Welcome to 3ABN's Spring Camp Meeting: 00:00:51.18\00:00:53.95 Live from the 3ABN Worship Center. 00:00:57.02\00:00:59.69 Hello friends and welcome to 3ABN Spring Camp Meeting 2016. 00:01:02.69\00:01:07.40 We've just had a blessed time 00:01:07.76\00:01:09.40 listening to Pastor John Bradshaw's message. 00:01:09.60\00:01:12.60 And this now is the second in a numerical series 00:01:12.80\00:01:16.57 of sermons that will be focused on Christ, Calvary, 00:01:16.77\00:01:20.28 and the Sanctuary. 00:01:20.48\00:01:21.81 We'd like to welcome you with a hearty Amen. Amen! 00:01:21.88\00:01:25.41 And if you are in driving dis- tance or... You know you might 00:01:25.61\00:01:28.75 consider Mississippi driving distance. I just met somebody 00:01:28.95\00:01:31.12 that drove from Mississippi. Met somebody that flew 00:01:31.32\00:01:33.72 all the way from London, England... 00:01:33.92\00:01:35.66 actually Birmingham, England. 00:01:35.86\00:01:37.59 And so that may interpret differently for you, but we'd 00:01:37.76\00:01:40.46 like to invite you because this is just Wednesday. 00:01:40.66\00:01:42.80 We've got Thursday, Friday, and Sabbath and you 00:01:43.00\00:01:45.57 do not want to miss what God has in store for this weekend. 00:01:45.77\00:01:50.14 What better subject matter than Christ, Calvary, 00:01:50.34\00:01:54.58 and the Sanctuary. 00:01:54.78\00:01:56.44 Our speaker for this hour is Pastor David Shin. 00:01:56.68\00:02:00.92 He is a part of our 3ABN family. 00:02:01.08\00:02:04.09 I asked him just a moment ago where he's pastoring 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.39 and I knew that he was in what I might refer to as the 00:02:07.59\00:02:10.56 contiguous United States but he shuffled off to 00:02:10.76\00:02:14.96 Anchorage, Alaska. 00:02:15.16\00:02:18.27 I don't know what the temperature is there, but I'm 00:02:18.87\00:02:21.04 sure he's glad to be here. Here in southern Illinois 00:02:21.24\00:02:24.34 where the temperature is wonderful and warm 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.64 and we have been blessed by the presence of the Lord already. 00:02:26.84\00:02:30.31 His message is entitled His Way Is In The Sanctuary. 00:02:30.81\00:02:34.98 His wife is also here with him, Tennille. 00:02:35.18\00:02:36.79 And I had a chance to meet her, a wonderful young lady. 00:02:36.99\00:02:39.22 A bright smile. Did not know she was related to one of our 00:02:39.62\00:02:43.16 church members. I learn things every day the more I stay alive. 00:02:43.39\00:02:46.33 Praise the Lord for that. 00:02:46.53\00:02:47.86 We also are going to have some beautiful music. 00:02:48.00\00:02:50.40 And I'm going to allow Pastor David Shin to have 00:02:50.70\00:02:54.07 the opening prayer. But our minister of music 00:02:54.27\00:02:57.84 is going to be Sandra Entermann. 00:02:58.04\00:03:00.38 And I tell you, Sandra Entermann is not only from down under 00:03:00.58\00:03:04.95 but when she's here in Illinois she's up above. 00:03:05.25\00:03:08.05 And she has come to bless us, and she is going to bless us 00:03:08.82\00:03:11.25 with this wonderful song entitled I understand 00:03:11.45\00:03:14.76 One And The Same. And after she sings 00:03:14.96\00:03:19.03 I understand we're going to have the opportunity 00:03:19.23\00:03:22.30 to listen to this wonderful message by Pastor David Shin. 00:03:22.50\00:03:26.10 You know, I think... I'm getting the impression 00:03:26.30\00:03:29.00 from the Lord that I need to begin with prayer. 00:03:29.20\00:03:30.91 Can I do that? Let's bow our heads. 00:03:31.11\00:03:33.04 Loving Father in heaven, we thank you 00:03:34.28\00:03:36.21 that as Jesus is uplifted 00:03:36.51\00:03:39.78 that Christ is exalted 00:03:39.98\00:03:42.82 as we focus on the great gift that purchased our salvation 00:03:44.02\00:03:49.36 on that cruel cross of Calvary. 00:03:49.76\00:03:52.19 Lord, we thank you that there is no tomb that holds 00:03:52.39\00:03:54.96 the body of Jesus this night. 00:03:55.16\00:03:57.67 We do pray, Lord, that You will bless our hearts 00:03:57.97\00:04:00.44 as we focus that even now He's in the heavenly sanctuary 00:04:00.64\00:04:05.51 ministering in our behalf. 00:04:06.78\00:04:08.41 Those that are heirs of salvation, He brings our names 00:04:08.81\00:04:12.85 before His heavenly Father. We do pray, Lord, 00:04:13.05\00:04:15.65 that when time shall be no more each one of us will have 00:04:16.05\00:04:18.69 the great privilege of hearing our names called 00:04:18.89\00:04:21.79 to be a part of that eternal redeemed host. 00:04:21.99\00:04:24.66 We pray a blessing on Your manservant this night: 00:04:25.06\00:04:27.50 Pastor David Shin. We pray that You will guide him 00:04:27.73\00:04:31.10 by the presence and power of Your Holy Spirit. 00:04:31.30\00:04:34.00 And Father, when this message is done 00:04:34.47\00:04:36.24 may the gap between You and us and the plan You have 00:04:36.44\00:04:39.91 for our lives be fulfilled in a mighty way. 00:04:40.14\00:04:44.35 In Jesus' name we pray - and all of God's people said: 00:04:44.55\00:04:46.92 Amen and Amen. 00:04:47.85\00:04:50.05 Let's welcome Sandra with a hearty Amen. Amen! 00:04:51.89\00:04:55.96 How should I begin 00:05:14.31\00:05:17.78 to speak about a God 00:05:17.98\00:05:20.98 that I will never comprehend? 00:05:21.18\00:05:25.75 So high and mighty, and yet 00:05:27.46\00:05:30.46 closer than a friend 00:05:30.86\00:05:34.50 The beginning and the end 00:05:35.80\00:05:41.74 The mystery of His holiness 00:05:46.07\00:05:49.58 The wonder of His humanness 00:05:50.01\00:05:53.38 Are one... One and the same 00:05:53.58\00:05:59.12 I can't do Him justice 00:05:59.32\00:06:03.12 With any one name 00:06:03.32\00:06:08.66 The holy God of heaven 00:06:08.86\00:06:12.17 The humble Man who bore my shame 00:06:12.47\00:06:18.44 Are one... 00:06:19.87\00:06:22.28 One and the same 00:06:22.48\00:06:28.38 I scarcely understand 00:06:35.42\00:06:39.06 How a simple servant can be 00:06:39.46\00:06:43.00 called the Great I Am 00:06:43.20\00:06:46.84 How the Son of God 00:06:47.04\00:06:50.47 Is still the Son of Man 00:06:50.67\00:06:54.44 Both the shepherd and the Lamb 00:06:55.81\00:07:01.78 The Healer and the wounded One 00:07:05.59\00:07:09.06 The Father and the only Son 00:07:09.46\00:07:12.83 Are one... One in the same 00:07:13.03\00:07:18.27 I can't do Him justice 00:07:18.47\00:07:22.10 With any one name 00:07:22.30\00:07:27.58 The holy God of heaven 00:07:27.74\00:07:30.88 The humble Man who bore my shame 00:07:31.38\00:07:37.32 Are one... 00:07:38.52\00:07:40.66 One and the same 00:07:41.22\00:07:46.29 The way that we can come to know 00:07:46.49\00:07:49.83 The truth that sets us free 00:07:50.03\00:07:53.64 The life that died and rose again 00:07:53.84\00:07:57.37 Love revealed to me 00:07:57.57\00:08:00.61 You are one... 00:08:00.81\00:08:03.58 One and the same 00:08:03.98\00:08:07.08 I can't do Him justice 00:08:07.28\00:08:10.85 With any one name 00:08:11.05\00:08:14.96 Oh, the holy God of heaven 00:08:15.36\00:08:19.69 The humble Man who bore my shame 00:08:20.13\00:08:26.00 Are one... 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.94 One and the same 00:08:30.24\00:08:36.18 One... 