Amen! 00:01:19.41\00:01:22.34 We are talking about the second coming. 00:01:22.68\00:01:25.25 The day will come when you could be driving down the road, 00:01:25.48\00:01:28.62 working in your garden, going to the grocery store 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.85 or whatever the case may be and that little cloud that 00:01:31.89\00:01:36.46 appears as a man's hand will be growing bigger and bigger 00:01:36.49\00:01:39.46 and eventually you will hear the sound of trumpets 00:01:39.69\00:01:43.63 and the mighty glory of Jesus and the angels. 00:01:44.07\00:01:48.30 And the sky will be lit 00:01:48.64\00:01:51.97 with the glory of that majestic second coming. 00:01:52.11\00:01:56.98 And I hope you'll be among those that their heart rejoices 00:01:57.78\00:02:01.65 and they say: "Finally the time has come 00:02:01.68\00:02:04.69 for our redemption from this evil world! And so we hope you have pens; Bible ready 00:02:34.58\00:02:38.89 and paper to be able to jot down this information. 00:02:39.12\00:02:42.09 And with this information you will be able to take a look 00:02:42.32\00:02:45.89 at the prophecies and understand the correct way 00:02:45.93\00:02:48.43 to interpret these prophecies and to stand on sure ground. 00:02:48.56\00:02:52.67 Amen? Amen. 00:02:52.90\00:02:54.40 Before Ty Gibson presents this message 00:02:54.54\00:02:57.57 we are blessed to have Sr. Celestine and Michael Barry. 00:02:57.61\00:03:01.94 Michael will be at the piano and Celestine will be singing 00:03:02.08\00:03:06.25 a hymn - very well known but very powerful - 00:03:06.48\00:03:09.85 The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power. 00:03:09.98\00:03:14.09 Before she sings and before the message 00:03:14.42\00:03:16.66 we would like to invite you to pray. 00:03:16.79\00:03:18.16 And if it is possible for you we'd like to invite you to 00:03:18.19\00:03:20.03 stand. Amen! 00:08:06.41\00:08:08.55 Celestine, Michael... thank you. 00:08:11.92\00:08:13.82 Good afternoon everybody. Good afternoon! 00:08:14.16\00:08:16.73 I'm so glad to... Happy Birthday, Ty! 00:08:16.86\00:08:20.26 OK. 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.30 All the evidence I need 00:08:25.10\00:08:27.40 that James preached some time before me today. 00:08:29.14\00:08:33.04 But here's the fact of the matter; here's the fact of 00:08:35.11\00:08:37.35 the matter: I don't need that circumstantial evidence 00:08:37.38\00:08:40.12 because James thinks he's slick. 00:08:40.45\00:08:44.79 He thinks that he had a private conversation with you 00:08:45.02\00:08:49.06 forgetting the fact that this is on the airwaves 00:08:49.29\00:08:52.69 around the world 00:08:52.83\00:08:54.73 and that 3ABN is available in the very hotel room 00:08:56.13\00:08:59.77 where I was staying. 00:08:59.80\00:09:01.34 And I flipped it on knowing he was going to preach 00:09:03.04\00:09:06.27 at that particular time, and I stood there listening 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.78 to him preach because he tends to have things worth knowing. 00:09:08.81\00:09:12.55 So I knew... As soon as I walked on campus here 00:09:14.02\00:09:18.22 people were smiling at me. Sending me texts. 00:09:18.35\00:09:21.39 But listen, listen, here's what I know about James: 00:09:21.72\00:09:25.26 first of all, he's driving right now so he won't know 00:09:27.56\00:09:30.10 anything I'm about to share with you. 00:09:30.13\00:09:31.87 Second of all, I refer to him as 00:09:32.30\00:09:35.70 Elder James... not by virtue of ordination 00:09:35.84\00:09:40.68 but by virtue of age. That's right. 00:09:41.01\00:09:44.28 That is as a synonym for "Old Dude. " 00:09:44.51\00:09:48.18 James is older than me, but I want to tell you 00:09:48.52\00:09:50.79 something else about James because this Camp Meeting theme 00:09:50.82\00:09:53.42 is about the second advent, the second coming. 00:09:53.46\00:09:55.79 James and I began serving the Lord very early 00:09:56.12\00:10:00.03 and preaching the Word at a very young age together. 00:10:00.16\00:10:04.20 And James was so convicted that Jesus was coming soon - 00:10:04.53\00:10:10.11 and rightly so - that he said: "I'll never get married. " 00:10:10.24\00:10:14.08 I said: "Is that right? " 00:10:14.31\00:10:16.04 But he kept hanging around my house, and my wife was 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.78 making him clothes and feeding him 00:10:18.81\00:10:21.32 and just a great arrangement for James. 00:10:21.45\00:10:25.49 So I began to develop a conviction - straight from 00:10:27.36\00:10:30.23 the Lord, no doubt - that James ought to get married. 00:10:30.26\00:10:33.29 But James was sure that he shouldn't get married 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.87 because time was so short. 00:10:37.00\00:10:39.17 And then we had a Camp Meeting, and during that Camp Meeting 00:10:39.40\00:10:42.67 James made the acquaintance of a young lady. 00:10:42.80\00:10:45.91 We were all very young then. 00:10:46.04\00:10:47.81 And after the Camp Meeting he came to me 00:10:48.04\00:10:50.51 and he said: "Ty, I met this girl but you know I'm convicted 00:10:50.75\00:10:54.78 not to get married. " I said: "Yeah, I know you're 00:10:54.92\00:10:56.22 convicted not to get married but tell me about her. " 00:10:56.25\00:10:59.59 So he proceeded to tell me about this girl 00:11:01.52\00:11:03.76 that he met at Camp Meeting. 00:11:03.89\00:11:06.49 And I said: "James, here's what you need to do: 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.60 you need to write her a letter and you need to say something 00:11:08.83\00:11:12.40 like: 'My name is James. We met briefly. 00:11:12.43\00:11:15.90 You were at the Camp Meeting. 00:11:16.04\00:11:17.31 I would like to begin communication with you 00:11:17.44\00:11:19.74 to explore the possibility of marriage. ' " 00:11:19.77\00:11:22.01 He said: "That's not how you do it, is it? " 00:11:26.68\00:11:29.42 And I said: "When you believe that Jesus is coming soon, 00:11:30.99\00:11:33.99 brother, that's how you do it. 00:11:34.02\00:11:35.86 We're running out of time and we need to get you married up. " 00:11:36.09\00:11:39.53 He was absolutely determined not to get married; 00:11:39.86\00:11:43.10 I was absolutely determined that he would and should 00:11:43.33\00:11:45.67 get married just so there was somebody else to spend time 00:11:45.70\00:11:48.47 with him... although I enjoy thoroughly spending time 00:11:48.50\00:11:52.01 with him. One little part that you need to know 00:11:52.04\00:11:55.04 actually preparatory to our message, and that is this: 00:11:55.08\00:11:57.85 that he almost got hitched to a girl before the one... 00:11:58.18\00:12:02.35 Well, by the way... that girl actually wrote back. 00:12:02.38\00:12:04.49 He was so nervous: "She's not going to go for this. " 00:12:04.62\00:12:07.42 She wrote back and said: "Yes, let's begin communication. " 00:12:07.56\00:12:11.03 I said: "She will respect the fact that you got down to 00:12:11.26\00:12:13.70 business. " But there was a girl before that, 00:12:13.73\00:12:17.23 and he almost married her and I talked him out of that. 00:12:17.37\00:12:22.57 And you know why? 00:12:22.80\00:12:24.24 Because the only reason he considered marrying her 00:12:24.57\00:12:28.44 is because she was one of the very few human beings - 00:12:28.58\00:12:31.91 and the only female - who would listen to his entire two-day 00:12:32.05\00:12:36.15 explanation of the 7 trumpets. 00:12:36.18\00:12:38.42 And she believed it; she got it; it registered. 