And I know you're going to be blessed in this program. 00:00:30.29\00:00:32.93 A very important topic: Were the Ten Commandments 00:00:33.13\00:00:35.76 Nailed To The Cross? 00:00:35.96\00:00:37.30 And one of my favorite speakers - Shelley Quinn - 00:00:37.70\00:00:41.00 is going to divide the Word of God in a wonderful way 00:00:41.20\00:00:44.44 so please stay tuned. We know the Lord is going to 00:00:44.64\00:00:47.58 bless you tremendously. She's also going to pray 00:00:47.78\00:00:49.88 and so to give her the time she needs 00:00:50.28\00:00:53.21 because this woman of God knows how to divide the Word of God. 00:00:53.45\00:00:58.02 But we're going to pray for the Spirit of God to be in her life. 00:00:58.22\00:01:00.06 She's going to pray, but you continue to join us in prayer. 00:01:00.26\00:01:02.62 But before she comes to share from what the Lord has to tell 00:01:02.82\00:01:07.60 you today and how God has to lead and guide your life 00:01:07.76\00:01:10.80 we're going to have a song entitled The Power of the Cross 00:01:11.17\00:01:15.10 that's going to be brought to us by Celestine Barry. 00:01:15.50\00:01:18.51 After this song, the very next voice that you hear will be 00:01:18.71\00:01:22.54 that of Shelley Quinn. 00:01:22.74\00:01:25.41 Oh, to see the dawn 00:01:47.37\00:01:50.61 of the darkest day 00:01:51.31\00:01:55.14 Christ on the road to 00:01:55.68\00:01:59.68 Calvary. 00:02:00.18\00:02:03.62 Tried by sinful men, 00:02:04.22\00:02:07.89 torn and beaten then 00:02:08.82\00:02:12.29 nailed to a cross of wood. 00:02:12.99\00:02:18.80 This the power 00:02:20.24\00:02:24.44 of the cross: 00:02:24.64\00:02:27.58 Christ became 00:02:28.74\00:02:32.75 sin for us. 00:02:33.25\00:02:36.65 He took the blame, 00:02:37.42\00:02:41.46 bore the wrath: 00:02:41.66\00:02:43.96 We stand forgiven 00:02:44.16\00:02:47.40 at the cross. 00:02:47.60\00:02:51.27 Oh, to see the pain 00:02:59.94\00:03:03.78 written on Your face 00:03:04.55\00:03:08.15 bearing the awesome 00:03:08.55\00:03:12.75 weight of sin. 00:03:13.15\00:03:16.79 Every bitter thought, 00:03:17.33\00:03:20.73 every evil deed 00:03:21.43\00:03:25.27 crowning Your blood-stained brow! 00:03:26.17\00:03:32.07 This the power 00:03:33.41\00:03:37.65 of the cross: 00:03:37.85\00:03:40.58 Christ became 00:03:41.85\00:03:45.79 sin for us. 00:03:46.29\00:03:49.26 He took the blame, 00:03:50.23\00:03:54.30 bore the wrath: 00:03:54.66\00:03:56.80 We stand forgiven 00:03:57.00\00:04:00.37 at that cross. 00:04:00.57\00:04:04.61 Now the daylight flees, 00:04:21.72\00:04:25.03 now the ground beneath 00:04:25.96\00:04:29.46 Quakes as it's Maker 00:04:30.23\00:04:34.10 bows His head. 00:04:34.50\00:04:38.14 Curtain torn in two, 00:04:38.34\00:04:42.31 dead are raised to life, 00:04:42.81\00:04:47.05 "Finished" 00:04:47.25\00:04:48.98 the victory cry! 00:04:49.38\00:04:54.49 This the power 00:04:54.89\00:04:58.73 of the cross: 00:04:59.23\00:05:02.50 Christ became 00:05:03.47\00:05:07.57 sin for us. 00:05:07.94\00:05:11.47 He took the blame, 00:05:11.77\00:05:15.88 bore the wrath: 00:05:16.28\00:05:18.31 We stand forgiven 00:05:18.71\00:05:21.78 at that cross. 00:05:21.98\00:05:26.22 Oh, to see my name 00:05:34.63\00:05:38.20 written in the wounds 00:05:38.73\00:05:42.54 For through Your suffering 00:05:42.94\00:05:46.81 I am free! 00:05:47.14\00:05:51.05 Death is crushed to death 00:05:51.25\00:05:54.62 and life is mine to live 00:05:55.02\00:05:59.39 Won through Your 00:05:59.75\00:06:01.89 selfless love! 00:06:02.09\00:06:07.00 This the power 00:06:07.23\00:06:11.00 of the cross: 00:06:11.40\00:06:14.74 Son of God, 00:06:15.44\00:06:19.24 slain for us. 00:06:19.74\00:06:23.11 What a love! 00:06:23.68\00:06:27.42 What a cost! 00:06:27.78\00:06:30.09 We stand forgiven 00:06:30.29\00:06:33.39 at 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.62 the cross! 00:06:36.93\00:06:42.90 Ah... thank you so much Celestine! 00:06:49.10\00:06:52.94 Well I am so excited to have the opportunity 00:06:53.34\00:06:55.64 to present to you this hour what I hope will be 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.41 an eye-opening study of scripture... 00:06:58.61\00:07:02.05 one that will challenge an error that has been handed down 00:07:02.25\00:07:06.32 by the tradition of man. 00:07:06.52\00:07:08.99 One that has been received by many Christian circles 00:07:09.39\00:07:14.36 and accepted as truth. 00:07:14.56\00:07:16.70 I grew up believing that the old covenant was a covenant 00:07:16.90\00:07:21.10 of works and that the new covenant 00:07:21.30\00:07:24.07 in contrast was a covenant of grace. 00:07:24.27\00:07:26.61 And I was taught that the Ten Commandments 00:07:26.81\00:07:30.15 were nailed to the cross based on a single scripture: 00:07:30.35\00:07:34.18 Colossians 2:14. Let's look at that scripture. 00:07:34.38\00:07:37.75 Our objective this hour is to determine what was 00:07:48.63\00:07:52.17 and was not nailed to the cross. 00:07:52.37\00:07:54.77 You know, in the year 2000, two years before I became a SDA, 00:07:55.17\00:07:59.74 God led me on a study of the sanctuary 00:07:59.94\00:08:03.11 and His covenants. And this study... it was an 00:08:03.31\00:08:07.58 extensive study. But scripture exposed the counterfeit teaching 00:08:07.78\00:08:12.32 that had been handed down to me. 00:08:12.52\00:08:14.92 I found out that salvation had ALWAYS been by grace 00:08:15.32\00:08:20.30 and that righteousness was ALWAYS by faith 00:08:20.50\00:08:23.73 and that the moral law of God is still very much a part 00:08:23.93\00:08:27.77 of God's covenants. 00:08:27.97\00:08:29.64 It wasn't easy to change my mind. 00:08:30.04\00:08:33.58 Preconceived opinions effectively insulate our mind 00:08:34.01\00:08:38.98 against truth. So what I want to do right now 00:08:39.18\00:08:42.78 is let's pray and ask God to give us open-mindedness. 00:08:43.08\00:08:49.06 Heavenly Father, we come in the name of Jesus 00:08:49.76\00:08:52.29 and Father, we thank you so much for Your grace 00:08:52.59\00:08:55.00 and we thank you, Father, for this Camp Meeting 00:08:55.20\00:08:57.77 and this opportunity today 00:08:57.97\00:09:00.24 to speak about what was nailed to the cross. 00:09:00.44\00:09:03.07 Please send Your Holy Spirit to be our teacher, Lord. 00:09:03.27\00:09:06.41 Just get me out of the way. Speak through me, Father. 