Amen! 00:01:19.51\00:01:22.39 We are talking about the second coming. 00:01:22.79\00:01:25.28 The day will come when you could be driving down the road, 00:01:25.58\00:01:28.64 working in your garden, going to the grocery store 00:01:28.94\00:01:31.87 or whatever the case may be and that little cloud that 00:01:31.97\00:01:36.48 appears as a man's hand will be growing bigger and bigger 00:01:36.58\00:01:39.47 and eventually you will hear the sound of trumpets 00:01:39.77\00:01:43.69 and the mighty glory of Jesus and the angels. 00:01:44.19\00:01:48.36 And the sky will be lit 00:01:48.76\00:01:52.03 with the glory of that majestic second coming. 00:01:52.23\00:01:57.03 And I hope you'll be among those that their heart rejoices 00:01:57.89\00:02:01.76 and they say: "Finally the time has come 00:02:01.79\00:02:04.71 for our redemption from this evil world! " 00:02:05.01\00:02:08.38 There will be a group of people that will be very sad. 00:02:08.88\00:02:12.16 We hope you will be in the correct group: 00:02:12.56\00:02:14.92 the group that will be happy to see Jesus come. 00:02:15.12\00:02:17.27 So as we look at the prophecies we must understand 00:02:17.57\00:02:21.98 how to interpret these prophecies. 00:02:22.18\00:02:24.57 And Ty Gibson, the speaker during this hour, 00:02:24.77\00:02:27.04 he will be leading us through a Bible study 00:02:27.14\00:02:30.33 to help us understand the schools of Biblical 00:02:30.53\00:02:34.57 interpretation. And so we hope you have pens; Bible ready 00:02:34.67\00:02:38.90 and paper to be able to jot down this information. 00:02:39.21\00:02:42.13 And with this information you will be able to take a look 00:02:42.43\00:02:45.91 at the prophecies and understand the correct way 00:02:46.01\00:02:48.48 to interpret these prophecies and to stand on sure ground. 00:02:48.68\00:02:52.72 Amen? Amen. 00:02:53.02\00:02:54.44 Before Ty Gibson presents this message 00:02:54.65\00:02:57.67 we are blessed to have Sr. Celestine and Michael Barry. 00:02:57.70\00:03:01.98 Michael will be at the piano and Celestine will be singing 00:03:02.18\00:03:06.27 a hymn - very well known but very powerful - 00:03:06.57\00:03:09.87 The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power. 00:03:10.07\00:03:14.13 Before she sings and before the message 00:03:14.53\00:03:16.69 we would like to invite you to pray. 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.17 And if it is possible for you we'd like to invite you to 00:03:18.27\00:03:20.03 stand. I leave you with Sr. Celestine 00:04:50.04\00:04:53.68 and Michael Barry. 00:04:53.88\00:04:55.72 The blood that Jesus 00:05:13.18\00:05:17.34 shed for me, 00:05:17.64\00:05:20.75 Way back on Calvary; 00:05:22.99\00:05:28.02 The blood that gives me strength 00:05:28.43\00:05:32.33 from day to day, 00:05:32.53\00:05:36.06 It will never lose its pow'r. 00:05:36.26\00:05:42.19 It reaches to the highest 00:05:43.93\00:05:48.00 mountain, 00:05:48.20\00:05:50.52 And it flows to the lowest 00:05:51.02\00:05:55.48 valley, yes 00:05:55.68\00:05:58.86 the blood that gives me strength 00:05:59.06\00:06:02.58 from day to day, 00:06:02.88\00:06:06.35 It will never lose 00:06:06.65\00:06:10.00 its pow'r. 00:06:10.30\00:06:13.46 It soothes my doubts 00:06:14.82\00:06:18.11 and calms my fears, 00:06:18.51\00:06:21.92 And it dries all my tears; 00:06:24.17\00:06:29.21 Yes, the blood 00:06:29.31\00:06:31.05 that gives me strength 00:06:31.25\00:06:33.56 from day to day, 00:06:33.76\00:06:36.95 It will never lose 00:06:37.15\00:06:40.43 its pow'r. 00:06:40.73\00:06:43.93 It reaches 00:06:44.33\00:06:46.69 to the highest mountain, 00:06:46.89\00:06:51.16 And it flows 00:06:52.07\00:06:54.12 to the lowest valley 00:06:54.42\00:06:58.53 Yes, ooh, the blood 00:06:58.63\00:07:01.19 that gives me strength 00:07:01.39\00:07:03.76 from day to day, 00:07:04.06\00:07:07.27 It will never lose its pow'r. 00:07:07.57\00:07:13.54 It reaches 00:07:14.37\00:07:16.83 to the highest mountain, 00:07:17.13\00:07:21.49 And it flows 00:07:22.47\00:07:24.55 to the lowest valley 00:07:24.85\00:07:29.19 Yes, ooh, the blood 00:07:29.39\00:07:31.86 that gives me strength 00:07:32.16\00:07:34.66 from day to day, 00:07:34.96\00:07:38.43 It will never lose... 00:07:38.73\00:07:42.00 It will never lose... 00:07:42.30\00:07:45.61 It will never 00:07:45.91\00:07:50.26 lose 00:07:50.46\00:07:53.01 its 00:07:53.31\00:07:56.52 pow'r. 00:07:58.06\00:08:04.01 Amen! Amen! 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.58 Celestine, Michael... thank you. 00:08:12.00\00:08:13.84 Good afternoon everybody. Good afternoon! 00:08:14.24\00:08:16.74 I'm so glad to... Happy Birthday, Ty! 00:08:16.94\00:08:20.27 OK. 00:08:20.77\00:08:22.36 All the evidence I need 00:08:25.20\00:08:27.45 that James preached some time before me today. 00:08:29.25\00:08:33.09 But here's the fact of the matter; here's the fact of 00:08:35.22\00:08:37.37 the matter: I don't need that circumstantial evidence 00:08:37.47\00:08:40.14 because James thinks he's slick. 00:08:40.54\00:08:44.83 He thinks that he had a private conversation with you 00:08:45.13\00:08:49.08 forgetting the fact that this is on the airwaves 00:08:49.38\00:08:52.71 around the world 00:08:52.91\00:08:54.74 and that 3ABN is available in the very hotel room 00:08:56.26\00:08:59.82 where I was staying. 00:08:59.92\00:09:01.38 And I flipped it on knowing he was going to preach 00:09:03.15\00:09:06.31 at that particular time, and I stood there listening 00:09:06.51\00:09:08.87 to him preach because he tends to have things worth knowing. 00:09:08.90\00:09:12.57 So I knew... As soon as I walked on campus here 00:09:14.10\00:09:18.24 people were smiling at me. Sending me texts. 00:09:18.44\00:09:21.41 But listen, listen, here's what I know about James: 00:09:21.81\00:09:25.29 first of all, he's driving right now so he won't know 00:09:27.66\00:09:30.16 anything I'm about to share with you. 00:09:30.26\00:09:31.91 Second of all, I refer to him as 00:09:32.41\00:09:35.76 Elder James... not by virtue of ordination 00:09:35.96\00:09:40.71 but by virtue of age. That's right. 00:09:41.11\00:09:44.31 That is as a synonym for "Old Dude. " 00:09:44.61\00:09:48.21 James is older than me, but I want to tell you 00:09:48.62\00:09:50.80 something else about James because this Camp Meeting theme 00:09:50.90\00:09:53.46 is about the second advent, the second coming. 00:09:53.56\00:09:55.83 James and I began serving the Lord very early 00:09:56.23\00:10:00.06 and preaching the Word at a very young age together. 00:10:00.26\00:10:04.26 And James was so convicted that Jesus was coming soon - 00:10:04.66\00:10:10.16 and rightly so - that he said: "I'll never get married. " 00:10:10.36\00:10:14.12 I said: "Is that right? " 00:10:14.42\00:10:16.07 But he kept hanging around my house, and my wife was 00:10:16.47\00:10:18.79 making him clothes and feeding him 00:10:18.90\00:10:21.34 and just a great arrangement for James. 00:10:21.54\00:10:25.53 So I began to develop a conviction - straight from 00:10:27.46\00:10:30.24 the Lord, no doubt - that James ought to get married. 00:10:30.34\00:10:33.31 But James was sure that he shouldn't get married 00:10:34.71\00:10:36.92 because time was so short. 00:10:37.12\00:10:39.21 And then we had a Camp Meeting, and during that Camp Meeting 00:10:39.51\00:10:42.73 James made the acquaintance of a young lady. 00:10:42.93\00:10:45.94 We were all very young then. 00:10:46.14\00:10:47.84 And after the Camp Meeting he came to me 00:10:48.14\00:10:50.54 and he said: "Ty, I met this girl but you know I'm convicted 00:10:50.84\00:10:54.82 not to get married. " I said: "Yeah, I know you're 00:10:55.02\00:10:56.26 convicted not to get married but tell me about her. " 00:10:56.36\00:10:59.62 So he proceeded to tell me about this girl 00:11:01.60\00:11:03.78 that he met at Camp Meeting. 