00:12:41.42\00:12:44.16 And he came to me excited: "She understands 00:12:44.29\00:12:47.56 the 7 trumpets. " I said: "James, that is a rare find! 00:12:47.66\00:12:51.03 That is a rare find that you found a girl 00:12:52.30\00:12:55.10 that understands the 7 trumpets. 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.77 But you're going to want to kiss her at some point 00:12:57.91\00:13:00.28 so you're going to have to make sure 00:13:00.51\00:13:02.38 that you are attracted on all levels... 00:13:02.41\00:13:05.25 not just the prophetic level. " Anyways... 00:13:05.38\00:13:09.12 So don't tell James I said any of that. 00:13:09.55\00:13:11.59 But it's all true. Well we need to get into the message. 00:13:13.25\00:13:16.29 You have seen the title, haven't you? 00:13:16.42\00:13:18.59 The title of this message? 00:13:18.73\00:13:20.16 The Schools of Interpretation. 00:13:20.30\00:13:22.36 How many of you salivate at the word school? 00:13:22.70\00:13:25.90 Me neither. 00:13:26.30\00:13:27.80 That title is such that I'm surprised that you're here. 00:13:28.04\00:13:32.61 Some of you could be napping right now 00:13:33.34\00:13:35.41 because that just does not sound very fascinating. 00:13:35.64\00:13:39.88 Doesn't sound interesting. 00:13:40.12\00:13:41.58 But I'm here to tell you that it's vitally important 00:13:41.92\00:13:45.32 that we understand that the Bible is written 00:13:45.55\00:13:50.46 in particular patterns. 00:13:50.49\00:13:52.69 There's a grid... there's a language to it. 00:13:53.03\00:13:56.26 God inspired the prophets to write these things 00:13:56.70\00:14:01.07 and God Himself - when He inspired these things - 00:14:01.30\00:14:05.47 had the interpretation in mind. 00:14:05.71\00:14:09.24 God knows what it means, and so just on a literary level 00:14:09.68\00:14:14.42 the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation 00:14:14.65\00:14:16.85 are an artistic wonder. 00:14:16.99\00:14:18.82 They are an incredibly beautiful coherent seamless 00:14:19.05\00:14:23.76 explanation of events that would transpire one after another 00:14:23.89\00:14:28.83 down through the corridors of time. 00:14:28.96\00:14:30.73 Now what we're about to discover is that God has 00:14:31.07\00:14:35.34 put in the prophecies themselves 00:14:35.57\00:14:38.91 the method by which the prophecies may be understood. 00:14:39.14\00:14:44.58 Now you should know at the outset that there are three 00:14:45.48\00:14:48.22 main ways of looking at Bible prophecy. 00:14:48.35\00:14:51.69 There is what is called the Preterist approach to Daniel 00:14:51.92\00:14:54.76 and Revelation. And that word simply means past. 00:14:54.79\00:14:58.49 Preter means past. So when you hear of the Preterist approach 00:14:58.73\00:15:03.06 it simply means that the prophecies of Daniel 00:15:03.20\00:15:06.43 and Revelation are largely for the most part interpreted 00:15:06.47\00:15:09.90 as having been fulfilled when do you think? 00:15:10.04\00:15:13.11 In the past... mostly with the Roman Empire in its pagan phase. 00:15:13.24\00:15:17.81 Are you with me so far? 00:15:17.95\00:15:19.15 Preterist means what? Past. 00:15:19.38\00:15:21.85 But then there's another interpretive approach 00:15:22.08\00:15:25.05 and it is called Futurism. 00:15:25.29\00:15:27.89 And of course Futurism looks at the prophecies of Daniel and 00:15:28.02\00:15:31.59 Revelation and for the most part interprets those prophecies 00:15:31.63\00:15:36.83 to be yet fulfilled in the... What do you think? The future. 00:15:36.97\00:15:42.27 Now there's another method of interpretation 00:15:42.50\00:15:46.74 and it's called the Historicist approach. 00:15:46.98\00:15:50.28 What's it called? The Historicist approach. 00:15:50.41\00:15:53.52 Now don't be deceived by this word. 00:15:53.75\00:15:56.38 Historicist is not a word in this technical sense 00:15:56.52\00:16:00.62 that means to convey the idea that it was all 00:16:00.76\00:16:04.46 fulfilled in history. That's the Preterist approach, right? 00:16:04.49\00:16:08.80 The Historicist approach spans 00:16:09.10\00:16:12.83 the entire area of prophetic history. 00:16:12.97\00:16:18.21 It takes in fulfillment of events in history. 00:16:18.44\00:16:23.08 It takes in the fact that we are poised as it were 00:16:23.41\00:16:27.58 on the edge of our seats right now in the present 00:16:27.72\00:16:30.65 awaiting the fulfillment of certain events. 00:16:30.79\00:16:33.05 And it takes into account that there are yet future events 00:16:33.49\00:16:37.13 that have yet to unfold. So the Historicist approach 00:16:37.36\00:16:41.70 straddles the entire span of prophetic history. 00:16:42.03\00:16:48.07 It's not all in the past; it's not all in the future. 00:16:48.20\00:16:51.57 And therefore the Historicist approach is not only 00:16:51.91\00:16:55.24 relevant to history but the Historicist approach 00:16:55.38\00:16:59.48 is the only approach that is inherently calculated 00:16:59.71\00:17:04.92 to give us the proper kind or quality of urgency. 00:17:05.05\00:17:10.96 Because as we're about to discover 00:17:11.19\00:17:13.33 according to the Historicist approach we are... listen very 00:17:13.56\00:17:16.56 carefully... we are on the tail end of the fulfillment 00:17:16.60\00:17:22.34 of every one of the great prophetic lines. 00:17:22.47\00:17:26.64 We are teetering on the edge of eternity 00:17:26.88\00:17:30.55 as we're about to discover. 00:17:30.68\00:17:31.98 Now, the Historicist approach is embedded in the text. 00:17:32.21\00:17:37.15 The Preterist approach and the Futurist approach 00:17:37.49\00:17:40.62 need to be imposed on the text. 00:17:40.76\00:17:44.16 Whereas the Historicist interpretation 00:17:44.39\00:17:47.73 is what is obviously intended in the text itself. 00:17:47.96\00:17:52.97 Turn to Revelation chapter 1. 00:17:53.13\00:17:54.97 Revelation chapter 1... and here we have 00:17:55.20\00:17:59.74 the first vision that John received 00:17:59.87\00:18:03.14 for the book of Revelation. 00:18:04.35\00:18:06.25 And it's important to notice the first vision. 00:18:06.48\00:18:08.98 We tend to run off into the future visions 00:18:09.12\00:18:13.89 of the seven churches, the seven seals, the seven trumpets 00:18:14.02\00:18:17.39 etc. and to overlook the fact 00:18:17.53\00:18:20.30 that there is an introductory vision. 00:18:20.43\00:18:23.37 There is a preliminary vision that constitutes 00:18:23.70\00:18:26.90 the lens if you will... the paradigmatic window... 00:18:27.04\00:18:30.27 the grid through which all the other prophecies 00:18:30.41\00:18:34.24 are to be understood, all right? 00:18:34.28\00:18:36.38 So the first vision is in chapter 1 of Revelation. 00:18:36.61\00:18:41.32 And for the sake of time I'm not going to read all the words. 00:18:41.45\00:18:44.75 You're going to have to be a Bible student with me 00:18:44.79\00:18:46.39 right now because this is a big picture message. 00:18:46.62\00:18:50.59 We're looking at the forest right now, not the individual 00:18:50.83\00:18:53.60 trees. I'm going to turn you to all the texts 00:18:53.63\00:18:56.26 but I'm not going to read long passages to you 00:18:56.30\00:18:58.43 because I want you to do kind of a fly-by with me 00:18:58.57\00:19:01.17 of the prophecies of Revelation. 00:19:01.30\00:19:03.00 I want you to get the aerial view so you get oriented on 00:19:03.14\00:19:06.21 the landscape of prophecy so that you're equipped 00:19:06.34\00:19:10.08 to go back and read the book of Revelation 00:19:10.21\00:19:13.11 with clarity of vision because now you know 00:19:13.25\00:19:16.89 how to read the text, all right? 