00:09:06.81\00:09:10.38 But in the name of Jesus I pray for everyone who is in 00:09:10.68\00:09:14.05 this audience or watching by TV, Internet, or on the radio, Lord. 00:09:14.25\00:09:18.59 Please give us open-mindedness 00:09:18.79\00:09:22.49 and give us ears to hear the truth that Your Holy Spirit 00:09:22.89\00:09:27.60 gives to us. In Jesus' holy name we pray. Amen. Amen! 00:09:27.93\00:09:32.90 To understand what was nailed to the cross 00:09:33.30\00:09:35.34 what we need to do is understand the progression 00:09:35.54\00:09:40.54 of God's covenants. So what we're going to do 00:09:40.78\00:09:43.71 in this hour is very ambitious. 00:09:43.95\00:09:46.08 We're going to take a rapid and sweeping review 00:09:46.28\00:09:51.09 of God's covenants. And in a race against the clock 00:09:51.29\00:09:54.26 we're not going to have time to look up every scripture. 00:09:54.46\00:09:57.23 So the scriptures will be on the side screens. 00:09:57.43\00:09:59.73 What we're going to do is answer three questions. 00:10:00.13\00:10:03.03 What is a covenant? 00:10:03.23\00:10:04.83 What was the purpose of God's covenants? 00:10:05.00\00:10:07.00 And what is the progression of God's everlasting covenant? 00:10:07.40\00:10:12.74 Now please don't get over- whelmed by the details 00:10:13.17\00:10:16.85 of this. What I'm asking you to do today 00:10:17.05\00:10:19.65 is sit back and see the pattern that develops. 00:10:19.85\00:10:23.49 See the big picture... 00:10:23.79\00:10:25.65 because until we see the big picture we're not going to 00:10:25.85\00:10:28.46 understand God's purposes 00:10:28.66\00:10:31.19 and His progression of HIS covenants. 00:10:31.49\00:10:33.90 In answer to our first question 00:10:34.30\00:10:36.13 a covenant is an oath-bound promise. 00:10:36.33\00:10:40.14 It is a solemn pledge to bless or serve another person 00:10:40.34\00:10:44.54 in a specific way. And God is the author 00:10:44.74\00:10:48.61 of the covenant concept. 00:10:48.81\00:10:50.41 He began it in the Garden of Eden. 00:10:50.81\00:10:53.01 In the Old Testament times people adopted and copied 00:10:53.42\00:10:58.39 that covenant concept. And with people, with human concepts 00:10:58.59\00:11:03.79 there are one of two types. 00:11:04.09\00:11:06.19 They were either bilateral where you had 2 parties involved 00:11:06.39\00:11:09.93 like a treaty or a contract or a partnership. 00:11:10.13\00:11:13.27 Or they were unilateral where there was only one person 00:11:13.57\00:11:17.94 involved. This would be a will or a testament. 00:11:18.14\00:11:21.74 Now this might surprise you - 00:11:22.24\00:11:24.38 at least some of you, particu- larly if you're watching by TV - 00:11:24.58\00:11:27.38 but ALL of God's covenants are unilateral. 00:11:27.78\00:11:31.99 Every single one of God's covenants is unilateral. 00:11:32.29\00:11:36.36 God is the only One who is making the promises. 00:11:36.56\00:11:40.20 Now sometimes His promises are unconditional. 00:11:40.40\00:11:43.10 Like to Noah He promised He would never flood the earth 00:11:43.50\00:11:46.43 again. Unconditionally. 00:11:46.63\00:11:48.14 To David He promised that David would always have a descendant 00:11:48.27\00:11:52.14 upon the throne. Unconditional promise. 00:11:52.34\00:11:54.61 But on other occasions God's promise-keeping is conditional. 00:11:55.01\00:11:58.98 It is conditioned upon a response 00:11:59.28\00:12:02.15 of mutual cooperation. 00:12:02.55\00:12:04.95 He requires faith to receive His promises. 00:12:05.15\00:12:08.89 Humans can only enter in into covenant with God 00:12:09.29\00:12:13.33 by accepting His offer with a response of trust 00:12:13.53\00:12:17.90 and faith and gratitude... 00:12:18.10\00:12:19.60 willingly submitting to the conditional terms that God 00:12:20.00\00:12:24.71 has set. We express our cove- nant loyalty and love to Him 00:12:24.91\00:12:30.31 by keeping covenant as He commands. 00:12:30.75\00:12:33.58 And within covenant context obedience is always 00:12:33.78\00:12:38.12 the pathway to blessings. 00:12:38.32\00:12:40.32 Now let me do a little sidebar here 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.16 because I know there are people who've been taught 00:12:42.56\00:12:44.63 the old covenant was bilateral. 00:12:44.83\00:12:47.20 That the people were making a covenant with God; 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.30 He was making a covenant with them. 00:12:50.50\00:12:52.17 I want to prove to you that God's covenants were 00:12:52.37\00:12:55.74 unilateral. We're going to look at a little language study. 00:12:55.94\00:12:58.64 What was the Old Testament written in? What language? 00:12:59.04\00:13:02.51 Hebrew. In the Hebrew the word for covenant is 00:13:02.71\00:13:06.88 beriyth. It means to fetter, to bind, to bond 00:13:07.08\00:13:10.89 and to obligate yourself. 00:13:11.39\00:13:13.86 It is used 280 times in the Old Testament. 00:13:14.06\00:13:17.26 Now two to three centuries before Jesus 00:13:17.66\00:13:20.56 the Old Testament was trans- lated from Hebrew into Greek. 00:13:20.96\00:13:26.00 That translation is called the Septuagint. 00:13:26.20\00:13:29.44 And you may have noticed sometimes it'll have LXX 00:13:29.64\00:13:33.58 for the Septuagint? That Roman numeral 70 00:13:33.78\00:13:37.25 is used because there were seventy Jewish scholars 00:13:37.45\00:13:40.65 who began the work of the Septuagint. 00:13:41.02\00:13:43.55 And these 70 scholars translated the first five books 00:13:43.75\00:13:47.12 of Moses. And when they translated this 00:13:47.32\00:13:51.09 every single time these 70 Jewish scholars 00:13:51.49\00:13:55.43 used the word in the Greek that means unilateral. 00:13:55.83\00:14:01.20 Let me explain. 00:14:01.40\00:14:02.77 In the Greek there are 2 words. One is suntheke. 00:14:03.17\00:14:05.97 Suntheke: this is when you have two parties 00:14:06.17\00:14:10.28 involved in the covenant. There's 2 terms in the Greek 00:14:10.48\00:14:14.15 for covenant. Suntheke is when there's two parties involved. 00:14:14.38\00:14:18.92 But diatheke is when there's only one person 00:14:19.12\00:14:23.06 involved like a will or a testament. 00:14:23.26\00:14:26.03 And these Jewish scholars used the word diatheke 00:14:26.23\00:14:30.57 every single time for all of God's covenants. 00:14:30.77\00:14:34.17 Now that's significant because it shows us 00:14:34.37\00:14:38.44 that all of God's covenants were unilateral. 