She is a woman of God. 00:01:26.21\00:01:29.35 She and her husband J.D. are precious people: 00:01:29.75\00:01:32.92 students of the Word that travel the world 00:01:33.32\00:01:37.09 sharing Jesus. Sharing the gospel of grace 00:01:37.29\00:01:40.06 and how God wants to transform our hearts and lives. 00:01:40.26\00:01:43.20 And she has impacted my life in incredible ways as well. 00:01:43.50\00:01:46.90 She's a woman of God and she lives what she teaches... 00:01:47.10\00:01:50.84 and that's the most important thing. 00:01:51.01\00:01:52.61 Her message this morning is God's Covenant Love. 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.78 But before she comes and ministers to us 00:01:55.98\00:01:58.15 we have a special duet from Tim Parton - he's already 00:01:58.95\00:02:02.45 seated over there at the piano. 00:02:02.65\00:02:03.99 He's is the general manager of our new Praise Him! music 00:02:04.12\00:02:07.56 channel, and Pastor John Lomacang is director 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.33 of world evangelism here at 3ABN. 00:02:10.53\00:02:13.50 And he is also the pastor... he's MY pastor: 00:02:13.90\00:02:16.43 the pastor of the Thompsonville SDA church. 00:02:16.63\00:02:19.43 And the song they're going to be doing is I Must Tell Jesus. 00:02:19.63\00:02:23.57 But before they come and minister to us 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.71 let's go to the Lord in prayer. 00:02:25.91\00:02:27.34 Father, we come before You and we ask right now 00:02:27.74\00:02:30.51 that you would give us ears to hear 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.75 and a heart that is open to receive Your message. 00:02:33.15\00:02:36.95 And we thank you in the precious and holy name of Jesus, 00:02:37.15\00:02:40.82 Amen. Amen! 00:02:41.09\00:02:42.69 I must tell Jesus 00:02:51.67\00:02:55.24 all of my trials; 00:02:55.70\00:02:59.91 I cannot bear these 00:03:00.58\00:03:04.51 burdens alone; 00:03:04.91\00:03:08.92 In my distress He 00:03:09.32\00:03:13.39 kindly will help me; 00:03:13.59\00:03:17.76 He ever loves and 00:03:18.36\00:03:22.23 cares for His own. 00:03:22.63\00:03:26.07 I must tell Jesus! 00:03:26.70\00:03:31.07 I must tell Jesus! 00:03:31.27\00:03:35.88 I cannot bear my 00:03:36.08\00:03:40.38 burdens alone; 00:03:40.78\00:03:44.79 I must tell Jesus! 00:03:45.19\00:03:49.39 I must tell Jesus! 00:03:49.59\00:03:54.23 Jesus can help me, 00:03:54.36\00:03:58.67 Jesus alone. 00:03:59.03\00:04:02.97 I must tell Jesus 00:04:03.44\00:04:07.41 all of my troubles; 00:04:07.81\00:04:12.45 He is a kind, 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.58 compassionate friend; 00:04:15.78\00:04:21.09 If I but ask Him 00:04:21.59\00:04:25.66 He will deliver, 00:04:25.86\00:04:30.13 Make of my troubles 00:04:30.43\00:04:34.57 quickly an end. 00:04:34.77\00:04:38.94 I must tell Jesus! 00:04:39.34\00:04:43.51 I must tell Jesus! 00:04:43.91\00:04:48.22 I cannot bear 00:04:48.62\00:04:51.45 my burdens alone; 00:04:51.65\00:04:56.59 I must tell Jesus! 00:04:57.39\00:05:01.93 I must tell Jesus! 00:05:02.33\00:05:06.67 Jesus can help me... 00:05:06.87\00:05:11.27 Jesus can help me... 00:05:11.67\00:05:15.64 Jesus can help me, 00:05:16.04\00:05:20.32 Jesus alone. 00:05:20.82\00:05:26.69 Amen and amen! Thank you for that beautiful song! 00:05:33.23\00:05:37.13 And how true... Jesus alone can help us. 00:05:37.60\00:05:41.00 Well, you all look really good this morning. 00:05:41.40\00:05:43.51 What did you think of the rain? 00:05:43.71\00:05:45.11 Yeah. You know what? I like the rain! 00:05:46.34\00:05:48.94 My hair doesn't but I like the rain! 00:05:49.14\00:05:52.05 Well, we are going to do an old-fashioned Bible study 00:05:52.45\00:05:56.05 this morning. I hope you have your Bibles with you 00:05:56.25\00:05:58.45 because, you know... I didn't do graphics. 00:05:58.65\00:06:00.99 I'm kind of... hmm... I have mixed feelings about graphics. 00:06:01.19\00:06:04.83 I think sometimes we depend too much upon graphics 00:06:05.03\00:06:08.43 although it is good for our television audience. 00:06:08.63\00:06:10.50 And we want to just welcome those of you 00:06:10.80\00:06:13.13 who are watching by TV or radio or on the Internet. 00:06:13.34\00:06:16.71 Please get your Bibles and join with us 00:06:17.11\00:06:19.87 because what we're going to talk about this morning 00:06:20.08\00:06:22.74 is something that is critical. 00:06:22.94\00:06:24.75 And I think if we under- stand it a little bit better - 00:06:24.95\00:06:28.22 it's a familiar topic - but if we understand it 00:06:28.42\00:06:31.29 a little bit better, I believe 00:06:31.49\00:06:33.89 that we will not have any problem 00:06:34.09\00:06:38.03 with obedience. We won't have any problem 00:06:38.23\00:06:41.03 with condemnation. 00:06:41.43\00:06:44.23 We won't have problems in not having assurance of salvation. 00:06:44.43\00:06:49.34 So let's go to the Lord in prayer. 00:06:49.74\00:06:51.51 Ah, heavenly Father, thank you for this day of life! 00:06:52.51\00:06:56.18 Thank you, Father, that we woke up this morning! 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.81 And thank you, Father, that you are our Maker 00:06:59.01\00:07:01.62 and our Creator, and that You desire the works of Your hands, 00:07:01.82\00:07:06.25 Father. We thank you, Father, for the gift of Jesus Christ, 00:07:06.45\00:07:10.36 the gift of Your Holy Spirit. 00:07:10.56\00:07:12.19 The gift of Your Word, Father. 00:07:12.59\00:07:14.46 And to know that Your grace, Father, has... 00:07:14.63\00:07:18.93 Your grace incorporates divine assistance 00:07:19.33\00:07:23.14 and supernatural power unto salvation. 00:07:23.34\00:07:26.01 Father, I pray in the name of Jesus: forgive us of our sins. 00:07:26.31\00:07:29.98 Just give us cleans hands and a pure heart. 00:07:30.38\00:07:32.78 I ask in the name of Jesus right now, Father, that 00:07:32.98\00:07:35.65 You would get me out of the way. That You would speak through me 00:07:35.85\00:07:39.32 as we read Your Word. 00:07:39.52\00:07:41.52 Send Your Holy Spirit to be our teacher. 00:07:41.92\00:07:45.06 In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:07:45.26\00:07:47.40 What we're going to talk about this morning 00:07:47.76\00:07:49.96 is God's covenant love. 00:07:50.17\00:07:52.73 The unifying theme of scripture is this: 00:07:52.93\00:07:56.87 God is a covenant maker 00:07:57.37\00:07:59.61 and God is a covenant keeper. 00:07:59.81\00:08:03.38 And His covenants define and establish 00:08:03.58\00:08:08.15 His relationship to mankind. 00:08:08.35\00:08:10.85 And over and over again we see 00:08:11.05\00:08:13.72 the heart of a loving God is this: 00:08:13.92\00:08:16.52 "I will be their God and they will be My people. " 00:08:16.76\00:08:21.93 That's what God is looking for. 00:08:22.13\00:08:24.37 And, you know, in the Old Testament - 00:08:24.57\00:08:27.14 during the Old Testament times - covenants were quite common. 00:08:27.54\00:08:31.71 What is a covenant? It is an oath-bound contract, 00:08:31.91\00:08:36.98 an oath-bound arrangement where one person 00:08:37.18\00:08:40.32 is contracting, basically, 00:08:40.72\00:08:43.99 to bless and serve another. 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.26 And what they did... You remember how they ratified 00:08:47.46\00:08:50.43 covenants in the Old Testament times? 00:08:50.63\00:08:53.60 They would sacrifice an animal. 00:08:54.00\00:08:56.97 The covenants were always ratified by blood. 00:08:57.93\00:09:02.27 And we see the same thing with God's covenant with people. 00:09:02.47\00:09:07.21 Now sometimes covenants were unilateral. 00:09:07.61\00:09:09.68 That meant that the other party 00:09:10.08\00:09:12.75 did not have to respond in any way. 00:09:12.95\00:09:15.52 Can we think of unilateral covenants that God gave us? 00:09:15.72\00:09:18.52 How about Noah? 00:09:18.72\00:09:20.09 When He gave Noah the covenant that it would not rain any more 00:09:20.42\00:09:24.49 what was the sign of the covenant? The rainbow. 