All right, not only are we redeemed by Jesus 00:00:10.34\00:00:14.38 but His blood also has a powerful part in our life, 00:00:14.41\00:00:18.28 does it not? 00:00:18.31\00:00:19.65 So often we talk about the blood of Christ 00:00:19.68\00:00:21.42 and how it covers our sins, how it makes us a new creature, 00:00:21.45\00:00:24.29 how it washes us clean. 00:00:24.32\00:00:26.15 And there is a powerful verse that talks about that as well 00:00:26.19\00:00:28.79 in Revelation 12:11. 00:00:28.82\00:00:30.73 And as a Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:30.76\00:00:32.09 this verse should be very common to us. 00:00:32.13\00:00:34.16 It says, "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb 00:00:34.20\00:00:38.77 and by the word of their testimony, 00:00:38.80\00:00:40.44 and they did not love their lives to the death." 00:00:40.47\00:00:44.21 How many of you want to be able to say that you are not afraid 00:00:44.24\00:00:46.88 to give up your life for Christ, 00:00:46.91\00:00:48.38 because of what He gave for you. 00:00:48.41\00:00:50.48 I know that I do. 00:00:50.51\00:00:51.85 So let's stand together, as we sing this song, 00:00:51.88\00:00:54.58 "Power in the Blood." 00:00:54.62\00:00:56.28 Would you be free from the burden of sin? 00:01:14.60\00:01:18.31 There's pow'r in the blood, pow'r in the blood 00:01:18.34\00:01:22.64 Would you o'er evil a victory win? 00:01:22.68\00:01:26.55 There's wonderful pow'r in the blood 00:01:26.58\00:01:29.92 There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working pow'r 00:01:29.95\00:01:34.69 In the blood of the Lamb 00:01:34.72\00:01:39.06 There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working pow'r 00:01:39.09\00:01:43.37 In the precious blood of the Lamb 00:01:43.40\00:01:49.00 Would you be free from your passion and pride? 00:01:49.04\00:01:52.81 There's power in the blood, pow'r in the blood 00:01:52.84\00:01:57.35 Come for a cleansing to Calvary's tide 00:01:57.38\00:02:01.52 There's wonderful pow'r in the blood 00:02:01.55\00:02:05.09 There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working power 00:02:05.12\00:02:10.23 In the blood of the Lamb 00:02:10.26\00:02:14.63 There is pow'r, pow'r, wonder-working pow'r 00:02:14.66\00:02:19.20 In the precious blood of the Lamb 00:02:19.23\00:02:24.91 Would you do service for Jesus your King? Well, that's much better. 00:15:29.59\00:15:33.63 It's good to see you all. 00:15:33.66\00:15:35.83 Have you had a good day today? 00:15:35.86\00:15:37.60 Yes. 00:15:37.63\00:15:38.97 I was tremendously blessed by the message this morning. 00:15:39.00\00:15:41.57 We too. 00:15:41.60\00:15:42.94 What a blessing, 00:15:42.97\00:15:44.31 let's never forget the reason for our existence. 00:15:44.34\00:15:48.04 If we do, we have no reason to exist. 00:15:48.08\00:15:52.61 I'd like to have a word of prayer, 00:15:52.65\00:15:53.98 and then I want to make a clarification. 00:15:54.02\00:15:57.49 There's been a little rumor running around on cyberspace, 00:15:57.52\00:16:02.16 and I want to clear that up before we open God's word, 00:16:02.19\00:16:05.56 but let's have a word of prayer first. 00:16:05.59\00:16:07.83 Father in heaven, 00:16:07.86\00:16:09.20 we thank You for the privilege of being here at this evening. 00:16:09.23\00:16:12.63 We thank You, this has been a high day, 00:16:12.67\00:16:15.30 a high Sabbath filled with spiritual blessings. 00:16:15.34\00:16:19.81 Thank You Father, thank You for being a wonderful God. 00:16:19.84\00:16:24.15 Thank You for Your Son Jesus. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit. 00:16:24.18\00:16:29.22 Father we ask that as we open Your Word 00:16:29.25\00:16:31.72 that You will be with us 00:16:31.75\00:16:33.86 through the ministration of the spirit of the angels. 00:16:33.89\00:16:36.86 Open minds and hearts 00:16:36.89\00:16:39.49 and help us Lord to make a decision 00:16:39.53\00:16:41.56 to be faithful to You till the heavens fall. 00:16:41.60\00:16:44.73 Thank You for hearing our prayer, 00:16:44.77\00:16:47.44 for we ask it in the precious name of Jesus, 00:16:47.47\00:16:50.44 amen. 00:16:50.47\00:16:51.81 Amen. 00:16:51.84\00:16:54.81 It seems like because last evening 00:16:54.84\00:16:57.35 I spoke about the relationship between the father and the son, 00:16:57.38\00:17:04.09 that there have been some rumors running around 00:17:04.12\00:17:06.29 that pastor Bohr is anti-Trinitarian. 00:17:06.32\00:17:12.53 The reason I spoke about 00:17:12.56\00:17:14.03 the father and the son last night 00:17:14.06\00:17:15.40 is because that was the theme that I prepared, 00:17:15.43\00:17:19.83 but I want to make it absolutely clear 00:17:19.87\00:17:23.17 that the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy both teach 00:17:23.20\00:17:26.47 that there are three distinct persons in the Godhead. 00:17:26.51\00:17:30.31 Amen. 00:17:30.35\00:17:31.68 The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. 00:17:31.71\00:17:34.38 And I want to go on the record, 00:17:34.42\00:17:36.89 so that probably some of the naysayers will say, 00:17:36.92\00:17:40.99 "Well, he said so but he doesn't." 00:17:41.02\00:17:46.26 I'd like to read just one statement 00:17:46.29\00:17:47.76 from Ellen White on this particular topic, 00:17:47.80\00:17:51.53 it's from document called Bible Training School, 00:17:51.57\00:17:55.14 March 1, 1906. 00:17:55.17\00:17:59.14 It's so clear, we can't misunderstand it. 00:17:59.17\00:18:03.08 She says, "There are three living persons 00:18:03.11\00:18:07.98 of the heavenly trio." 00:18:08.02\00:18:10.79 So if you didn't get three, you get trio. 00:18:10.82\00:18:15.29 And then incase you didn't get that, 00:18:15.32\00:18:17.39 she says, "In the name of these three powers, 00:18:17.43\00:18:21.86 the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. 