00:11:03.98\00:11:06.51 And I said: "James, here's what you need to do: 00:11:06.71\00:11:08.64 you need to write her a letter and you need to say something 00:11:08.94\00:11:12.46 like: 'My name is James. We met briefly. 00:11:12.56\00:11:15.94 You were at the Camp Meeting. 00:11:16.14\00:11:17.36 I would like to begin communication with you 00:11:17.56\00:11:19.79 to explore the possibility of marriage. ' " 00:11:19.89\00:11:22.04 He said: "That's not how you do it, is it? " 00:11:26.78\00:11:29.46 And I said: "When you believe that Jesus is coming soon, 00:11:31.09\00:11:34.09 brother, that's how you do it. 00:11:34.12\00:11:35.89 We're running out of time and we need to get you married up. " 00:11:36.19\00:11:39.55 He was absolutely determined not to get married; 00:11:39.95\00:11:43.15 I was absolutely determined that he would and should 00:11:43.45\00:11:45.70 get married just so there was somebody else to spend time 00:11:45.80\00:11:48.52 with him... although I enjoy thoroughly spending time 00:11:48.62\00:11:52.05 with him. One little part that you need to know 00:11:52.15\00:11:55.06 actually preparatory to our message, and that is this: 00:11:55.17\00:11:57.87 that he almost got hitched to a girl before the one... 00:11:58.27\00:12:02.37 Well, by the way... that girl actually wrote back. 00:12:02.47\00:12:04.51 He was so nervous: "She's not going to go for this. " 00:12:04.72\00:12:07.44 She wrote back and said: "Yes, let's begin communication. " 00:12:07.64\00:12:11.04 I said: "She will respect the fact that you got down to 00:12:11.34\00:12:13.71 business. " But there was a girl before that, 00:12:13.81\00:12:17.29 and he almost married her and I talked him out of that. 00:12:17.49\00:12:22.63 And you know why? 00:12:22.93\00:12:24.29 Because the only reason he considered marrying her 00:12:24.69\00:12:28.48 is because she was one of the very few human beings - 00:12:28.68\00:12:31.94 and the only female - who would listen to his entire two-day 00:12:32.14\00:12:36.17 explanation of the 7 trumpets. 00:12:36.27\00:12:38.45 And she believed it; she got it; it registered. 00:12:41.51\00:12:44.17 And he came to me excited: "She understands 00:12:44.37\00:12:47.59 the 7 trumpets. " I said: "James, that is a rare find! 00:12:47.79\00:12:51.09 That is a rare find that you found a girl 00:12:52.40\00:12:55.13 that understands the 7 trumpets. 00:12:55.26\00:12:57.80 But you're going to want to kiss her at some point 00:12:58.00\00:13:00.31 so you're going to have to make sure 00:13:00.62\00:13:02.41 that you are attracted on all levels... 00:13:02.51\00:13:05.27 not just the prophetic level. " Anyways... 00:13:05.47\00:13:09.15 So don't tell James I said any of that. 00:13:09.65\00:13:11.63 But it's all true. Well we need to get into the message. 00:13:13.35\00:13:16.30 You have seen the title, haven't you? 00:13:16.50\00:13:18.60 The title of this message? 00:13:18.80\00:13:20.18 The Schools of Interpretation. 00:13:20.38\00:13:22.42 How many of you salivate at the word school? 00:13:22.82\00:13:25.95 Me neither. 00:13:26.45\00:13:27.86 That title is such that I'm surprised that you're here. 00:13:28.16\00:13:32.66 Some of you could be napping right now 00:13:33.44\00:13:35.44 because that just does not sound very fascinating. 00:13:35.74\00:13:39.92 Doesn't sound interesting. 00:13:40.23\00:13:41.60 But I'm here to tell you that it's vitally important 00:13:42.01\00:13:45.35 that we understand that the Bible is written 00:13:45.65\00:13:50.55 in particular patterns. 00:13:50.58\00:13:52.73 There's a grid... there's a language to it. 00:13:53.13\00:13:56.33 God inspired the prophets to write these things 00:13:56.83\00:14:01.13 and God Himself - when He inspired these things - 00:14:01.43\00:14:05.52 had the interpretation in mind. 00:14:05.82\00:14:09.28 God knows what it means, and so just on a literary level 00:14:09.79\00:14:14.44 the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation 00:14:14.74\00:14:16.88 are an artistic wonder. 00:14:17.08\00:14:18.85 They are an incredibly beautiful coherent seamless 00:14:19.15\00:14:23.79 explanation of events that would transpire one after another 00:14:23.99\00:14:28.88 down through the corridors of time. 00:14:29.08\00:14:30.79 Now what we're about to discover is that God has 00:14:31.19\00:14:35.39 put in the prophecies themselves 00:14:35.69\00:14:38.96 the method by which the prophecies may be understood. 00:14:39.26\00:14:44.62 Now you should know at the outset that there are three 00:14:45.57\00:14:48.25 main ways of looking at Bible prophecy. 00:14:48.45\00:14:51.70 There is what is called the Preterist approach to Daniel 00:14:52.00\00:14:54.77 and Revelation. And that word simply means past. 00:14:54.87\00:14:58.52 Preter means past. So when you hear of the Preterist approach 00:14:58.82\00:15:03.11 it simply means that the prophecies of Daniel 00:15:03.31\00:15:06.47 and Revelation are largely for the most part interpreted 00:15:06.57\00:15:09.95 as having been fulfilled when do you think? 00:15:10.15\00:15:13.14 In the past... mostly with the Roman Empire in its pagan phase. 00:15:13.34\00:15:17.84 Are you with me so far? 00:15:18.04\00:15:19.17 Preterist means what? Past. 00:15:19.47\00:15:21.87 But then there's another interpretive approach 00:15:22.18\00:15:25.09 and it is called Futurism. 00:15:25.39\00:15:27.92 And of course Futurism looks at the prophecies of Daniel and 00:15:28.12\00:15:31.62 Revelation and for the most part interprets those prophecies 00:15:31.72\00:15:36.88 to be yet fulfilled in the... What do you think? The future. 00:15:37.08\00:15:42.30 Now there's another method of interpretation 00:15:42.60\00:15:46.78 and it's called the Historicist approach. 00:15:47.08\00:15:50.33 What's it called? The Historicist approach. 00:15:50.53\00:15:53.56 Now don't be deceived by this word. 00:15:53.86\00:15:56.43 Historicist is not a word in this technical sense 00:15:56.63\00:16:00.64 that means to convey the idea that it was all 00:16:00.85\00:16:04.47 fulfilled in history. That's the Preterist approach, right? 00:16:04.57\00:16:08.86 The Historicist approach spans 00:16:09.20\00:16:12.89 the entire area of prophetic history. 00:16:13.09\00:16:18.24 It takes in fulfillment of events in history. 00:16:18.55\00:16:23.13 It takes in the fact that we are poised as it were 00:16:23.53\00:16:27.63 on the edge of our seats right now in the present 00:16:27.83\00:16:30.68 awaiting the fulfillment of certain events. 00:16:30.88\00:16:33.07 And it takes into account that there are yet future events 00:16:33.57\00:16:37.16 that have yet to unfold. So the Historicist approach 00:16:37.46\00:16:41.76 straddles the entire span of prophetic history. 00:16:42.16\00:16:48.12 It's not all in the past; it's not all in the future. 00:16:48.32\00:16:51.62 And therefore the Historicist approach is not only 00:16:52.03\00:16:55.29 relevant to history but the Historicist approach 00:16:55.49\00:16:59.52 is the only approach that is inherently calculated 00:16:59.82\00:17:04.96 to give us the proper kind or quality of urgency. 00:17:05.16\00:17:10.98 Because as we're about to discover 00:17:11.28\00:17:13.35 according to the Historicist approach we are... listen very 00:17:13.65\00:17:16.62 carefully... we are on the tail end of the fulfillment 00:17:16.73\00:17:22.37 of every one of the great prophetic lines. 00:17:22.57\00:17:26.68 We are teetering on the edge of eternity 00:17:26.98\00:17:30.58 as we're about to discover. 00:17:30.78\00:17:32.02 Now, the Historicist approach is embedded in the text. 00:17:32.32\00:17:37.19 The Preterist approach and the Futurist approach 00:17:37.59\00:17:40.64 need to be imposed on the text. 00:17:40.84\00:17:44.19 Whereas the Historicist interpretation 00:17:44.49\00:17:47.76 is what is obviously intended in the text itself. 