" 00:04:27.83\00:04:30.27 It's not... it's like... 00:04:30.30\00:04:31.63 we've never done anything quite that ambitious before, 00:04:31.67\00:04:34.34 typically Adventist Review, which has functioned 00:04:34.40\00:04:36.84 as the daily bulletin of the General Conference Session 00:04:36.87\00:04:40.31 since the very first one, in 1863... this year we... 00:04:40.34\00:04:43.71 added 50 percent more in page count 00:04:43.75\00:04:46.82 and that meant 50 percent more time and design 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.62 and everything else and created a daily bulletin 00:04:49.65\00:04:52.35 that really tried to capture the whole experience in San Antonio. 00:04:52.39\00:04:57.29 My staff is enormously glad 00:04:57.33\00:04:59.43 the General Conference Session is over... 00:04:59.46\00:05:01.06 and doesn't come back for five years. 00:05:01.10\00:05:02.60 I'm sure that's true, 00:05:02.63\00:05:04.10 well, you know, so much has changed 00:05:04.13\00:05:06.27 about the look and feel of the Adventist Review 00:05:06.30\00:05:08.80 and so, I'm just wondering how is that working out 00:05:08.84\00:05:11.27 and what motivated these changes? 00:05:11.31\00:05:14.34 You know, every successful marketer 00:05:14.38\00:05:17.38 talks with an audience and discovers what it is they want 00:05:17.41\00:05:21.15 we began doing research a number of years ago 00:05:21.18\00:05:23.95 talking with our faithful Adventist Review subscribers... 00:05:23.99\00:05:26.82 many of you in this room 00:05:26.86\00:05:28.19 sending in Survey responses, letters asking for your opinions 00:05:28.22\00:05:32.06 and the answers that came back routinely were, 00:05:32.09\00:05:34.23 "We would like the Adventist Review 00:05:34.26\00:05:37.47 a little less frequently 00:05:37.53\00:05:38.87 and a little more substantial when it comes" 00:05:38.90\00:05:41.07 and, in fact, many people were saying, 00:05:41.10\00:05:43.37 "Bill, we feel terribly guilty because we don't actually get 00:05:43.41\00:05:47.04 to reading all of the articles" and we said, 00:05:47.08\00:05:48.84 "Well, who reads magazines that way anymore, today? 00:05:48.88\00:05:51.38 So we're going to provide you with a more substantial magazine 00:05:51.41\00:05:55.25 once a month and show you how to use it every week 00:05:55.28\00:05:57.89 if it's your habit to read the Adventist Review, 00:05:57.95\00:06:00.56 every Friday evening" 00:06:00.59\00:06:01.92 and a big percentage of our readers do that. 00:06:01.96\00:06:04.19 So, after months of thinking about this 00:06:04.23\00:06:06.73 and our Board endorsement, 00:06:06.76\00:06:08.10 we launched this new edition on April the 1st. 00:06:08.13\00:06:10.37 We particularly wanted to focus on an audience of faithful, 00:06:10.40\00:06:16.60 committed young families in Adventism 00:06:16.64\00:06:19.51 as well as their parents and grandparents 00:06:19.54\00:06:22.34 trying to raise up another generation of faith 00:06:22.38\00:06:24.95 so that the Lord's work will continue. 00:06:25.01\00:06:27.08 We've had an enormously good response to that 00:06:27.12\00:06:29.45 on every scale we can measure by... God has been blessing. 00:06:29.48\00:06:32.99 We hear from so many of our readers who say, 00:06:33.05\00:06:36.16 "I may be 90 years old but I like the new look" 00:06:36.19\00:06:39.26 those are the gratifying letters to get. 00:06:39.29\00:06:41.66 Okay, well, I just want to bring to your attention 00:06:41.70\00:06:44.90 that you have a copy on your seat, 00:06:44.93\00:06:47.40 every single seat got a copy of the Adventist Review 00:06:47.44\00:06:50.41 and I want to point out that this is an ASI Special Edition. 00:06:50.44\00:06:54.34 And in fact, we have been creating an ASI Special Edition 00:06:54.38\00:06:58.58 for almost ten years now putting in unique ASI content 00:06:58.61\00:07:02.75 telling the stories of ASI each year 00:07:02.78\00:07:05.55 part of what we're interested in doing 00:07:05.59\00:07:08.29 is using this vehicle which the Lord has given this church 00:07:08.32\00:07:11.76 to shine a spotlight on the ministries, 00:07:11.79\00:07:14.66 on the services, the organizations 00:07:14.70\00:07:17.10 that God is using to finish His work. 00:07:17.17\00:07:19.53 That isn't only happening 00:07:19.57\00:07:21.34 out of the General Conference building. 00:07:21.40\00:07:23.10 Well, we are delighted 00:07:23.14\00:07:24.84 for this collaboration that we can have 00:07:24.87\00:07:26.71 together with the Adventist Review 00:07:26.74\00:07:28.24 and the ASI family, 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.61 it's something that's very much appreciated, 00:07:29.64\00:07:31.75 and I'd like to find out what's different between... 00:07:31.81\00:07:35.92 like... what we had last year at ASI... 00:07:35.95\00:07:39.45 what's different and what's the same as well. 00:07:39.49\00:07:41.06 Well, first of all, 00:07:41.09\00:07:42.46 the message of the Adventist Review is unchanged 00:07:42.49\00:07:45.06 and I pray that it will always stay unchanged. 