Thank you all. 00:01:02.26\00:01:04.99 Are you enjoying Camp Meeting? I think we ask you that 00:01:05.39\00:01:08.40 so often... but I have been so blessed. 00:01:08.60\00:01:12.07 The ministers that are ministering are opening up 00:01:12.47\00:01:15.94 new word for us and I believe it's changing all of us 00:01:16.14\00:01:19.71 into His image and His likeness. 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.61 Isn't that what we all want in the first place? 00:01:21.81\00:01:23.95 Well, we are honored this afternoon to have Shelley Quinn 00:01:24.15\00:01:27.18 to present her last message for this Camp Meeting. 00:01:27.38\00:01:30.89 And it's The Trial of Trials. 00:01:31.09\00:01:32.92 This morning what she presented was so beautiful. 00:01:33.22\00:01:36.62 And she's going to pick up there and take it further. 00:01:36.83\00:01:39.29 You know, Shelley has been with 3ABN now for almost 12 years 00:01:39.49\00:01:42.70 and I've known her for almost twelve years. 00:01:42.90\00:01:44.80 During that time you see people through the good times 00:01:45.20\00:01:48.40 and through the bad times. 00:01:48.60\00:01:50.27 And I just want you to know she's another one that's 00:01:50.47\00:01:53.07 the real deal. She's the same any time 00:01:53.31\00:01:56.71 whatever the circumstance is. The woman loves God 00:01:56.91\00:01:59.68 and she opens herself up to God and He blesses her. 00:01:59.88\00:02:03.59 And I want you to receive the word this afternoon 00:02:03.79\00:02:06.62 as she presents it. But right now I've got 00:02:06.86\00:02:09.59 Pastor John Lomacang and Celestine Barry 00:02:09.79\00:02:13.50 that are going to come out and they're going to sing 00:02:13.70\00:02:16.30 a beautiful song for us. It's Gentle Healer. 00:02:16.50\00:02:19.70 So as they come I want to encourage you 00:02:20.00\00:02:23.37 to open up your hearts to them. 00:02:23.57\00:02:25.17 This is another mighty man of God, and the more I get 00:02:25.37\00:02:29.38 to know about Celestine I realize she's got clean hands 00:02:29.58\00:02:32.68 and a pure heart. Isn't that what we look for? 00:02:32.88\00:02:35.15 Before you sing, pastor, let me pray. OK? 00:02:35.35\00:02:38.42 Holy Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus. 00:02:38.62\00:02:41.36 And Lord we praise you and thank You for Your presence. 00:02:41.56\00:02:44.03 Thank you, Lord, that You are here. We ask 00:02:44.43\00:02:46.86 that you would open up all of our hearts. 00:02:47.03\00:02:48.86 Father, open our hearts to receive Your Word. 00:02:49.06\00:02:51.53 And then, Father, as the Word is implanted 00:02:51.73\00:02:54.30 we pray that You would seal it that the enemy can't come and 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.44 steal not one word from our hearts 00:02:57.61\00:03:00.08 but Father it would produce a mighty bountiful crop 00:03:00.28\00:03:03.58 as we're conformed not to the image of this world 00:03:03.98\00:03:06.45 but into Your image and likeness. 00:03:06.65\00:03:08.42 And this is my prayer in Jesus' name. Amen! 00:03:08.62\00:03:13.25 The gentle Healer came Into our town today 00:03:21.56\00:03:27.40 He touched blind eyes And the darkness left to stay 00:03:28.50\00:03:34.04 But more than the blindness, 00:03:36.38\00:03:39.91 He took their sins away 00:03:40.22\00:03:43.05 The gentle Healer came 00:03:43.25\00:03:45.75 Into our town today 00:03:45.95\00:03:50.23 The gentle Healer came 00:03:54.00\00:03:56.80 into our town today 00:03:57.00\00:04:01.20 He spoke one word... that was all He had to say 00:04:01.60\00:04:07.58 And the one who had died 00:04:07.71\00:04:10.65 Just rose up straight away 00:04:10.85\00:04:15.98 The gentle Healer came 00:04:16.38\00:04:19.05 Into our town today 00:04:19.25\00:04:23.53 Oh, He seems like just An ordinary man 00:04:38.74\00:04:44.71 With dirty feet And rough but gentle hands 00:04:46.82\00:04:52.45 But the words He says Are hard to understand 00:04:54.02\00:04:59.49 Yet, He seems like just And ordinary man 00:05:00.96\00:05:06.94 The gentle Healer 00:05:11.57\00:05:14.31 He left our town today 00:05:14.51\00:05:18.75 I just looked around 00:05:19.25\00:05:21.75 And found He'd gone away 00:05:21.95\00:05:25.69 Some folks from town Who followed Him, 00:05:25.89\00:05:29.52 they say 00:05:30.13\00:05:34.20 The gentle Healer is 00:05:35.26\00:05:37.93 the Truth, the Light, the Way. 00:05:38.13\00:05:42.54 The gentle Healer is 00:05:42.74\00:05:45.81 the Truth, the Light, 00:05:46.01\00:05:49.31 the Way. 00:05:50.51\00:05:55.75 Amen! 00:05:56.65\00:05:58.25 Thank you Pastor John and Celestine. 00:05:58.65\00:06:01.42 Isn't that a beautiful song? And they sing so well together! 00:06:01.62\00:06:05.16 Well, you've had your physical food. Are you ready 00:06:05.36\00:06:07.76 for some more spiritual food? Amen! OK. 00:06:07.96\00:06:10.87 We are going to continue. In our last meeting we were 00:06:11.70\00:06:14.80 talking about the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:06:15.00\00:06:17.54 Now we're going to continue along the path 00:06:17.74\00:06:20.81 of Christ's passion. Let's pray. 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.65 Father, as we come in the name of Jesus 00:06:23.98\00:06:26.35 once again, Lord, we just lift before You 00:06:26.55\00:06:29.68 our hearts and ask that You would do a great work 00:06:29.88\00:06:33.49 in our hearts. As we receive Your Word 00:06:33.69\00:06:36.26 sanctify us by this Word, Lord. 00:06:36.46\00:06:38.69 Help us to know You better because to know You 00:06:38.89\00:06:41.93 and to know Your Son Jesus Christ 00:06:42.33\00:06:44.23 is eternal life. In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:06:44.43\00:06:47.10 I want to read to you a quote from Desire of Ages 00:06:47.50\00:06:50.61 page 83. Ellen White writes: 00:06:50.81\00:06:53.88 "It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour 00:06:54.08\00:06:57.11 each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. 00:06:57.31\00:07:00.25 We should take it point by point 00:07:00.65\00:07:03.22 and let the imagination grasp each scene... 00:07:03.42\00:07:07.32 especially the closing ones. " 00:07:07.52\00:07:09.76 And then she says we'll have three benefits from this. 00:07:09.96\00:07:12.26 "As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, " 00:07:12.66\00:07:15.86 first, "our confidence in Him will be more consistent; " 00:07:16.26\00:07:19.37 second, "our love will be quickened; " 00:07:19.57\00:07:21.87 and third, "we shall be more deeply imbued with His Spirit. " 00:07:22.07\00:07:27.28 As I have read and re-read 00:07:27.61\00:07:30.05 both the acts of what happened in the Garden of Gethsemane 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.52 and what happened during the trial of Christ 00:07:33.72\00:07:35.98 I have found these words to be true. 00:07:36.38\00:07:39.42 They've had a profound impact. 00:07:39.62\00:07:41.49 These stories have had a profound impact on me 00:07:42.12\00:07:45.09 as I have considered how and why Jesus had to suffer 00:07:45.29\00:07:50.77 so much before He was crucified. 00:07:50.97\00:07:54.70 Usually we think of His suffering as the crucifixion, 00:07:55.10\00:07:58.04 but He suffered this intense suffering. 00:07:58.44\00:08:02.38 And I realize that His excruciating pain and shame 00:08:02.78\00:08:07.05 before He went to the cross 00:08:07.45\00:08:09.65 is just another demonstration 00:08:09.85\00:08:12.29 of His incomprehensible love for us. 00:08:12.49\00:08:15.72 But we also see the judgment of God... 00:08:16.12\00:08:19.63 how severe the judgment of God and how real the judgment of God 00:08:19.83\00:08:24.17 on sin is. To the degree that we understand 00:08:24.37\00:08:28.94 the measure of Christ's suffering 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.21 is the degree that we will understand His love for us: 00:08:31.41\00:08:34.74 this extravagant love. 00:08:35.14\00:08:36.68 And to the degree we understand His extravagant love 00:08:36.88\00:08:40.75 is the degree that we will trust Him. 00:08:40.95\00:08:45.09 And you know what I have found? Just doing these studies 00:08:45.29\00:08:48.76 and, as Ellen White said, con- templating on them over and over 00:08:48.96\00:08:52.69 has truly helped me lose all doubt 00:08:52.89\00:08:58.10 in anything that God might do. 00:08:58.30\00:09:00.27 We've already considered His intense suffering in the 00:09:00.67\00:09:04.51 Garden of Gethsemane. Now we're going to consider 00:09:04.71\00:09:07.41 His suffering after His arrest in the two phases of His trial. 