00:18:21.90\00:18:27.94 Those who receive Christ in living faith are baptized, 00:18:27.97\00:18:31.67 and these powers will cooperate 00:18:31.71\00:18:33.44 with the obedient subjects of heaven 00:18:33.48\00:18:35.74 in their efforts to live the new life in Christ." 00:18:35.78\00:18:40.05 So three are three distinct persons. 00:18:40.08\00:18:43.02 One in the sense of unity, consubstantial and eternal. 00:18:43.05\00:18:49.09 If you want to know 00:18:52.19\00:18:54.33 a little bit more about the Godhead, 00:18:54.36\00:18:57.70 I did a series a few years ago called Revisiting the Godhead. 00:18:57.73\00:19:02.94 There's four presentations 00:19:02.97\00:19:05.47 and I deal with this issue of the Godhead 00:19:05.51\00:19:08.34 that has become a conflictive subject 00:19:08.38\00:19:11.18 in the Adventist church these days. 00:19:11.21\00:19:13.58 All kinds of ideas going around about the Godhead. 00:19:13.62\00:19:17.49 We need to be sure about what we believe. 00:19:17.52\00:19:20.69 We need to be sure 00:19:20.72\00:19:22.62 that there are three living persons 00:19:22.66\00:19:25.89 in the heavenly trio 00:19:25.93\00:19:27.83 that are all cooperating for our salvation. 00:19:27.86\00:19:31.67 I will be at the Secrets Unsealed Booth this evening. 00:19:31.70\00:19:35.00 I'd like to meet many of you. 00:19:35.04\00:19:37.31 So if you want to come to the exhibit area, 00:19:37.34\00:19:40.28 I'll be looking forward to be able to talk with you 00:19:40.31\00:19:44.41 and share with you during the time 00:19:44.45\00:19:46.51 that the booths are open. 00:19:46.55\00:19:50.79 Now we will translation into our study for this evening. 00:19:50.82\00:19:56.12 The Apostle Paul is known as the great apostle 00:19:56.16\00:20:02.70 of grace and faith, 00:20:02.73\00:20:07.17 but what is frequently overlooked 00:20:07.20\00:20:10.57 is that Paul is also the great apostle 00:20:10.61\00:20:13.81 of good works. 00:20:13.84\00:20:17.25 In the epistles of Romans and Galatians 00:20:17.28\00:20:21.65 where the Apostle Paul deals more specifically 00:20:21.68\00:20:26.55 with the issue of righteousness by faith. 00:20:26.59\00:20:30.43 The apostle in the first half of those books 00:20:30.46\00:20:33.29 presents the theology of justification by faith. 00:20:33.33\00:20:38.43 And in the last half of those books, 00:20:38.47\00:20:41.24 he presents how this concept of righteousness 00:20:41.27\00:20:46.27 by faith should impact our personal individual lives. 00:20:46.31\00:20:52.88 And so for example, 00:20:52.91\00:20:54.25 if you go to the Book of Romans, 00:20:54.28\00:20:55.62 you will find that Romans 13:11 the Apostle Paul deals 00:20:55.65\00:20:58.59 with the theology of righteousness by faith 00:20:58.62\00:21:01.92 but in chapters 12-16, 00:21:01.96\00:21:04.16 he deals with how this works out practically 00:21:04.19\00:21:06.86 on everyday lives. 00:21:06.90\00:21:09.30 In the Book of Galatians, 00:21:09.33\00:21:10.67 he deals with the theology of justification by faith 00:21:10.70\00:21:14.64 in chapters 1-4. 00:21:14.67\00:21:16.84 And then in chapters 5 and 6, 00:21:16.87\00:21:18.51 he deals with how this should impact our personal walk, 00:21:18.54\00:21:24.75 in our daily walk with Jesus. 00:21:24.78\00:21:26.92 So Paul was not only a strong advocate 00:21:26.95\00:21:29.42 of righteousness by faith, 00:21:29.45\00:21:31.12 he was also a strong advocate of the importance of good works 00:21:31.15\00:21:35.96 that flow from a faith relationship with Christ. 00:21:35.99\00:21:41.66 But I don't want to study this afternoon 00:21:41.70\00:21:43.97 from Romans or Galatians. 00:21:44.00\00:21:46.74 I would like us to go to a passage 00:21:46.77\00:21:48.80 that we find in the Book of Titus 2, 00:21:48.84\00:21:54.34 and I'm going to begin by reading verses 1-10. 00:21:54.38\00:21:58.48 Titus 2:1-10 and we're gonna find here 00:21:58.51\00:22:03.89 that the Apostle Paul address five groups. 00:22:03.92\00:22:09.92 First of all he is going to speak about aged men, 00:22:09.96\00:22:13.90 that's in verse 2. 00:22:13.93\00:22:16.10 In verse 3, he has got to speak about aged women. 00:22:16.13\00:22:20.77 In verses 4 and 5, 00:22:20.80\00:22:22.24 he is going to address young women. 00:22:22.27\00:22:25.97 In verse 6, he is going to address young men, 00:22:26.01\00:22:30.55 and in verse 9, 00:22:30.58\00:22:33.18 he is going to deal with servants. 00:22:33.21\00:22:39.52 So let's read that passage 00:22:39.55\00:22:41.36 and there are certain words that I'm going to emphasize. 00:22:41.39\00:22:43.89 You're going to notice that 00:22:43.93\00:22:45.29 most of what the Apostle Paul says here is behavioral. 00:22:45.33\00:22:49.70 It has to do with conduct. 00:22:49.73\00:22:53.34 I begin reading at verse 1, 00:22:53.37\00:22:56.20 "But as for you, speak the things 00:22:56.24\00:22:58.37 which are proper for sound doctrine 00:22:58.41\00:23:02.54 that the older men..." 00:23:02.58\00:23:04.25 Here's the first group. 00:23:04.28\00:23:05.61 "That the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, 00:23:05.65\00:23:11.99 sound in the faith, in love, in patience." 00:23:12.02\00:23:18.66 Then verse 3, he goes onto the older women. 00:23:18.69\00:23:21.86 "The older women likewise, 00:23:21.90\00:23:23.60 that they be reverent in behavior, 00:23:23.63\00:23:27.90 not slanderers, not given to much wine, 00:23:27.94\00:23:32.77 teachers of good things." 00:23:32.81\00:23:35.44 And now comes the next group. 