00:09:24.69\00:09:27.40 So that was unilateral. 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.10 I mean, this is just God saying: "This is what I'm going to do. " 00:09:29.30\00:09:32.13 You don't have to do anything in response. 00:09:32.33\00:09:34.40 How about with David? The Davidic covenant 00:09:34.60\00:09:37.91 that David would always have someone from his lineage 00:09:38.21\00:09:41.84 sitting on the throne. Didn't have to do anything. 00:09:42.04\00:09:45.18 This is a covenant that God was going to do by Himself. 00:09:45.38\00:09:49.15 But sometimes covenants included a response 00:09:49.35\00:09:54.76 from the person with whom the covenant was being made. 00:09:54.96\00:09:58.56 And if you think about the ratification 00:09:58.76\00:10:01.50 we're going to look today how when God made a covenant 00:10:01.70\00:10:04.67 with Abraham He ratified it with blood. 00:10:04.87\00:10:08.37 This was the covenant that you will be justified by grace 00:10:08.57\00:10:12.67 through faith. And the covenant that he would have... 00:10:12.87\00:10:16.14 be the father of many, many nations. 00:10:17.31\00:10:19.81 When God made the old covenant 00:10:20.02\00:10:22.52 He ratified it with blood. They sacrificed. 00:10:22.72\00:10:26.19 And when God made the new covenant 00:10:26.59\00:10:28.59 how did He ratify the new covenant? 00:10:29.09\00:10:31.66 With the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:10:32.16\00:10:34.30 And so we are going to look at that. 00:10:34.46\00:10:36.46 But I also wanted to take this idea of signs. 00:10:36.70\00:10:40.20 There were always signs of the covenant. 00:10:40.40\00:10:43.04 What is the sign of the covenant of God's grace? 00:10:43.44\00:10:48.38 Do you know what it is? 00:10:49.64\00:10:51.31 Exodus 31:13. 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.65 God said: "I have given you the Sabbath Day 00:10:54.62\00:10:58.19 as a sign that I am the One who sanctifies you. " 00:10:58.39\00:11:04.39 See, it has always been sal- vation by grace through faith. 00:11:05.03\00:11:10.97 And as we look at the history of covenants today 00:11:11.47\00:11:14.10 we're going to understand that I hope in a better way. 00:11:14.27\00:11:17.17 What was the sign of the old covenant 00:11:17.57\00:11:20.88 with the book of the law and the book of Moses? 00:11:21.08\00:11:23.81 Circumcision. What is the sign of the new covenant? 00:11:24.71\00:11:28.35 Baptism. See... Jesus only instituted two ordinances 00:11:28.75\00:11:34.06 for the new covenant. 00:11:34.26\00:11:36.59 One was communion, which pointed to His death. 00:11:36.79\00:11:39.86 The other was baptism 00:11:40.26\00:11:42.86 which pointed to the burial and resurrection. 00:11:43.06\00:11:46.17 So there are always signs to God's covenants. 00:11:46.57\00:11:51.44 Now I used to believe - 00:11:51.84\00:11:55.54 and there's still many people who believe - 00:11:55.74\00:11:58.05 that the Old Testament - that the old covenant - 00:11:58.81\00:12:03.22 was salvation by works. 00:12:03.42\00:12:06.89 And I believed that the new covenant was salvation by grace. 00:12:07.82\00:12:12.06 You know, someone has said 00:12:12.46\00:12:14.46 preconceived opinions effectively insulate 00:12:15.30\00:12:19.67 the mind against truth. 00:12:19.87\00:12:22.17 And what you'll find as you're talking with so many people 00:12:22.57\00:12:26.98 who are just like me, growing up in a Sunday-keeping church... 00:12:27.18\00:12:30.91 I was taught all my life the commandments of God 00:12:31.08\00:12:34.45 were nailed to the cross. The Old Testament was not 00:12:34.65\00:12:37.72 important. And it took the Lord 00:12:37.92\00:12:43.06 when He called me to full-time ministry 00:12:43.26\00:12:45.33 He impressed upon my mind by the Holy Spirit 00:12:45.73\00:12:48.40 "Come sit at My feet. Forget what you think you know. 00:12:48.60\00:12:51.90 I will teach you. " And you know where He started me? 00:12:52.10\00:12:55.17 He started me on a study of the sanctuary. 00:12:55.57\00:12:58.57 Whooh! If we don't understand the sanctuary, 00:12:58.77\00:13:03.21 we're not going to understand the rest of God's Word. 00:13:03.45\00:13:08.08 Because when we look at things through the sanctuary... 00:13:08.38\00:13:12.85 the lens of sanctuary understanding 00:13:13.05\00:13:15.99 then we truly understand the ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:13:16.19\00:13:19.76 So the sanctuary is one of the most important doctrines 00:13:20.20\00:13:23.87 that we can know. So it took a lot of time 00:13:24.07\00:13:26.90 because I'm kind of a hard-headed person 00:13:27.10\00:13:28.94 but Biblical evidence disproved 00:13:29.44\00:13:33.48 the traditions that had been handed down to me. 00:13:33.68\00:13:36.38 You know, Jesus said: "You make void 00:13:36.81\00:13:39.41 the Word of God by your traditions of men. " 00:13:39.61\00:13:42.78 What I learned was that 2/3 00:13:42.98\00:13:46.19 of the first 5 books of the Bible... 00:13:46.39\00:13:49.22 Genesis through Numbers... 00:13:49.62\00:13:52.33 is a narrative of God's grace. 00:13:52.53\00:13:55.13 It is a narrative that shows the calling, the election, 00:13:55.63\00:13:59.83 salvation, the providential care of God for His people 00:14:00.14\00:14:04.04 Israel. And I discovered that salvation has always been 00:14:04.24\00:14:08.34 by grace through faith. 00:14:08.54\00:14:10.15 Righteousness has always been by faith. 00:14:10.35\00:14:14.58 In Isaiah 64 and verse 6 Isaiah says that our righteousness 00:14:14.78\00:14:20.56 is nothing more than filthy rags in front of Him. 00:14:20.96\00:14:24.46 How many of you have noticed that the closer you get to God 00:14:24.76\00:14:28.53 the more you recognize your own sin? 00:14:28.93\00:14:31.40 Because the beauty of the brightness of His light 00:14:31.60\00:14:36.07 helps us see. You know, this is why we should never be 00:14:38.31\00:14:41.34 judgmental. What did Paul say? 00:14:41.54\00:14:45.88 "Judge not that ye be not judged. " Amen? 00:14:46.08\00:14:49.12 I learned in Jeremiah 33 and verse 16 00:14:49.72\00:14:55.66 that it says: "The Lord, our righteousness. " 00:14:55.86\00:15:00.96 So the people of the Old Testament times 00:15:01.36\00:15:04.20 knew of God's grace. Please open your Bibles to 00:15:04.40\00:15:07.14 II Timothy chapter 1 and verse 9. 00:15:07.34\00:15:10.21 II Timothy 1:9. 00:15:10.61\00:15:13.78 What I hope to put to bed today during this Bible study... 00:15:14.64\00:15:19.08 Have you ever had anyone tell you that if you are trying 00:15:19.48\00:15:24.09 to walk in obedience that you are trying to be saved by works 00:15:24.29\00:15:28.29 and that you're legalistic? 00:15:28.49\00:15:29.82 That is so untrue. Untrue! 00:15:30.23\00:15:33.03 But let's look at II Timothy 1 and verse 9. 00:15:33.23\00:15:35.53 Paul writes: "Who has saved us... " Speaking of God... 00:15:35.93\00:15:40.04 "Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling. 00:15:40.24\00:15:44.51 Not according to our works but according to His own 00:15:44.71\00:15:49.24 purpose and grace which was given to us 00:15:49.44\00:15:54.12 in Christ Jesus... " When? 00:15:54.32\00:15:57.69 "before time began. " 00:15:58.09\00:16:01.82 The everlasting covenant of grace is God's promise 00:16:02.32\00:16:06.86 to save sinful humanity through the redemptive work 00:16:07.03\00:16:09.90 of Jesus Christ. This is a covenant of redemption, 00:16:10.10\00:16:13.84 His oath-bound promise that was established by God 00:16:14.04\00:16:18.24 before time began. And did you know that 00:16:18.44\00:16:21.18 physicists have now said... I say now. It's been about 00:16:21.38\00:16:24.05 twenty years ago I read this... 00:16:24.25\00:16:27.22 that they now say there was no time before the world began. 