00:09:07.61\00:09:11.45 First... There were two different stages. 00:09:12.38\00:09:15.58 First He went before the Jewish religious courts. 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.69 He appeared briefly before Annas, then He was shuffled off 00:09:19.89\00:09:23.46 to Caiaphas' house, and then before the Sanhedrin. 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.49 Now the Sanhedrin was like I would call it the Supreme 00:09:26.93\00:09:31.37 Court. It was the ruling council of the Jews. 00:09:31.57\00:09:34.34 There were 71 members in the Sanhedrin 00:09:34.54\00:09:36.81 and it only took 23 for a quorum. 00:09:37.01\00:09:39.94 But this was made up... The Sanhedrin was Sadducees, 00:09:40.38\00:09:43.21 Pharisees, the scribes and then the elders - the lay people. 00:09:43.45\00:09:48.05 And what they did... The Sanhedrin was presided over 00:09:48.25\00:09:52.02 by the high priest. And what they did was to 00:09:52.22\00:09:56.56 coerce Jesus to admit that He was the Son of God 00:09:56.76\00:10:00.40 and then they charged Him with blasphemy 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.20 which was a capital offence in the Jewish world. 00:10:03.43\00:10:06.43 And because... You know, the Sanhedrin had 00:10:06.94\00:10:09.60 considerable authority. But about 20 years before 00:10:09.80\00:10:13.48 Jesus' trial the Romans had passed a law that limited 00:10:13.68\00:10:17.81 the Sanhedrin in their ability to carry out a death execution. 00:10:18.01\00:10:22.38 So they were forced to take Him to the Roman court. 00:10:22.58\00:10:25.02 So He goes from the Jewish religious court 00:10:25.42\00:10:29.46 to the stage of the Roman political court. 00:10:29.66\00:10:32.59 And He appears first before Pilate, of course, who was 00:10:32.79\00:10:36.33 the Roman governor. And they charged Him. 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.67 There was trumped up charges about treason against Rome. 00:10:38.87\00:10:42.07 Pilate sends Him to Herod Antipas 00:10:42.47\00:10:45.34 and Antipas sends Him back... Herod sends Him back to Pilate. 00:10:45.54\00:10:49.44 So please open your Bibles to John chapter 18. 00:10:49.64\00:10:53.45 John chapter 18. I hope you have your Bibles today. 00:10:53.65\00:10:57.55 All four gospels 00:10:57.75\00:10:59.69 talk about the trial of Jesus. 00:11:00.79\00:11:05.76 But the different authors emphasize different events. 00:11:06.26\00:11:11.70 They have different perspec- tives, and what I have found 00:11:11.90\00:11:15.47 as I harmonized all of this and put it together 00:11:15.67\00:11:18.24 there is more written about the trial of Jesus 00:11:18.64\00:11:21.38 than about any other event in the life of Jesus. 00:11:21.78\00:11:24.58 And I have gone round and round with how am I going to 00:11:24.78\00:11:26.58 present this to you. Should I just get up here 00:11:26.78\00:11:28.65 and tell you the story? But if I do that 00:11:28.85\00:11:31.52 you won't be able to do what I've done 00:11:31.72\00:11:33.92 when you go home: to read and re-read 00:11:34.12\00:11:36.32 and consider this. So today what we're going to do 00:11:36.52\00:11:39.49 is read. And we're going to be flipping back and forth 00:11:39.69\00:11:42.20 in all four gospels. 00:11:42.40\00:11:44.57 And we're going to read as it were the transcript 00:11:44.77\00:11:49.94 of Jesus' trial. So we're going to have to go rather rapidly, 00:11:50.14\00:11:54.38 but... 'cause there's a lot to read. 00:11:54.58\00:11:57.65 Before we start let me tell you this: 00:11:57.85\00:11:59.41 the procedures - the proceedings - 00:11:59.95\00:12:04.52 before the Jewish court were all illegal. 00:12:04.72\00:12:07.79 They broke every law of the Sanhedrin. 00:12:08.19\00:12:12.83 First of all, no trial was to be held during a feast day 00:12:13.23\00:12:16.83 or at night. And Jesus' was held before sunrise... His trial 00:12:17.03\00:12:20.50 was before sunrise on a feast day. 00:12:20.70\00:12:23.20 The accused was supposed to be given legal counsel... 00:12:23.61\00:12:27.24 a defense counsel. He was given none. 00:12:27.44\00:12:29.38 The accused was not supposed to be asked a self-incriminating 00:12:29.58\00:12:32.95 question. But Caiaphas made Him under oath 00:12:33.15\00:12:38.22 admit that He was the Son of God. 00:12:38.42\00:12:42.42 So each member of the Sanhedrin was supposed to be an impartial 00:12:42.82\00:12:46.96 judge. They were supposed to vote individually. 00:12:47.13\00:12:49.26 But what we are going to see is that Jesus was convicted 00:12:49.46\00:12:53.80 by an enthusiastic loud group approval. 00:12:54.00\00:12:57.91 And in death cases there was supposed to be 00:12:58.11\00:13:00.68 a full night that passed before the sentence was carried out. 00:13:00.88\00:13:04.41 But they are going to make certain that He gets crucified 00:13:04.61\00:13:06.92 on the same day. So for you note takers 00:13:07.12\00:13:09.52 just jot this down. Our first segment is John 18 00:13:09.72\00:13:13.49 verses 12 through 14 and verses 19 to 24. 00:13:13.69\00:13:18.96 John 18:12-14 and 19-24. 00:13:19.36\00:13:23.23 This is the first phase of the Jewish trial: 00:13:23.43\00:13:25.53 the informal interrogation before Annas 00:13:25.73\00:13:28.60 who was the previous high priest. 00:13:28.80\00:13:30.57 John 18:12: "Then the detachment of troops 00:13:30.77\00:13:32.97 and the captains and the officers of the Jews 00:13:33.17\00:13:35.21 arrested Jesus and bound Him. And they led Him away 00:13:35.41\00:13:37.85 to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas 00:13:38.05\00:13:41.32 who was the high priest that year. 00:13:41.52\00:13:43.02 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews 00:13:43.45\00:13:45.75 that it was expedient that one Man should die 00:13:45.95\00:13:49.09 for the people. " And John earlier in his gospel said 00:13:49.29\00:13:52.39 he didn't do that under his own authority 00:13:52.59\00:13:54.96 but as high priest he prophesied 00:13:55.16\00:13:58.13 that one would die for the Jewish nation 00:13:58.33\00:14:01.27 as well as for all of God's children. 00:14:01.47\00:14:04.84 So now skip down to verse 19. John 18:19: 00:14:05.04\00:14:09.41 "The high priest... " speaking of Annas... "then asked Jesus 00:14:09.61\00:14:13.85 about His disciples and His doctrine. " 00:14:14.05\00:14:16.32 He wasn't interested in learning; he was interested 00:14:16.52\00:14:18.99 in incriminating. Caiaphas, or Annas rather, had been the high 00:14:19.19\00:14:22.82 priest from AD 6 to the year AD 15. 00:14:23.02\00:14:27.40 And according to the Mishnah the Jews considered 00:14:27.60\00:14:30.93 the high priesthood as an office for life. 00:14:31.10\00:14:35.10 So once you've been high priest, even though you retired, 00:14:35.40\00:14:38.64 you are still considered high priest. 00:14:38.84\00:14:41.14 And Annas was the most influential member 00:14:41.34\00:14:44.68 of the Sanhedrin. So verse 20: 00:14:44.88\00:14:48.18 "Jesus answered him and said: 00:14:48.38\00:14:50.95 'I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues 00:14:51.15\00:14:54.36 and in the temple where the Jews always met 00:14:54.56\00:14:56.26 and in secret I have said nothing. ' " 00:14:56.46\00:14:58.83 "Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me 00:14:59.03\00:15:02.96 what I said to them. Indeed, they know what I said. " 00:15:03.16\00:15:06.17 "And when He had said these things, one of the officers 00:15:06.37\00:15:08.57 who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand 00:15:08.77\00:15:12.44 saying: 'Do You answer the high priest like that? ' 00:15:12.64\00:15:15.11 Jesus answered him: 'If I have spoken evil 00:15:15.51\00:15:18.58 bear witness of the evil. 00:15:18.78\00:15:20.12 But if well, why do you strike Me? ' 00:15:20.22\00:15:22.75 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. " 00:15:23.05\00:15:28.16 Now keep your finger in John 18 'cause we're coming back there. 