00:23:35.48\00:23:37.45 "That they, that is that the older women 00:23:37.48\00:23:39.51 may admonish the young women to love their husbands, 00:23:39.55\00:23:44.99 to love their children, to be discreet, 00:23:45.02\00:23:49.52 chaste, homemakers, good, 00:23:49.56\00:23:54.40 obedient to their own husbands, 00:23:54.43\00:23:57.07 that the word of God may not be blasphemed." 00:23:57.10\00:24:00.97 And now he speaks to the young men, verse 6, 00:24:01.00\00:24:04.44 "Likewise, exhort the young men 00:24:04.47\00:24:07.04 to be sober minded in all things 00:24:07.08\00:24:10.08 showing yourself to be a pattern of good works. 00:24:10.11\00:24:13.88 In doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 00:24:13.92\00:24:20.42 sound speech that cannot be condemned, 00:24:20.46\00:24:23.93 that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, 00:24:23.96\00:24:27.66 having nothing evil to say of you." 00:24:27.70\00:24:31.47 And then he exhort bondservants, 00:24:31.50\00:24:33.60 " Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, 00:24:33.64\00:24:37.11 to be well pleasing in all things, 00:24:37.14\00:24:40.14 not answering back, not pilfering, 00:24:40.18\00:24:44.01 but showing all good fidelity, 00:24:44.05\00:24:47.12 that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior 00:24:47.15\00:24:50.59 in all things." 00:24:50.62\00:24:51.95 Did you notice the list of moral qualities 00:24:51.99\00:24:54.36 in this passage? 00:24:54.39\00:24:56.86 Certainly the Apostle Paul was concerned about behavior, 00:24:56.89\00:25:00.83 he was concerned about conduct 00:25:00.86\00:25:03.67 and not only a theoretical idea of justification by faith, 00:25:03.70\00:25:09.07 which is generally held these days 00:25:09.10\00:25:11.24 in the Christian world. 00:25:11.27\00:25:14.11 Now the passage 00:25:14.14\00:25:15.48 that I especially want us to focus on are the verses 00:25:15.51\00:25:19.31 that come immediately after these 10 verses 00:25:19.35\00:25:22.78 that we have read. 00:25:22.82\00:25:25.12 We're going to have a textual sermon this evening. 00:25:25.15\00:25:29.46 Most of the sermons that had been presented 00:25:29.49\00:25:31.56 are expository sermons, 00:25:31.59\00:25:34.50 but we're gonna study a passage, 00:25:34.53\00:25:36.87 phrase by phrase this evening 00:25:36.90\00:25:39.93 and that passage is Titus 2:11-14. 00:25:39.97\00:25:45.94 And I want to read the passage first 00:25:45.97\00:25:47.94 and then we're going to study it in more detail. 00:25:47.98\00:25:53.52 Immediately after speaking to these groups, 00:25:53.55\00:25:56.99 the Apostle Paul says or writes, 00:25:57.02\00:26:00.56 "For the grace of God 00:26:00.59\00:26:03.29 that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 00:26:03.32\00:26:09.70 teaching us that denying ungodliness 00:26:09.73\00:26:14.94 and worldly lusts. 00:26:14.97\00:26:17.21 We should live soberly, righteously, 00:26:17.24\00:26:23.04 and godly in this present age, 00:26:23.08\00:26:26.65 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing 00:26:26.68\00:26:31.82 of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 00:26:31.85\00:26:35.49 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us 00:26:35.52\00:26:39.43 from every lawless deed 00:26:39.46\00:26:42.16 and purify for Himself His own special people, 00:26:42.20\00:26:47.04 zealous for good works." 00:26:47.07\00:26:51.94 Now let's analyze this passage. 00:26:51.97\00:26:56.41 Verse 11, 00:26:56.44\00:26:59.01 "For the grace of God that brings salvation 00:26:59.05\00:27:02.12 has appeared to all men." 00:27:02.15\00:27:06.82 The tense of the verb appeared is in the past. 00:27:06.86\00:27:11.39 This is something that occurred in the past. 00:27:11.43\00:27:15.26 The grace of God appeared in the past 00:27:15.30\00:27:19.60 and what do we mean by grace? 00:27:19.63\00:27:22.14 Grace is unmerited favor. 00:27:22.17\00:27:25.47 Grace means that Jesus came to this earth 00:27:25.51\00:27:30.71 and through His work, 00:27:30.75\00:27:32.75 He provided the means for our salvation. 00:27:32.78\00:27:37.55 The Apostle Paul said, "For by grace are you saved, 00:27:37.59\00:27:40.86 through faith, that not of yourselves: 00:27:40.89\00:27:44.23 it is the gift of God. 00:27:44.26\00:27:45.59 Not by works, lest any man should boast." 00:27:45.63\00:27:49.00 And so the Apostle Paul begins by appealing to the past, 00:27:49.03\00:27:52.00 he says the grace of God has appeared for salvation. 00:27:52.03\00:27:57.54 That occurred as a result of the work of Jesus Christ 00:27:57.57\00:28:01.71 while He was on this earth. 00:28:01.74\00:28:04.91 But the Apostle Paul doesn't stop there. 00:28:04.95\00:28:08.55 Notice what he continue saying in verse 12. 00:28:08.58\00:28:13.32 Grace teaches us something. 00:28:13.36\00:28:19.23 It says in verse 12, teaching us. 00:28:19.26\00:28:25.47 Now let me say something about that verb teaching. 00:28:25.50\00:28:30.91 It is translated in various ways. 00:28:30.94\00:28:34.01 It is translated training, educating 00:28:34.04\00:28:39.71 or disciplining. 00:28:39.75\00:28:42.52 In other words, grace teaches 00:28:42.55\00:28:46.86 and it is in a present progressive tense, 00:28:46.89\00:28:50.86 which means that grace is continually teaching. 00:28:50.89\00:28:56.70 Grace teach us something, 00:28:56.73\00:28:59.37 continually grace teach us something. 00:28:59.40\00:29:02.64 The fact that Jesus came, He lived for us, 00:29:02.67\00:29:05.34 He died for us, 00:29:05.37\00:29:06.71 He accomplished the necessary means for salvation 00:29:06.74\00:29:09.98 that teaches us, is teaching us something. 00:29:10.01\00:29:14.68 And the question is, what is it teaching us? 00:29:14.72\00:29:18.39 What does grace teach us? 00:29:18.42\00:29:22.49 Well, verse 12 continues saying, 00:29:22.52\00:29:26.09 "Teaching us 00:29:26.13\00:29:28.86 that denying ungodliness 00:29:28.90\00:29:34.64 and worldly lusts..." 