00:14:38.81\00:14:42.28 And then in the New Testament - and by the way, 00:14:42.48\00:14:44.91 the Septuagint is quoted often in the New Testament 00:14:45.11\00:14:47.75 particularly by Paul, who was also a Jewish scholar... 00:14:47.95\00:14:51.42 But in the New Testament 00:14:51.62\00:14:53.52 any time that any of the writers 00:14:53.92\00:14:57.56 spoke of God's covenants - both the old and the new - 00:14:57.76\00:15:01.63 they used the same Greek word diatheke. 00:15:01.83\00:15:05.77 This is the word the Holy Spirit inspired them to use 00:15:05.97\00:15:09.17 to describe God's covenants. 00:15:09.37\00:15:11.87 So God is the One doing the promises. 00:15:12.27\00:15:16.08 So what is the purpose of God's covenants? 00:15:16.28\00:15:19.75 The unifying theme of scripture is that our Creator God 00:15:19.95\00:15:24.32 is a covenant maker and a covenant keeper. 00:15:24.52\00:15:27.36 This is how He defines and establishes His relationship 00:15:27.56\00:15:31.16 with mankind throughout all the ages. 00:15:31.36\00:15:34.03 And the heart of God is always seen in His covenants 00:15:34.46\00:15:38.17 because He is saying: "I will be their God 00:15:38.37\00:15:41.64 and they will be My people. " 00:15:41.84\00:15:44.21 God's covenants contain His promises for people 00:15:44.61\00:15:47.98 who are willing to enter into an intimate relationship 00:15:48.18\00:15:51.65 with Him... and that's why we were created! 00:15:51.85\00:15:54.22 We were created to enjoy a relationship 00:15:54.62\00:15:57.89 of love and mutual trust 00:15:58.09\00:16:00.59 and one of unbroken fellowship with God. 00:16:00.79\00:16:03.69 But fellowship with God requires what? 00:16:04.09\00:16:07.60 Holiness. Fellowship with God requires holiness. 00:16:08.20\00:16:12.37 We have to be set apart from sin. 00:16:12.57\00:16:14.64 So when humans disobeyed sin fractured this relationship 00:16:14.84\00:16:20.31 but it didn't catch God by surprise. 00:16:20.71\00:16:22.94 Before the beginning of time God determined 00:16:23.35\00:16:26.92 to have this bond of intimacy with His people. 00:16:27.12\00:16:31.39 How? Through His covenant of grace. 00:16:31.59\00:16:34.46 Let's look at II Timothy chapter 1 and verse 9. 00:16:34.66\00:16:38.63 II Timothy 1:9. 00:16:38.83\00:16:40.56 Grace was given to us in Christ before time began. 00:17:00.18\00:17:03.89 Revelation 13:8 says Jesus is: 00:17:04.09\00:17:07.69 His blood is the blood of the everlasting covenant... 00:17:11.86\00:17:14.86 the covenant of redemption by grace 00:17:15.26\00:17:17.57 established by God before time began. 00:17:17.77\00:17:20.57 Christ came to redeem us and restore us 00:17:20.77\00:17:23.94 to fellowship with God. He's the everlasting gospel... 00:17:24.14\00:17:29.08 that one gospel that has abided throughout the ages 00:17:29.28\00:17:32.05 from Adam and Eve onward. 00:17:32.45\00:17:35.55 And God's covenants are the progressive revelation, 00:17:35.75\00:17:40.32 the unfolding of His one eternal plan 00:17:40.52\00:17:45.56 of salvation by grace in Christ Jesus. 00:17:45.76\00:17:48.66 Let me repeat that. 00:17:48.86\00:17:50.20 God's covenants are the progressive revelation, 00:17:50.33\00:17:55.00 the unfolding of one eternal plan 00:17:55.20\00:17:59.24 of salvation by grace in Christ Jesus. 00:17:59.44\00:18:02.38 Righteousness has ALWAYS been by faith. 00:18:02.78\00:18:06.08 The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah called God 00:18:06.28\00:18:10.22 "the Lord, our righteousness. " 00:18:10.42\00:18:12.59 The Old Testament prophet Isaiah said that "our righteousness 00:18:12.79\00:18:16.73 is nothing but filthy rags before Him. " 00:18:16.93\00:18:19.53 And you know, it is amazing to me that salvation 00:18:19.73\00:18:23.73 has always been by grace because the Old Testament 00:18:23.93\00:18:27.54 and the New Testament said "sal- vation belongs to the Lord. " 00:18:27.74\00:18:31.94 In the Old Testament there is a word - a Hebrew word - 00:18:32.57\00:18:37.01 that is the equivalent for grace. 00:18:37.31\00:18:40.12 And I'm surprised we don't teach on this word more. 00:18:40.52\00:18:43.42 But it is hesed... H-E-S-E-D. 00:18:43.82\00:18:47.36 Let's look at this definition of hesed 00:18:47.56\00:18:50.79 that is used 240 times in the Old Testament. 00:18:50.99\00:18:55.23 This is a rich word that you should add to your vocabulary. 00:19:19.09\00:19:23.22 Grace? People say: "Oh, there was no grace 00:19:23.63\00:19:25.46 in the Old Testament. " Two hundred and forty times 00:19:25.63\00:19:28.30 it's speaking of hesed, which shows us God's character 00:19:28.50\00:19:32.47 and His grace. So let's take a quick look 00:19:32.67\00:19:34.94 at the progression of God's covenants. 00:19:35.14\00:19:38.01 His covenant with Adam and Eve. They were created in His image; 00:19:38.41\00:19:41.98 His moral character was imprinted upon them. 00:19:42.34\00:19:45.71 They knew His love, they knew His will. There was only one 00:19:45.91\00:19:48.82 commandment that was needed and that was: "Do not eat 00:19:49.02\00:19:52.52 from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. " 00:19:52.72\00:19:55.59 In other words, don't try to be your own God. 00:19:55.99\00:19:58.43 Don't try to determine for yourself what is good 00:19:58.63\00:20:01.76 and what is evil. 00:20:01.96\00:20:03.30 And then God said: "If you eat, you're going to die. " 00:20:03.50\00:20:07.47 But Satan said: "Oh no, you won't die... 00:20:07.90\00:20:10.37 you'll be like God. " And they were deceived 00:20:10.57\00:20:14.41 by Satan and they disobeyed God. 00:20:14.64\00:20:17.51 And the curse of sin came on them and they lost 00:20:17.71\00:20:20.95 their covering of light... that Shekinah glory 00:20:21.18\00:20:24.39 that was from the Lord. And they realized they were naked 00:20:24.59\00:20:28.52 and for the first time in their life they experienced guilt 00:20:28.72\00:20:31.99 and fear and they recognized their need for grace. 00:20:32.19\00:20:36.93 And grace was put into action the moment man sinned. 00:20:37.43\00:20:42.14 God by grace killed a lamb to provide the covering 00:20:42.54\00:20:45.94 for their sin and their nakedness. 