00:16:27.62\00:16:32.49 That's what the Bible has always said. 00:16:32.69\00:16:35.12 But His plan was to send Jesus Christ 00:16:35.59\00:16:39.86 to rescue fallen humanity and fulfill His plan 00:16:40.10\00:16:44.23 of giving us the gift of eternal life. 00:16:44.43\00:16:47.20 In Titus 1:12... excuse me... Titus 1:2 00:16:47.60\00:16:52.17 it say: "In hope of eternal life 00:16:52.37\00:16:54.48 which God - who cannot lie - 00:16:54.68\00:16:58.41 promised before time began. " 00:16:58.81\00:17:02.08 So we have the hope of eternal life. 00:17:02.68\00:17:06.25 Do we have immortality right now? 00:17:06.45\00:17:09.32 We don't? There's so many people out there who think we do! 00:17:10.46\00:17:14.36 But I Timothy 6:16 says that God ALONE is immortal. 00:17:14.73\00:17:20.54 And I Corinthians 15:51-55 00:17:20.94\00:17:24.77 explains to us that it is at the last trump 00:17:24.97\00:17:29.38 when Jesus returns to call forth His saints 00:17:29.58\00:17:33.82 from their graves... it is at THAT moment 00:17:34.02\00:17:36.89 that this mortal puts on immortality. 00:17:37.09\00:17:40.16 But before time began 00:17:40.36\00:17:43.06 God had the Calvary plan in mind. 00:17:43.26\00:17:45.96 Revelation 13:8 says 00:17:46.16\00:17:47.96 that Jesus was the Lamb who was slain from the foundations 00:17:48.16\00:17:52.73 of the earth. So, from the foundations of the world 00:17:52.93\00:17:56.77 we know that it is His blood 00:17:57.07\00:18:00.31 that will be the blood of the everlasting covenant 00:18:00.51\00:18:02.81 as Hebrews tells us. 00:18:03.01\00:18:04.55 It is Jesus and righteousness by faith - 00:18:04.75\00:18:09.05 salvation by grace - which is the everlasting gospel 00:18:09.25\00:18:13.02 that Revelation 14:6 tells us. 00:18:13.22\00:18:15.42 So what God's covenants do 00:18:16.12\00:18:18.49 is they are a progressive revelation 00:18:18.69\00:18:22.63 of God's plan of salvation. 00:18:22.83\00:18:25.53 He's unfolding the eternal plan through His various 00:18:25.73\00:18:30.61 covenants. And remember this: 00:18:30.81\00:18:32.87 both the Old and the New Testament say 00:18:33.07\00:18:35.91 we cannot save ourselves. 00:18:36.11\00:18:37.88 Both the Old and the New Testament clearly say 00:18:38.28\00:18:41.48 "salvation belongs to the Lord. " 00:18:41.68\00:18:43.89 So let's consider some of His covenants real quickly. 00:18:44.29\00:18:47.46 These are covenants of grace, 00:18:48.42\00:18:50.83 and it began with Adam and Eve. 00:18:50.99\00:18:53.26 When God created Adam and Eve in His own image 00:18:53.50\00:18:56.93 He implanted in them His moral character. 00:18:57.60\00:19:02.84 It was natural to do His will. 00:19:03.04\00:19:05.81 They understood God's law. 00:19:06.01\00:19:09.34 It was just part of them. 00:19:09.54\00:19:11.85 Now God has a specific command 00:19:12.05\00:19:16.18 that He made to them saying: 00:19:16.38\00:19:18.49 "Do not eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. " 00:19:18.69\00:19:22.39 Why not? 00:19:22.59\00:19:23.96 Because that meant that you are now, when you eat of that 00:19:24.56\00:19:29.53 fruit, you are going to decide what's good for you; 00:19:29.73\00:19:32.70 you're going to decide what's bad for you. 00:19:32.90\00:19:35.37 It's like you were becoming God. 00:19:35.67\00:19:37.81 And that's why when He said "If you eat of this tree 00:19:38.01\00:19:40.98 you will surely die. " And Satan comes along and 00:19:41.14\00:19:44.28 says: "Ha, ha... no you won't! " 00:19:44.48\00:19:46.72 "You won't surely die... you'll become like God. " 00:19:46.92\00:19:50.19 "You can decide what's good for you. 00:19:50.39\00:19:53.46 You can decide what's bad for you. " 00:19:53.66\00:19:56.09 Isn't that what the world is doing today? 00:19:56.39\00:19:58.89 It is! So they were deceived by Satan. 00:19:59.29\00:20:03.37 And the fall of mankind... when they fell 00:20:03.57\00:20:08.00 they recognized they were naked. 00:20:08.20\00:20:10.51 They felt guilt and shame for the first time 00:20:10.91\00:20:13.74 and they actually hid from God. 00:20:13.94\00:20:16.71 But God established a substitutionary sacrifice. 00:20:17.11\00:20:21.35 Let's turn to Genesis 3:15. 00:20:21.55\00:20:23.95 Because as God establishes 00:20:24.29\00:20:28.36 this substitutionary sacrifice 00:20:28.56\00:20:31.13 He shows them - He's fore- shadowing - the redemptive work 00:20:31.96\00:20:36.06 of Christ. So Genesis 3:15 00:20:36.26\00:20:39.23 where God is announcing the everlasting covenant of grace 00:20:39.43\00:20:43.10 that was put into action as soon as man sinned 00:20:44.37\00:20:47.74 to restore the fellowship in obedience. 00:20:47.94\00:20:49.84 Genesis 3:15. 00:20:50.08\00:20:52.01 And God says: "And I will put enmity... " 00:20:53.01\00:20:57.02 a deep-rooted hatred... "between you and the woman 00:20:57.22\00:20:59.35 and between your seed and her Seed. 00:20:59.55\00:21:01.09 He shall bruise your head 00:21:01.39\00:21:04.33 and you shall bruise His heel. " 00:21:04.53\00:21:06.80 He's speaking to the serpent 00:21:07.20\00:21:09.13 who deceived God's people 00:21:09.53\00:21:12.70 and He is saying there's going to be enmity. 00:21:12.90\00:21:16.44 "This is the Great Controversy 00:21:16.67\00:21:18.31 between you and between My Son Christ Jesus, the Seed. " 00:21:18.54\00:21:24.05 Which we will look at. Galatians 3:19 says 00:21:24.25\00:21:27.32 He is the Seed. He says: "OK, serpent, 00:21:27.52\00:21:31.45 you're going to bruise His heel but He will crush you 00:21:31.65\00:21:35.19 under His feet. " 00:21:35.39\00:21:36.89 So when God made this promise 00:21:37.29\00:21:40.90 then He had to do a sacrifice. 00:21:41.16\00:21:44.57 He had to sacrifice an animal to cover their nakedness. 00:21:44.77\00:21:48.14 So that ratified the covenant with Adam. 00:21:48.54\00:21:51.94 Now turn to Genesis chapter 15. 00:21:52.24\00:21:56.24 No, no, no, no. Let' start with Genesis... Yeah, Genesis 00:21:56.54\00:21:59.71 chapter 15 when God made a covenant 00:21:59.95\00:22:03.39 with Abraham. 00:22:05.02\00:22:07.72 Genesis chapter 15, and we're going to look at verses 6-18. 00:22:07.92\00:22:11.86 So I'm going to be reading rather quickly. 00:22:12.06\00:22:14.30 Genesis 15 verses 6 through 18. 00:22:15.23\00:22:18.53 "And he... " speaking of Abraham... "believed in the Lord 00:22:19.77\00:22:22.64 and He accounted it... " He, God... "accounted it to Abraham 00:22:22.84\00:22:27.91 for righteousness. Then He said to him: 00:22:28.11\00:22:30.75 'I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur 00:22:30.95\00:22:33.48 and out of the Chaldeans to give you this land to inherit it. ' 00:22:33.68\00:22:38.29 And he said: 'Lord God, how shall I know 00:22:38.49\00:22:41.32 that I will inherit it? ' So He, the Lord, said 00:22:41.52\00:22:44.83 to Abraham: 'Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, 00:22:45.03\00:22:47.56 a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, 00:22:47.73\00:22:49.83 a turtledove and a young pigeon. ' 00:22:50.03\00:22:51.47 Then he brought all of these to Him 00:22:51.67\00:22:53.87 and He cut them in two down the middle 00:22:54.07\00:22:56.47 and placed each piece opposite the other. 00:22:56.67\00:22:59.27 But He did not cut the birds in two. 00:22:59.47\00:23:01.58 And when the vultures came down on the carcasses 00:23:01.78\00:23:03.75 Abram drove them away. 00:23:03.95\00:23:05.41 Now when the sun was going down 00:23:05.61\00:23:07.62 a deep sleep fell upon Abram... " 00:23:07.78\00:23:10.09 This is Abram before he was called Abraham... 00:23:10.29\00:23:13.56 "and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him. 00:23:13.96\00:23:19.46 Then He... " God... "said to Abram: 'Know certainly 00:23:19.66\00:23:23.10 that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not 00:23:23.33\00:23:25.97 theirs and will serve them. And they will be afflicted 00:23:26.17\00:23:29.97 for 400 years. ' " So God is telling him in advance 00:23:30.17\00:23:33.88 that they're going to be carried away to Egypt. 