00:29:34.67\00:29:36.87 What does grace teach us? 00:29:36.91\00:29:39.41 It teaches us to deny ungodliness 00:29:39.44\00:29:42.71 and worldly lusts. 00:29:42.74\00:29:44.08 Once again, the word denying is in a progressive tense, 00:29:44.11\00:29:50.09 which means continually denying ungodliness 00:29:50.12\00:29:56.32 and worldly lusts. 00:29:56.36\00:29:58.23 It is a present participle. 00:29:58.26\00:29:59.69 It means that continually we are to deny ungodliness 00:29:59.73\00:30:06.53 and worldly lusts. 00:30:06.57\00:30:09.87 Now what is meant by ungodliness? 00:30:09.90\00:30:13.74 I think the best passage that we can quote 00:30:13.78\00:30:18.28 to understand what ungodliness is, 00:30:18.31\00:30:21.35 is found in Jude 14 and 15. 00:30:21.38\00:30:25.42 Jude 14 and 15. 00:30:25.45\00:30:28.96 Here it is speaking about Enoch, 00:30:28.99\00:30:32.39 who lived in one of the worst periods 00:30:32.43\00:30:35.93 of history. 00:30:35.96\00:30:38.20 He lived before the flood, 00:30:38.23\00:30:39.57 when the world was really going downhill in a hurry. 00:30:39.60\00:30:43.61 And I want you to notice 00:30:43.64\00:30:44.97 that this word ungodly is used four times. 00:30:45.01\00:30:50.55 It says there in Jude 14, 00:30:50.58\00:30:53.31 "Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, 00:30:53.35\00:30:57.42 prophesied about these men also, saying, 00:30:57.45\00:31:01.62 'Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 00:31:01.66\00:31:06.46 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are...'" 00:31:06.49\00:31:11.83 What? 00:31:11.87\00:31:13.54 "Ungodly among them 00:31:13.57\00:31:16.87 of all their ungodly deeds 00:31:16.91\00:31:21.74 which they have committed in an ungodly way, 00:31:21.78\00:31:26.41 and of all the harsh things 00:31:26.45\00:31:27.95 which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him." 00:31:27.98\00:31:32.49 Notice that the word ungodly has to do with deeds, 00:31:32.52\00:31:36.86 it has to do with our way, which has, 00:31:36.89\00:31:39.13 which deals with behavior 00:31:39.16\00:31:41.30 and it has to do with what we do 00:31:41.33\00:31:45.87 with our conduct. 00:31:45.90\00:31:48.17 So the Apostle Paul is telling us here. 00:31:48.20\00:31:50.71 He is saying, denying continually... 00:31:50.74\00:31:54.71 ungodliness. 00:31:58.15\00:32:01.18 But he not only says we're supposed to deny ungodliness 00:32:01.22\00:32:04.85 on a continuing basis. 00:32:04.89\00:32:07.66 He also says that we are to not deny worldly lusts. 00:32:07.69\00:32:13.03 Now what does the Apostle Paul mean by worldly lust. 00:32:13.06\00:32:16.06 You know, this is the great apostle of grace, 00:32:16.10\00:32:18.77 the great apostle of righteousness by faith. 00:32:18.80\00:32:22.54 And yet he is not casting behavior aside. 00:32:22.57\00:32:27.58 He is emphasizing the necessity of a change in the life. 00:32:27.61\00:32:33.62 What is meant by worldly lust? 00:32:33.65\00:32:37.42 Well, that word lust is used in Galatians 5:21-24. 00:32:37.45\00:32:42.96 Let's read that passage Galatians 5:21-24, 00:32:42.99\00:32:48.56 here the Apostle Paul in the practical section 00:32:48.60\00:32:52.13 of his book of Galatians says, "I say then walk in the Spirit, 00:32:52.17\00:32:58.37 and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh..." 00:32:58.41\00:33:02.61 There's the identical word. 00:33:02.64\00:33:04.81 "For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, 00:33:04.85\00:33:07.82 and the Spirit against the flesh, 00:33:07.85\00:33:10.32 and these are contrary to one another, 00:33:10.35\00:33:12.65 so that you do not do the things that you wish." 00:33:12.69\00:33:17.86 Now the works of the flesh are evident 00:33:17.89\00:33:20.46 and now comes the list 00:33:20.50\00:33:21.83 of what these sinful lusts are." 00:33:21.86\00:33:28.20 Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 00:33:28.24\00:33:34.18 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, 00:33:34.21\00:33:39.51 outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, 00:33:39.55\00:33:43.72 heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries." 00:33:43.75\00:33:48.72 And it's not a complete list because he says, 00:33:48.76\00:33:51.09 "And the like, of which I tell you beforehand, 00:33:51.13\00:33:55.83 just as I also told you in time past, 00:33:55.86\00:33:58.60 that those who practice such things 00:33:58.63\00:34:01.34 will not inherit the kingdom of God. 00:34:01.37\00:34:05.07 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh 00:34:05.11\00:34:11.08 with its passions and its desires..." 00:34:11.11\00:34:13.42 The word desire is there the same word, lusts. 00:34:13.45\00:34:18.22 So the Apostle Paul is telling us here 00:34:18.25\00:34:20.56 that we must deny ungodliness 00:34:20.59\00:34:23.86 and fleshly lust or worldly lusts. 00:34:23.89\00:34:27.96 You see grace teaches us something very important. 00:34:28.00\00:34:32.33 It teaches us 00:34:32.37\00:34:34.00 that we are to reject these negative qualities, 00:34:34.04\00:34:37.57 ungodliness and worldly lusts 00:34:37.61\00:34:41.08 but grace not only teaches us what we're not supposed to do. 00:34:41.11\00:34:45.75 Grace also teaches us what we're supposed to do 00:34:45.78\00:34:49.88 and so he continue saying, 00:34:49.92\00:34:52.89 "That denying ungodliness and worldly lusts we should..." 00:34:52.92\00:34:58.59 What? 00:34:58.63\00:35:00.33 Live. How? 00:35:00.36\00:35:04.73 "Soberly, righteously and godly 00:35:04.77\00:35:11.44 in this present age." 00:35:11.47\00:35:17.95 So Paul says, "Deny one thing and live another. 