00:20:46.14\00:20:47.81 And He established the substitutionary system 00:20:48.01\00:20:51.05 of sacrifices to obtain forgiveness of sin. 00:20:51.28\00:20:55.15 It's obvious that Adam and Eve passed this knowledge on 00:20:55.35\00:20:58.32 throughout the generations. We see with Cain and Abel 00:20:58.52\00:21:01.06 and the others. But the animal's death 00:21:01.26\00:21:04.39 foreshadowed the substitution- ary death, the redemptive work 00:21:04.59\00:21:09.80 of Jesus Christ. Now let's look at Genesis 3:15. 00:21:10.00\00:21:13.44 God announced the everlasting covenant of grace 00:21:13.84\00:21:16.60 in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 3:15. 00:21:16.81\00:21:19.57 The Seed of the woman we are told repeatedly in the 00:21:29.68\00:21:32.59 New Testament was whom? Jesus Christ! 00:21:32.79\00:21:36.59 He is the One who would win the victory over evil. 00:21:36.99\00:21:40.50 He is the One who would destroy sin and restore paradise. 00:21:40.70\00:21:44.77 Now the covenant progressed to Abraham. 00:21:45.17\00:21:49.00 God promised Abraham that he would be the father 00:21:49.40\00:21:52.37 of a multitude and that all the nations 00:21:52.57\00:21:56.11 would be blessed through his Seed... 00:21:56.31\00:21:59.08 which Paul told the Galatians that descended Seed was 00:21:59.28\00:22:03.22 Jesus Christ. Let's look at Genesis 15:6. 00:22:03.42\00:22:06.65 We're going to look at the Amplified version. 00:22:06.96\00:22:09.59 Genesis 15:6. "And he - Abraham - 00:22:09.79\00:22:13.86 believed in... " And in the Amplified what you 00:22:14.03\00:22:19.73 see in the parenthesis is explaining the word before. 00:22:19.93\00:22:23.97 So to believe in in the Hebrew meant 00:22:24.37\00:22:27.28 to trust in, rely on, remain steadfast to the Lord. 00:22:27.48\00:22:31.55 "And He... " God... "counted it to him... " 00:22:31.75\00:22:35.15 He accounted it to Abraham... "as righteousness. " 00:22:35.35\00:22:39.29 As right-standing with God. 00:22:39.49\00:22:41.02 So the progressive revelation of God's covenant of grace 00:22:41.46\00:22:45.63 is that you would be justified by faith. 00:22:45.79\00:22:50.10 And Abraham was justified 14 years before he was circumcised. 00:22:50.30\00:22:55.00 Now let's look at Hebrews 11:8. 00:22:55.40\00:22:57.27 Hebrews 11:8. 00:22:57.57\00:22:58.91 The everlasting covenant of grace, this unilateral 00:23:10.45\00:23:13.79 covenant: God made all the promises 00:23:13.99\00:23:16.49 emphasizing what He would do. 00:23:16.89\00:23:19.36 But it was conditioned on faith. 00:23:19.76\00:23:22.06 It was conditioned on trusting in and relying on 00:23:22.26\00:23:25.33 and steadfastly following God's guidance. 00:23:25.53\00:23:29.44 Because of God's promised covenant blessings 00:23:29.84\00:23:32.67 Abraham obeyed. He left his countrymen, 00:23:32.87\00:23:35.44 his kindred. He even was ready to offer up Isaac 00:23:35.64\00:23:38.61 when he was tested. But he maintained covenant loyalty 00:23:38.81\00:23:42.75 to God. And obedience was his response of love 00:23:42.95\00:23:47.29 and appreciation for God's covenant blessings. 00:23:47.49\00:23:50.83 Now God takes Abraham's covenant after his death 00:23:51.23\00:23:54.66 and He renews it with Abraham's son Isaac. 00:23:54.86\00:23:58.93 Let's look at Genesis 26 verses 4 and 5. 00:23:59.13\00:24:02.54 God is speaking to Isaac, and God says in Genesis 26:4-5: 00:24:03.04\00:24:08.14 Abraham was justified by faith through grace. 00:24:28.73\00:24:32.43 The covenant blessings, though, were conditioned upon obedience 00:24:32.63\00:24:36.87 to God's voice. There was no written word at the time 00:24:37.07\00:24:40.04 of Abraham. Abraham spoke with God face to face 00:24:40.24\00:24:44.35 and he knew the principles of God's government. 00:24:44.55\00:24:47.12 He knew God's Ten Commandment law 00:24:47.32\00:24:50.59 and it is obvious that knowledge was passed from generation 00:24:50.79\00:24:53.86 to generation. When we look at the record of Genesis 00:24:54.06\00:24:57.09 we see that all of God's people knew His Ten Commandments. 00:24:57.29\00:25:00.46 For example, think about Joseph. 00:25:00.86\00:25:03.53 He knew he would be sinning against God to commit adultery 00:25:03.73\00:25:06.94 with Potiphar's wife. Jacob knew that it was a sin 00:25:07.14\00:25:11.01 to have idols in his camp and he got rid of them. 00:25:11.21\00:25:13.68 But now during the course of time what happened 00:25:14.18\00:25:16.24 to Abraham's descendants? They went into slavery. 00:25:16.44\00:25:20.42 They were in bondage in Egypt for 400 years... 00:25:20.62\00:25:23.79 just as God had said would happen. 00:25:24.19\00:25:26.45 And when they're there they cry out for deliverance 00:25:26.96\00:25:30.13 to God, and Exodus 2:24 says: 00:25:30.33\00:25:33.46 "God remembered His everlasting covenant. " 00:25:33.76\00:25:37.30 He remembered His promises to Abraham. 00:25:37.70\00:25:41.17 And God desired to share the very same covenant 00:25:41.37\00:25:46.98 relationship with the children of Israel. 00:25:47.18\00:25:50.25 Let's look at Exodus chapter 6 verses 2 through 7. 00:25:50.45\00:25:54.28 Exodus chapter 6 beginning with verse 2: 00:25:54.48\00:25:57.92 Now Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were familiar with the name 00:26:18.34\00:26:21.38 Jehovah or Lord, but they did not know by experience, 00:26:21.58\00:26:26.38 knowing that... seeing God as a covenant keeper 00:26:26.58\00:26:31.62 because they died before they saw the promises. 00:26:31.82\00:26:34.99 So now, speaking to Moses in verse 4 He says: 00:26:35.39\00:26:38.09 Any time you see therefore in scripture 00:26:58.21\00:27:00.38 or the word so this is a bridge 00:27:00.58\00:27:02.98 bridging what's just been said to what's coming. 00:27:03.18\00:27:06.29 In gracious hesed God powerfully redeemed Israel 00:27:23.61\00:27:28.11 bringing all of these judgments on Egypt. 00:27:28.34\00:27:32.11 And you know, after 400 years as slaves 00:27:32.31\00:27:35.48 in a pagan country where they practiced idolatry 00:27:35.68\00:27:39.05 God's people... it had been difficult for them to worship 00:27:39.45\00:27:44.16 as God had prescribed. 00:27:44.36\00:27:45.79 Over time they lost much of their understanding 00:27:45.99\00:27:48.83 of God's principles. But God graciously delivered them 00:27:49.03\00:27:53.37 from the bondage of slavery. He saved them 00:27:53.57\00:27:56.97 before they measured up to His moral standards. 00:27:57.17\00:28:01.98 Do you get that? 00:28:02.38\00:28:03.71 God saved Israel BEFORE they were walking 00:28:03.78\00:28:09.18 in obedience to Him in perfect obedience. 