00:07:45.09\00:07:47.50 This magazine... James White described 00:07:47.53\00:07:49.60 as gathering the scattered flock, 00:07:49.66\00:07:51.63 it's here to nurture and support faithful Adventism 00:07:51.67\00:07:55.44 that's always going to be the same 00:07:55.47\00:07:57.24 but the look of this is quite different, 00:07:57.27\00:07:58.87 you notice the polybag that it's in, 00:07:58.91\00:08:00.44 the KidsView magazine which many adults tell us 00:08:00.48\00:08:03.41 is one of their favorite pieces of what we produce, 00:08:03.45\00:08:06.31 KidsView is now wrapped in this polybag 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.15 but you'll also notice that other material can travel 00:08:09.18\00:08:12.75 in this mailing opportunity 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.86 to all of the subscribers of Adventist Review 00:08:14.89\00:08:17.93 and so partner ministries, 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.33 ASI partner ministries can work with us... 00:08:19.39\00:08:22.30 we can help carry the postage so that your message gets out 00:08:22.36\00:08:26.03 to our Adventist Review Subscribers. 00:08:26.07\00:08:27.77 We are looking forward to the opportunities 00:08:27.80\00:08:29.84 that this new vehicle creates for us 00:08:29.87\00:08:32.17 in giving all of the ministries of ASI 00:08:32.21\00:08:33.88 an opportunity to get their message 00:08:33.91\00:08:36.08 in front of core Adventist readers. 00:08:36.11\00:08:38.21 What a wonderful opportunity, that's just really a good idea 00:08:38.25\00:08:41.75 to be able to include others as well in getting messages out. 00:08:41.78\00:08:45.25 Well, in fact you'll find in this polybag, this evening, 00:08:45.29\00:08:48.02 an ASI ministry, 00:08:48.06\00:08:49.82 one of the newest members of ASI has material in this polybag... 00:08:49.86\00:08:53.96 you'll get an example there of what we could do to be helpful 00:08:54.00\00:08:57.87 to other ministries as they want to grow their footprint 00:08:57.90\00:09:00.87 in their opportunity to serve. 00:09:00.90\00:09:02.24 Wow! what a wonderful opportunity... 00:09:02.27\00:09:04.01 in fact, I kind of hear those polybags 00:09:04.04\00:09:05.67 kind of make us some noise out there 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.08 so I know that people are looking at the magazines. 00:09:07.11\00:09:08.84 Well, you know, you have been coming to ASI 00:09:08.91\00:09:11.58 now for 15 years and actually eight of those years 00:09:11.61\00:09:14.58 you've been the senior editor of Adventist Review, 00:09:14.62\00:09:17.52 so, my last question to you is why do you keep coming back 00:09:17.55\00:09:20.89 we're delighted to have you but tell us why you come. 00:09:20.92\00:09:24.23 My family and my staff know that this is one of the 00:09:24.26\00:09:27.26 absolute "Musts" in my annual calendar, 00:09:27.30\00:09:30.07 I build everything around what happens 00:09:30.10\00:09:32.83 in early August each year, 00:09:32.87\00:09:34.87 not only because it represents an opportunity 00:09:34.90\00:09:37.51 to talk with people who are doing frontline ministry 00:09:37.54\00:09:40.38 because it's a tremendous inspiration to me 00:09:40.41\00:09:43.18 to see what God is doing through this Organization. 00:09:43.24\00:09:46.31 The first ASI Convention I attended, 15 years ago, 00:09:46.35\00:09:49.38 I returned and I wrote an editorial 00:09:49.42\00:09:51.55 for the Adventist Review, 00:09:51.59\00:09:52.92 the title of which was addressed to me. 00:09:52.95\00:09:55.99 It read, "Your church is too small" 00:09:56.02\00:09:58.56 and what I meant by that was... 00:09:58.59\00:10:01.10 I had too small a vision 00:10:01.13\00:10:03.10 of what God was doing in this Movement 00:10:03.13\00:10:05.13 and coming to ASI each year reminds me again 00:10:05.17\00:10:08.50 that God doesn't only work out of bricks and mortar buildings, 00:10:08.54\00:10:12.14 God doesn't only work through named Organizations, 00:10:12.17\00:10:15.28 God's constantly at work through His Spirit 00:10:15.31\00:10:17.61 raising up faithful people, 00:10:17.65\00:10:19.18 I get a chance to meet you at ASI to hear your stories 00:10:19.21\00:10:22.68 to tell those stories in the Adventist Review 00:10:22.72\00:10:24.89 and in Adventist World, 00:10:24.92\00:10:26.25 those are the things that make me excited to be here 00:10:26.29\00:10:28.86 and to meet you each year. 00:10:28.92\00:10:30.26 Thank you so much... 00:10:30.29\00:10:31.63 it's a privilege to work together. 00:10:31.66\00:10:32.99 It's good to be with you. 00:10:33.03\00:10:34.66 We got to move along very quickly here 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.30 and I have with me, Barbara Taylor, 00:10:36.36\00:10:39.00 who has been with ASI for many, many years 00:10:39.03\00:10:42.67 and from the Denver area, 00:10:42.70\00:10:44.21 she's going to tell us about New Beginnings DVD Series. 