00:35:17.98\00:35:21.98 Deny ungodliness and worldly lust 00:35:22.02\00:35:24.85 and live righteously, soberly and godly 00:35:24.89\00:35:31.83 in this present age." 00:35:31.86\00:35:34.33 Does the theology of the Apostle Paul 00:35:34.36\00:35:38.33 have anything to say 00:35:38.37\00:35:39.73 about our conduct and our behavior? 00:35:39.77\00:35:45.84 It most certainly does. 00:35:45.87\00:35:48.88 But now we come to a future focus. 00:35:48.91\00:35:52.05 The Apostle Paul has said, 00:35:52.08\00:35:53.88 "The grace of God which bring salvation has appeared, 00:35:53.92\00:35:56.42 that's the work that Jesus performed, 00:35:56.45\00:35:58.99 but this is teaching us continually 00:35:59.02\00:36:02.39 that we should be denying..." 00:36:02.42\00:36:04.79 Once again a continual tense, 00:36:04.83\00:36:06.90 "That we should be denying ungodliness 00:36:06.93\00:36:09.33 and worldly lusts and we should live soberly, 00:36:09.36\00:36:15.07 righteously and godly in this present age." 00:36:15.10\00:36:19.14 But there's a reason for that. 00:36:19.17\00:36:22.74 And that reason is found in verse 13. 00:36:22.78\00:36:27.08 Now the Apostle Paul is gonna go to the future, 00:36:27.12\00:36:29.08 he's already talked about salvation in the past, 00:36:29.12\00:36:31.55 he's saying what we should be doing in the present 00:36:31.59\00:36:33.79 but with a view to what's something that's gonna happen, 00:36:33.82\00:36:37.79 very significant. 00:36:37.83\00:36:39.29 Verse 13, "Looking for..." 00:36:39.33\00:36:43.03 Once again a continuous tense, "Looking for..." 00:36:43.06\00:36:47.14 What? 00:36:47.17\00:36:49.24 "The blessed hope, 00:36:49.27\00:36:51.37 and glorious appearing of our great God 00:36:51.41\00:36:54.48 and Savior Jesus Christ." 00:36:54.51\00:36:57.28 Amen! 00:36:57.31\00:36:58.98 That expression looking for... 00:36:59.01\00:37:02.88 it's an interesting expression, it's used for example for Anna, 00:37:02.92\00:37:07.82 who was looking 00:37:07.86\00:37:09.69 for the redemption of Jerusalem. 00:37:09.72\00:37:12.09 She was longing for it in other words. 00:37:12.13\00:37:15.10 It's used of Simeon, who was longing 00:37:15.13\00:37:19.83 for the consolation of Israel to come. 00:37:19.87\00:37:23.41 It's used of Joseph of Arimathea, 00:37:23.44\00:37:26.17 who waited or longed for the kingdom of God. 00:37:26.21\00:37:29.74 In other words, this is an only just simply sitting down 00:37:29.78\00:37:32.11 like, "Oh, I'll wait." 00:37:32.15\00:37:34.42 No, it is a longing for something 00:37:34.45\00:37:38.85 and what is it that we have to long for, 00:37:38.89\00:37:42.29 longing for? 00:37:42.32\00:37:44.16 "The blessed hope, and glorious appearing 00:37:44.19\00:37:47.46 of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ." 00:37:47.50\00:37:52.33 The word blessed by the way is the same word 00:37:52.37\00:37:54.24 that is used in the beatitudes. 00:37:54.27\00:37:57.67 Sometimes in the New Testament, it's translated happy. 00:37:57.71\00:38:01.88 So this would be the happy hope, 00:38:01.91\00:38:05.75 the hope of the second coming of Christ. 00:38:05.78\00:38:08.95 So Paul has taken us from the past what Jesus did, 00:38:08.98\00:38:12.65 grace saved us without any work on our part 00:38:12.69\00:38:16.89 and then he says we should renounce ungodliness 00:38:16.93\00:38:22.00 and worldly lust, we should live soberly 00:38:22.03\00:38:24.90 and righteously in this present age, 00:38:24.93\00:38:27.14 with a view of something very significant 00:38:27.17\00:38:30.11 that's gonna happen 00:38:30.14\00:38:31.47 and then he is longing for the coming 00:38:31.51\00:38:34.48 of that blessed hope of Jesus Christ. 00:38:34.51\00:38:40.18 Now you say, how can we be sure 00:38:40.22\00:38:43.95 that hope will be materialized? 00:38:43.99\00:38:48.09 For two reasons. 00:38:48.12\00:38:50.76 Reason Number one is because Jesus promised it, 00:38:50.79\00:38:54.20 is that a good reason? 00:38:54.23\00:38:55.86 The word of God states it. 00:38:55.90\00:38:58.30 Jesus said, "Let not your hearts be troubled. 00:38:58.33\00:39:01.54 You believe in God, believe also in Me. 00:39:01.57\00:39:05.27 In my Father's house are many mansions..." 00:39:05.31\00:39:09.18 Notice Jesus didn't say, 00:39:09.21\00:39:11.41 I'm going to heaven to build mansions." 00:39:11.45\00:39:12.98 He says, when he said it, he said, 00:39:13.01\00:39:14.48 "There are many mansions." 00:39:14.52\00:39:18.15 Jesus does not need 2,000 years to build mansions. 00:39:18.19\00:39:24.23 "In my Father's house are many mansions: 00:39:24.26\00:39:28.26 if it were not so, I would have told you..." 00:39:28.30\00:39:30.20 Then he says, "I go to prepare a place for you." 00:39:30.23\00:39:34.04 And, you know, usually we think of that 00:39:34.07\00:39:36.20 as Jesus going to heaven 00:39:36.24\00:39:37.61 to make it real nice pretty place for us to go to. 00:39:37.64\00:39:40.91 I'm not gonna say that we're not gonna have a pretty place 00:39:40.94\00:39:43.38 but there is more involved here. 00:39:43.41\00:39:46.88 You see when Jesus says, 00:39:46.92\00:39:48.72 "I go to prepare a place for you." 00:39:48.75\00:39:51.52 The way in which he prepares that place for us 00:39:51.55\00:39:54.66 is through the work that he performs 00:39:54.69\00:39:56.73 in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:39:56.76\00:39:59.16 It's through His work in the holy 00:39:59.19\00:40:00.86 and the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary 00:40:00.90\00:40:03.77 as we heard about this morning. 00:40:03.80\00:40:06.63 So that's how He prepares the place. 00:40:06.67\00:40:10.07 He went to heaven to prepare the place 00:40:10.11\00:40:12.01 through His work in the sanctuary 00:40:12.04\00:40:14.04 and then He says, 00:40:14.08\00:40:16.08 after He has prepared the place, 00:40:16.11\00:40:17.81 He says, "I will come again." 