So we're going to try and answer
when the remnant will appear,

to this special group?

Now the
Seventh-day Adventist church

mission to fulfill,

go to all of the world:

That is the mission.

But the Seventh-day
Adventist church also has

a special message that it
needs to take to the world.

that is a special characteristic

So there are three things
that distinguish the Seventh-day

Adventist church, I believe,
from every church in the world.

mission; secondly, our message;

our method of interpreting

Bible prophecy. Now
what do I mean when I speak

about the method?

The Seventh-day Adventist church

has a method which has
come to be known as historicism.

I prefer to call it
the historical flow method.

Basically, this method of
interpreting Bible prophecy

allows us to follow
the trajectory or the flow

of historical events from the
days in which the prophet wrote

until the final consummation.

There are no gaps or
parentheses or interruptions

in the flow of
history... of prophetic history.

It is a
continuous sequence of events

without any parentheses or
interruptions which allows us

to know exactly where we are
in the flow of prophetic history

That is the

Let me give you an
example from scripture:

Daniel chapter 7.

When does that prophecy begin?

It begins with the
lion in the days of Daniel.

Then you have another
kingdom: the Medes and Persians.

That's the next kingdom...
no interruption between them.

Then you have another
kingdom which is the leopard
00:12:35.65\00:12:38.25
that represents Greece.
00:12:38.39\00:12:40.22
No interruption
between Medo-Persia and Greece.

Then you have a dragon beast.

We call it the
non-descript beast.

And this beast has 3
stages... in Daniel 7, at least,

three stages of existence.

The first stage is
this dragon beast by itself.

And then after a
while it sprouts ten horns.

And then among the ten
horns comes forth a little horn.

And so this dragon beast
has three stages of existence

consecutive in Daniel chapter 7.

And when we go to Revelation
13 we're going to notice

that there is a fourth stage
that is not directly mentioned

So we have Babylon, Medo-Persia,
Greece, the Roman Empire,

the division of the
Roman Empire into ten kingdoms,

and then you have the little
horn - which is another Rome -

which represents the
Roman Catholic papacy.

And then after that you
have the scene of the judgment

in heaven - which is a pre-
Advent investigative judgment.

And then after that the
time comes for God's saints

to inherit the kingdom.

You've moved from
the times of Daniel

all the way
till the end of time.

You've watched the historical
flow and there have been no

parentheses; no
gaps; no interruptions.

Is this point clear? This
is the historical flow method.

But the chapter that I
especially want us to study

Revelation chapter 12

because that's where
our remnant verse is found:

Now I want to mention
that in Revelation chapter 12

you have 3 main historical
stages that are described.
00:14:22.52\00:14:27.20
First of all, the dragon
wants to slay the Male Child.
00:14:27.60\00:14:33.03
That's the first enmity.
00:14:33.27\00:14:35.24
Secondly, the dragon
wants to destroy the woman
00:14:35.37\00:14:39.27
and he tries to do this
for a period of 1,260 years.
00:14:39.51\00:14:43.51
And then after the 1,260 years
00:14:43.65\00:14:46.48
we are told that
the dragon is enraged
00:14:46.82\00:14:49.58
with the remnant
of the woman's seed.
00:14:49.72\00:14:51.89
So in other words, the
dragon has three stages
00:14:52.12\00:14:55.06
in which he tries to destroy
Christ and Christ's people.
00:14:55.19\00:14:59.49
He goes after the Child
then he goes after the woman
00:14:59.73\00:15:03.13
and finally he goes after
the remnant of the woman's seed.

Now there are three backdrops
to Revelation chapter 12.

Unfortunately we only have time
to study one of those backdrops.

In order to fully
understand this chapter

we have to understand the
story of the birth of Moses.

You remember that
when Moses was born

Pharaoh attempted to kill him.

That is in the
background of this story

of Revelation chapter 12.

Another background is the story
of Elijah in the wilderness

because we are told that
the woman fled to the wilderness

where she was fed for
3-1/2 symbolic years...

exactly what happened to Elijah.
00:15:44.41\00:15:46.27
But the background that is
especially behind the scenes
00:15:47.01\00:15:50.88
in Revelation chapter
12 is my favorite verse

in the whole
Bible: Genesis 3:15.

So let's go to
Genesis chapter 3 and verse 15

and let's notice what we find
in this very powerful verse.

in Genesis chapter 3 verse 15.

Here God is
speaking to the serpent.

Of course the serpent has
just led Adam and Eve into sin.

And God tells the
serpent: "I will put enmity... "

That's the first element
that I want you to notice here.

"I will put
enmity between you... "

that is, the
dragon or the serpent...

"and the woman. "
Number 3 is the woman.

"and between your seed... " that
is, the seed of the serpent...

and then we are
told: "and her seed. "

So we have five elements.

We have enmity;
we have a serpent;

we have a woman; we
have the woman's seed;

and we have the serpent's seed.

Five elements: enmity,
the serpent, the woman,

and the woman's seed.

Now we find all of these ele-
ments in Revelation chapter 12.

where this woman is introduced.

a woman, clothed with the sun

Then being with child
she cried out in labor

and in pain to give birth. "

Now the question is: what
does this woman represent?

You know, we know that
literally Mary brought Jesus
00:17:42.86\00:17:45.63
into the world. But the woman
here does not represent Mary

because we're told that
later on the woman flees
00:17:49.73\00:17:51.97
to the
wilderness for 1,260 years.
00:17:52.00\00:17:54.87
And so the woman represents
the Old Testament church:

the line of faithful individuals

from which Jesus
Christ will come.

Because when John sees the woman

the woman has not
had the Child yet.

So in other words, the
woman pre-exists the Child.

And so the woman represents
the Old Testament church that

coming of the Messiah.

But there's something that
appears to be missing here.