00:17:48.06\00:17:53.01 Turn to Revelation chapter 1. 00:17:53.24\00:17:55.00 Revelation chapter 1... and here we have 00:17:55.30\00:17:59.77 the first vision that John received 00:17:59.97\00:18:03.18 for the book of Revelation. 00:18:04.44\00:18:06.28 And it's important to notice the first vision. 00:18:06.58\00:18:09.02 We tend to run off into the future visions 00:18:09.22\00:18:13.93 of the seven churches, the seven seals, the seven trumpets 00:18:14.13\00:18:17.41 etc. and to overlook the fact 00:18:17.62\00:18:20.33 that there is an introductory vision. 00:18:20.53\00:18:23.42 There is a preliminary vision that constitutes 00:18:23.82\00:18:26.96 the lens if you will... the paradigmatic window... 00:18:27.16\00:18:30.31 the grid through which all the other prophecies 00:18:30.51\00:18:34.28 are to be understood, all right? 00:18:34.38\00:18:36.41 So the first vision is in chapter 1 of Revelation. 00:18:36.72\00:18:41.36 And for the sake of time I'm not going to read all the words. 00:18:41.56\00:18:44.77 You're going to have to be a Bible student with me 00:18:44.87\00:18:46.42 right now because this is a big picture message. 00:18:46.72\00:18:50.62 We're looking at the forest right now, not the individual 00:18:50.92\00:18:53.62 trees. I'm going to turn you to all the texts 00:18:53.72\00:18:56.31 but I'm not going to read long passages to you 00:18:56.41\00:18:58.47 because I want you to do kind of a fly-by with me 00:18:58.67\00:19:01.23 of the prophecies of Revelation. 00:19:01.43\00:19:03.04 I want you to get the aerial view so you get oriented on 00:19:03.24\00:19:06.26 the landscape of prophecy so that you're equipped 00:19:06.46\00:19:10.13 to go back and read the book of Revelation 00:19:10.33\00:19:13.16 with clarity of vision because now you know 00:19:13.36\00:19:16.92 how to read the text, all right? 00:19:17.12\00:19:19.47 So in Revelation chapter 1 we have the first vision. 00:19:19.77\00:19:22.15 It is a vision of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:19:22.45\00:19:26.24 in verses 13 and onward 00:19:26.44\00:19:30.72 and the description picks up in verse 13. 00:19:30.82\00:19:35.60 "And in the midst of the seven lamp stands one like 00:19:36.00\00:19:38.14 the Son of Man. " Notice the language very carefully. 00:19:38.25\00:19:40.69 In verse 13 it says: "He was clothed 00:19:41.09\00:19:43.56 with a garment down to the feet. " 00:19:43.76\00:19:46.74 And then it says in verse 13 that He was "girded about" 00:19:46.94\00:19:49.95 what part of His body? "His chest, " and it was with a 00:19:50.05\00:19:53.97 "golden band" or another version says a golden girdle 00:19:54.27\00:19:58.82 around His chest. Try to visualize Jesus and 00:19:59.02\00:20:02.83 something is going to emerge to our understanding here. 00:20:02.93\00:20:05.52 Clothed with a garment. That is a white garment of linen 00:20:05.72\00:20:09.20 down to the feet. Down to the feet. Girded 00:20:09.30\00:20:13.22 with a golden band. And then notice verse 14: 00:20:13.42\00:20:16.39 "His hair was white like wool, as white as snow 00:20:16.59\00:20:19.10 and His eyes were like... " What everybody? "like fire. " 00:20:19.40\00:20:23.91 This is fascinating. But not only were His eyes like fire. 00:20:24.11\00:20:28.03 Notice in verse 15 that John now moves to His feet. 00:20:28.23\00:20:32.17 And he said that "His feet were like fine brass 00:20:32.57\00:20:36.77 as if burning in a furnace. " 00:20:36.97\00:20:40.52 Brass burning in a furnace. 00:20:40.82\00:20:44.52 "His voice was like many waters. " Verse 16. 00:20:44.82\00:20:47.21 "And He had in His right hand... " specifically... 00:20:47.51\00:20:51.74 "His right hand seven stars. 00:20:51.95\00:20:55.54 And out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword. " 00:20:55.84\00:20:58.65 And notice this: "His countenance... " His face... 00:20:58.85\00:21:01.63 "was like the sun shining in all its strength. " 00:21:03.03\00:21:07.68 I want you to notice that what John has ingeniously done here 00:21:08.28\00:21:12.94 is that he has given us a description of Jesus 00:21:13.14\00:21:18.30 that is filled with Old Testament codes. 00:21:18.80\00:21:22.61 Language is important. It's vitally important for you 00:21:24.62\00:21:28.01 and I to have a language base in order to understand 00:21:28.11\00:21:31.54 the composition of words. 00:21:31.57\00:21:32.88 That's the study of etymology. 00:21:32.92\00:21:34.37 If I say to you for example 00:21:34.77\00:21:36.72 "You're adorkable" you know that what I've done 00:21:37.02\00:21:41.84 is amalgamate two words that you are familiar with 00:21:41.94\00:21:44.76 so you can come up with the definition. 00:21:44.96\00:21:46.98 You know that I've just employed adorable and dork 00:21:47.28\00:21:50.66 which means you're adorable in a dorky kind of way. 00:21:50.79\00:21:53.91 So you can decipher the word based on the etymology. 00:21:54.21\00:21:58.83 You know - right? - that two words have been combined 00:21:59.14\00:22:02.59 to create this new concept. 00:22:02.69\00:22:04.68 If I say to you that the meal that I just had was 00:22:05.08\00:22:07.59 "scrumbilicious" I'm making up a new word 00:22:07.69\00:22:11.91 in order to convey it was scrumptious and delicious. 00:22:12.11\00:22:16.86 That's right. If I say: "My daughter Leah 00:22:17.16\00:22:20.20 is a fantabulous human being 00:22:20.40\00:22:23.00 I'm not content with fabulous... 00:22:23.30\00:22:26.30 she's fantastic AND fabulous. 00:22:26.60\00:22:30.64 So because we have language 00:22:30.94\00:22:33.58 we know how to make sense 00:22:33.88\00:22:35.68 out of the new things that we encounter in language, right? 00:22:35.78\00:22:38.99 Are you with me so far? So the book of Revelation 00:22:39.19\00:22:43.86 assumes Biblical literacy. 00:22:44.10\00:22:47.06 You can't read the book of Revelation in a vacuum. 00:22:47.56\00:22:50.44 It is a book that is composed of Old Testament 00:22:51.45\00:22:56.03 symbols and types. It's a language all its own. 00:22:56.23\00:23:01.38 So John in a very short space 00:23:01.62\00:23:04.37 is describing things - get this - that are referring back. 00:23:04.57\00:23:10.08 Notice what he's describing 00:23:10.58\00:23:12.53 as the first graphic comes on the screen. 00:23:12.73\00:23:15.97 Notice what he's describing. The Old Testament sanctuary 00:23:16.27\00:23:20.23 was composed of a high white linen wall 00:23:20.53\00:23:25.22 for the entire enclosure called the courtyard. Right? 00:23:25.42\00:23:30.69 As you step in through the first gate into the courtyard 00:23:30.93\00:23:34.08 you encounter an altar that was made out of brass 00:23:34.28\00:23:38.92 that had a fire continually burning upon it 00:23:39.12\00:23:42.43 for sacrificial purposes. 00:23:42.63\00:23:44.17 As you step into the holy place you encounter 00:23:44.47\00:23:48.75 seven luminous lamps... 00:23:49.05\00:23:53.43 the candelabra. 00:23:53.73\00:23:56.01 And as you step into the Most Holy Place 00:23:56.11\00:23:59.16 you're crossing a threshold of the third veil. 00:23:59.36\00:24:03.22 The first into the courtyard; the second into the holy place. 00:24:03.42\00:24:06.92 There's a third veil. It's unique. It's interwoven 00:24:07.12\00:24:11.74 with gold. It's the only one. And then in the Most Holy Place 00:24:11.97\00:24:17.89 is the Shekinah glory. 00:24:18.09\00:24:21.39 John says: "I saw Jesus and He was clothed with a garment 00:24:21.59\00:24:25.88 down to the feet. And His feet were like fine brass 00:24:26.08\00:24:30.79 as if they were burning in a furnace. 00:24:30.99\00:24:32.86 And as I looked at Him in His right hand were 7 stars. 