00:15:28.36\00:15:30.96 But turn to Matthew chapter 26. 00:15:31.16\00:15:34.83 Matthew chapter 26. 00:15:35.20\00:15:37.70 And again if you're taking notes so you can follow this from home 00:15:38.30\00:15:42.54 we're going to look at verses 57 through 68. 00:15:42.94\00:15:47.68 Matthew 26:57-68. 00:15:47.88\00:15:51.65 We're going to look now at what happened at Caiaphas' house 00:15:51.85\00:15:56.65 who... Caiaphas was high priest at the time of this trial. 00:15:56.85\00:16:01.39 He'd been high priest for 18... He was actually high priest for 00:16:01.79\00:16:04.73 18 years... which is the longest 00:16:04.93\00:16:07.96 of any other first-century high priest. 00:16:08.16\00:16:11.17 So verse 57... Matthew 26:57: 00:16:11.57\00:16:14.24 "And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away 00:16:14.40\00:16:17.51 to Caiaphas the high priest where the scribes and the 00:16:17.71\00:16:19.74 elders were assembled. But Peter followed Him at a 00:16:19.94\00:16:22.38 distance to the high priest's courtyard 00:16:22.58\00:16:24.18 and he went in and sat with the servants to see the end. 00:16:24.38\00:16:27.42 Now when the chief priest, the elders, and all the council 00:16:27.68\00:16:30.79 sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death... " 00:16:30.99\00:16:34.49 They're working frantically to coach witnesses... 00:16:34.69\00:16:38.33 but they found none. Even though many false witnesses 00:16:38.53\00:16:41.93 came forward they found none 00:16:42.13\00:16:44.13 because the testimony of these carefully-prepared witnesses 00:16:44.30\00:16:47.60 just didn't agree. "And so they said: 'This fellow 00:16:47.77\00:16:52.61 said: I am able to destroy the temple of God 00:16:52.81\00:16:55.98 and build it in three days. ' " 00:16:56.18\00:16:58.05 Now of course we know in John 2:19 Jesus said: 00:16:58.25\00:17:01.15 "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. " 00:17:01.35\00:17:05.82 What was He referring to? 00:17:06.12\00:17:07.69 Verse 21 said it was His body. 00:17:07.82\00:17:09.86 But in II Samuel chapter 7 00:17:10.06\00:17:12.93 and Zechariah chapter 6 both of those accounts 00:17:13.13\00:17:16.97 portray the Messiah as One who will build the temple. 00:17:17.17\00:17:21.87 So just this accusation... Caiaphas is taking this 00:17:22.07\00:17:25.87 as a calm to the Messiahship. 00:17:26.07\00:17:28.54 So verse 62: "And the high priest arose 00:17:28.74\00:17:31.81 and said to Him: 'Do you answer nothing? 00:17:32.01\00:17:34.62 What is it these men testify against You? ' 00:17:34.82\00:17:37.42 But Jesus kept silent, and the high priest answered 00:17:37.62\00:17:40.89 and said to Him: 'I put You under oath by the Living God. 00:17:41.09\00:17:46.63 Tell us if You are Christ the Son of God. ' " 00:17:46.83\00:17:50.23 He's going to coerce the com- mission... admission from Him. 00:17:50.43\00:17:54.20 "Jesus said to him: 'It is as you said. 00:17:54.57\00:17:58.04 Nevertheless I say to you: hereafter you will see the 00:17:58.24\00:18:01.68 Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the power and coming 00:18:01.88\00:18:05.35 on the clouds of heaven... ' " Knowing that this affirmation 00:18:05.55\00:18:10.35 would lead to death Jesus affirms His divine origin. 00:18:10.65\00:18:16.39 And He's drawing here from what? Daniel 7 and verse 13 00:18:16.59\00:18:20.13 where He identifies Himself as the Son of Man who will 00:18:20.33\00:18:23.23 come on the clouds of glory. 00:18:23.47\00:18:25.73 He is a King of heavenly origin. 00:18:25.93\00:18:28.27 He is a co-equal to God 00:18:28.67\00:18:30.64 and He will reign over an eternal kingdom. 00:18:30.84\00:18:33.24 Look at verse 65. 00:18:34.08\00:18:35.94 This is Caiaphas' reaction. 00:18:36.14\00:18:38.58 "Then the high priest tore his clothes saying: 00:18:38.78\00:18:41.98 'He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have 00:18:42.18\00:18:45.89 of witnesses? Look! Now you have heard this blasphemy. ' " 00:18:46.09\00:18:50.13 Tearing the clothes was a common expression of grief 00:18:50.33\00:18:54.73 in the Jewish culture. 00:18:54.93\00:18:58.70 It was customary to respond to blasphemy this way, but 00:18:59.40\00:19:03.87 it's interesting. In Leviticus 21:10 the high priest 00:19:04.07\00:19:08.11 was prohibited from tearing his garments 00:19:08.31\00:19:11.51 because they were sacred. 00:19:11.71\00:19:14.15 But Caiaphas was so enraged at this 00:19:14.35\00:19:18.59 that he committed this act of sacreligion. 00:19:18.79\00:19:22.19 And verse 66 he continues: 00:19:22.59\00:19:24.79 "What do you think? " 00:19:24.99\00:19:26.73 "And then they all answered and said: 00:19:27.13\00:19:29.13 'He is deserving of death! ' 00:19:29.33\00:19:31.30 Then they spat on Him and they beat Him. " 00:19:31.50\00:19:34.14 Mark says they blindfolded Him 00:19:34.27\00:19:35.87 and others struck Him with the palms of their hands 00:19:36.07\00:19:37.77 saying: "Prophesy to us, Christ. 00:19:37.97\00:19:40.58 Who is the one who struck You? " 00:19:40.78\00:19:43.28 The Sanhedrin found Him guilty 00:19:43.68\00:19:47.88 but they're not yet sentencing Him. 00:19:48.08\00:19:50.52 But some members of the court went wild 00:19:50.72\00:19:53.19 and they're spitting on Him and they're slapping Him. 00:19:53.39\00:19:56.49 And then they dismiss with a plan to reconvene 00:19:56.93\00:20:01.53 shortly after dawn. And they hand Him over to the 00:20:01.73\00:20:06.47 troop of Roman soldiers that had accompanied them 00:20:06.70\00:20:10.21 to the Garden of Gethsemane to arrest Him. 00:20:10.41\00:20:12.81 Now because He was sentenced to death 00:20:13.21\00:20:16.24 these Roman soldiers felt pretty much at ease. 00:20:16.44\00:20:18.45 They could do whatever they wanted with this prisoner. 00:20:18.65\00:20:21.02 And they probably played 00:20:21.42\00:20:24.42 a very common Roman game called hot hand. 00:20:24.62\00:20:28.42 What the Roman soldiers would do 00:20:28.62\00:20:30.93 is they would blindfold the prisoner. And this is... 00:20:31.13\00:20:33.66 We saw that Mark said that He was blindfolded. 00:20:33.86\00:20:36.20 Then they would of all the troops 00:20:36.60\00:20:39.70 there would only be one that would stand out. 00:20:39.90\00:20:42.17 All the rest of them would double up their fists 00:20:42.37\00:20:46.21 and sock the prisoner. 00:20:46.41\00:20:48.24 Then they'd remove his blindfold 00:20:48.64\00:20:50.91 and they'd all be back together and they'd say: "Tell us: 00:20:51.11\00:20:54.28 which one of us did not strike you? " 00:20:54.48\00:20:57.42 So we are given reason to believe that this is exactly 00:20:57.79\00:21:02.12 what happened. In Luke 22 in his account 00:21:02.32\00:21:05.13 the Greek word that he uses is that they beat Jesus. 00:21:05.33\00:21:10.33 "He was bruised for our iniquities. " 00:21:10.73\00:21:14.64 Now keep your finger there in Matthew 26 00:21:15.04\00:21:18.17 and let's flip back to John 18. 00:21:18.57\00:21:22.04 John 18. And again for you note takers 00:21:23.41\00:21:27.08 this is John 18 verses 15 through 18. 00:21:27.28\00:21:31.25 We're going to look at the record of Peter's denial 00:21:31.65\00:21:34.39 as he observed these circus-like proceedings. 00:21:34.59\00:21:37.83 John 18 and verse 15. 00:21:38.33\00:21:41.26 "And Simon Peter followed Jesus at a distance and so did 00:21:41.46\00:21:44.43 another disciple. " This would be John, who's writing. 00:21:44.63\00:21:47.27 "Now that disciple was known to the high priest 00:21:47.57\00:21:49.74 and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 00:21:49.94\00:21:52.54 But Peter stood at the door outside. 00:21:52.74\00:21:55.64 Then the other disciple... " young John... who was known 00:21:55.94\00:21:58.31 to the high priest "went out and spoke to her 00:21:58.51\00:22:00.92 who kept the door and brought Peter in. 00:22:01.08\00:22:03.49 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter: 00:22:03.69\00:22:06.25 'You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you? ' 00:22:06.65\00:22:10.53 And he said: 'I am not! ' " 00:22:10.83\00:22:13.80 That's his first denial. 