00:23:34.08\00:23:35.74 "And also the nation whom they serve I will judge 00:23:35.94\00:23:39.11 afterward. They shall come out with great possessions. 00:23:39.31\00:23:43.22 Now as for you: you shall go to your fathers 00:23:43.45\00:23:46.12 in peace. " He's saying "You shall die in peace. " 00:23:46.32\00:23:48.66 "You shall be buried at a good old age. 00:23:48.86\00:23:51.33 But in the fourth generation they shall return here 00:23:51.53\00:23:54.83 for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete. " 00:23:55.00\00:23:57.90 "And it came to pass when the sun went down and it was dark 00:23:58.10\00:24:01.24 that behold, there appeared a smoking oven 00:24:01.44\00:24:04.11 and a burning torch that passed between those pieces. 00:24:04.31\00:24:08.81 And on the same day the Lord made a covenant 00:24:09.01\00:24:12.45 with Abram. " So He is making a covenant. 00:24:12.65\00:24:16.02 He ratifies it, puts Abraham in a deep sleep. 00:24:16.22\00:24:19.65 And I believe this is when Abram saw 00:24:19.85\00:24:22.29 the day of Jesus. You know, remember when Jesus 00:24:22.49\00:24:25.76 told the Pharisees "Your father Abraham 00:24:25.96\00:24:28.46 has seen My day and was glad. " 00:24:28.66\00:24:31.43 I believe this is when God showed him 00:24:31.63\00:24:35.24 because He's making a covenant of grace with him. 00:24:35.44\00:24:38.57 And I believe this is when the Lord showed Abraham 00:24:38.77\00:24:41.98 what was going to happen. 00:24:42.18\00:24:44.05 Now what we want to do is turn to Galatians 3 00:24:44.25\00:24:48.35 so we can get the New Testament part of this. 00:24:48.55\00:24:51.32 Galatians 3, and we'll begin with verse 6. 00:24:51.52\00:24:54.42 So God is making this covenant with Abraham 00:24:55.36\00:24:58.83 that he will be the father of many... of all nations. 00:24:59.03\00:25:01.56 Blessed through the promised Seed... 00:25:01.76\00:25:04.17 the prophesied Seed of Jesus Christ. 00:25:04.33\00:25:06.74 That he would be justified by faith alone 00:25:06.94\00:25:10.24 not by works and he will receive the Holy Spirit. 00:25:10.44\00:25:13.41 So let's look at Genesis chapter 3, and we will begin 00:25:13.61\00:25:17.38 with verse 6. That's Galatians... thank you. 00:25:17.58\00:25:21.35 You know, it's amazing when you're talking 00:25:21.65\00:25:24.19 you think you say the right thing. 00:25:24.35\00:25:25.85 I appreciate that so much, sister. Thank you. 00:25:26.05\00:25:28.79 Galatians chapter 3 and we will begin with verse 6. 00:25:28.99\00:25:32.16 Galatians 3 and verse 6. 00:25:32.56\00:25:34.20 Paul is writing to the Galatians and he says: 00:25:35.40\00:25:37.80 "Just as Abraham believed God and it was accounted him 00:25:38.00\00:25:42.27 for righteousness. " That's righteousness by faith! 00:25:42.47\00:25:45.51 "Therefore know that only those who are of faith 00:25:45.91\00:25:50.15 are sons of Abraham. " 00:25:50.35\00:25:52.85 So that includes you and I. 00:25:53.05\00:25:55.12 "And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify 00:25:55.52\00:25:58.92 the Gentiles by faith. " What does it mean to 00:25:59.12\00:26:01.42 be justified? It means that you have been declared innocent. 00:26:01.62\00:26:06.49 That you cannot be charged with your sins. 00:26:06.73\00:26:11.00 It's when you have been set free from your past. 00:26:11.20\00:26:17.11 He says: "The scriptures, fore- seeing that God would justify 00:26:18.14\00:26:20.98 the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham 00:26:21.18\00:26:23.75 beforehand saying: 'In you all the nations 00:26:23.95\00:26:26.58 shall be blessed. ' So then those who are of faith 00:26:26.82\00:26:30.29 are blessed with believing Abraham. 00:26:30.49\00:26:32.95 For as many as are of the works of the law 00:26:33.15\00:26:36.59 are under the curse. " 00:26:36.83\00:26:38.99 Now, we haven't gotten to this covenant. 00:26:39.29\00:26:42.16 When he's speaking of the law here, he's speaking of 00:26:42.36\00:26:45.20 the old covenant - the book of the law 00:26:45.40\00:26:48.70 that was written by Moses that had the ceremonial 00:26:48.90\00:26:52.41 practices and regulations. 00:26:52.61\00:26:55.58 That had the civil laws in it. 00:26:55.78\00:26:58.05 So I'm going to prove that to you from the text here. 00:26:58.25\00:27:00.85 "For as many as are under the works of the law 00:27:01.18\00:27:04.89 are under the curse for it is written - 00:27:05.09\00:27:07.59 and now he's going to quote Deuteronomy 27:2- 00:27:07.76\00:27:11.73 "Cursed is everyone who does not continue 00:27:11.93\00:27:14.40 in all the things which are written in the book 00:27:14.60\00:27:18.77 of the law to do them. " 00:27:18.97\00:27:21.97 What Moses wrote as God dictated it to him 00:27:22.37\00:27:27.88 is the old covenant. 00:27:28.08\00:27:29.54 He wrote it, and they called it the book of the law... 00:27:29.74\00:27:32.71 the book of the covenant. 00:27:32.91\00:27:34.25 And we'll look at that in just a moment. 00:27:34.32\00:27:35.65 "But that no one is justified by the law... " 00:27:36.08\00:27:39.12 the book of the law, the old covenant... 00:27:39.32\00:27:41.66 "in the sight of God is evident. For the just 00:27:41.86\00:27:44.76 shall live by faith. Yet the law is not of faith 00:27:44.96\00:27:47.60 but the man who does them shall live by them. 00:27:47.76\00:27:50.33 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law. " 00:27:50.53\00:27:55.84 This book: God told Moses to put it on the side of the ark 00:27:56.54\00:28:00.91 that it would stand as a witness against them. 00:28:01.08\00:28:04.65 It had all the curses and all the blessings. 00:28:04.85\00:28:07.18 So he goes on once more and he says: 00:28:07.58\00:28:10.55 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law 00:28:10.75\00:28:12.49 having become a curse for us. 00:28:12.69\00:28:14.19 For it is written: 'cursed is everyone 00:28:14.39\00:28:16.69 who hangs on a tree. ' 00:28:16.89\00:28:18.23 That the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles 00:28:18.63\00:28:21.26 in Christ Jesus that we might receive 00:28:21.46\00:28:24.40 the promise of the Spirit through faith. " 00:28:24.60\00:28:28.84 Brethren, I believe... He said: "I speak in the manner 00:28:29.14\00:28:32.04 of men, though it is only a man's covenant. 00:28:32.24\00:28:35.01 Yet if it is confirmed no one annuls or adds to it. 00:28:35.21\00:28:38.25 Now to Abraham and his seed were promises made. 00:28:38.45\00:28:43.89 He does not say 'and his seeds' as of many 00:28:44.09\00:28:47.89 but as of one and to your Seed who is Christ. " 00:28:48.09\00:28:52.09 So the everlasting covenant is this covenant that was made 00:28:52.49\00:28:56.77 with Abraham that "you'll be justified by faith. " 00:28:56.97\00:29:00.07 And then he says: "And this I say: that the law... " 00:29:00.27\00:29:04.24 still speaking of the book of the law 00:29:04.41\00:29:06.84 which was 430 years later... "cannot annul the covenant 00:29:07.04\00:29:12.38 that was confirmed by God in Christ that it should 00:29:12.58\00:29:15.98 make the promise of no effect. 00:29:16.18\00:29:19.42 For if the inheritance is of the law it is no longer 00:29:19.62\00:29:22.19 a promise. But God gave it to Abraham 00:29:22.39\00:29:25.83 by promise. " So he goes on and then he starts 00:29:26.03\00:29:29.30 talking how the law was given to drive us to faith. 00:29:29.50\00:29:32.80 So let's unpack this just a little bit more. 00:29:33.20\00:29:35.07 Turn to Genesis chapter 26. 00:29:36.10\00:29:38.94 Genesis chapter 26 and verse 4. 00:29:39.34\00:29:43.01 Here we have... God has made the everlasting covenant 00:29:43.45\00:29:46.82 with Abraham: that we will be justified by faith, 00:29:47.02\00:29:50.29 that we will receive the promise of the Holy Spirit. 00:29:50.49\00:29:52.95 That it is all going to come through the Seed - capital S - 00:29:53.15\00:29:57.26 Jesus Christ. And some people say: "Yes! 00:29:57.56\00:30:03.33 We are saved by grace. We do not need to worry about 00:30:03.53\00:30:06.33 obedience. " Hmmm! 00:30:06.53\00:30:10.31 Let's see if Abraham understood it that way. 00:30:10.51\00:30:13.98 Let's look at Genesis chapter 26 00:30:14.38\00:30:17.21 and we'll begin with verse 4. 