00:24:33.16\00:24:37.79 And He was girded about His chest with gold 00:24:38.12\00:24:42.39 and His face was like the sun shining in all its glory. " 00:24:42.80\00:24:48.63 What John has described is the person of Jesus Christ 00:24:49.70\00:24:53.52 and simultaneously He has described the Old Testament 00:24:54.02\00:24:58.39 sanctuary with little trigger points so that the Biblically 00:24:58.59\00:25:02.42 literate person - the person who is familiar with scripture - 00:25:02.53\00:25:05.15 will say: "Oh, we're dealing with sanctuary language 00:25:05.35\00:25:10.64 and terminology as these prophecies unfold before us. " 00:25:10.74\00:25:14.75 It's brilliant, but there's more to it than that 00:25:15.05\00:25:18.66 because not only has John described Jesus as the temple 00:25:19.06\00:25:24.10 Himself, which - parenthetical statement just for a moment 00:25:24.30\00:25:26.89 here - Jesus Himself did the same thing. 00:25:26.99\00:25:28.90 You remember His conversation with the disciples where He said 00:25:29.10\00:25:31.40 "Destroy this temple and in 3 days I'll raise it up. " 00:25:31.80\00:25:34.53 They said: "How can You do that? They've been building this 00:25:34.94\00:25:37.90 temple for years. How can You? " And then what did the text say? 00:25:38.00\00:25:41.46 "He spoke of the temple of His body. " 00:25:41.76\00:25:46.41 Jesus described Himself as the temple of God. 00:25:46.61\00:25:50.61 If you simply do a body overlay 00:25:50.81\00:25:53.99 and transpose it over the sanctuary's aerial view, 00:25:54.10\00:25:57.69 the floor plan, the head would fall in the Most Holy Place 00:25:57.79\00:26:00.85 area and the feet at the altar of brass. 00:26:01.05\00:26:04.30 And the right hand would fall at the 7-branched candlestick 00:26:04.60\00:26:08.38 and the golden band of the veil into the Most Holy Place 00:26:08.58\00:26:13.62 would be at His chest. John has done something amazing here. 00:26:13.82\00:26:17.01 But it's more amazing... because the sanctuary, if you 00:26:17.11\00:26:20.21 could go back to that graphic, the sanctuary is not only 00:26:20.31\00:26:25.10 an illustration of individual Christian experience. 00:26:25.30\00:26:29.62 The sanctuary is an illustration of the entire historic span 00:26:30.12\00:26:36.08 of the plan of salvation. 00:26:36.28\00:26:38.15 It's a historic illustration of the various junctures 00:26:38.55\00:26:44.09 of the plan of salvation. 00:26:44.30\00:26:46.39 Jesus is incarnate. He comes into the world 00:26:46.70\00:26:50.90 and into the courtyard. And the cross of Christ is symbolized 00:26:51.20\00:26:56.01 by this altar of brass. 00:26:56.11\00:26:58.08 Jesus is crucified there. The courtyard represents 00:26:58.48\00:27:02.86 that phase of salvation history that is encompassed 00:27:03.06\00:27:07.10 by the incarnation, life, death, 00:27:07.30\00:27:10.59 and burial and resurrection of Jesus. 00:27:10.69\00:27:12.94 But then Jesus rose again and He ascended on high 00:27:13.24\00:27:17.81 to the right hand of the Father. 00:27:18.01\00:27:19.89 Jesus went into the holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, 00:27:20.19\00:27:24.29 there to continue... there to continue the salvation 00:27:24.49\00:27:28.47 work now in the role of High Priest. 00:27:28.57\00:27:32.13 And then Jesus in 1844... 00:27:33.43\00:27:36.36 we don't have time to demonstrate or prove that, 00:27:36.46\00:27:38.15 that's in another study entirely... this is the aerial 00:27:38.35\00:27:40.55 view, this is the forest - not the trees... 00:27:40.65\00:27:42.87 In 1844 Jesus moved 00:27:43.37\00:27:48.08 into the Most Holy Place phase of the plan of salvation 00:27:48.18\00:27:52.74 preparatory to what we sometimes refer to as the 00:27:52.94\00:27:57.31 final atonement - Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement, 00:27:57.51\00:28:00.33 the Day of Judgment and involv- ing the scapegoat transaction 00:28:00.44\00:28:05.02 where the scapegoat is sent into the wilderness 00:28:05.32\00:28:09.07 to perish for want of sustenance and support 00:28:09.27\00:28:12.30 representing the fact that ultimately 00:28:12.51\00:28:15.30 while Jesus by His sacrifice is the Savior of the world 00:28:15.33\00:28:19.71 Satan will finally bear the responsibility 00:28:20.01\00:28:24.20 for the sin problem as the one who is the originator 00:28:24.51\00:28:29.41 of sin. And the devil will come to the place where he 00:28:29.65\00:28:34.05 is going to perish as it were for want of the support 00:28:34.25\00:28:39.84 that he has had due to the lies he has told regarding 00:28:40.04\00:28:43.58 the character of God. Again, that's a whole "nother" study. 00:28:43.68\00:28:46.47 But simply what has happened is salvation history has 00:28:46.67\00:28:50.00 unfolded forward so that great clarity has been brought 00:28:50.10\00:28:54.80 to the issues in the great controversy, most importantly 00:28:55.00\00:28:58.19 great clarity has been brought regarding the love of God. 00:28:58.39\00:29:02.24 The character of God. The glorious beauty of the 00:29:02.44\00:29:06.22 character of God has been fully exonerated and vindicated 00:29:06.32\00:29:10.70 on the premise of the life, death, burial, and resurrection 00:29:10.90\00:29:15.54 of Christ: the vindicator of God's character. 00:29:15.74\00:29:18.51 And that vindication - when it is preached, when the gospel 00:29:18.81\00:29:22.59 is preached to the world - shifts the sympathies 00:29:22.69\00:29:27.19 of the world in the direction of Christ away from 00:29:27.30\00:29:31.02 the edifice of lies that have been told regarding 00:29:31.12\00:29:33.87 the character of God. And this is where the loud cry 00:29:33.97\00:29:37.11 of the third angel's message, illumines the whole world 00:29:37.21\00:29:40.10 with the glory of God. 00:29:40.20\00:29:41.80 People globally, through the proclamation of the gospel, 00:29:42.00\00:29:45.41 begin to believe a new doctrinal system 00:29:45.61\00:29:49.38 that makes God out to be the beautiful God that He really is. 00:29:49.58\00:29:53.59 And the lies that Satan has propagated through the system 00:29:54.09\00:29:58.25 of Babylon begin to fall for want of believability 00:29:58.35\00:30:02.44 on the premise of the beautiful proclamation of the gospel. 00:30:03.61\00:30:06.99 Now, with that brief background 00:30:07.19\00:30:10.65 Revelation chapter 1 has told us 00:30:10.95\00:30:13.25 that what we're about to encounter in the prophecies of 00:30:13.65\00:30:17.40 Revelation is a series of prophecies that take in 00:30:17.50\00:30:22.55 a span of time beginning with Christ 00:30:22.65\00:30:27.45 and His death at the cross: 00:30:27.55\00:30:28.70 His life, death, burial and resurrection. 00:30:28.80\00:30:30.86 This is the grounded point of the prophecy. 00:30:31.46\00:30:36.69 This is the starting point of the prophecy: 00:30:36.79\00:30:39.37 the apostolic period. All of the prophecies that follow 00:30:39.57\00:30:43.73 are intended to give us a repeat and enlarge picture 00:30:43.93\00:30:48.87 of events that will transpire from the time of Christ and the 00:30:49.01\00:30:52.14 apostles straight on through the courtyard phase, 00:30:52.24\00:30:56.25 the holy place into the Most Holy Place. 00:30:56.35\00:30:58.56 Final atonement, the shifting of the weight of 00:30:58.76\00:31:01.45 responsibility onto Satan, the vindication of God's character, 00:31:01.55\00:31:04.80 the end of the great controversy and the second advent. 00:31:05.00\00:31:07.42 This is the span of history covered. 00:31:07.82\00:31:10.08 Now with that in mind, let's do a brief overview 00:31:10.39\00:31:15.24 of the prophecies that unfold at this point 00:31:15.44\00:31:18.27 in order to grasp the Historicist pattern 00:31:18.87\00:31:22.99 that follows the sanctuary out- line of the vision in chapter 1. 00:31:23.19\00:31:26.49 First of all, in chapters 3 through 5 of Revelation 00:31:26.79\00:31:29.70 we have the first prophecy that covers the prophetic span. 00:31:29.90\00:31:34.82 Of course, Revelation 1 is the first prophecy 00:31:35.02\00:31:37.08 that's introductory in setting course for us 00:31:37.28\00:31:40.66 as we've just established. 