00:40:17.85\00:40:23.15 You can take it to the bank 00:40:23.18\00:40:25.62 because Jesus said He will come again. 00:40:25.65\00:40:28.96 So we can long for that hope 00:40:28.99\00:40:31.59 because we know they'll rest upon his word. 00:40:31.63\00:40:35.73 You know, the hope of the second coming 00:40:35.76\00:40:37.20 is not like saying, "Well, I hope so." 00:40:37.23\00:40:40.80 No, it's solidly based on what Jesus said, 00:40:40.84\00:40:46.64 but there is another reason why we can be certain 00:40:46.68\00:40:49.31 and that is that Jesus has given us a down payment. 00:40:49.34\00:40:53.35 Amen. 00:40:53.38\00:40:55.12 And he is not about to lose his security deposit. 00:40:55.15\00:41:00.66 Notice Ephesians 1:13-14. 00:41:00.69\00:41:04.19 Ephesians 1:13-14, 00:41:04.23\00:41:07.86 you see Jesus has not only promised to come again, 00:41:07.90\00:41:10.53 He has given us a down payment to prove that He is, 00:41:10.57\00:41:15.10 it says in Ephesians 1:13-14, 00:41:15.14\00:41:18.91 "In him..." 00:41:18.94\00:41:20.28 That is in Jesus, "you also trusted, 00:41:20.31\00:41:23.01 after you heard the word of truth, 00:41:23.04\00:41:25.18 the gospel of your salvation. 00:41:25.21\00:41:27.88 In whom also having believed, you were sealed..." 00:41:27.92\00:41:31.69 with what? "As a guarantee." 00:42:28.98\00:42:34.35 So we not only have Christ promise, 00:42:34.38\00:42:36.75 His word that He is coming again 00:42:36.79\00:42:38.95 but He's proven it by giving us the down payment, 00:42:38.99\00:42:42.09 the down payment of His Holy Spirit. 00:42:42.12\00:42:45.29 Praise the Lord. 00:42:45.33\00:42:47.90 Now let's go for a moment before going on to verse 14. 00:42:47.93\00:42:52.63 Go to another passage in Titus, Titus 3:4-7. 00:42:52.67\00:42:57.77 Titus 3:4-7, notice once again we have this theme of the past, 00:42:57.81\00:43:03.11 the present and the future. 00:43:03.14\00:43:05.71 Time and again in the writings of the Apostle Paul, 00:43:05.75\00:43:08.02 you know, you ask Christian, you'll say, well, you know, 00:43:08.05\00:43:13.76 how the salvation work? 00:43:13.79\00:43:15.86 Is salvation once for all thing? 00:43:15.89\00:43:17.59 They'll say, "Oh, yeah. 00:43:17.63\00:43:18.96 It's a once for all thing, you accept the Christ 00:43:18.99\00:43:20.50 and you're safe forever." 00:43:20.53\00:43:23.16 The Apostle Paul clearly tells us 00:43:23.20\00:43:26.33 that salvation is a process. 00:43:26.37\00:43:30.71 It includes justification, it includes sanctification 00:43:30.74\00:43:34.34 and it includes glorification. 00:43:34.38\00:43:38.11 Notice this passage in Titus 3:4-7. 00:43:38.15\00:43:42.55 "For we ourselves were also..." 00:43:42.58\00:43:46.86 That's past, right? 00:43:46.89\00:43:48.32 "Foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various..." 00:43:48.36\00:43:54.60 What? 00:43:54.63\00:43:55.96 "Lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, 00:43:56.00\00:44:02.00 hateful and hating one another." 00:44:02.04\00:44:05.54 What we used to be before salvation. 00:44:05.57\00:44:09.18 But says the Apostle Paul, "When the kindness 00:44:09.21\00:44:13.28 and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared..." 00:44:13.31\00:44:17.55 Past tense, that's speaking about the grace 00:44:17.59\00:44:20.36 that comes through Jesus Christ. 00:44:20.39\00:44:24.39 Once again, but when the kindness 00:44:24.43\00:44:26.39 and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 00:44:26.43\00:44:29.43 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, 00:44:29.46\00:44:32.93 but according to his mercy he..." 00:44:32.97\00:44:35.40 What? 00:44:35.44\00:44:36.94 "He saved us, 00:44:36.97\00:44:41.18 through the washing of regeneration, 00:44:41.21\00:44:42.98 and the renewing of the Holy Spirit. 00:44:43.01\00:44:45.18 Whom he poured out..." 00:44:45.21\00:44:46.58 Once again past, "On us abundantly 00:44:46.61\00:44:49.42 through Jesus Christ our Savior. 00:44:49.45\00:44:52.02 That having being justified by his..." 00:44:52.05\00:44:56.89 What? 00:44:56.93\00:44:58.26 "By his grace, we should become heirs of the..." 00:44:58.29\00:45:01.73 What? 00:45:01.76\00:45:03.10 "Of the hope of eternal life." So you see past and future. 00:45:03.13\00:45:09.24 The future is guaranteed by what occurred in the past. 00:45:09.27\00:45:16.18 Now let's go to Titus 2:14. 00:45:16.21\00:45:20.82 Here the Apostle Paul, 00:45:20.85\00:45:22.18 once again notice the tense of the verbs. 00:45:22.22\00:45:25.25 "Who gave himself for us." 00:45:25.29\00:45:28.49 That's when grace manifested itself 00:45:28.52\00:45:30.76 that he mentioned in verse 11. 00:45:30.79\00:45:32.29 "Who gave himself for us." 00:45:32.33\00:45:35.80 Why did he give himself for us? 00:45:35.83\00:45:37.40 Does grace teaches any thing? 00:45:37.43\00:45:39.83 This passage tells us that grace teaches us. 00:45:39.87\00:45:43.77 That there is a change in the life, 00:45:43.81\00:45:46.54 so the Apostle Paul says, 00:45:46.57\00:45:47.91 "Who gave himself for us, that..." 00:45:47.94\00:45:51.68 In Greek it's Hina, which means so that. 00:45:51.71\00:45:56.28 He did this so that this would happen. 00:45:56.32\00:46:00.36 "Who gave Himself for us, so that He might redeem us..." 00:46:00.39\00:46:06.33 That word redeem means to buy back by paying a price, 00:46:06.36\00:46:10.33 is referring to His death on the cross. 00:46:10.37\00:46:12.40 "That He might redeem us from every lawless deed." 00:46:12.43\00:46:16.64 That word lawless is the same word that is used 00:46:16.67\00:46:19.57 and translated, transgression of the law. 00:46:19.61\00:46:21.78 Jesus redeemed us 00:46:21.81\00:46:23.14 from our transgressions of the law, 00:46:23.18\00:46:25.28 but not only did Jesus redeem us 00:46:25.31\00:46:28.72 from our transgressions of the law, 00:46:28.75\00:46:30.75 He goes beyond this. 00:46:30.79\00:46:32.89 Notice how the Apostle Paul finishes this verse. 