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.61 One and the 00:08:38.98\00:08:42.68 same. 00:08:43.42\00:08:49.36 Amen! 00:09:07.94\00:09:09.68 Amen! Praise the Lord! One and the same. 00:09:11.41\00:09:14.52 Good evening everyone. Good evening. 00:09:14.72\00:09:17.79 Let's bow our heads together as we pray. 00:09:17.99\00:09:19.99 Our Father in heaven, we thank you that You are 00:09:20.92\00:09:24.06 One and the same. 00:09:24.26\00:09:25.99 We thank you for the sanctuary, 00:09:27.03\00:09:28.93 that Your way is in the sanctuary, 00:09:29.43\00:09:32.53 that You have made provision for us through Jesus Christ. 00:09:32.73\00:09:36.81 We thank You that the sanctuary is a model 00:09:37.77\00:09:40.58 of where Jesus is in the plan of salvation. 00:09:40.78\00:09:45.11 We pray that the Holy Spirit would guide us tonight 00:09:45.51\00:09:49.15 as we open the Word of God. 00:09:49.35\00:09:50.69 For we ask these things in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:09:50.82\00:09:54.26 Every year the billionaire Warren Buffett 00:09:55.06\00:09:59.43 auctions off on eBay 00:10:00.83\00:10:03.63 an opportunity to have a face-to-face encounter 00:10:04.50\00:10:09.97 with him every year. 00:10:10.17\00:10:12.71 He's been doing this since the year 2000. 00:10:12.91\00:10:15.54 Last I checked the last auction 00:10:16.34\00:10:18.55 for a meeting with Warren Buffett, the billionaire, 00:10:18.95\00:10:22.25 went for... you ready? 00:10:22.45\00:10:24.62 Two million dollars. 00:10:24.82\00:10:27.89 At an up-scale restaurant in New York City 00:10:29.76\00:10:32.19 you can ask any question, 00:10:32.39\00:10:34.23 spend a couple hours with this famous billionaire. 00:10:34.46\00:10:38.77 I read an interview of a gentleman that had won 00:10:38.97\00:10:42.10 this interview, and the question was asked: "Was it worth it 00:10:42.30\00:10:46.91 to pay millions of dollars to have an encounter 00:10:47.11\00:10:51.48 with this man? " And he said: "It was absolutely worth every 00:10:51.68\00:10:54.95 single penny. " Believe it or not. 00:10:55.15\00:10:57.22 He said it was "a transforming experience. " 00:10:57.42\00:11:00.56 It's amazing that people are willing to pay millions 00:11:00.76\00:11:02.79 to have lunch and interaction with a billionaire. 00:11:02.99\00:11:06.36 However, the Warren Buffett encounter 00:11:06.56\00:11:10.23 pales in comparison 00:11:10.73\00:11:13.94 with the face-to-face encounter that the Bible describes 00:11:14.14\00:11:18.14 and that Adam and Eve enjoyed in Edenic perfection. 00:11:18.34\00:11:23.95 I want to read a statement as we begin our discussion 00:11:24.45\00:11:27.48 tonight: His Way Is In The Sanctuary. This is from the book 00:11:27.68\00:11:31.55 Education page 15. "When Adam came from the hand of God 00:11:31.75\00:11:36.73 he bore in his physical, mental, and spiritual nature 00:11:36.93\00:11:42.63 a likeness to his Maker. 00:11:42.83\00:11:44.93 God created man in His own image 00:11:45.33\00:11:47.64 and it was His purpose that the longer man lived 00:11:47.84\00:11:51.54 the more fully he should reveal this image, 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.88 the more fully reflect the glory of the Creator. " 00:11:55.28\00:11:59.11 And listen to this: "Face-to-face, 00:11:59.31\00:12:02.78 heart-to-heart communion with his Maker 00:12:02.98\00:12:06.42 was his high privilege. 00:12:06.62\00:12:09.26 Had he remained loyal to God 00:12:09.46\00:12:12.36 all this would have been his forever. " 00:12:12.56\00:12:16.20 The book Education tells us that Adam and Eve 00:12:17.03\00:12:19.53 enjoyed face-to-face 00:12:19.73\00:12:23.20 open communion with God. 00:12:23.41\00:12:26.41 I wonder what that was like: 00:12:27.18\00:12:28.81 to have a conversation with God unhindered. 00:12:29.21\00:12:34.42 Open communion with God. 00:12:34.62\00:12:37.65 We know that Adam and Eve sinned, and there was a dramatic 00:12:38.05\00:12:43.69 change in this relationship with God. 00:12:44.09\00:12:47.60 And I want to invite you to open your Bibles 00:12:47.76\00:12:50.10 to the second book of the Bible. 00:12:50.30\00:12:52.70 Exodus chapter 33 and verse 18. 00:12:52.90\00:12:56.27 Moses is on the mountain, about to receive the Ten Commandments. 00:12:56.47\00:12:59.71 He's having a conversation with God, although it is 00:12:59.91\00:13:03.24 different than the one Adam and Eve had. 00:13:03.45\00:13:05.88 And here Moses dares to ask God this question 00:13:06.08\00:13:10.69 in verse 18 and he said: 00:13:10.89\00:13:12.45 "Please show me Your glory. " 00:13:12.65\00:13:15.96 "Then God answered and said: 'I will make My goodness 00:13:18.43\00:13:21.36 pass before you. I will proclaim the name of the Lord 00:13:21.56\00:13:24.37 before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious; 00:13:24.57\00:13:27.50 I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. ' " 00:13:27.70\00:13:31.37 So the glory of God is the character of God. 00:13:32.17\00:13:34.51 He said: "Show me Your glory" and He gives characteristics, 00:13:34.71\00:13:37.55 elements of His character. And here in verse 20 00:13:37.75\00:13:41.35 God says something interesting. 00:13:41.55\00:13:44.65 And He said: "You cannot see My... " What? 00:13:44.85\00:13:48.79 "You cannot see My face for no man shall see My face 00:13:49.19\00:13:53.86 and live. " There's a dramatic change 00:13:54.03\00:13:57.13 in the relationship with God. Back in Edenic perfection 00:13:57.33\00:14:00.47 Adam and Eve had open communion with God. 00:14:00.67\00:14:03.07 But here we see that God says to Moses: 00:14:03.27\00:14:06.21 "You cannot see My face and live. " 00:14:06.41\00:14:09.38 Verse 21: "And the Lord said: 'Here is a place by Me. 00:14:09.78\00:14:13.15 And you shall stand on the rock and so it shall be 00:14:13.35\00:14:15.95 when My glory passes by 00:14:16.15\00:14:18.49 that I will put you in the cleft of the rock 00:14:18.69\00:14:21.36 and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. 00:14:21.76\00:14:25.56 Then I will take away My hand and you shall see My... ' What? 00:14:25.76\00:14:29.33 'you shall see My back 00:14:29.73\00:14:31.97 but My face shall not be seen. ' " 00:14:32.17\00:14:35.90 In Edenic perfection there was open communion with God. 00:14:36.87\00:14:40.24 Unfettered. And this was made possible because of 00:14:40.64\00:14:45.05 the state of Adam and Eve. But because of sin 00:14:45.25\00:14:47.98 even Moses on the mountain was not allowed to see 00:14:48.18\00:14:52.65 the face of God but was only allowed to see His back. 00:14:52.85\00:14:57.39 This was not because God did not want to reveal Himself 00:14:57.86\00:15:01.13 to Moses but because the condition of man 00:15:01.33\00:15:04.63 had dramatically changed. 00:15:04.83\00:15:07.34 Remember the story of the ark of the covenant 00:15:07.90\00:15:10.01 being taken away by the Philistines 00:15:10.41\00:15:12.61 in I Samuel chapter 6. 00:15:12.81\00:15:14.44 Later the Philistines decided to return it. 00:15:15.41\00:15:17.91 And it was taken into the land of Israel - remember that story? 00:15:18.51\00:15:22.45 by a yoke of oxen that were led supernaturally 00:15:22.85\00:15:27.46 into Israel. The ark of the covenant remained covered. 00:15:27.66\00:15:30.93 Remember the children of Israel went out to the ark of the 00:15:31.53\00:15:34.36 covenant and they uncovered the ark of the covenant 00:15:34.56\00:15:37.53 and immediately individuals died 00:15:37.70\00:15:40.90 from the presence of the Shekinah glory. 