00:19:17.02\00:19:19.45 So in Revelation chapter 1 we have the first vision. 00:19:19.69\00:19:22.12 It is a vision of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:19:22.36\00:19:26.23 in verses 13 and onward 00:19:26.36\00:19:30.67 and the description picks up in verse 13. 00:19:30.70\00:19:35.57 "And in the midst of the seven lamp stands one like 00:19:35.90\00:19:38.11 the Son of Man. " Notice the language very carefully. 00:19:38.14\00:19:40.64 In verse 13 it says: "He was clothed 00:19:40.98\00:19:43.51 with a garment down to the feet. " 00:19:43.65\00:19:46.72 And then it says in verse 13 that He was "girded about" 00:19:46.85\00:19:49.92 what part of His body? "His chest, " and it was with a 00:19:49.95\00:19:53.96 "golden band" or another version says a golden girdle 00:19:54.19\00:19:58.79 around His chest. Try to visualize Jesus and 00:19:58.93\00:20:02.76 something is going to emerge to our understanding here. 00:20:02.80\00:20:05.47 Clothed with a garment. That is a white garment of linen 00:20:05.60\00:20:09.17 down to the feet. Down to the feet. Girded 00:20:09.20\00:20:13.17 with a golden band. And then notice verse 14: 00:20:13.31\00:20:16.34 "His hair was white like wool, as white as snow 00:20:16.48\00:20:19.08 and His eyes were like... " What everybody? "like fire. " 00:20:19.31\00:20:23.89 This is fascinating. But not only were His eyes like fire. 00:20:24.02\00:20:27.99 Notice in verse 15 that John now moves to His feet. 00:20:28.12\00:20:32.16 And he said that "His feet were like fine brass 00:20:32.49\00:20:36.73 as if burning in a furnace. " 00:20:36.87\00:20:40.47 Brass burning in a furnace. 00:20:40.70\00:20:44.47 "His voice was like many waters. " Verse 16. 00:20:44.71\00:20:47.18 "And He had in His right hand... " specifically... 00:20:47.41\00:20:51.71 "His right hand seven stars. 00:20:51.85\00:20:55.52 And out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword. " 00:20:55.75\00:20:58.62 And notice this: "His countenance... " His face... 00:20:58.75\00:21:01.59 "was like the sun shining in all its strength. " 00:21:02.92\00:21:07.66 I want you to notice that what John has ingeniously done here 00:21:08.16\00:21:12.90 is that he has given us a description of Jesus 00:21:13.03\00:21:18.27 that is filled with Old Testament codes. 00:21:18.71\00:21:22.58 Language is important. It's vitally important for you 00:21:24.51\00:21:27.98 and I to have a language base in order to understand 00:21:28.02\00:21:31.45 the composition of words. 00:21:31.49\00:21:32.79 That's the study of etymology. 00:21:32.82\00:21:34.36 If I say to you for example 00:21:34.69\00:21:36.69 "You're adorkable" you know that what I've done 00:21:36.93\00:21:41.80 is amalgamate two words that you are familiar with 00:21:41.83\00:21:44.70 so you can come up with the definition. 00:21:44.83\00:21:46.94 You know that I've just employed adorable and dork 00:21:47.17\00:21:50.64 which means you're adorable in a dorky kind of way. 00:21:50.67\00:21:53.88 So you can decipher the word based on the etymology. 00:21:54.11\00:21:58.78 You know - right? - that two words have been combined 00:21:59.05\00:22:02.55 to create this new concept. 00:22:02.58\00:22:04.65 If I say to you that the meal that I just had was 00:22:04.99\00:22:07.56 "scrumbilicious" I'm making up a new word 00:22:07.59\00:22:11.89 in order to convey it was scrumptious and delicious. 00:22:12.03\00:22:16.80 That's right. If I say: "My daughter Leah 00:22:17.03\00:22:20.17 is a fantabulous human being 00:22:20.30\00:22:22.97 I'm not content with fabulous... 00:22:23.20\00:22:26.27 she's fantastic AND fabulous. 00:22:26.51\00:22:30.61 So because we have language 00:22:30.85\00:22:33.55 we know how to make sense 00:22:33.78\00:22:35.65 out of the new things that we encounter in language, right? 00:22:35.68\00:22:38.95 Are you with me so far? So the book of Revelation 00:22:39.09\00:22:43.83 assumes Biblical literacy. 00:22:44.03\00:22:47.03 You can't read the book of Revelation in a vacuum. 00:22:47.46\00:22:50.40 It is a book that is composed of Old Testament 00:22:51.33\00:22:55.97 symbols and types. It's a language all its own. 00:22:56.10\00:23:01.34 So John in a very short space 00:23:01.51\00:23:04.35 is describing things - get this - that are referring back. 00:23:04.48\00:23:10.05 Notice what he's describing 00:23:10.49\00:23:12.49 as the first graphic comes on the screen. 00:23:12.62\00:23:15.96 Notice what he's describing. The Old Testament sanctuary 00:23:16.19\00:23:20.20 was composed of a high white linen wall 00:23:20.43\00:23:25.17 for the entire enclosure called the courtyard. Right? 00:23:25.30\00:23:30.64 As you step in through the first gate into the courtyard 00:23:30.81\00:23:34.04 you encounter an altar that was made out of brass 00:23:34.18\00:23:38.88 that had a fire continually burning upon it 00:23:39.01\00:23:42.38 for sacrificial purposes. 00:23:42.52\00:23:44.15 As you step into the holy place you encounter 00:23:44.39\00:23:48.72 seven luminous lamps... 00:23:48.96\00:23:53.40 the candelabra. 00:23:53.63\00:23:55.96 And as you step into the Most Holy Place 00:23:56.00\00:23:59.10 you're crossing a threshold of the third veil. 00:23:59.23\00:24:03.17 The first into the courtyard; the second into the holy place. 00:24:03.30\00:24:06.88 There's a third veil. It's unique. It's interwoven 00:24:07.01\00:24:11.71 with gold. It's the only one. And then in the Most Holy Place 00:24:11.88\00:24:17.85 is the Shekinah glory. 00:24:17.99\00:24:21.36 John says: "I saw Jesus and He was clothed with a garment 00:24:21.49\00:24:25.86 down to the feet. And His feet were like fine brass 00:24:25.99\00:24:30.73 as if they were burning in a furnace. 00:24:30.87\00:24:32.80 And as I looked at Him in His right hand were 7 stars. 00:24:33.03\00:24:37.74 And He was girded about His chest with gold 00:24:38.01\00:24:42.34 and His face was like the sun shining in all its glory. " 00:24:42.71\00:24:48.58 What John has described is the person of Jesus Christ 00:24:49.62\00:24:53.49 and simultaneously He has described the Old Testament 00:24:53.92\00:24:58.36 sanctuary with little trigger points so that the Biblically 00:24:58.49\00:25:02.36 literate person - the person who is familiar with scripture - 00:25:02.40\00:25:05.10 will say: "Oh, we're dealing with sanctuary language 00:25:05.23\00:25:10.61 and terminology as these prophecies unfold before us. " 00:25:10.64\00:25:14.71 It's brilliant, but there's more to it than that 00:25:14.94\00:25:18.61 because not only has John described Jesus as the temple 00:25:18.95\00:25:24.09 Himself, which - parenthetical statement just for a moment 00:25:24.22\00:25:26.86 here - Jesus Himself did the same thing. 00:25:26.89\00:25:28.89 You remember His conversation with the disciples where He said 00:25:29.02\00:25:31.39 "Destroy this temple and in 3 days I'll raise it up. " 00:25:31.73\00:25:34.46 They said: "How can You do that? They've been building this 00:25:34.83\00:25:37.87 temple for years. How can You? " And then what did the text say? 00:25:37.90\00:25:41.40 "He spoke of the temple of His body. " 00:25:41.64\00:25:46.37 Jesus described Himself as the temple of God. 00:25:46.51\00:25:50.58 If you simply do a body overlay 00:25:50.71\00:25:53.98 and transpose it over the sanctuary's aerial view, 00:25:54.02\00:25:57.65 the floor plan, the head would fall in the Most Holy Place 00:25:57.69\00:26:00.82 area and the feet at the altar of brass. 