00:31:40.86\00:31:41.99 But Revelation 3 through 5 is the seven churches 00:31:42.29\00:31:47.22 prophecy. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7... 00:31:47.42\00:31:51.18 they cover a span of history. 00:31:51.38\00:31:53.11 Ephesus, the first church, is the apostolic age. 00:31:53.51\00:31:57.08 And as church history unfolds forward 00:31:57.58\00:32:01.80 we come to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... 00:32:02.00\00:32:05.43 Now watch this carefully: 00:32:05.63\00:32:07.18 When we come to the 6th church 00:32:07.38\00:32:09.12 which is the church of Philadelphia 00:32:09.22\00:32:11.48 we have very fascinating language that ought to be 00:32:11.78\00:32:15.12 familiar to us at this point 00:32:15.22\00:32:16.80 that is invoked for the interpretation. 00:32:17.00\00:32:19.70 In chapter 3 of Revelation 00:32:20.10\00:32:22.75 in the Philadelphia period - that is, in the 6th church... 00:32:22.85\00:32:26.52 the little hinge period between churches 6 and 7- 00:32:26.72\00:32:30.17 seven being Laodicea preparatory to the 2nd coming - 00:32:30.37\00:32:33.57 Watch this: when we come to the 6th church 00:32:33.77\00:32:36.33 suddenly John is told: "Behold I have set before you 00:32:36.63\00:32:41.45 an open door and no man can shut it. " 00:32:41.75\00:32:47.30 What is this language? 00:32:47.80\00:32:49.38 Suddenly we're face to face with a door... a passageway. 00:32:49.68\00:32:53.39 Now it is an experiential door, and experiential passageway, 00:32:53.69\00:32:58.69 that we can apply to our individual Christian experience 00:32:58.99\00:33:02.51 but it's a historic transition. 00:33:02.72\00:33:05.76 During the Philadelphia period, "Behold I have set before you 00:33:06.26\00:33:09.06 an open door" specifically refers to the door into the 00:33:09.16\00:33:12.83 Most Holy Place. This is telling us that at this 00:33:12.93\00:33:16.89 particular juncture of prophetic history 00:33:17.09\00:33:19.59 a great transition is going to occur. 00:33:19.80\00:33:22.28 Jesus is going to move from the holy place phase of His 00:33:22.58\00:33:26.92 High Priestly ministry into the Most Holy Place phase. 00:33:27.02\00:33:31.81 So... Most Holy Place language is invoked 00:33:32.25\00:33:37.05 for us to understand where we are in the span 00:33:37.35\00:33:41.32 of prophetic history. 00:33:41.42\00:33:42.82 Then we come to the prophecy of the seven seals. 00:33:43.02\00:33:45.64 Seven churches... seven seals. 00:33:45.84\00:33:48.19 As the seven seals prophecy unfolds in chapters 6 through 8 00:33:48.49\00:33:52.32 please notice with me that again 00:33:52.62\00:33:56.40 we're grounded in history with the 1st seal referring to 00:33:56.60\00:34:00.16 political events that are transpiring in the larger world 00:34:00.36\00:34:05.74 whereas the first vision of the seven churches 00:34:05.95\00:34:09.22 is specifically interested in what's going on among God's 00:34:09.42\00:34:12.77 people within the church. 00:34:12.87\00:34:15.06 When we come to the seven seals we've got a repeat and enlarge 00:34:15.36\00:34:19.28 principle that we're encountering. 00:34:19.38\00:34:21.09 It's as if God is saying: "OK, I've just moved you from 00:34:21.39\00:34:24.89 the first church down through time... apostolic period down 00:34:25.09\00:34:28.42 to the 7th church preparatory to the 2nd coming. 00:34:28.62\00:34:31.35 OK... you got that? " 00:34:31.55\00:34:32.95 We say: "Yes, Lord. " 00:34:33.15\00:34:34.37 He says: "Now back up with Me 00:34:34.57\00:34:36.02 and I'm going to give you another vision that's going to 00:34:36.32\00:34:39.17 emphasize different events that are running concurrent... 00:34:39.27\00:34:43.30 simultaneous to the unfolding of this same span of history. " 00:34:43.51\00:34:47.79 I want to emphasize same span of history. 00:34:47.99\00:34:52.06 So the seven seals unfold forward until we come 00:34:52.36\00:34:57.36 to the 6th and 7th seal. And again we find 00:34:57.66\00:35:02.39 that sanctuary language is suddenly invoked again. 00:35:02.59\00:35:06.10 When we come to chapter 8 and verses 1 through 4... 00:35:06.41\00:35:10.63 fascinating... suddenly we have a golden censer 00:35:10.83\00:35:15.31 that is filled with incense which the prophet tells us 00:35:15.61\00:35:19.72 constitutes the prayers of the saints mingled with that incense 00:35:20.02\00:35:23.50 which is the righteousness of Christ which makes our 00:35:23.70\00:35:26.37 prayers acceptable before God. 00:35:26.48\00:35:29.30 So what is the censer? Just as the door that is invoked 00:35:29.80\00:35:34.95 at the end of the seven churches prophecy 00:35:35.15\00:35:38.18 brings our minds to the Most Holy Place - 00:35:38.38\00:35:41.30 to that veil into the Most Holy Place - 00:35:41.60\00:35:43.62 the censer belongs to what part of the sanctuary? 00:35:43.92\00:35:47.70 The Most Holy Place. 00:35:48.94\00:35:50.33 The censer belongs to the Most Holy Place. 00:35:50.73\00:35:53.65 The priest on the Day of Atonement - 00:35:53.85\00:35:56.25 post 1844 in the anti-type... 00:35:56.45\00:35:58.94 The priest takes some of the incense off of the altar 00:35:59.44\00:36:02.16 of incense in the holy place, right? 00:36:02.26\00:36:05.27 Puts it in the censer and then goes into the Most Holy Place 00:36:05.50\00:36:09.01 on the Day of Atonement, waving the censer to fill it 00:36:09.21\00:36:11.03 with smoke. There's practical purpose for this, by the way, 00:36:11.13\00:36:13.97 that Isaiah chapter 6 points out to us, and that is 00:36:14.07\00:36:17.06 that the Shekinah glory is there, so the priest is filling 00:36:17.16\00:36:19.70 the Most Holy Place with smoke in order to dim the glory 00:36:19.80\00:36:23.30 of God's presence so that he can endure 00:36:23.50\00:36:26.90 moving through the Day of Atonement ceremony 00:36:27.10\00:36:29.58 and not be destroyed. Josephus tells us - 00:36:29.78\00:36:32.46 and this is extra-Biblical - Josephus tells us 00:36:32.66\00:36:35.77 that they also tied a rope around brother high priest's 00:36:36.07\00:36:38.88 ankle and let him feed his way in there 00:36:39.08\00:36:43.48 and they're listening for the bells that were at the bottom 00:36:43.78\00:36:46.63 of his garment. As long as you hear those bells 00:36:46.73\00:36:49.26 you know everything is cool. 00:36:49.46\00:36:51.24 But then all of a sudden... no bells. 00:36:51.44\00:36:54.88 "Let's wait a little longer. " Still no bells. 00:36:55.28\00:36:57.76 "Let's wait a little longer. " No bells. "I say we pull. " 00:36:58.06\00:37:00.73 They pull the rope and out comes the high priest. 00:37:01.03\00:37:04.41 This was the holy presence of God 00:37:04.71\00:37:08.02 that required a certain preparedness 00:37:08.33\00:37:12.18 to endure. So we see that at the seven seals prophecy 00:37:13.48\00:37:18.31 as we come to the conclusion of the seven seals 00:37:18.51\00:37:22.66 that hinge point between number six and number seven. 00:37:22.96\00:37:27.73 Again, Most Holy Place language is invoked. Why? 00:37:27.93\00:37:31.44 To orient us. Remember we're dealing with a language here. 00:37:31.84\00:37:36.83 We're dealing with sanctuary language. 00:37:37.43\00:37:39.65 The first vision prepared us by teaching us the language. 00:37:39.85\00:37:44.86 The first vision referred us back to the sanctuary 00:37:45.09\00:37:48.23 and with that language now continually we are oriented. 00:37:48.33\00:37:52.47 Where are we in the span of prophetic time? 00:37:52.67\00:37:55.31 We're again between the sixth and the seventh seal. 00:37:55.51\00:37:58.84 We're at that phase of salvation history 00:37:59.04\00:38:01.50 represented by the Most Holy Place. 00:38:01.70\00:38:03.25 Post 1844 just prior to the second coming of Christ. 