00:15:41.10\00:15:43.77 And it's interesting that in I Samuel chapter 6 verse 20 00:15:43.97\00:15:47.28 the individuals that are witnessing the glory of God 00:15:47.68\00:15:51.91 and witnessing the individuals that are dying from the presence 00:15:52.11\00:15:55.35 of the holy God. In I Samuel chapter 6 verse 20 00:15:55.55\00:15:58.89 they ask this question: "Who can stand 00:15:59.09\00:16:03.22 in the presence of a holy God? " 00:16:03.66\00:16:06.73 "Who can stand in the presence of a holy God? " 00:16:07.66\00:16:12.03 Paul comments on this in Hebrews chapter 12 verse 14. 00:16:12.63\00:16:16.34 He says: "Without holiness 00:16:16.54\00:16:19.84 no one will see the Lord. " 00:16:20.48\00:16:24.58 Let me read that again. 00:16:25.11\00:16:26.75 "Without holiness no one will see the Lord. " 00:16:26.95\00:16:32.12 And in Matthew chapter 5 verse 8 in the Beatitudes 00:16:32.82\00:16:35.66 Jesus Himself said: "Blessed are the pure in heart 00:16:35.86\00:16:40.90 for they shall see God. " 00:16:41.76\00:16:44.57 You see, the criteria for having a face-to-face open 00:16:44.97\00:16:50.21 encounter with God is holiness. 00:16:50.41\00:16:54.94 Is holiness. 00:16:55.98\00:16:58.78 So God, wanting that relationship with man, 00:16:59.51\00:17:04.65 institutes the plan of salvation, 00:17:05.05\00:17:08.42 and the plan of salvation is a plan of restoration. 00:17:08.62\00:17:13.73 What is it everybody? 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.23 Restoration. It is to bring us back. 00:17:15.40\00:17:20.94 That is the plan of salvation. 00:17:21.34\00:17:22.80 The book Education goes on in pages 15 and 16: 00:17:23.00\00:17:25.27 "To restore in man the image of his Maker, 00:17:25.47\00:17:28.31 to bring him back to the perfection in which he was 00:17:28.51\00:17:32.48 created, to promote the development of body, mind, 00:17:32.68\00:17:35.15 and soul that the divine purpose in his creation might be 00:17:35.35\00:17:38.59 realized: this was to be the work of redemption. 00:17:38.79\00:17:44.03 So the plan of salvation is to bring us back. 00:17:44.23\00:17:48.36 It is to bring us all the way back to that open, face-to-face 00:17:48.56\00:17:53.40 communion with God that Adam and Eve enjoyed. 00:17:53.60\00:17:57.57 That open, face-to-face communion that sin destroyed. 00:17:58.34\00:18:03.68 And so God reveals the plan 00:18:04.58\00:18:08.92 of how God will bring us back through the sanctuary. 00:18:09.22\00:18:15.16 Psalm 77:13 says: "Your way, O God, 00:18:15.36\00:18:18.83 is in the sanctuary. " 00:18:19.13\00:18:22.83 I want to invite them to put a picture of the sanctuary 00:18:23.67\00:18:28.64 there on the screen. A slide. It's a bird's-eye view 00:18:28.84\00:18:32.34 of the Mosaic sanctuary. 00:18:32.54\00:18:35.78 And you will see from this bird's-eye view 00:18:35.98\00:18:39.38 that the most holy place is there in the inner sanctum 00:18:40.52\00:18:45.52 of the sanctuary. You can see it there with the ark of the 00:18:45.72\00:18:48.16 covenant where the Shekinah glory resides. 00:18:48.36\00:18:51.13 Now the question is this: where were Adam and Eve 00:18:51.33\00:18:54.93 in Edenic perfection? They were right there! 00:18:55.10\00:18:59.03 Right in the open communion with God, face-to-face, 00:18:59.33\00:19:03.97 unfettered. That's where Adam and Eve were. 00:19:04.17\00:19:05.97 Because of sin the entire human race 00:19:06.17\00:19:09.18 were placed outside of the sanctuary. 00:19:09.38\00:19:12.31 The plan of salvation is for God to bring us 00:19:12.71\00:19:16.82 all the way back into the Most Holy Place 00:19:17.02\00:19:20.59 into that open communion with God that Adam and Eve enjoyed. 00:19:20.79\00:19:24.53 You can see from the slide that God does this by bringing us 00:19:25.39\00:19:29.30 into the sanctuary into the courtyard. 00:19:29.50\00:19:33.03 He does this in three distinct phases. 00:19:33.23\00:19:36.54 He brings us into the courtyard experience. 00:19:36.74\00:19:39.64 Then He brings us into the Holy Place experience. 00:19:39.84\00:19:43.58 And then He finally brings us into the Most Holy Place 00:19:43.78\00:19:47.92 experience. That's where Adam and Eve were. 00:19:48.12\00:19:51.45 The courtyard? We call that justification. 00:19:51.65\00:19:54.62 God delivers us from the penalty of sin. 00:19:55.02\00:19:57.53 God brings us into the Holy Place: sanctification. 00:19:57.89\00:20:02.00 God delivers us from the power of sin. 00:20:02.20\00:20:04.53 Then He brings us into the Most Holy Place: 00:20:04.73\00:20:08.10 glorification. God delivers us from the presence of sin. 00:20:08.30\00:20:14.28 God's desire is to bring us all the way back 00:20:14.48\00:20:18.65 And the beauty of the gospel, friends, is that there is blood 00:20:18.85\00:20:22.52 and grace all the way back to the throne of God. 00:20:22.72\00:20:27.12 Amen? It is all through Jesus 00:20:27.32\00:20:30.69 that He brings us back. So God has created this model 00:20:30.89\00:20:35.66 in kindergarten form as it were 00:20:36.06\00:20:39.33 so that it can illustrate God's plan of restoration 00:20:39.53\00:20:44.04 to bring us all the way back to the throne of God... 00:20:44.24\00:20:49.04 to that face-to-face encounter that Adam and Eve enjoyed. 00:20:49.24\00:20:54.88 I know what some individuals may be thinking: 00:20:56.22\00:20:59.42 "Isn't the sanctuary just an Old Testament relic 00:21:00.76\00:21:05.76 that is no longer relevant for New Testament Christians? " 00:21:05.96\00:21:10.23 That is a common sentiment that is held by many. 00:21:10.83\00:21:14.04 They assume that the sanctuary was Old Testament 00:21:14.24\00:21:17.37 and now we are New Testament and that we have shifted to 00:21:17.57\00:21:21.01 a new dispensation and that the sanctuary is no longer relevant 00:21:21.21\00:21:25.95 for us living in the 21st century. 00:21:26.25\00:21:28.85 Yes, it served it's purpose for the Jews 00:21:29.05\00:21:32.49 but it is no longer relevant for Christians living today. 00:21:32.69\00:21:36.99 I want to invite you to open your Bibles very quickly 00:21:37.29\00:21:39.49 to the book of Revelation. In Revelation chapter 4 and verse 5 00:21:39.69\00:21:42.43 we can see that John the Revelator sees a vision 00:21:42.63\00:21:47.50 of a different type of tabernacle and sanctuary 00:21:47.70\00:21:51.97 that is not of the Mosaic origin. 00:21:52.17\00:21:55.44 Revelation is the last book of the Bible. 00:21:55.84\00:21:57.68 Revelation chapter 4 and verse 5. 00:21:57.88\00:22:01.52 "And from the throne proceeded lightnings, 00:22:02.75\00:22:06.69 thunderings, and voices. 00:22:06.89\00:22:09.39 Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne 00:22:09.59\00:22:14.20 which are the seven Spirits of God. " 00:22:14.36\00:22:17.97 What is John seeing here? He's seeing the candlesticks 00:22:18.37\00:22:22.24 and they are by implication in heaven. 00:22:22.44\00:22:26.17 Go to Revelation chapter 8 verse 3. 00:22:26.37\00:22:28.58 A few pages over: Revelation chapter 8 verse 3. 00:22:28.98\00:22:32.68 "Then another angel having a golden censer 00:22:34.42\00:22:38.69 came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense 00:22:38.89\00:22:42.82 that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints 00:22:43.02\00:22:45.86 upon the golden altar which was before the throne. " 00:22:46.06\00:22:49.86 Here John sees the altar of incense in heaven. 