00:30:17.41\00:30:18.85 Genesis 26 and verse 4. 00:30:19.35\00:30:22.12 God is now speaking to Isaac. 00:30:22.52\00:30:25.15 Abraham has passed. 00:30:25.55\00:30:27.62 His life has expired. 00:30:28.69\00:30:30.89 But here's what God says to Isaac. 00:30:31.23\00:30:34.00 He is renewing the covenant that He made with Abraham. 00:30:34.36\00:30:38.63 He says: "I will make your descendants multiply 00:30:38.93\00:30:42.27 as the stars of the heaven. 00:30:42.47\00:30:44.47 I will give to your descendants all these lands 00:30:44.67\00:30:47.68 and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed. " 00:30:47.88\00:30:50.51 Same words that He said to Abraham, isn't it? 00:30:50.91\00:30:53.68 But now look at verse 5. 00:30:54.08\00:30:56.92 Why is God renewing the covenant? 00:30:57.12\00:31:00.86 "Because Abraham obeyed My voice 00:31:01.32\00:31:07.30 and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes 00:31:07.50\00:31:10.87 and My laws. " The covenant with Abraham 00:31:11.07\00:31:14.40 was conditioned upon obedience to God's voice. 00:31:14.60\00:31:19.61 There was no written word at the time of Abraham. 00:31:20.38\00:31:24.75 When we read Genesis - the story of Abraham - 00:31:25.55\00:31:29.65 it was written by Moses. 00:31:29.85\00:31:31.59 This is one of the first five books of the Bible 00:31:31.79\00:31:33.92 that Moses wrote. 00:31:34.12\00:31:35.46 So Abraham spoke with God as a friend. 00:31:35.59\00:31:39.96 He knew the principles of God's government. 00:31:40.36\00:31:43.16 He knew His law of love 00:31:43.40\00:31:45.37 and Abraham passed this down to his children. 00:31:45.57\00:31:48.67 It was clear, if you read the book of Genesis 00:31:49.27\00:31:52.84 that all of the laws of God - all of the Ten Commandments - 00:31:53.04\00:31:57.38 are being followed by Abraham's descendants. 00:31:57.58\00:32:01.45 And these commandments were then later repeated at Sinai. 00:32:01.95\00:32:07.72 But during the course of time Abraham's descendants 00:32:08.12\00:32:10.93 are taken away. They're in Egypt: 00:32:11.09\00:32:14.50 a pagan nation, a sun-worshiping nation. 00:32:14.73\00:32:18.00 They're there for 400 years. 00:32:18.20\00:32:20.50 Now remember: there's no written word. 00:32:20.70\00:32:23.14 They are just following what they've heard. 00:32:23.57\00:32:28.28 But it's becoming increasing... When you are enslaved 00:32:28.68\00:32:32.21 it is very difficult to worship in the way that God prescribed. 00:32:32.41\00:32:36.02 So 400 years... Over time, they lost much of the understanding 00:32:36.22\00:32:41.86 of God's covenant with Abraham. 00:32:42.06\00:32:44.19 BUT the Bible says in Exodus 2:24 00:32:44.83\00:32:49.56 that God remembered His covenant with Abraham 00:32:49.76\00:32:53.20 and Isaac. He heard their voice when they cried out. 00:32:53.40\00:32:56.74 He remembered the covenant and He graciously delivered them 00:32:57.14\00:33:00.71 from the bondage of slavery. 00:33:00.91\00:33:02.44 Turn to Psalms 105. 00:33:02.84\00:33:05.78 Psalms 105. 00:33:06.75\00:33:09.78 Here are the people in bondage in Egypt 00:33:12.35\00:33:15.79 just as God had foretold. 00:33:15.99\00:33:17.83 Four hundred years; four generations of people 00:33:18.23\00:33:21.80 are in bondage in Egypt. 00:33:22.00\00:33:23.93 God hears their voice as they cry out 00:33:24.33\00:33:27.10 and He saves them! 00:33:28.07\00:33:31.37 He delivers them from the bondage of slavery. 00:33:31.57\00:33:34.08 Look at Psalms 105 verse 43. 00:33:34.28\00:33:36.85 Psalms 105 verse 43. 00:33:38.55\00:33:41.12 "And He brought forth His people with joy. " 00:33:41.92\00:33:46.72 This is a God of covenant love who loved His people! 00:33:47.12\00:33:51.86 "He brought forth His people with joy and His chosen ones 00:33:52.06\00:33:55.20 with gladness and singing and gave them the lands 00:33:55.40\00:33:58.47 of the nations of Canaan and they repeated the fruits 00:33:58.67\00:34:00.74 of these peoples' labors... " 00:34:00.94\00:34:02.37 Why? Look at verse 45. 00:34:02.77\00:34:05.21 "that they might observe His statutes and keep His laws. " 00:34:05.41\00:34:08.91 Huh! God brings them out of bondage. Why? 00:34:10.38\00:34:14.65 They're under the everlasting covenant of Abraham 00:34:15.52\00:34:18.65 but so that they may observe His laws. 00:34:18.85\00:34:21.69 So He led them to Mt. Sinai; 00:34:21.99\00:34:23.96 He reminds them at Mt. Sinai of His law of love... 00:34:24.16\00:34:28.23 His Ten Commandments. 00:34:28.63\00:34:30.17 But let me ask you a question. 00:34:30.37\00:34:32.00 Did they have to obey His commandments before they were 00:34:33.40\00:34:36.10 saved? No! He saved them first! 00:34:36.30\00:34:40.54 He parted the Red Sea. They were saved by grace 00:34:40.74\00:34:43.11 through faith. They had faith that as they entered the Red Sea 00:34:43.31\00:34:47.08 God was going to keep those walls of water up there. 00:34:47.38\00:34:50.75 They didn't have to measure up to His moral standards first. 00:34:50.95\00:34:54.36 He knew they couldn't! 00:34:54.56\00:34:55.89 You and I cannot measure up to God's standards 00:34:56.22\00:35:00.23 until we are saved and converted and have the Holy Spirit 00:35:00.43\00:35:03.67 within us. They believed God would see them safely through. 00:35:03.87\00:35:08.90 Then He destroyed their enemy. 00:35:09.10\00:35:10.81 Turn to Exodus 19 and verse 4. 00:35:11.21\00:35:14.18 Exodus 19 and verse 4. 00:35:14.34\00:35:16.41 I love this passage 00:35:18.08\00:35:20.05 because we see the covenant-love language of God. 00:35:20.25\00:35:24.02 This is before God ever speaks the Ten Commandments. 00:35:24.22\00:35:27.36 This is before He's come down with all of His pyrotechnics 00:35:28.36\00:35:33.40 on the mountain. Exodus 19 and verse 4. 00:35:33.60\00:35:36.83 God's telling Abraham: "I want you to tell the people this. " 00:35:37.67\00:35:40.50 And what He says is: "You have seen what I did to 00:35:40.90\00:35:45.24 the Egyptians and how I bore you on eagle's wings 00:35:45.44\00:35:50.05 and I brought you to Myself. " 00:35:50.25\00:35:52.71 See the covenant-love language? 00:35:53.11\00:35:55.15 "I want to be your God and you be My people. " 00:35:55.92\00:35:59.69 "Now therefore... " He says in verse 5... 00:36:00.19\00:36:03.59 "if... " This is going to be a conditional... it is 00:36:03.89\00:36:07.86 a conditional covenant... "if you will indeed obey 00:36:08.03\00:36:10.47 My voice and keep my covenants then you shall be a special 00:36:10.67\00:36:13.13 treasure to Me above all the people. 00:36:13.34\00:36:16.00 For all the earth is Mine and you shall be to Me 00:36:16.20\00:36:18.61 a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 00:36:18.81\00:36:20.81 These are the words, Moses, that you are to speak 00:36:21.01\00:36:24.15 to the children of Israel. " 00:36:24.31\00:36:25.65 Does this not remind you of I Peter 2:9 00:36:25.68\00:36:28.15 that we are a "royal priesthood, a chosen nation. " 00:36:28.35\00:36:32.15 This is what He's saying to them: 00:36:32.35\00:36:33.99 "You'll be My royal priesthood 00:36:34.19\00:36:36.19 if you'll obey My voice. I love you! 00:36:36.83\00:36:39.29 All I ask is your response of love to Me. 00:36:39.49\00:36:42.70 If you love Me, keep My commandments. " 00:36:42.90\00:36:44.77 And so Moses goes and tells the people 00:36:44.97\00:36:47.00 and in the next verse... see, God is pledging His benevolence 00:36:47.20\00:36:51.84 and protection in exchange for their loyalty. 00:36:52.04\00:36:54.18 So verse 7 says: "So Moses came and called for 00:36:54.38\00:36:57.01 the elders of the people and lay before them all of these 00:36:57.21\00:36:59.65 words which the Lord had commanded him. " 00:36:59.85\00:37:01.98 What words? The words we just read 00:37:02.18\00:37:04.55 in verses 4 through 6. 