00:28:09.38\00:28:11.79 That was not the pre- condition of their salvation. 00:28:11.99\00:28:15.42 He delivered them through the Red Sea. 00:28:15.82\00:28:17.89 He brought them to the Mount of Sinai. 00:28:18.09\00:28:21.20 They were to be His covenant people 00:28:21.40\00:28:24.17 and enjoy the riches of the blessings and the inheritance 00:28:24.37\00:28:27.74 of Abraham. Let's look at Exodus 19. 00:28:27.94\00:28:31.94 Exodus 19:3-8. 00:28:32.44\00:28:34.48 He's relating back to His covenant with Abraham. 00:29:29.23\00:29:32.20 where He said to Abraham: "In you all the families 00:29:32.40\00:29:35.37 of the earth will be blessed. " 00:29:35.57\00:29:37.14 Now what had God commanded Moses to tell the people? 00:29:49.65\00:29:52.79 Simply: "Hey! I have saved you; 00:29:53.46\00:29:56.06 I have redeemed you in covenant love. 00:29:56.22\00:29:58.63 Now if you respond in covenant loyalty 00:29:58.93\00:30:01.66 by listening to My voice and walking in My ways 00:30:01.86\00:30:04.50 You're going to be My special treasure. 00:30:04.70\00:30:06.84 You're going to help Me spread the everlasting gospel. " 00:30:07.04\00:30:11.24 As Creator and Redeemer God wanted to establish 00:30:11.44\00:30:16.28 an intimate relationship with Israel. 00:30:16.48\00:30:19.05 He pledged His benevolence and protection 00:30:19.25\00:30:22.68 in exchange for their loyalty. 00:30:22.85\00:30:25.45 And the people responded I believe appropriately 00:30:25.65\00:30:29.26 pledging their covenant loyalty. 00:30:29.66\00:30:32.59 The people agreed to enter into covenant relationship 00:30:32.76\00:30:37.07 with God before He ever spoke the Ten Commandments 00:30:37.27\00:30:40.90 from the mountain. And this covenant was to be conditioned 00:30:41.10\00:30:45.34 upon hearing His voice. And obedience was to be 00:30:45.54\00:30:49.41 their appreciation for the sal- vation they'd already received, 00:30:49.61\00:30:53.65 an expression of their covenant relationship. 00:30:53.85\00:30:57.19 Now next in the history God now requires the people 00:30:58.42\00:31:04.43 to consecrate themselves. 00:31:04.63\00:31:07.40 He's going to appear on the mountain and He tells Moses: 00:31:07.93\00:31:10.97 "You tell them to consecrate themselves. " 00:31:11.17\00:31:13.10 The people had no sense of their own sinfulness 00:31:13.50\00:31:16.00 and they had no sense of God's glory and His holiness. 00:31:16.20\00:31:21.31 He needs to remind them that He is a holy God. 00:31:21.71\00:31:26.25 So He begins His "shock and awe" campaign 00:31:26.45\00:31:31.22 coming down on the mountain with thundering and lightning's. 00:31:31.42\00:31:35.72 And this is a pyrotechnic display of God. 00:31:36.12\00:31:40.23 And the mountain quakes and the trumped sounded loud 00:31:40.43\00:31:44.60 and long. This was all simply to humble the people 00:31:44.80\00:31:49.54 that they might revere the Lord 00:31:49.94\00:31:52.71 and to provide them a sense of His nearness 00:31:52.87\00:31:56.58 and His power to help them overcome sin. 00:31:56.78\00:32:00.05 But as the people trembled in the awe-inspiring presence 00:32:00.55\00:32:04.39 of God, God speaks Ten Command- ments to the entire nation 00:32:04.59\00:32:09.59 beginning with this preamble of love. 00:32:09.96\00:32:12.99 Let's look at Exodus 20 verses 1 and 2. 00:32:13.19\00:32:16.33 In other words: "I am your Redeemer. 00:32:26.01\00:32:28.98 I am the One who saved you. " Then God speaks 00:32:29.18\00:32:32.85 ten words... at least that's what it's called 00:32:33.01\00:32:36.32 in the Hebrew: aseret hadevarim. 00:32:36.52\00:32:40.12 And in the Greek it's called The Decalogue, which also means 00:32:40.32\00:32:43.66 ten words. Now it's interesting that we translate it 00:32:43.86\00:32:47.96 into English as commandments. 00:32:48.13\00:32:50.97 And the reason we do is the syntax, word arrangement, 00:32:51.27\00:32:55.74 indicates that these are commandments. 00:32:55.94\00:32:59.94 But the Ten Commandments were written in the future tense 00:33:00.41\00:33:05.05 which indicates that they are promises of God. 00:33:05.25\00:33:09.98 What was God saying? He is saying 00:33:10.19\00:33:13.42 "I am the Lord your God. I saved you; I redeemed you. 00:33:13.62\00:33:16.73 And I promise you, you'll have no other gods before Me. 00:33:16.93\00:33:20.30 You will not make idols and bow down to them. 00:33:20.50\00:33:23.13 You're not going to take My name in vain. 00:33:23.53\00:33:25.63 You will remember the Sabbath. You'll be excited 00:33:25.83\00:33:28.57 to come and spend this time with Me. 00:33:28.80\00:33:30.91 You will honor your mother and father. 00:33:31.21\00:33:33.07 You won't commit murder. 00:33:33.27\00:33:34.98 You're not going to commit adultery. 00:33:35.18\00:33:36.75 You're not going to steal. 00:33:36.95\00:33:38.28 You will not bear false testimony. 00:33:38.31\00:33:41.05 You will not covet. " Why? 00:33:41.25\00:33:43.45 Because that's what being in covenant relationship 00:33:43.85\00:33:47.99 with Me will be like. I am your Redeemer. 00:33:48.19\00:33:53.03 I am the One who will keep you from sin. " 00:33:53.23\00:33:56.23 The Ten Commandments revealed God's character. 00:33:56.60\00:34:01.54 The Ten Commandments revealed the people's sinfulness 00:34:01.94\00:34:06.81 but it also revealed their need for a Savior 00:34:07.01\00:34:12.25 and for the grace of God to meet His covenant moral standards. 00:34:12.45\00:34:17.39 So let's look at the rest of the timeline on the mountain. 00:34:17.59\00:34:21.59 The awe-struck assembly are shaking in their boots right now 00:34:21.79\00:34:26.13 and they ask Moses to be their go-between... 00:34:26.73\00:34:29.53 to be their mediator. 00:34:29.66\00:34:31.00 Did you know that this really disappointed Moses? 00:34:31.03\00:34:33.34 He knew... Oh, you guys didn't get it! 00:34:33.54\00:34:36.17 In Exodus 20:20 he said: "Oh, no, no, no... 00:34:36.37\00:34:39.37 do not fear for God has come to test you 00:34:39.57\00:34:43.45 that His fear may be before you. That His reverence 00:34:43.85\00:34:47.42 may be before you that you may not sin. " 00:34:47.62\00:34:50.62 Moses understood God's "shock and awe" campaign 00:34:51.02\00:34:54.72 on the mount. He understood God's character. 00:34:54.92\00:34:57.69 But the people still wanted Moses to be the go-between. 