00:22:50.10\00:22:54.27 And last but not least, go over to Revelation chapter 11 00:22:54.47\00:22:58.21 and verse 19. We see another depiction 00:22:58.41\00:23:01.78 of another article of furniture in the sanctuary. 00:23:01.98\00:23:05.88 Revelation chapter 11 verse 19: 00:23:06.08\00:23:08.45 "Then the temple of God was opened... " Where? 00:23:08.85\00:23:11.92 "in heaven. " Now there are people that believe that there 00:23:12.32\00:23:14.46 is no heavenly sanctuary but HERE WE HAVE IT! 00:23:14.66\00:23:16.83 You don't need to be a Greek scholar to understand this, 00:23:17.03\00:23:20.03 friends, AMEN? Revelation chapter 11 verse 19: 00:23:20.23\00:23:23.00 "The temple of God was opened... " Where? "in heaven. " 00:23:23.20\00:23:26.03 "The ark of the covenant was seen in His temple 00:23:26.23\00:23:29.97 and there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, 00:23:30.37\00:23:33.98 and earthquakes and great hail. " 00:23:34.18\00:23:37.11 So here we can see. In three different instances 00:23:37.31\00:23:40.08 we see three different articles of furniture. 00:23:40.28\00:23:42.78 And in Revelation chapter 11 verse 19 the Bible tells us 00:23:42.98\00:23:45.59 that the temple of God was opened in heaven and he saw 00:23:45.79\00:23:49.06 the ark of the covenant. I believe that the sanctuary 00:23:49.26\00:23:52.99 is not only a model for men but also a model for angels 00:23:53.19\00:23:58.53 and the entire universe to understand God's plan of 00:23:58.93\00:24:03.51 restoration to bring us all the way back. 00:24:03.71\00:24:07.51 Is the sanctuary relevant, friends, for Christians? 00:24:07.71\00:24:11.65 You'd better believe it. 00:24:11.85\00:24:13.25 It is our reference point for understanding 00:24:13.45\00:24:17.59 the plan of salvation. 00:24:17.75\00:24:19.09 Now in Revelation chapter 22 and verse 5 00:24:20.26\00:24:24.33 we see a description of the result of God's plan 00:24:25.03\00:24:30.77 of restoration. Revelation chapter 22. 00:24:30.97\00:24:36.04 This is the last chapter in the Bible. 00:24:36.91\00:24:40.34 Revelation chapter 22 and verse 5. 00:24:41.18\00:24:43.45 It says: "There shall be no night there. 00:24:46.41\00:24:49.28 They need no lamp nor the light of the sun 00:24:49.88\00:24:54.32 for the Lord their God gives them light. " 00:24:54.92\00:24:59.13 Let's actually go back to verse 3. 00:24:59.33\00:25:01.23 Verse 3: "And there shall be no more curse 00:25:01.43\00:25:04.60 but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it 00:25:05.00\00:25:08.90 and they shall see His... " What? 00:25:09.30\00:25:11.74 "and they shall see His face. " 00:25:11.94\00:25:14.51 Verse 4: "And they shall see His face. " 00:25:14.71\00:25:16.68 Now this is unprecedented. 00:25:16.88\00:25:18.85 "They shall see His face. " 00:25:19.05\00:25:21.28 We can see that the plan of salvation has been 00:25:21.68\00:25:24.35 restored all the way back to where Adam and Eve were. 00:25:24.55\00:25:27.66 The Bible tells us that in heaven we shall see His face 00:25:27.82\00:25:31.66 AND "His name shall be on their foreheads. " 00:25:32.06\00:25:36.33 Now the frontal lobe - the prefrontal cortex - 00:25:36.53\00:25:39.20 is where the character resides. And the name of God 00:25:39.40\00:25:43.24 is indicative of the character of God. 00:25:43.47\00:25:46.07 Now this is not literally saying that there's going to be 00:25:46.27\00:25:48.51 a stamp with Yahweh on our forehead. 00:25:48.71\00:25:51.78 This is indicating that there's going to be a transformation 00:25:51.98\00:25:56.28 in the people that God allows to fulfill His process 00:25:56.48\00:26:01.02 of restoration. That in the end, His name, 00:26:01.22\00:26:04.53 His character, is going to be in our minds and on our hearts. 00:26:04.73\00:26:09.66 And as a result of this plan of restoration 00:26:09.86\00:26:13.27 we shall be able to see the face of God. 00:26:13.47\00:26:17.81 Isn't God good? Amen! 00:26:18.01\00:26:19.44 Praise God for His complete plan of restoration. 00:26:19.64\00:26:24.58 So we can see in the book of Genesis Eden was lost. 00:26:24.78\00:26:28.65 The communion with God was lost. 00:26:29.05\00:26:32.45 But in the sanctuary we can see that God's plan 00:26:33.29\00:26:36.09 is to bring us all the way back. 00:26:36.29\00:26:38.86 And in Revelation chapter 22 and verse 4 00:26:39.06\00:26:41.50 He will be successful in His plan 00:26:41.70\00:26:46.47 because His name will be on our foreheads 00:26:46.70\00:26:50.21 and we will be able to see the face of God. 00:26:50.61\00:26:53.94 The sanctuary shows us God's plan of restoration 00:26:55.11\00:26:58.08 but I contend this evening 00:26:58.38\00:27:02.42 that it does even more than that. 00:27:02.62\00:27:05.39 You see, the sanctuary provides a roadmap 00:27:05.79\00:27:10.36 for where Jesus is in the plan of salvation. 00:27:10.76\00:27:15.56 It provides a reference point for where Jesus is. 00:27:16.46\00:27:20.07 We just heard a powerful message from Pastor John Bradshaw 00:27:20.27\00:27:24.11 on the Lamb of God. 00:27:24.31\00:27:26.34 And I want to invite you to turn with me to John chapter 1 00:27:26.78\00:27:29.34 and verse 29. John chapter 1 and verse 29. 00:27:29.54\00:27:35.15 Here we see the introduction of Jesus by John the Baptist. 00:27:35.35\00:27:38.75 And it is the most important introduction 00:27:39.15\00:27:43.29 of the Messiah to the Jews. 00:27:43.73\00:27:46.80 John chapter 1 and verse 29. 00:27:47.40\00:27:50.67 This is the introduction of Jesus Christ the Messiah 00:27:52.63\00:27:56.34 to His own people. John chapter 1 verse 29: 00:27:56.54\00:28:00.61 "The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him 00:28:00.81\00:28:05.78 and said: 'Behold the Lamb of God 00:28:05.98\00:28:11.12 who takes away the sin of the world. ' " 00:28:11.32\00:28:15.86 Now if the Jews would have just studied this introduction 00:28:16.59\00:28:21.23 they wouldn't have missed the Messiah. 00:28:21.63\00:28:24.17 I mean, this introduction gives the function and the purpose 00:28:24.77\00:28:29.77 of Jesus in coming to earth. "Behold the Lamb of God 00:28:30.01\00:28:33.68 who takes away the sins of the world. " 00:28:33.88\00:28:35.54 And the role and the function of Jesus was sitting right there 00:28:35.74\00:28:41.08 in Jerusalem because every day lambs were being slaughtered. 00:28:41.28\00:28:45.25 In Leviticus chapter 4 we see how the lamb would be brought 00:28:45.55\00:28:49.39 into the sanctuary. The sinner would places his hands on top 00:28:49.59\00:28:52.73 of the head of the lamb indicating that the sins were 00:28:52.93\00:28:56.33 being transferred from the person to the lamb. 00:28:56.53\00:28:58.87 The sinner with his own hand would slit the throat 00:28:59.07\00:29:03.00 of the lamb from ear to ear. 00:29:03.20\00:29:05.17 The priest would be there to catch the blood. 00:29:05.37\00:29:07.98 So the sins would be transferred from the sinner to the lamb 00:29:08.28\00:29:11.95 to the blood. And then the priest would take that blood 00:29:12.15\00:29:16.22 into the sanctuary and sprinkle it before the veil 00:29:16.42\00:29:20.22 or place it on the horns of the altar. 00:29:20.42\00:29:23.02 So you can see that the sins of Israel 00:29:23.22\00:29:26.96 were being transferred from the person to the lamb 00:29:27.13\00:29:30.80 to the blood to the sanctuary. 