00:10:44.27\00:10:48.58 The New Beginnings DVD Series 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.41 has been one of the most exciting, successful, 00:10:51.45\00:10:55.12 wonderful, soul-winning programs 00:10:55.15\00:10:59.05 that ASI has ever established in my opinion 00:10:59.09\00:11:02.42 and I can tell you right now that when you ever become 00:11:02.46\00:11:05.93 involved with ASI New Beginnings DVD Training, 00:11:05.96\00:11:08.66 you will become on fire for the Lord. 00:11:08.73\00:11:11.20 Yeah, is this cost effective, tell me... 00:11:11.23\00:11:13.70 it's very, very cost effective, 00:11:13.74\00:11:16.44 the other day, when we were in our Board Meeting 00:11:16.47\00:11:19.01 we found that they're actually per soul... 00:11:19.04\00:11:21.34 it's one dollar per soul 00:11:21.38\00:11:23.41 when we use the New Beginnings DVD training program. 00:11:23.45\00:11:26.82 They'll be people who stay in the church 00:11:26.85\00:11:28.82 or what's the average people who leave or stay in the church? 00:11:28.85\00:11:31.82 You could send out a hundred evangelists 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.09 and they could have a hundred baptisms 00:11:34.16\00:11:36.32 and the statistics show that after one year 00:11:36.36\00:11:39.53 95 percent of those people have left the church 00:11:39.56\00:11:42.73 because they're not connected, they do not have anyone 00:11:42.76\00:11:46.87 to give them nurturing, to give them encouragement, 00:11:46.90\00:11:50.97 to get them involved in other programs 00:11:51.01\00:11:52.97 and the reason that the New Beginnings DVD program 00:11:53.01\00:11:56.01 is so successful, is... once we form teams 00:11:56.04\00:11:59.81 and once they start these small group home Bible studies, 00:11:59.85\00:12:03.62 with lay people, just like yourselves, 00:12:03.69\00:12:06.29 they become baptized and once they're baptized, 00:12:06.32\00:12:10.83 they get on fire for the Lord 00:12:10.86\00:12:13.76 and they get those people involved in training them 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.97 to become involved in the next new... 00:12:17.00\00:12:19.03 So what kind of retention do we have here? 00:12:19.07\00:12:21.07 Is it better than the large evangelism program? 00:12:21.10\00:12:23.81 It has shown that after five years, 00:12:23.84\00:12:26.31 88 percent of those people are still in the church 00:12:26.34\00:12:30.15 and they're out winning new souls to God's kingdom. 00:12:30.21\00:12:33.98 So, you've been involved in this for a while 00:12:34.02\00:12:36.18 and then you just do this out of your home in Denver 00:12:36.22\00:12:38.69 or have you done this elsewhere? 00:12:38.72\00:12:40.06 No, this New Beginnings DVD Program was started 00:12:40.09\00:12:44.06 in the year 2000 and this was a program 00:12:44.09\00:12:46.73 that was developed by ASI and It is Written... 00:12:46.76\00:12:51.03 Mark Finley at the time was in coordination with this 00:12:51.07\00:12:54.17 and now, we tie in very 00:22:35.05\00:22:37.89 There is one girl, her name is Roxannie, 00:22:37.92\00:22:40.72 she came when she was 13-years old, 00:22:40.76\00:22:43.69 she was... she came from the jungle 00:22:43.73\00:22:47.06 and she came to work in Iquitos... in the city... 00:22:47.10\00:22:50.40 and she got abused by the people that she was living with, 00:22:50.43\00:22:54.20 so, the Court sent her to us and right now, she is 22-years old, 00:22:54.24\00:23:00.78 almost finishing her Nursing, she's going to be a nurse 00:23:00.81\00:23:07.82 in this year, I think, so, we keep going... 00:23:07.85\00:23:13.59 we're doing a lot of good things. 00:23:13.62\00:23:17.03 Yes, so she came to you abused and abandoned 00:23:17.06\00:23:20.26 at age 13 and now she's 22 finishing her Nurse's degree 00:23:20.30\00:23:23.83 and Paul... if I understand correctly 00:23:23.87\00:23:26.94 sponsoring a young person like this 00:23:26.97\00:23:29.84 is about 200 dollars a month? 00:23:29.90\00:23:31.61 Depending on the degree that they choose, 00:23:31.64\00:23:34.38 could be anywhere from 200 to 300 dollars a month 00:23:34.41\00:23:37.35 to put a kid through the university 00:23:37.38\00:23:39.45 and absolutely change their life. 00:23:39.48\00:23:41.45 And so are you able to take everybody who comes to you? 00:23:41.48\00:23:44.82 Sadly, we have requests that come in every week 00:23:44.85\00:23:48.12 to our Organization and there's a drawer 00:23:48.16\00:23:50.13 that's getting more and more requests for help 00:23:50.16\00:23:53.80 and we can only put a kid in the University 00:23:53.83\00:23:56.93 when we have a sponsor. 00:23:56.97\00:23:58.30 So, you're looking for sponsors 00:23:58.33\00:23:59.90 and you have roughly how many applicants in that drawer? 00:23:59.93\00:24:02.77 There are about a hundred students right now. 00:24:02.80\00:24:05.81 Hundred children waiting to be sponsored 00:24:05.84\00:24:07.18 and they're being pulled out of the depths of poverty 00:24:07.21\00:24:10.98 and the garbage dump and abandoned and abused 00:24:11.01\00:24:14.98 and they're ready to go to School, 00:24:15.02\00:24:17.12 they're ready to be sent to the university 00:24:17.15\00:24:19.29 and some of these students are very bright 00:24:19.35\00:24:21.19 and... but there is sometimes... 00:24:21.22\00:24:24.09 you even have one that's gone to Medical School. 