00:38:03.45\00:38:07.42 OK... watch the pattern continue. 00:38:07.72\00:38:10.27 We come then to the seven trumpets prophecy 00:38:10.57\00:38:14.14 of Revelation in chapters 8 through 11. 00:38:14.54\00:38:18.78 As the seven trumpets prophecy unfolds, again 00:38:19.18\00:38:23.11 First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth trumpet. 00:38:23.42\00:38:27.99 And when we come to the seventh trumpet 00:38:28.19\00:38:31.83 look at the language in chapter 11 verse 19 of 00:38:32.03\00:38:35.62 Revelation. Chapter 11 and verse 19 of Revelation. 00:38:35.72\00:38:40.32 We're now at the 7th trumpet - 00:38:45.06\00:38:47.68 in the period related to the seventh trumpet - 00:38:48.85\00:38:52.59 verse 19 of chapter 11 of Revelation: 00:38:52.82\00:38:55.14 "Then the temple of God was opened in heaven 00:38:55.54\00:38:59.43 and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. 00:38:59.63\00:39:03.52 And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings 00:39:04.03\00:39:09.48 an earthquake and great hail. " 00:39:09.68\00:39:12.06 What is this ark? And where does it belong 00:39:12.26\00:39:15.50 in your Biblical orientation? 00:39:15.70\00:39:18.17 Where does it belong? The Most Holy Place. 00:39:18.37\00:39:21.80 So the ark that belongs to the Most Holy Place 00:39:22.30\00:39:25.90 is now brought to our attention 00:39:26.20\00:39:28.94 during that period represented by the seventh trumpet. 00:39:29.34\00:39:34.46 Fascinating! What we see here is a pattern of language 00:39:34.66\00:39:38.71 in which the prophet over and over again is saying 00:39:38.91\00:39:41.71 We begin here - apostolic age, the time of Christ. 00:39:41.91\00:39:44.49 The Christ event in it's totality: death, burial, 00:39:44.69\00:39:47.97 resurrection. The entire Christ event is the launching point, 00:39:48.07\00:39:52.62 the anchor, the beginning of the prophecy. 00:39:52.72\00:39:55.25 Seven churches unfold. Boom! 00:39:55.45\00:39:57.83 Most Holy Place language is triggered 00:39:58.03\00:40:00.53 in the sixth church. 00:40:00.83\00:40:04.22 He backs up... seven seals. Most Holy Place language 00:40:04.52\00:40:08.86 is invoked again at the end of the sixth seal. 00:40:09.26\00:40:15.17 Seven trumpets? Back up. Again, repeat and enlarge 00:40:15.47\00:40:19.23 dealing with other events that are running simultaneous to 00:40:19.63\00:40:23.74 this same period of time. 00:40:23.95\00:40:26.14 And as they back up and begin to move forward 00:40:26.44\00:40:29.52 what happens again? 00:40:29.72\00:40:30.99 We come to the end of the seven trumpets prophecy 00:40:31.29\00:40:33.97 and John very consistently again invokes Most Holy Place 00:40:34.17\00:40:39.16 furniture, Most Holy Place language. 00:40:39.36\00:40:42.24 Again we're oriented. We know where we are in time. 00:40:42.54\00:40:46.82 This next vision, and this is extremely important to grasp 00:40:47.05\00:40:50.34 this next point, is what we're going to refer to as 00:40:50.44\00:40:53.32 "the cosmic war vision. " Chapters 12 through 14. 00:40:53.52\00:40:58.86 You remember chapter 12 begins in verse 1 where John 00:41:00.00\00:41:04.12 sees a woman clothed with the sun with the moon under her feet 00:41:04.32\00:41:08.83 with a garland of 12 stars on her head, right? 00:41:09.03\00:41:13.05 And as the vision unfolds we realize that this woman 00:41:13.46\00:41:17.23 is about to give birth to a Man Child. 00:41:17.26\00:41:20.34 And we understand in the Historicist interpretation 00:41:20.84\00:41:24.92 that this Man Child to be born to the woman - 00:41:25.22\00:41:27.92 that is, born to Israel and born to the church 00:41:28.02\00:41:31.71 at that critical juncture of transition 00:41:31.91\00:41:34.20 between Old Testament Israel, New Testament Israel - 00:41:34.41\00:41:37.60 at that critical juncture Israel which is the posterity 00:41:37.81\00:41:42.48 through which Messiah was to come 00:41:42.68\00:41:44.52 Jesus is born to the world through an Abrahamic lineage. 00:41:46.15\00:41:51.05 He comes into the world and the prophecy unfolds and tells us 00:41:51.35\00:41:55.03 there was an attempt on His life. 00:41:55.23\00:41:56.78 We corroborate the evidence in the gospels and find out 00:41:57.18\00:42:00.05 that it was Herod that made the attempt on the baby Jesus' life. 00:42:00.26\00:42:04.12 Right? This is all in Revelation 12. 00:42:04.42\00:42:06.59 Revelation 12 brings us right up to the cross 00:42:06.99\00:42:09.60 and tells us in verses 7-9 that there was war in heaven. 00:42:09.80\00:42:13.02 That Michael and His angels fought and the devil and his 00:42:13.42\00:42:16.16 angels fought and prevailed not. Neither was a place found 00:42:16.26\00:42:19.27 for them any more in heaven. 00:42:19.38\00:42:20.97 And the devil was cast out. 00:42:21.37\00:42:23.36 And that entire segment of the prophecy - 00:42:23.66\00:42:26.94 this is remarkable... John is doing something amazing - 00:42:27.34\00:42:30.30 he is giving us a picture of the great controversy 00:42:30.70\00:42:34.29 as it began in heaven with Lucifer's rebellion 00:42:34.49\00:42:38.35 and simultaneously he's taking us to the cross 00:42:38.65\00:42:41.50 where Jesus conquers the devil in principle 00:42:41.90\00:42:46.43 by revealing the unparalleled love of God 00:42:46.63\00:42:50.78 at Calvary so that Jesus could say in John chapter 12 00:42:50.99\00:42:55.03 "I beheld Satan fall like lightning from heaven 00:42:55.43\00:43:00.78 and I, when I am lifted up, will draw all back to Me... 00:43:00.98\00:43:06.08 all peoples to Me. " 00:43:06.28\00:43:08.10 What is Jesus explaining? 00:43:08.31\00:43:09.71 He's saying that "When I die on the cross there will be 00:43:10.11\00:43:13.10 such a brilliant and beautiful revelation 00:43:13.20\00:43:17.27 of the character of God in this unprecedented 00:43:17.47\00:43:21.06 selfless love for you that everyone who sees it 00:43:21.26\00:43:25.20 two things will happen for them: 00:43:25.40\00:43:27.10 Satan will lose credibility in their theological paradigm, 00:43:27.40\00:43:31.71 in their emotional experience, 00:43:31.91\00:43:33.82 in their entire life experience Satan will lose credibility. 00:43:34.02\00:43:37.61 He will fall as it were from heavenly sympathies 00:43:37.91\00:43:41.62 and from human sympathies by the revelation of God's love 00:43:41.82\00:43:44.66 at the cross. " But not only that, not only will Satan fall 00:43:44.76\00:43:48.82 but Jesus said: "And everybody who sees Me 00:43:49.02\00:43:51.51 dying on the cross will be drawn back to Me. " 00:43:51.71\00:43:54.78 That's the vindication principle. 00:43:54.89\00:43:56.53 This is where Jesus is giving a revelation of the character 00:43:56.93\00:43:59.95 of God that is unprecedented in all of universal history 00:44:00.05\00:44:03.60 and persuades intelligent, sentient, free-will creatures 00:44:03.90\00:44:09.35 that God is love in the most extreme and beautiful sense 00:44:09.55\00:44:12.76 imaginable. This brings the hearts of free-will creatures 00:44:12.86\00:44:17.06 to a voluntary worship of God. 00:44:17.26\00:44:19.79 Not under compulsion. No coercion. 00:44:20.00\00:44:22.42 No force; no manipulation. 00:44:22.62\00:44:24.38 We simply see the beauty of God's character 00:44:24.58\00:44:27.35 and voluntarily we begin to gravitate toward Him. 00:44:27.66\00:44:30.89 That's the power of Calvary. 00:44:31.29\00:44:33.38 And as the prophecy of the cosmic war unfolds... 00:44:33.88\00:44:38.18 Watch this... go to Revelation 12 now... 00:44:38.29\00:44:40.34 Revelation chapter 12. 00:44:40.64\00:44:42.49 The whole history unfolds. We have the church in the 00:44:43.33\00:44:46.26 wilderness during the 1,260-year period 00:44:46.36\00:44:48.63 brought to view from 538 AD to 1798 AD. 00:44:48.93\00:44:52.54 That's all in chapter 12 of Revelation. 