00:29:31.00\00:29:34.84 That was the daily service. 00:29:35.87\00:29:37.84 Once a year they would have a yearly service - 00:29:38.04\00:29:42.51 the Day of Atonement - where all the records 00:29:42.71\00:29:45.61 of the forgiven sins of Israel would be cleansed from 00:29:45.81\00:29:48.95 the sanctuary. That's a whole other discussion. 00:29:49.15\00:29:52.45 But if the Jews would have understood this 00:29:52.85\00:29:55.89 they would not have missed the Messiah. 00:29:56.09\00:30:01.00 The only way to understand John's introduction 00:30:02.16\00:30:08.14 is if we wear our sanctuary glasses. 00:30:08.54\00:30:13.34 Did you know that all of us are wearing glasses right now? 00:30:14.88\00:30:19.88 We sometimes call them hermeneutical glasses. 00:30:21.98\00:30:26.25 In other words, when we approach scripture 00:30:26.86\00:30:29.36 there are three factors, broadly speaking, that are in play. 00:30:29.56\00:30:34.30 You have the person, you have the text, 00:30:34.46\00:30:36.53 and then you have the methodology. 00:30:36.93\00:30:39.03 We tend to focus in Biblical interpretation 00:30:39.23\00:30:41.44 on methodology... and that's important. We should have 00:30:41.64\00:30:43.84 the right method in interpreting scripture. 00:30:44.04\00:30:46.61 We should also be sola scriptura. Amen? 00:30:47.01\00:30:49.74 The Bible and the Bible alone. 00:30:49.98\00:30:51.61 But one thing that we do not recognize all the time 00:30:52.01\00:30:55.08 is that all of us when we come to scripture 00:30:55.28\00:30:57.62 we are coming with certain presuppositions. 00:30:57.82\00:31:00.89 We are coming with certain assumptions and biases. 00:31:01.29\00:31:05.13 All of us are wearing some glasses, 00:31:05.33\00:31:07.93 and our culture - being American - all of these things 00:31:08.10\00:31:12.17 skew and taint our interpretation of scripture. 00:31:12.37\00:31:16.37 And that is why we need to even be humble with our assumptions 00:31:16.57\00:31:21.74 and allow the Bible to refine those presuppositions 00:31:21.94\00:31:26.15 and assumptions. I contend today - 00:31:26.35\00:31:30.25 this evening - that the Bible is telling us 00:31:31.39\00:31:35.49 that if we are going to truly understand the work of Jesus 00:31:35.89\00:31:40.30 Christ we need to have on sanctuary presuppositions. 00:31:40.50\00:31:46.43 A sanctuary lens as it were. 00:31:47.77\00:31:50.84 A sanctuary hermeneutic that we need to have on 00:31:51.07\00:31:54.64 in order to understand scripture. 00:31:54.84\00:31:57.48 And the issue with the Jews was that they believed in the 00:31:57.88\00:32:01.45 sanctuary as a doctrine 00:32:01.65\00:32:03.82 but they were not using the sanctuary lens. 00:32:04.32\00:32:07.79 There's a fundamental difference between the two. 00:32:08.19\00:32:10.76 If you were to ask a first- century Jew: "Look, do you 00:32:10.96\00:32:13.70 believe in the sanctuary? " "Yes! " 00:32:13.90\00:32:16.03 They would die for the sanctuary, 00:32:16.23\00:32:17.80 but they were not using the sanctuary as their interpretive 00:32:18.20\00:32:21.80 key for understanding the gospel. 00:32:22.00\00:32:24.07 They had switched lenses. 00:32:24.27\00:32:26.94 They had replaced their sanctuary glasses 00:32:27.14\00:32:30.25 with liberation theology: 00:32:30.45\00:32:33.28 a popular theology of the day 00:32:33.78\00:32:36.85 that the Messiah would come and deliver them from the Romans. 00:32:37.05\00:32:41.52 And because of these glasses they so missed this introduction 00:32:41.72\00:32:47.66 of Jesus Christ. And the consequences of that 00:32:47.86\00:32:50.70 was they ended up killing the Son of God. 00:32:50.90\00:32:54.07 And I fear, friends, today that we as a people 00:32:54.80\00:32:59.41 are in danger of making the same mistake that the Jews did 00:32:59.81\00:33:04.85 over 2,000 years ago 00:33:05.05\00:33:06.55 because we believe in the sanctuary as a doctrine... 00:33:07.62\00:33:11.99 and I believe it as well. But I believe that the sanctuary 00:33:12.19\00:33:17.43 is more than a doctrine. 00:33:17.63\00:33:20.50 It is to be our interpretive key 00:33:20.70\00:33:24.03 for understanding the gospel and the work of Christ. 00:33:24.23\00:33:28.60 And I contend that many of the gospel wars 00:33:29.00\00:33:33.44 that we go through today 00:33:33.64\00:33:35.68 is because individuals have switched lenses. 00:33:35.88\00:33:40.72 They've had a switching of their hermeneutics 00:33:41.12\00:33:44.42 and have imported popular theology for understanding 00:33:44.62\00:33:48.49 the gospel... and have thus come to different conclusions. 00:33:48.69\00:33:52.43 Some of you may be thinking: "You know, David, 00:33:54.03\00:33:56.70 I can understand using the sanctuary 00:33:57.10\00:34:00.17 as a hermeneutic, as a key for understanding Jesus 00:34:00.37\00:34:04.81 at the cross. " But perhaps some people believe that 00:34:05.01\00:34:09.61 "Look, after the cross we don't need to use the sanctuary 00:34:09.81\00:34:12.78 as a hermeneutic any more because Jesus was the Lamb. 00:34:12.98\00:34:16.02 He is no longer the Lamb. We're New Testament Christians 00:34:16.22\00:34:18.92 now. That was the hermeneutic of the Old Testament; 00:34:19.12\00:34:21.72 now we need a different lens, we need a different interpretive 00:34:21.92\00:34:26.13 key. " And I want to invite you to turn with me to 00:34:26.33\00:34:28.93 the book of Hebrews. Hebrews chapter 8 00:34:29.13\00:34:31.60 verses 1 and 2. 00:34:31.80\00:34:33.34 Hebrews chapter 8 and verses 1 and 2. 00:34:34.10\00:34:38.57 Hebrews... written by Paul. New Testament author. 00:34:38.77\00:34:41.81 Paul wrote the majority of the New Testament. 00:34:42.21\00:34:45.48 And here in Hebrews chapter 8 verses 1 and 2 00:34:45.68\00:34:49.22 he makes a stunning statement that has implications in regards 00:34:49.42\00:34:53.66 to the sanctuary. Hebrews 8:1-2. 00:34:53.86\00:34:58.63 "Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: 00:34:59.03\00:35:03.47 we have such a High Priest 00:35:03.67\00:35:07.04 who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty 00:35:07.24\00:35:11.97 in the... " What? "in the heavens. " 00:35:12.17\00:35:14.38 Listen to verse 2: "A minister 00:35:14.78\00:35:17.65 of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle 00:35:17.81\00:35:21.88 which the Lord erected and not man. " 00:35:22.08\00:35:26.25 First of all, Paul says that there IS a heavenly sanctuary. 00:35:26.45\00:35:32.43 Secondly, he says that Jesus has switched roles 00:35:32.63\00:35:38.37 from being the Lamb to the High Priest 00:35:38.57\00:35:41.84 and He's ministering in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:35:42.44\00:35:45.61 In other words, the implication of this statement 00:35:45.81\00:35:49.28 by Paul should not be missed. 00:35:49.48\00:35:51.08 Paul is not switching lenses after the cross. 00:35:51.48\00:35:55.72 Paul is keeping in continuity just as the sanctuary is 00:35:55.92\00:35:59.69 central for understanding the Lamb, the sanctuary is as 00:35:59.89\00:36:03.76 essential for understanding the function of Jesus 00:36:03.96\00:36:07.50 after the cross in heaven! 00:36:07.66\00:36:10.70 In other words, if we are going to understand what Jesus 00:36:10.90\00:36:14.04 is doing after the cross, 00:36:14.24\00:36:16.91 it is impossible to do that without the sanctuary. 