00:24:24.13\00:24:26.63 We've graduated several professionals, 00:24:26.66\00:24:29.06 a couple of dentists, a lawyer, a teacher, 00:24:29.13\00:24:31.83 a child psychologist, a mechanical engineer, 00:24:31.87\00:24:34.50 we've got some young people that have done very, very well. 00:24:34.54\00:24:37.11 And this is more costly, I would assume. 00:24:37.14\00:24:38.47 Yeah, it is more costly. 00:24:38.51\00:24:39.84 And so you have other people even from Adventist homes 00:24:39.87\00:24:44.05 who need assistance. 00:24:44.08\00:24:45.71 Absolutely and I'd just like to say 00:24:45.75\00:24:47.78 that Leovina is the very first young person 00:24:47.82\00:24:50.12 that my wife and I met in Peru 00:24:50.19\00:24:52.22 and she started... 00:24:52.25\00:24:53.59 we met her when she was 13-years old 00:24:53.62\00:24:54.96 and I just want to tell you 00:24:54.99\00:24:56.32 that Leovina is now the Executive Director 00:24:56.36\00:24:58.59 of People of Peru Project in Peru. 00:24:58.63\00:25:00.16 And you haven't done this all your life, Paul, 00:25:00.20\00:25:02.46 you were here in the Northwest doing what? NETS... 00:34:02.87\00:34:04.64 and they provided some training for the local churches 00:34:04.67\00:34:07.81 and local church members were moving forward 00:34:07.84\00:34:10.61 and carrying out those Bible Studies. 00:34:10.65\00:34:12.01 I'm still reeling from the fact that young people 00:34:12.05\00:34:16.22 knocked on a quarter of a million doors, 00:34:16.25\00:34:19.15 in a few days... that's... that's incredible, 00:34:19.19\00:34:23.73 that's incredible, now, I... I... 00:34:23.79\00:34:25.96 hear and I sense from what you've shared, Moise, 00:34:25.99\00:34:28.63 that this is personally convicting for the attendees, 00:34:28.66\00:34:34.80 can you share with us an experience of how GYC 00:34:34.84\00:34:38.14 has impacted the life of one of the attendees? 00:34:38.17\00:34:41.38 You know, GYC has had a drastic impact in my own life, 00:34:41.41\00:34:44.51 I attended GYC for the first time when I was 16-years old 00:34:44.55\00:34:47.65 and I was raised as a Seventh-day Adventist 00:34:47.68\00:34:49.58 and I've gone to many youth events and things like that 00:34:49.62\00:34:51.75 but during the time that I went to GYC, 00:34:51.79\00:34:53.76 I was a nominal Seventh-day Adventist, 00:34:53.79\00:34:55.42 I would even go on mission trips and things like that 00:34:55.46\00:34:58.26 then I would go home and get involved 00:34:58.29\00:34:59.73 in things I shouldn't be involved in 00:34:59.76\00:35:01.10 and I remember going to GYC for the first time 00:35:01.13\00:35:03.80 and I looked at the people 00:35:03.83\00:35:05.17 and they were really weird, 00:35:05.20\00:35:06.53 I mean, they dressed a little differently than I did, 00:35:06.57\00:35:08.10 they had religious words that I didn't even know, 00:35:08.14\00:35:10.17 I wasn't familiar with and they just... 00:35:10.21\00:35:12.47 it was almost over my head and it seemed out of my reach 00:35:12.51\00:35:15.54 but I remember thinking it was such an attractive thing 00:35:15.58\00:35:18.58 because for the first time in my life 00:35:18.61\00:35:20.15 I realized that there were dedicated 00:35:20.18\00:35:21.95 Seventh-day Adventist young people 00:35:21.98\00:35:23.72 who loved the Lord and loved the message of this church, 00:35:23.75\00:35:26.55 so, I didn't make any decisions there, 00:35:26.59\00:35:28.52 appeals were made... things like that... 00:35:28.56\00:35:29.89 I didn't go forward but I came back the next year 00:35:29.92\00:35:32.06 and by God's grace, you know, 00:35:32.09\00:35:33.53 Randy Skeete was preaching that evening, 00:35:33.60\00:35:35.43 and he made a call for... 00:35:35.46\00:35:37.00 "How many of you sense that the Lord is leading you 00:35:37.03\00:35:38.83 to: 1. break up with your girlfriend? 00:35:38.87\00:35:40.27 And I... that kind of hit home to me... 00:35:40.30\00:35:41.64 and Number 2: to dedicate a year of your life 00:35:41.67\00:35:45.31 to evangelism and go to Evangelism Training School. 00:35:45.34\00:35:47.68 And I remember going forward for the appeal 00:35:47.71\00:35:49.58 and my girlfriend happened to be sitting next to me at that time, 00:35:49.61\00:35:53.01 but what was amazing 00:35:53.05\00:35:54.38 is that the Lord worked in such a powerful way 00:35:54.42\00:35:56.32 that I knew that I couldn't stay in this condition 00:35:56.35\00:35:58.25 of just being content and entertained in the church, 00:35:58.29\00:36:00.66 but I really needed to dedicate my life to His service 00:36:00.69\00:36:03.16 and so, I went to Amazing Facts Center of Evangelism 00:36:03.22\00:36:05.63 and God worked in powerful ways in transforming my own life 00:36:05.66\00:36:08.16 and I realized the joy of service in the Lord 00:36:08.20\00:36:10.90 and that's what I do at GYC... we have such a burden 00:36:10.93\00:36:13.07 to have young people who love Jesus 00:36:13.13\00:36:15.57 to draw closer to Him 00:36:15.60\00:36:17.37 and also to dedicate their lives to service for Him. 00:36:17.41\00:36:20.41 Amen, so, Moise, wouldn't you say that this is 00:36:20.44\00:36:23.04 why it's really important for our ASI family 00:36:23.11\00:36:25.65 to consider very carefully that we want to sacrifice to give 00:36:25.68\00:36:29.72 ministries like GYC 00:36:29.75\00:36:31.12 funding to support the efforts that are being planned? 