00:34:57.89\00:35:00.73 So he goes back up the mountain and God speaks to Moses 00:35:00.93\00:35:04.90 alone and He gives him words of a special covenant for Israel. 00:35:05.10\00:35:09.30 This covenant constituted the nation of Israel 00:35:09.50\00:35:13.91 as a theocracy. These words consecrated the nation, 00:35:14.11\00:35:19.78 set them apart for God. 00:35:19.98\00:35:21.78 And did you know that the Old Testament prophets 00:35:21.98\00:35:24.29 considered the old covenant as the marriage of Israel to God? 00:35:24.49\00:35:30.13 They believed that now God... the people would worship 00:35:30.33\00:35:33.93 and obey the Lord alone. 00:35:34.10\00:35:35.80 The principle of the covenant was simple: "Be holy 00:35:36.00\00:35:39.20 for I am holy. " And the purpose of the covenant 00:35:39.40\00:35:42.44 was: "As a holy nation I will use you to influence 00:35:42.64\00:35:47.31 the world. " There are five com- ponents in the Mosaic covenant. 00:35:47.51\00:35:51.95 Certainly the moral law, which was spoken before Moses went up 00:35:52.15\00:35:56.25 the mountain, but certainly the Ten Commandments. 00:35:56.45\00:35:59.19 The moral law was the heart of the covenant. 00:35:59.39\00:36:01.86 I think of it as the Bill of Rights for this new nation. 00:36:02.06\00:36:05.33 It called the redeemed to respond to the grace 00:36:05.53\00:36:09.83 that they experienced in salvation with a covenant 00:36:10.03\00:36:12.90 commitment first to God and then to the covenant community. 00:36:13.10\00:36:17.17 The first four commandments protect God's rights 00:36:17.57\00:36:20.84 as the covenant Lord... as their Creator and Redeemer. 00:36:21.04\00:36:24.25 And the last six protect the civil rights of the 00:36:24.65\00:36:28.05 covenant community. 00:36:28.25\00:36:29.62 Now the second component were civil laws. 00:36:29.82\00:36:32.79 These laws dictated the relationship with each other. 00:36:32.99\00:36:36.86 And these were ordinances and statutes for their civil 00:36:37.59\00:36:42.00 society but I guarantee you the judicial arrangements 00:36:42.20\00:36:46.03 for God's people were certainly far superior to anything 00:36:46.23\00:36:51.67 that were known at the time. And in fact it has become 00:36:51.87\00:36:55.84 the grand model that underlies much of modern legislation. 00:36:56.04\00:37:00.62 Thirdly, there were the ceremonial laws. 00:37:00.82\00:37:04.05 God spoke the ceremonial laws, the religious ordinances 00:37:04.25\00:37:08.32 dictating the worship. And Moses received a good portion 00:37:08.52\00:37:11.69 of the ceremonial law then on Mt. Sinai. 00:37:11.89\00:37:14.73 This expanded the existing system of sacrifices 00:37:14.93\00:37:19.43 and God added the annual Sabbaths, 00:37:19.63\00:37:22.54 these feast days and different things that foreshadowed 00:37:22.74\00:37:27.18 Christ's work. Now the fourth component 00:37:27.38\00:37:30.98 of the Mosaic covenant was God's righteous judgments 00:37:31.18\00:37:35.38 against lawbreakers. But the fifth component 00:37:35.58\00:37:39.75 is something we don't talk about much. 00:37:39.95\00:37:41.99 Those judgments were followed by the promises of God 00:37:42.62\00:37:47.10 as their King to undertake their guidance and their protection 00:37:47.30\00:37:52.80 by the provision of a special angel. 00:37:53.00\00:37:56.60 What does the word angel mean? 00:37:57.01\00:37:58.81 Messenger! So God had a messenger of the covenant 00:37:59.04\00:38:04.35 that was going to go with the people. 00:38:04.55\00:38:06.21 Let's look at Exodus 23 verses 20 and 21. 00:38:06.41\00:38:10.69 Exodus 23:20-21. 00:38:10.89\00:38:13.96 The messenger of the covenant was a manifestation of the 00:38:32.44\00:38:36.01 person of Jesus Christ. Many scholars believe this 00:38:36.21\00:38:40.08 including the widely-accepted scholar Matthew Henry. 00:38:40.28\00:38:44.62 Because all that was said about this angel 00:38:45.32\00:38:48.72 was attributed to the Lord. 00:38:48.92\00:38:51.23 So the covenant expectancy was that they would obey 00:38:51.43\00:38:57.33 and walk in obedience to Christ's guidance 00:38:58.43\00:39:01.94 and then the Lord would fulfill His good and gracious promises. 00:39:02.14\00:39:05.67 All right, turn in your Bibles to Exodus 24. 00:39:05.87\00:39:08.31 I want you to see this. Exodus 24.We're going to look 00:39:08.51\00:39:11.35 at verse 3 through 8. 00:39:11.55\00:39:12.98 Moses had been up on the mountain. 00:39:13.38\00:39:15.02 God had spoken the special terms of a temporary covenant 00:39:15.22\00:39:19.25 for Israel. And now Moses has come down the mountain. 00:39:19.45\00:39:23.19 Let's look at Exodus 24 beginning with verse 3: 00:39:23.39\00:39:26.96 Did you know that the Book of the Covenant is the 00:40:28.59\00:40:31.73 first-mentioned book of the written Word of God? 00:40:31.93\00:40:35.73 The Book of the Covenant is the first-mentioned word 00:40:36.63\00:40:39.93 of the written Word of God. 00:40:40.14\00:40:43.27 The people heard the covenant terms twice 00:40:43.47\00:40:46.47 and they had full understanding. But without one dissenting voice 00:40:46.68\00:40:51.05 they said: "All that the Lord has said we will do. " 00:40:51.25\00:40:53.55 You know, it shows to me two things. 00:40:54.22\00:40:57.25 First of all they were completely ignorant 00:40:57.65\00:41:00.36 of their own sinful condition. 00:41:00.56\00:41:02.96 And they were so self-confident that they could do this 00:41:03.36\00:41:06.49 in their own strength. But the ready acceptance of the terms 00:41:06.70\00:41:12.13 shows me that the Ten Commandments 00:41:12.33\00:41:15.60 were not new moral principles. 00:41:15.80\00:41:18.01 This was just sanctioning what was familiar to them. 00:41:18.21\00:41:21.84 The Ten Commandments - the principles of God's love - 00:41:22.24\00:41:26.08 were known to all generations through oral tradition. 00:41:26.28\00:41:29.88 And the civil laws must have appealed to their consciences 00:41:30.09\00:41:32.85 fair and right doing. 00:41:33.05\00:41:34.39 The ceremonial laws must have seemed like reasonable service 00:41:34.62\00:41:37.13 to the Lord so they say: "Sure! All that the Lord has 00:41:37.33\00:41:40.30 said we will do. " And immediately after ratifying 00:41:40.50\00:41:43.87 the covenant Moses goes back up the mountain 00:41:44.07\00:41:46.67 for 40 days and 40 nights. And God says to him 00:41:46.84\00:41:49.54 in Exodus 25 and verse 8... 