00:36:17.31\00:36:21.41 Paul is saying we need to keep the same hermeneutical key 00:36:21.81\00:36:26.41 for understanding Christ at the cross 00:36:26.82\00:36:29.42 and for understanding Jesus as our High Priest. Amen? 00:36:29.82\00:36:34.49 Amen. We are not to switch lenses. 00:36:34.69\00:36:37.13 We are to keep the same roadmap. 00:36:37.53\00:36:40.43 Keep the same hermeneutical key. 00:36:40.63\00:36:44.43 Hebrews 9:11-12: "But Christ came as the High Priest 00:36:44.63\00:36:48.00 of good things to come with a greater and more perfect 00:36:48.20\00:36:51.04 tabernacle not made with hands 00:36:51.24\00:36:54.04 that is... not of this creation. " 00:36:54.24\00:36:57.31 The Bible is clear: there is a heavenly sanctuary 00:36:57.51\00:37:00.08 and Jesus is there as our High Priest. 00:37:00.28\00:37:04.12 It's impossible to understand this reference 00:37:04.52\00:37:07.29 without our sanctuary perspective. 00:37:07.49\00:37:09.92 I want to read a statement from the book Great Controversy 00:37:11.43\00:37:14.56 page 489. 00:37:14.93\00:37:16.77 When I first read this I was astounded 00:37:16.97\00:37:20.44 at the implications of this statement. Listen to this. 00:37:20.84\00:37:23.51 Great Controversy 489: 00:37:23.71\00:37:25.64 "The intercession of Christ 00:37:26.04\00:37:29.24 in man's behalf in the sanctuary above 00:37:29.44\00:37:33.25 is AS ESSENTIAL to the plan of salvation 00:37:33.92\00:37:38.25 as was His death upon the cross. " 00:37:38.45\00:37:41.49 Now let me read that again. 00:37:41.89\00:37:43.22 Did you get that? Let me read that again. 00:37:43.26\00:37:44.79 "The intercession of Christ in man's behalf 00:37:45.19\00:37:49.36 in the sanctuary above is AS ESSENTIAL 00:37:49.56\00:37:52.90 to the plan of salvation as was His death upon the cross. " 00:37:53.10\00:37:59.04 Our evangelical friends 00:37:59.84\00:38:02.14 uplift the cross, and I agree with uplifting the cross. 00:38:05.51\00:38:11.29 You can see that in the flow of the sanctuary 00:38:11.49\00:38:14.76 if the cross doesn't happen the rest of the sanctuary 00:38:14.96\00:38:18.79 doesn't happen either. 00:38:18.99\00:38:20.63 Blood is essential for the rest of the service to take place. 00:38:21.00\00:38:25.60 But here we can see that the ministry of Jesus as a 00:38:26.67\00:38:29.54 High Priest is as essential 00:38:29.74\00:38:33.81 as His sacrifice for us on Calvary. 00:38:34.01\00:38:37.98 We can see that understanding Jesus at the cross 00:38:39.15\00:38:41.82 we must use the sanctuary. 00:38:42.22\00:38:43.79 Understanding the ascension of Jesus and going to heaven 00:38:43.99\00:38:48.92 as a High Priest we must use the sanctuary. 00:38:49.12\00:38:51.53 And I want to read another statement from the book 00:38:51.73\00:38:53.40 Great Controversy 423. 00:38:53.60\00:38:55.40 "The subject of the sanctuary was the key 00:38:55.60\00:38:59.50 which unlocked the mystery of the Disappointment of 1844. 00:38:59.70\00:39:05.07 It opened to view a complete system of truth 00:39:05.47\00:39:11.01 connected and harmonious showing that God's hand 00:39:11.21\00:39:16.52 had directed the Great Advent Movement and revealing 00:39:16.72\00:39:20.99 present duty as it brought to light the position 00:39:21.16\00:39:24.93 and work of His people. " 00:39:25.13\00:39:27.83 Remember the Disappointment of 1844? 00:39:28.30\00:39:30.67 "2,300 days then the sanctuary will be cleansed. " 00:39:32.53\00:39:35.47 They had the right date but the wrong event. 00:39:35.67\00:39:37.34 And through the understanding of the sanctuary 00:39:38.47\00:39:42.38 a movement was born called Adventism. Amen? 00:39:42.58\00:39:47.42 And it was because the early pioneers 00:39:47.82\00:39:52.92 rediscovered what had been lost down through the centuries 00:39:53.89\00:39:57.66 the relevance of the sanctuary as the interpretive key 00:39:57.86\00:40:01.10 for understanding the work of Christ. 00:40:01.30\00:40:04.03 And notice the language here. 00:40:04.23\00:40:06.27 "The subject of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked 00:40:06.47\00:40:10.77 the mystery of the Disappointment of 1844. " 00:40:10.94\00:40:13.44 In other words, to understand the work of Jesus at the cross 00:40:13.64\00:40:16.31 we need the sanctuary. To understand the work of 00:40:16.51\00:40:18.41 Jesus in the Holy Place as our High Priest 00:40:18.61\00:40:20.92 we need the sanctuary. And then Jesus' transition 00:40:21.12\00:40:24.25 from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place 00:40:24.42\00:40:27.62 in the antitypical Day of Atonement 00:40:27.82\00:40:30.23 we must use the sanctuary as our interpretive key 00:40:30.43\00:40:34.96 for understanding what Jesus is doing right now. 00:40:35.16\00:40:39.87 If we throw out the sanctuary, friends, 00:40:43.64\00:40:48.31 we as a movement 00:40:49.91\00:40:52.31 can cease to exist. Amen! 00:40:54.08\00:40:57.52 We will just become a cultural entrapping, loving Vegelinks 00:40:58.69\00:41:03.09 and haystacks, and happen to go to church on Saturday. 00:41:03.29\00:41:08.76 Revelation chapter 14: "Fear God; give glory to Him. " 00:41:11.50\00:41:14.27 Why? "For the hour of His judgment has come. " 00:41:14.47\00:41:18.14 Sanctuary context. Amen! It gives us a purpose. 00:41:19.54\00:41:23.11 It gives us context 00:41:23.31\00:41:25.15 for where we are in the work of Jesus Christ. 00:41:25.35\00:41:28.82 I had the privilege and opportunity a few years ago 00:41:30.39\00:41:35.76 to go to Japan. 00:41:36.89\00:41:40.10 Now I'm Korean... never been to Asia before. 00:41:40.30\00:41:43.90 First time... Two, three years ago 00:41:44.27\00:41:47.74 had an invitation to Japan. 00:41:47.94\00:41:49.27 And decided to accept this invitation; went to Japan 00:41:49.34\00:41:53.64 but wasn't able to go to Korea. I hope to go some day. 00:41:53.84\00:41:56.01 I spoke about a week and then we tacked on some vacation time 00:41:58.15\00:42:01.22 and got on a bullet train south to the city of Kyoto. 00:42:01.42\00:42:05.95 Dropped off our luggage and then went back into the subway 00:42:06.76\00:42:10.66 station to go around the city of Kyoto to see some of the sights 00:42:10.86\00:42:14.20 that are there. That is when our vacation 00:42:14.36\00:42:18.20 became a relative nightmare 00:42:18.40\00:42:21.07 because we got lost for 3 hours in the subway station. 00:42:21.27\00:42:26.04 Now if you've ever been to a foreign country before 00:42:28.21\00:42:30.98 and cannot speak the language 00:42:31.18\00:42:33.68 and you're with your spouse 00:42:33.88\00:42:36.38 it can become quite frustrating. 00:42:36.58\00:42:38.79 And here we are wandering around this immense building. 00:42:38.99\00:42:43.39 It had elevators that went up like seven stories 00:42:43.59\00:42:46.70 and we're walking around this thing. Every time we tried to 00:42:46.90\00:42:49.56 speak to someone in English they would go like this. 00:42:49.76\00:42:52.10 And we were walking around getting frustrated 00:42:52.50\00:42:55.17 and just hungry. We were tired. 00:42:55.37\00:42:58.21 And then suddenly we had a hermeneutical awakening. 00:42:58.61\00:43:04.05 We found a map... 00:43:05.45\00:43:07.82 in English, praise God. Amen! 00:43:10.89\00:43:13.96 And using that map 00:43:14.36\00:43:17.06 it changed our understanding 00:43:18.06\00:43:21.36 and altered our experience. 