00:36:31.15\00:36:33.76 You know, Debbie, it's more than just money 00:36:33.79\00:36:36.62 because when you invest in GYC, 00:36:36.66\00:36:39.79 you're really investing into the future 00:36:39.83\00:36:43.10 of the Adventist Church 00:36:43.13\00:36:44.63 and if we believe in the young people, 00:36:44.70\00:36:48.44 not only... don't only give your money, 00:36:48.47\00:36:52.17 but give your presence, 00:36:52.24\00:36:54.01 they say: the most meaningful relationships 00:36:54.04\00:36:57.25 for Millennials is inter-generational relationships 00:36:57.28\00:37:01.65 if you ask a young person, you say, 00:37:01.68\00:37:03.89 "Who are the people that impacted your life?" 00:37:03.92\00:37:05.89 They're less likely to say, 00:37:05.95\00:37:08.66 "Well, you know, 'My friend,'" 00:37:08.69\00:37:11.63 but they are more likely to say my grandma, my grandpa, 00:37:11.66\00:37:16.26 the pastor, the teacher, my coach, 00:37:16.30\00:37:19.83 and that is why we need each other in this work 00:37:19.87\00:37:23.00 because we believe that Jesus is coming soon 00:37:23.07\00:37:26.17 and we want to hasten His coming. 00:37:26.21\00:37:28.28 Amen, Moise and Taylor, God bless you, 00:37:28.31\00:37:30.05 and we thank you for your commitment to GYC. 00:37:30.08\00:37:32.15 Thank you so much. 00:37:32.21\00:37:33.55 Next... for our 00:37:33.58\00:37:36.99 Offering in Action Segment, 00:37:37.02\00:37:38.82 is a project that is dear to my heart 00:37:38.85\00:37:41.62 because I'm a Registered Nurse 00:37:41.66\00:37:42.99 and this has to do with the Weimar, 00:37:43.02\00:37:44.93 what I would call the School of Nursing, 00:37:44.96\00:37:46.70 thinking back in my history of how we would term 00:37:46.73\00:37:50.50 this Institution but this is actually 00:37:50.53\00:37:53.34 something a little bit different, 00:37:53.37\00:37:56.14 you actually call it "Win" and with me is Neil Nedley, 00:37:56.17\00:38:00.54 he's the President for Weimar 00:38:00.58\00:38:02.54 and Lenora Follet who is the Director of Nursing, 00:38:02.58\00:38:07.52 and Randy Bivens who's the Chief Operating Officer. 00:38:07.55\00:38:12.49 Thank you for coming so that you can share with us a little bit 00:38:12.52\00:38:15.26 more about this exciting project. 00:38:15.32\00:38:16.66 So, what is WIN? 00:38:16.69\00:38:18.03 Weimar Institute of Nursing. 00:38:18.06\00:38:21.00 Debbie: Ah... okay... okay, excellent. 00:38:21.03\00:38:23.00 Neil: That's what it stands for. 00:38:23.03\00:38:24.37 And how did the idea of WIN get started at Weimar? 00:38:24.40\00:38:27.90 Well, Weimar is a... of course, a Sanitarium, 00:38:27.94\00:38:31.34 it's a Lifestyle Center, 00:38:31.37\00:38:32.97 we've been doing health and healing there for many years 00:38:33.01\00:38:35.51 and it's also an educational institution 00:38:35.54\00:38:38.55 and as we began to study the counsel 00:38:38.58\00:38:41.52 from the Spirit of Prophecy, it's very clear that she wanted 00:38:41.58\00:38:44.52 nurses trained at places where there were Sanitariums 00:38:44.55\00:38:49.29 and in fact she said, "Our nurses are to go out 00:38:49.32\00:38:52.69 as Medical Evangelists teaching the Word 00:38:52.73\00:38:56.60 as well as physical healing" 00:38:56.63\00:38:58.93 and so the gospel in Medical Missionary work 00:38:58.97\00:39:02.00 were to be combined 00:39:02.04\00:39:03.37 and you know when we looked at Madison, 00:39:03.41\00:39:05.21 they had a Nursing Program and graduated a lot of nurses 00:39:05.24\00:39:08.88 and it seemed right 00:39:08.91\00:39:10.31 that for what we were doing at Weimar it was time... 00:39:10.35\00:39:13.21 with our Pre-Med Program that we had in place 00:39:13.25\00:39:15.25 and all of those Sciences 00:39:15.28\00:39:16.62 to then go into a potential for a Nursing Program. 00:39:16.65\00:39:20.86 Now, I understand Randy that it was very evident 00:39:20.89\00:39:25.13 that God was leading in this process 00:39:25.16\00:39:28.36 when you went before... like a Board... 00:39:28.40\00:39:31.57 can you share a little bit of that experience? 00:39:31.60\00:39:33.67 Yeah, the Board of Registered Nurses, 00:39:33.70\00:39:35.40 there's a committee called the ELC... 00:39:35.44\00:39:37.21 the Educational Licensing Committee 00:39:37.24\00:39:38.87 and we had to go before that Board before the whole BRN... 00:39:38.91\00:39:42.68 the Board of Registered Nurses would actually meet, 00:39:42.71\00:39:44.51 grant and approve our program 00:39:44.55\00:39:46.05 and... it's kind of a Disciplinary Board 00:39:46.08\00:39:49.48 in addition to a Licensing Board 00:39:49.52\00:39:51.32 and most of what they were doing was discipline 00:39:51.35\00:39:53.56 and there was a Board... 00:39:53.59\00:39:55.26 actually a Nursing Program in Sacramento 00:39:55.29\00:39:57.36 who had lost their affiliation with the local hospital 00:39:57.43\00:40:00.23 and they were going to affiliate with a hospital sixty miles away 00:40:00.26\00:40:03.26 and the Chairman of this Committee 00:40:03.30\00:40:05.40 was just chewing them up, 00:40:05.43\00:40:06.77 I mean, I'm thinking... and he was saying, 00:40:06.80\00:40:08.27 "You're going to have them drive... 