00:26:00.96\00:26:04.29 And the right hand would fall at the 7-branched candlestick 00:26:04.53\00:26:08.33 and the golden band of the veil into the Most Holy Place 00:26:08.46\00:26:13.57 would be at His chest. John has done something amazing here. 00:26:13.70\00:26:16.97 But it's more amazing... because the sanctuary, if you 00:26:17.01\00:26:20.18 could go back to that graphic, the sanctuary is not only 00:26:20.21\00:26:25.08 an illustration of individual Christian experience. 00:26:25.21\00:26:29.58 The sanctuary is an illustration of the entire historic span 00:26:30.02\00:26:36.06 of the plan of salvation. 00:26:36.19\00:26:38.13 It's a historic illustration of the various junctures 00:26:38.46\00:26:44.03 of the plan of salvation. 00:26:44.20\00:26:46.33 Jesus is incarnate. He comes into the world 00:26:46.60\00:26:50.87 and into the courtyard. And the cross of Christ is symbolized 00:26:51.11\00:26:55.98 by this altar of brass. 00:26:56.01\00:26:58.05 Jesus is crucified there. The courtyard represents 00:26:58.38\00:27:02.82 that phase of salvation history that is encompassed 00:27:02.95\00:27:07.09 by the incarnation, life, death, 00:27:07.22\00:27:10.56 and burial and resurrection of Jesus. 00:27:10.59\00:27:12.93 But then Jesus rose again and He ascended on high 00:27:13.16\00:27:17.77 to the right hand of the Father. 00:27:17.90\00:27:19.83 Jesus went into the holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, 00:27:20.07\00:27:24.24 there to continue... there to continue the salvation 00:27:24.37\00:27:28.44 work now in the role of High Priest. 00:27:28.48\00:27:32.08 And then Jesus in 1844... 00:27:33.31\00:27:36.32 we don't have time to demonstrate or prove that, 00:27:36.35\00:27:38.12 that's in another study entirely... this is the aerial 00:27:38.25\00:27:40.52 view, this is the forest - not the trees... 00:27:40.56\00:27:42.86 In 1844 Jesus moved 00:27:43.29\00:27:48.03 into the Most Holy Place phase of the plan of salvation 00:27:48.06\00:27:52.70 preparatory to what we sometimes refer to as the 00:27:52.83\00:27:57.27 final atonement - Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement, 00:27:57.41\00:28:00.31 the Day of Judgment and involv- ing the scapegoat transaction 00:28:00.34\00:28:04.98 where the scapegoat is sent into the wilderness 00:28:05.21\00:28:09.05 to perish for want of sustenance and support 00:28:09.18\00:28:12.29 representing the fact that ultimately 00:28:12.42\00:28:15.19 while Jesus by His sacrifice is the Savior of the world 00:28:15.22\00:28:19.69 Satan will finally bear the responsibility 00:28:19.93\00:28:24.17 for the sin problem as the one who is the originator 00:28:24.40\00:28:29.37 of sin. And the devil will come to the place where he 00:28:29.54\00:28:34.01 is going to perish as it were for want of the support 00:28:34.14\00:28:39.81 that he has had due to the lies he has told regarding 00:28:39.95\00:28:43.55 the character of God. Again, that's a whole "nother" study. 00:28:43.59\00:28:46.45 But simply what has happened is salvation history has 00:28:46.59\00:28:49.99 unfolded forward so that great clarity has been brought 00:28:50.03\00:28:54.76 to the issues in the great controversy, most importantly 00:28:54.93\00:28:58.13 great clarity has been brought regarding the love of God. 00:28:58.27\00:29:02.20 The character of God. The glorious beauty of the 00:29:02.34\00:29:06.17 character of God has been fully exonerated and vindicated 00:29:06.21\00:29:10.68 on the premise of the life, death, burial, and resurrection 00:29:10.81\00:29:15.52 of Christ: the vindicator of God's character. 00:29:15.65\00:29:18.49 And that vindication - when it is preached, when the gospel 00:29:18.72\00:29:22.56 is preached to the world - shifts the sympathies 00:29:22.59\00:29:27.20 of the world in the direction of Christ away from 00:29:27.23\00:29:30.97 the edifice of lies that have been told regarding 00:29:31.00\00:29:33.84 the character of God. And this is where the loud cry 00:29:33.87\00:29:37.07 of the third angel's message, illumines the whole world 00:29:37.11\00:29:40.08 with the glory of God. 00:29:40.11\00:29:41.78 People globally, through the proclamation of the gospel, 00:29:41.91\00:29:45.38 begin to believe a new doctrinal system 00:29:45.51\00:29:49.35 that makes God out to be the beautiful God that He really is. 00:29:49.48\00:29:53.56 And the lies that Satan has propagated through the system 00:29:53.99\00:29:58.23 of Babylon begin to fall for want of believability 00:29:58.26\00:30:02.40 on the premise of the beautiful proclamation of the gospel. 00:30:03.50\00:30:06.94 Now, with that brief background 00:30:07.07\00:30:10.61 Revelation chapter 1 has told us 00:30:10.84\00:30:13.21 that what we're about to encounter in the prophecies of 00:30:13.54\00:30:17.38 Revelation is a series of prophecies that take in 00:30:17.41\00:30:22.52 a span of time beginning with Christ 00:30:22.55\00:30:27.42 and His death at the cross: 00:30:27.46\00:30:28.69 His life, death, burial and resurrection. 00:30:28.72\00:30:30.83 This is the grounded point of the prophecy. 00:30:31.36\00:30:36.63 This is the starting point of the prophecy: 00:30:36.67\00:30:39.33 the apostolic period. All of the prophecies that follow 00:30:39.47\00:30:43.67 are intended to give us a repeat and enlarge picture 00:30:43.81\00:30:48.88 of events that will transpire from the time of Christ and the 00:30:48.91\00:30:52.11 apostles straight on through the courtyard phase, 00:30:52.15\00:30:56.22 the holy place into the Most Holy Place. 00:30:56.25\00:30:58.52 Final atonement, the shifting of the weight of 00:30:58.65\00:31:01.42 responsibility onto Satan, the vindication of God's character, 00:31:01.46\00:31:04.79 the end of the great controversy and the second advent. 00:31:04.93\00:31:07.40 This is the span of history covered. 00:31:07.73\00:31:10.03 Now with that in mind, let's do a brief overview 00:31:10.27\00:31:15.20 of the prophecies that unfold at this point 00:31:15.34\00:31:18.24 in order to grasp the Historicist pattern 00:31:18.77\00:31:22.94 that follows the sanctuary out- line of the vision in chapter 1. 00:31:23.08\00:31:26.45 First of all, in chapters 3 through 5 of Revelation 00:31:26.68\00:31:29.68 we have the first prophecy that covers the prophetic span. 00:31:29.82\00:31:34.79 Of course, Revelation 1 is the first prophecy 00:31:34.92\00:31:37.06 that's introductory in setting course for us 00:31:37.19\00:31:40.63 as we've just established. 00:31:40.76\00:31:41.93 But Revelation 3 through 5 is the seven churches 00:31:42.16\00:31:47.17 prophecy. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7... 00:31:47.30\00:31:51.14 they cover a span of history. 00:31:51.27\00:31:53.07 Ephesus, the first church, is the apostolic age. 00:31:53.41\00:31:57.05 And as church history unfolds forward 00:31:57.48\00:32:01.78 we come to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... 00:32:01.92\00:32:05.39 Now watch this carefully: 00:32:05.52\00:32:07.16 When we come to the 6th church 00:32:07.29\00:32:09.09 which is the church of Philadelphia 00:32:09.12\00:32:11.46 we have very fascinating language that ought to be 00:32:11.69\00:32:15.06 familiar to us at this point 00:32:15.10\00:32:16.77 that is invoked for the interpretation. 00:32:16.90\00:32:19.67 In chapter 3 of Revelation 00:32:20.00\00:32:22.70 in the Philadelphia period - that is, in the 6th church... 