00:43:21.76\00:43:26.00 Suddenly we went from confusion and frustration 00:43:26.40\00:43:30.91 to joy because we suddenly understood 00:43:31.11\00:43:36.24 where we were. 00:43:36.44\00:43:39.48 It was a hermeneutical revolution! 00:43:40.78\00:43:43.18 And we understood where we were in the context 00:43:43.39\00:43:46.35 and where we wanted to go. And we went everywhere! 00:43:46.55\00:43:49.19 Going to all the tourist attractions, and we joked 00:43:49.39\00:43:52.03 amongst ourselves afterward: "You know, we can become 00:43:52.23\00:43:55.56 the American tourist guide for Kyoto. " 00:43:55.76\00:43:58.53 We had mastered this thing. 00:44:00.47\00:44:03.10 And I want to tell you, friends: God has given us the map. 00:44:04.04\00:44:09.71 Amen? Amen! We ought to use it. 00:44:09.91\00:44:12.85 We ought to use it. It's in the sanctuary. 00:44:13.35\00:44:16.05 It's in kindergarten form. 00:44:16.25\00:44:18.49 It's a map for where Jesus is 00:44:18.89\00:44:22.09 and where He is in the plan of salvation. 00:44:22.29\00:44:24.23 Where God wants to bring us. And we cannot afford 00:44:24.43\00:44:27.83 as a people to replace the sanctuary glasses 00:44:28.00\00:44:31.70 with something else. Amen! 00:44:31.90\00:44:34.00 Some cultural phenomenon that is popular. And friends, 00:44:34.20\00:44:37.17 I just want to say very quickly: we need to be careful 00:44:37.37\00:44:39.37 what type of books we're reading. Amen! 00:44:39.57\00:44:43.08 We need to start reading the Bible and not books about the 00:44:43.31\00:44:45.31 Bible. Amen? Because believe it or not 00:44:45.51\00:44:48.25 when we read different authors 00:44:48.75\00:44:51.39 I'm not saying that there aren't things that are fruitful 00:44:51.99\00:44:54.99 for us, but we need to be very careful. Because as we read them 00:44:55.19\00:44:58.59 we are adopting their glasses. 00:44:58.79\00:45:01.13 Our presuppositions, our hermeneutics are becoming 00:45:02.56\00:45:06.27 altered and changed. 00:45:06.47\00:45:08.10 And that is why when we switch glasses... 00:45:08.50\00:45:11.47 and we may know even know that we've switched glasses 00:45:11.67\00:45:13.81 because we read this famous popular author that is 00:45:14.01\00:45:16.85 a New York Time best seller on Christianity... and we read it 00:45:17.05\00:45:20.22 and we adopt their glasses. And suddenly we come to scripture 00:45:20.42\00:45:23.05 and we start to re-interpret scripture just like the Jews did 00:45:23.25\00:45:27.26 2,000 years ago. We need to be very careful, friends. 00:45:27.46\00:45:31.43 What God has given us was heaven ordained. 00:45:32.29\00:45:36.40 Let's not switch. 00:45:38.20\00:45:39.90 The Bible is very clear. 00:45:40.97\00:45:43.10 The sanctuary is relevant for us especially 00:45:43.30\00:45:48.58 living before the soon and eminent return of Jesus Christ. 00:45:48.78\00:45:54.35 The sanctuary is Christ-centered. 00:45:55.35\00:46:00.22 I want to say that again. 00:46:00.72\00:46:02.42 The sanctuary is Christ-centered. 00:46:02.82\00:46:07.03 It is all about Jesus. 00:46:07.50\00:46:11.10 Jesus is the door of the sanctuary. 00:46:12.00\00:46:14.14 He says: "I am the door. 00:46:14.27\00:46:15.60 No man cometh to the Father except through Me. " 00:46:15.77\00:46:17.87 Jesus is the Lamb; Jesus is the High Priest. 00:46:18.07\00:46:22.68 The sanctuary is the most Christ-centered structure 00:46:23.18\00:46:28.12 in the Bible. 00:46:28.52\00:46:30.39 Furthermore, the sanctuary keeps us from creating 00:46:31.72\00:46:37.53 false dichotomy. 00:46:37.83\00:46:40.60 I see this all the time. 00:46:40.80\00:46:42.33 I hear of it. 00:46:42.73\00:46:44.27 Is it justification or is it sanctification? 00:46:44.47\00:46:48.54 Have you heard that before? 00:46:48.74\00:46:50.07 Is it what God does in you 00:46:50.27\00:46:53.38 or what God does for you? 00:46:53.98\00:46:57.35 Is it imputed or is it imparted righteousness? 00:46:57.65\00:47:03.12 And we hear these dichotomies that are presented. 00:47:03.52\00:47:07.09 And when we look at the sanctuary we can see 00:47:07.29\00:47:09.32 that it's not either/or, friends, it's both/and. 00:47:09.72\00:47:12.86 Amen! 00:47:13.06\00:47:14.36 We need to go through the sanctuary in the proper order. 00:47:14.40\00:47:17.30 And we get into the problem when we start emphasizing 00:47:17.50\00:47:20.47 sanctification and the people haven't even experienced 00:47:20.67\00:47:23.17 justification. And I want to tell you 00:47:23.61\00:47:28.04 that the issue when you study the history of Christianity 00:47:28.44\00:47:32.58 is that the evangelicals camped out in the courtyard. 00:47:33.52\00:47:38.22 That's where they stayed. 00:47:39.99\00:47:41.52 Our Catholic friends camped out in the Holy Place. 00:47:42.59\00:47:47.30 Sanctification through merit. 00:47:48.66\00:47:50.97 Through the seven sacraments. 00:47:51.17\00:47:53.40 Wesley came around and a revolutionary idea: 00:47:53.80\00:47:57.94 we need both justification and sanctification. 00:47:58.14\00:48:03.71 Adventists came along, 00:48:04.11\00:48:06.45 and the novel brilliance of the discovery of the sanctuary 00:48:06.85\00:48:12.69 was that we need the whole thing: 00:48:12.89\00:48:15.52 the courtyard, the Holy Place, and the Most Holy Place. 00:48:15.92\00:48:21.40 Amen! And friends, let's not put a discount 00:48:21.60\00:48:24.47 on the gospel. Amen? 00:48:24.67\00:48:27.14 I want to affirm the beauty and the foundational nature 00:48:27.34\00:48:31.24 of the cross and the sanctuary. 00:48:31.44\00:48:33.48 Please don't misunderstand me. 00:48:33.68\00:48:35.11 I'm not minimizing the cross. 00:48:35.31\00:48:37.28 It is foundational. 00:48:37.48\00:48:38.81 We need to uplift what Jesus wants to do 00:48:38.98\00:48:41.65 in sanctification and in character transformation. Amen? 00:48:41.85\00:48:45.39 And we should uplift what God wants to do - praise God - 00:48:45.79\00:48:48.79 in glorification because when we get to heaven 00:48:48.99\00:48:51.23 we're going to be glorified. 00:48:51.63\00:48:53.80 No more back pains; no more cancer; 00:48:54.00\00:48:56.16 no more funerals, praise God. 00:48:56.36\00:48:58.07 He's going to take our mortal bodies and give us immortality. 00:48:58.27\00:49:03.20 Amen? And that is the final phase of glorification. 00:49:03.44\00:49:08.84 God wants to bring us all the way back. 00:49:09.04\00:49:13.75 And it is through the sanctuary that we are prevented 00:49:13.95\00:49:18.39 from false dichotomies when it comes to the gospel. 00:49:18.59\00:49:23.86 It is not Jesus OR the sanctuary. 00:49:25.73\00:49:29.86 It is Jesus IN the sanctuary. 00:49:31.07\00:49:35.07 Let me say that again. It is not Jesus OR the sanctuary 00:49:35.97\00:49:39.21 it is Jesus IN His sanctuary. 