00:44:52.74\00:44:54.38 But then watch this as we come again following the same 00:44:54.68\00:44:58.69 pattern, the same trajectory, we come to Revelation chapter 12 00:44:58.89\00:45:02.64 to the last verse. We have moved from the birth of Jesus 00:45:02.84\00:45:07.23 in the earlier verses of chapter 12, 00:45:08.39\00:45:10.65 the attempt on His life, the church going into the wilderness 00:45:10.85\00:45:14.93 during a persecution period, 00:45:15.13\00:45:17.20 and now we have a people emerging post 1844... 00:45:17.40\00:45:22.39 and here's how they're described. Verse 17: 00:45:22.59\00:45:25.57 "And the dragon was enraged... " He was wroth 00:45:25.81\00:45:28.39 the King James says... "with the woman and went to make war 00:45:28.59\00:45:33.01 with the remnant of her seed... " 00:45:33.21\00:45:37.06 Now notice this: "who keep the... " What? 00:45:37.26\00:45:39.83 "the commandments of God and have the... " What? 00:45:40.03\00:45:41.90 "the testimony of Jesus. " Again, where are you 00:45:42.20\00:45:44.92 on the landscape of history? 00:45:45.02\00:45:46.73 The law of God, the tables of stone, the Ten Commandments 00:45:47.23\00:45:50.27 pertain to what part of the sanctuary? 00:45:50.57\00:45:54.81 Are they out in the courtyard 00:45:55.01\00:45:56.68 tucked under the altar of brass? 00:45:56.89\00:45:58.67 No! They're in the Most Holy Place in the ark. 00:45:58.97\00:46:02.18 Do you remember where we were in the seven trumpets 00:46:02.52\00:46:05.77 as we came to the seventh? 00:46:05.87\00:46:07.31 "I saw the heavens opened 00:46:08.00\00:46:10.66 and the ark of His testament was seen in His temple. " 00:46:11.06\00:46:16.20 So the seven trumpets end and you're right there in the 00:46:16.51\00:46:18.55 Most Holy Place... Now watch this: 00:46:18.65\00:46:20.24 when you come to the end of the cosmic war vision 00:46:20.44\00:46:22.66 the law of God which has been in the ark - 00:46:22.76\00:46:26.09 right? - is now invoked as the Most Holy Place 00:46:26.29\00:46:30.33 symbol because John is following a pattern here. 00:46:30.53\00:46:32.49 A beautiful, beautiful artistic pattern 00:46:32.69\00:46:35.23 of communication. If you didn't use this symbolism 00:46:35.43\00:46:38.06 you'd have to have entire volumes to explain 00:46:38.26\00:46:41.06 what John is trying to give us here 00:46:41.16\00:46:42.65 in a series of trigger points of symbols. 00:46:42.95\00:46:44.83 It's brilliant! 00:46:45.03\00:46:46.40 And as we come to the end of the cosmic war vision, 00:46:46.60\00:46:50.10 wait a minute... Now the law, the Ten Commandments, 00:46:50.30\00:46:53.33 which are associated with the ark in the Most Holy Place 00:46:53.63\00:46:57.58 now that law shows up... watch this... 00:46:57.88\00:47:00.75 in the experience of a people. 00:47:00.95\00:47:05.57 Now you have the new covenant 00:47:05.77\00:47:09.20 of the law of God being written in the heart and in the mind 00:47:09.40\00:47:13.03 taking place. And this is perfectly logical. 00:47:13.23\00:47:15.43 in the trajectory that John has unfolded for us. 00:47:15.73\00:47:18.29 Because earlier in the cosmic war vision 00:47:19.14\00:47:21.78 what is the centerpiece of focus? 00:47:21.98\00:47:23.92 Jesus Christ incarnate and crucified. 00:47:24.22\00:47:27.75 That event 00:47:28.25\00:47:31.09 of the incarnation and crucifixion of Christ 00:47:31.29\00:47:34.66 constitutes precisely the revelation of God's love 00:47:34.96\00:47:40.21 that leads and escorts God's people into a new covenant 00:47:41.20\00:47:44.27 experience where the law of God is not externally imposed... 00:47:44.37\00:47:48.18 it's internally realized. 00:47:48.39\00:47:50.52 In other words, the law of God which symbolically is in the ark 00:47:50.72\00:47:54.85 that was all symbolic. 00:47:55.05\00:47:56.79 God's not interested in golden boxes and tables of stone. 00:47:57.19\00:48:00.56 That's all symbolic. That's all pointing to something else. 00:48:01.60\00:48:05.13 The Most Holy Place, the ark, the law 00:48:05.33\00:48:09.74 ultimately is to represent the human heart and mind 00:48:09.94\00:48:14.56 and the re-establishment of the Shekinah glory 00:48:14.77\00:48:17.72 in the soul temple, in the citadel of the human heart 00:48:17.92\00:48:21.34 and mind. Not in a room that is being carted around the desert 00:48:21.44\00:48:26.25 thousands of years ago. 00:48:26.55\00:48:28.90 That was all... THAT was pointing to THIS! 00:48:29.20\00:48:32.20 That was pointing to realities that God wants to achieve 00:48:32.50\00:48:36.67 in your heart and mine. 00:48:36.87\00:48:38.61 Writing His law of love in the inner fabric... 00:48:39.01\00:48:44.76 the tender inner fabric of human thoughts and feelings. 00:48:44.96\00:48:48.93 Bringing you and me to the point where Ellen White describes 00:48:49.43\00:48:52.03 the experience of this people when she says: 00:48:52.23\00:48:54.91 "When the impulse to help and bless others 00:48:55.31\00:49:00.56 springs constantly from within 00:49:00.76\00:49:03.79 then God's purpose for us is accomplished. " 00:49:03.99\00:49:06.70 In other words, the law of God is not an external code 00:49:07.10\00:49:11.12 to be imposed with manipulation and pressure 00:49:11.42\00:49:15.28 for outward compliance. The law of God is to be 00:49:15.48\00:49:18.31 inscribed in our very thought processes, 00:49:18.51\00:49:21.15 in our emotional make-up. It's to be written in our hearts 00:49:21.45\00:49:24.64 so that we are pleased to live in obedience to God's law. 00:49:24.85\00:49:30.10 Not because we have to but because we want to 00:49:30.30\00:49:33.28 because His law is in our hearts. 00:49:33.48\00:49:36.41 Now what we've seen here is the unfolding of a series 00:49:36.71\00:49:40.31 of prophetic historic periods of time. 00:49:40.41\00:49:45.08 And as this historic period is unfolded with a 00:49:45.38\00:49:50.32 repeat and enlarge dexterity... just back and forth, 00:49:50.52\00:49:53.71 back and forth replay. OK... here we are again. 00:49:53.91\00:49:56.12 OK, and this happening too and so is this. 00:49:56.32\00:49:58.56 We need to understand something: that we are living 00:49:58.76\00:50:02.70 at the very end - the fulcrum point - 00:50:02.90\00:50:07.68 of eternity on all of these prophetic lines. 00:50:07.98\00:50:11.57 I said to you earlier that there are 3 prophetic views 00:50:12.77\00:50:17.46 of interpretation. The Preterist view which 00:50:17.66\00:50:19.83 applies it all to the? 00:50:19.93\00:50:21.48 The Futurist view which puts it all in the? 00:50:21.88\00:50:24.03 The Historicist view that encompasses both the past and 00:50:24.43\00:50:28.62 the future... present as well. 00:50:28.82\00:50:30.98 But there's a fourth view that is totally unique to Adventists. 00:50:31.08\00:50:34.06 We made it up all by ourselves. 00:50:35.55\00:50:37.69 And the way we made it up is because and rightfully so 00:50:40.36\00:50:44.90 we're urgent for the time. No disrespect is meant. 00:50:45.11\00:50:48.44 But what we've done is we have looked at the prophecies 00:50:48.84\00:50:51.98 and we have lost our bearings on the Historicist plane 00:50:52.18\00:50:57.79 and we have begun to develop a hunger and a thirst 00:50:57.99\00:51:02.40 for what is being called "re-applications" 00:51:02.90\00:51:06.77 of these prophecies to the future. 00:51:06.97\00:51:09.53 And I'll tell you what the problem with that is 00:51:10.67\00:51:12.64 if it hasn't already dawned on you. It should just be clicking. 00:51:13.14\00:51:15.78 The Historicist interpretation 00:51:16.29\00:51:19.74 is the official established Adventist view. 00:51:19.94\00:51:23.59 Up until just not more than about 120 years ago it was 00:51:23.79\00:51:26.98 the official Protestant view. 00:51:27.18\00:51:28.74 Preterism and Futurism is a rather new phenomenon 00:51:28.94\00:51:32.77 in church history. These views were concocted, 00:51:32.92\00:51:37.86 both of them, by Jesuit priests in order to get the heat off 00:51:37.96\00:51:40.71 of the papacy in the Historicist interpretation. 