00:32:22.74\00:32:26.47 the little hinge period between churches 6 and 7- 00:32:26.61\00:32:30.15 seven being Laodicea preparatory to the 2nd coming - 00:32:30.28\00:32:33.55 Watch this: when we come to the 6th church 00:32:33.68\00:32:36.28 suddenly John is told: "Behold I have set before you 00:32:36.52\00:32:41.42 an open door and no man can shut it. " 00:32:41.66\00:32:47.30 What is this language? 00:32:47.73\00:32:49.33 Suddenly we're face to face with a door... a passageway. 00:32:49.56\00:32:53.34 Now it is an experiential door, and experiential passageway, 00:32:53.57\00:32:58.64 that we can apply to our individual Christian experience 00:32:58.87\00:33:02.48 but it's a historic transition. 00:33:02.61\00:33:05.71 During the Philadelphia period, "Behold I have set before you 00:33:06.15\00:33:09.02 an open door" specifically refers to the door into the 00:33:09.05\00:33:12.79 Most Holy Place. This is telling us that at this 00:33:12.82\00:33:16.86 particular juncture of prophetic history 00:33:16.99\00:33:19.56 a great transition is going to occur. 00:33:19.73\00:33:22.23 Jesus is going to move from the holy place phase of His 00:33:22.46\00:33:26.87 High Priestly ministry into the Most Holy Place phase. 00:33:26.90\00:33:31.77 So... Most Holy Place language is invoked 00:33:32.14\00:33:37.01 for us to understand where we are in the span 00:33:37.25\00:33:41.28 of prophetic history. 00:33:41.32\00:33:42.78 Then we come to the prophecy of the seven seals. 00:33:42.92\00:33:45.62 Seven churches... seven seals. 00:33:45.75\00:33:48.16 As the seven seals prophecy unfolds in chapters 6 through 8 00:33:48.39\00:33:52.29 please notice with me that again 00:33:52.53\00:33:56.36 we're grounded in history with the 1st seal referring to 00:33:56.50\00:34:00.10 political events that are transpiring in the larger world 00:34:00.24\00:34:05.71 whereas the first vision of the seven churches 00:34:05.84\00:34:09.18 is specifically interested in what's going on among God's 00:34:09.31\00:34:12.75 people within the church. 00:34:12.78\00:34:15.02 When we come to the seven seals we've got a repeat and enlarge 00:34:15.25\00:34:19.25 principle that we're encountering. 00:34:19.29\00:34:21.06 It's as if God is saying: "OK, I've just moved you from 00:34:21.29\00:34:24.86 the first church down through time... apostolic period down 00:34:24.99\00:34:28.36 to the 7th church preparatory to the 2nd coming. 00:34:28.50\00:34:31.30 OK... you got that? " 00:34:31.43\00:34:32.90 We say: "Yes, Lord. " 00:34:33.03\00:34:34.34 He says: "Now back up with Me 00:34:34.47\00:34:35.97 and I'm going to give you another vision that's going to 00:34:36.20\00:34:39.14 emphasize different events that are running concurrent... 00:34:39.17\00:34:43.28 simultaneous to the unfolding of this same span of history. " 00:34:43.41\00:34:47.75 I want to emphasize same span of history. 00:34:47.88\00:34:52.02 So the seven seals unfold forward until we come 00:34:52.25\00:34:57.33 to the 6th and 7th seal. And again we find 00:34:57.56\00:35:02.33 that sanctuary language is suddenly invoked again. 00:35:02.46\00:35:06.07 When we come to chapter 8 and verses 1 through 4... 00:35:06.30\00:35:10.57 fascinating... suddenly we have a golden censer 00:35:10.71\00:35:15.28 that is filled with incense which the prophet tells us 00:35:15.51\00:35:19.68 constitutes the prayers of the saints mingled with that incense 00:35:19.91\00:35:23.49 which is the righteousness of Christ which makes our 00:35:23.62\00:35:26.35 prayers acceptable before God. 00:35:26.39\00:35:29.29 So what is the censer? Just as the door that is invoked 00:35:29.72\00:35:34.93 at the end of the seven churches prophecy 00:35:35.03\00:35:38.13 brings our minds to the Most Holy Place - 00:35:38.27\00:35:41.27 to that veil into the Most Holy Place - 00:35:41.50\00:35:43.57 the censer belongs to what part of the sanctuary? 00:35:43.81\00:35:47.68 The Most Holy Place. 00:35:48.84\00:35:50.28 The censer belongs to the Most Holy Place. 00:35:50.61\00:35:53.62 The priest on the Day of Atonement - 00:35:53.75\00:35:56.22 post 1844 in the anti-type... 00:35:56.35\00:35:58.92 The priest takes some of the incense off of the altar 00:35:59.35\00:36:02.12 of incense in the holy place, right? 00:36:02.16\00:36:05.26 Puts it in the censer and then goes into the Most Holy Place 00:36:05.43\00:36:08.96 on the Day of Atonement, waving the censer to fill it 00:36:09.10\00:36:10.97 with smoke. There's practical purpose for this, by the way, 00:36:11.00\00:36:13.94 that Isaiah chapter 6 points out to us, and that is 00:36:13.97\00:36:17.01 that the Shekinah glory is there, so the priest is filling 00:36:17.04\00:36:19.67 the Most Holy Place with smoke in order to dim the glory 00:36:19.71\00:36:23.28 of God's presence so that he can endure 00:36:23.41\00:36:26.88 moving through the Day of Atonement ceremony 00:36:27.02\00:36:29.55 and not be destroyed. Josephus tells us - 00:36:29.68\00:36:32.42 and this is extra-Biblical - Josephus tells us 00:36:32.55\00:36:35.76 that they also tied a rope around brother high priest's 00:36:35.99\00:36:38.86 ankle and let him feed his way in there 00:36:38.99\00:36:43.43 and they're listening for the bells that were at the bottom 00:36:43.67\00:36:46.57 of his garment. As long as you hear those bells 00:36:46.60\00:36:49.20 you know everything is cool. 00:36:49.34\00:36:51.21 But then all of a sudden... no bells. 00:36:51.34\00:36:54.84 "Let's wait a little longer. " Still no bells. 00:36:55.18\00:36:57.71 "Let's wait a little longer. " No bells. "I say we pull. " 00:36:57.95\00:37:00.68 They pull the rope and out comes the high priest. 00:37:00.92\00:37:04.39 This was the holy presence of God 00:37:04.62\00:37:07.99 that required a certain preparedness 00:37:08.22\00:37:12.16 to endure. So we see that at the seven seals prophecy 00:37:13.40\00:37:18.27 as we come to the conclusion of the seven seals 00:37:18.40\00:37:22.60 that hinge point between number six and number seven. 00:37:22.84\00:37:27.68 Again, Most Holy Place language is invoked. Why? 00:37:27.81\00:37:31.41 To orient us. Remember we're dealing with a language here. 00:37:31.75\00:37:36.79 We're dealing with sanctuary language. 00:37:37.32\00:37:39.62 The first vision prepared us by teaching us the language. 00:37:39.75\00:37:44.83 The first vision referred us back to the sanctuary 00:37:44.99\00:37:48.16 and with that language now continually we are oriented. 00:37:48.20\00:37:52.43 Where are we in the span of prophetic time? 00:37:52.57\00:37:55.27 We're again between the sixth and the seventh seal. 00:37:55.40\00:37:58.81 We're at that phase of salvation history 00:37:58.94\00:38:01.48 represented by the Most Holy Place. 00:38:01.61\00:38:03.21 Post 1844 just prior to the second coming of Christ. 00:38:03.35\00:38:07.38 OK... watch the pattern continue. 00:38:07.62\00:38:10.25 We come then to the seven trumpets prophecy 00:38:10.49\00:38:14.12 of Revelation in chapters 8 through 11. 00:38:14.46\00:38:18.76 As the seven trumpets prophecy unfolds, again 00:38:19.09\00:38:23.06 First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth trumpet. 00:38:23.30\00:38:27.94 And when we come to the seventh trumpet 00:38:28.07\00:38:31.77 look at the language in chapter 11 verse 19 of 00:38:31.91\00:38:35.58 Revelation. Chapter 11 and verse 19 of Revelation. 00:38:35.61\00:38:40.28 We're now at the 7th trumpet - 00:38:44.95\00:38:47.66 in the period related to the seventh trumpet - 00:38:48.76\00:38:52.56 verse 19 of chapter 11 of Revelation: 00:38:52.73\00:38:55.10 "Then the temple of God was opened in heaven 00:38:55.43\00:38:59.37 and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. 