00:49:39.61\00:49:43.35 And the sanctuary answers the fundamental question 00:49:43.75\00:49:47.55 what is Jesus doing right now? 00:49:47.75\00:49:53.36 What is Jesus doing right now? 00:49:54.42\00:49:58.09 And I believe, friends, that we as Seventh-day Adventists 00:49:58.29\00:50:02.50 with humility can go and knock on any door - 00:50:03.93\00:50:09.64 Baptist, Methodist, Roman Catholic - 00:50:09.84\00:50:14.14 and ask the question: "Do you love Jesus? " 00:50:14.31\00:50:17.61 And they say: "Yes, I do love Jesus. " 00:50:18.01\00:50:21.02 Then you can say: "Well you will want to know 00:50:21.42\00:50:23.85 what He is doing right now. " Amen! 00:50:24.05\00:50:27.96 And the sanctuary hermeneutic is the only way to understand 00:50:28.16\00:50:31.99 what Jesus is doing right now. 00:50:32.39\00:50:35.10 It answers the fundamental question: 00:50:35.50\00:50:38.57 "Why are we still here 00:50:38.77\00:50:41.20 2,000 years after the cross? " 00:50:41.40\00:50:43.74 "If everything was completed at the cross, 00:50:44.14\00:50:46.81 why are we still here? What is Jesus doing in heaven? " 00:50:47.01\00:50:51.05 The sanctuary answers this question 00:50:51.25\00:50:53.38 and gives us this framework for what Jesus has done, 00:50:53.58\00:50:57.12 is doing, and will do. 00:50:57.32\00:50:59.72 It is to be our framework for understanding 00:50:59.92\00:51:03.02 the work and the function of Jesus Christ. 00:51:03.22\00:51:07.50 The sanctuary is to be our interpretive key 00:51:07.73\00:51:12.13 for understanding the gospel. 00:51:12.33\00:51:15.04 One of my professors, Dr. Fernando Canale, 00:51:16.60\00:51:20.18 professor emeritus of theology and philosophy 00:51:20.38\00:51:22.74 at Andrews Theological Seminary 00:51:22.94\00:51:24.45 contends that the sanctuary is being replaced 00:51:25.85\00:51:30.85 by evangelical tradition. 00:51:30.99\00:51:33.72 And he says that this subtle redefinition 00:51:35.99\00:51:40.36 of placing the sanctuary from being our hermeneutical key 00:51:40.56\00:51:44.50 to a distinctive doctrine - 00:51:44.70\00:51:47.07 this is a subtle shift that is taking place - and he says 00:51:47.27\00:51:50.97 that this subtle shift has theological consequences. 00:51:51.17\00:51:55.71 It has consequences to change the very identity 00:51:56.64\00:52:00.52 and fabric of who we are as Seventh-day Adventists. 00:52:00.92\00:52:06.89 And I picked up a book not too long ago 00:52:07.46\00:52:09.36 talking about different versions of the gospel 00:52:09.56\00:52:11.89 in the church. And there were four different versions 00:52:12.09\00:52:16.30 of the gospel that were illustrated in this book. Four! 00:52:16.50\00:52:19.10 And it should not come as a surprise to us that 00:52:20.30\00:52:23.07 as we are living in the very end of time 00:52:23.27\00:52:25.21 that the devil hates the sanctuary and wants 00:52:25.61\00:52:30.11 this notion of the sanctuary being our frame of reference 00:52:30.31\00:52:34.72 for understanding what Jesus is doing 00:52:34.92\00:52:36.75 be replaced by popular theology. 00:52:36.95\00:52:40.52 When you study Adventist history 00:52:41.32\00:52:43.49 you see that every generation - every 30-40 years... 00:52:43.69\00:52:49.03 Dr. Richard Davidson did a brilliant study 00:52:49.23\00:52:51.60 from a historical perspective sharing how every 30-40 years 00:52:51.80\00:52:56.00 there is an unprecedented attack on the sanctuary. 00:52:56.20\00:53:00.98 Just in our generation there was an attack in 1979 00:53:02.51\00:53:06.58 and 1980. And sometimes God allows 00:53:06.82\00:53:10.59 false teachings to come into the church 00:53:10.79\00:53:13.56 so that we can become more rooted and grounded 00:53:13.76\00:53:17.13 in the Word of God. Amen? 00:53:17.33\00:53:20.50 We're living in an unprecedented time 00:53:20.90\00:53:22.76 and we cannot afford to replace the sanctuary 00:53:22.96\00:53:28.50 with something else. Amen? 00:53:28.70\00:53:31.04 Tonight, if you have not begun the process 00:53:33.94\00:53:37.85 of restoration, Jesus is standing at the door 00:53:38.25\00:53:42.42 of the sanctuary and inviting you to begin 00:53:42.62\00:53:46.15 the process. Amen? Steps to Christ page 31. 00:53:46.35\00:53:49.72 "As you approach the sanctuary, if you see your sinfulness 00:53:50.79\00:53:55.36 do not wait to make yourself better. 00:53:55.56\00:53:58.63 How many there are who think they are not good enough to 00:53:59.03\00:54:01.27 come to Christ. You expect to become better through your own 00:54:01.47\00:54:04.44 efforts. Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard 00:54:04.64\00:54:07.41 his spots? Then ye may also do good that are accustomed 00:54:07.61\00:54:11.51 to do evil. There is only help for us in God. 00:54:11.71\00:54:15.22 We must not wait for stronger persuasions, 00:54:15.42\00:54:19.79 for better opportunities, 00:54:19.99\00:54:22.09 for holier tempers. We can do nothing of ourselves. " 00:54:22.29\00:54:26.59 And she goes on in Steps to Christ page 31: 00:54:26.80\00:54:29.16 "We must come to Christ just as we are. " 00:54:29.36\00:54:35.00 The beauty of the sanctuary is Jesus is at the door 00:54:35.50\00:54:38.31 saying: "Look... just come. Just as you are. " 00:54:38.51\00:54:42.94 I know some millennial's believe in authenticity. 00:54:43.14\00:54:45.45 They say: "Look, I'm not going to come until I feel 00:54:45.65\00:54:47.52 like coming or until I have the right motivation. " 00:54:47.72\00:54:50.69 Well if you wait until then you will never come, friends. 00:54:50.89\00:54:53.86 The only way that you can come to Jesus 00:54:54.06\00:54:56.12 is just as you are. 00:54:56.52\00:54:59.66 It is the grace of God that draws you to the door of the 00:55:00.13\00:55:03.30 sanctuary to begin the process 00:55:03.50\00:55:06.43 through the courtyard, through the Holy Place, 00:55:06.74\00:55:09.84 to the Most Holy Place. But it's important 00:55:10.04\00:55:12.77 that you just come. 00:55:12.97\00:55:15.84 When the leper came to Jesus over 2,000 years ago 00:55:16.24\00:55:18.98 in Matthew chapter 8 the only way that he could come 00:55:19.18\00:55:23.02 was as a leper. 00:55:23.42\00:55:26.29 That was the only way that man could come to Jesus. 00:55:27.39\00:55:31.56 He could have put on a three-piece suit. 00:55:32.29\00:55:34.10 He could have combed his hair. 00:55:34.30\00:55:36.23 He could have put on all of these things to try to 00:55:36.63\00:55:39.63 mask the reality that he was a leper. 00:55:39.83\00:55:42.37 But the only way that he could come 00:55:42.77\00:55:45.01 was as a defiled leper. 00:55:45.87\00:55:48.71 Jesus, the Bible tells us, reached out His hand 00:55:49.61\00:55:52.71 and touched him. The beauty of that story 00:55:52.91\00:55:57.15 is that although the leper came to Jesus just the way that he 00:55:57.55\00:56:02.52 was he did not leave just the way that he came. 00:56:02.72\00:56:07.93 Amen? He left that presence 00:56:08.10\00:56:12.53 of glory a new man... a new creature. 00:56:12.73\00:56:17.31 And as Jesus said those words 00:56:17.67\00:56:20.08 "I am willing... be thou clean" 00:56:20.28\00:56:23.85 it was an illustration of the nature of the gospel. 00:56:24.05\00:56:26.72 The Bible tells us immediately that man was cleansed. 00:56:26.92\00:56:31.35 When we are justified, when we are forgiven, 00:56:31.75\00:56:34.66 it's immediate. 00:56:34.86\00:56:36.42 Sanctification... that's the work of a lifetime 00:56:36.96\00:56:39.86 and that's by grace. 00:56:40.30\00:56:41.73 The important thing is, if we haven't started the process 00:56:41.93\00:56:45.57 let God start it. 00:56:45.77\00:56:49.00 If we are in the process, 00:56:49.20\00:56:50.94 let God complete it. Amen? 00:56:51.34\00:56:53.68 And may the God that started this work in us 00:56:54.08\00:56:56.85 be faithful to complete it in you and me. 00:56:58.08\00:57:02.28 Praise God for His glory. Amen. 00:57:02.48\00:57:05.29