00:37:04.75\00:37:07.72 These are the words: "I'll be your God; 00:37:08.12\00:37:11.66 you'll be My people if you'll just obey Me. " 00:37:12.06\00:37:14.40 And so... verse 8: "All the people answered together 00:37:15.36\00:37:19.77 and they said: 'All that the Lord has spoken 00:37:19.97\00:37:22.07 we will do. ' " "Yes, we'll be His people. " 00:37:22.27\00:37:25.34 "Yes, we will respond in covenant love by obeying Him. " 00:37:25.54\00:37:31.41 But see, the people... Moses then goes back to the Lord 00:37:31.81\00:37:35.68 and says: "Yes! They want to! " 00:37:35.88\00:37:37.49 The people have responded to this before God even spoke 00:37:37.65\00:37:41.09 the Ten Commandments. 00:37:41.29\00:37:42.62 He's invited them into covenant relationship. 00:37:42.66\00:37:46.26 And so the covenant was conditioned upon obedience 00:37:46.90\00:37:52.23 to His voice. 00:37:52.53\00:37:54.20 But their obedience was an expression... 00:37:55.10\00:37:57.91 supposed to be an expression... of covenant love. 00:37:58.31\00:38:01.18 It's a precondition to receiving the covenant blessing. 00:38:01.58\00:38:06.75 So if you think about it 00:38:07.15\00:38:09.62 God's kingdom operates 00:38:09.82\00:38:14.29 on two fundamental principles of love. 00:38:14.46\00:38:17.26 Can you tell me what those are? 00:38:17.46\00:38:18.86 Mark 12:30-31. 00:38:19.89\00:38:22.73 "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:38:23.13\00:38:26.84 with all of your soul, with all of your mind, 00:38:27.04\00:38:29.20 with all your strength. " And the second is: 00:38:29.40\00:38:32.57 "You shall love your neighbor as yourself. " 00:38:32.77\00:38:34.84 See, the first is unreserved love for God. 00:38:35.24\00:38:39.31 The second is self-sacrificing love for others. 00:38:39.71\00:38:43.59 But the law of love - the Ten Commandments - 00:38:44.09\00:38:47.76 the moral law is and always has been the standard 00:38:47.96\00:38:52.23 of God's government. 00:38:52.43\00:38:53.90 He expects His covenant people to keep His law. 00:38:54.10\00:38:57.33 Now, He first spoke these audibly 00:38:57.73\00:39:00.87 and the people trembled because the Bible says 00:39:01.54\00:39:06.07 when you hear the audible voice of the Lord that, in Revelation 00:39:06.27\00:39:09.34 it says His voice is like the rushing waters... 00:39:09.54\00:39:13.08 many rushing waters. 00:39:13.28\00:39:14.68 But now turn to Exodus 20. 00:39:15.08\00:39:18.52 Exodus 20. The people are trembling now 00:39:19.29\00:39:24.26 in the awe-inspiring presence of God. 00:39:24.63\00:39:26.93 But He is getting ready just to speak the Ten Commandments. 00:39:27.86\00:39:31.90 He's going to remind them of what He had told Abraham, 00:39:32.30\00:39:37.51 what He had told Isaac. 00:39:37.71\00:39:39.34 Remind them of the things that had been passed down to them 00:39:39.54\00:39:42.61 by word. And it starts... This is the preamble 00:39:43.01\00:39:47.42 of the Ten Commandments: 00:39:47.62\00:39:49.18 "And God spoke all these words saying: 00:39:49.38\00:39:51.79 'I am the Lord your God 00:39:52.19\00:39:54.66 who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 00:39:55.06\00:39:59.46 out of the house of bondage. ' " 00:39:59.66\00:40:02.03 Do you hear God's love in this preamble? 00:40:02.43\00:40:07.10 Before we go through the Ten Commandments let me just 00:40:08.30\00:40:10.57 say this: in Hebrew they are called ten words. 00:40:10.77\00:40:14.91 And the syntax - which is the arrangement of these words - 00:40:15.88\00:40:19.71 indicates that they are commandments. 00:40:19.91\00:40:23.25 But they are written in the future tense 00:40:23.65\00:40:26.35 which indicates that they are promises from God. 00:40:26.55\00:40:29.86 Let me repeat that. 00:40:30.63\00:40:32.03 The Ten Commandments are promises from God. 00:40:32.66\00:40:37.43 We have to quit thinking 00:40:38.23\00:40:41.20 that we can do anything without God's power. 00:40:41.60\00:40:45.91 Because what God is saying is 00:40:46.11\00:40:48.64 anything that He calls us to be He will cause us to be. 00:40:49.04\00:40:53.95 It is God working in us to will and to do 00:40:54.15\00:40:57.35 His good pleasure. So here He is. He started off 00:40:57.55\00:41:01.82 this preamble saying: "I am the Lord your God 00:41:02.02\00:41:04.06 who brought you out of bondage. I have borne you to Myself 00:41:04.46\00:41:08.10 on the wings of eagles. " And then He goes on to say 00:41:08.30\00:41:11.83 "You shall have no other gods before Me. " 00:41:12.03\00:41:14.60 "You won't bow down to idols any longer. " 00:41:15.20\00:41:19.04 "No... you won't take My name in vain. " 00:41:19.81\00:41:22.11 "You will REMEMBER My Sabbath Day. 00:41:22.31\00:41:24.88 You're going to be so excited to come spend this time with Me. 00:41:25.08\00:41:29.25 This time that I have sancti- fied, that I have put aside 00:41:29.45\00:41:33.36 as holy... this time for you and I. " 00:41:33.56\00:41:37.39 And then He says to them: 00:41:37.69\00:41:40.06 "You will honor your mother and your father. 00:41:40.26\00:41:42.16 You will not commit murder; you'll not commit adultery. 00:41:42.36\00:41:44.97 You'll not lie; you'll not steal. 00:41:45.37\00:41:47.80 You're not going to bear false testimony. 00:41:48.00\00:41:50.14 You're not going to covet. " Why? 00:41:50.44\00:41:52.41 "Because that's what being in covenant relationship with Me 00:41:52.81\00:41:56.91 is like. I'm going to empower you 00:41:57.11\00:42:00.75 to overcome these things. " 00:42:00.95\00:42:03.39 Then God engraves, we know, 00:42:03.59\00:42:07.06 the only part of scripture that was written with the finger 00:42:07.26\00:42:11.59 of God are the Ten Commandments. 00:42:11.79\00:42:14.20 And He tells Moses: "Put these in the ark. " 00:42:14.56\00:42:18.30 What was the ark? 00:42:19.47\00:42:21.27 That's God's throne. 00:42:21.47\00:42:23.00 They were put in the ark, and the mercy seat was above them. 00:42:23.67\00:42:27.64 Mercy always triumphs judgment. 00:42:28.04\00:42:31.21 But the law is God's... 00:42:31.41\00:42:34.08 the foundation of God's government. 00:42:34.28\00:42:38.92 Now... even after the first set was broken 00:42:39.32\00:42:42.86 God re-wrote them and had them placed there. 00:42:43.06\00:42:47.23 Let me run through the timeline 00:42:47.46\00:42:49.56 of... before we get into the old covenant. 00:42:49.76\00:42:52.33 I've got to hurry. How does time go away so quickly? 00:42:52.53\00:42:55.24 Let's look at the timeline of what happened at Mt. Sinai 00:42:56.74\00:43:00.51 because I think we've got it all wrong. 00:43:00.71\00:43:02.68 So first the people - before God even speaks the commandments - 00:43:02.88\00:43:06.41 they enter into covenant relationship saying: "Yes, 00:43:06.61\00:43:09.05 we will... You can be our God; we'll be Your people. 00:43:09.45\00:43:12.52 We'll obey You. " 00:43:12.82\00:43:14.16 So then God goes and He speaks from the mountain. 00:43:14.19\00:43:17.03 He speaks the Ten Commandments. 00:43:17.43\00:43:19.29 And then the people, because they are fearful, 00:43:19.69\00:43:22.33 say: "Ooh! Moses... YOU be our mediator. " 00:43:22.63\00:43:25.23 So Moses goes up the mountain 00:43:25.53\00:43:27.70 and he receives the words of a special covenant with Israel. 00:43:27.90\00:43:33.07 The ceremonial laws, the civil laws. 00:43:33.27\00:43:39.25 Also the Ten Commandments. He comes down. 00:43:39.75\00:43:42.42 Turn to Exodus 24. 00:43:42.62\00:43:44.55 Exodus 24 and verse 3. 00:43:44.75\00:43:47.02 Moses comes down... Now, mind you, the Ten Commandments have 00:43:47.89\00:43:51.63 not yet been written on stone. 00:43:51.83\00:43:53.56 They've only been spoken. 00:43:53.76\00:43:55.23 Now Moses comes down. And he is writing everything 00:43:56.30\00:44:00.57 that the Lord tells him. So here's what happens. 00:44:00.77\00:44:03.04 Exodus 24 verse 3: "Moses came and he told the people 00:44:03.91\00:44:08.48 all the words of the Lord and all of the judgments. " 00:44:08.68\00:44:11.85 He's reciting the covenant blessings, 00:44:12.25\00:44:14.02 the covenant judgments. 