00:41:49.74\00:41:51.87 Exodus 25:8: 00:41:52.07\00:41:53.84 "Let them make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them. " 00:41:54.04\00:41:57.41 He wanted to be with His people; He wanted to 00:41:57.81\00:41:59.78 bless them and forgive them. And the sanctuary 00:42:00.05\00:42:02.98 was the theology of grace in a physical form. 00:42:03.18\00:42:07.66 The services of the sanctuary were God's remedy for sin 00:42:07.86\00:42:13.29 and the substitutionary death was the foundation 00:42:13.50\00:42:16.63 of God's covenants because God's holiness and justice 00:42:16.83\00:42:22.00 are behind His covenants. Holiness and justice 00:42:22.20\00:42:25.41 demand that guilty sinners die. 00:42:25.61\00:42:28.31 So either the sinner or the substitute had to die. 00:42:28.51\00:42:31.31 Then God tells Moses in Exodus 25 and verse 16: 00:42:31.71\00:42:35.85 The Testimony of God is His Ten Commandments! 00:42:42.56\00:42:46.16 Then God writes these Ten Commandments - Amen! 00:42:46.56\00:42:49.06 and He gives them to Moses. Moses goes down the mountain 00:42:49.36\00:42:53.17 and what does he find? The people have already broken 00:42:53.37\00:42:55.70 the covenant. They have fashioned a golden calf. 00:42:55.90\00:42:59.41 They've got a pagan worship orgy going on. 00:42:59.61\00:43:02.38 So in righteous anger Moses breaks that, but then God 00:43:02.81\00:43:06.35 tells him in Exodus 34:1: 00:43:06.55\00:43:08.98 So God engraves these the second time 00:43:19.19\00:43:22.13 and Moses puts them on the inside of the ark. 00:43:22.33\00:43:25.70 That's significant because the ark was the throne of God. 00:43:25.93\00:43:28.90 This... stone shows permanency, 00:43:29.30\00:43:31.74 so this was the foundation of God's government. 00:43:31.94\00:43:36.44 The mercy seat was over it, though, 'cause mercy always 00:43:37.18\00:43:40.35 triumphs judgment. So it was the third month 00:43:40.55\00:43:43.18 after the exodus from Egypt that Moses wrote 00:43:43.55\00:43:47.79 the Book of the Covenant. And then in the ninth month 00:43:47.99\00:43:50.23 after the tabernacle was done he wrote Leviticus. 00:43:50.43\00:43:53.80 And in Leviticus this is the book of the priests 00:43:54.00\00:43:58.03 basically. This was supplemental. 00:43:58.23\00:44:00.54 It wasn't in the covenant terms... it was supplemental 00:44:00.94\00:44:04.24 and it had the ritual directions. It also had 00:44:04.44\00:44:07.61 the dietary laws and other health things 00:44:07.81\00:44:10.91 that were just an expansion of what God had already told Noah. 00:44:11.11\00:44:15.08 But 39 years later on the plains of Moab 00:44:15.48\00:44:18.82 Moses repeats and reinforces this Book of the Covenant. 00:44:19.02\00:44:24.49 And this is what is written in Deuteronomy. 00:44:24.89\00:44:29.33 Turn to Deuteronomy 31 24 through 26. 00:44:29.53\00:44:33.80 Moses now... They've been wandering for 40 years. 00:44:34.57\00:44:39.07 So now Moses before he dies 00:44:39.57\00:44:41.64 he addresses the people several times 00:44:41.84\00:44:43.61 and he expands the terms of the Book of the Covenant 00:44:43.78\00:44:48.05 and he writes it in what they call the Book of the Law. 00:44:48.25\00:44:51.45 This Book of the Law... the handwriting of Moses. 00:45:15.51\00:45:18.81 Now people confuse the Book of the Law 00:45:19.01\00:45:22.65 and the law of Moses. The law of Moses was what? 00:45:22.85\00:45:26.72 The first five books of the Old Testament. 00:45:26.92\00:45:30.63 But the Book of the Law was what was written in Deuteronomy. 00:45:30.83\00:45:34.96 Let me show you this from Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary. 00:45:35.36\00:45:39.47 So here it is on the side of the pocket... 00:45:57.02\00:46:00.06 the side pocket of the ark as a witness against them. 00:46:00.26\00:46:03.99 But, oh, don't despair, Israel, because by grace 00:46:04.29\00:46:08.50 everything about the sacrificial system points to Jesus Christ. 00:46:09.33\00:46:15.17 And this Mosaic covenant was so needed because 00:46:15.94\00:46:21.84 it helped man as a preparatory work 00:46:22.04\00:46:24.91 to understand his sin and God's holiness. 00:46:25.11\00:46:27.68 It was intended to awaken their desire for knowing God 00:46:27.88\00:46:31.85 and to bring them to Christ. The purpose of the old covenant 00:46:32.05\00:46:35.56 was to get them to accept salva- tion by grace through faith. 00:46:35.76\00:46:40.86 So now, this Book of the Law 00:46:41.46\00:46:44.40 in Deuteronomy was always meant to be temporary. 00:46:44.60\00:46:47.94 Paul said that it was added 00:46:48.14\00:46:50.84 "until the Seed to whom the promise was made 00:46:51.04\00:46:56.85 would come. " Who's he speaking of? 00:46:57.05\00:46:59.15 Who's that Seed? Jesus! Let's look at Isaiah 42:6. 00:46:59.55\00:47:03.08 I've gotta get this in. This is a Messianic prophecy 00:47:03.28\00:47:06.39 about Jesus. Isaiah 42 verse 6. 00:47:06.59\00:47:09.52 JESUS is God's everlasting covenant of grace! 00:47:24.04\00:47:28.28 He fulfills all of the covenants. 00:47:28.48\00:47:30.81 He's the Seed of the woman; the Seed of Abraham. 00:47:31.01\00:47:32.91 He's the end goal of the Mosaic covenant. 00:47:33.11\00:47:36.69 He is the King, the descendant of David, 00:47:36.89\00:47:39.55 who will sit on the throne forever. 00:47:39.75\00:47:41.69 He's the Alpha and the Omega of God's progressive covenants 00:47:41.89\00:47:46.39 of salvation by grace and righteousness by faith. 00:47:46.59\00:47:49.93 And here is our question: 00:47:50.13\00:47:52.90 we... the new covenant is unilateral just like the old. 00:47:53.10\00:47:55.97 It is conditional just like the old, is it not? 00:47:56.37\00:47:59.94 The new covenant is conditioned on accepting Christ 00:48:00.44\00:48:03.61 as our Savior and walking in living faith in Him. 00:48:03.81\00:48:07.82 But are the Ten Commandments still the foundation of God's 00:48:08.22\00:48:11.32 government? Are they the heart of the old 00:48:11.52\00:48:13.66 as they were the heart... the heart of 00:48:13.86\00:48:17.23 the new covenant as they were the heart of the old covenant? 00:48:17.36\00:48:20.00 Let's look at Hebrews chapter 8 verse 8. 00:48:20.20\00:48:24.20 Hebrews 8, we'll start with 8. 00:48:24.87\00:48:26.94 God found fault with the people of the old covenant. 00:48:51.76\00:48:55.30 Israel's sad history of dis- obedience and covenant breaking 00:48:55.50\00:48:59.57 continued, and they twisted and distorted 00:48:59.77\00:49:02.34 His... obedience to His law as a means of salvation. 