the old covenant was a covenant

And I was taught
that the Ten Commandments

were nailed to the cross
based on a single scripture:

look at that scripture.

Our objective this hour
is to determine what was

and was not nailed to the cross.

You know, in the year 2000,
two years before I became a SDA,

God led me on a
study of the sanctuary

and His covenants. And
this study... it was an

extensive study. But scripture
exposed the counterfeit teaching

that had been handed down to me.

I found out that salvation
had ALWAYS been by grace

and that righteousness
was ALWAYS by faith

and that the moral law of
God is still very much a part

So what we're going to do

is answer three questions.

the pattern that develops.

progression of HIS covenants.

a covenant is an
oath-bound promise.

It is a solemn pledge to
bless or serve another person

in a specific way.
And God is the author

of the covenant concept.

He began it in
the Garden of Eden.

In the Old Testament
times people adopted and copied

that covenant concept. And
with people, with human concepts

there are one of two types.

They were either bilateral
where you had 2 parties involved

like a treaty or a
contract or a partnership.

Or they were unilateral
where there was only one person

involved. This would
be a will or a testament.

Now this might surprise you -

at least some of you, particu-
larly if you're watching by TV -

but ALL of God's
covenants are unilateral.

Every single one of
God's covenants is unilateral.

God is the only One
who is making the promises.

Now sometimes His
promises are unconditional.

Like to Noah He promised
He would never flood the earth

To David He promised that David
would always have a descendant

upon the throne.
Unconditional promise.

But on other occasions God's
promise-keeping is conditional.

It is
conditioned upon a response

of mutual cooperation.

He requires faith to
receive His promises.

Humans can only enter
in into covenant with God

by accepting His offer
with a response of trust

the conditional terms that God

Now let me do a
little sidebar here

because I know there are
people who've been taught

the old covenant was bilateral.

That the people were
making a covenant with God;

He was making a
covenant with them.

I want to prove to you
that God's covenants were

unilateral. We're going to
look at a little language study.
00:12:55.94\00:12:58.64
What was the Old Testament
written in? What language?

Hebrew. In the Hebrew
the word for covenant is
00:13:02.71\00:13:06.88
beriyth. It means to
fetter, to bind, to bond
00:13:07.08\00:13:10.89
and to obligate yourself.
00:13:11.39\00:13:13.86
It is used 280 times
in the Old Testament.
00:13:14.06\00:13:17.26
Now two to three
centuries before Jesus
00:13:17.66\00:13:20.56
the Old Testament was trans-
lated from Hebrew into Greek.
00:13:20.96\00:13:26.00
That translation is
called the Septuagint.
00:13:26.20\00:13:29.44
And you may have
noticed sometimes it'll have LXX

for the Septuagint?
That Roman numeral 70

is used because there
were seventy Jewish scholars
00:13:37.45\00:13:40.65
who began the
work of the Septuagint.

And these 70 scholars
translated the first five books

of Moses. And when
they translated this

every single time
these 70 Jewish scholars
00:13:51.49\00:13:55.43
used the word in the
Greek that means unilateral.

Let me explain.

In the Greek there are
2 words. One is suntheke.

Suntheke: this is
when you have two parties
00:14:06.17\00:14:10.28
involved in the covenant.
There's 2 terms in the Greek
00:14:10.48\00:14:14.15
for covenant. Suntheke is when
there's two parties involved.
00:14:14.38\00:14:18.92
But diatheke is when
there's only one person
00:14:19.12\00:14:23.06
involved like a
will or a testament.
00:14:23.26\00:14:26.03
And these Jewish
scholars used the word diatheke
00:14:26.23\00:14:30.57
every single time for
all of God's covenants.

Now that's
significant because it shows us
00:14:34.37\00:14:38.44
that all of God's
covenants were unilateral.

And then in the New
Testament - and by the way,

the Septuagint is quoted
often in the New Testament

particularly by Paul, who
was also a Jewish scholar...

But in the New Testament

any time that any of the writers

spoke of God's covenants
- both the old and the new -

they used the same
Greek word diatheke.

This is the word the Holy
Spirit inspired them to use

to describe God's covenants.

So God is the One
doing the promises.

So what is the
purpose of God's covenants?

The unifying theme of scripture
is that our Creator God

is a covenant maker
and a covenant keeper.

This is how He defines and
establishes His relationship

throughout all the ages.

And the heart of God is
always seen in His covenants

because He is
saying: "I will be their God

and they will be My people. "

God's covenants
contain His promises for people

who are willing to enter
into an intimate relationship

with Him... and
that's why we were created!

We were created to
enjoy a relationship

of love and mutual trust

and one of unbroken
fellowship with God.

But fellowship
with God requires what?

Holiness. Fellowship
with God requires holiness.

We have to be
set apart from sin.

So when humans disobeyed
sin fractured this relationship

catch God by surprise.

Grace was given to us in
Christ before time began.

Revelation 13:8 says Jesus is:

His blood is the blood of
the everlasting covenant...

the covenant of
redemption by grace

Christ came to
redeem us and restore us

to fellowship with God.
He's the everlasting gospel...

The Old Testament
prophet Jeremiah called God

"the Lord, our righteousness. "

The Old Testament prophet Isaiah
said that "our righteousness

is nothing but
filthy rags before Him. "

And you know, it is
amazing to me that salvation

has always been by grace
because the Old Testament

and the New Testament said "sal-
vation belongs to the Lord. "

In the Old Testament there
is a word - a Hebrew word -

that is the
equivalent for grace.

And I'm surprised we
don't teach on this word more.

But it is hesed... H-E-S-E-D.

Let's look at this
definition of hesed

that is used 240
times in the Old Testament.

This is a rich word that you
should add to your vocabulary.

Grace? People say:
"Oh, there was no grace

in the Old Testament. "
Two hundred and forty times

it's speaking of hesed,
which shows us God's character

and His grace. So
let's take a quick look

at the progression
of God's covenants.
00:19:35.14\00:19:38.01
His covenant with Adam and Eve.
They were created in His image;
00:19:38.41\00:19:41.98
His moral character
was imprinted upon them.
00:19:42.34\00:19:45.71
They knew His love, they knew
His will. There was only one
00:19:45.91\00:19:48.82
commandment that was
needed and that was: "Do not eat
00:19:49.02\00:19:52.52
from the Tree of the
Knowledge of Good and Evil. "

In other words, don't
try to be your own God.

Don't try to determine
for yourself what is good

and what is evil.

And then God said: "If you
eat, you're going to die. "

But Satan said: "Oh

And they were deceived

by Satan and they disobeyed God.

And the curse of sin

that was from the Lord. And
they realized they were naked

life they experienced guilt

recognized their need for grace.

action the moment man sinned.

lamb to provide the covering

We see with Cain and Abel

But the animal's death

foreshadowed the substitution-
ary death, the redemptive work

of Jesus Christ. Now
let's look at Genesis 3:15.

God announced the
everlasting covenant of grace

in the Garden of

The Seed of the woman we
are told repeatedly in the

whom? Jesus Christ!

He is the One who would
win the victory over evil.

sin and restore paradise.

progressed to Abraham.

that he would be the father

constituted the nation of Israel

the world. " There are five com-
ponents in the Mosaic covenant.

Certainly the moral law, which
was spoken before Moses went up

the mountain, but
certainly the Ten Commandments.

The moral law was the
heart of the covenant.

of Rights for this new nation.

the ceremonial laws.

laws, the religious ordinances

dictating the worship. And
Moses received a good portion

law then on Mt. Sinai.

existing system of sacrifices