00:44:14.22\00:44:15.55 "And all the people answered with one voice and said: 00:44:15.58\00:44:17.79 'All the words which the Lord has said we will do. ' " 00:44:17.99\00:44:20.99 They're repeating what they said before. 00:44:21.19\00:44:23.06 "And Moses wrote all of the words of the Lord. " 00:44:23.26\00:44:26.56 Everything that God had dictated to him. 00:44:26.80\00:44:29.26 "He rose early in the morning. He built an altar at the foot 00:44:29.46\00:44:31.83 of the mountain and the twelve pillars according to the twelve 00:44:32.03\00:44:34.27 tribes of Israel. Then he sent young men 00:44:34.47\00:44:36.20 of the children of Israel who offered burnt offerings 00:44:36.40\00:44:38.81 and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord. 00:44:39.01\00:44:42.38 And Moses took half the blood and put it in its basin; 00:44:42.78\00:44:46.78 half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. " 00:44:46.98\00:44:49.15 What is he doing? He's ratifying the old covenant 00:44:49.35\00:44:53.09 with blood. 00:44:53.32\00:44:54.72 "Then he took the book of the covenant... " 00:44:55.52\00:44:59.46 These are the words that Moses had just written, 00:45:02.03\00:45:04.73 also sometimes called the book of the law. 00:45:04.93\00:45:06.84 "He read it in the hearing of the people and they said: 00:45:07.04\00:45:10.24 "All that the Lord has said we will do. We'll be obedient. " 00:45:10.44\00:45:13.21 So he takes the blood; he sprinkles it on the people. 00:45:13.41\00:45:16.44 In Hebrews chapter 9 it says he also sprinkled it 00:45:16.75\00:45:20.92 on the book. It says: "This is the blood 00:45:21.12\00:45:25.52 of the covenant which the Lord has made with you 00:45:25.72\00:45:28.92 according to all these words. " 00:45:29.12\00:45:31.16 Now, after they've made this old covenant 00:45:31.76\00:45:35.03 Moses goes up the mountain. God tells him in those 40 days 00:45:35.23\00:45:39.20 "Build Me a tabernacle so I can dwell among the people 00:45:39.40\00:45:42.14 and we'll put all of these sacrificial things into place. " 00:45:42.34\00:45:46.68 He comes down the mountain; he sees the people in rebellion. 00:45:47.74\00:45:51.08 He breaks the first set... he goes back up the mountain. 00:45:51.28\00:45:53.72 God's writing this in stone again. 00:45:53.92\00:45:56.08 He brings them down and puts them inside the ark. 00:45:56.48\00:45:59.62 The Ten Commandments were not written on stone 00:46:00.09\00:46:02.22 until after the old covenant was written. 00:46:02.42\00:46:06.16 Do you see that? Why is this important? 00:46:06.36\00:46:09.43 The Ten Commandments, yes, are written in the old covenant. 00:46:10.47\00:46:14.77 They are the heart of the old covenant. 00:46:14.97\00:46:17.14 There's the civil laws, the ceremonial laws, 00:46:17.54\00:46:21.21 and the Ten Commandments that were written in the book 00:46:21.41\00:46:23.38 of the covenant. 00:46:23.58\00:46:24.95 But then afterwards God writes them on stone 00:46:25.25\00:46:28.15 and has them put inside the ark. Whereas 00:46:28.35\00:46:31.59 He has this book of the covenant put on the outside of the ark. 00:46:31.79\00:46:36.76 Stone was permanent! 00:46:37.26\00:46:39.63 Inside the ark it shows it's the foundation of His government. 00:46:40.03\00:46:42.83 On the side pocket it was temporary! 00:46:43.13\00:46:45.80 It was written on animal skins... not by God's hand 00:46:46.20\00:46:49.00 but by Moses' hand. 00:46:49.20\00:46:50.91 So this was... Deuteronomy 31 says that 00:46:51.11\00:46:56.71 it was there "as a witness against them" 00:46:56.91\00:47:00.25 to condemn their actions. 00:47:00.45\00:47:02.68 You know, throughout Deuteronomy 00:47:02.88\00:47:07.32 Moses presents the law of God as glorious. 00:47:07.52\00:47:10.86 "Oh this is a wonderful thing! " He's always saying this. 00:47:11.03\00:47:13.83 And he says: "If your heart's right, you can do it! " 00:47:14.20\00:47:17.27 But God knows our hearts. 00:47:17.63\00:47:19.90 He knows how weak we are. 00:47:20.14\00:47:22.00 He knew the depravity of mankind 00:47:22.20\00:47:24.61 and by grace He provided the sacrificial system. 00:47:24.81\00:47:27.88 And it was all to point... these ceremonial laws 00:47:28.88\00:47:33.52 were food and drink offerings... they were all to point 00:47:33.72\00:47:36.45 to the ministry of Christ. 00:47:36.69\00:47:38.22 And they had the celebrations and the festivals 00:47:38.62\00:47:40.86 and the special annual Sabbaths. 00:47:41.06\00:47:43.86 Not talking about the weekly Sabbath 00:47:44.06\00:47:45.86 but these ceremonial Sabbaths. 00:47:46.26\00:47:48.00 Everything was a shadow of Jesus Christ's ministry. 00:47:48.20\00:47:52.33 Turn to Colossians 22 and verse 14. 00:47:52.53\00:47:54.84 Colossians 2 and verse 14. 00:47:55.24\00:47:57.17 Everything from the old covenant - 00:48:00.24\00:48:03.41 which was a temporary, special contract 00:48:03.61\00:48:06.85 written with the people of Israel - 00:48:07.05\00:48:09.98 pointed to the ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:48:10.22\00:48:13.32 Now Colossians 2 and verse 14 00:48:13.72\00:48:16.32 says this. Paul writes: "Having wiped out the 00:48:19.26\00:48:24.47 handwriting of requirements that was against us 00:48:24.67\00:48:28.54 which was contrary to us... " That means taking it out 00:48:29.77\00:48:32.91 of the way... "having nailed it to the cross... " 00:48:33.11\00:48:35.14 What did He nail to the cross? 00:48:35.34\00:48:36.68 Well let's look in context. 00:48:36.85\00:48:38.25 "Having disarmed principalities and powers 00:48:38.45\00:48:40.52 He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them 00:48:40.72\00:48:43.72 in it, so... " As a result, based upon 00:48:43.92\00:48:47.46 what he just said. Because this thing has been nailed 00:48:47.66\00:48:53.03 to the cross... this thing that stood against us... 00:48:53.23\00:48:57.17 "let no one judge you in food or in drink... " 00:48:57.37\00:49:00.20 He's speaking of offerings... 00:49:00.40\00:49:02.07 "or regarding a festival or a new moon or 00:49:02.27\00:49:06.81 the annual Sabbath... the ceremonial days. " 00:49:07.01\00:49:09.68 He's talking about the old cove- nant, the book of the covenant 00:49:09.88\00:49:13.85 that got nailed to the cross. 00:49:14.05\00:49:17.22 And he goes on to say: 00:49:17.42\00:49:18.75 "Don't let them judge you in food and drink offerings. 00:49:18.89\00:49:22.22 Don't let them judge you in annual Sabbath, these ceremonial 00:49:22.42\00:49:27.66 days. " And then he finishes in verse 17, says: 00:49:27.86\00:49:30.97 "These are a shadow of things to come, but the substance 00:49:31.13\00:49:34.80 is of Christ. " So what got nailed to the cross? 00:49:35.00\00:49:38.94 It was the old covenant... the book of the testament. 00:49:39.51\00:49:42.88 the book of the covenant that Moses wrote. 00:49:43.08\00:49:45.18 It was not the Ten Commandments. 00:49:45.38\00:49:47.25 Turn to Hebrews chapter 9 and verse 9. 00:49:47.65\00:49:51.82 Hebrews chapter 9 and verse 9. 00:49:52.49\00:49:55.09 Christ's death proved that the law was absolute, 00:49:56.62\00:50:00.60 it was unchangeable. 00:50:00.80\00:50:02.46 And if God planned to do away with His law 00:50:02.86\00:50:06.27 then Christ died in vain 00:50:06.57\00:50:08.70 because He died to pay the penalty that we had incurred 00:50:09.10\00:50:15.04 from breaking the law. But look at verse... 00:50:15.24\00:50:18.85 Hebrews chapter 9 and verse 9. 00:50:19.05\00:50:21.52 In reference here, he is speak- ing of the first tabernacle. 00:50:22.68\00:50:25.85 He says: "It... " the first tabernacle... 00:50:26.25\00:50:28.66 "was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and 00:50:29.16\00:50:33.46 sacrifices are offered, which cannot make him who performed 00:50:33.66\00:50:37.13 the service perfect in regard to the conscience, 00:50:37.33\00:50:39.57 concerned only with food and drink, various washings 00:50:39.87\00:50:43.20 and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time 00:50:43.44\00:50:47.81 of reformation. " He's talking about the Levitical offerings. 