00:40:08.30\00:40:10.27 and increase their time on the road" 00:40:10.31\00:40:11.94 and all those things and we're over there saying, 00:40:11.97\00:40:15.11 "Wow! we have clinical sites all over the map... " 00:40:15.14\00:40:18.31 we have Loma Linda which is like 350 miles away, 00:40:18.35\00:40:21.42 he's going to chew us up and spit us out, were toast, 00:40:21.48\00:40:25.15 when he got to us he said, 00:40:25.19\00:40:28.32 "What are you going to do about transporting these nurses?" 00:40:28.36\00:40:30.63 And Dr. Shirley Anderson who was there with us 00:40:30.66\00:40:33.29 and was very instrumental in getting this program, 00:40:33.33\00:40:35.90 she said, "Well, Dr. Bivens is here 00:40:35.93\00:40:37.73 and he's our Chief Operating Officer 00:40:37.77\00:40:39.53 why don't you ask him if he's going to pay 00:40:39.57\00:40:42.10 to have those nurses moved" and I said, 00:40:42.14\00:40:44.64 "Well, okay, yeah, we're going to transport them" 00:40:44.67\00:40:48.44 and he said, "Great, why didn't that other School say that?" 00:40:48.48\00:40:51.61 We went up afterward, we spoke to him, 00:40:51.65\00:40:54.72 Dr. Sebo and I talked to him and he said, 00:40:54.75\00:40:57.65 "I know you Adventists... " 00:40:57.69\00:40:59.72 he goes, "my uncle was a teacher at Oakwood College," 00:40:59.75\00:41:04.06 God had gone before us. 00:41:04.13\00:41:07.33 Amen, amen and Lenora Follet, you've been an Administrator 00:41:07.36\00:41:13.34 in... a high-level Administrator for many years 00:41:13.40\00:41:18.17 in various Institutions overseeing Nursing Programs 00:41:18.21\00:41:22.88 but you had such excitement when we were talking in the back 00:41:22.94\00:41:26.41 about this particular program, 00:41:26.45\00:41:28.48 why is this especially significant for you? 00:41:28.52\00:41:31.32 When I took nursing, it was at Loma Linda... 00:41:31.35\00:41:34.09 at the time... when they were doing hydrotherapy, 00:41:34.12\00:41:37.33 and massage and I remember Dr. Butterfield 00:41:37.36\00:41:40.16 there at Loma Linda University Hospital 00:41:40.20\00:41:42.93 ordered a lot of fomentations for his patients 00:41:42.96\00:41:46.57 after surgery and some of them really didn't 00:41:46.60\00:41:50.17 want it at first, 00:41:50.21\00:41:51.54 but when they had the fomentations, 00:41:51.57\00:41:53.68 they said, "That really helped" 00:41:53.71\00:41:55.94 and then, I always wished that I could work in a place 00:41:55.98\00:42:02.48 where I could do that again as I moved around 00:42:02.52\00:42:05.19 and when I was in Nursing Schools, 00:42:05.22\00:42:07.26 I kept wishing that we could incorporate 00:42:07.29\00:42:10.46 those natural remedies into our Nursing Program 00:42:10.53\00:42:13.96 and now I'm at my dream job 00:42:14.00\00:42:17.57 because that's just what they want us to do 00:42:17.60\00:42:20.94 at Weimar and the Board has approved 00:42:20.97\00:42:23.71 our classes in learning that and we're just so... 00:42:23.77\00:42:27.11 I'm so thankful that I can work there, 00:42:27.14\00:42:30.65 I'm very thankful. 00:42:30.68\00:42:32.01 I told them, it feels like, I want to go to school again 00:42:32.05\00:42:34.12 and they invited me to come back 00:42:34.15\00:42:36.38 but I said, "I think I'm done... " 00:42:36.42\00:42:38.62 so... so that's good, so coming full circle now 00:42:38.65\00:42:41.52 back Neil to what you were saying 00:42:41.56\00:42:44.06 that we want to follow the counsel that has been given, 00:42:44.09\00:42:47.76 that nurses should be trained as medical evangelists. 00:42:47.80\00:42:50.97 You know, interestingly, when we were submitting our 00:42:51.00\00:42:54.24 material, we were very overt 00:42:54.27\00:42:56.17 that we were going to be training our nurses 00:42:56.20\00:42:59.74 as Evangelists as well as in health education 00:42:59.77\00:43:03.28 and Dr. Andersen reminded me today 00:43:03.31\00:43:06.51 of how when we presented these health classes, 00:43:06.58\00:43:09.92 the Nursing Board Liaison was looking 00:43:09.95\00:43:12.32 and saying, "So, how does this fit in, 00:43:12.35\00:43:14.66 it's not under OB, it's not under Med-Surg," 00:43:14.69\00:43:17.73 she was trying to find out how this all fits in 00:43:17.76\00:43:20.76 and finally when they realized 00:43:20.80\00:43:23.70 that our nurses were actually going to be putting on 00:43:23.73\00:43:25.77 Depression and Anxiety Recovery Programs 00:43:25.80\00:43:28.14 and CHIP Programs as part of their training, 00:43:28.17\00:43:30.47 she looked and she said, 00:43:30.51\00:43:32.14 "This isn't public health... this is total health" 00:43:32.17\00:43:35.54 and with the evangelism component, 00:43:35.58\00:43:39.81 she says, "You know what? 00:43:39.85\00:43:41.18 This is a different nursing program" 00:43:41.22\00:43:42.78 she says, "we pride ourselves in California 00:43:42.82\00:43:46.25 as being Alternative Medicine State, 00:43:46.29\00:43:49.29 but we need an alternative medicine nursing program 00:43:49.32\00:43:52.76 and you'll be the very first one. " 00:43:52.79\00:43:54.73 Audience clapping... Debbie: Amen... 00:43:54.76\00:43:58.60 And it turns out... we're the first one in the entire Country. 