00:51:40.81\00:51:43.93 I don't have time to say more about that. 00:51:44.13\00:51:46.18 But Adventists who are grounded historically in the 00:51:46.79\00:51:51.21 Historicist view of prophecy 00:51:51.32\00:51:52.79 not content to realize the urgency of the fact that we're 00:51:53.20\00:51:56.89 living right there between 6 and 7 and the world is about 00:51:56.99\00:52:00.11 to end, we've begun to back up and say: "Hey, let's take those 00:52:00.21\00:52:05.11 seven seals and put them in the future. 00:52:05.21\00:52:06.81 Let's take those seven trumpets and come up with a future 00:52:07.21\00:52:10.91 application. " Even "Let's take the time prophecies 00:52:11.01\00:52:14.06 of the 1,260-year prophecy of Daniel, the 1,290-year prophecy, 00:52:14.26\00:52:18.27 the 1,335-day prophecy and even the 2,300-day prophecy 00:52:18.37\00:52:21.98 and let's just find literal applications 00:52:22.18\00:52:25.53 that we can have here and now. 00:52:25.73\00:52:27.75 At the end of time we need new applications; 00:52:27.95\00:52:31.40 we need re-application. " This view - this fourth view 00:52:31.60\00:52:34.57 that is unique to Adventists - 00:52:34.77\00:52:36.10 is an effort to hold on to the Historicist view 00:52:36.30\00:52:39.14 'cause we feel like we need to, we have to 00:52:39.34\00:52:41.48 for a couple of reasons. One is because it's embedded 00:52:41.69\00:52:43.74 in the text. Number two, there would be no Adventism 00:52:43.84\00:52:46.25 without the Historicist view. The church would not have 00:52:46.36\00:52:49.16 emerged on the scene of human history 00:52:49.26\00:52:51.07 without the Historicist view of prophecy. 00:52:51.17\00:52:53.96 Number three, Ellen White very firmly 00:52:54.26\00:52:56.90 adheres to and articulates the Historicist view. 00:52:57.30\00:53:00.38 So we feel like we have to maintain the Historicist view. 00:53:00.68\00:53:03.33 So rather than be bold enough to just reject it 00:53:04.38\00:53:06.96 and say: "that's not true" which some have. 00:53:07.17\00:53:08.85 But they eventually just leave the church all together. 00:53:09.15\00:53:10.99 Rather than just say: "That's not true! 00:53:11.10\00:53:13.45 This is the true application. Seven seals, seven trumpets... 00:53:13.65\00:53:17.08 all this. It goes here at the end of time. " 00:53:17.18\00:53:18.69 Rather than have that boldness, language has been 00:53:18.89\00:53:22.34 devised and brought to bear upon it 00:53:22.54\00:53:25.66 to say: "We're going to re- apply. It's a re-application 00:53:25.86\00:53:29.99 of these. " "Oh, we affirm this - 00:53:30.19\00:53:32.97 the Historicist view. We're just giving a second application, 00:53:33.17\00:53:36.25 a dual application, a repeat application. " 00:53:36.35\00:53:39.48 But here's the problem. Here's the problem in the 00:53:39.68\00:53:41.17 3 minutes and 48 seconds that I have... 00:53:41.27\00:53:43.03 Here's the problem: 00:53:43.43\00:53:44.90 The Historicist view... listen carefully now... 00:53:46.33\00:53:49.58 already accounts for the entire span 00:53:49.98\00:53:55.58 of the historical prophetic timeline. 00:53:55.88\00:54:00.12 In other words, we're already between 00:54:01.40\00:54:06.52 six and seven on churches, seals, and trumpets. 00:54:06.72\00:54:10.31 To pick up the historically-fulfilled parts 00:54:10.71\00:54:13.96 back up and pull it all into the future 00:54:14.16\00:54:16.60 would give us an absolute nightmare 00:54:17.00\00:54:21.48 of interpretive logic that can't be sustained. 00:54:21.68\00:54:24.21 Because now to affirm Historicism 00:54:24.41\00:54:28.01 and to come up with new future applications 00:54:28.32\00:54:30.96 is simply to say that we have to unravel the idea 00:54:31.16\00:54:34.38 that we have a new seven seals, a new seven trumpets 00:54:34.58\00:54:38.12 that are unfolding during the Historicist unfolding 00:54:38.32\00:54:41.20 of number six and seven. 00:54:41.30\00:54:42.37 So number six and seven are being fulfilled 00:54:43.26\00:54:45.43 but now we have an overlay of the entire seven. 00:54:45.63\00:54:48.72 So in the interpretive logic 00:54:50.16\00:54:53.41 it's very confusing... it doesn't exist. 00:54:53.61\00:54:55.78 In other words, we don't need a re-application 00:54:56.09\00:55:01.42 of the seals, the trumpets, or the time prophecies. Why? 00:55:01.62\00:55:04.40 Why? Is it logical? Do you see it? 00:55:04.60\00:55:06.46 Why do we not need a reinterpretation for the future? 00:55:06.67\00:55:12.23 Because the Historicist interpretation already accounts 00:55:12.44\00:55:16.57 for the future inherent in its hermeneutic logic. 00:55:16.87\00:55:22.76 There's no reason to have another application. 00:55:22.96\00:55:26.48 But here's the bottom line: 00:55:26.98\00:55:29.40 it's not all about Preterism, Futurism, Historicism, 00:55:29.70\00:55:32.09 and re-application. Can't help but want to end with good news. 00:55:32.29\00:55:35.23 Every single prophecy invokes the Most Holy Place 00:55:35.84\00:55:39.36 at the end in Revelation. 00:55:39.56\00:55:41.02 Watch this. You come to the end of the book of Revelation 00:55:41.22\00:55:43.83 and with beautiful language, unimaginably beautiful language, 00:55:44.13\00:55:48.57 John says: "I saw a holy city, New Jerusalem, 00:55:48.81\00:55:51.52 and the angel that attended me told me 00:55:51.82\00:55:54.86 it's measurements. " And as the angel describes the measurements 00:55:55.06\00:55:59.48 of the Holy City... check this out... he's described 00:55:59.68\00:56:04.21 a geometric cube. There's only one other cube 00:56:04.41\00:56:08.98 in the Bible. It's the Most Holy Place 00:56:09.18\00:56:11.66 of the Old Testament sanctuary. 00:56:11.86\00:56:13.42 You have a small cube where the Shekinah glory was 00:56:13.92\00:56:17.15 and then you have the big cube which is the cubed city 00:56:17.45\00:56:20.84 if you will... the New Jerusalem. 00:56:20.94\00:56:22.79 And the whole story comes to a beautiful, artistic 00:56:23.09\00:56:27.14 resolving logic with God's people all finding themselves 00:56:27.24\00:56:32.35 in the New Jerusalem 00:56:32.75\00:56:36.11 and Revelation ends by telling us: "Now God 00:56:36.41\00:56:39.58 is with His people. They're with Him. 00:56:39.88\00:56:43.77 There's no need for a temple any more. 00:56:43.97\00:56:45.92 There's no need for the light of the sun 00:56:46.22\00:56:48.34 for the Lord God is the light. " 00:56:48.64\00:56:50.65 And we are forever in intimate Most Holy Place 00:56:50.75\00:56:55.12 communion with the most beautiful person in all the 00:56:55.32\00:56:58.23 universe: God Almighty Himself. 00:56:58.33\00:57:01.53 And as we take rest and joy and peace 00:57:01.83\00:57:05.46 in that eternal fellowship we realize at that point 00:57:05.76\00:57:10.41 that all along it was about the restoration 00:57:10.81\00:57:14.63 of this communion with God. 00:57:14.93\00:57:17.40 All the details of the prophetic lines were 00:57:17.81\00:57:21.16 all along pointing to this ultimate end 00:57:21.36\00:57:25.39 the Shekinah glory and you and I face to face. 00:57:25.69\00:57:29.61 Please pray with me. Father in heaven, 00:57:29.91\00:57:31.93 thank you for the clarity of Your Word. 00:57:32.23\00:57:34.85 May we hold fast to what this Word has conveyed to us. 00:57:35.05\00:57:40.15 Please, Lord, help us to re-discover the beauty 00:57:40.65\00:57:44.19 and power of the Historicist view of prophecy 00:57:44.29\00:57:46.59 and the inherent logic that it holds 00:57:46.79\00:57:51.34 to tell us where we are in the stream of time. 00:57:51.54\00:57:54.28 In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:57:54.49\00:57:57.67