00:49:02.54\00:49:06.24 And they would rigorously follow the ceremonial regulations 00:49:06.74\00:49:12.65 but they would break the moral laws. 00:49:12.85\00:49:15.45 They were satisfied with external religion. 00:49:15.85\00:49:18.72 Are we? God desires His children to be one with Him 00:49:18.92\00:49:23.29 in spirit and in mind so He writes His commandments 00:49:23.49\00:49:27.50 on our heart that we will be like Jesus 00:49:27.66\00:49:30.70 and delight to do His will. 00:49:30.90\00:49:32.43 Jesus! Let's look at Hebrews chapter 7. 00:49:33.27\00:49:37.97 Hebrews chapter 7. I want you to look at verse 22 00:49:38.17\00:49:43.08 and - boy - underline this one. 00:49:43.28\00:49:45.51 Hebrews 7, we'll look at 22, 24, and 25. 00:49:45.71\00:49:48.98 Now pay attention: Jesus is surety 00:50:18.25\00:50:24.02 to us for God's covenant obligations. 00:50:24.22\00:50:28.76 All of God's promises are yes and amen in Christ Jesus. 00:50:29.16\00:50:33.23 So Jesus is our surety 00:50:33.63\00:50:36.06 that all of God's promises are ours. 00:50:36.26\00:50:38.87 But Jesus is our surety for us. 00:50:39.07\00:50:43.37 Jesus is our guarantor 00:50:43.57\00:50:47.68 that we will meet our covenant obligations to God. 00:50:47.88\00:50:52.51 That's why Paul can write in Philippians and say: 00:50:53.01\00:50:57.19 "Hey, it is God who works in you to will and to do. 00:50:57.39\00:51:00.89 He will complete the good work that He has begun in you. " 00:51:01.09\00:51:04.73 Jesus is our surety! 00:51:04.93\00:51:07.86 It is impossible for a holy and righteous God, 00:51:08.23\00:51:12.00 our Creator, to take into His fellowship those who don't 00:51:12.50\00:51:16.67 walk in obedience. But the new covenant provides 00:51:16.87\00:51:20.64 a guarantee for obedience because Christ is our surety. 00:51:20.81\00:51:26.18 Christ undertakes the fulfillment of God's part 00:51:26.58\00:51:30.82 and our part. He gives us a new heart. 00:51:31.02\00:51:33.92 He puts His Spirit within us 00:51:34.12\00:51:36.16 and He causes us to be what He calls us to do... 00:51:36.39\00:51:39.76 to be. Jesus' death on the cross as our substitute 00:51:39.96\00:51:44.63 brought the new covenant in and made the old covenant obsolete. 00:51:44.83\00:51:50.64 The old covenant was ratified with the blood of an animal 00:51:51.04\00:51:54.64 that was symbolic of Jesus. 00:51:54.84\00:51:56.68 But the new covenant was ratified with the precious 00:51:56.88\00:52:00.92 lifeblood of Jesus Christ. Amen! 00:52:01.12\00:52:03.79 When He initiated the Lord's Supper Christ said 00:52:04.12\00:52:06.82 "This cup is the new covenant in My blood 00:52:07.02\00:52:11.13 which was shed for you. " 00:52:11.33\00:52:12.93 So Christ's death on the cross ushered in the new covenant. 00:52:13.36\00:52:17.73 Christ - our new covenant - nailed the old covenant 00:52:17.93\00:52:22.77 to the cross. The Book of the Law 00:52:22.97\00:52:26.51 from Deuteronomy and all of its supplemental ceremonial 00:52:26.71\00:52:30.68 laws that are found in Leviticus... 00:52:30.85\00:52:33.35 If the Book of the Law, Deuter- onomy, is nailed to the cross, 00:52:33.55\00:52:36.22 then Leviticus, those ceremonial laws have no purpose. 00:52:36.42\00:52:40.76 But not the health law... because the health law 00:52:40.96\00:52:43.96 in Leviticus wasn't part of the ceremonial law. 00:52:44.13\00:52:46.73 So the Book of the Law was on the side of the ark. 00:52:46.93\00:52:50.37 The handwriting of require- ments written by Moses 00:52:50.57\00:52:53.84 on a scroll, this temporary covenant 00:52:54.04\00:52:58.54 that had the symbolic rituals, sacrifices, ceremonial Sabbaths, 00:52:58.84\00:53:03.81 food and drink offerings: all pointed to Christ. 00:53:04.01\00:53:07.28 They were a shadow of things to come, a witness against them. 00:53:07.68\00:53:11.55 So let's look at our subject text one more time. 00:53:11.95\00:53:14.79 Colossians chapter 2. We'll begin in verse 14. 00:53:15.49\00:53:19.29 But I want to show you in context because people 00:53:19.49\00:53:22.70 confuse this so much. We're going to read through verse 17. 00:53:22.90\00:53:26.53 Colossians 2:14-17. 00:53:26.94\00:53:30.31 Food and drink offerings 00:54:11.65\00:54:14.48 that were in the book of Deuteronomy. 00:54:14.68\00:54:17.62 Part of the ritual... the ceremonial ritual. 00:54:17.82\00:54:21.76 Annual Sabbaths that pointed to Christ 00:54:21.96\00:54:26.39 and the work that He would do. 00:54:26.59\00:54:28.36 Is there any question that the Book of the Law 00:54:28.56\00:54:30.97 was nailed to the cross? 00:54:31.17\00:54:32.93 Now let's look at a parallel passage. 00:54:33.34\00:54:35.40 My time is nearly done. 00:54:35.60\00:54:37.27 Christ fulfilled the prophetic symbolism: 00:55:16.48\00:55:20.88 the sacrificial and ceremonial system. 00:55:21.08\00:55:24.45 His death abolished the ceremonial law. 00:55:24.65\00:55:28.72 The question: What was nailed to the cross? 00:55:29.12\00:55:32.29 As our ultimate substitutionary sacrifice 00:55:32.69\00:55:37.03 bringing an old covenant to the end 00:55:37.23\00:55:39.87 Christ had humanity's sin imputed to Him. 00:55:40.07\00:55:44.04 He paid our penalty. 00:55:44.24\00:55:47.31 Look at I Peter chapter 2 and verse 24. 00:55:47.51\00:55:51.81 I Peter 2:24. 00:55:52.01\00:55:53.85 Our sin and the old covenant, 00:56:10.40\00:56:14.90 the sacrificial, ceremonial, and civil laws, 00:56:15.10\00:56:20.21 like "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" 00:56:20.41\00:56:23.88 were nailed to the cross 00:56:24.08\00:56:26.78 but not the Ten Commandments. 00:56:27.18\00:56:30.95 The Ten Commandments are the foundation of God's government! 00:56:31.42\00:56:37.46 They are the heart of the old and the new covenant. 00:56:37.66\00:56:41.13 Christ died for our sins. 00:56:41.33\00:56:42.90 And let's look at I John 3:4 00:56:43.10\00:56:45.70 if we want to know what sins Christ died for. 00:56:45.90\00:56:49.57 Christ's death proved... PROVED! 00:57:09.06\00:57:13.83 that the Ten Commandments are unchangeable. 00:57:14.00\00:57:17.50 It was not the commandments that were nailed to the cross. 00:57:18.00\00:57:22.27 Because if God planned to do away 00:57:22.67\00:57:26.88 with the Ten Commandments 00:57:27.08\00:57:28.78 then Jesus Christ died in vain. 00:57:28.98\00:57:33.55