00:22:14.00\00:22:15.70 "Now the servants and the officers who had made a fire 00:22:15.90\00:22:18.43 of coal stood there, for it was cold and they warmed themselves. 00:22:18.63\00:22:22.00 And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. " 00:22:22.20\00:22:25.34 Peter joined the crowd. He was attempting to blend in. 00:22:25.54\00:22:29.64 He was at a crossroad between courage and compromise. 00:22:30.05\00:22:34.12 And unfortunately he failed to die to self 00:22:34.45\00:22:37.55 and he cowardly denied Jesus. 00:22:37.75\00:22:39.72 You know, many of us succumb to the pressure 00:22:39.92\00:22:43.83 of a crowd of unbelievers. 00:22:44.03\00:22:45.79 We falter and we lose our testimony. 00:22:46.19\00:22:47.96 If we do not speak boldly we lose our testimony 00:22:48.13\00:22:52.63 because of fear. Either we're going to deny self 00:22:52.83\00:22:56.20 or we're going to deny Christ. 00:22:56.64\00:22:58.47 Now return to Matthew 26. Just flip back there to 00:22:58.87\00:23:03.21 Matthew 26. Again for you note takers 00:23:03.45\00:23:07.02 this is verses 71 through 75. 00:23:07.32\00:23:09.92 Matthew 26:71-75 tells us the rest of the story 00:23:10.32\00:23:15.72 of Peter's total humiliation. 00:23:15.92\00:23:17.96 Verse 71: "And when he had gone out to the gate 00:23:18.16\00:23:21.16 another girl saw him. " According to John's gospel 00:23:21.36\00:23:24.77 this was a relative of Malchus who'd had his ear cut off 00:23:24.97\00:23:29.47 by Peter with the sword in the garden. 00:23:29.67\00:23:32.11 And she recognized him from the garden. 00:23:32.31\00:23:34.28 "So she said to those who were there: 'This fellow also was 00:23:34.48\00:23:38.75 with Jesus of Nazareth. ' But again he denied it 00:23:38.95\00:23:43.75 with an oath: 00:23:43.95\00:23:47.16 'I do not know the Man. ' " 00:23:47.36\00:23:50.19 Peter was so intimidated by the fear of persecution 00:23:50.39\00:23:56.26 and ridicule... the threat of persecution... 00:23:56.70\00:24:01.30 that he actually took an oath. And what that is saying 00:24:01.50\00:24:04.74 is that he was saying: "I swear by God 00:24:04.94\00:24:08.41 I do not know the Man. " 00:24:08.61\00:24:11.38 This is his second denial. 00:24:11.78\00:24:13.75 "And a little later... " verse 73... 00:24:13.95\00:24:16.55 "A little later those who stood by came up and said 00:24:16.79\00:24:20.26 to Peter: 'Surely you also are one of them 00:24:20.46\00:24:24.23 for your speech betrays you. ' " 00:24:24.43\00:24:25.79 "You've got a Galilean accent! " 00:24:25.99\00:24:27.60 "Then he began to curse and swear saying: 00:24:27.76\00:24:30.63 'I do not know the Man! ' " 00:24:30.83\00:24:32.73 This is his third denial. 00:24:32.93\00:24:35.07 "And immediately a rooster crowed. " 00:24:35.47\00:24:38.67 Now here Luke's account says 00:24:39.07\00:24:42.38 "And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. " 00:24:42.58\00:24:46.68 Peter had witnessed what was going on with Jesus. 00:24:47.48\00:24:51.55 How He was being beaten and socked 00:24:51.95\00:24:55.36 and how He'd been spat upon 00:24:55.56\00:24:57.49 and how He'd been ridiculed. 00:24:57.89\00:24:59.66 Peter, the man who gave up all to follow Jesus, 00:25:00.13\00:25:03.87 the man who was quick to obey 00:25:04.07\00:25:06.63 when he'd been fishing all night and Jesus said: 00:25:06.84\00:25:09.57 "Hey go out into the deep and cast your nets over on 00:25:09.77\00:25:12.81 this side" he was quick to obey. 00:25:13.01\00:25:15.08 He was a man of great faith. He had walked on water 00:25:15.28\00:25:17.98 at Christ's bidding. He was a man of spiritual insight. 00:25:18.18\00:25:21.65 He said: "Thou art the Christ. " 00:25:21.85\00:25:23.99 Yet he was a man of self will and he was still self-confident. 00:25:24.19\00:25:30.23 And in his own confidence he committed this terrible sin 00:25:30.63\00:25:34.40 of denial. What is the lesson that we should learn from this? 00:25:34.60\00:25:38.77 "Take heed lest ye think ye stand you fall. " 00:25:39.07\00:25:42.84 So... exhausted and bruised from the beating 00:25:43.24\00:25:46.74 with His clothes torn and tattered 00:25:47.14\00:25:51.15 Jesus lifts His head and He looks at Peter. 00:25:51.55\00:25:55.52 He looks at Peter and gives him this sympathetic look 00:25:55.92\00:26:01.29 of intense profound love. 00:26:01.69\00:26:05.06 And when Peter saw the look of Jesus' face 00:26:05.46\00:26:10.30 he was heartbroken. 00:26:10.70\00:26:13.27 He realized what he had done and look at what verse 75 says: 00:26:13.47\00:26:17.74 And Peter remembered the words of Jesus who had said to him: 00:26:18.14\00:26:22.61 'Before the rooster crows you will deny Me three times. ' 00:26:22.81\00:26:26.28 So he went out and wept bitterly. " 00:26:26.72\00:26:29.45 Just hours before at the Last Supper 00:26:29.85\00:26:32.29 Peter was warned by Christ that he would deny Him. 00:26:32.49\00:26:36.93 And in his usual brash zeal he had said: 00:26:37.33\00:26:40.70 "I will not deny You if I have to die with You! 00:26:41.26\00:26:45.67 You can count on me. " 00:26:45.87\00:26:47.67 But Jesus had prayed for Peter 00:26:48.07\00:26:51.67 and now the power of that prayer was beginning to work 00:26:51.87\00:26:57.21 in Peter's heart and it moved Peter 00:26:57.41\00:27:01.05 to restore him to loyalty. 00:27:01.25\00:27:03.92 So broken and full of anguish he goes out. 00:27:04.12\00:27:06.92 He gets alone with God and he repents. 00:27:07.12\00:27:10.59 Now turn to Luke chapter 22. 00:27:11.63\00:27:15.36 Luke chapter 22. 00:27:15.76\00:27:17.70 For you note takers, we're going to look at 00:27:18.97\00:27:21.80 Luke 22:66-71. 00:27:22.00\00:27:26.04 Luke 22 verses 66 through 71. 00:27:26.44\00:27:29.31 This is His formal trial before the Sanhedrin. 00:27:29.91\00:27:34.35 Caiaphas had called a hastily-called meeting: 00:27:35.02\00:27:40.26 an illegal night session of the Sanhedrin. 00:27:40.46\00:27:42.59 So now it's the dawn of day. He re-assembles the Sanhedrin 00:27:42.89\00:27:46.33 to formulate the charges against Jesus. 00:27:46.63\00:27:49.10 So Luke 22 and verse 66: 00:27:49.30\00:27:51.60 "As soon as it was day the elders of the people 00:27:51.90\00:27:54.30 both chief priests and scribes came together and led Him 00:27:54.50\00:27:56.87 into their council saying: 'If You are the Christ, tell us. ' 00:27:57.07\00:28:00.91 But He said to them: 'If I tell you 00:28:01.28\00:28:04.85 you will by no means believe. ' " 00:28:05.05\00:28:07.95 Once again, they expected a militant Messiah... 00:28:08.35\00:28:12.32 one who would deliver them physically, deliver them 00:28:12.52\00:28:17.09 materially. They did not expect the suffering servant 00:28:17.29\00:28:21.90 who was going to die as their substitute 00:28:22.10\00:28:26.00 to deliver them spiritually. 00:28:26.20\00:28:28.54 Do you remember what we said in the last hour? 00:28:28.74\00:28:30.81 Someone has said preconceived opinions 00:28:31.17\00:28:35.04 effectively insulate the mind against truth. 00:28:35.24\00:28:40.82 In verse 68 Jesus says: 00:28:41.68\00:28:44.85 "And if I ask you you will by no means answer Me 00:28:45.05\00:28:49.36 or let Me go. " He knew that they were unwilling 00:28:49.56\00:28:52.83 to let go of man-made religious practices. 00:28:53.03\00:28:57.67 These were abusive bullies. 00:28:57.87\00:29:00.87 And you know something? Bullies are always insecure individuals. 00:29:01.07\00:29:06.54 Bullies are afraid of losing their influence, 00:29:07.21\00:29:12.68 their power. And they're afraid of being powerless themselves. 00:29:12.88\00:29:16.62 And that's what was going on here. Verse 69: 00:29:16.82\00:29:18.99 "Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand 00:29:19.39\00:29:22.06 of the power of God. " "Then they all said: 00:29:22.26\00:29:25.49 'Are You then the Son of God? ' " 00:29:25.69\00:29:27.60 And He says to them: "You rightly say that I am. " 00:29:27.96\00:29:30.67 The Sanhedrin asked 2 questions: 00:29:31.00\00:29:33.00 "Are You the Christ? " "Are You the Son of God? " 00:29:33.20\00:29:36.07 They wanted to catch Him in clear-cut blasphemy. 