it was largely responsible

I grew up in a blue
collar town just four miles

The meat works
actually formed the backbone

town. About 1,500 men -

worked at this meat works.

And so the animals would
come in the front door whole

And then they would

supposed to catch the bad stuff

landing on a plate near mine

That meat works did
perform some good functions,

Where I worked in the
meat works was one of the

less glamorous places.

All of my brothers worked
at that same meat works...

I'm forgetting all

what happens in a fellmongery -

A fellmongery is that
department of the meat works

And so the skins will

smell... it just plain stinks!

didn't deal with cow skins.

When I got a hold of them

acid ate away at my fingers.

job was... and little more.

But then I got a promotion.

When Tom Raumati, my
boss, came over and said:

I was so glad. I knew I was
going to go up to one of these

highly-paid, low-effort jobs.

across the fellmongery.

So I stayed in that
place that smelled like death.

He moved me over to
a very responsible job:

a job where I graded the pelts.

And they'd bring me the
lamb skins or the sheep skins -

for any signs of imperfection.

Now on Sundays I'd
go to my local church.

There was a large crucifix

Back then, and God will
use almost anything He can

to speak to a person,

that crucifix spoke to me.

Not literally, but it spoke
to me. And I would look up there