00:38:59.50\00:39:03.47 And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings 00:39:03.91\00:39:09.44 an earthquake and great hail. " 00:39:09.58\00:39:12.01 What is this ark? And where does it belong 00:39:12.15\00:39:15.48 in your Biblical orientation? 00:39:15.62\00:39:18.15 Where does it belong? The Most Holy Place. 00:39:18.29\00:39:21.79 So the ark that belongs to the Most Holy Place 00:39:22.22\00:39:25.89 is now brought to our attention 00:39:26.13\00:39:28.90 during that period represented by the seventh trumpet. 00:39:29.23\00:39:34.40 Fascinating! What we see here is a pattern of language 00:39:34.54\00:39:38.67 in which the prophet over and over again is saying 00:39:38.81\00:39:41.68 We begin here - apostolic age, the time of Christ. 00:39:41.81\00:39:44.45 The Christ event in it's totality: death, burial, 00:39:44.58\00:39:47.95 resurrection. The entire Christ event is the launching point, 00:39:47.98\00:39:52.59 the anchor, the beginning of the prophecy. 00:39:52.62\00:39:55.22 Seven churches unfold. Boom! 00:39:55.36\00:39:57.79 Most Holy Place language is triggered 00:39:57.93\00:40:00.50 in the sixth church. 00:40:00.73\00:40:04.17 He backs up... seven seals. Most Holy Place language 00:40:04.40\00:40:08.80 is invoked again at the end of the sixth seal. 00:40:09.14\00:40:15.14 Seven trumpets? Back up. Again, repeat and enlarge 00:40:15.38\00:40:19.18 dealing with other events that are running simultaneous to 00:40:19.51\00:40:23.72 this same period of time. 00:40:23.85\00:40:26.12 And as they back up and begin to move forward 00:40:26.35\00:40:29.49 what happens again? 00:40:29.62\00:40:30.96 We come to the end of the seven trumpets prophecy 00:40:31.19\00:40:33.96 and John very consistently again invokes Most Holy Place 00:40:34.10\00:40:39.10 furniture, Most Holy Place language. 00:40:39.23\00:40:42.20 Again we're oriented. We know where we are in time. 00:40:42.44\00:40:46.78 This next vision, and this is extremely important to grasp 00:40:46.94\00:40:50.31 this next point, is what we're going to refer to as 00:40:50.35\00:40:53.28 "the cosmic war vision. " Chapters 12 through 14. 00:40:53.42\00:40:58.82 You remember chapter 12 begins in verse 1 where John 00:40:59.92\00:41:04.09 sees a woman clothed with the sun with the moon under her feet 00:41:04.23\00:41:08.76 with a garland of 12 stars on her head, right? 00:41:08.90\00:41:13.00 And as the vision unfolds we realize that this woman 00:41:13.34\00:41:17.11 is about to give birth to a Man Child. 00:41:17.14\00:41:20.31 And we understand in the Historicist interpretation 00:41:20.74\00:41:24.88 that this Man Child to be born to the woman - 00:41:25.11\00:41:27.88 that is, born to Israel and born to the church 00:41:27.92\00:41:31.69 at that critical juncture of transition 00:41:31.82\00:41:34.19 between Old Testament Israel, New Testament Israel - 00:41:34.32\00:41:37.59 at that critical juncture Israel which is the posterity 00:41:37.73\00:41:42.43 through which Messiah was to come 00:41:42.56\00:41:44.47 Jesus is born to the world through an Abrahamic lineage. 00:41:46.03\00:41:51.01 He comes into the world and the prophecy unfolds and tells us 00:41:51.24\00:41:54.98 there was an attempt on His life. 00:41:55.11\00:41:56.75 We corroborate the evidence in the gospels and find out 00:41:57.08\00:42:00.05 that it was Herod that made the attempt on the baby Jesus' life. 00:42:00.15\00:42:04.09 Right? This is all in Revelation 12. 00:42:04.32\00:42:06.55 Revelation 12 brings us right up to the cross 00:42:06.89\00:42:09.59 and tells us in verses 7-9 that there was war in heaven. 00:42:09.72\00:42:12.99 That Michael and His angels fought and the devil and his 00:42:13.33\00:42:16.10 angels fought and prevailed not. Neither was a place found 00:42:16.13\00:42:19.23 for them any more in heaven. 00:42:19.27\00:42:20.94 And the devil was cast out. 00:42:21.27\00:42:23.30 And that entire segment of the prophecy - 00:42:23.54\00:42:26.91 this is remarkable... John is doing something amazing - 00:42:27.24\00:42:30.28 he is giving us a picture of the great controversy 00:42:30.61\00:42:34.25 as it began in heaven with Lucifer's rebellion 00:42:34.38\00:42:38.32 and simultaneously he's taking us to the cross 00:42:38.55\00:42:41.49 where Jesus conquers the devil in principle 00:42:41.82\00:42:46.39 by revealing the unparalleled love of God 00:42:46.53\00:42:50.73 at Calvary so that Jesus could say in John chapter 12 00:42:50.87\00:42:54.97 "I beheld Satan fall like lightning from heaven 00:42:55.30\00:43:00.74 and I, when I am lifted up, will draw all back to Me... 00:43:00.88\00:43:06.05 all peoples to Me. " 00:43:06.18\00:43:08.08 What is Jesus explaining? 00:43:08.22\00:43:09.68 He's saying that "When I die on the cross there will be 00:43:10.02\00:43:13.09 such a brilliant and beautiful revelation 00:43:13.12\00:43:17.26 of the character of God in this unprecedented 00:43:17.39\00:43:21.00 selfless love for you that everyone who sees it 00:43:21.13\00:43:25.17 two things will happen for them: 00:43:25.30\00:43:27.07 Satan will lose credibility in their theological paradigm, 00:43:27.30\00:43:31.67 in their emotional experience, 00:43:31.81\00:43:33.78 in their entire life experience Satan will lose credibility. 00:43:33.91\00:43:37.58 He will fall as it were from heavenly sympathies 00:43:37.81\00:43:41.58 and from human sympathies by the revelation of God's love 00:43:41.72\00:43:44.62 at the cross. " But not only that, not only will Satan fall 00:43:44.65\00:43:48.79 but Jesus said: "And everybody who sees Me 00:43:48.92\00:43:51.49 dying on the cross will be drawn back to Me. " 00:43:51.63\00:43:54.73 That's the vindication principle. 00:43:54.76\00:43:56.46 This is where Jesus is giving a revelation of the character 00:43:56.80\00:43:59.87 of God that is unprecedented in all of universal history 00:43:59.90\00:44:03.57 and persuades intelligent, sentient, free-will creatures 00:44:03.81\00:44:09.31 that God is love in the most extreme and beautiful sense 00:44:09.44\00:44:12.71 imaginable. This brings the hearts of free-will creatures 00:44:12.75\00:44:17.02 to a voluntary worship of God. 00:44:17.15\00:44:19.75 Not under compulsion. No coercion. 00:44:19.92\00:44:22.39 No force; no manipulation. 00:44:22.52\00:44:24.36 We simply see the beauty of God's character 00:44:24.49\00:44:27.30 and voluntarily we begin to gravitate toward Him. 00:44:27.56\00:44:30.83 That's the power of Calvary. 00:44:31.17\00:44:33.34 And as the prophecy of the cosmic war unfolds... 00:44:33.77\00:44:38.14 Watch this... go to Revelation 12 now... 00:44:38.17\00:44:40.31 Revelation chapter 12. 00:44:40.54\00:44:42.44 The whole history unfolds. We have the church in the 00:44:43.21\00:44:46.21 wilderness during the 1,260-year period 00:44:46.25\00:44:48.58 brought to view from 538 AD to 1798 AD. 00:44:48.82\00:44:52.52 That's all in chapter 12 of Revelation. 00:44:52.65\00:44:54.36 But then watch this as we come again following the same 00:44:54.59\00:44:58.66 pattern, the same trajectory, we come to Revelation chapter 12 00:44:58.79\00:45:02.60 to the last verse. We have moved from the birth of Jesus 00:45:02.73\00:45:07.17 in the earlier verses of chapter 12, 00:45:08.27\00:45:10.61 the attempt on His life, the church going into the wilderness 00:45:10.74\00:45:14.88 during a persecution period, 00:45:15.01\00:45:17.18 and now we have a people emerging post 1844... 