00:29:36.27\00:29:40.71 And He claimed Sonship. He claimed that He would not 00:29:40.91\00:29:44.65 remain dead. He said: "You'll see Me at the right hand 00:29:44.85\00:29:47.65 of the throne of the Father. Even if you kill Me 00:29:47.85\00:29:50.79 you're going to see Me again. " 00:29:50.99\00:29:52.32 And He claimed exaltation, and their voices break forth 00:29:52.49\00:29:57.66 in an outrage. Verse 71: 00:29:57.86\00:29:59.76 "And they said: 'What further testimony do we need 00:30:00.00\00:30:03.37 for we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth. ' " 00:30:03.57\00:30:08.20 In other words: "You are guilty of blasphemy. 00:30:08.40\00:30:12.61 You are sentenced unto death. " 00:30:12.81\00:30:14.98 Now keep a finger here in Luke 00:30:15.38\00:30:17.51 and we're going to turn to John 18. 00:30:17.68\00:30:21.98 And I think I've got time to do this. While you're turning 00:30:22.38\00:30:24.89 I just want to share what was going on 00:30:25.09\00:30:29.99 with Judas. We saw what happened with Peter. 00:30:30.19\00:30:33.36 But when Judas saw that they had condemned Him 00:30:33.76\00:30:38.23 for blasphemy and he knew that they had plotted against Him 00:30:38.43\00:30:42.70 to put Him to death, Judas returns to the temple 00:30:42.90\00:30:46.84 priests and he says: "Hey, I've betrayed innocent blood. " 00:30:47.04\00:30:51.41 And there was a divine curse in Deuteronomy and I believe 00:30:51.81\00:30:55.58 27:25 against anyone 00:30:55.78\00:30:58.75 who would betray innocent blood. 00:30:58.95\00:31:03.43 So he says: "I've betrayed innocent blood. " 00:31:03.83\00:31:06.53 And he's trying to give them their 30 shekels back. 00:31:06.73\00:31:08.90 They won't even take it. 00:31:09.20\00:31:10.63 You know what they said? "What is that to us? " 00:31:10.83\00:31:13.00 Which shows they knew that Jesus was innocent. 00:31:13.20\00:31:15.57 But they said: "What is that to us? " 00:31:15.77\00:31:17.51 And so they told him: "You see to it. " 00:31:17.91\00:31:20.84 So their glib response proves 00:31:21.21\00:31:24.11 that they realized His innocence. 00:31:24.28\00:31:26.05 So Judas throws the 30 pieces down 00:31:26.25\00:31:29.45 in the temple and he is remorseful... 00:31:29.65\00:31:34.12 he's trying to make restitution. But unlike Peter 00:31:34.29\00:31:37.89 he doesn't repent. And gripped by guilt, he goes 00:31:38.09\00:31:41.63 out and he hangs himself. 00:31:41.83\00:31:43.60 And then Luke tells us in Acts 1:18 the rest of his story. 00:31:43.80\00:31:48.50 As he hung there in the hot sun 00:31:48.90\00:31:52.91 the bacteria of decay 00:31:53.31\00:31:56.24 caused his body to begin bloating up. 00:31:56.44\00:31:59.15 He was like an over-inflated balloon. 00:31:59.35\00:32:01.92 So when either the branch or the rope on which he 00:32:02.12\00:32:06.39 hung broke, he fell forward and his body split open. 00:32:06.59\00:32:11.49 So that's the difference between just being sorry for your sin 00:32:11.69\00:32:16.56 and repenting. So we should be at John 18. 00:32:16.77\00:32:21.67 We're going to consider verses 28 through 38. 00:32:21.87\00:32:25.91 The Sanhedrin has found Him guilty. 00:32:26.31\00:32:28.91 Now they're going to take Him before Pontius Pilate. 00:32:29.11\00:32:31.21 He's the Roman governor. He was actually the governor 00:32:31.41\00:32:34.32 from AD 26 to AD 36. 00:32:34.52\00:32:36.75 So verse 28: "Then they, the whole multitude 00:32:37.72\00:32:41.12 led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. " 00:32:41.32\00:32:43.73 This was the official residence of the Roman governor 00:32:43.93\00:32:47.36 and it was most likely in Herod's palace 00:32:47.56\00:32:50.63 that was on the western wall of the temple. 00:32:50.83\00:32:53.47 "And it was early morning... " early morning... 00:32:54.17\00:32:57.61 "but they themselves did not go into the Praetorium 00:32:58.01\00:33:01.48 lest they should be defiled 00:33:01.68\00:33:03.65 but that they might eat the Passover. " 00:33:03.85\00:33:06.15 This was a Gentile judgment hall, and if they went in 00:33:06.35\00:33:09.65 they'd be ceremonially unclean. 00:33:09.85\00:33:11.39 And when it's referring to eating the Passover 00:33:11.59\00:33:13.86 most likely it's referring to the feast of unleavened bread 00:33:14.06\00:33:17.53 that lasted for seven days. 00:33:17.69\00:33:20.00 But it's soon after sunrise. 00:33:20.20\00:33:23.00 So here Pilate is roused from a deep sleep 00:33:23.43\00:33:27.40 and he doesn't realize that he is waking up 00:33:27.60\00:33:32.17 to the greatest drama in history. 00:33:32.37\00:33:35.18 Verse 29: "Pilate then went out to them. " 00:33:35.58\00:33:39.31 I can just see him rubbing the sleep from his eyes. 00:33:39.51\00:33:42.15 "And he said: 'What accusation do you bring 00:33:42.55\00:33:46.59 against this Man? ' 00:33:46.82\00:33:48.16 They answered and said to him: 'If He were not an evil-doer 00:33:48.19\00:33:51.46 we would not have delivered Him up to you. ' " 00:33:51.66\00:33:53.46 Full of pride, aren't they? 00:33:53.96\00:33:55.63 Pilate didn't want to get involved in the internal affairs 00:33:56.03\00:34:00.74 of the Jews, so he says in verse 31: 00:34:00.94\00:34:04.41 "You take Him and judge Him according to your law. " 00:34:04.81\00:34:08.44 "Therefore the Jews said to him: 'It is not lawful for us to 00:34:08.64\00:34:11.45 put anyone to death' that the saying of Jesus might be 00:34:11.65\00:34:15.55 fulfilled which He spoke signifying by what death 00:34:15.75\00:34:20.46 He would die. " Well... what does that mean? 00:34:20.66\00:34:24.46 There's no other - as you're harmonizing this - 00:34:25.29\00:34:28.80 there's no other gospel that's going to explain it. 00:34:29.00\00:34:32.40 We've got to read between the lines. 00:34:32.60\00:34:35.24 It's signifying the death by which He would die. 00:34:36.10\00:34:39.31 You see, the Jews, although their authority had been 00:34:40.04\00:34:44.91 limited, they still stoned, didn't they, 00:34:45.11\00:34:49.45 for blasphemy. They stoned Stephen for blasphemy. 00:34:49.65\00:34:52.19 So they didn't strictly adhere to the Roman law. 00:34:52.39\00:34:55.36 But they were not wanting Jesus to be stoned. 00:34:55.56\00:35:00.53 They were seeking crucifixion. 00:35:00.83\00:35:04.20 Crucifixion horrified the Jews 00:35:04.40\00:35:07.04 because it was the same as hanging on a tree... 00:35:07.44\00:35:10.71 which carried God's curse. 00:35:10.91\00:35:13.98 And that's what they wanted for Jesus. 00:35:14.18\00:35:16.75 Now here the gospel of Luke 00:35:17.15\00:35:19.45 adds that they were hurling accusations of treason 00:35:19.65\00:35:23.05 against the Roman state saying: "We found this fellow 00:35:23.25\00:35:25.72 perverting the nation and forbidding to pay taxes 00:35:25.92\00:35:28.16 to Caesar saying that He Himself is Christ the King. ' " 00:35:28.36\00:35:31.93 But now let's continue. John 18:33: 00:35:32.13\00:35:34.93 "Then Pilate entered the Praetorium 00:35:35.30\00:35:38.07 and he called Jesus and said to Him: 00:35:38.47\00:35:40.94 'Are You the king of the Jews? ' 00:35:41.34\00:35:43.47 Jesus answered him: 'Are you speaking for yourself 00:35:43.87\00:35:46.78 about this or did others tell you this concerning Me? ' 00:35:46.98\00:35:49.54 Pilate answered: 'Am I a Jew? 00:35:49.94\00:35:52.41 Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You 00:35:52.61\00:35:55.18 to me. What have You done? ' 00:35:55.38\00:35:56.99 Jesus answered: 'My kingdom is not of this world. 00:35:57.39\00:36:01.46 If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would 00:36:01.86\00:36:04.16 fight so that I should not be delivered to the Jews. 00:36:04.36\00:36:07.23 But now My kingdom is not from here. ' " 00:36:07.60\00:36:10.87 He's saying: "I am a King, 00:36:11.07\00:36:13.64 but I rule over hearts... not territory. " 00:36:13.84\00:36:17.11 "Pilate therefore said to Him: 00:36:17.51\00:36:19.44 'Are you a King then? ' Jesus answered: 00:36:19.64\00:36:22.31 'You say rightly that I am a King. 00:36:22.51\00:36:25.01 For this cause I was born and for this cause I have come 00:36:25.21\00:36:28.28 into the world: that I should bear witness 00:36:28.48\00:36:30.92 to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth 00:36:31.12\00:36:33.76 here's My voice. ' " And then Pilate - 00:36:33.96\00:36:36.96 standing in the presence of truth incarnate - 00:36:37.16\00:36:41.30 Pilate says: "What is truth? " 00:36:41.70\00:36:44.93 He is just dismissing the relevance of truth. 