00:50:48.01\00:50:51.11 Christ fulfilled all of this prophetic symbolism. 00:50:51.51\00:50:55.38 All of the sacrificial system and the ceremonial system. 00:50:55.58\00:50:58.95 His death - Daniel 9:27- 00:50:59.15\00:51:02.56 prophesied that His death "would bring an end 00:51:02.76\00:51:06.80 to the sacrifice and offerings. " 00:51:07.00\00:51:08.96 So we read in Galatians 3 that Moses... I mean 00:51:09.36\00:51:13.74 Paul said the Mosaic covenant was added 00:51:14.14\00:51:18.91 to Abraham's covenant 00:51:19.11\00:51:20.84 UNTIL the Seed to whom the promise was made would come. 00:51:21.18\00:51:26.41 So once Christ came 00:51:27.02\00:51:28.35 that old covenant got nailed to the cross. 00:51:28.52\00:51:30.79 The sad history of Israel's continued disobedience 00:51:33.05\00:51:36.99 and covenant breaking, though. 00:51:37.19\00:51:38.69 How they twisted and distorted obedience to the law 00:51:39.89\00:51:45.23 as a means of salvation. 00:51:45.43\00:51:47.20 They would rigorously observe the ceremonial laws 00:51:47.60\00:51:51.07 but they'd violate the purpose of the law. 00:51:51.47\00:51:54.51 And Jesus and Paul were both very critical of the misuse 00:51:54.71\00:51:57.95 of the law. But in the Old Testament 00:51:58.15\00:52:00.85 God wrote in Jeremiah 31:33-34 00:52:01.15\00:52:05.79 that He was going to write His law on our hearts 00:52:05.99\00:52:10.06 someday. He promised in the new covenant 00:52:10.26\00:52:13.80 He'd write His laws on our hearts. 00:52:14.00\00:52:16.63 And that promise was echoed in Ezekiel 36:26-27. 00:52:16.83\00:52:21.64 He said: "I'll give you a new heart; I'll put a new spirit 00:52:21.84\00:52:24.41 within you. " That's regeneration; that's new birth! 00:52:24.61\00:52:27.91 He says: "I will cause you to walk 00:52:28.21\00:52:30.65 in My statutes. " 00:52:31.05\00:52:33.31 You see, in Isaiah chapter 42 00:52:33.72\00:52:37.45 God promised that He would give Jesus, 00:52:37.62\00:52:40.62 His Son, as a covenant to the Gentiles. 00:52:41.02\00:52:45.99 Jesus is a light to us. 00:52:46.19\00:52:50.60 Jesus IS the new covenant. 00:52:50.97\00:52:53.17 And even Jesus said, when He was having the Last Supper 00:52:53.57\00:52:58.41 instituting communion, He said: 00:52:58.61\00:53:01.18 "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. " 00:53:01.38\00:53:06.05 "I am going to ratify this covenant with My own blood. " 00:53:06.25\00:53:12.22 So when He died on the cross as our substitute 00:53:13.86\00:53:16.83 He brought the new covenant in and made the old obsolete. 00:53:17.83\00:53:21.80 In the new covenant it is obvious that the church 00:53:22.83\00:53:26.13 is the new Israel. There's so many scriptures. 00:53:26.33\00:53:28.44 If you don't understand that, e-mail me 00:53:28.64\00:53:31.01 and we'll send you those scriptures. 00:53:31.21\00:53:32.61 But Christ fulfills all of God's covenants. 00:53:32.81\00:53:35.14 He's the Seed of the woman's seed of Abraham. 00:53:35.34\00:53:37.31 He's the end goal of the Mosaic covenant. 00:53:37.51\00:53:39.58 He sits on David's throne forever... 00:53:40.38\00:53:43.95 the Davidic covenant. 00:53:44.15\00:53:45.69 So turn to Hebrews chapter 8. 00:53:45.89\00:53:47.99 We have to get to this before we finish. 00:53:48.39\00:53:50.79 Hebrews chapter 8 and verse 8. 00:53:51.16\00:53:53.66 The question is: the Ten Commandments were the heart 00:53:56.90\00:53:59.90 of the old covenant. Are they also the heart 00:54:00.17\00:54:03.07 of the new covenant? Yes! 00:54:03.27\00:54:05.84 Hebrews 8 and verse 8. 00:54:06.04\00:54:08.41 Christ came not only to redeem us 00:54:10.08\00:54:12.65 but that He might exalt and magnify the law 00:54:13.05\00:54:16.08 and make it honorable. 00:54:16.28\00:54:17.92 So verse 8 says this: "Because finding fault with 00:54:18.32\00:54:21.29 them he said: 'Behold, the days are coming 00:54:21.49\00:54:23.83 says the Lord when I will make a new covenant 00:54:24.03\00:54:26.06 with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 00:54:26.26\00:54:28.36 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers 00:54:28.76\00:54:31.37 in the day when I took them by the hand 00:54:31.57\00:54:33.80 to lead them out of the land of Egypt 00:54:34.00\00:54:35.40 because they did not continue in My covenant 00:54:35.60\00:54:37.71 and I disregarded them. ' " 00:54:37.91\00:54:39.77 See, God keeps covenant 00:54:40.18\00:54:41.51 with those who keep covenant with Him. 00:54:41.54\00:54:43.35 "For this..." he says in verse 10... 00:54:45.15\00:54:47.85 "this is the covenant... " Here's my new covenant... 00:54:48.08\00:54:50.89 "that I'll make with the house of Israel 00:54:51.09\00:54:53.09 after those days says the Lord: 00:54:53.32\00:54:54.96 "I will put My laws in their mind and write them on 00:54:55.16\00:54:58.03 their hearts. I'll be their God; they shall 00:54:58.23\00:55:00.46 be My people. " Christ magnified the law. 00:55:00.66\00:55:05.93 He said: "You've heard it said 'You shall not 00:55:06.90\00:55:09.07 commit adultery? ' I'm saying if you lust 00:55:09.27\00:55:12.31 you're already guilty of adultery. " 00:55:12.51\00:55:14.08 "You've heard it said 'You shall not murder. ' 00:55:14.28\00:55:15.78 If you've got hatred in your heart toward somebody, 00:55:15.98\00:55:18.18 you're already guilty of that. " 00:55:18.38\00:55:20.02 He came to magnify the law and He fulfilled the law. 00:55:20.22\00:55:24.42 So His righteousness is given to us. 00:55:24.62\00:55:28.66 It is imputed and imparted to us. 00:55:29.06\00:55:33.90 This is why we can be jus- tified by grace through faith. 00:55:34.10\00:55:38.00 See, Jesus Christ always has been the everlasting... 00:55:38.70\00:55:43.27 the news of salvation by grace is the everlasting gospel. 00:55:43.47\00:55:48.58 But our response of covenant love 00:55:48.98\00:55:51.65 must be this: Jesus said 00:55:51.95\00:55:56.58 "If you love Me, keep My commandments 00:55:56.79\00:56:00.09 AND I will give you another Helper. " 00:56:00.29\00:56:03.56 Allos Parakletos. 00:56:03.96\00:56:05.69 One who is just like Me. 00:56:05.89\00:56:07.40 "I'll give you the Holy Spirit. " 00:56:07.76\00:56:10.10 That's what Acts 5:32 is saying: 00:56:10.50\00:56:12.80 that the Spirit is given to those who obey. 00:56:13.00\00:56:16.00 But the Ten Commandments - just as they were the heart 00:56:16.20\00:56:20.38 of the old covenant they are the heart 00:56:20.58\00:56:23.95 of the new covenant. They are permanent. 00:56:24.15\00:56:27.22 They are God's standard for His government. 00:56:27.62\00:56:31.02 The good news is this: turn to I Thessalonians chapter 5. 00:56:32.02\00:56:36.73 See, we don't... Jesus didn't obey to be saved. 00:56:37.43\00:56:42.13 I mean, to become the Son of God. 00:56:43.33\00:56:45.37 Jesus obeyed because He WAS the Son of God. 00:56:45.57\00:56:48.00 We don't obey to be saved; 00:56:48.40\00:56:50.94 we obey because we ARE saved! 00:56:51.14\00:56:53.98 And it is God who is working in us to will and to do 00:56:54.18\00:56:56.91 His good pleasure. I Thessalonians 5:23. 00:56:57.11\00:57:00.05 "Now may the God of peace, Jehovah Shalom Himself, 00:57:00.35\00:57:03.65 sanctify you completely making you holy, 00:57:03.85\00:57:06.69 separating you from sin. 00:57:06.89\00:57:08.49 May your whole spirit, soul, and body 00:57:08.69\00:57:12.16 be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord 00:57:12.36\00:57:14.63 Jesus Christ. " Now look at verse 24. 00:57:14.83\00:57:18.53 "He who calls you is faithful 00:57:18.73\00:57:23.27 who will also do it. " 00:57:23.51\00:57:25.44 Salvation is by grace through faith 00:57:25.64\00:57:27.84 and our response is love; 00:57:28.04\00:57:31.38 covenant love is obedience. 00:57:31.58\00:57:34.42
