that they've wrestled with for a long time but today. 00:57:27.61\00:57:30.65