00:43:58.63\00:44:01.80 Say that again, did everyone hear that? 00:44:01.84\00:44:03.81 We're the first alternative medicine nursing program 00:44:03.84\00:44:06.71 in the entire Country, 00:44:06.74\00:44:08.21 Debbie: Amen, amen... 00:44:08.24\00:44:09.64 Neil: and it's one that, of course, 00:44:09.68\00:44:11.45 they'll sit for the Boards 00:44:11.48\00:44:13.01 but they'll also come out as health educators 00:44:13.05\00:44:15.75 and they'll be also teaching the Word 00:44:15.78\00:44:18.19 in combination with physical healing. 00:44:18.22\00:44:20.56 Praise God, praise God, thank you very much 00:44:20.59\00:44:22.72 for sharing with us about the Weimar Institute of Nursing, 00:44:22.79\00:44:27.13 our last Offering in Action Project 00:44:27.20\00:44:31.03 is one that you will not find in your booklet, 00:44:31.07\00:44:33.74 it is one that we have added 00:44:33.77\00:44:35.74 because it's of special significance 00:44:35.77\00:44:38.07 with all that has been in the media 00:44:38.11\00:44:40.38 and all the debates about Creation versus Evolution, 00:44:40.41\00:44:43.81 we have felt that it's extremely important for us 00:44:43.85\00:44:46.98 to under-gird the efforts that are being made 00:44:47.02\00:44:50.59 to strengthen the Biblical Creation Story, 00:44:50.62\00:44:54.16 particularly in our curriculum 00:44:54.19\00:44:56.42 that we are providing to educate our children at every level. 00:44:56.46\00:45:00.20 So, this particular project which we have termed 00:45:00.23\00:45:02.90 "The Creation Project" is one that is for... 00:45:02.93\00:45:05.57 we're requesting 40,000 dollars 00:45:05.60\00:45:09.00 to provide the support to continue this work. 00:45:09.04\00:45:11.97 With me is Ed Zinke, 00:45:12.01\00:45:13.68 he's retired from Biblical Research 00:45:13.71\00:45:15.44 and has his hands in a number of different areas 00:45:15.51\00:45:18.28 but we're happy to have him here 00:45:18.31\00:45:20.05 and Larry Blackmer who is the Vice President 00:45:20.08\00:45:22.85 for North American Division Education. 00:45:22.88\00:45:25.15 So they're going to share with us a little bit 00:45:25.19\00:45:27.22 about what two schools are doing 00:45:27.26\00:45:31.06 in this particular line of work, Ed... 00:45:31.09\00:45:34.23 Yes, thank you very much indeed Creation is extremely 00:45:34.26\00:45:39.03 important to us as a church not just Creation... 00:45:39.07\00:45:43.20 but Biblical Creation. 00:45:43.24\00:45:45.41 In 1980, the church revised a statement 00:45:45.44\00:45:49.94 of belief and revised the statement on Creation, 00:45:49.98\00:45:53.42 there seemed like the statement was clear enough, 00:45:53.45\00:45:57.52 that Creation took place in six actual days... 00:45:57.55\00:46:01.59 a short period of time ago... 00:46:01.62\00:46:04.13 but many individuals... 00:46:04.19\00:46:07.13 some individuals have re-interpreted that statement 00:46:07.16\00:46:10.17 to mean that God created over millions and millions of years 00:46:10.20\00:46:14.90 and each day represented millions of years 00:46:14.94\00:46:18.24 and so some felt that it was necessary 00:46:18.27\00:46:21.98 to tighten that statement up and in 2010 00:46:22.01\00:46:25.61 at the General Conference Session there was a request 00:46:25.65\00:46:28.05 for a study to be made to that... 00:46:28.08\00:46:29.98 that was brought back to the General Conference Session 00:46:30.02\00:46:33.99 this last time and the statement was clarified 00:46:34.02\00:46:36.93 and it would be very difficult to read anything other than 00:46:36.99\00:46:40.86 six actual days... seven... when you include the Sabbath 00:46:40.90\00:46:45.30 seven days more or less like our week, 00:46:45.33\00:46:48.10 the other thing that some individuals that felt that 00:46:48.14\00:46:52.44 worldwide flood which was in our 1980 statement 00:46:52.47\00:46:56.44 meant that the "then-known world" 00:46:56.51\00:46:59.48 and so it didn't mean the whole world, 00:46:59.51\00:47:01.48 it just meant that there was a big flood 00:47:01.52\00:47:03.39 and so that also was changed at the General Conference Session 00:47:03.42\00:47:07.22 to mean... to say... "Global Flood" 00:47:07.26\00:47:11.06 rather than world-wide flood. 00:47:11.09\00:47:14.13 Now, several institutions... educational institutions 00:47:14.20\00:47:19.77 within the church are 00:47:19.80\00:47:21.70 taking very seriously the doctrine of Creation 00:47:21.74\00:47:25.94 and they have done extensive study 00:47:25.97\00:47:29.44 in Geology and Biology and other areas 00:47:29.48\00:47:32.85 supporting the Biblical account of Creation, 00:47:32.88\00:47:37.32 one of those is Southern Adventist University 00:47:37.35\00:47:41.69 also Southwestern Adventist University 00:47:41.72\00:47:44.23 and at the Earth and Biological Sciences Program at Loma Linda 00:47:44.26\00:47:48.83 is the only place in the world 00:47:48.86\00:47:52.23 in which you can get a Ph. D. in Geology or Biology 00:47:52.30\00:47:56.67 from a Biblical perspective. 