00:36:45.13\00:36:50.61 You know, if we consider Matthew's account 00:36:51.21\00:36:53.54 of Christ standing before Pilate, 00:36:53.74\00:36:55.78 it's interesting. Matthew says Jesus did not answer 00:36:55.98\00:37:00.15 one charge that the chief priests and the elders 00:37:00.35\00:37:03.45 hurled against Him... not one word. 00:37:03.65\00:37:06.25 And Pilate marveled greatly because Pilate was used to 00:37:06.65\00:37:11.26 men saying with loud protestation: "I'm innocent! " 00:37:11.46\00:37:16.43 He was used to men trying to defend themselves 00:37:16.67\00:37:19.10 and it was confusing to him 00:37:19.30\00:37:20.97 to see a Man who seemed content to die. 00:37:21.17\00:37:24.47 was being fulfilled. 00:37:24.67\00:37:28.91 "He was oppressed and He was afflicted 00:37:29.21\00:37:32.05 yet He opened not His mouth. He was led as a lamb to the 00:37:32.25\00:37:35.15 slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent 00:37:35.35\00:37:38.45 so He opened not His mouth. " 00:37:38.65\00:37:42.22 Now flip back to Luke. 00:37:42.62\00:37:45.26 We're going to now consider Luke chapter 23 00:37:45.66\00:37:51.27 verses 4 through 17. 00:37:51.47\00:37:54.27 Luke 23:4-17. 00:37:54.67\00:37:57.21 This is when Pilate sends Jesus 00:37:57.41\00:38:01.24 to Herod Antipas. 00:38:01.44\00:38:03.71 Luke 23 and verse 4: 00:38:03.91\00:38:06.08 "So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd: 00:38:06.28\00:38:08.35 'I find no fault in this Man. ' 00:38:08.55\00:38:10.22 But they were the more fierce saying: 'He stirs up the people 00:38:10.42\00:38:12.82 teaching through all Judea beginning from Galilee 00:38:13.02\00:38:16.32 to this place. ' Now when Pilate heard of Galilee 00:38:16.52\00:38:20.53 he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon 00:38:20.73\00:38:24.27 as he knew that Jesus was 00:38:24.47\00:38:27.44 and he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, 00:38:27.64\00:38:30.81 he sent Him to Herod who was also in Jerusalem 00:38:31.01\00:38:34.98 at this time. " Now who is Herod? 00:38:35.18\00:38:37.71 He's the tetrarch of Galilee. 00:38:38.11\00:38:39.95 He's the one who murdered John the Baptist. 00:38:40.15\00:38:43.15 So verse 8: "Now when Herod saw Jesus 00:38:44.22\00:38:47.72 he was exceedingly glad for he had desired for a long time 00:38:47.92\00:38:52.73 to see Him because he had heard many things about Him. " 00:38:52.93\00:38:56.73 "He had heard many things about Him 00:38:57.13\00:38:59.17 and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. " 00:38:59.37\00:39:01.64 He wanted Jesus to entertain him in other words. 00:39:01.84\00:39:03.94 "Then he questioned Him with many words 00:39:04.34\00:39:06.91 but Jesus answered him nothing. " 00:39:07.31\00:39:10.08 Members of Herod's household were believers. 00:39:10.81\00:39:14.65 His personal steward Chuza was a believer, 00:39:15.05\00:39:18.99 and Chuza's wife Joanna was a believer. 00:39:19.39\00:39:22.79 They were supporters of Jesus. 00:39:22.99\00:39:24.93 You can find it in Luke 8 and verse 3. 00:39:25.13\00:39:27.50 And Manaen, who was brought up as Herod's foster brother, 00:39:27.93\00:39:32.67 was a believer. He was actually a teacher 00:39:32.87\00:39:35.70 in the early church. We find that in Acts 13 verse 1. 00:39:35.90\00:39:39.74 But their reports about Jesus 00:39:39.94\00:39:42.68 had no effect on Herod's unresponsive heart. 00:39:42.88\00:39:47.02 And Herod is the only man that Jesus did not answer. 00:39:47.22\00:39:51.52 Not one word. 00:39:51.72\00:39:53.66 He stood in dignified silence. 00:39:54.06\00:39:57.33 Herod had not listened to John the Baptist 00:39:57.69\00:40:01.96 so Jesus didn't waste any words on him. 00:40:02.16\00:40:04.27 So let's look at Luke 23:10. 00:40:04.90\00:40:07.14 "And the chief priests and the scribes stood and vehemently 00:40:07.34\00:40:10.37 accused Him. Then Herod with his men of war treated 00:40:10.57\00:40:13.11 Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a 00:40:13.34\00:40:15.41 gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate. 00:40:15.61\00:40:17.51 That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other 00:40:17.68\00:40:20.58 for previously they had been at enmity with each other. 00:40:20.78\00:40:23.49 Then Pilate when he had called together the chief priests, 00:40:23.69\00:40:26.52 the rulers, and the people said to them: 00:40:26.72\00:40:28.56 'You have brought this Man to me as One who misleads 00:40:28.96\00:40:31.49 the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, 00:40:31.69\00:40:34.13 I have found no fault in this Man 00:40:34.30\00:40:36.23 concerning those things of which you accuse Him. 00:40:36.43\00:40:38.80 Nor neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him 00:40:39.00\00:40:42.50 and indeed, nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. ' " 00:40:42.70\00:40:46.21 So now he's going to offer a compromise. 00:40:46.51\00:40:48.81 "I will therefore chastise Him and release Him 00:40:49.01\00:40:52.51 for... " verse 17 says: "it was necessary 00:40:52.71\00:40:57.22 for him to release one to them at the feast. " 00:40:57.42\00:41:02.42 This was a common practice. 00:41:02.62\00:41:04.23 So now let's look at Matthew 27. Again, note takers: 00:41:04.56\00:41:10.23 this is Matthew 27 verses 16 through 30. 00:41:10.43\00:41:14.27 Pilate is going to wash his hands of it. 00:41:15.17\00:41:18.84 Matthew 27... 00:41:19.51\00:41:21.74 we'll look at verses 16 through 30. 00:41:21.94\00:41:26.25 So Matthew 27:16: 00:41:27.18\00:41:29.85 "And at that time they had a notorious prisoner 00:41:30.05\00:41:32.79 called Barabbas. " He was notorious because he 00:41:32.99\00:41:35.12 had committed a murder in the uprising. 00:41:35.32\00:41:37.43 "Therefore when they had gathered together Pilate said 00:41:37.63\00:41:40.26 to them: 'Whom do you want me to release to you? 00:41:40.46\00:41:42.83 Barabbas... or Jesus who is called Christ? ' 00:41:43.03\00:41:45.67 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of 00:41:45.87\00:41:49.24 envy. While he was sitting on the judgment seat 00:41:49.44\00:41:52.27 his wife sent to him saying: 'Have nothing to do 00:41:52.47\00:41:57.21 with that just Man for I have suffered 00:41:57.41\00:42:00.82 many things in a dream because of Him. ' " 00:42:01.02\00:42:04.29 Ancient Christian tradition tells us 00:42:04.65\00:42:08.36 that Pilate's wife's name was Claudia. 00:42:08.76\00:42:12.66 Claudia was a convert to Judaism 00:42:12.86\00:42:15.50 and then later became an ardent Christian. 00:42:15.70\00:42:18.67 So here she is. They've been aroused from their sleep. 00:42:18.87\00:42:23.04 He's out there and she realizes: "Oh my goodness... look 00:42:23.24\00:42:26.68 what's going on. " So she raises a voice 00:42:26.88\00:42:29.94 to try to defend Jesus. 00:42:30.15\00:42:31.95 The only voice that was raised in His trial 00:42:32.15\00:42:34.18 to try to defend Him... a female voice. 00:42:34.52\00:42:38.09 Verse 20 says - and I have to say this - 00:42:39.12\00:42:43.99 her message really enforced... reinforced Pilate's fear. 00:42:44.19\00:42:48.46 We'll see in just a minute. 00:42:48.86\00:42:50.60 Verse 20: "But the chief priests and the elders 00:42:50.80\00:42:53.47 persuaded the multitude... " They're stirring up the crowd. 00:42:53.67\00:42:56.34 "that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 00:42:56.54\00:42:58.57 The governor answered and said to them: 'Which of the two 00:42:58.81\00:43:01.84 do you want me to release to you? ' 00:43:02.04\00:43:03.38 They said: 'Barabbas. ' And Jesus said to them... 00:43:03.45\00:43:05.98 or Pilate said to them: 00:43:06.18\00:43:07.65 'What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? ' 00:43:07.85\00:43:10.99 And they all said to him: 'Let Him be crucified! ' 00:43:11.29\00:43:14.29 Then the governor said: 'Why? What evil has He done? ' 00:43:14.69\00:43:18.53 But they cried out all the more saying: 'Let Him be crucified! ' 00:43:18.73\00:43:22.73 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all 00:43:23.13\00:43:25.73 but rather that a tumult was rising 00:43:25.93\00:43:28.64 he took water and he washed his hands 00:43:28.84\00:43:31.91 before the multitude saying: 00:43:32.11\00:43:34.14 'I am innocent of the blood of this just person. 