know the name of Charles Finney.

He lived a few years ago

but he was an
iconic American evangelist

and he is known for

starting or being the
father of revivalism in America.
00:01:51.99\00:01:56.96
He grew up in New York
and first he was a teacher,
00:01:56.99\00:02:00.45
then he became a law clerk
00:02:00.48\00:02:02.64
and after being a law clerk
00:02:02.67\00:02:04.29
and being touched
by the Holy Spirit,
00:02:04.32\00:02:06.80
he then became a revivalist.
00:02:06.83\00:02:09.99
These are some of the
outcomes of his revival meetings

that happened
through out the US.

It is estimated that from
1857 to 1858, 100,000 people,

that's right, 100,000 people

were led to a
experience with Jesus Christ

through his revival meetings
either directly or indirectly.

Through the lifetime of
Mark Finney being a revivalist,

It's believed
that 500,000 professed

conversions took
place though Jesus Christ,

and the amazing thing
about that is 80% of the people
00:02:45.61\00:02:49.14
that were
converted at his meetings,
00:02:49.17\00:02:51.73
stayed faithful
to God afterwards,
00:02:51.76\00:02:54.55
isn't that amazing?

That through
the life of one man,

so many people's lives
were touched for Jesus Christ.

We might say, well, maybe
Charles Finney was a super,

a super spiritual person
from the day he was born.

Is that the case?

Well, this is what we find
his spiritual experience was

when he was just a young man.

At the age of 26
he went to church
00:03:21.44\00:03:25.89
not because he wanted to
00:03:25.92\00:03:27.60
but that's just what
people did in the 1880s.

In fact, when he went to church,
00:03:32.30\00:03:34.02
he would hear
words like regeneration,

faith, sanctification
00:03:37.60\00:03:39.84
and he admits
that at a young age

he never knew what
those words meant at all.

What about his prayer life?

What was his prayer
life like as young person?

Well, this is what he says.

He says that he never really
believed in prayer very much

because he saw little
answers to pray in his life.

This who, is who
Charles Finney was.

And I don't know if
you've ever felt that way,

being a young person,

but this young man was
touched by the Holy Spirit.

You see, even though he
did not have the experience

we thought he should
have as an evangelist,

God continued and
worked with this young man.

This man should have
never been a revivalist,

just from a human perspective.

There was nothing in
him that we would say

this person would
become ever a great preacher,

but he was touched
by the Holy Spirit.

He talks about his
conversion experience

and he says there's
one thing that he did know,

that he was a sinner.

And one evening on Sunday night,

he wanted to
work his own salvation

and he wanted to find
Christ in a personal way,

so this is what he did.

He grabbed his Bible and on
Sunday night he began to read

and he kept reading
and reading the Bible,

and before he knew it

two days had gone
past and it was Tuesday.

And guess what,
through that experience,

he never felt any different.

He read his Bibles for two days
and he never felt any different

and he thought that
would be the end of him.

He thought that he
was gonna die right then

and if he did die, he
would not make it into heaven

and he was so discouraged.

What do you do when you've
read the Bible for two days

and you don't feel any different

to when you first started?

He woke up that
morning discouraged,

ready to go to
work as a law clerk,

and as he made his way
to work, he heard a voice,

an inward voice he said,
and this is what it said to him.

and his mind began to receive
the light of truth in his heart

was repeated to him.

And Finney said, yes.

trying to work out

or trying to earn his salvation,

but Hebrews Chapter 12 tells us,

that Jesus is

Finisher of our faith.

Jesus authors our faith.

Finney was
trying to do something

that Jesus could only do,

and the Holy
Spirit was reminding him

that salvation is
something to be received.

So Finney, after describing
that experience, says this,

"I instantly
seized hold of this,

and I had intellectually
believed the Bible before,

but never had the
truth been in my mind

that faith was a voluntary trust

rather than an
intellectual state."

Did you catch that?

Finney said that he had
believed it in his mind,

received it in his heart.

From that point on he said,

through that experience."

Just as we
heard a few nights ago

that we cannot separate
truth and doctrine from Jesus.

impossible, we cannot do that,

that claim to be Christian,

and those are wonderful things,

but unless Jesus is
being experienced in our life,

We cannot be moved by the spirit

just a simple fisherman

and yet he would become
the most powerful witness

and preacher for Jesus Christ.

how history would take place

as he explains it.