00:46:32.92\00:46:36.59 "Who gave Himself for us, 00:46:36.62\00:46:38.69 that He might redeem us from every lawless deed, 00:46:38.73\00:46:42.63 that is from our transgressions of the law..." 00:46:42.66\00:46:44.83 But now notice this and what? 00:46:44.87\00:46:47.77 "And purify for Himself, His own special people..." 00:46:47.80\00:46:53.34 What? "Zealous for good works." 00:46:53.38\00:46:59.38 Does grace teach us anything? 00:46:59.41\00:47:02.22 Grace teaches us that we should renounce 00:47:02.25\00:47:04.32 on godliness and fleshly lust 00:47:04.35\00:47:05.99 and we should live soberly and we should live righteously. 00:47:06.02\00:47:10.43 Jesus appeared to save us, so that He might redeem us 00:47:10.46\00:47:13.90 from yes, our transgressions of the law by justifying us, 00:47:13.93\00:47:17.43 but also to purify for Himself, His own special people 00:47:17.47\00:47:22.34 and He wants His people to be zealous of good works. 00:47:22.37\00:47:25.37 By the way that word zealous is very interesting. 00:47:25.41\00:47:27.88 It's the Greek word zelotes. 00:47:27.91\00:47:31.11 There was a Jewish sect in the times of Christ 00:47:31.15\00:47:34.65 that was known as the zelotes. 00:47:34.68\00:47:37.25 You know they used all of their power 00:47:37.29\00:47:40.32 to try and overthrow the Roman government. 00:47:40.36\00:47:42.36 They were zealous in their cause. 00:47:42.39\00:47:46.09 Of course, their cause was wrong. 00:47:46.13\00:47:48.60 The Bible tells us that the Apostle Paul was zealous 00:47:48.63\00:47:51.37 in persecuting the Christians, his cause was wrong 00:47:51.40\00:47:53.94 but should we be any zealous for the things of God? 00:47:53.97\00:47:57.87 The Apostle Paul doesn't say just do good works, 00:47:57.91\00:48:00.31 he says that as a result of what Christ has done, 00:48:00.34\00:48:03.18 we should be zealous of good works. 00:48:03.21\00:48:08.38 So in this verse we have the past, 00:48:08.42\00:48:10.49 Jesus appeared, His grace saved us. 00:48:10.52\00:48:16.22 By His grace He's teaching us 00:48:16.26\00:48:19.36 that we should deny ungodliness 00:48:19.39\00:48:24.00 and worldly lusts. 00:48:24.03\00:48:26.87 And we should be living soberly 00:48:26.90\00:48:28.54 and righteously in this present age, 00:48:28.57\00:48:30.37 and the reason why is because we're looking forward 00:48:30.41\00:48:33.54 to the glorious coming of Jesus Christ 00:48:33.58\00:48:35.94 on the clouds of heaven. 00:48:35.98\00:48:39.31 Let's notice Romans 6:22, 00:48:39.35\00:48:41.45 where we have the same theme of the Apostle Paul, 00:48:41.48\00:48:44.12 past, present and future. 00:48:44.15\00:48:48.42 Romans 6:22, 00:48:48.46\00:48:52.19 the Apostle Paul tells us, 00:48:52.23\00:48:55.76 "But now having been set free from sin..." 00:48:55.80\00:48:59.90 Past tense, "And having become slaves of God, 00:48:59.93\00:49:06.88 you have as your fruit..." 00:49:06.91\00:49:08.64 What? 00:49:08.68\00:49:10.78 Holiness, are you seeing the connection? 00:49:10.81\00:49:15.45 The Apostle Paul says we've been set free from sin, 00:49:15.48\00:49:18.62 Jesus down on the cross for our sins. 00:49:18.65\00:49:21.79 We have become slaves of God. 00:49:21.82\00:49:23.32 In other words, we become servants of God 00:49:23.36\00:49:25.93 and what is the fruit? 00:49:25.96\00:49:27.66 The fruit is holiness but that's not all. 00:49:27.70\00:49:32.63 The verse continue saying, 00:49:32.67\00:49:34.20 "And the end, everlasting life." 00:49:34.24\00:49:39.44 Once again, the same theme. 00:49:39.47\00:49:43.35 Notice Ephesians 5:25-27. 00:49:43.38\00:49:46.98 Ephesians 5:25-27, 00:49:47.02\00:49:49.72 once again the Apostle Paul 00:49:49.75\00:49:51.42 speaks about what happened in the past 00:49:51.45\00:49:53.46 and it should color the presence at present 00:49:53.49\00:49:55.82 and it should also make us look forward to the future. 00:49:55.86\00:49:59.56 Ephesians 5:25-27. 00:49:59.59\00:50:01.96 "Husbands, love your wives, 00:50:02.00\00:50:04.50 just as Christ also loved the church 00:50:04.53\00:50:06.43 and gave Himself for her." 00:50:06.47\00:50:08.40 See that's what Jesus did in the past. 00:50:08.44\00:50:10.41 Jesus gave Himself by living and dying for His church. 00:50:10.44\00:50:15.68 But there is an intention or a purpose for that. 00:50:15.71\00:50:18.78 Once again, "Husbands, love your wives, 00:50:18.81\00:50:20.75 just as Christ also loved the church 00:50:20.78\00:50:22.68 and gave Himself for her that He might..." 00:50:22.72\00:50:27.56 He did that, so that he could this." 00:50:27.59\00:50:30.86 Do what? "That He might." 00:50:30.89\00:50:33.93 What? 00:50:33.96\00:50:35.50 "Sanctify..." 00:50:35.53\00:50:36.90 That means to make holy. 00:50:36.93\00:50:39.20 "And cleanse her with the washing of water 00:50:39.23\00:50:42.97 by the word that He might present..." 00:50:43.00\00:50:45.87 Here comes the future tense. 00:50:45.91\00:50:47.24 "That He might present her to Himself a glorious church, 00:50:47.28\00:50:52.08 not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, 00:50:52.11\00:50:55.78 but that she should be holy and without blemish." 00:50:55.82\00:51:00.62 That he might present the church to himself, 00:51:00.66\00:51:03.16 a pure, clean church to himself. 00:51:03.19\00:51:07.13 You say, "Well, Pastor Bohr, how is this possible? 00:51:10.37\00:51:14.44 The secret is not really that difficult to understand. 