00:43:34.28\00:43:36.81 You see to it.' " Now first of all, let me tell you something. 00:43:37.01\00:43:40.28 Pilate was not a nice guy. 00:43:40.88\00:43:43.55 History tells us... I mean this isn't just because 00:43:44.62\00:43:47.92 Pilate is some sweet wonderful man. 00:43:48.12\00:43:50.59 He was not a nice man; he mistreated the Jews. 00:43:51.53\00:43:54.56 He did not want to get... There had been so much 00:43:54.73\00:43:59.40 disturbance under his administration 00:43:59.60\00:44:01.34 he didn't want to get involved with this. 00:44:01.64\00:44:04.34 But something made him realize Jesus is innocent. 00:44:04.54\00:44:10.08 He exonerated Jesus 3 times. 00:44:10.28\00:44:12.95 But he's overruled by the people's choice. 00:44:13.35\00:44:15.82 So what does he do? He can't risk any more problems 00:44:16.02\00:44:19.72 with the Jews because Caesar could recall him. 00:44:19.92\00:44:23.93 Rome could recall him or even a worse state. 00:44:24.13\00:44:27.40 So he washes his hands, but he is not free of guilt. 00:44:27.76\00:44:33.44 Pilate had the authority and the responsibility 00:44:33.84\00:44:37.81 to act justly. And it's interesting. I found 00:44:38.01\00:44:41.08 this note... it's so fascinating. 00:44:41.28\00:44:43.04 Eusebius was a Christian scholar and a Roman historian. 00:44:43.24\00:44:47.48 He reports that in AD 37... 00:44:47.68\00:44:50.75 What year was Jesus killed? AD 31. 00:44:50.95\00:44:54.02 In AD 37 Pilate was... 00:44:54.42\00:44:59.06 He only reigned to 36. He was exiled to Gaul 00:44:59.26\00:45:03.97 which was in Western Europe. 00:45:04.17\00:45:05.50 So basically if he reigned from the middle of 31 00:45:05.80\00:45:09.44 to 36... for about 4-1/2 more years 00:45:09.64\00:45:13.48 of reign... he sold his soul. 00:45:13.68\00:45:15.88 We have to remember... whew! Matthew 27 and verse 25: 00:45:16.95\00:45:21.58 "And all the people answered: 'His blood be upon us 00:45:21.78\00:45:25.79 and on our children. ' 00:45:25.99\00:45:28.62 Then he released Barabbas to them. 00:45:28.82\00:45:31.86 And when he had scourged Jesus 00:45:32.06\00:45:34.96 he delivered Him to be crucified. " 00:45:35.16\00:45:37.33 You know, we sanitize the scenes of the flogging 00:45:37.97\00:45:42.34 and the crucifixion. 00:45:42.54\00:45:44.51 Perhaps because the Bible writers didn't go into the 00:45:44.71\00:45:47.54 horror of it... but they didn't have to 00:45:47.71\00:45:49.34 because people during their times knew what happened. 00:45:49.54\00:45:52.88 We have to go to extra Biblical resources 00:45:53.08\00:45:56.55 to find out exactly what happened. 00:45:56.75\00:46:00.52 When the Romans flogged a prisoner 00:46:00.72\00:46:03.96 they would strip him to the waist. 00:46:04.16\00:46:06.96 They would tie him to the rack, 00:46:07.13\00:46:09.13 tying his wrists with leather thongs 00:46:09.33\00:46:12.50 and his ankles with leather thongs. 00:46:12.70\00:46:15.04 And then the whip they used was no ordinary whip. 00:46:15.44\00:46:18.44 This was many leather thongs that were loaded with lead 00:46:18.84\00:46:23.04 and sharp bones and iron spikes. 00:46:23.24\00:46:25.81 And then every time they would hit 00:46:26.01\00:46:30.29 every blow would tear into the muscles and the ligaments. 00:46:30.49\00:46:35.22 And bones would be chipped; their bones would be laid bare. 00:46:35.42\00:46:40.00 And if they missed... if they hit wrong, 00:46:40.90\00:46:43.77 they would be disemboweled. Many men died on the rack. 00:46:43.97\00:46:47.74 See, the Rom... Now the Jews... how many blows? 00:46:48.04\00:46:53.44 Forty minus one... 39. 00:46:53.84\00:46:56.14 But the Romans had no such limit. 00:46:57.15\00:46:59.88 Their only stipulation was you beat them till the flesh 00:47:00.25\00:47:03.82 hung off their back. 00:47:04.02\00:47:05.35 So this was excruciating pain. 00:47:05.49\00:47:08.66 "He was wounded for our transgressions; 00:47:09.29\00:47:13.19 He was bruised for our iniquities... 00:47:13.53\00:47:16.46 and by His stripes we are healed. " 00:47:16.67\00:47:20.94 He was weakened from the beatings and dehydrated. 00:47:21.80\00:47:24.94 He hadn't had anything to drink all night long. 00:47:25.14\00:47:27.51 Blood loss. Is it any wonder 00:47:27.91\00:47:30.25 that He was too weak to carry His cross? 00:47:30.45\00:47:32.81 Verse 27: 00:47:33.15\00:47:35.05 "Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the 00:47:35.25\00:47:37.72 Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him 00:47:37.92\00:47:39.95 and they stripped Him and they put a scarlet robe on Him. 00:47:40.16\00:47:42.59 And when they had twisted a crown of thorns they put it 00:47:42.89\00:47:45.39 on His head and a reed in His right hand. 00:47:45.59\00:47:47.76 And they bowed the knee before Him. 00:47:47.96\00:47:50.17 And they mocked Him saying: 'Hail, king of the Jews. ' 00:47:50.37\00:47:53.54 Then they spat on Him and they took the reed and they 00:47:53.74\00:47:57.21 struck Him on the head. " 00:47:57.41\00:47:59.77 And John adds: "They struck Him with their hands. " 00:48:00.14\00:48:02.61 This is brutal treatment to our wounded and exhausted 00:48:03.38\00:48:07.82 Savior. The bushes of Palestine 00:48:08.02\00:48:11.55 are noted for their very long - and we've seen them - 00:48:11.75\00:48:15.82 very long very sharp thorns. 00:48:16.02\00:48:21.30 And these thorns... For the soldiers to have twisted 00:48:21.60\00:48:25.47 this together they would have had to have had gloved hands 00:48:25.67\00:48:29.10 or their hands would have been bloodied. 00:48:29.30\00:48:31.31 So when they put that... Each time they put that 00:48:31.51\00:48:34.94 crown of thorns on His head... each time they hit Him over 00:48:35.14\00:48:37.91 the head that would drive the thorns deeper 00:48:38.11\00:48:40.92 into Christ's scalp. And what were thorns? 00:48:41.08\00:48:44.62 They were an emblem of sin, remember? 00:48:44.82\00:48:47.36 When God put the curse on the earth the thorns came. 00:48:47.56\00:48:52.79 So the soldiers placed an emblem of sin upon Jesus' head 00:48:52.99\00:48:57.47 but God crowned Him. He crowned Him with the actual 00:48:58.57\00:49:04.04 sins of the world. Sister White says 00:49:04.24\00:49:07.88 "Imagine... " Let your imagination go to this scene. 00:49:08.08\00:49:11.71 "Imagine now the bloodied, battered 00:49:12.61\00:49:17.02 body of the suffering Messiah. " 00:49:17.22\00:49:20.82 There's a scripture that I really understand now. 00:49:21.89\00:49:25.09 Isaiah 52:14 says: 00:49:25.49\00:49:27.86 "Just as many were astonished at You 00:49:28.26\00:49:31.77 so His... " speaking of the servant, the Messiah... 00:49:31.97\00:49:37.61 "so His visage was marred more than any man 00:49:37.77\00:49:42.51 and His form more than the sons of men. " 00:49:42.71\00:49:46.92 In other words, He was so beaten, 00:49:47.32\00:49:50.02 so bruised, He was unrecognizable. 00:49:50.22\00:49:54.56 So what happens in John 19 00:49:55.99\00:50:00.70 verses 4 through 16. John 19:4-16. 00:50:00.90\00:50:04.47 We're going to have to hurry, I just looked at the clock. 00:50:04.67\00:50:08.50 Pilate's final attempt for compromise. 00:50:09.10\00:50:11.77 Pilate brings Him out and says: "Behold the Man. " 00:50:13.04\00:50:15.98 "Behold the bloody spectacle. " 00:50:16.18\00:50:18.31 "And therefore when the chief priests and the officers 00:50:18.51\00:50:20.88 saw Him they said: 'Crucify Him; crucify Him! ' " 00:50:21.02\00:50:23.99 He said: "You take Him and crucify Him. I don't find any 00:50:24.62\00:50:27.42 fault in Him. " And they said: "But we have a law 00:50:27.62\00:50:30.39 and according to our law He ought to die because 00:50:30.59\00:50:32.53 He claims... He made Himself out to be the Son of God. " 00:50:32.73\00:50:35.76 Whew! Now Pilate's even more fearful. 