00:47:56.71\00:47:58.71 Now we are supporting two of those programs 00:47:58.74\00:48:01.31 at this ASI Convention 00:48:01.34\00:48:04.51 and Larry will tell us about Southern Adventist University 00:48:04.55\00:48:07.98 and then I'll tell you about Southwestern. 00:48:08.02\00:48:13.05 Why is Creation important to the Church? 00:48:13.09\00:48:18.69 In 2014, the Gallup Poll did a survey 00:48:18.73\00:48:24.27 of the general population and they found out that 00:48:24.30\00:48:28.37 42 percent said they were Creationists 00:48:28.40\00:48:31.14 and that 31 percent said they were Theistic Evolutionists 00:48:31.17\00:48:36.14 and only 19 percent said they were straight out Evolutionists. 00:48:36.18\00:48:41.25 The difficulty is, "What is a Creationist?" 00:48:41.28\00:48:45.62 in defining what a Creationist really is 00:48:45.65\00:48:49.39 because many people say they're Creationists 00:48:49.42\00:48:53.09 but they believe in "millions of years" 00:48:53.13\00:48:55.46 through that process 00:48:55.50\00:48:56.83 and so, it's been our goal in the church 00:48:56.87\00:49:00.97 through the educational system, 00:49:01.00\00:49:02.67 through higher education to make sure that we present 00:49:02.70\00:49:07.71 a Biblical foundation to Creationism. 00:49:07.74\00:49:11.91 The... there was a survey done recently 00:49:11.95\00:49:15.75 by the Pugh Group and they found out that 00:49:15.78\00:49:19.55 in the Adventist Church, 47 percent 00:49:19.59\00:49:22.76 believed that the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:49:22.79\00:49:25.63 is anti-Science, 00:49:25.69\00:49:28.20 are we anti-Science? 00:49:28.23\00:49:30.43 We're not! 00:49:30.47\00:49:31.80 but we have somehow convinced our young people 00:49:31.83\00:49:35.50 that the Adventist Church does not believe in Science. 00:49:35.54\00:49:38.17 We believe in the Church and in our Institutions 00:49:38.21\00:49:43.38 that there is real good Science behind Creation 00:49:43.41\00:49:48.55 and so we're trying to find ways 00:49:48.58\00:49:50.89 to make sure that happens. 00:49:50.95\00:49:52.62 The Biblical account... 00:49:52.65\00:49:54.26 Creation is all the way through the Biblical account. 00:49:54.29\00:49:57.19 It's in the Old Testament, 00:49:57.23\00:49:59.16 it's mentioned by every single New Testament Writer 00:49:59.19\00:50:03.37 and Creation is actually talked about... by Jesus Himself. 00:50:03.40\00:50:07.47 So it is an important issue. 00:50:07.54\00:50:09.20 Creation is closely tied to... and I have here... 00:50:09.24\00:50:13.21 15 different doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:50:13.24\00:50:18.81 in which Creation is directly tied. 00:50:18.85\00:50:22.58 Creation is fundamental to our Church. 00:50:22.62\00:50:26.82 Last year, I stood up on the platform 00:50:26.86\00:50:30.99 and told you about our new by design... Science curriculum, 00:50:31.03\00:50:36.30 Grades one through eight developed distinctly by 00:50:36.33\00:50:39.53 Seventh-day Adventists 00:50:39.57\00:50:40.90 for Seventh-day Adventist Schools 00:50:40.94\00:50:42.84 based on a Biblical account of Creation 00:50:42.90\00:50:46.07 and it's a North America Division Initiative, 00:50:46.11\00:50:50.41 it's both Health and Science combined. 00:50:50.45\00:50:52.95 We have also now through Southern Adventist University 00:50:52.98\00:50:59.12 and their local project... created a lot of other resources 00:50:59.15\00:51:04.66 these resources could be used by design separately 00:51:04.69\00:51:08.93 through the School System, 00:51:08.96\00:51:10.30 they can be used by home schooling families, 00:51:10.37\00:51:12.57 by Christian families 00:51:12.60\00:51:13.94 whose kids are in... 00:51:13.97\00:51:15.30 whose students are in public school 00:51:15.34\00:51:17.31 and by Lay Persons of all ages 00:51:17.34\00:51:19.97 and it's available online free. 00:51:20.01\00:51:22.61 There are many other projects we have in the pipeline. 00:51:22.64\00:51:26.45 We're actually... Dr. Tim Standish is the 00:51:26.48\00:51:29.82 Editor of our new Ninth Grade Biology textbook, 00:51:29.88\00:51:34.32 that we're now going to have the Life Science Series 00:51:34.36\00:51:38.33 totally developed by Seventh-day Adventists 00:51:38.39\00:51:41.16 for our Schools. 00:51:41.23\00:51:42.56 We are creating a set of videos about Adventist Scientists. 00:51:42.60\00:51:47.20 Science is alive and well in the Adventist Church 00:51:47.24\00:51:51.47 and we have world renowned Scientists 00:51:51.51\00:51:55.04 that belong to our Church. 00:51:55.08\00:51:56.68 We're developing dinosaur videos and interactives, 00:51:56.71\00:52:00.45 we're designing a College-level "Origins" class 00:52:00.48\00:52:04.19 with Faith and Science in Southern Adventist University 00:52:04.22\00:52:08.02 and we have a Chemistry Professor at Andrews University 00:52:08.06\00:52:12.56 who's working on materials about Design in Chemistry. 00:52:12.59\00:52:17.10 We're developing interactives and simulations 00:52:17.13\00:52:21.40 that can go along with "By Design.