00:45:17.31\00:45:22.35 and here's how they're described. Verse 17: 00:45:22.48\00:45:25.55 "And the dragon was enraged... " He was wroth 00:45:25.72\00:45:28.36 the King James says... "with the woman and went to make war 00:45:28.49\00:45:32.99 with the remnant of her seed... " 00:45:33.13\00:45:37.00 Now notice this: "who keep the... " What? 00:45:37.13\00:45:39.77 "the commandments of God and have the... " What? 00:45:39.90\00:45:41.87 "the testimony of Jesus. " Again, where are you 00:45:42.10\00:45:44.87 on the landscape of history? 00:45:44.91\00:45:46.68 The law of God, the tables of stone, the Ten Commandments 00:45:47.11\00:45:50.25 pertain to what part of the sanctuary? 00:45:50.48\00:45:54.78 Are they out in the courtyard 00:45:54.92\00:45:56.65 tucked under the altar of brass? 00:45:56.79\00:45:58.65 No! They're in the Most Holy Place in the ark. 00:45:58.89\00:46:02.16 Do you remember where we were in the seven trumpets 00:46:02.42\00:46:05.76 as we came to the seventh? 00:46:05.79\00:46:07.30 "I saw the heavens opened 00:46:07.86\00:46:10.60 and the ark of His testament was seen in His temple. " 00:46:10.93\00:46:16.17 So the seven trumpets end and you're right there in the 00:46:16.40\00:46:18.51 Most Holy Place... Now watch this: 00:46:18.54\00:46:20.21 when you come to the end of the cosmic war vision 00:46:20.34\00:46:22.61 the law of God which has been in the ark - 00:46:22.64\00:46:26.05 right? - is now invoked as the Most Holy Place 00:46:26.18\00:46:30.29 symbol because John is following a pattern here. 00:46:30.42\00:46:32.45 A beautiful, beautiful artistic pattern 00:46:32.59\00:46:35.19 of communication. If you didn't use this symbolism 00:46:35.32\00:46:38.03 you'd have to have entire volumes to explain 00:46:38.16\00:46:41.00 what John is trying to give us here 00:46:41.03\00:46:42.60 in a series of trigger points of symbols. 00:46:42.83\00:46:44.77 It's brilliant! 00:46:44.90\00:46:46.37 And as we come to the end of the cosmic war vision, 00:46:46.50\00:46:50.07 wait a minute... Now the law, the Ten Commandments, 00:46:50.21\00:46:53.27 which are associated with the ark in the Most Holy Place 00:46:53.51\00:46:57.55 now that law shows up... watch this... 00:46:57.78\00:47:00.72 in the experience of a people. 00:47:00.85\00:47:05.55 Now you have the new covenant 00:47:05.69\00:47:09.19 of the law of God being written in the heart and in the mind 00:47:09.32\00:47:12.99 taking place. And this is perfectly logical. 00:47:13.13\00:47:15.36 in the trajectory that John has unfolded for us. 00:47:15.60\00:47:18.23 Because earlier in the cosmic war vision 00:47:19.03\00:47:21.74 what is the centerpiece of focus? 00:47:21.87\00:47:23.87 Jesus Christ incarnate and crucified. 00:47:24.11\00:47:27.71 That event 00:47:28.08\00:47:31.05 of the incarnation and crucifixion of Christ 00:47:31.18\00:47:34.62 constitutes precisely the revelation of God's love 00:47:34.85\00:47:40.19 that leads and escorts God's people into a new covenant 00:47:41.12\00:47:44.26 experience where the law of God is not externally imposed... 00:47:44.29\00:47:48.13 it's internally realized. 00:47:48.26\00:47:50.47 In other words, the law of God which symbolically is in the ark 00:47:50.60\00:47:54.80 that was all symbolic. 00:47:54.94\00:47:56.74 God's not interested in golden boxes and tables of stone. 00:47:57.07\00:48:00.51 That's all symbolic. That's all pointing to something else. 00:48:01.51\00:48:05.08 The Most Holy Place, the ark, the law 00:48:05.21\00:48:09.72 ultimately is to represent the human heart and mind 00:48:09.85\00:48:14.52 and the re-establishment of the Shekinah glory 00:48:14.69\00:48:17.69 in the soul temple, in the citadel of the human heart 00:48:17.83\00:48:21.30 and mind. Not in a room that is being carted around the desert 00:48:21.33\00:48:26.20 thousands of years ago. 00:48:26.43\00:48:28.87 That was all... THAT was pointing to THIS! 00:48:29.10\00:48:32.17 That was pointing to realities that God wants to achieve 00:48:32.41\00:48:36.64 in your heart and mine. 00:48:36.78\00:48:38.58 Writing His law of love in the inner fabric... 00:48:38.91\00:48:44.72 the tender inner fabric of human thoughts and feelings. 00:48:44.85\00:48:48.89 Bringing you and me to the point where Ellen White describes 00:48:49.32\00:48:51.99 the experience of this people when she says: 00:48:52.13\00:48:54.86 "When the impulse to help and bless others 00:48:55.20\00:49:00.50 springs constantly from within 00:49:00.64\00:49:03.74 then God's purpose for us is accomplished. " 00:49:03.87\00:49:06.68 In other words, the law of God is not an external code 00:49:07.01\00:49:11.08 to be imposed with manipulation and pressure 00:49:11.31\00:49:15.25 for outward compliance. The law of God is to be 00:49:15.38\00:49:18.29 inscribed in our very thought processes, 00:49:18.42\00:49:21.12 in our emotional make-up. It's to be written in our hearts 00:49:21.36\00:49:24.63 so that we are pleased to live in obedience to God's law. 00:49:24.76\00:49:30.07 Not because we have to but because we want to 00:49:30.20\00:49:33.23 because His law is in our hearts. 00:49:33.37\00:49:36.37 Now what we've seen here is the unfolding of a series 00:49:36.60\00:49:40.28 of prophetic historic periods of time. 00:49:40.31\00:49:45.05 And as this historic period is unfolded with a 00:49:45.28\00:49:50.29 repeat and enlarge dexterity... just back and forth, 00:49:50.42\00:49:53.69 back and forth replay. OK... here we are again. 00:49:53.82\00:49:56.09 OK, and this happening too and so is this. 00:49:56.22\00:49:58.53 We need to understand something: that we are living 00:49:58.66\00:50:02.66 at the very end - the fulcrum point - 00:50:02.80\00:50:07.64 of eternity on all of these prophetic lines. 00:50:07.87\00:50:11.54 I said to you earlier that there are 3 prophetic views 00:50:12.67\00:50:17.41 of interpretation. The Preterist view which 00:50:17.55\00:50:19.78 applies it all to the? 00:50:19.81\00:50:21.45 The Futurist view which puts it all in the? 00:50:21.78\00:50:23.99 The Historicist view that encompasses both the past and 00:50:24.32\00:50:28.59 the future... present as well. 00:50:28.72\00:50:30.96 But there's a fourth view that is totally unique to Adventists. 00:50:30.99\00:50:34.00 We made it up all by ourselves. 00:50:35.43\00:50:37.63 And the way we made it up is because and rightfully so 00:50:40.24\00:50:44.87 we're urgent for the time. No disrespect is meant. 00:50:45.01\00:50:48.41 But what we've done is we have looked at the prophecies 00:50:48.74\00:50:51.95 and we have lost our bearings on the Historicist plane 00:50:52.08\00:50:57.75 and we have begun to develop a hunger and a thirst 00:50:57.89\00:51:02.39 for what is being called "re-applications" 00:51:02.82\00:51:06.76 of these prophecies to the future. 00:51:06.90\00:51:09.46 And I'll tell you what the problem with that is 00:51:10.57\00:51:12.60 if it hasn't already dawned on you. It should just be clicking. 00:51:13.03\00:51:15.74 The Historicist interpretation 00:51:16.17\00:51:19.71 is the official established Adventist view. 00:51:19.84\00:51:23.55 Up until just not more than about 120 years ago it was 00:51:23.68\00:51:26.95 the official Protestant view. 00:51:27.08\00:51:28.72 Preterism and Futurism is a rather new phenomenon 00:51:28.85\00:51:32.79 in church history. These views were concocted, 00:51:32.82\00:51:37.83 both of them, by Jesuit priests in order to get the heat off 00:51:37.86\00:51:40.70 of the papacy in the Historicist interpretation. 