00:50:35.96\00:50:38.60 History says that he was very superstitious, and the idea 00:50:38.80\00:50:41.74 that he was about to kill a supernatural being 00:50:41.94\00:50:45.37 made him afraid. So he comes back in and he says 00:50:45.57\00:50:48.28 to Jesus: "Where are You from? " 00:50:48.48\00:50:50.28 And Jesus doesn't answer. 00:50:50.58\00:50:52.51 And he says: "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know 00:50:52.71\00:50:55.12 that I have the power to crucify You and the power 00:50:55.32\00:50:57.85 to release You? " But Jesus says this: 00:50:58.05\00:51:00.59 "You could have no power at all against Me 00:51:00.79\00:51:04.13 unless it had been given you from above. 00:51:04.33\00:51:07.30 Therefore the one who delivered Me to you 00:51:07.50\00:51:10.53 has the worse... the greater sin. " 00:51:10.73\00:51:13.60 So he goes therefore in verse 13 00:51:13.80\00:51:16.71 to sit on the judgment seat 00:51:16.91\00:51:19.81 and he then in verse 14 says: 00:51:20.04\00:51:23.65 "Behold your King. " He leads them away... 00:51:23.85\00:51:27.68 They're saying: "Away with Him; crucify Him. " 00:51:27.88\00:51:29.95 And he delivers Him to be crucified 00:51:30.15\00:51:32.55 so that they took Jesus and led Him away. 00:51:32.75\00:51:35.52 Jesus... whose whole ministry was healing people 00:51:35.72\00:51:38.86 and setting them free... He was wounded 00:51:39.06\00:51:42.40 and bound and led away to be crucified. 00:51:42.60\00:51:45.07 And men thought that they had triumphed, but the real 00:51:45.27\00:51:48.00 triumph was going to be shown in just a few days, wasn't it, 00:51:48.20\00:51:51.67 at the resurrection. 00:51:51.87\00:51:53.21 So let me ask you this: 00:51:53.41\00:51:55.58 why? We know Jesus had to die for us. 00:51:56.51\00:51:59.71 Why did Jesus have to suffer so much 00:52:00.22\00:52:04.32 before His death? What was the purpose 00:52:04.52\00:52:08.22 of His suffering before the crucifixion? 00:52:08.42\00:52:11.69 His suffering reveals the magnitude of God's love for us. 00:52:12.09\00:52:16.63 John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only 00:52:18.17\00:52:21.24 begotten Son, that whosoever should believe on Him 00:52:21.44\00:52:24.91 would not perish but have everlasting life. " 00:52:25.11\00:52:26.94 Romans 5:8. "God demonstrated His love by this: 00:52:27.14\00:52:30.01 while we were yet sinners He sent Jesus to die for us. " 00:52:30.21\00:52:33.52 And John 15:13 when Jesus said: "Greater love hath no man 00:52:33.92\00:52:37.92 than this: that he would lay down his life 00:52:38.12\00:52:39.89 for another. " Because of our sins... 00:52:40.12\00:52:43.63 I Peter says He suffered "to bring us to God. " 00:52:43.83\00:52:48.13 Listen: I Peter 3:18: 00:52:48.33\00:52:50.20 "For Christ also suffered once for sin - 00:52:50.40\00:52:53.17 the just for the unjust - that He might bring us to God. 00:52:53.37\00:52:57.04 Being put to death in the flesh 00:52:57.24\00:52:58.64 but made alive in the Spirit. " 00:52:58.84\00:53:00.68 Jesus paid a debt He did not owe because we owed a debt 00:53:01.08\00:53:04.75 we could not pay. Isaiah 53 says: "Surely He 00:53:04.95\00:53:09.68 has borne our griefs, carried our sorrows, yet we esteemed Him 00:53:09.88\00:53:13.19 stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. But He was 00:53:13.39\00:53:16.19 wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised 00:53:16.39\00:53:19.23 for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace 00:53:19.43\00:53:22.03 was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. " 00:53:22.23\00:53:25.20 The violence of sin was heaped upon Him, 00:53:25.77\00:53:28.64 and His suffering reveals the horrendous nature of sin. 00:53:29.04\00:53:33.01 It demonstrates how far He would go for love and righteousness 00:53:33.94\00:53:37.65 because He suffered to make us whole. 00:53:37.85\00:53:41.05 But it is the New Testament book of Hebrews - 00:53:41.45\00:53:44.09 and I don't think we've got time to flip there - so let me 00:53:44.29\00:53:46.72 just say it quickly. In Hebrews chapter 4:14-16 00:53:46.92\00:53:52.46 says He suffered with our weaknesses so that He could be 00:53:52.66\00:53:57.10 a compassionate High Priest. 00:53:57.30\00:53:59.77 "Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who is 00:54:00.47\00:54:03.44 passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, 00:54:03.64\00:54:05.67 let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest 00:54:05.87\00:54:08.88 who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses 00:54:09.28\00:54:11.41 but was in all points tempted as we are 00:54:11.81\00:54:14.22 yet without sin. " And THAT is the reason 00:54:14.38\00:54:18.09 that we can come boldly before the throne of grace. 00:54:18.29\00:54:22.46 He understands! He has proven that 00:54:22.66\00:54:27.00 He's not some distant God. 00:54:27.20\00:54:29.06 He's not gonna let you suffer alone. 00:54:29.46\00:54:31.57 Have you, like Jesus, been betrayed and abandoned 00:54:31.77\00:54:35.34 by those closest to you? 00:54:35.54\00:54:37.27 Have you been verbally abused? Suffered rejection 00:54:37.47\00:54:41.38 and ridicule? Have people false- ly accused you and told lies 00:54:41.58\00:54:46.08 about you? Have you suffered vicious physical abuse? 00:54:46.28\00:54:49.95 Have you been stripped naked and violated 00:54:50.25\00:54:52.85 and suffered intense pain? 00:54:53.05\00:54:54.76 Jesus understands your feeling of powerlessness. 00:54:54.96\00:55:00.16 Jesus knows that you are tempted. 00:55:00.66\00:55:03.57 He understands that you're temp- ted to hurt those who hurt you. 00:55:03.77\00:55:07.14 To lash out against those who abuse you. 00:55:07.34\00:55:09.67 He suffered to give you victory over these feelings. 00:55:10.51\00:55:13.68 He's somebody who can carry our burdens today 00:55:14.54\00:55:17.25 and give us the victory. 00:55:17.45\00:55:19.38 In the decades following Jesus' death 00:55:19.58\00:55:22.02 there were many martyrs who were brutally martyred. 00:55:22.22\00:55:26.62 But knowing that Jesus willingly 00:55:27.06\00:55:30.53 chose to face such physical pain and suffering 00:55:30.73\00:55:34.00 on their behalf gave them the strength 00:55:34.36\00:55:37.23 to carry forward... faithful unto the end. 00:55:37.43\00:55:40.90 By choosing to suffer physical and verbal abuse 00:55:41.37\00:55:45.71 He identified with us so that He could offer us 00:55:45.91\00:55:49.51 His supernatural strength at the times when we suffer. 00:55:49.71\00:55:53.88 As we confront the terrifying trials of life 00:55:54.75\00:55:58.22 we need to reach up for our Savior's hand 00:55:58.62\00:56:01.72 knowing that He is able to give us the help that we need. 00:56:02.22\00:56:06.76 He empathizes; He'll give us the victory. 00:56:06.96\00:56:09.46 We know that He was crucified in weakness 00:56:11.47\00:56:14.37 but He goes on living in the power of God. 00:56:14.57\00:56:17.54 And His power is made perfect in our weakness. 00:56:17.74\00:56:21.58 His grace is sufficient, so we can take great hope. 00:56:21.78\00:56:27.45 We know like Paul said in Philippians 4:13 00:56:27.75\00:56:31.75 "I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me. " 00:56:31.95\00:56:37.16 Praise the Lord! 00:56:37.36\00:56:38.69 One of my favorite promises is Romans 8:37-39. 00:56:38.73\00:56:44.23 It says this: "Yet in all these things 00:56:45.33\00:56:48.14 we are more than conquerors 00:56:48.54\00:56:51.21 through Him who loved us. 00:56:51.41\00:56:52.94 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life 00:56:53.14\00:56:55.71 nor angels nor principalities nor powers 00:56:56.11\00:56:59.55 nor things present nor things to come 00:57:00.05\00:57:03.05 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing 00:57:03.25\00:57:08.52 shall be able to separate us 00:57:08.92\00:57:11.66 from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. " 00:57:11.86\00:57:15.96 I hope that you will take this study 00:57:16.77\00:57:20.74 and go home and repeat it over and over. 00:57:20.94\00:57:23.74 Watch what it does to your heart. 00:57:24.14\00:57:26.21 Watch how it connects you to the Lord. 00:57:26.61\00:57:28.98 Watch how you will be imbued 00:57:29.18\00:57:31.21 with the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:57:31.61\00:57:34.02