00:51:18.94\00:51:24.68 You know, the way in which we overcome sin 00:51:24.71\00:51:30.95 and our lives are cleansed 00:51:30.99\00:51:33.82 is not by looking at the law 00:51:33.86\00:51:39.26 but by looking at Christ. 00:51:39.29\00:51:41.70 You see what happens when we look at Christ 00:51:41.73\00:51:44.10 because we're always supposed to look at the grace of God, 00:51:44.13\00:51:46.97 that's the grace of God in Christ 00:51:47.00\00:51:49.34 is the incentive for the denying 00:51:49.37\00:51:51.87 and for the living 00:51:51.91\00:51:53.24 and for being zealous of good works 00:51:53.27\00:51:55.11 in view of the coming of Christ. 00:51:55.14\00:51:57.61 The past is the root 00:51:57.65\00:52:00.08 and so we must have our eyes on Jesus 00:52:00.12\00:52:03.75 and when I look at Jesus, you know what I see? 00:52:03.79\00:52:07.19 I see one who is absolutely perfect. 00:52:07.22\00:52:11.69 And when I look at the perfection of Jesus, 00:52:11.73\00:52:13.93 what do I see about myself? 00:52:13.96\00:52:17.37 The same thing that Isaiah said, 00:52:17.40\00:52:19.07 "I am undone" or what the Apostle Paul said, 00:52:19.10\00:52:25.54 "Miserable man that I am." 00:52:25.57\00:52:29.71 Or as Peter said," Depart from me, 00:52:29.74\00:52:31.85 for I am a sinful man." 00:52:31.88\00:52:33.21 You see the holiness of Jesus rebukes our sin. 00:52:33.25\00:52:39.95 Now that would be kind of desperate 00:52:39.99\00:52:41.36 if it's just rebuked our sin. 00:52:41.39\00:52:44.86 It'd be depressing. 00:52:44.89\00:52:47.96 But then I look at Jesus on the cross 00:52:48.00\00:52:52.20 and I see this being that was absolutely pure 00:52:52.23\00:52:55.54 and clean and perfect, 00:52:55.57\00:53:00.04 going to Gethsemane. 00:53:00.08\00:53:03.68 Having his life crushed by the lord of sin 00:53:03.71\00:53:08.18 and then on the cross cried out, 00:53:08.22\00:53:09.75 "My God, My God, why have You forsaken me? 00:53:09.78\00:53:14.36 And so I look at Jesus and say, "Lord you're so perfect, 00:53:14.39\00:53:17.26 you're so beautiful. 00:53:17.29\00:53:19.06 You never sin and yet look what happened to you. 00:53:19.09\00:53:21.60 Why did that happen to you? 00:53:21.63\00:53:25.20 And Jesus says, "Because of your sins." 00:53:25.23\00:53:29.37 And folks when I see what sin did to Jesus, 00:53:29.40\00:53:32.61 I will not want anything more to do with sin. 00:53:32.64\00:53:35.68 Amen. 00:53:35.71\00:53:38.31 Sin is not overcome by looking at the law, 00:53:38.35\00:53:40.52 it's overcome by looking at Jesus. 00:53:40.55\00:53:43.92 By beholding Jesus we're changed. 00:53:43.95\00:53:46.65 The problem is, that we are looking at the wrong things. 00:53:46.69\00:53:51.79 We're listening to the wrong things. 00:53:51.83\00:53:53.83 We're looking and listening at things 00:53:53.86\00:53:56.23 that make our sin stronger, rather than rebuking our sin. 00:53:56.26\00:54:01.57 Amen. 00:54:01.60\00:54:03.77 When Jesus comes, He will have a pure people. 00:54:03.81\00:54:06.78 I believe, folks, that once probation closes, 00:54:06.81\00:54:10.71 the characters of God's people will be settled for eternity. 00:54:10.75\00:54:14.38 Amen. 00:54:14.42\00:54:16.99 I believe that God's people 00:54:17.02\00:54:18.35 will have to live without an intercessor 00:54:18.39\00:54:20.09 because Jesus will have laid off His priestly robes. 00:54:20.12\00:54:23.12 Amen. 00:54:23.16\00:54:25.19 Victory over sin must be won, 00:54:25.23\00:54:28.93 but it's not won by looking at the law and looking, 00:54:28.96\00:54:32.63 "Oh, well, how am I doing today? 00:54:32.67\00:54:35.24 No, it's won by looking at Jesus in Gethsemane 00:54:35.27\00:54:39.74 and on the cross, 00:54:39.77\00:54:41.11 and looking at His perfect life. 00:54:41.14\00:54:44.38 That's why Ellen White said, 00:54:44.41\00:54:45.75 we need to spend a thoughtful hour each day, 00:54:45.78\00:54:49.02 contemplating the life of Christ. 00:54:49.05\00:54:52.45 She says that as we look at the loveliness 00:54:52.49\00:54:54.59 of the character of Jesus, we are changed, 00:54:54.62\00:54:57.39 we're transformed and the word that is used in Greek 00:54:57.43\00:55:00.46 is the word metamorphosis. 00:55:00.50\00:55:03.33 You know what a metamorphosis is? 00:55:03.37\00:55:06.77 Butterflies go through metamorphosis. 00:55:06.80\00:55:11.07 You know what butterfly used to be? 00:55:11.11\00:55:13.81 Worms. 00:55:13.84\00:55:17.68 And then they are buried in the cocoon, 00:55:17.71\00:55:19.11 like we are buried in the waters of baptism. 00:55:19.15\00:55:21.32 And lo and behold, when the creature comes out, 00:55:21.35\00:55:27.06 it's been totally and radically changed. 00:55:27.09\00:55:30.53 It's no longer a caterpillar that drags itself along, no, 00:55:30.56\00:55:37.20 it's a beautiful butterfly that flies through he air, 00:55:37.23\00:55:39.90 it's been radically changed. 00:55:39.93\00:55:42.57 The word that is used in 2 Corinthians 3 00:55:42.60\00:55:45.34 is that by beholding, by continually beholding 00:55:45.37\00:55:49.34 we are changed 00:55:49.38\00:55:50.91 into the image of Christ. 00:55:50.95\00:55:56.45 That's what we should be doing in the present, 00:55:56.48\00:55:58.09 in the light of what Jesus did in the past 00:55:58.12\00:56:00.86 and looking to the glorious future, 00:56:00.89\00:56:03.99 the glorious coming of Jesus Christ. 00:56:04.03\00:56:07.33 I want to throw out a challenge 00:56:07.36\00:56:08.70 as I bring this to a close this afternoon. 00:56:08.73\00:56:13.10 The conflict series, 00:56:13.13\00:56:15.67 the five books that Ellen White wrote 00:56:15.70\00:56:19.11 which are known as the conflict series 00:56:19.14\00:56:22.48 have 3,603 pages. 00:56:22.51\00:56:27.68 It's the greatest Bible commentary 00:56:27.72\00:56:29.78 that has ever been written. 00:56:29.82\00:56:32.02 Amen.