00:51:40.73\00:51:43.87 I don't have time to say more about that. 00:51:44.00\00:51:46.13 But Adventists who are grounded historically in the 00:51:46.67\00:51:51.17 Historicist view of prophecy 00:51:51.21\00:51:52.74 not content to realize the urgency of the fact that we're 00:51:53.11\00:51:56.85 living right there between 6 and 7 and the world is about 00:51:56.88\00:52:00.08 to end, we've begun to back up and say: "Hey, let's take those 00:52:00.12\00:52:05.09 seven seals and put them in the future. 00:52:05.12\00:52:06.79 Let's take those seven trumpets and come up with a future 00:52:07.12\00:52:10.89 application. " Even "Let's take the time prophecies 00:52:10.93\00:52:14.00 of the 1,260-year prophecy of Daniel, the 1,290-year prophecy, 00:52:14.13\00:52:18.23 the 1,335-day prophecy and even the 2,300-day prophecy 00:52:18.27\00:52:21.94 and let's just find literal applications 00:52:22.07\00:52:25.47 that we can have here and now. 00:52:25.61\00:52:27.71 At the end of time we need new applications; 00:52:27.84\00:52:31.38 we need re-application. " This view - this fourth view 00:52:31.51\00:52:34.55 that is unique to Adventists - 00:52:34.68\00:52:36.08 is an effort to hold on to the Historicist view 00:52:36.22\00:52:39.12 'cause we feel like we need to, we have to 00:52:39.25\00:52:41.46 for a couple of reasons. One is because it's embedded 00:52:41.59\00:52:43.73 in the text. Number two, there would be no Adventism 00:52:43.76\00:52:46.23 without the Historicist view. The church would not have 00:52:46.26\00:52:49.10 emerged on the scene of human history 00:52:49.13\00:52:51.03 without the Historicist view of prophecy. 00:52:51.07\00:52:53.90 Number three, Ellen White very firmly 00:52:54.14\00:52:56.87 adheres to and articulates the Historicist view. 00:52:57.21\00:53:00.34 So we feel like we have to maintain the Historicist view. 00:53:00.58\00:53:03.28 So rather than be bold enough to just reject it 00:53:04.28\00:53:06.92 and say: "that's not true" which some have. 00:53:07.08\00:53:08.82 But they eventually just leave the church all together. 00:53:09.05\00:53:10.99 Rather than just say: "That's not true! 00:53:11.02\00:53:13.42 This is the true application. Seven seals, seven trumpets... 00:53:13.56\00:53:17.06 all this. It goes here at the end of time. " 00:53:17.09\00:53:18.66 Rather than have that boldness, language has been 00:53:18.79\00:53:22.30 devised and brought to bear upon it 00:53:22.43\00:53:25.60 to say: "We're going to re- apply. It's a re-application 00:53:25.73\00:53:29.94 of these. " "Oh, we affirm this - 00:53:30.07\00:53:32.94 the Historicist view. We're just giving a second application, 00:53:33.07\00:53:36.21 a dual application, a repeat application. " 00:53:36.24\00:53:39.45 But here's the problem. Here's the problem in the 00:53:39.58\00:53:41.15 3 minutes and 48 seconds that I have... 00:53:41.18\00:53:42.98 Here's the problem: 00:53:43.32\00:53:44.89 The Historicist view... listen carefully now... 00:53:46.22\00:53:49.56 already accounts for the entire span 00:53:49.89\00:53:55.53 of the historical prophetic timeline. 00:53:55.76\00:54:00.07 In other words, we're already between 00:54:01.30\00:54:06.47 six and seven on churches, seals, and trumpets. 00:54:06.61\00:54:10.28 To pick up the historically-fulfilled parts 00:54:10.61\00:54:13.92 back up and pull it all into the future 00:54:14.05\00:54:16.58 would give us an absolute nightmare 00:54:16.92\00:54:21.46 of interpretive logic that can't be sustained. 00:54:21.59\00:54:24.19 Because now to affirm Historicism 00:54:24.33\00:54:27.96 and to come up with new future applications 00:54:28.20\00:54:30.90 is simply to say that we have to unravel the idea 00:54:31.03\00:54:34.34 that we have a new seven seals, a new seven trumpets 00:54:34.47\00:54:38.07 that are unfolding during the Historicist unfolding 00:54:38.21\00:54:41.18 of number six and seven. 00:54:41.21\00:54:42.34 So number six and seven are being fulfilled 00:54:43.14\00:54:45.38 but now we have an overlay of the entire seven. 00:54:45.51\00:54:48.68 So in the interpretive logic 00:54:50.05\00:54:53.39 it's very confusing... it doesn't exist. 00:54:53.52\00:54:55.76 In other words, we don't need a re-application 00:54:55.99\00:55:01.36 of the seals, the trumpets, or the time prophecies. Why? 00:55:01.50\00:55:04.37 Why? Is it logical? Do you see it? 00:55:04.50\00:55:06.40 Why do we not need a reinterpretation for the future? 00:55:06.57\00:55:12.17 Because the Historicist interpretation already accounts 00:55:12.34\00:55:16.54 for the future inherent in its hermeneutic logic. 00:55:16.78\00:55:22.72 There's no reason to have another application. 00:55:22.85\00:55:26.45 But here's the bottom line: 00:55:26.89\00:55:29.39 it's not all about Preterism, Futurism, Historicism, 00:55:29.62\00:55:32.06 and re-application. Can't help but want to end with good news. 00:55:32.19\00:55:35.16 Every single prophecy invokes the Most Holy Place 00:55:35.73\00:55:39.30 at the end in Revelation. 00:55:39.43\00:55:40.97 Watch this. You come to the end of the book of Revelation 00:55:41.10\00:55:43.77 and with beautiful language, unimaginably beautiful language, 00:55:44.01\00:55:48.54 John says: "I saw a holy city, New Jerusalem, 00:55:48.71\00:55:51.48 and the angel that attended me told me 00:55:51.71\00:55:54.82 it's measurements. " And as the angel describes the measurements 00:55:54.95\00:55:59.45 of the Holy City... check this out... he's described 00:55:59.59\00:56:04.19 a geometric cube. There's only one other cube 00:56:04.33\00:56:08.93 in the Bible. It's the Most Holy Place 00:56:09.06\00:56:11.60 of the Old Testament sanctuary. 00:56:11.73\00:56:13.37 You have a small cube where the Shekinah glory was 00:56:13.80\00:56:17.11 and then you have the big cube which is the cubed city 00:56:17.34\00:56:20.81 if you will... the New Jerusalem. 00:56:20.84\00:56:22.74 And the whole story comes to a beautiful, artistic 00:56:22.98\00:56:27.12 resolving logic with God's people all finding themselves 00:56:27.15\00:56:32.32 in the New Jerusalem 00:56:32.65\00:56:36.09 and Revelation ends by telling us: "Now God 00:56:36.32\00:56:39.56 is with His people. They're with Him. 00:56:39.79\00:56:43.73 There's no need for a temple any more. 00:56:43.87\00:56:45.87 There's no need for the light of the sun 00:56:46.10\00:56:48.30 for the Lord God is the light. " 00:56:48.54\00:56:50.61 And we are forever in intimate Most Holy Place 00:56:50.64\00:56:55.08 communion with the most beautiful person in all the 00:56:55.21\00:56:58.18 universe: God Almighty Himself. 00:56:58.21\00:57:01.48 And as we take rest and joy and peace 00:57:01.72\00:57:05.42 in that eternal fellowship we realize at that point 00:57:05.65\00:57:10.39 that all along it was about the restoration 00:57:10.73\00:57:14.56 of this communion with God. 00:57:14.83\00:57:17.37 All the details of the prophetic lines were 00:57:17.70\00:57:21.10 all along pointing to this ultimate end 00:57:21.24\00:57:25.34 the Shekinah glory and you and I face to face. 00:57:25.57\00:57:29.58 Please pray with me. Father in heaven, 00:57:29.81\00:57:31.88 thank you for the clarity of Your Word. 00:57:32.11\00:57:34.82 May we hold fast to what this Word has conveyed to us. 00:57:34.95\00:57:40.12 Please, Lord, help us to re-discover the beauty 00:57:40.56\00:57:44.16 and power of the Historicist view of prophecy 00:57:44.19\00:57:46.56 and the inherent logic that it holds 00:57:46.70\00:57:51.30 to tell us where we are in the stream of time. 00:57:51.43\00:57:54.24 In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:57:54.37\00:57:57.64
